A built-in capacitive proximity sensing method for a charge-induction electrostatic film actuator is proposed. This actuator consists of two thin sheets that function as a stator and a slider. A stator is an insulating sheet with many strips of electrodes in it, whereas a slider is a dielectric sheet that has slight conductivity on its surface. By applying actuation voltage on stator electrodes, the slider that is placed on the stator is driven by electrostatic force. This research realized the simultaneous actuation and proximity sensing using the same electrodes by integrating a resonance-based capacitance measurement circuit into a driving circuit. The study investigated the impact of having a slider on sensing performance, confirming the feasibility of simultaneous sensing and driving. The performance of the capacitive gap-sensing system plays a critical role in a satellite-based gravity gradiometer that is developed using an electrostatic accelerometer. The capacitive sensing gain mainly depends on the stabilized injection bias amplitude, the gain of the transformer bridge, and the trans-impedance amplifier. Previous studies have indicated that amplitude noise is the main factor influencing the noise of capacitive displacement detection. Analyzing the capacitive gap-sensing system indicates that the amplitude, frequency, phase, and broadband noises of the stabilized injection bias have varying levels of influence on the performance of the detection system. This paper establishes a model to clarify the mentioned effects. Carbon nanotube–glue composite gel-based surface-type elastic sensors with a cylindrical shape deformable (flexible) metallic body were fabricated for tactile pressure and compressive displacement sensing. The fabrication of the sensors was performed using the rubbing-in technique. The effect of the pressure and the compressive displacement on the capacitance and the impedance of the sensors were investigated at various frequencies (in the range of 1 kHz to 200 kHz). It was found that under the effect of pressure from 0 to 9 g/cm2, the capacitance increased by 1.86 and 1.78 times, while the impedance decreased by 1.84 and 1.71 times at the frequencies of 1 kHz to 200 kHz, respectively. The effect of displacement on the impedance and the capacitance of the device was also investigated at various frequencies from 1 kHz to 200 kHz. The results showed that under the effect of compressive displacement up to 25 µm, the impedance of the sensors decreased on average by 1.19 times, while the capacitance increased by 1.09 times, accordingly. The frequency response of the displacement sensor showed that it matched with the low-pass filter. The obtained results are explained based on changes in the shape and geometrical parameters of the cylindrical-shaped conductive body. These results have also been explained on the basis of the distance between the conductive plates of the capacitive sensors during compression, which takes place under the effect of applied pressure or displacement. In the space gravitational wave detection mission, inertial sensors play the role of providing an inertial reference for the laser interferometric measurement system. Among them, the capacitance sensor serves as the core key technology of the inertial sensor, used to measure the relative position of the test mass (TM) in the electrode cage. The capacitance sensor utilizes synchronous demodulation technology to extract signals from the AC induction signal. When the phase of the demodulation switch signal is aligned, the synchronous demodulator can most effectively filter out noise, thus directly influencing the performance of the capacitance sensor. However, since the TM is in a suspended state, the information read by the capacitance sensor is dynamic, which increases the difficulty of demodulation phase alignment. In light of this, a method is proposed for achieving the phase alignment of the demodulation switch signal in a dynamic environment. This is accomplished by adjusting the phase of the demodulation switch signal, and subsequently computing the phase difference between the AC induction signal and the demodulation switch signal. At the same time, a measurement and evaluation method for phase deviation is also proposed. Ultimately, an automatic phase alignment system for the demodulation switch signal in dynamic environments is successfully implemented on an FPGA platform, and tests are conducted on a hexapod PI console platform to simulate dynamic environments. The experimental results demonstrate that the system accurately achieves phase alignment in the static environment, with a phase deviation of 0.1394 rad. Pectus carinatum (PC) is a chest deformity caused by disproportionate growth of the costal cartilages compared with the bony thoracic skeleton, pulling the sternum forwards and leading to its protrusion. Currently, the most common non-invasive treatment is external compressive bracing, by means of an orthosis. While this treatment is widely adopted, the correct magnitude of applied compressive forces remains unknown, leading to suboptimal results. Moreover, the current orthoses are not suitable to monitor the treatment. The purpose of this study is to design a force measuring system that could be directly embedded into an existing PC orthosis without relevant modifications in its construction. For that, inspired by the currently commercially available products where a solid silicone pad is used, three concepts for silicone-based sensors, two capacitive and one magnetic type, are presented and compared. Additionally, a concept of a full pipeline to capture and store the sensor data was researched. Compression tests were conducted on a calibration machine, with forces ranging from 0 N to 300 N. Local evaluation of sensors' response in different regions was also performed. The three sensors were tested and then compared with the results of a solid silicon pad. One of the capacitive sensors presented an identical response to the solid silicon while the other two either presented poor repeatability or were too stiff, raising concerns for patient comfort. Automated hand gesture recognition is a key enabler of Human-to-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and smart living. This paper reports the development and testing of a static hand gesture recognition system using capacitive sensing. Our system consists of a  6 × 18  array of capacitive sensors that captured five gestures—Palm, Fist, Middle, OK, and Index—of five participants to create a dataset of gesture images. The dataset was used to train Decision Tree, Naïve