Professional accountability is considered important to the legitimacy and survival of a profession. Prior research has examined the role of top-down scrutiny by audiences, such as supervisors, regulators, and certification agencies, in improving professional accountability. But the advent of social media platforms has increasingly enabled the bottom-up scrutiny of professionals—especially professionals on the front line—by audiences such as customers and the public. In this research, I examine how and when bottom-up scrutiny through social media (hereafter, social media scrutiny) impacts the accountability of frontline professionals. Conducting an ethnography of 911 emergency management organizations, I find that social media scrutiny of 911 call-takers—the frontline professionals in this setting—can obscure rather than improve professional accountability. I elaborate on how, why, and under what conditions social media scrutiny pushes frontline professionals to deviate from their mandate, which, in turn, obscures their sense of professional accountability. These processes also generate spillover effects on the everyday work and mandate of downstream professionals (e.g., 911 dispatchers, police officers), producing a cascading set of unintended consequences that further obscures accountability for multiple actors across the professional ecosystem. Phenological shifts are expected to affect species interactions, in part by influencing which size classes, life stages or species occur simultaneously in a community. Yet, changes in phenology beyond shifts to the first, mean or median date of an ontogenetic event are underexplored in their importance to community dynamics. Using outdoor mesocosms, we experimentally mimicked increasing variability in breeding phenology of a top predatory salamander in pond food webs (Ambystoma annulatum) to assess its impacts on its own demographic traits and survival. We also tested whether variability in predator breeding would cascade to impact survival and diversity of lower trophic levels (intermediate salamander predators, anuran tadpoles, zooplankton and periphyton). We found that only variability in body size at metamorphosis of A. annulatum was impacted by phenological manipulations, with size variability being greater at higher levels of phenological variability. Because size at metamorphosis is often correlated with adult fitness, covarying variability in body size and phenology may lead to altered population dynamics. We also found that the density and size of A. annulatum were better predictors of overall survival and diversity of amphibian prey compared to phenological variability. We speculate that overwintering mortality of A. annulatum due to pond freezing modulated the impacts of phenological variability, such that changes in demographic traits and cascading effects throughout the food web were mollified. Most social problems are "wicked", meaning that they are highly complex, intractable, open-ended, and multi-dimensional. In wicked learning environments, information is ambiguous, feedback may be slow, or causes and effects are difficult to ascertain. Using the insights from the Bloomington school of political economy, this paper argues that a polycentric approach is the most effective way to address wicked social problems. Polycentric systems are characterized by multiple, overlapping decision-making centers that have varying degrees of independence and interdependence. When decision-makers in governments, markets, and civil society tackle complex social problems simultaneously, various forms of cooperation and contestation emerge. These interactions subsequently produce the relevant knowledge and incentives to address wicked social problems on a variety of margins. Centralized, one-size-fits-all approaches are less likely to succeed because they have weaker epistemic and incentive-related qualities. The Artificial-Intelligence-based Nonspherical Aerosol Optical Scheme (AI-NAOS) is a newly developed aerosol optical module that improves the representation of aerosol optical properties for radiative transfer simulations in atmospheric models. It incorporates the nonsphericity and inhomogeneity (NSIH) of internally mixed aerosol particles through a deep learning method. Specifically, the AI-NAOS considers black carbon (BC) to be fractal aggregates and models soil dust (SD) as super-spheroids, encapsulated partially or completely with hygroscopic aerosols such as sulfate, nitrate, and aerosol water. To obtain AI-NAOS, a database of the optical properties for the models was constructed using the invariant imbedding T-matrix method (IITM), and deep neural networks (DNN) were trained based on this database. In this study, the AI-NAOS was integrated into the mesoscale version 5.1 of Global/Regional Assimilation and Prediction System with