Voluntary genetic testing (GT) leverages low-cost DNA sequencing and other testing methods to provide genetic risk screening for healthy individuals. Given the potential to prevent disease and promote health, some employers now offer GT as an employee benefit (workplace GT, or wGT), but participation remains low. To investigate facilitators and barriers to wGT participation, we conducted one of the first representative surveys of working U.S. adults on this topic (n = 958). We assessed factors that could influence participation, including: sponsoring entity (health provider or employer), program design, and individual demographics. Two-thirds (68%) of respondents indicated willingness to participate in some type of GT, but only half (49%) expressed willingness to participate through their employer. Women were 60% more willing to participate than men, and individuals with previous genetic testing experience were 143% more willing to participate than those without such experience. Across all demographic groups, certain GT program design features tended to increase or decrease willingness to participate. The ability to have one's data deleted from the GT database increased willingness most often (true for 67% of respondents), while selling data to pharmaceutical companies decreased willingness most often (true for 63% of respondents). Background: Several major sensitization profiles have been described in children with asthma, but it remains unclear how these profiles relate to asthma phenotypes. The aim of this study was to determine allergenic sensitization profiles in a megacity cohort (SAMP). Methods: This was a cross‐sectional analysis performed from 2011 to 2015 including preschool and school‐age children with severe and moderate asthma from the SAMP cohort. We performed ALEX multiplex array and carried out cluster analysis. Results: Data from 367 children were analyzed: 224 of preschool age and 143 of school age, respectively 84 (38%) and 114 (80%) presented at least one allergic sensitization. At preschool age, three clusters were identified: Cluster 1, Few sensitizations to inhaled allergen molecular families and non‐type 2 (T2) inflammation (n = 61); Cluster 2, Predominant sensitization to HDM molecular families (n = 16); Cluster 3, Severe asthma with multiple sensitizations to inhaled and food allergen molecular families (n = 7). At school age, five clusters were identified: Cluster 1, Few sensitizations to inhaled allergen molecular families and non‐T2 inflammation (n = 43); Cluster 2, Predominant sensitization to HDM molecular families (n = 31); Cluster 3, Predominant sensitization to PR‐10 protein family (n = 25); Cluster 4, Severe asthma with predominant sensitization to tropomyosin family (n = 11); Cluster 5, Severe asthma with multiple sensitizations to inhaled and food allergen molecular families (n = 4). Conclusion: These results underline the heterogeneity of sensitization profiles in severe allergic childhood asthma. The most severe asthma phenotypes were associated with multiple sensitizations to both inhaled and food allergen molecular families as expected, and to the tropomyosin molecular family, a novel finding. Background: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) in children has specific features and requires multidisciplinary management. Methods: We performed a literature search and underwent in‐depth discussions to provide practical tools for physicians. Results: HAE is a rare, life‐threatening genetic disorder. Its epidemiology is poorly documented in children. Clinical manifestations usually appear during childhood or early adolescence. Classical signs, often preceded by prodromal symptoms, include transient, localized, non‐pitting, non‐pruritic swelling of deep dermal/subcutaneous or mucosal/submucosal tissues, leading to oedema of the extremities, face, lips, tongue, trunk and genitals, recurring gastrointestinal symptoms and laryngeal edema possibly causing asphyxiation and death. Diagnosis is often delayed due to low awareness in the medical community, and particularly challenging in case of isolated abdominal crises or atypical presentation and in neonates or infants. It relies on biological tests (measurement of serum/plasma levels of C1INH function, C1INH protein, and C4), genetic testing in selected cases, and imaging for differential diagnosis of acute abdominal crises. Main differential diagnosis for peripheral oedema is mast cell‐mediated oedema that accounts for 95% of angioedema in clinical practice. Quality of life can be significantly impaired. Disease management includes treatment of attacks, short‐term and long‐term prophylaxis, psychological support, avoidance of triggers, patients' and parents' education and coordination of all stakeholders, ideally within a specialized healthcare network. New plasma kallikrein inhibitors, namely lanadelumab (subcutaneous route) and berotralstat (oral route) have facilitated long‐term prophylaxis thanks to improved usability. Background: This correlative study aimed to examine how the different primary care models (physicians in solo practice, physicians in collaborative practice, physicians and nurse practitioners in collaborative practice, after-hours clinics, community centers, or emergency rooms) were associated with their capability to offer timely access to their patients. The data collected from the primary care provider's perspective was to complete the New Brunswick Health Council results on patients' perspective. Methods: A convenience sample of 120 primary care providers (33 physicians in solo practice, 33 physicians in collaborative practice, 27 providers in collaborative practice with nurse practitioners, 2 providers working in after-hours clinics, and 10 providers in Emergency departments) responded to an online survey about their primary care models and accessibility. We used the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software to run correlations, independent t-tests and Fisher's exact tests to compare timely access to care between variable groups. Results: A positive correlation was observed between patient load (or the number of patients under a primary care provider's practice), age and years of experience. However, the patient load did not translate to more timely access to care. However, a statistically significant difference (p = 0.032) was observed when primary care providers kept appointment slots available for daily urgent requests. When a primary care provider booked all available appointment slots, only 85% of them could offer timely appointments (in 5 days or less), compared to 97% who could deliver it when appointment slots were left open in their daily schedule. The primary care model (solo vs. collaboration), the use of health technologies and the type of provider did not significantly influence timely access to care. In contrast, the primary care providers who reported teleworking (or working remotely) were less likely to offer timely access to care. Conclusion: Timely access to care is not always available to patients, even those with a primary care provider. Aboveground biomass density (AGBD) estimates from Earth Observation (EO) can be presented with the