The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with rhamnolipids (RLs) on the growth performance, slaughter performance, apparent digestibility and fat metabolism of broilers. Broiler chicks were randomly divided into 3 groups: control (C) group, 100 mg/kg (L) and 1,000 mg/kg (H) RL supplementation groups. The results, after dietary supplementation with RLs for 42 days, revealed a RL dose-dependent promoting effect on feed intake, and an increase of the evisceration index of 42-day-old broilers, but a decrease in the rate of abdominal fat gain. The dietary supplementation with RLs significantly increased the digestibility of protein and fat in broilers. The serum total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels of the H group were significantly higher than those of the C group (p < 0.01), whereas total triglyceride was lower. The liver triglyceride and total cholesterol levels of the H group were significantly higher than those of the L and C groups (p < 0.05). In summary, dietary supplementation with RLs can improve growth performance and carcase quality of broilers by strengthening the emulsification effect of lipid nutrients in the diet of poultry. Continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique. cTBS modulation is an effective treatment for motor dysfunction rehabilitation in post-stroke patients. However, there's currently a lack of research on the effects of cTBS stimulation on the contralesional hemisphere. To better understand the role of cTBS in motor rehabilitation, we investigated the neuroregulatory mechanisms of cTBS in the contralateral cortex using transcranial magnetic stimulation-evoked electroencephalography (TMS-EEG). In this randomized, sham-controlled, single-blind study, 18 healthy subjects received two separate stimulation conditions: cTBS or sham stimulation applied to the left primary motor cortex (M1). TMS-EEG measurements were taken before and immediately after stimulation. We investigated the TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs), evoked oscillatory responses (EOR), and phase synchronization index (PSI) of TMS-EEG. The effects of cTBS were analyzed using two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (RMANOVA). There was a significant "cTBS condition × time" interaction effect on the theta and gamma bands of EOR, and on interhemisphere PSI (inter-PSI) and global PSI in both cTBS stimulation conditions. (theta: F = 4.526, P = 0.041; gamma: F = 5.574, P = 0.024; inter-PSI: F = 5.028, P = 0.032; global PSI: F = 5.129, P = 0.030). After real cTBS modulation, the energy in the theta and gamma frequency bands was significantly higher than before (theta: F = 5.747, P = 0.022; gamma: F = 5.545, P = 0.024). The inter-PSI and global PSI significantly increased after real cTBS modulation (inter-PSI: F = 6.209, P = 0.018; global PSI: F = 6.530, P = 0.015). cTBS modulation significantly increased EOR and PSI in contralateral brain regions, thereby enhancing cortical excitability and cortical functional connectivity throughout the brain. Background: Natural infection or vaccination have provided robust immune defense against SARS-CoV-2 invasion, nevertheless, Omicron variants still successfully cause breakthrough infection, and the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Methods: Sequential blood samples were continuously collected at different time points from 252 volunteers who were received the CanSino Ad5-nCoV (n = 183) vaccine or the Sinovac CoronaVac inactivated vaccine (n= 69). The anti- SARS-CoV-2 prototype and Omicron BA.5.2 as well as XBB.1.16 variant neutralizing antibodies (Nab) in sera were detected by ELISA. Sera were also used to measure pseudo and live virus neutralization assay. The associations between the anti-prototype Nab levels and different HLA-ABC alleles were analyzed using artificial intelligence (AI)-deep learning techniques. The frequency of B cells in PBMCs was investigated by flow cytometry assay (FACs). Results: Individuals carrying the HLA-B*15 allele manifested the highest concentrations of anti-SARS-CoV-2 prototype Nab after vax administration. Unfortunately, these volunteers are more susceptible to Omicron BA.5.2 breakthrough infection due to their sera have poorer anti-BA.5.2 Nab and lower levels of viral neutralization efficacy. FACs confirmed that a significant decrease in CD19+CD27+RBD+ memory B cells in these HLA-B*15 population compared to other cohorts. Importantly, generating lower concentrations of cross-reactive anti-XBB.1.16 Nab post-BA.5.2 infection caused HLA-B*15 individuals to be further infected by XBB.1.16 variant. Conclusions: Individuals carrying the HLA-B*15 allele respond better to COVID-19 vax including the CanSino Ad5-nCoV and the Sinovac CoronaVac inactivated vaccines, but are more susceptible to Omicron variant infection, thus, a novel vaccine against this population is necessary for COVID-19 pandemic control in the future. Purpose: In Europe, most medicines are taken orally and primarily packaged as single solid oral dosage forms (SODF) in blister chambers (alveoli) arranged on blister cards. Blister cards are constructed as multilayer laminates of aluminum (Al) foils and/or various plastic polymers bonded together, forming the alveoli, which are separated by more or less large gaps. We calculated the amount of packaging material (and thus waste) generated annually for the packaging of the most commonly prescribed SODF in Germany and estimated how much waste could be saved by rearranging the alveoli. Methods: For this purpose, we analysed the SODF of the 50 most frequently prescribed medicines that were packaged in alveoli (N = 45; 13 of aluminum-aluminum blisters, 32 of mixed materials), measured and weighed their packaging material and content, calculated the annual amount of waste produced from them, and estimated how much waste could be saved if the alveoli were optimally positioned on the blister cards. In addition, we examined the variability of the blister packaging of eight groups of commonly prescribed generics of the same strength. Results: Detailed analysis of the blister cards revealed that most of the material (69%) was used for the space between blisters and that aluminum-aluminum alveoli were more than four times larger than the packaged SODF. The (conservatively) estimated annual amount of composite waste generated for the primary packaging of these SODF was 3868 t (and extrapolated to the entire German pharmaceutical market 8533 t), of which an optimized arrangement of the blister chambers, i.e., a 2-mm sealing area around each alveolus and the arrangement of the SODF in 2 rows, would save approximately 37%. Conclusion: Considering that other ecological strategies are not yet mature, the optimal arrangement of blister chambers would be a captivatingly simple and, above all, immediately implementable strategy to avoid large amounts of avoidable waste. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of soybean lecithin in broiler diets formulated with either fried or non-fried soybean oils (as an energy source), on growth performance, digestibility, and some serum parameters. A total of 600 broilers (50% male) were assigned to 4 experimental groups (with 10 replicates of 15 birds each): (i) group (S) fed with soybean oil only, (ii) group (SL) fed with soybean oil + lecithin (0.035% in feed), (iii) group (F) fed with fried soybean oil only, and iv) group (FL) fed with fried soybean oil + lecithin (0.035% in feed). Broilers that received lecithin with fried soybean oil (group FL) exhibited significantly higher body weights (1.228 vs. 1.210 kg, p < 0.05 and 1.935 vs. 1.917 kg, p < 0.05) than group F in the last two experimental periods (22–28 and 29–35 days), respectively. On the contrary, the addition of soybean lecithin to diets formulated with either fried or non-fried soybean oil resulted in a significant increase in weight of some carcase cuts (thigh, breast) and a significant decrease in some visceral organs (intestine, liver, viscera), without affecting the digestibility parameters here assessed. Our findings revealed that the addition of soybean lecithin to standard soybean oil (group SL) significantly decreased serum triglycerides (77.16 vs. 83.46 mg/dL, p < 0.05) compared to group S. In conclusion, it was possible to use recovered frying