Chinese Unified Atmospheric Chemistry Environment (GRAPES_Meso5.1/CUACE). Real-case simulations were conducted during a winter with high pollution, comparing BC aerosols evaluated using three schemes with spherical aerosol models (external-mixing, core-shell, and volume-mixing schemes) and the AI-NAOS scheme. The results showed that the NSIH effect led to a moderate estimation of absorbing aerosol optical depth (AAOD) and obvious changes in aerosol radiative effects, shortwave heating rates, temperature profiles, and boundary layer height. The AAOD values based on three spherical schemes were 70.4 %, 125.3 %, and 129.3 % over the Sichuan Basin, benchmarked to AI-NAOS results. Compared to the external-mixing scheme, the direct radiative effect (DRE) induced by the NSIH effect reached +1.6 W m−2 at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) and -2.9 W m−2 at the surface. The NSIH effect could enhance the shortwave heating rate, reaching 23 %. Thus, the warming effect at 700 hPa and the cooling effect on the ground were strengthened by 21 % and 13 %, reaching +0.04 and -0.10 K, which led to a change in the height of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) by -11 m. In addition, the precipitation was inhibited by the NSIH effect, causing a 15 % further decrease. Forest wildfires in interior Alaska represent an important black carbon (BC) source for the Arctic and sub-Arctic. However, BC observations in interior Alaska have not been sufficient to constrain the range of existing emissions. Here, we show our observations of BC mass concentrations and carbon monoxide (CO) mixing ratios in the Poker Flat Research Range (65.12° N, 147.43° W), located in central Alaska, from April 2016 to December 2020. The medians, 10th percentile ranges, and 90th percentile ranges of the hourly BC mass concentration and CO mixing ratio throughout the observation period were 13, 2.9, and 56 ng m−3 and 124.7, 98.7, and 148.3 ppb, respectively. Sporadically large peaks in the BC mass concentration and CO mixing ratio were observed at the same time, indicating influences from common sources. These BC peaks coincided with peaks at other comparative sites in Alaska, indicating large BC emissions in interior Alaska. Source estimation by FLEXPART-WRF (Flexible Particle Dispersion–Weather Research and Forecast) confirmed a contribution of boreal forest wildfires in Alaska and western Canada when high BC mass concentrations were observed. For these cases, we found a positive correlation (r=0.44) between the observed BC/ Δ CO ratio and fire radiative power (FRP) observed in Alaska and Canada. This finding implies that the variability of the BC and CO emission ratio is associated with the intensity and time progress of forest wildfires and suggests that the BC emission factor and/or inventory could be potentially improved by FRP. We recommend that FRP be integrated into future bottom-up emission inventories to achieve a better understanding of the dynamics of pollutants from frequently occurring forest wildfires under the rapidly changing climate in the Arctic. In this study, the potential changes in tropical cyclone (TC) lifetime in the western North Pacific basin are examined for different future climates. Using homogeneous 9-km-resolution dynamical downscaling with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model, we show that TC-averaged lifetime displays insignificant change under both low and high greenhouse gas concentration scenarios. However, more noticeable changes in the tails of TC lifetime statistics are captured in our downscaling simulations, with more frequent long-lived TCs (lifetime of 8–11 days) and less short-lived TCs (lifetime of 3–5 days). Unlike present-day simulations, it is found that the correlation between TC lifetime and the Niño index is relatively weak and insignificant in all future downscaling simulations, thus offering little explanation for these changes in TC lifetime statistics based on El Niño–Southern Oscillation. More detailed analyses of TC track distribution in the western North Pacific basin reveal, nevertheless, a noticeable shift of TC track patterns toward the end of the twenty-first century. Such a change in TC track climatology results in an overall longer duration of TCs over the open ocean, which is consistent across future scenarios and periods examined in this study. This shift in the TC track pattern is ultimately linked to changes in the western North Pacific subtropical high, which retreats to the south during July and to the east during August–September. The results obtained in this study provide new insights into how large-scale circulations can affect TC lifetime in the western North Pacific basin in warmer climates. Significance Statement: Using high-resolution dynamical downscaling with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model