Bayes, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network, and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifiers. Each classifier was trained five times; each time, the classifier was trained using four different participants' gestures and tested with one different participant's gestures. The MLP classifier performed the best, achieving an average accuracy of 96.87% and an average  F 1  score of 92.16%. This demonstrates that the proposed system can accurately recognize hand gestures and that capacitive sensing is a viable method for implementing a non-contact, static hand gesture recognition system. Harvesting energy for IoT nodes in places that are permanently poorly lit is important, as many such places exist in buildings and other locations. The need for energy-autonomous devices working in such environments has so far received little attention. This work reports the design and test results of an energy-autonomous sensor node powered solely by solar cells. The system can cold-start and run in low light conditions (in this case 20 lux and below, using white LEDs as light sources). Four solar cells of 1 cm2 each are used, yielding a total active surface of 4 cm2. The system includes a capacitive sensor that acts as a touch detector, a crystal-accurate real-time clock (RTC), and a Cortex-M3-compatible microcontroller integrating a Bluetooth Low Energy radio (BLE) and the necessary stack for communication. A capacitor of 100 μF is used as energy storage. A low-power comparator monitors the level of the energy storage and powers up the system. The combination of the RTC and touch sensor enables the MCU load to be powered up periodically or using an asynchronous user touch activity. First tests have shown that the system can perform the basic work of cold-starting, sensing, and transmitting frames at +0 dBm, at illuminances as low as 5 lux. Harvesting starts earlier, meaning that the potential for full function below 5 lux is present. The system has also been tested with other light sources. The comparator is a test chip developed for energy harvesting. Other elements are off-the-shelf components. The use of commercially available devices, the reduced number of parts, and the absence of complex storage elements enable a small node to be built in the future, for use in constantly or intermittently poorly lit places. Stable grasps are essential for robots handling objects. This is especially true for "robotized" large industrial machines as heavy and bulky objects that are unintentionally dropped by the machine can lead to substantial damages and pose a significant safety risk. Consequently, adding a proximity and tactile sensing to such large industrial machinery can help to mitigate this problem. In this paper, we present a sensing system for proximity/tactile sensing in gripper claws of a forestry crane. In order to avoid difficulties with respect to the installation of cables (in particular in retrofitting of existing machinery), the sensors are truly wireless and can be powered using energy harvesting, leading to autarkic, i.e., self-contained, sensors. The sensing elements are connected to a measurement system which transmits the measurement data to the crane automation computer via Bluetooth low energy (BLE) compliant to IEEE 1451.0 (TEDs) specification for eased logical system integration. We demonstrate that the sensor system can be fully integrated in the grasper and that it can withstand the challenging environmental conditions. We present experimental evaluation of detection in various grasping scenarios such as grasping at an angle, corner grasping, improper closure of the gripper and proper grasp for logs of three different sizes. The most widely used soft grippers are pneumatically driven; they are simple and effective but require bulky air compressors that limit their application space and external sensors or computationally expensive vision systems for pick verification. In this study, a multi‐material architecture for self‐sensing electrohydraulic bending actuators is presented that enables a new class of highly versatile and reconfigurable soft grippers that are electrically driven and feature capacitive pick verification and object size detection. These electrohydraulic grippers are fast (step input results in finger closure in 50 ms), draw low power (6.5 mW per finger to hold grasp), and can pick a wide variety of objects with simple binary electrical control. Integrated high‐voltage driving electronics are presented that greatly increase the application space of the grippers and make them readily compatible with commercially available robotic arms. A graphene-based capacitive NO2 sensing device was developed by utilizing the quantum capacitance effect. We have used a graphene field-effect transistor (G-FET) device whose geometrical capacitance is enhanced by incorporating an aluminum back-gate electrode with a naturally oxidized aluminum surface as an insulating layer. When the graphene, the top-side of the device, is exposed to NO2, the quantum capacitance of graphene and, thus, the measured capacitance of the device, changed in accordance with NO2 concentrations ranging from 1–100 parts per million (ppm). The operational principle of the proposed system is also explained with the changes in gate voltage-dependent capacitance of the G-FET exposed to various concentrations of NO2. Further analyses regarding carrier density changes and potential variances under various concentrations of NO2 are also presented to strengthen the argument. This study presents the design and implementation of a capacitive type pressure sensor with vertically integrated deformable hermetic chambers based on the standard commercial processes (the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) 0.18- $\mu \text{m}$ 1P6M complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process) and the in-house post CMOS processes. The proposed pressure sensor features the realization of two vertically integrated hermetic chambers consisting of two deformable diaphragms with embedded sensing electrodes and one diaphragm with reference electrodes. Thus, the sensitivity of the pressure sensor can be improved for near twofold within the same footprint. Moreover, the stepped structure is designed to reduce the stiffness of the deformable diaphragms to further enhance the sensitivity of the proposed sensor. The feasibility of the proposed design has been evaluated through both finite element method (FEM) simulations and experiments. Measurement results indicate, as compared with the reference design with only one deformable hermetic chamber, the proposed pressure sensor with vertically