consistency standards mandated by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This article delivers AGBD estimates, in the format of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Tier 1 values for natural forests, sourced from National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) and Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat-2), and European Space Agency's (ESA's) Climate Change Initiative (CCI). It also provides the underlying classification used by the IPCC as geospatial layers, delineating global forests by ecozones, continents and status (primary, young (≤20 years) and old secondary (>20 years)). The approaches leverage complementary strengths of various EO-derived datasets that are compiled in an open-science framework through the Multi-mission Algorithm and Analysis Platform (MAAP). This transparency and flexibility enables the adoption of any new incoming datasets in the framework in the future. The EO-based AGBD estimates are expected to be an independent contribution to the IPCC Emission Factors Database in support of UNFCCC processes, and the forest classification expected to support the generation of other policy-relevant datasets while reflecting ongoing shifts in global forests with climate change. In adults, monocytes and neutrophils play important roles in the hyperinflammatory responses characteristic of severe forms of SARS-CoV-2 infection. We assessed leukocyte activation in 55 children attending the emergency department for acute fever between March 2020 and September 2021. The following markers were analyzed by flow cytometry: CD169 and HLA-DR on monocytes, CD64 and CD16 on neutrophils, and CD38 on lymphocytes TCD8. Fifteen of the children had SARS-CoV-2 infection, 15 had bacterial infections, and 15 had inflammatory diseases. We observed overexpression of CD169 on monocytes and CD38 on T lymphocytes in all patients with a diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2, while overexpression of CD64 on neutrophils was observed with bacterial infections and inflammatory diseases. There was a decrease in the expression of HLA-DR on monocytes in the bacterial infection and inflammatory pathology groups. Low levels of essential mineral elements such as cobalt, copper, and iron, in organisms reduce immune function, increasing the chances of parasitic infection. This phenomenon has been demonstrated widely in domestic animals but rarely in wildlife. In this study, we used data from 7‐ to 9‐month‐old roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), living in two different populations facing contrasting environmental conditions (Trois‐Fontaines and Chizé), to investigate whether the parasitic and immunological statuses could be related to essential element status. Between 2016 and 2019, we collected feces to measure parasite burdens (gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes), blood to measure immunological parameters (globulins and white blood cells), and hair to assess the concentration of 11 essential elements (calcium [Ca], chromium [Cr], cobalt [Co], copper [Cu], iron [Fe], magnesium [Mg], manganese [Mn], potassium [K], molybdenum [Mo], selenium [Se], and zinc [Zn]). The results showed first heterogeneity in the individual phenotypes of the two populations. Roe deer with low body mass had high concentrations of all the essential elements (in particular, Ca, Fe, Cu, K, and Mn), a high parasitic burden, and high concentrations of globulins. An association between high concentrations of essential elements and a high parasite burden was found at the two study sites despite markedly different environmental conditions. A relationship between essential element concentrations and immune parameters was also detected, with more basophils and globulins being associated with high concentrations of essential trace elements (i.e., Ca, Fe, Cu, and, to a lesser extent, Se, Cr, and Zn). These results suggest that young individuals with low body mass and high parasitism may select feeding resources rich in mineral elements, which may improve their ability to control the infestation and/or mitigate the negative consequences of parasites by maintaining immune system functions. Background/Objectives: There is a gap between the very positive opinion of patients and doctors regarding knee viscosupplementation (VS) and the contrasting results of controlled studies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the overall satisfaction and predictors of satisfaction with VS in patients with knee osteoarthritis treated with VS. Methods: Post-hoc analysis of a cross-sectional study in patients with knee OA treated with one injection of a mannitol-modified cross-linked HA (HANOX-M-XL). The primary outcome was satisfaction, self-assessed semi-quantitatively by the patients. Demographics, radiological features, comorbidities, OA and comorbidities treatments, and lifestyle associated with satisfaction were studied in bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results: 89 patients (124 knees) were analyzed. A total of 88.7% were satisfied with the treatment. Satisfaction was correlated with duration of effectiveness (DoE) and negatively correlated with BMI. Satisfaction was higher in active versus sedentary patients, in tibiofemoral involvement, in Kellgren-Lawrence grade 1–3 versus 4, and in subjects not requiring intraarticular corticosteroid (IACS) concomitantly to VS. Satisfied subjects were older than dissatisfied ones. In multivariate analysis, older age, K–L grade < 4, absence of IACS, and longer DoE were associated with higher rates of satisfaction. Conclusions: We identified several predictive factors of patient satisfaction after VS of the knee. Neutrophils are the most abundant leukocytes in humans and play a role in the innate immune response by being the first cells attracted to the site of infection. While early studies presented neutrophils as almost exclusively glycolytic cells, recent advances show that these cells use several metabolic pathways other than glycolysis, such as the pentose phosphate pathway, oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid oxidation, and glutaminolysis, which they modulate to perform their functions. Metabolism shifts from fatty acid oxidation–mediated mitochondrial respiration in immature neutrophils to glycolysis in mature neutrophils. Tissue environments largely influence neutrophil metabolism according to nutrient sources, inflammatory mediators, and oxygen availability. Inhibition of metabolic pathways in neutrophils results in impairment of certain effector functions, such as NETosis, chemotaxis, degranulation, and reactive oxygen species generation. Alteration of these neutrophil functions is implicated in certain human diseases, such as antiphospholipid syndrome, coronavirus disease 2019, and bronchiectasis. Metabolic regulators such as AMPK, HIF-1α, mTOR, and Arf6 are linked to neutrophil metabolism and function and could potentially be targeted for the treatment of diseases associated with neutrophil dysfunction. Parental investment increases offspring fitness at the expense of the parent's ability to invest in other offspring. In many animal species, parents guard