under low- and high-emission scenarios, this study shows that the basin-averaged tropical cyclone (TC) lifetime in the western North Pacific (WNP) basin has no noticeable change under both warmer climate scenarios, despite an overall increase in TC maximum intensity. However, the tails of the TC lifetime distribution display significant changes, with more long-lived (6–20 days) TCs but less short-lived (3–5 days) TCs in the future. These changes in TC lifetime statistics are caused by the shift of the North Pacific subtropical high, which alters large-scale steering flows and TC track patterns. These results help explain why previous studies on TC lifetime projections have been inconclusive in the WNP basin and provide new insights into how large-scale circulations can modulate TC lifetime in a warmer climate. The extent to which commercial sex, particularly sex work, should be regulated is an important and controversial policy conversation in the United States. Despite the salience of religion to informing attitudes about morality and bodily ethics, little is known about how some key dimensions of U.S. religion (e.g., religious fundamentalism and Christian nationalism) influence the public's moral acceptance of prostitution. We investigate this gap using nationally representative survey data (n = 1,219). Fundamentalist beliefs and Christian statism are both associated with lower moral acceptance of prostitution, adjusting for other religious and sociopolitical characteristics. Diamond is an exceptional material with great potential across various fields owing to its interesting properties1,2. However, despite extensive efforts over the past decades3, 4–5, producing large quantities of desired ultrathin diamond membranes for widespread use remains challenging. Here we demonstrate that edge-exposed exfoliation using sticky tape is a simple, scalable and reliable method for producing ultrathin and transferable polycrystalline diamond membranes. Our approach enables the mass production of large-area (2-inch wafer), ultrathin (sub-micrometre thickness), ultraflat (sub-nano surface roughness) and ultraflexible (360° bendable) diamond membranes. These high-quality membranes, which have a flat workable surface, support standard micromanufacturing techniques, and their ultraflexible nature allows for direct elastic strain engineering and deformation sensing applications, which is not possible with their bulky counterpart. Systematic experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the quality of the exfoliated membranes depends on the peeling angle and membrane thickness, for which largely intact diamond membranes can be robustly produced within an optimal operation window. This single-step method, which opens up new avenues for the mass production of high-figure-of-merit diamond membranes, is expected to accelerate the commercialization and arrival of the diamond era in electronics, photonics and other related fields.Edge-exposed exfoliation using sticky tape is shown to be a simple and reliable method for scaling up the production of ultrathin, ultraflat and ultraflexible polycrystalline diamond membranes for diverse electrical, optical, mechanical, thermal, acoustic and quantum applications. Modeling of the spatial low-cycle crack kinetics for refined service life and survivability of elements of aviation, rocket and space, nuclear, and other critical equipment is studied. The results of experimental studies and numerical calculations of the parameters of shape change are presented, taking into account the characteristics of the microrelief and the complex surface of low-cycle fracture of inclined surface semi-elliptical cracks. A functional relationship is shown between the mesostructural characteristics of low-cycle fragmentation of the surface of the cracks under study with parameters of nonlinear fracture mechanics such as the strain intensity coefficient and the specific elastoplastic work of fracture at a certain point of the defect contour. Shifts in phenology have been one of the most frequently documented effects of climate change across a wide variety of taxonomic groups. These shifts can alter both species and ecosystem level processes and, for species of conservation concern, may impact the effectiveness of ongoing management programs. Here, we used ten breeding seasons (2010–2020) of drift fence data to quantify the breeding phenology of the imperiled Reticulated Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma bishopi) at two breeding wetlands in Florida. We then used downscaled climate projections from three Global Circulation Models (GCMs; Hadley Centre Global Environment Model 2 Earth Systems, Hadley Centre Global Environment Model 2 Carbon Cycle, and the Community Climate System model version 4) each with two emission