integrated deformable hermetic chambers has a near twofold enhancement in sensitivity within the pressure range of 20–120 kPa. A flexible fiber-coupled confocal laser endomicroscope has been developed using an electrostatic micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) scanner located in at distal optics to collect in vivo images in human subjects. Long transmission lines are required that deliver drive and sense signals with limited bandwidth. Phase shifts have been observed between orthogonal ${X}$ - and ${Y}$ -scanner axes from environmental perturbations, which impede image reconstruction. Image-processing algorithms used for correction depend on image content and quality, while scanner calibration in the clinic can be limited by potential patient exposure to lasers. We demonstrate a capacitive sensing method to track the motion of the electrostatically driven 2-D MEMS scanner and to extract phase information needed for image reconstruction. This circuit uses an amplitude modulation (AM) envelope detection method on shared drive and sensing electrodes of the scanner. Circuit parameters were optimized for performance given high scan frequencies, transmission line effects, and substantial parasitic coupling of drive signal to circuit output. Extraction of phase information further leverages nonlinear dynamics of the MEMS scanner. The sensing circuit was verified by comparing with data from a position sensing detector (PSD) measurement. The phase estimation showed an accuracy of 2.18° and 0.79° in ${X}$ - and ${Y}$ -axes for motion sensing, respectively. Cysticercosis, caused by Taenia solium infection, is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy in many developing countries. Several types of immunoassays have been developed for the detection of Taenia solium infection in both infected humans and livestock animals. However, these methods require central laboratory facilities and are both time- and labor-consuming with longer than desired turnaround time. In this work, we demonstrated that AC electrokinetics (ACEK) capacitive sensing can be used to realize point-of-care immunosensor in general, with the on-site screening of Taenia solium infection as an example here. The sensor employs interdigitated microelectrodes (IDME) functionalized with a recombinant Taenia solium antigen, rT24H, to detect anti-rT24H antibodies in clinical serum samples. ACEK capacitive sensing method interrogates the IDME sensors with a special AC signal, which serves the dual purposes of enriching target antibodies by ACEK effects and directly measuring the capacitance change induced by specific binding. First, to characterize the ACEK biosensor as an immunosensor in general, IgG in phosphate-buffered saline buffer was tested against IDME sensors functionalized with anti-IgG. The limit of detection of the sensor was 24.1 fg/mL, and the linear dynamic range was 0.1–100 pg/mL. To test the clinical usage of this sensor, ACEK capacitive sensors with rT24H probe were used to test clinical serum samples from patients with or without Taenia solium infection. The diagnostic sensitivity of the ACEK capacitive sensor for Taenia solium infection was found to be 88.24%. ACEK capacitive immunosensors have shown good potential for point-of-care diagnostics. In space gravitational-wave-detection missions, inertial sensors are used as the core loads, and their acceleration noise needs to reach 3 × 10 − 15   ms − 2 / Hz at a frequency of 0.1   mHz , which corresponds to the capacitive sensing system; the capacitive sensing noise on the sensitive axis needs to reach 1   aF / Hz . Unlike traditional circuit noise evaluation, the noise in the mHz frequency band is dominated by the thermal noise and the 1 / f noise of the device, which is a challenging technical goal. In this paper, a low-frequency, high-precision resonant capacitor bridge method based on a planar transformer is used. Compared with the traditional winding transformer, the developed planar transformer has the advantages of low temperature drift and low 1 / f noise. For closed-loop measurements of capacitive sensing circuits and sensitive structures, the minimum capacitive resolution in the time domain is about 3   aF , which is far lower than the scientific measurement resolution requirement of 5.8   fF for gravitational wave detection. The capacitive sensing noise is converted to 1.095   aF / Hz in the frequency band of 10   mHz – 1   Hz . Although there is a gap between the closed-loop measurement results and the final index, the measurement environment is an experimental condition without temperature control on the ground; additionally, in China, the measurement integrity and actual measurement results of the capacitive sensing function have reached a domestic leading level. This research aims at contributing to a seamless, integrated technology intelligent living system for solitary older adults at home. The capacitive intimate sensing module, that can be easily pasted to the existing home space element surfaces, daily objects, or home furniture, such as a wall, door, stairs, a chair, cabinet, table, sofa, etc, is developed in this research. This 30 × 30 cm sensing module can actively sense people's physical behaviors and body movements in spaces. The signals acquired from the sensing modules in indoor spaces will then integrate into the controller system through the IoT application and logically define the behavior classification. From the preliminary analysis of observing the 80-year-old elderly subject's daily activities, the movement trajectory of the 'Move–Stop' pattern is found. There will be a touch (T) and a touchless (TL) relationship between the body and the space elements or objects. The touchless or non-contact intimate relationship also can be divided into two types: 1. the body 'Passes by' (P) the spatial elements or objects, and 2. the body 'Stays' (S) in front of the object and performs activities. This research pasted eight sensing modules on nine objects in six spaces. Finally, the specific actions and life pattern can be recognized and analyzed through the developed IoT spatial behavior smart system and provide the customized intelligent application function for the elderly. The problems of the traditional type grating angular displacement encoder make it difficult to balance the measurement performance of miniaturization, high precision and high resolution, and the ability to resist vibration and shock is poor. In this article, a multivector variable-area capacitive angular displacement encoder based on a rotating electric field is proposed. Based on the principle of constructing a