Aim The aim was to investigate the clinical outcome of the wounds of people assisted in a stomal therapy nursing outpatient clinic in Brazil. Method A retrospective, descriptive, clinical audit of medical records. A total of 41 medical records of people with wounds that visited the stomal therapy nursing outpatient clinic were analysed. Results Regarding the wound care provided, 41 (100%) were for curative treatment. From the 41 participants with wounds, a total of 64 wounds were counted, an average of 1.5 (±1) per person; the period with the wound averaged 35.6 months. It was found that 27 (65.9%) participants had chronic wounds and 14 (34.1%) acute wounds. As for the aetiology of the wounds, 11 (26.8%) were trauma, 16 (39.0%) were diabetic neuropathies, two (4.9%) were due to vascular compromise, five (12.2%) were pressure injuries and seven (17.1%) were classified as others. Conclusion The findings of this investigation will help in the development of measures to address potential complications and prevention strategies related to the types of wounds that patients request assistance with from staff within the stomal therapy nursing outpatient clinic. The major aim of this randomized, placebo-controlled, triple-blind clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of cinnamon as an adjuvant treatment in reducing glycemic levels in people with type 2 diabetes, compared to a placebo. The study was conducted between August and December 2019, with 160 people with type 2 diabetes, in five Primary Health Units, in Parnaıba, Brazil. Inclusion criteria were: persons of both genders using oral antidiabetic agents, with glycated hemoglobin > 6.0%, and between 18 and 80 years of age. The primary outcome was change in glycated hemoglobin levels after 90 days of intervention. Other biomarkers evaluated were fasting blood glucose, insulin level, and HOMA-IR index. Participants were divided equally into two groups of 80 individuals each, and were given 3 g capsules of either cinnamon or placebo to be taken in combination with their usual oral antidiabetic agents. After 90 days, participants in the cinnamon group had statistically significant reductions of 0.2% of glycated hemoglobin and 0.55 mmol/L of fasting venous glucose, when compared with the placebo group. Purpose This paper aims to compare the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) on the basis of three criteria. The diagnostic criteria adopted were those of the International Diabetes Federation, the National Cholesterol Education Program – Adult Treatment Panel III and the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute..Design/methodology/approach A transversal study was undertaken with 691 university students in Fortaleza, Brazil, in 2011-2013.Findings The prevalence of MetS varied considerably according to the criteria used, it being 4.1 per cent for the IDF, 0.7 per cent for the NCEP ATPIII and 1.7 per cent for the revised NCEP ATPIII. The criteria of the IDF presented reasonable agreement in relation to the NCEP ATP III (0.294) and revised NCEP ATP III (0.334). Moderate agreement was found between the NCEP ATPIII/revised NCEP ATPIII.Originality/value There is a need for a universal diagnostic criterion for MetS to obtain uniform and more reliable data for the elaboration of public health policies. To validate two indirect methods to evaluate adherence to oral anti-diabetic therapy. Design. Convenience sample composed of 437 individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The Batalla test and the Measurement of Treatment Adherence were used to collect data in the participants' households. Pill count was considered the gold standard for assessing adherence to oral anti-diabetics. Data were collected in 2009. Findings. In relation to the gold standard, the Measurement of Treatment Adherence was more associated with non-adherence to oral anti-diabetics cases than the Batalla test ( p = 0·000). The Measurement of Treatment Adherence displayed stronger correlation with pill count ( p < 0·001) and was more exact than the Batalla test (0·646 > 0·561). Conclusion. The Measurement of Treatment Adherence was the best method to identify non-adherence to oral anti-diabetics of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Relevance to clinical practice. Identifying the best method to evaluate patients' adherence to oral anti-diabetic medication can facilitate the nurses' decision-making process in clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