their offspring after birth. The parental decision over the duration of this period is expected to be triggered by the associated fitness costs and benefits for both offspring and parents. Here, we evaluated the relevance of several intrinsic and environmental variables in determining brooding period duration in the wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans) and questioned whether brooding duration was related to chick subsequent survival and biometry prior to fledging. We used a semi‐experimental design to increase the variance in cat abundance, a recent predator of albatross chicks, and predicted that an increased predation risk at the nest scale would trigger longer chick brooding and thus, protection. In addition, we questioned the influence of weather conditions, hatching date, and characteristics of chicks (sex and biometry) and parents (sex and age) on brooding duration. We report no effect of predation risk or parental characteristics on brooding duration. However, the probability for a parent to end brooding decreased with forthcoming unfavorable weather. Our data also revealed reduced brooding duration for late‐hatched chicks and a positive association between brooding duration and chick structural size, and between the frequency of shifts between parents and chick structural size. Finally, brooding duration was not associated with chick survival or with chick biometry prior to fledging. A review of the cuticular and sensory metatibial and metatarsal structures in cixiid planthoppers (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha) is proposed, depicting both their strong disparity and the great diversity of the patterns observed. Terminology and definitions for these structures are provided. The so-called lateral teeth of the metatibia in fact are particular styloconic sensory structures, called spiniform sensilla in Cixiidae. The apical metatibiotarsal teeth are non-sensory cuticular expansions, often bearing one or several chaetic sensilla ventrally, generally distributed in an internal and an external group of three teeth each, in some instances separated by a diastema; innermost and outermost teeth are generally larger. On the first tarsomere seven to eight teeth generally occur in one row, although two rows are observed in Brixidiini. A strong diversity of conformations and patterns is observed in the second metatarsomere. A specific subdorsal sensillum, of platellar type, may be present in the first metatarsomere teeth for a few taxa. It is generally present in the second metatarsomere, either as a narrow-based acutellar sensillum or as a broad-based platellar sensillum according to the taxon. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses of 54 species of cixiids from all described tribes of the family, supplemented by data from the literature, are used to provide a metatibiotarsal diagnosis for each of the tribes of Cixiidae. In the state of our knowledge of the sufficiently precise observations of metatibiotarsal structures in the Cixiidae which are available, and of the phylogeny of the group as a frame of reference for their interpretations, we note that the observed patterns are probably the result of multiple and independent convergences and evolutionary regressions. These occurred at all levels of cixiid classification. Although these patterns can be useful in the identification of taxa at a low taxonomic level, they would be less useful for phylogenetic approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tropical forest degradation from selective logging, fire and edge effects is a major driver of carbon and biodiversity loss1–3, with annual rates comparable to those of deforestation4. However, its actual extent and long-term impacts remain uncertain at global tropical scale5. Here we quantify the magnitude and persistence of multiple types of degradation on forest structure by combining satellite remote sensing data on pantropical moist forest cover changes4 with estimates of canopy height and biomass from spaceborne6 light detection and ranging (LiDAR). We estimate that forest height decreases owing to selective logging and fire by 15% and 50%, respectively, with low rates of recovery even after 20 years. Agriculture and road expansion trigger a 20% to 30% reduction in canopy height and biomass at the forest edge, with persistent effects being measurable up to 1.5 km inside the forest. Edge effects encroach on 18% (approximately 206 Mha) of the remaining tropical moist forests, an area more than 200% larger than previously estimated7. Finally, degraded forests with more than 50% canopy loss are significantly more vulnerable to subsequent deforestation. Collectively, our findings call for greater efforts to prevent degradation and protect already degraded forests to meet the conservation pledges made at recent United Nations Climate Change and Biodiversity conferences.A global survey on the magnitude and persistence of moist forest cover change and canopy height following degradation using satellite remote sensing data finds that the effects are substantial and persist for decades. Phylogenetic analyses of planthoppers were conducted using a mitogenome dataset to examine the evolutionary relationships of current families based on both maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference methods. Delphacoidea, including Cixiidae and Delphacidae, and Fulgoroidea, including all other families, were consistently identified as monophyletic groups. However, Nogodinidae displayed a polyphyletic pattern, with various lineages emerging sister to several issidoid families. Variations were observed across different analyses in the positioning of (Dictyopharidae + Fulgoridae) and the relationships of Ricaniidae sister either to Issidae or to (Flatidae + Acanaloniidae). Several statistical tests indicate that the ML topology has the highest level of statistical confidence. The (Dictyopharidae + Fulgoridae) clade is best positioned as sister to (Derbidae + (Achilidae + (Tropiduchidae + other "higher" planthoppers families))) and the Ricaniidae as sister to (Flatidae + Acanaloniidae). With 13 fossil calibration points, origin times for Delphacoidea and Fulgoroidea were dated back to the Late Permian, approximately 257.46 million years ago. Delphacidae and Cixiidae split during the Late Triassic, while Fulgoroidea diversified earlier during the Middle Triassic. Divergence and diversification times are also provided for all other extant planthopper families. These results suggest that Delphacoidea and Fulgoroidea likely diverged from the older planthopper fossil families prior to the emergence of angiosperms and may have initially fed on gymnosperms and ancient ferns. The diversification of extant planthopper families occurred during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, influenced by evolving climatic conditions, the decline in gymnosperms, and the increasing diversity of angiosperm plants. A magnetic field is generated to modify the effective gravity acting on settling particles in a laboratory experiment. When applied to a magnetized spherical particle settling in water-glycerol mixtures, the magnetic field produces a