rotating electric field, a three-layer transmissive sensing structure with upper and lower layers of electrode plates and a modulation rotor as the middle layer is proposed and designed. A single-channel signal is used as the input excitation signal of the capacitive sensor to avoid the problem of mismatching multiple input signals. A pair of quadrature signals reflecting the spatial angle information is obtained through electric field demodulation and differential processing. The phase demodulation method based on the time scale is further adopted to improve the precision of demodulation. Simulations and experiments show that the sensor has a diameter of 50 mm, a thickness of 5 mm, a resolution of $0.81''$ , an accuracy of $2.5''$ , and a maximum nonlinear error of $40''$. Passive electric field sensing can be utilized in a wide variety of application areas, although it has certain limitations. In order to better understand what these limitations are and how countervailing measures to these limitations could be implemented, this paper contributes an in-depth discussion of problems with passive electric field sensing and how to bypass or solve them. The focus lies on the explanation of how commonly known signal processing techniques and hardware build-up schemes can be used to improve passive electric field sensors and the corresponding data processing. This work presents the development of a porous silicon-based capacitive sensor for the time-effective and low-cost detection and quantification of organic solvents. The prototype chip was fabricated using a mechanized pulse fiber laser etching process in order to develop a single-layer silicon substrate with uniform porous structures. This enables a consistent surface area for sample distribution inside the pores and provides highly repeatable results essential for silicon-based sensor chip development. The fabricated chip was characterized using a scanning electron microscope, and it shows an average pore diameter of 55.22 μm and pore depth of 98.9 μm. The proposed sensor exhibits stable results up to 35 days at room temperature, and this demonstrates its superior performance over other porous silicon-based optical sensor chips. The application of the proposed sensor chip has been shown for sensing and quantification of the Atrazine chemical, which is a pesticide solvent utilized in farming to control weeds. Soil Moisture (SM) is one of the most critical factors for a crop's growth, yield, and quality. Although Ground-Penetrating RADAR (GPR) is commonly used in satelite observation to analyze soil moisture, it is not cost-effective for agricultural applications. Automotive RADAR uses the concept of Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and is more competitive in terms of price. This paper evaluates the viability of using a cost-effective RADAR as a substitute for GPR for soil moisture content estimation. The research consisted of four experiments, and the results show that the RADAR's output signal and the soil moisture sensor SEN0193 have a high correlation with values as high as 0.93 when the SM is below 15%. Such results show that the tested sensor (and its cost-effective working principle) are able to determine soil water content (with certain limitations) in a non-intrusive, proximal sensing manner. The coplanar capacitive sensing method is considered a relatively novel electromagnetic technique in NDT. The size of the electrodes and the separation distance between them significantly affect the penetration depth, electric field strength, and sensitivity of the measurement. To achieve different penetration depths and electric field strengths, separate sensors with various sizes $/$ separations can be employed which is time-consuming. In order to reduce the costs and time, a multi-electrode sensor is designed and introduced in this paper. This type of sensor uses coplanar electrodes to generate the multiple fringing electric field to inspect the specimen. In this sensor, it is possible to have multiple driving and sensing electrodes at the same time, which provides a variety of different sizes and separation distances leading to various depths of penetration and electric field strengths. In the framework of this paper, the principle of the multi-electrode coplanar capacitive probe was explained. A 3D Finite Element Modelling (FEM) was employed to simulate and illustrate the electric field distribution from a multi-electrode coplanar capacitive sensor with different arrangements of driving and sensing electrodes, and how this field may be altered by changing the arrangement. The multi-electrode probe was manufactured and several sets of experiments were conducted under various conditions. The Measurement Sensitivity Distribution (MSD) was applied to characterise and interpret the variable output from the physical scan of the specimen. The world population growth and average life expectancy rise have increased the number of people suffering from non-communicable diseases, namely osteoarthritis, a disorder that causes a significant increase in the years lived with disability. Many people who suffer from osteoarthritis undergo replacement surgery. Despite the relatively high success rate, around 10% of patients require revision surgeries, mostly because existing implant technologies lack sensing devices capable of monitoring the bone–implant interface. Among the several monitoring methodologies already proposed as substitutes for traditional imaging methods, cosurface capacitive sensing systems hold the potential to monitor the bone–implant fixation states, a mandatory capability for long-term implant survival. A multifaceted study is offered here, which covers research on the following points: (1) the ability of a cosurface capacitor network to effectively monitor bone loosening in extended peri-implant regions and according to different stimulation frequencies; (2) the ability of these capacitive architectures to provide effective sensing in interfaces with hydroxyapatite-based layers; (3) the ability to control the operation of cosurface capacitive networks using extracorporeal informatic systems. In vitro tests were performed using a web-based network sensor composed of striped and interdigitated capacitive sensors. Hydroxyapatite-based layers have a minor effect on determining the fixation states; the effective operation of a sensor network-based solution communicating through a web server hosted on Raspberry Pi was shown. Previous studies highlight the inability of current bone–implant fixation monitoring methods to significantly reduce the number of revision surgeries, as well as promising