soybean oil in broiler diets without a negative impact on growth performance and serum triglyceride level, while these parameters were improved by the addition of soybean lecithin. By-products obtained from oil/food processing represent an affordable and sustainable alternative to traditional fat sources for broiler feeding. Fried soybean oil used in broiler feed had the same effects on growth performance and nutrient digestibility as the non-fried oil. Female athletes follow a strict diet and perform rigorous exercise to boost their performance, which induces health issues called the female athlete triad (FAT), defined as the combination of disordered eating, amenorrhoea and low bone mineral density. It is known to have a significant effect on bones. However, its effects on the small intestine, which is responsible for nutrient uptake into the body, remain unclear. In this study, we created an animal model of FAT to examine its effects on digestive and absorptive molecules in the small intestine. Thirty 5-week-old female Sprague-Dawley (sd) rats with an initial body weight of about 147 g were divided into control (Con, n = 7), exercise (Ex, n = 7), food restriction (FR, n = 8) and exercise plus food restriction (FAT, n = 8) groups. The rats were subjected to 4 weeks of wheel running (Ex, FAT) and 50–40 % food restriction (FR, FAT) to examine the effects on bone and typical digestive enzymes and transporters in the jejunum. Two-way ANOVA and the Kruskal–Wallis test were used for statistical analysis of normal and non-normal data, respectively. Four weeks of exercise and food restriction decreased bone weight (vs. other group P < 0·01) and bone breaking power (vs. other group P < 0·01). Villus height decreased in the jejunum (vs. other group P < 0·01), but the expression of typical macronutrients digestive enzyme and absorptive molecules remained unchanged. In contrast, sucrase-isomaltase gene (v. Ex P = 0·02) and protein expression were increased (vs. other group P < 0·05). Introduction: Changes in the pattern of animal protein consumption and a greater tendency to consume chicken in the last decade has greatly increased the demand for this product. Considering that 70% of the cost of poultry production is related to nutrition, so, it can be concluded that optimal nutrition is the most important way to reduce production costs in this industry (Abdollahi et al. 2013). Advances in broiler nutrition and breeding have increased growth rate and reduced breeding period over the past few decades. At present, broilers reach slaughter weight at the age of 42 days. Unfortunately, this high growth rate leads to problems such as metabolic disorders (sudden death Syndrome, skeletal disorders and ascites), increased mortality, and abdominal, and carcass fat (Khajali et al. 2007). Slowing down the growth rate by using dietary restrictions will greatly prevent these problems. At the same time, low growth is not economical and it is necessary to compensate for the backward growth of chickens due to food restrictions. Researchers have stated that the main goal of research on dietary restriction in broilers is to improve feed efficiency and reduce carcass and abdominal fat (Zhan et al. 2007). Depriving birds, especially broilers, of rapid growth from full access to the nutrients needed for normal growth is called feed restriction, which is classified into two categories: quantitative and qualitative. The response to feed restriction depends on the duration of the feed restriction (Khetani et al. 2009). In quantitative or physical feed restrictions, the consumption of birds or animals is limited. The practical application of physical feed restriction is not easy due to the problems of regular weighing of poultry and calculating daily feed intake (Zulkifli et al. 2000). Quality restriction is another method of applying feed restriction that aims to use diets with low energy and protein levels (Fanooci and Torki 2010). Urdaneta-Rincon and Lesson (2002) y applying 85, 90 and 95% quantitative feed restriction in male broilers at 5 to 42 days of age, they showed that the application of dietary restriction led to a significant difference in weight at 42 days of age and also a significant reduction in mortality. Bautzen et al (2003) in an experiment on broiler sex mixture and the application of quantitative feed restrictions at the ages of 6 to 16 days and 80% of the previous day's consumption of the control treatment, showed that performance was affected in the early weeks, but the restricted treatments at the age of 42 One day, they achieved the desired compensatory growth and no difference with the control group. Therefore, according to the reports on the use of feed restriction in reducing metabolic diseases and losses, it seems necessary to study feed restriction in broilers. Material and methods: In order to evaluate the effects of quantitative feed restriction, 300 one-day-old Ross broilers were each in a completely randomized design with five treatments, five replications and 12 pieces per replication for 42 days. The birds were fed ad-libitum up to 10 days then they were restricted from 11 to 35 days and they were fed ad-libitum up from 36 to 42 of age. Experimental treatments include: (1) Corn- soybean meal – based diet as a control group (no feed restrictions), (2) feed access to 95% control group, (3) feed access to 90% control group, (4) feed access to 85% control group (5) feed access to 80% control group. Diets were prepared according to the maintenance guidelines of Ross 308 strain. At 42 days of age, one chick from each pen was randomly selected and slaughtered, and the carcass traits such as breast, thigh, gizzard, liver, abdominal fat and carcass yield were determined. On day 35 of the breeding period, one chick from each experimental unit was randomly selected and slaughtered. The cecum of the birds was isolated and examined for the microbial population of Lactobacillus, Coliform and E. coli in the laboratory. Blood samples were also collected and then, centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes and transferred to the laboratory to determine blood parameters (Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL and LDL). On day 35 of the experiment, some samples were collected and transferred to the laboratory to determine the percentage of dry matter, moisture, ash and volatile solids. To sample the waste, two hours before sampling, it was placed on the bed of each plastic pen and the waste were collected from five points of each pen. Experimental data were statistically analyzed in a completely randomized design using GLM procedure by software (SAS 2004) and the means were compared by Duncan's multiple range test at 5% probability level. Results and discussion: The results showed that feed restriction decreased feed intake and body weight gain comparted with the control group (P<0.05). Carcass characteristics, FCR and feces characteristics were not affected by Feed restriction (P>0.05). Also, feed restriction at the levels of 85% and 80% significantly decreased protein excretion in comparison with the control group (P<0.05). Feed restriction at the level of 80%, increased cecal populations of Lactobacillus spp. While decreased cecal populations of E. coli (P<0.05). Feed restriction decreased blood triglyceride and increased blood LDL (P<0.05). Quantitative feed restriction clearly affected body weight gain and feed intake of birds. The degree of change in these parameters depended on the level of feed restriction used. There was a reduction in body weight gain at 42 d for chicks restricted to 95, 90, and 85%, of ad libitum feed intake, relative to the previous day’s intake of the control birds. Such a reduction in body weight is in accordance with results from Khantaprab et al. (1997), Roth et al. (1993), and Santoso et al. (1993a). Results suggest that the growth rate of broiler chickens is related to feed intake, which supports the statement that improvement in body weight of birds is highly correlated to feed consumption (O’Sullivan et al, 1992). Conclusion: Overall the results showed that although feed restriction up to 80%, decreased feed intake and body weight gain of broiler chickens at the total period of experiment, but this restriction improved microbial population of cecum, decreased blood