vertical force that counteracts the gravitational field, hence allowing for the magnetic tuning of the settling properties of the particle. While doing so, the spin of the particle around the direction perpendicular to the applied magnetic field is blocked, thus allowing spin solely around the direction of the magnetic field. This method of magnetic modification of the effective gravity is tested on the settling of spherical magnets in quiescent fluids over Galileo numbers in the range [100, 300] and a fixed particle density of 8200 kg/m 3 . The results obtained by varying the Galileo number via the magnetic modification of effective gravity are compared to those obtained with non-magnetic spheres when the Galileo number is modified by varying the fluid's viscosity. We show that the same taxonomy of settling regimes with nearly identical geometrical properties (in terms of planarity and obliqueness) of the trajectories is recovered. In addition to proving that it is possible to magnetically tame the settling of particles in fluids preserving the features of the non-magnetic case, this also reveals that blocking the spin of the particles does not produce any significant effect on its settling properties in a quiescent fluid. This novel experimental methodology opens new possibilities to experimentally explore many other subtle aspects of the coupling between settling particles and fluids (for instance, to disentangle the effects of rotation, inertia, and/or anisotropy of the particles) in more complex situations including the case of turbulent flows. In intensive care units, COVID‐19 viral pneumonia patients (VPP) present symptoms similar to those of other patients with Nonviral infection (NV‐ICU). To better manage VPP, it is therefore interesting to better understand the molecular pathophysiology of viral pneumonia and to search for biomarkers that may clarify the diagnosis. The secretome being a set of proteins secreted by cells in response to stimuli represents an opportunity to discover new biomarkers. The objective of this study is to identify the secretomic signatures of VPP with those of NV‐ICU. Plasma samples and clinical data from NV‐ICU (n = 104), VPP (n = 30) or healthy donors (HD, n = 20) were collected at Nantes Hospital (France) upon admission. Samples were enriched for the low‐abundant proteins and analyzed using nontarget mass spectrometry. Specifically deregulated proteins (DEP) in VPP versus NV‐ICU were selected. Combinations of 2 to 4 DEPs were established. The differences in secretome profiles of the VPP and NV‐ICU groups were highlighted. Forty‐one DEPs were specifically identified in VPP compared to NV‐ICU. We describe five of the best combinations of 3 proteins (complement component C9, Ficolin‐3, Galectin‐3‐binding protein, Fibrinogen alpha, gamma and beta chain, Proteoglycan 4, Coagulation factor IX and Cdc42 effector protein 4) that show a characteristic receptor function curve with an area under the curve of 95.0%. Simple Summary: An increasing number of fossil specimens of planthoppers from Burmese amber are being described. Few of them belong to extant families. Here, we described two new fossil species of Pentacarinus: P. maculosus sp. nov. and P. tenebrosus sp. nov. in the tribe Acrotiarini in the extant family Cixiidae, from Kachin state of northern Myanmar. A revised diagnosis for the genus and a key to species identification are also provided. Two new species, Pentacarinus maculosus sp. nov. and Pentacarinus tenebrosus sp. nov., from Burmese amber are described. Alongside the type species P. kachinensis already described, they are easily distinguishable by the tegmina patterns. The diagnosis of the genus Pentacarinus is amended, notably with fusion of Pcu + A1 distad of forking CuA, the fork ScP + R approximately close to basal 1/5 of tegmen, basad of forking CuA, and only one transverse veinlet ir between RP and RA on forewings. The planthopper superfamily Fulgoroidea (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha) currently includes more than 14 000 described species in about 21 extant families. Despite multiple studies attempted, based on morphological characters or DNA sequence data, the phylogeny of this superfamily remains unsatisfactorily resolved. Here we reconstruct the phylogenetic relationship among the families of this superfamily based on the whole mitogenome sequences from 113 species representing 17 planthopper families and three families as outgroups, in which 41 species of Fulgoroidea were sequenced for this study. The phylogenetic trees were reconstructed based on three different datasets, both by maximum likelihood (ML, IQtree) and Bayesian inference (BI, MrBayes, and PhyloBayes). The tree topologies of ML and BI analyses were quite similar with only a few differences in some clades. The phylogenetic results showed that Cixiidae and Delphacidae were placed as sister-taxa at the base of this superfamily; the clade Fulgoridae + Dictyopharidae appeared younger than the Meenoplidae + Kinnaridae one, Derbidae and Achilidae were more recently derived than Fulgoridae + Dictyopharidae without depicting a monophyletic unit, and Tropiduchidae and Acanaloniidae appeared as sister-taxa. The divergence-time estimation analysis shows that most planthoppers underwent relatively rapid radiation during the Jurassic and Cretaceous. Divergence time between Cixiidae and Delphacidae can be traced back to the Middle Jurassic; Meenoplidae, Fulgoridae, and Issidae originated in the Lower Cretaceous; Lophopidae and Eurybrachidae can be traced to the Upper Cretaceous. This paper reconstructs the cladogram of Fulgoroidea based on more comprehensive mitogenome sequences so far, which could provide new clues for a better understanding of the evolution of this superfamily. This article explores the use of anti-IL5 therapy as a potential treatment option for severe refractory vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) in children. VKC is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects children and is often associated with other allergic conditions. The article presents two cases where children with severe VKC were successfully switched to anti-IL5 therapy after previous treatment failures. While the therapy showed some improvement in symptoms and inflammation, topical corticosteroids were still necessary. The article suggests that further research and clinical trials are needed to confirm the efficacy of anti-IL5 therapy for refractory VKC, and emphasizes the importance of personalized treatment approaches based on individual patient profiles. InGaAs/InP-based negative-feedback avalanche diodes (NFADs) have been demonstrated to be an excellent option for photon detection at telecom wavelengths in quantum communication applications, where photon arrival times are random. However, it is well-known that the operation of NFADs at low temperatures (193 K or below) is crucial to minimize the effects of afterpulsing and high dark count rates (DCRs). In this work, we present a new versatile readout electronics system with active afterpulse suppression that also offers flexible cooling options. Through the characterization of two NFAD detectors from