results of capacitive sensing systems to monitor micro-scale and macro-scale bone–interface states. In this study, we found that extracorporeal informatic systems enable continuous patient monitoring using cosurface capacitive networks with or without hydroxyapatite-based layers. We present a study on wearable capacitive patches with engineered dielectrics to be used as a strain sensor and a piezoelectric sensor with multi-modal sensing capabilities. The patches consist of a parallel plate capacitive structure with highly (100%) stretchable textile electrodes and silicone or PDMS elastomers. The gauge factor of the capacitive strain sensor is enhanced two-fold with the inclusion of high- ${k}$ Barium Titanate (BTO) nanoparticles dispersed in the silicone dielectric layer without sacrificing their excellent linearity or superb durability easily exceeding 2000 cycles. In addition to enhanced dielectric response, inclusion of BTO as well as other additives, namely PZT and PVDF-TrFE, in PDMS also induces piezoelectricity in the sensors at different weight ratios systematically studied by bending and vibrational tests. Corona poling of the piezo dielectrics improves their voltage output by at least two folds. Besides the piezoelectricity, tests on unpoled samples also uncovered evidence for triboelectricity in the nanocomposites. The proposed textile patches can simultaneously detect multiple stimuli such as strain, pressure, temperature, bending, vibration, and acoustic feedback. Deployed in appropriate locations and geometries, the patches can capture critical information on the type, strength, and duration between episodic movements and environmental factors, as demonstrated via a shoe-insert, elbow tracker, respiratory and heart-rate monitors. We report the real time characterization and measurement results of a new tri-axial capacitive sensing array. Each unit cell of the Kapton based sensor has an overlapping electrode geometry that allows for the measurement of normal and shear force magnitudes, and the estimation of the 2D and 3D angle of the shear force. The use of a patterned Ecoflex dielectric layer further improves the shear force response and the tunability of the sensor. A custom readout circuit was developed to selectively read the differential capacitances in the sensor array. The local (unit cell) and global (array) force response of the sensor was characterized using a tilt stage, allowing us to determine both the normal and the shear response at different angles in the range of 0-20N. The results show that the Unit Cell response is uniform in the linear range of 0-10N for normal forces (4.6fF/N for all four differential capacitances) and shows good sensitivity for shear forces (1.4 fF/N difference between the right and left differential capacitances at the minimum) and low cross talk. Similar results were seen when a global force was applied across the sensor array. 2D and 3D models were developed to extrapolate the shear force angle from the capacitance data. We also characterized the flexible patterned dielectric layer to understand the effect of its structural dimensions on the effective relative permittivity and developed an analytical model to easily calculate the effective relative permittivity, which showed excellent correlation with the experimentally obtained results. Wearable biopotential sensing devices are essential to long-term and real-time monitoring of human health. Non-contact, capacitive sensing electrodes prevent potential skin irritations, and are thus beneficial for long-term monitoring. Existing capacitive electrodes are either connected to a separate control circuit via external wires or have limited sensing capacitances, which leads to low signal qualities. This study demonstrates a stretchable capacitive sensing device with integrated electrodes and control electronics, with enhanced signal qualities. The electrodes and the control electronics are fabricated on a common fabric substrate for breathability and strain-limiting protection. The stretchable electrodes are based on an island-bridge design with a stretchability as high as ∼ 100%, and an area ratio as high as ∼ 80%. By using a dielectric calcium copper titanate (CCTO) composite as the adhesive layer, the electrode capacitance can be increased, yielding an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the acquired biopotentials. A growing interest towards healthcare and lifestyle change in recent years has facilitated extensive research in the field of biosensors. In this work, a highly sensitive, robust and cost-effective capacitive biosensor has been proposed and its applicability towards testing fruit freshness has been experimentally demonstrated. The fabricated TiO2-based thin film sensors are incorporated with microgap cavities which when embedded into the fruit surface becomes sensitive to any dielectric (Єk) changes that occur in the fruit during the phase of rotting. Capacitive sensing has become a favorable measurement technology for flow metering in pneumatic conveying systems. Multielectrode sensing structures and tomographic signal evaluations enable spatially resolved flow parameter estimation, which is of particular interest for pneumatically conveyed solids due to inhomogeneous particle distributions within the pipeline. The noninvasive working principle of capacitive sensors is an important feature for the application in industrial processes with harsh environments. However, cross sensitivities of the capacitive probe cause effects, such as temperature drifts of the measurements. For a reliable operation of capacitive flow meters in harsh environments, induced drifts have to be compensated. In this article, we present the detailed analyses of thermal effects within capacitive sensors. Based on the findings, a model-based temperature compensation approach is developed within the Bayesian framework. The performance of the proposed compensation approach is analyzed by a measurement-based validation within a climate chamber and by a simulation-based uncertainty quantification. It was recently demonstrated that a coplanar capacitive sensor could be applied to the evaluation of materials without the disadvantages associated with the other techniques. This technique effectively detects changes in the dielectric properties of the materials due to, for instance, imperfections or variations in the internal structure, by moving a set of simple electrodes on the surface of the specimen. An AC voltage is applied to one or more electrodes and signals are detected by others. This is a promising inspection method for imaging the interior structure of the