LDL and protein excretion. Quinoa is an Andean crop whose cultivation has been extended to many different parts of the world in the last decade. It shows a great capacity for adaptation to diverse climate conditions, including environmental stressors, and, moreover, the seeds are very nutritious in part due to their high protein content, which is rich in essential amino acids. They are gluten-free seeds and contain good amounts of other nutrients such as unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, or minerals. Also, the use of quinoa hydrolysates and peptides has been linked to numerous health benefits. Altogether, these aspects have situated quinoa as a crop able to contribute to food security worldwide. Aiming to deepen our understanding of the protein quality and function of quinoa seeds and how they can vary when this crop is subjected to water-limiting conditions, a shotgun proteomics analysis was performed to obtain the proteomes of quinoa seeds harvested from two different water regimes in the field: rainfed and irrigated conditions. Differentially increased levels of proteins determined in seeds from each field condition were analysed, and the enrichment of chitinase-related proteins in seeds harvested from rainfed conditions was found. These proteins are described as pathogen-related proteins and can be accumulated under abiotic stress. Thus, our findings suggest that chitinase-like proteins in quinoa seeds can be potential biomarkers of drought. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of feeding rice gluten meal (RGM) as an alternative protein source along with protease enzyme supplementation on growth performance, expression of nutrient transporter genes, nutrient digestibility, immune response and gut histomorphometry of broiler chicken. Proximate analysis of RGM revealed 923 g dry matter (DM), 500 g crude protein (CP), 69.2 g ether extract, 94.7 g crude fiber, 215.4 g nitrogen-free extract, 43.7 g ash, 6.20 g calcium, 7.80 g total phosphorus, 18.99 MJ gross energy and 12.68 MJ metabolizable energy per kg diet. Significant upregulation of nutrient transporter genes (PepT1, EAAT3 and mucin) and better growth performance was observed in the birds fed control diet which was statistically similar to the birds fed 150 g RGM compared to birds fed higher RGM levels. Histomorphometry of jejunum, nutrient digestibility, and immune response of birds did not reveal any significant effect of RGM or protease enzyme supplementation. However, the inclusion of RGM up to 150 g/kg diet resulted in significant decline of feed cost/kg live weight gain, dressed meat yield and eviscerated meat yield by 13.13%, 12.99% and 13.36%, respectively compared to control. Thus, it was concluded that the inclusion of 150 g RGM/kg diet in broiler chicken ration has no adverse effects on the growth pattern of birds and can be used for least-cost feed formulation for chicken. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome of sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate (SSL) supplementation to energy reduced diets on broilers' growth performance, apparent nutrient digestibility, excreta bacterial counts, and blood lipid profile. A total of 700 one-day-old male (feather sexed) Ross 308 broiler chickens having an average body weight of 43 ± 1.2 g were randomly allotted to five (5) dietary treatments (7 pens/treatment). The treatments consisted of: (1) positive control (PC) (basal diet with metabolisable energy, ME = 3000 kcal/kg starter; 3100 kcal/kg grower; 3200 kcal/kg finisher), (2) negative control (NC) (PC − 50 kcal/kg), (3) SSL1, NC + 0.03% SSL, (4) SSL2, NC + 0.04% SSL, (5) SSL3, NC + 0.05% SSL. The PC group showed higher BWG (body weight gain) and lower FCR (feed conversion ration) than the NC group during days 1 to 7, and 7 to 21. SSL supplemented groups showed higher BWG and better FCR than the NC group, along with a linear increase in BWG and linear decrease in FCR during days 1 to 7 and 7 to 21. Furthermore, a linear increase in overall BWG was observed with SSL doses. Excreta microbial counts were not influenced by energy levels or SSL doses. In blood serum parameters, LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol was reduced with a linear tendency by increasing levels of SSL supplementation. In conclusion, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate supplementation showed better growth and nutrient digestibility in broilers' at an early age. Understanding the linkages within complex and evolving marine food webs is essential to comprehend marine ecosystem structure and dynamics. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope signatures are recognized to be powerful descriptors of the trophic ecology and trophic relationships within marine communities. Apex predators such as seabirds can influence the structure of communities by predating in lower trophic levels. They also convey information both over a range of spatial and temporal scales due to their high mobility and longevity, respectively. For this reason, here, we studied the trophic ecology of northern gannets and the extent of niche overlap with other apex predators within the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic), a key feeding area for numerous predatory species. Mixing models indicated that northern gannets fed primarily on European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and on a mixed group composed of European sardine Sardina pilchardus, European sprat Sprattus sprattus, juvenile hake Merluccius merluccius, Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus and Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus. Within the apex predator community, the northern gannets trophic niche overlapped the most with common guillemots Uria aalge (15.58%, based on Stable Isotope Bayesian Ellipses (SIBER)) and overlapped to a lesser extent with cetacean species occupying shelf habitats (i.e., the harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena (9.99%) and the short-beaked common dolphin Delphinus delphis (10.37%)). Overall, the overlap found was moderate indicating trophic similarities and dissimilarities between these species. Information on trophic interactions between co-existing species is necessary for holistic environmental management, particularly in areas where several megafauna species share their foraging grounds with fisheries activity. The elderly are one of the most vulnerable groups to heat-related illnesses and mortality. In tropical countries like India, where heat waves have increased in frequency and severity, few studies have focused on the level of stress experienced by the elderly. The study presented here included 130 elderly residents of Kolkata slums and 180 elderly residents of rural villages about 75 km south of Kolkata. It used miniature monitoring devices to continuously measure temperature, humidity, and heat index experienced during everyday activities over 24-h study periods, during hot summer months. In the Kolkata slum, construction materials and the urban heat island effect combined to create hotter indoor than outdoor conditions throughout the day, and particularly at night. As a result, elderly slum residents were 4.3 times more likely to experience dangerous heat index levels (≥ 45°C) compared to rural village elderly. In both locations, the median 24-h heat indexes of active elderly were up to 2°C higher than inactive/sedentary elderly (F = 25.479, p < 0.001). Among Kolkata slums residents, there were no significant gender differences in heat exposure during the day or night, but in the rural village, elderly women were 4 times more likely to experience dangerous heat index levels during the hottest times of the day compared to elderly men. Given the decline in thermoregulatory capacity associated with aging and the increasing severity of extreme summer heat in India, these results forecast a growing public health challenge that will require both scientific and government attention. Cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (c-tDCS) enhances motor skill acquisition and motor learning in young and old adults. Since the cerebellum is involved in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD), c-tDCS may represent an intervention with potential to improve motor learning in PD. The primary purpose