Princeton Lightwave, Inc. and a thorough evaluation of our electronics' performance under various operating conditions, we demonstrate the effectiveness of this readout system in improving the performance of NFAD-based photon detectors. At the optimal bias for NFADs, our electronics were able to significantly reduce the afterpulsing probability by a factor of 200 for dead times ranging from 5 to 20 µs following each detection event. This helps to keep the total DCRs at around 100 counts per second or less for a 20 µs hold-off time. The versatility of our detection system makes NFADs a cost-effective alternative to more complex detectors, such as superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, in the research of long-distance quantum communications and low-noise single photon detectors at telecommunication wavelengths. Background: An advanced radiological stage and obesity are predictive of poorer and shorter responses to viscosupplementation in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Very little is known regarding the impact of other factors such as sport practice, comorbidities, or anatomical features of OA. Methods: This study aimed to investigate patients' and OA characteristics associated with the duration of the effectiveness (DE) of viscosupplementation in patients with knee OA. It was a cross-sectional, single-centre clinical trial in patients with knee OA treated with intra-articular (IA) hyaluronic acid (HA) injection(s) within the previous 3 years. The investigators collected data regarding demographic and radiographic features (Kellgren–Lawrence grade and involved knee compartments), dosing regimen (single or repeat injections), the presence and volume of joint effusion, previous or concomitant IA corticosteroid injection, the number of previous viscosupplementations, and comorbidities. Patients completed a questionnaire including the self-assessment of DE (the number of weeks during which viscosupplementation was effective on symptoms), the activity level (sedentary, active, or athletic), and the level of sport activity (light, moderate, or intensive). Predictors of the DE were studied in bivariate and multivariate analyses. Results: In total, 105 patients (149 knees) were analysed (62% women, mean age 66.1 ± 13.2 years, mean BMI 27.5 ± 7.5 kg/m2). The mean DE was 48.2 ± 24.8 weeks. In bivariate analysis, the predictors of a shorter DE were BMI > 27.5 kg/m2, more than three previous viscosupplementations, Kellgren–Lawrence grade 4, sedentary patients, and multicompartmental involvement. In the multivariate analysis, four independent factors remained associated with a shorter DE: BMI > 27.5 kg/m2, multicompartmental knee involvement, number of viscosupplementations >3, and sedentary lifestyle. A statistically significant association between a longer DE and arterial hypertension was found, suggesting a beneficial effect of certain antihypertensive medications. Conclusions: This study confirms that being overweight significantly reduces the duration of the effectiveness of viscosupplementation. It also shows that viscosupplementation is more lastingly effective in unicompartmental OA and among active or athletic patients. Techniques currently used for the study of antigen‐specific T‐cell responses are either poorly informative or require a heavy workload. Consequently, many perspectives associated with the broader study of such approaches remain mostly unexplored in translational research. However, these could benefit many fields including but not limited to infectious diseases, oncology, and vaccination. Herein, the main objective of this work was to develop a standardized flow cytometry‐based approach that would combine ease of use together with a relevant study of antigen‐specific T‐cell responses so that they could be more often included in clinical research. To this extent, a streamlined approach relying on 1/ the use of whole blood instead of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and 2/ solely based on the expression of extracellular activation‐induced markers (AIMs), called whole blood AIM (WAIM), was developed and further compared to more conventional techniques such as enzyme‐linked immunospot (ELISpot) and flow cytometry‐based intracellular cytokine staining (ICS). Based on a cohort of 20 individuals receiving the COVID‐19 mRNA vaccine and focusing on SARS‐CoV‐2 and cytomegalovirus (CMV)‐derived antigen T‐cell‐specific responses, a significant level of correlation between the three techniques was found. Based on the use of whole blood and on the expression of extracellular activation‐induced markers (CD154, CD137, and CD107a), the WAIM technique appears to be very simple to implement and yet allows interesting patient stratification capabilities as the chosen combination of extracellular markers exhibited higher orthogonality than cytokines that are commonly considered in ICS (IFN‐γ, TNF‐α, and IL‐2). Background: Pollen allergy poses a significant health and economic burden in Europe. Disease patterns are relatively homogeneous within Central and Northern European countries. However, no study broadly assessed the features of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) across different Southern European countries with a standardized approach. Objective: To describe sensitization profiles and clinical phenotypes of pollen allergic patients in nine Southern European cities with a uniform methodological approach. Methods: Within the @IT.2020 multicenter observational study, pediatric and adult patients suffering from SAR were recruited in nine urban study centers located in seven countries. Clinical questionnaires, skin prick tests (SPT) and specific IgE (sIgE) tests with a customized multiplex assay (Euroimmun Labordiagnostika, Lübeck, Germany) were performed. Results: Three hundred forty‐eight children (mean age 13.1 years, SD: 2.4 years) and 467 adults (mean age 35.7 years SD: 10.0 years) with a predominantly moderate to severe, persistent phenotype of SAR were recruited. Grass pollen major allergenic molecules (Phl p 1 and/or Phl p 5) ranged among the top three sensitizers in all study centers. Sensitization profiles were very heterogeneous, considering that patients in Rome were highly poly‐sensitized (sIgE to 3.8 major allergenic molecules per patient), while mono‐sensitization was prominent and heterogeneous in other cities, such as Marseille (sIgE to Cup a 1: n = 55/80, 68.8%) and Messina (sIgE to Par j 2: n = 47/82, 57.3%). Co‐sensitization to perennial allergens, as well as allergic comorbidities also broadly varied between study centers. Conclusions: In Southern European countries, pollen allergy is heterogeneous in terms of sensitization profiles and clinical manifestations. Despite the complexity, a unique molecular, multiplex, and customized in‐vitro IgE test detected relevant sensitization in all study centers. Nevertheless, this geographical diversity in pollen allergic patients imposes localized clinical guidelines and study protocols for clinical trials of SAR in this climatically complex region. Simple Summary: An increasing number of fossil planthoppers from Burmese ambers are regularly newly described, yet few belong