numerous materials, without the necessity to be in contact with the surface of the sample. In this paper, finite element (FE) modeling was employed to simulate the electric field distribution from a coplanar capacitive sensor and the way it interacts with a nonconducting sample. Physical experiments with a prototype capacitive sensor were also performed on a Plexiglas sample with subsurface defects, to assess the imaging performance of the sensor. For decades, the revolution in design and fabrication methodology of flexible capacitive pressure sensors using various inorganic/organic materials has significantly enhanced the field of flexible and wearable electronics with a wide range of applications in aerospace, automobiles, marine environment, robotics, healthcare, and consumer/portable electronics. Mathematical modelling, finite element simulations, and unique fabrication strategies are utilized to fabricate diverse shapes of diaphragms, shells, and cantilevers which function in normal, touch, or double touch modes, operation principles inspired from microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based capacitive pressure sensing techniques. The capacitive pressure sensing technique detects changes in capacitance due to the deformation/deflection of a pressure sensitive mechanical element that alters the separation gap of the capacitor. Due to advancement in state‐of‐the‐art fabrication technologies, the performance and properties of capacitive pressure sensors are enhanced. In this review paper, recent progress in flexible capacitive pressure sensing techniques in terms of design, materials, and fabrication strategies is reported. The mechanics and fabrication steps of paper‐based low‐cost MEMS/flexible devices are also broadly reported. Stretchable strain sensors are important components of soft robotics, rehabilitation assistance, and human health monitoring systems. However, strain sensors capable of wide‐range force detection with adjustable modulus facilities are highly desirable to obtain mechanical feedback in various scenarios. Herein, a stretchable capacitive strain sensor capable of adjustable modulus and wide‐range force detection is reported. The sensor consists of two liquid metals (LMs) filled thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) tubes encapsulated in flexible silicone. The adjustable modulus capability of the sensor is attained by mounting the sensor with springs of different elastic coefficients. During electromechanical tests, the elastic coefficient‐dependent adjustable modulus is obtained in the range of 0.78–10.3 MPa. After optimizing the performance, a sensor capable of wide force‐sensing range (0.07–74 N), high cyclic stability (>3500 cycles), with low hysteresis, good linearity, and fast response time (<50 ms) is achieved. Finally, a digital display system is developed to display the amount of detected force during the loading of the sensor, which confirms the great capability of the sensor to be applied in joint rehabilitation and soft robotic fields. The thermomechanical motion imposes the fundamental noise limit in room-temperature resonant sensors and oscillators. Due to the inherently low sensitivity of capacitive transduction in microelectromechanical (MEM) resonators, its effects are often masked by noise in the subsequent amplifier and measurement stages. In this work, we demonstrate a capacitive transduction scheme for measuring kHz-MHz frequency MEM resonators across 1 $\mu \text{m}$ capacitive gaps with 99.8% thermomechanical-noise-limited resolution. We delineate the transimpedance gain and noise of our custom off-chip differential transimpedance amplifier setup. The thermomechanical noise spectrum can provide estimates of the resonant frequency, quality factor, and electromechanical transduction factor comparable to the commonly used driven response, without the downsides of capacitive feedthrough or nonlinearity. Large interactive surfaces enable novel forms of interaction for their users, particularly in terms of collaborative interaction. During longer interactions, the ergonomic factors of interaction systems have to be taken into consideration. Using the full interaction space may require considerable motion of the arms and upper body over a prolonged period of time, potentially causing fatigue. In this work, we present Curved, a large-surface interaction device, whose shape is designed based on the natural movement of an outstretched arm. It is able to track one or two hands above or on its surface by using 32 capacitive proximity sensors. Supporting both touch and mid-air interaction can enable more versatile modes of use. We use image processing methods for tracking the user's hands and classify gestures based on their motion. Virtual reality is a potential use case for such interaction systems and was chosen for our demonstration application. For partial lower-limb exoskeletons, an accurate real-time estimation of the gait phase is paramount to provide timely and well-tailored assistance during gait. To this end, dedicated wearable sensors separated from the exoskeletons mechanical structure may be preferable because they are typically isolated from movement artifacts that often result from the transient dynamics of the physical human–robot interaction. Moreover, wearable sensors that do not require time-consuming calibration procedures are more easily acceptable by users. In this paper, a robotic hip orthosis was controlled using capacitive sensors placed in orthopedic cuffs on the shanks. The capacitive signals are zeroed after donning the cuffs and do not require any further calibration. The capacitive-sensing-based controller was designed to perform online estimation of the gait cycle phase via adaptive oscillators, and to provide a phase-locked assistive torque. Two experimental activities were carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Experiments conducted with seven healthy subjects walking on a treadmill at different speeds demonstrated that the controller can estimate the gait phase with an average error of 4%, while also providing hip flexion assistance. Moreover, experiments carried out with four healthy subjects showed that the capacitive-sensing-based controller could reduce the metabolic expenditure of subjects compared to the unassisted condition (mean $\pm$  SEM, $-$ 3.2% $\pm$  1.1). Atmospheric ice accretion is considered a severe safety issue for technical systems such as communication infrastructure, power lines, blades of wind turbines, and so on in cold climate regions. Among different sensing systems to detect and provide reliable information about