was to determine the influence of long-term application of c-tDCS on motor learning in PD. The secondary purpose was to examine the influence of long-term application of c-tDCS on transfer of motor learning in PD. The study was a randomized, double-blind, SHAM-controlled, between-subjects design. Twenty-one participants with PD were allocated to either a tDCS group or a SHAM stimulation group. Participants completed 9 practice sessions over a 2-week period that involved extensive practice of an isometric pinch grip task (PGT) and a rapid arm movement task (AMT). These practice tasks were performed over a 25-min period concurrent with either anodal c-tDCS or SHAM stimulation. A set of transfer tasks that included clinical rating scales, manual dexterity tests, and lower extremity assessments were quantified in Test sessions at Baseline, 1, 14, and 28 days after the end of practice (EOP). There were no significant differences between the c-tDCS and SHAM groups as indicated by performance changes in the practice and transfer tasks from Baseline to the 3 EOP Tests. Conservation of migratory birds requires knowledge of breeding and nonbreeding ranges and the connections between them. European turtle doves (Streptopelia turtur) are Palearctic-African long-distance migrants with wintering areas in the Sub-Saharan belt that are classed as vulnerable due to strong population declines. However, detailed non-breeding locations of individuals from different migratory flyways are unknown. To identify wintering regions of turtle doves, we measured stable isotopes of feathers grown on the wintering grounds and used a dual-isotope (hydrogen (δ2Hf) and carbon (δ13Cf)) probabilistic assignment to analyse origins of individuals migrating through the western and central/eastern flyways. The most probable wintering areas for turtle dove samples from both flyways were in the western and central Sub-Sahara. However, we found differences in δ2Hf and δ13Cf values between turtle doves following different migratory routes (western vs central/eastern flyway). This result suggests a higher likelihood of origins in the central Sub-Sahara for central and eastern migrants, while turtle doves using the western flyway originated primarily in the western Sub-Sahara, highlighting the importance of both regions for the future conservation of turtle doves from European breeding populations. The establishment of migratory connectivity of populations requires sampling from birds from the European as well as Asian continent; however, we provide important results that can be used to test hypotheses regarding population declines resulting from factors experienced over the full annual cycle for some populations. Two fat sources, soybean oil (SO) and refined poultry oil (RPO), and 4 emulsifiers (control, lysolecithin, lysophospholipid, and bile acids) were used in this experiment. Thirteen hundred and sixty (1360) birds (ROSS - 308) were divided into 8 groups having 5 replicates, 34 birds in each. Energy efficiency, feed conversion (FCR), and protein efficiency ratios were improved in birds receiving SO than RPO diets. Weight gain, FCR, feed intake, and dressing percentage were increased in broiler birds receiving bile acid than those given lyso-phospholipid and lysolecithin (p < 0.05). Cooking loss was greater (p < 0.05) in broiler birds given RPO than those fed SO. Birds receiving bile acid had greater (p < 0.05) water holding capacity of chest meat than other fat emulsifiers. Bile acids in broiler diet presented higher (p < 0.05) digestibility of crude protein and ether extract as compared to other treatments. Bile acid supplemented diets had a minimum (p < 0.05) cost of production per kg live weight than other fat emulsifiers. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the replacement of degummed soybean oil (DSO) by acid soybean oil (ASO) in diets with or without the inclusion of emulsifier on broiler performance, relative organ weight, lipase activity, intestinal morphometry, and nutrient digestibility. Methods: A total of 704 1-day-old male broiler chicks were allotted to a 2×2 completely randomized factorial design (with or without emulsifier × two lipid sources [ASO and DSO]), with eight replicates and 22 birds each. The metabolizable energy level in diets with emulsifier was reduced by 40 kcal/kg from 1 to 21 d and 50 kcal/kg from 22 to 49 d. Results: Broilers fed diets containing ASO without emulsifier had higher (p = 0.005) weight gain than DSO-fed animals and with the inclusion of emulsifier had worse (p = 0.018) feed conversion ratio (FCR). Birds fed diets with emulsifier worsened FCR regardless of lipid source from 1 to 21 days (p = 0.006) and from 1 to 49 days (p = 0.0002). There was an increase (p = 0.026) in the relative pancreas weight, at 14 days, in birds fed diets containing ASO. Lipase activity and morphometry of the duodenum and jejunum, at 14 and 21 days, were not affected (p>0.05). The dietary inclusion of emulsifier improved the digestible energy (p = 0.053) in the presence of ASO. For the digestibility coefficients (gross energy, crude protein, and mineral matter), no interference was observed (p>0.05). Conclusion: The inclusion of emulsifier to energy-restricted diet with ASO maintained broiler performance in the first week, but worsened FCR in subsequent phases. The ASO can be considered as an alternative lipid source to DSO and does not interfere with the morphophysiological characteristics and performance of broilers. Background: To apply transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) to the motor cortex, motor hotspots are generally identified using motor evoked potentials by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The objective of this study is to validate the feasibility of a novel electroencephalography (EEG)-based motor-hotspot-identification approach using a machine learning technique as a potential alternative to TMS.Methods: EEG data were measured using 63 channels from thirty subjects as they performed a simple finger tapping task. Power spectral densities of the EEG data were extracted from six frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma, and full) and were independently used to train and test an artificial neural network for motor hotspot identification. The 3D coordinate information of individual motor hotspots identified by TMS were quantitatively compared with those estimated by our EEG-based motor-hotspot-identification approach to assess its feasibility.Results: The minimum mean error distance between the motor hotspot locations identified by TMS and our proposed motor-hotspot-identification approach was 0.22 ± 0.03 cm, demonstrating the proof-of-concept of our proposed EEG-based approach. A mean error distance of 1.32 ± 0.15 cm was measured when using only nine channels attached to the middle of the motor cortex, showing the possibility of practically using the proposed motor-hotspot-identification approach based on a relatively small number of EEG channels.Conclusion: We demonstrated the feasibility of our novel EEG-based motor-hotspot-identification method. It is expected that our approach can be used as an alternative to TMS for motor hotspot identification. Each of these notions must be analyzed based on local dynamics, between global and local processes. Through a decolonial approach, we seek to go beyond what urban theories point out when researching how the city is produced in everyday life. Territorial coloniality persists through the dimensions of being, power and knowledge. Four neighborhoods of Maputo were analyzed through the progressive-regressive method. Root-knot nematodes cause damage to several crops and the importance of each species can vary according with the crop and the agricultural region. In Brazil, Meloidogyne javanica is one of the most important nematode species parasitizing mulberry. To define management strategies, it is important to know if the crop species is damaged by the parasitism of the nematode and the best choices for control, as the use of nematicides. Biological nematicides have been extensively used in Brazil, but no information regarding its efficiency to control M. javanica in mulberry is available. Besides, it is not known if biological nematicides could improve the quality of leaves or if they alter the nutrient