to extant families. In this study, we describe new fossil taxa in the family Achilidae: Niryasaburnia nigrutomia sp. nov. and Sinuovenaxius kachinensis gen. et sp. nov. Additionally, we propose the establishment of a new tribe, Niryasaburniini trib. nov., to accommodate these two genera. A key for identifying tribes within the Myconinae subfamily is provided. A new species Niryasaburnia nigrutomia sp. nov. of the planthopper family Achilidae from Burmese amber collected from Hukawng Valley (Tanai) of northern Myanmar, is described, notably based on forewing pattern coloration and metatibiotarsal teeth conformation. A new fossil genus with its type species Sinuovenaxius kachinensis gen. et sp. nov. is also described. The tribe Niryasaburniini trib. nov. is established to include Niryasaburnia Szwedo, 2004, and Sinuovenaxius gen. nov., based on a unique combination of characters, of which the following states are particularly notable: head with compound eyes around half the length of pronotum, late forking of ScP+R and CuA after the fusion of Pcu+A1 on the forewing, apical teeth of metatarsomeres I and II both with subapical platellar sensilla, and a unique hindwing pattern with simple RP and biforked MP, CuA with two terminals only, and with A2 simple, reaching the posterior wing margin. Background: In clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), first-line treatment combines nivolumab (anti-PD-1) and ipilimumab (anti-CTLA4), yielding long-term remissions but with only a 40% success rate. Our study explored the potential of enhancing ccRCC treatment by concurrently using CXCR2 inhibitors alongside immunotherapies. Methods: We analyzed ELR + CXCL levels and their correlation with patient survival during immunotherapy. RCT001, a unique CXCR2 inhibitor, was examined for its mechanism of action, particularly its effects on human primary macrophages. We tested the synergistic impact of RCT001 in combination with immunotherapies in both mouse models of ccRCC and human ccRCC in the presence of human PBMC. Resuts: Elevated ELR + CXCL cytokine levels were found to correlate with reduced overall survival during immunotherapy. RCT001, our optimized compound, acted as an inverse agonist, effectively inhibiting angiogenesis and reducing viability of primary ccRCC cells. It redirected M2-like macrophages without affecting M1-like macrophage polarization directed against the tumor. In mouse models, RCT001 enhanced the efficacy of anti-CTLA4 + anti-PD1 by inhibiting tumor-associated M2 macrophages and tumor-associated neutrophils. It also impacted the activation of CD4 T lymphocytes, reducing immune-tolerant lymphocytes while increasing activated natural killer and dendritic cells. Similar effectiveness was observed in human RCC tumors when RCT001 was combined with anti-PD-1 treatment. Conclusions: RCT001, by inhibiting CXCR2 through its unique mechanism, effectively suppresses ccRCC cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and M2 macrophage polarization. Successful bioinspired design depends on practitioners' access to biological data in a relevant form. Although multiple open-access biodiversity databases exist, their presentation is often adapted to life scientists, rather than bioinspired designers. In this paper, we present a new tool, "Bioinspire-Explore", for navigating biodiversity data in order to uncover biological systems of interest for a range of sectors. Bioinspire-Explore allows users to search for inspiring biological models via taxa (species, genera, etc.) as an entry point. It provides information on a taxon's position in the "tree of life", its distribution and climatic niche, as well as its appearance. Bioinspire-Explore also shows users connections in the bioinspiration literature between their taxon of interest and associated biological processes, habitats, and physical measurements by way of their semantic proximity. Holistic nursing practice requires an understanding of the constraints of poverty as one of the social determinants of health. Future nurses need to be change agents for social justice. A descriptive, qualitative study was conducted to explore students' experience of the Missouri Association for Community Action Poverty Simulation© (CAPS) and its impact on empathy and social justice awareness among a purposive sample of 56 sophomore baccalaureate nursing students at a public university in the Northeastern United States. Inductive thematic analysis was applied to data collected from a postparticipation reflection paper. Five themes emerged: (a) emotions, (b) personal history of poverty, (c) empathy, (d) rising advocacy, and (e) lessons learned. The results support that the CAPS simulation provides an experiential opportunity which impacts empathy and foundational attitudes to be a change agent for social justice. Recommendations include structured education about social determinants of health prior to the CAPS simulation, continued education throughout nursing curricula, and experiential opportunities to apply social justice skills before graduation. This article provides an overview of the developments made over the last 10 years within RayXpert®, a CAD-based geometry 3D Monte Carlo software developed by TRAD – Tests & Radiations. The main features of RayXpert® are its 3D Monte Carlo engine and its CAD-based geometry. It is also possible to import STEP file, automatically detect overlaps, and perform parallel Monte Carlo computations. During the last 10 years, numerous new features were added to the software: TTB approximation, dose and flux mapping, computation resumption, radioactive decay computation, script support, MPI computation, advanced convergence indicators, etc. New features such as advanced biasing or neutron-induced activation simulation are under development. This paper investigates the referential information structure (IS) of full and reduced specificational it-clefts, which interacts as a distinct layer with their relational IS. Drawing on spontaneous spoken data from the London-Lund Corpus, this study examines how discourse-new and discourse-given information, i.e., referential IS, is distributed over the clefted noun phrase (NP) and cleft-relative clause. To assess the discourse-familiarity of nominal referents and open propositions, I develop an analytical model hinging on the predictability of information in accordance with the prospective dynamic of spoken language. The findings show that the distribution of given and new information is more diverse than described in existing typologies. In particular, it is revealed that the hitherto overlooked pattern in which both value and variable are discourse-given and in which the specification relation may be new or given is in fact the most common one. The findings also show that the choice between full and reduced it-clefts as two basic options is only partly motivated by the discourse-familiarity of the variable. The analysis of the prosodically coded relational IS reveals that multiple prosodic patterns can be mapped onto each category of clefts, thus demonstrating that the conflation of the referential and relational IS of it-clefts is untenable. Planthoppers are an interesting and