the state of ice, capacitive sensing has been reported as a suitable technique. In capacitive sensing, measured capacitances are influenced due to ice accretion. Signal processing for ice sensors requires to estimate parameters for the state of ice from the data. In this paper, we present a model-based estimation approach for capacitive ice sensors. We analyze different electrode topologies for ice sensing and provide a statistical analysis of the sensor behavior. We hereby consider the random nature of natural ice accretion. From simulations, we show how a statistical model for the measurement process can be derived and demonstrate the construction of estimation algorithms within the Bayesian framework. We will demonstrate the capability of our approach for automated ice detection by means of long-term field data showing the ability to estimate ice layers with a precision better than 1 mm. Here, we introduce a wireless platform developed to leverage biochemical characteristics of various gastrointestinal (GI) secretions to selectively dissolve pH-sensitive polymers used as coatings over a 3-D printed biocompatible capsule, allowing fluid entry into sensing chambers containing capacitive sensors. Ingestible capsule technology is increasing prevalence in autonomously accessing regions of GI that otherwise require clinical intervention. Our platform is operated using a 3.3-V power source with sensors, possessing a 0.3–220-pF dynamic range with a sensitivity of $3.2\times10^{-3}$ pF/mV that relay the change in capacitance to a smart system-in-package, which is then transmitted via Bluetooth low energy to an external Android phone. The system is tested with a variety of polymers, which are used in the pharmaceutical industry, to control dissolution at different GI regions characteristic of a specific pH profile. The integrated module of microfluidics with the biosensor is of great research interest with the increasing trend of lab-on-the-chip and point-of-care devices. Though there are numerous studies performed on associating the microfluidics to the biosensing mechanisms, the study of the sensitivity variation due to microfluidic flow is very much limited. In this paper, a study of the sensitivity variation while detecting the CA-125 antigen using interdigitated electrodes, with static drop and with microfluidic flow of biofluid sample (CA-125 antigens with phosphate buffer saline solution), was performed. When the biofluid sample was passed on the CA-125 antibodies that are immobilized on the gold interdigitated electrodes, the capacitance variation of the sensing circuit was caused due to the antigen–antibody interaction. However, the capacitance measured during CA-125 antigen–antibody interaction with the microfluidic flow condition (270.34 pF) was lower than static drop condition (296.09 pF) due to the instability of the immobilized antibodies on the sensing surface that was caused by the shear stress on the sensing surface during the microfluidic flow. Disposable point-of-care biomedical applications demand low-cost biosensing systems that can provide rapid detection with accessible fabrication requirements and user-friendly operation. Here, we present an easy-to-operate and cleanroom-free desktop-fabricated biosensor that is capable of reliable detection for human D-dimer biomarkers on-site. Interdigitated electrodes are used as the biosensor, and they are fabricated using commercial compact discs and home-made gadgets. The compact disc-based electrode arrays are patterned by wet-etching and followed by electroplating of polypyrrole (PPy). The nano-porous structures of PPy enhance the immobilization of protein probe on the electrode surface. The sensor performance is further enhanced by the ac electrokinetics (ACEK) capacitive sensing method. ACEK capacitive sensing induces ACEK effects that direct analytes toward the electrode surfaces, significantly promoting probe-target binding. Our sensor can quantitatively detect D-dimer biomarkers in 1 min with a limit of detection of 1 pg/mL. In contrast, Nyquist or Bode plots can only qualitatively distinguish positive and negative samples. Furthermore, the total cost of each test, together with the lithography material and compact disk, is only around U.S. $1, and it is acceptable to be disposable. Electric fields exist everywhere. They are influenced by living beings, conductive materials, and other charged entities. Electric field sensing is a passive capacitive measurement technique that detects changes in electric fields and has a very low power consumption. We explore potential applications of this technology and compare it to other measurement approaches, such as active capacitive sensing. Five prototypes have been created that give an overview of the potential use cases and how they compare to other technologies. Our results reveal that electric field sensing can be used for indoor applications as well as outdoor applications. In this paper, we present a capacitive, MEMS-based accelerometer comprising an ultra-low noise CMOS integrated readout-IC and a high-precision bulk micro machined sensing element. The resulting accelerometer reaches an acceleration equivalent noise of only 200 ng/ $\surd $ Hz, which makes it suitable for seismic measurement that require noise levels significantly below 1 $\mu \text{g}/\surd $ Hz. In addition, a high bandwidth of more than 5 kHz was achieved, which also makes the presented sensor system applicable for high-frequency measurements, e.g., in predictive maintenance applications for rotating machinery. In this paper, a first approach to the design of a portable device for non-contact monitoring of respiratory rate by capacitive sensing is presented. The sensing system is integrated into a smart vest for an untethered, low-cost and comfortable breathing monitoring of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients during the rest period between respiratory rehabilitation exercises at home. To provide an extensible solution to the remote monitoring using this sensor and other devices, the design and preliminary development of an e-Health platform based on the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) paradigm is also presented. In order to validate the proposed solution, two quasi-experimental studies have been developed, comparing the estimations with respect to the golden standard. In a first study with healthy subjects, the mean value of the respiratory rate error, the standard deviation of the error and the correlation coefficient were 0.01 breaths per minute (bpm), 0.97 bpm and 0.995 (p < 0.00001), respectively. In a second study with COPD