composition of leaves, which could interfere in the development of the silkworms that are feed with these leaves or in the quality of the silk produced. With the aim to address these questions, we propose a study that will start in the phenotyping of the main Brazilian mulberry cultivars to Meloidogyne species, passing through the test of efficiency of biological nematicides in the control of M. javanica in mulberry cultivar Miura, evaluation of the amount and quality of leaves produced and, using these leaves to feed silkworms, in the analyzes of the impact of these diet in the health of silkworms, and in the production and quality of the silk. Objective: This study assessed the effect of different levels of xylanase, β-glucanase and phytase on intestinal enzyme activities and tibia bone development in broiler chickens fed wheat-based diets. Methods: Twelve experimental diets were formulated using a 3×2×2 factorial design (three doses of phytase and two doses of both xylanase and β-glucanase) and offered to 648 dayold Ross 308 male chicks having 6 replicates groups with 9 birds per replicate and lasted for 35 days. Results: An interaction between the enzymes products improved (p<0.01) the activity of chymotrypsin. Protein content at d 10 was highest (p<0.001) with addition of phytase while general proteolytic activity (GPA) (p<0.02) and lipase activity (p<0.001) were decreased. At d 24, there were improvements in protein content (p<0.01) and lipase (p<0.04) with supplementation of superdose phytase. Addition of superdose phytase decreased in chymotrypsin (p<0.02), trypsin (p<0.01) and GPA (p<0.001). The optimum dose of xylanase decreased the chymotrypsin activity (p = 0.05), while the GPA (p<0.001) was increased with the optimum level of β-glucanase. Superdose phytase supplementation at d 10 improved maltase (p = 0.05), sucrase (p<0.001) and alkaline phosphatase (p<0.001) activities in the jejunum while aminopeptidase activity was highest (p<0.005) with the low level of phytase. Protein content of jejunum mucosa was bigger (p<0.001) in birds fed superdose phytase while maltase activity (p<0.001) at d 24 was reduced by this treatment. Sucrase (p<0.04) and aminopeptidase activities (p<0.001) improved when diets supplemented with low levels of phytase. Tibia bone breaking strength was highest (p<0.04) with addition of low level of superdose phytase or optimum level of β-glucanase. Bone dry matter content decreased (p<0.04) when diets supplemented with phytase. Conclusion: From the results obtained in this study, supplementation of superdose phytase was the most effective, however, the cost-benefit analysis of the use of such a dose needs to be evaluated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the productive performance and quality of eggs and bones of Japanese quails that received different dietary electrolyte balance (EB) and were submitted to thermoneutrality or heat stress conditions. Eight hundred Japanese quails of 21 days of age were selected and distributed randomly in two bioclimatic chambers: thermoneutral chamber (23 °C ± 2 °C) and heat-stress chamber (33 °C ± 2 °C). The treatments were in a 2 × 5 factorial arrangement, with two temperatures and five EB levels (165, 215, 265, 315, 365 mEq/kg) with four replicates of 20 birds each. The productive performance and egg quality (in 3 cycles of 21 days) were measured. At 105 days old, the bone quality was evaluated. Data were analyzed by Minitab, and the means were compared by Tukey’s test and regression test for levels (P < 0.05). Quails submitted to thermoneutrality showed better performance and egg and bone quality. The highest production rate was the EB level of 265 mEq/kg. Low values of EB (165 and 215 mEq/kg) and high values (365) impaired egg quality, and the ideal was 315 mEq/kg. Lower levels of balance provided poor bone density. In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that heat stress impairs the production and quality of quail eggs and bones. Furthermore, by using intermediate EB levels (265 and 315) mEq/kg, it is possible to improve egg production and egg quality, and using high levels increases bone mineral density. Background and purpose: Parkinson's disease (PD) reduces independence and quality of life through deterioration of upper limb motor function. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may offer an alternative, adjunctive therapy for PD. However, the efficacy of tDCS for upper limb motor rehabilitation in PD is unknown. In this systematic review, evidence is compiled regarding the effects of tDCS on upper limb motor function in PD. Methods: Studies of tDCS applied to PD patients that assessed upper limb motor function, conducted between January 2000 and November 2018, were screened for inclusion via a systematic search of Medline, Cochrane, PsycINFO, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Web of Science. Results: Ten out of 606 studies were included and their findings synthesized into five categories regarding the effects of tDCS on: (1) Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor section (UPDRS III), (2) upper limb motor tasks, (3) manual dexterity, (4) reaction time, and (5) neurophysiology. Conclusions: When applied to the primary motor cortex, tDCS may improve UPDRS III and the speed and force of movement. Considerable variation was found in tDCS parameters and further study is needed to clarify the long-term effects of tDCS on both simple and complex motor tasks and to compile relevant neurophysiological evidence. Objective: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common neurological diseases in the world. Due to structural and functional changes in central nerves system, the patients with MS may affected by sensory-motor learning deficits. The aims of the current study was to assess the effect of primary motor cortex (M1) anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) on online and offline motor learning in patients with MS. Materials and methods : Thirty-nine patients with MS were randomly assigned in three groups: concurrent M1 a-tDCS and serial response time test (SRTT) (n=13), concurrent sham a-tDCS and SRTT (n=13) and SRTT-only control (n=13). The participants in all groups were asked to concurrently perform 20 minutes of SRTT. M1 a-tDCS group received 20-minute M1 a-tDCS (2 mA) concurrent with SRTT, while the a-tDCS was turned off after 30 seconds in the sham a-tDCS group. Response time (RT) and error rate (ER) during SRTT were assessed prior, during and 48 hours after the intervention. Results: Online learning happened in all groups (P < 0.05), with more significant learning in M1 a-tDCS group as compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). However, offline learning was occurred only in M1 a-tDCS group (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The findings indicate offline motor learning impairment in patients with MS. Walking onto a stationary platform that had been previously experienced as moving generates a locomotor after-effect-the so-called 'broken escalator' phenomenon. The motor responses that occur during locomotor after-effects have been mapped theoretically using a hierarchal Bayesian model of brain function that takes into account current sensory information that is weighted according to prior contextually-relevant experiences; these in turn inform automatic motor responses. Here, we use the broken escalator phenomenon to explore motor learning in patients with functional gait disorders and probe whether abnormal postural mechanisms override ascending sensory information and conscious intention, leading to maladaptive and disabling gait abnormalities. Fourteen patients with functional gait disorders and 17 healthy control subjects walked onto a stationary sled ('Before' condition, five trials), then onto a moving sled ('Moving' condition, 10 trials) and then again onto the stationary sled ('After' condition, five trials). Subjects were warned of the change in conditions. Kinematic gait measures (trunk displacement, step timing, gait velocity), EMG responses, and subjective measures of state anxiety/instability were recorded per trial. Patients had slower gait velocities in the Before trials (P < 0.05) but were able to increase this to accommodate the moving sled, with similar learning curves to control subjects (P = 0.87). Although trunk and gait velocity locomotor after-effects were present in both groups, there was a persistence of the locomotor after-effect only in patients (P < 0.05). We observed an increase in gait velocity during After trials towards normal values in the patient group. Instability and state anxiety were greater in patients than controls (P < 0.05) only during explicit phases (Before/After) of the task. Mean 'final' gait termination EMG activity (right gastrocnemius) was greater in the patient group than controls. Despite a dysfunctional locomotor system, patients show normal adaptive learning. The process of de-adaptation, however, is prolonged in patients indicating a tendency to perpetuate learned motor programmes. The trend to normalization of gait velocity following a period of implicit motor learning has implications for gait rehabilitation potential in patients with functional gait disorders and related disorders (e.g. fear of falling). Conductive materials can accelerate and stabilize the conversion of organic substrates to biomethane via direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). However, the potential effect of DIET on complex wastes, such as lignocellulosic biomass, is still unclear. In this study, acetylene black (AB) or hydrochar (HC) were used to enhance the anaerobic digestion (AD) performance of vinegar residue. Results found that methane yield was increased by 50% and 232% with adding 1.0 g/L of HC and AB, respectively. Higher electron conductivity (2.06 S/cm) and specific surface area (74.31 m2/g) of AB indicated effective syntrophic metabolism as compared to that of HC. Interestingly, mono-digestion of AB and HC can also produce methane, with CH4 yield of 23.8 and 118.2 mL/g, respectively. Microbial community analysis showed that family Syntrophomonadaceae and Methanosarcinaceae were enriched after adding of AB or HC, suggesting that the DIET might be facilitated. Background: In animals, many factors affect the small intestinal function and cecal microorganisms, including body weight and genetic background. However, whether paternal weight impacts the small intestinal function and cecal microorganisms remains unknown to date. The current study used Nonghua sheldrake to estimate the effect of paternal weight on the intestine of the offspring by evaluating differences in small intestinal morphology, digestive enzyme activity, and cecal microorganisms between the offspring of male parents with high body weight (group H) and that of male parents with low body weight (group L). Results: The results of the analysis of small intestinal morphology showed that the villus height of the jejunum of group H ducks was higher than that of group L ducks, and the difference was significant for ducks at 10 weeks of age. Moreover, the villus height/crypt depth of the duodenum in group H significantly exceeded that of group L at a duck age of 2 weeks. The amylase activity in the jejunum content of group H exceeded that of group L at 5 and 10 weeks of age. Furthermore, the proportion of the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes was significantly higher in group H (duck age of 2 weeks). Among the genera with a relative abundance exceeding 1%, the relative abundances of genera Desulfovibrio, Megamonas, Alistipes, Faecalibacterium, and Streptococcus observed in group H were significantly different between group H and group L. Conclusions: For the first time, this study identifies the effect of paternal weight on offspring small intestinal function and cecal microorganisms. Recently, modulatory effects of static magnetic field stimulation (tSMS) on excitability of the motor cortex have been reported. In our previous study we failed to replicate these results. It was suggested that the lack of modulatory effects was due to the use of an auditory oddball task in our study. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the role of an oddball task on the effects of tSMS on motor cortex excitability. In a within-subject-design we compared 10 minutes tSMS with and without oddball task. In one of the two sessions subjects had to solve an auditory oddball task during the exposure to the magnet, whereas there was no task during exposure in the other session. Motor cortex excitability was measured before and after tSMS. No modulation was observed in any condition. However, when data were pooled regarding the order of the sessions, a trend for an increase of excitability was observed in the first session compared to the second session. We now can rule out that the auditory oddball task destroys tSMS effects, as postulated. Our results rather suggest that fluctuations in the amplitudes of single pulse motor evoked potentials may possibly mask weak modulatory effects but may also lead to false positive results if the number of subjects in a study is too low. In addition, there might be a habituation effect to the whole procedure, resulting in less variability when subjects underwent the same experiment twice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conductive magnetite (Fe3O4) has been applied into some anaerobic bioprocesses to accelerate direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), however, Fe3O4 is usually dissolved by iron-reducing bacteria under anaerobic conditions, resulting in the loss of magnetite. Therefore, submicron magnetite particles were added to the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to build a Fe3O4/SBR system, which could alleviate magnetite dissolution and simultaneously remove tribromophenol (TBP) effectively. The average removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and TBP in Fe3O4/SBR system were 81% and 91%, respectively, which were 51% and 18% higher than those of the control group without Fe3O4 (SBR system). The enhanced TBP biodegradation was likely related to potential DIET, which was supported by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, the increase of dehydrogenase and heme c (fivefold and 1.7-fold), and the enrichment of iron-redoxing bacteria (Geobacter and Thiobacillus). Furthermore, magnetite mainly remained intact in structure as indicated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), which might be ascribed to in situ iron redox cycle and magnetite biosynthesis via Magnetospirillum. Notably, the content of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) in Fe3O4/SBR system was 4–5 times higher than that of SBR system. Background: Previous studies indicated that the behavioral performances of older adults could be enhanced by multisensory integration. This pilot study tested the benefits of an audiovisual integrative (AV) training for improving the cognitive and upper limb motor functions in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).Methods: Twenty participants, according to their MoCA scores, with ten in each of a MCI (mean age = 63.3 years) and healthy older adult group (mean age = 64.7 years), engaged in AV integrative training. They were recruited from the Institute of Active Ageing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The screening was conducted from February to March 2018 and the training program which consisted of three sessions (2 h each) was conducted from 14-28th May 2018. Their executive function, attention and upper limb functions were measured by the Stroop Test and Purdue Pegboard Test respectively.Results: The mixed linear model analysis results showed significant Time x Group interaction effects in the time used in the Stroop Test (dots) (p = 0.042) and the Purdue Pegboard scores (non-dominant hand use) (p = 0.025). The MCI group exhibited significantly more improvements in attentional control and non-dominant hand motor functions after the training.Conclusions: The findings suggest that the AV integrative training has the potential for enhancing the cognitive and motor functions of older adults with MCI. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation that safely modulates brain excitability and has therapeutic potential for many conditions. Several studies have shown that anodal tDCS of the primary motor cortex (M1) facilitates motor learning and plasticity, but there is little information about the underlying mechanisms. Using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), it has been shown that tDCS can affect local levels of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Glx (a measure of glutamate and glutamine combined) in adults, both of which are known to be associated with skill acquisition and plasticity; however this has yet to be studied in children and adolescents. This study examined GABA and Glx in response to conventional anodal tDCS (a-tDCS) and high definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) targeting the M1 in a pediatric population. Twenty-four typically developing, right-handed children ages 12–18 years participated in five consecutive days of tDCS intervention (sham, a-tDCS or HD-tDCS) targeting the right M1 while training in a fine motor task (Purdue Pegboard Task) with their left hand. Glx and GABA were measured before and after the protocol (at day 5 and 6 weeks) using a PRESS and GABA-edited MEGA-PRESS MRS sequence in the sensorimotor cortices. Glx measured in the left sensorimotor cortex was higher in the HD-tDCS group compared to a-tDCS and sham at 6 weeks (p = 0.001). No changes in GABA were observed in either sensorimotor cortex at any time. These results suggest that neither a-tDCS or HD-tDCS locally affect GABA and Glx in the developing brain and therefore it may demonstrate different responses in adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe herein the clinical, endoscopic, computed tomography (CT), pathologic, and microbiologic features of an infection caused by an under-recognized fungal pathogen, Flavodon flavus, in a 25-y-old Australian Quarter Horse. The horse had a unilateral obstructive nasal mass, resulting in stertor and dyspnea. On endoscopy, the mass was tan, multinodular, and completely obstructed the nasal passage. CT analysis revealed a large, soft tissue–attenuating and partially mineralized mass in the right nasal passage and dorsal-conchofrontal sinus, expanding into adjacent paranasal sinuses with associated bone lysis and rhinosinusitis. Histopathology of the mass on 2 occasions revealed suppurative inflammation initially, and pyogranulomatous inflammation subsequently. The inflammatory reaction surrounded numerous spherical fungal structures (~60–80 µm diameter) that stained positively on periodic acid–Schiff and Grocott methenamine silver stains. PCR for the fungal internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2 regions followed by Sanger sequencing on a cultured isolate identified the agent as F. flavus, which has only been reported previously as pathogenic in one horse in the United States, to our knowledge. Based on a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial, the effects of three dietary supplemental including chromium methionine (Cr) (0 and 400 μg/kg diet), zinc oxide (Zn) (0 and 30 mg/kg diet), and vitamin C (VitC) (0 and 250 mg/kg diet) on egg production (EP) and mass (EM) and egg traits in heat-stressed (HS) Lohmann LSL-Lite laying hens from 30 to 45 weeks of age were evaluated. The house temperature was kept at 18°C (weeks 30-40 of age) and then increased to 32°C (weeks 41-45 of age). Dietary treatments had no significant effects on EP, egg weight, EM, and feed conversation ratio before and after exposure to heat stress (P > 0.05). Decreased feed intake intake was observed in group of VitC during exposing to HS (P < 0.05). Dietary supplemental Cr decreased serum glucose concentration before HS (P < 0.05). A combination of Cr and VitC increased serum glucose concentration before and during HS (P < 0.05). Decreased serum concentration of Zn was detected in hens fed the diets with VitC, Cr, or Zn (P < 0.05). There are unknown interactions between supplements of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (EFE) and the cell walls of feedstuff in ruminal conditions. The quantitative effects of using EFE in ruminant diets were evaluated using meta-analysis. Records (586) were extracted from 74 journal articles from a list of published papers (2000-2012). Statistical analyses were performed considering fixed [type of forage-based diet, forage-to-concentrate ratio (F:C ratio) and primarily enzyme activities in the EFE], and random effects [Experiment(Article)]. In dairy cows fed high-forage (F:C ≥50%), the supplementation of primarily mixtures of cellulases and xylanases (Cel:Xyl: 1:4-1:1) increased milk production and milk composition of legume-based diets, and primarily xylanases (Xyl) EFE improved those variables of grass-based diets. In F:C <50% grass-based diets, Cel:Xyl improved the average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion [FC:DM intake (DMI)/ADG] of beef cattle. DMI of dairy cows was not affected by EFE supplementation, but EFE improved the DMI of beef cattle. EFE effects were inconsistent in sheep productive performance variables. Cellulases (Cel) and Xyl enhanced in vivo dry matter (DM) digestibility (DMD) in low-forage (F:C <50%) grass-based diets. In F:C ≥50% legume-based diets, EFE enhanced the in situ DM disappearance (ISDMD), and mainly Cel:Xyl improved the in situ neutral detergent fibre (NDF) disappearance (ISNDFD), but there were no effects in those variables in F:C ≥50% grass-based diets. Regardless of the type of ruminal liquid (RL) or forage, in F:C ≥50% diets, in vitro DM degradability (IVDMD) was improved mainly by Cel, but fibre degradability only was improved by Cel:Xyl when sheep RL was used for in vitro evaluations. Overall, EFE could improve the productive performance of dairy cows and beef cattle, but the response depends upon the proper mixture of Cel and Xyl according to the diet composition. Soy-lecithin is by product from the processing of soybean oil which, apart from being a source of energy, also serves as an emulsifier and facilitates fat absorption. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of crude soy lecithin in broiler chicken diets on productive performance, apparent nutrient digestibility, blood parameters, carcass traits, and the quality and nutritive value of the meat. Two hundred (Ross 308®) 1 day old of broiler chicks were randomly divided into 2 treatments (5 replications per treatment) with 20 chicks in each experimental unit. Dietary treatment included the corn-soybean meal base diet (control diet), and dietary substitution of crude soy lecithin for crude palm oil (CSL for CPO (5:95)). The results of this study showed that substitution CSL for CPO (5:95) in the diet increased the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, ether extract, gross energy and apparent nutrient metabolism compared with the control group (P<0.05). Furthermore, substitution of CSL for CPO (5:95) in the diet decreased to H/L ratio, total cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride in blood compared with the control group (P<0.05) but did not affect the other blood characteristics (P>0.05). However, substitution of CSL for CPO (5:95) in diet did not effect productive performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality, and economic benefit return (P>0.05). In addition, substitution CSL for CPO (5:95) in diets resulted in significant increases in ether extract, total cholesterol and fatty acid in meat, mainly MUFA, PUFA, Linoleic acid, Linolenic acid, and Arachidonic acid in meat (P<0.05). Objective To evaluate the effects of electric cortical stimulation (ECS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on motor and cognitive function recovery and brain plasticity in focal traumatic brain injury (TBI) of rats model. Methods Forty rats were pre-trained to perform a single pellet reaching task (SPRT), rotarod test (RRT), and Y-maze test for 14 days, then a focal TBI was induced by a weight drop model on the motor cortex. All rats were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: anodal ECS (50 Hz and 194 ìs) (ECS group), tDCS (0.1 mA, 50 Hz and 200 ìs) (tDCS group), and no stimulation as a control group. Four-week stimulation, including rehabilitation, was started 3 days after the operation. SPRT, RRT, and Y-maze were measured from day 1 to day 28 after the TBI was induced. Histopathological and immunohistochemistry staining evaluations were performed at 4 weeks. Results SPRT was improved from day 7 to day 26 in ECS, and from day 8 to day 26 in tDCS compared to the control group (p<0.05). SPRT of ECS group was significantly improved on days 3, 8, 9, and 17 compared to the tDCS group. Y-maze