contrasting model among insects for studying the subterranean environments. Their morphological and ethological adaptations to the underground conditions (complete darkness, lower temperatures, high hygrometry, stability of environmental constants, rarefied food sources, etc.), and their worldwide distribution in both temperate and tropical areas make them an interesting model among invertebrates. In this review, we highlight why cave planthoppers study matters, with particular emphasis on the Cixiidae. The two hypotheses proposed, the 'climatic relict hypothesis' and the 'adaptive shift', are not sufficient enough to clearly understand and explain the drivers to cavernicoly. Phylogenetic analyses approaches might help to better document and increase our knowledge on such peculiar environments. The singularity of the distribution pattern of the adaptation to cavernicoly in planthoppers raises also interesting questions to investigate and suggest contrasting scenarios to explore further, particularly should the Cixiidae be defined as a subtroglophile lineage? The evolution of the normal aerodynamic coefficient of 19 configurations of square plates with various porosity patterns, ranging from solid plate to homogeneous porous plate, is experimentally characterized. The variation of the porosity pattern is obtained by partially covering the holes of a commercial fly-swatter using adhesive tape. Evolution of the normal aerodynamic coefficient is assessed from the measurement of the angular position of the porous plate, placed as a freely rotating pendulum swept by a flow in a wind tunnel. These angular measurements are also supported by particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements of the structure of the wake. We show that the porosity pattern determines whether or not an abrupt stall occurs. In particular, the details of the porosity pattern on the edges of the plate are decisive for the existence of abrupt stall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To evaluate the feasibility of continuous determination of the optimal mean arterial blood pressure (opt-MAP) according to cerebral autoregulation and to describe the opt-MAP, the autoregulation limits, and the time spent outside these limits in children within 48 h of cardiac surgery. Cerebral autoregulation was assessed using the correlation coefficient (COx) between cerebral oxygenation and MAP in children following cardiac surgery. Plots depicting the COx according to the MAP were used to determine the opt-MAP using weighted multiple time windows. For each patient, we estimated (1) the time spent with MAP outside the autoregulation limits and (2) the burden of deviation, defined as the area between the MAP curve and the autoregulation limits when the MAP was outside these limits. Fifty-one patients with a median age of 7.1 (IQR 0.7–52.0) months old were included. The opt-MAP was calculated for 94% (IQR 90–96) of the monitored time. The opt-MAP was significantly lower in neonates < 1 month old. The patients spent 24% (18–31) of the time outside of the autoregulation limits, with no significant differences between age groups. From 2007 to 2019, over 650 public schools closed in Puerto Rico. School closures not only affect students and teachers; these spaces serve as anchor institutions providing social infrastructure for the sustained health of communities. While closed schools remove a critical community asset, these vacant buildings provide adaptive reuse opportunities for alternative social infrastructure and community resources. This article explores how abandoned schools are repurposed in Puerto Rico, focusing on "rescued schools"—that is, grassroots, voluntary initiatives that repurpose schools to support community development. Through a multi-method approach, we categorized and mapped 161 repurposed schools throughout Puerto Rico—38 were rescued schools—and conducted twelve interviews and two focus groups on rescued school initiatives. Our results describe how abandoned schools offer a galvanizing opportunity for motivated community members to meet emerging, localized needs, and the challenges in gaining school ownership and attracting sustained financial and volunteer support, the lack of which impedes their potential impact. We demonstrate how rescued schools embody alternative regional political visions within Puerto Rico and argue that government authorities can minimize the harm from school closures by forging new partnerships between community-based organizations, municipal governments, and other supportive actors to repurpose schools and reproduce their role as community anchor institutions. We study the non-turbulent pipe flow of a Newtonian fluid through a confined porous medium made of randomly arranged spherical particles in the situation where the ratio between the pipe diameter over the particle diameter (D/d) is less than 10. Using experiments and numerical simulations, we examine the relation between the flow rate and the mean pressure gradient as a function of the Reynolds number and particle size, and how it is affected by the presence of the walls. We investigate the intrinsic variability of the measurements in relation to the randomness of the particle arrangement and how such variability is linked to spatial fluctuations of pressure within the bed. We observe that as D/d decreases, the pressure gradient presents a stronger variability, particularly in relation to where measurements are taken within the pipe. The study also quantifies the difference between measuring the pressure drop at the wall versus averaging over the entire volume, finding a small difference of 2.5 % at most. We examine how the mean pressure gradient is affected by the lateral walls, finding that the pressure drop follows a consistent 1/Re scaling regardless of the confinement of the bed. Finally, we observe that the pressure gradient balances the force exerted on the solid spheres with a very weak contribution of the wall friction, showing that the role of confinement corresponds to a global effect on the bed arrangement which in turns affects the mean pressure gradient. As work and organizational realities become increasingly "post-bureaucratic," the conventional and stable bases of a person's authority—their position, their expertise, or the acquiescence of a subordinate—are eroding. This evolution calls us to revise our understanding of authority, and to consider more deeply how it is achieved in contexts that are both fluid and fragmented. Building on a six-month autoethnography of a consulting assignment, we show that authority is a practical, relational, and situated performance. It exists in a tension between two mirroring processes—activation and passivation—through which relations are either leveraged or downplayed to shape the situation and steer collective action. Our study also reveals that the performance of authority involves not just people, but also a broader range of actants, including artifacts and abstract entities. In line with current research on performativity in organizations, our findings contribute to the relational program on authority and the revelation of its sociomaterial dimension. Background: Childhood maltreatment can result in lifelong psychological and physical sequelae, including coronary artery disease (CAD). Mechanisms leading to increased risk of illness may involve emotional dysregulation and shortened leukocyte telomere length (LTL). Methods: To evaluate whether (1) childhood maltreatment is associated with shorter LTL among older adults with CAD or other chronic illnesses; (2) sex and/or CAD status influence these results; and (3) symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress moderate or mediate the association between childhood maltreatment and LTL, men and women (N = 1247; aged 65 ± 7.2 years) with and without CAD completed validated questionnaires on childhood maltreatment, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and perceived stress. LTL was measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Analyses included bivariate correlations, hierarchical regressions, and moderation/mediation analyses, controlling for sociodemographic and lifestyle variables. Results: Childhood maltreatment was associated with significantly shorter LTL (r = −0.059, p = 0.038, b = −0.016, p = 0.005). This relation was not moderated by depression, anxiety, nor perceived stress, though there was mitigated evidence for absence of a maltreatment-LTL relation in men with CAD. Stress perception (but not anxiety or depression) partially mediated the relation between childhood maltreatment and LTL [Indirect effect, b = −0.0041, s.e. = 0.002, 95% CI (−0.0085 to −0.0002)]. Conclusions: Childhood maltreatment was associated with accelerated biological aging independently of patient characteristics. Emotional dysregulation resulting in chronic stress may contribute to this process. Whether stress management or other interventions may help prevent or slow premature aging in those who have suffered maltreatment requires study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio occultation experiments are a sensing technique dedicated to the remote sounding of planetary atmospheres. The technique exploits the frequency shift of a radio signal due to refraction in a planetary atmosphere. The aim is to infer the physical properties of the neutral atmosphere (e.g., pressure and temperature) and ionosphere (e.g., the electron number density). For one‐way occultations, the data processing usually relies on Abel transform algorithms when the atmosphere is spherically symmetric. For two‐way occultations, such techniques require the introduction of approximate relationships for the bending experienced by the signal to be obtained. In this context, we introduce a new method to process two‐way occultations data by spherically symmetric atmospheres using a ray‐tracing approach. However, the numerical integration of the geometrical optics equation through the atmosphere requires a significant computational time due to initial pointing issues. For this reason, our novel algorithm exploits a closed‐form solution to the equations of geometrical optics (Bourgoin et al., A&A, 624, A41, 2019, https://doi.org/10.1051/0004-6361/201834962) applied to a spherically symmetric atmosphere. Within this approach, the bending is directly provided by the analytical solution and no numerical integration is required. In addition, we develop a procedure enabling us to disentangle the contributions from dispersive and neutral media in the frequency shift. This procedure is validated by comparing our vertical profiles to those obtained using Abel inversion or numerical ray‐tracing for Mars and Titan occultation experiments. We show that our algorithm provides similar results to purely numerical ray‐tracing algorithms while significantly decreasing the computational time. Plain Language Summary: Radio occultation experiments are a remote sensing technique used to sound the atmospheres of planets and moons to infer their physical characteristics. For this purpose, radio occultations take advantage of the frequency shift brought on by refraction when a radio signal passes through the atmospheric medium. A fundamental parameter required to derive atmospheric properties is the bending experienced by the radio ray while traversing the atmosphere. For one‐way experiments, the bending angle can be calculated using the frequency shift once the occultation geometry is known. When dealing with two‐way occultations, it cannot be directly inferred from the frequency shift. In these cases, numerical ray‐tracing algorithms are required, which, however, are computationally expensive. In this context, we develop a novel procedure based on a closed‐form solution to the equations of geometrical optics. This new method can produce results consistent with that obtained by fully numerical algorithms but require a lower computational burden. Modern advances in DNA sequencing hold the promise of facilitating descriptions of new organisms at ever finer precision but have come with challenges as the major Codes of bionomenclature contain poorly defined requirements for species and subspecies diagnoses (henceforth, species diagnoses), which is particularly problematic for DNA-based taxonomy. We, the commissioners of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, advocate a tightening of the definition of "species diagnosis" in future editions of Codes of bionomenclature, for example, through the introduction of requirements for specific information on the character states of differentiating traits in comparison with similar species. Such new provisions would enhance taxonomic standards and ensure that all diagnoses, including DNA-based ones, contain adequate taxonomic context. Our recommendations are intended to spur discussion among biologists, as broad community consensus is critical ahead of the implementation of new editions of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature and other Codes of bionomenclature. Humanoid robots have shown to provide interesting perspectives for autistic children. Yet, few studies have looked at educators' point of view on the use of such robots in educational settings. This paper presents a case study of the use of a humanoid robot, NAO, in a French preschool class dedicated to autistic children. Our work focuses on the perspectives of the adults working with these children. We interviewed the professional staff about changes in their teaching due to the presence of the robot, about the effects on the pupils' behaviour, and about the collaboration between the special needs teacher, the special needs support worker and the operational specialist from the digital education department of the district academic head office. Four themes were identified: joint reflection and collaboration when working with NAO, working with NAO, impact of NAO on pupils, impact of NAO on adults. The professionals underscored the necessity of adopting certain attitudes, in particular, the most neutral facial expression possible, so as not to disturb the children's learning process. They were under the impression that the robot had a beneficial effect on the pupils in terms of learning and social skills, and that it facilitated collaboration among them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