patients, the values were –0.14 bpm, 0.28 bpm and 0.9988 (p < 0.0000001), respectively. The results for the rest period show the technical and functional feasibility of the prototype and serve as a preliminary validation of the device for respiratory rate monitoring of patients with COPD. This paper presents a multi-functional capacitive sensor that is developed to improve the worker safety during the industrial human–robot interactions. The sensor is to be mounted on the worker and used to maintain a safe distance between the workers and robots or automotive parts moved by the robots. The response of a capacitive proximity sensor is a function of the distance to an object as well as the dielectric/conductance and geometry properties of the object. This uncertainty can lead to a wrong distance estimation or possibly a missed detection. The presented approach alleviates this issue by implementing three sensing capabilities including distance measurement, motion tracking, and profile recognition in a single platform. The presented sensor employs a capacitive sensing element coupled to reprogrammable interface electronics. The sensing element features a matrix of electrodes that can be reconfigured to various arrangements at run-time by controlling the interface electronics to obtain a more detailed perception of the ambient environment. Quantitative regression models are built to seek out distances while an adaptive classification tool based on support vector machines is employed to recognize the surface profiles. The performance of the sensing modalities has been experimentally assessed. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate that the system is able to detect a metallic object at distances of up to 18 cm with high resolutions, track its motion, and provide an estimate for its shape. We describe a device engineered for realistic simulation of myringotomy and tympanostomy tube insertion that tracks instrument placement and objectively measures operator proficiency. A 3-dimensional computer model of the external ear and cartilaginous external auditory canal was created from a normal maxillofacial computed tomography scan, and models for the bony external auditory canal and tympanic cavity were created with computer-aided design software. Physical models were 3-dimensionally printed from the computer reconstructions. The external auditory canal and tympanic cavity surfaces were coated with conductive material and wired to a capacitive sensor interface. A programmable microcontroller with custom embedded software completed the system. Fabrication of TiO2 nanotubes-based solid-state vapor sensor (Au/TiO2 nanotubes/Ti) and its performance analysis for both resistive- and capacitive-mode sensing mechanisms are discussed here. Highly ordered TiO2 nanotubes array has been synthesized by the electrochemical anodization technique. Structure and morphology of the as-grown TiO2 nanotubes have been characterized using X-ray diffraction and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the chemical states of the TiO2 nanotubes. The sensor device has successfully been tested for ethanol vapor. The effect of temperature, pressure, and reducing ambient (i.e., partial pressure of ethanol vapor) has been studied using the impedance analysis method. The resistive and capacitive components of the impedance were measured individually. The sensor resistance decreased by 93.38%, whereas the capacitance increased by 28789.95% after an exposure to 1000 ppm of ethanol. Both the resistive and capacitive sensing performance of Au/TiO2 nanotubes/Ti device have been correlated with the proposed circuit model to achieve an improvised vapor sensing. Although useful for many applications, the practical use of tagless remote human identification is often hampered by privacy, usability, reliability, or cost concerns. In this paper, we explore the use of capacitive sensors, which appear to address most of these concerns, to identify different persons based on the unique electric and dielectric properties of their bodies given by their specific tissue composition. We present experimental results obtained by measuring the capacitance of a 16~\text cm\times 16~\text cm transducer plate 70 cm in front of different human bodies at different frequencies in the 5–160-kHz range. The measurements show clearly distinct signatures of capacitance variation with frequency for each person in the experiment, even after accounting for capacitance variations due to different body masses or physical dimensions. Clinical breast examinations (CBEs) are a vital part of breast cancer screening programs. However, there is a lack of standardization in the kinds of motion and the forces used during the examination, which can lead to either an inaccurate or a missed diagnosis. The use of sensors in CBE simulations and training can help to alleviate this issue. This paper demonstrates a flexible, three-axis capacitive touch-force sensor that utilizes a patterned elastomeric dielectric layer. The sensor was fabricated from a copper-clad Kapton laminate and can resolve normal pressure and track directional motion. The electronic and mechanical properties of the patterned dielectric layer were analyzed in detail using finite-element analysis techniques and these results were then used to optimize the sensor. In a mock CBE setup, we used a breast model to demonstrate that the sensor, when placed under the model, could track a normal force of about 18 N when applied to the test area, as well as the trajectory of the force as it was applied around the breast model. This data, along with the accompanying variations in signal patterns, can be utilized to quantify the CBE conducted by an expert physician, which in turn can be used as feedback in training tools for residents and other physicians. Inkjet printing is an advanced printing technology that has been used to develop conducting layers, interconnects and other features on a variety of substrates. It is an additive manufacturing process that offers cost-effective, lightweight designs and simplifies the fabrication process with little effort. There is hardly sufficient research on tactile sensors and inkjet printing. Advancements in materials science and inkjet printing greatly facilitate the realization of sophisticated tactile sensors. Starting from the concept of capacitive sensing, a brief comparison of printing techniques, the essential requirements of inkjet-printing and the attractive features of state-of-the art inkjet-printed tactile sensors developed on diverse substrates (paper, polymer, glass and textile) are presented in this comprehensive review.