was improved from day 8 to day 16 in ECS, and on days 6, 12, and 16 in the tDCS group compared to the control group (p<0.05). Y-maze of the ECS group was significantly improved on day 9 to day 15 compared to the tDCS group. The c-Fos protein expression was better in the ECS group and the tDCS group compared to the control group. Conclusion Electric stimulation in rats modified with a focal TBI is effective for motor recovery and brain plasticity. Background: Mycotic rhinitis is a rare disease in horses, with few cases reported worldwide and none reported in Australia. Fungal infection of the upper respiratory tract can occur in all species, but its prevalence in horses is considerably lower than in canines or humans. The disease is linked to a variety of pathogens and the clinical signs are associated with subsequent upper respiratory tract damage. Case report: A 6‐year‐old Quarter Horse gelding in Queensland, Australia, was presented with chronic nasal discharge and dyspnoea following previous unsuccessful medical treatment of 9 months’ duration. Culture yielded a mixed growth of Cryptococcus and Rhodotorula, as well as secondary bacterial species. The horse was anaesthetised and positioned in sternal recumbency. The nasal passages and sinuses were bathed with fluconazole and dimethylsulfoxide for 1 h on two separate occasions 4 weeks apart. Systemic antimicrobials and corticosteroids were also administered for brief courses. Endoscopic examination 4 months after treatment demonstrated clinical resolution of the rhinitis with residual scar tissue. Owners reported resolution of clinical signs and following the treatment the gelding was able to perform athletically. Clinical relevance: Mycotic rhinitis is an unusual disease that can be difficult to treat successfully. This report describes a technique for topical sinonasal bathing under general anaesthetic that was well tolerated, easy to perform and resulted in a successful clinical outcome. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of lysolecithin emulsifier on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and blood lipid profiles in growing broiler chickens. In total, 1,020 1-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chickens with an average initial live weight of 43±1.2 g were randomly allotted to five dietary treatments for a 35 d experiment. The treatments included: (1) NC, negative control (metabolizable energy (ME)= 3,100 kcal/kg for phase 1 and phase 2), (2) PC, positive control (ME=3,200 kcal/kg), (3) T1, NC+0.03% lysolecithin, (4) T2, NC+0.06% lysolecithin, and (5) T3, NC+0.09% lysolecithin. During days 1-35, the feed conversion ratios (FCR) of broiler chickens fed with T2 and T3 diets were lower than those of broiler chickens fed with NC diet (P<0.05). On day 35, the total tract nutrient retention (TTNR) of gross energy and ether extract of broiler chickens fed with PC and T3 diets was higher than those fed with NC diet (P<0.05). However, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and free fatty acid levels were not influenced by lysolecithin supplementation. To determine the potential of in vitro duodenal a-amylase and protease assays in evaluating broiler diets with in-feed enzyme supplementation, a total of 320 straight-run day-old broiler chickens were divided into four groups and randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments (T1 is with breedrecommended nutrient levels, T2 is with reduced nutrient levels, T3 is T1+multienzyme, and T4 is T2+multi-enzyme) having eight replications in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with nutrient levels and enzyme addition as main effects. At the end of each of three feeding phases, representative samples of birds were sacrificed for collection of duodenal digesta for the in vitro a-amylase and total protease activity assays. Growth parameters were also calculated. Generally, there were no significant effects of diet on growth performance parameters, and on the a-amylase and total protease activity in all feeding phases. This study suggests that in vitro duodenal a-amylase and protease activity assays can potentially be used to predict the effects of in-feed multienzyme on the growth performance and, thus, the quality of enzyme-supplemented broiler feeds. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique able to modulate cortical excitability in a polarity-dependent way. At present, only few studies investigated the effects of tDCS on the modulation of functional connectivity between remote cortical areas. The aim of this study was to investigate—through graph theory analysis—how bipolar tDCS modulate cortical networks high-density EEG recordings were acquired before and after bipolar cathodal, anodal and sham tDCS involving the primary motor and pre-motor cortices of the dominant hemispherein 14 healthy subjects. Results showed that, after bipolar anodal tDCS stimulation, brain networks presented a less evident “small world” organization with a global tendency to be more random in its functional connections with respect to prestimulus condition in both hemispheres. Results suggest that tDCS globally modulates the cortical connectivity of the brain, modifying the underlying functional organization of the stimulated networks, which might be related to changes in synaptic efficiency of the motor network and related brain areas. This study demonstrated that graph analysis approach to EEG recordings is able to intercept changes in cortical functions mediated by bipolar anodal tDCS mainly involving the dominant M1 and related motor areas. This study was conducted to evaluate the dietary supplementation ofTrichoderma pseudokoningiienzyme powder (EP) and its effect on the growth performance, intestinal morphology and antioxidative status of broilers.In vitroexperiments showed that xylanase and cellulase activities of EP were 487.96 ± 14.14 U/g and 18.55 ± 0.54 U/g, respectively. Total phenolic and ferulic acid content was 4.79 ± 0.35 mg GAE/g DW and 4.38 ± 0.32 μM/g DW, respectively. A total of 240 d-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks were randomly subjected to one of four treatments, namely diets supplemented with dry EP at 0% (control), 0.1%, 0.2% or 0.4% for 35d. Results showed that in the starter phase (1–21 d), the EP supplemented groups had improved body weight, weight gain and FCR compared to the control group. The villus:crypt ratio of both jejunum and ileum in all EP-treated groups was significantly higher than that of the control group. When testing serum antioxidant activity, results showed that 0.2% and 0.4% EP supplementation significantly increased superoxide dismutase activity in both the finisher phase and the overall experimental period. In addition, catalase activity was elevated in all EP supplemented groups in both the finisher phase and throughout the experimental period. 0.1% EP seemed to have no effect during the starter period. Serum malondialdehyde concentration was not affected by EP supplementation. These results suggest that EP is potential feed additive in terms of improving broiler performance and enhancing antioxidative status, while also providing an optimal intestinal environment. A novel laboratory-scale bioelectrode and anaerobic sludge coupled system was established for the enhancement of p-chloronitrobenzenes ( p-ClNB) reductive transformation with addition of magnetite nanoparticles. In this coupled system, the bioelectrodes were supplied with a voltage of 0.8 V and the amount of magnetite nanoparticles was set at 7.4 mL/400 mL. Results showed that high p-ClNB transformation rate of 0.284 h and high p-chloroaniline ( p-ClAn) dechlorination rate of 0.082 h were achieved in the coupled system at p-ClNB initial concentration of 30 mg L, and p-ClAn is one of the reductive products of p-ClNB. The cyclic voltammetry curve showed that when the potential was −1000 mV, the magnetite-biocathode current was about 10.7 times of the abiotic cathode. Also, a shift in the reductive peak potential and a dramatic increase in reductive peak current were observed. These findings suggest that magnetite nanoparticles could enhance the electrocatalytic activity and may act as electron conduits between microorganisms or between electrodes and microorganisms to promote the extracellular electron transfer.