scenarios to forecast how flatwoods salamander breeding phenology may change from 2030–2099. We combined these forecasts with an existing hydrologic model that was built using the same climate data to examine how wetland hydrology and phenology may interact to impact salamander recruitment in future years. We found that large movements (≥ 5 individuals) of adult salamanders moving into breeding wetlands were tightly linked to precipitation events with minimum temperatures above freezing, while juvenile emigration was less strongly tied to precipitation and occurred on more days than adult immigration. Under all six GCM-emission scenario combinations, only one scenario suggested that there would be fewer immigration opportunities by the year 2099, and two scenarios (both high emission) indicated that the timing of immigration may shift to later in the fall breeding period. All projections predicted that only a few years will have an ideal intersection of phenology and hydrology for flatwoods salamander reproduction but that many years would have marginal conditions where recruitment may still be possible. Because the frequency of successful breeding years affects population viability in flatwoods salamanders, ongoing management programs must ensure that populations are reproducing frequently enough to remain viable. Overall, our results indicate that altered wetland hydrology (e.g., shorter hydroperiods during the breeding season) and other effects of climate change (e.g., sea level rise) are more likely to contribute to flatwoods salamander declines over the next several decades than phenological shifts. Aerosol hygroscopicity plays a vital role in aerosol radiative forcing. One key parameter describing hygroscopicity is the scattering enhancement factor, f (RH), defined as the ratio of the scattering coefficient at humidified relative humidity (RH) to its dry value. Here, we utilize the f (80 %) from ORACLES (ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS) 2016 and 2018 airborne measurements to investigate the hygroscopicity of aerosols, its vertical distribution, its relationship with chemical composition, and its sensitivity to organic aerosol (OA) hygroscopicity over the southeast Atlantic (SEA) Ocean during the biomass burning (BB) season. We found that aerosol hygroscopicity remains steady above 2 km, with a mean f (80 %) of 1.40 ± 0.17. Below 2 km, aerosol hygroscopicity increases with decreasing altitude, with a mean f (80 %) of 1.51 ± 0.22, consistent with higher values of BB aerosol hygroscopicity found in the literature. The hygroscopicity parameter of OA (κOA) is retrieved from the Mie model with a mean value of 0.11 ± 0.08, which is in the middle to upper range compared to the literature. Higher OA hygroscopicity is related to aerosols that are more aged, oxidized, and present at lower altitudes. The enhanced biomass burning aerosol (BBA) hygroscopicity at lower altitudes is mainly due to a lower OA fraction, increased sulfate fraction, and greater κOA at lower altitudes. We propose a parameterization that quantifies f (RH) with chemical composition and κOA based on Mie simulation of internally mixed OA–(NH4)2SO4–BC mixtures. The good agreement between the predictions and the ORACLES measurements implies that the aerosols in the SEA during the BB season can be largely represented by the OA–(NH4)2SO4–BC internal mixture with respect to the f (RH) prediction. The sensitivity of f (RH) to κOA indicates that applying a constant κOA is only suitable when the OA fraction is low and κOA shows limited variation. However, in situations deviating these two criteria, κOA can notably impact scattering coefficients and aerosol radiative effect; therefore, accounting for κOA variability is recommended. The facture and fatigue behaviour of welded joints made of A516 Gr 60 was analysed, bearing in mind their susceptibility to cracking, especially in the case of components which had been in service for a long time period. With respect to fracture, the fracture toughness was determined for all three zones of a welded joint, the base metal (BM), heat-affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal (WM), by applying a standard procedure to evaluate KIc via based on JIc values (ASTM E1820). With respect to fatigue, the fatigue crack growth rates were determined according to the Paris law by the standard procedure (ASTM E647) to evaluate the behaviour of different welded joint zones under amplitude loading. The results obtained for A516 Gr. 60 structural steel showed why it is widely used in the case of static loads, since the minimum value of fracture toughness (185 MPa√m) provides relatively large critical crack lengths, whereas its behaviour under amplitude loading indicated a need for further improvement in WM and HAZ, since the crack growth rate reached values as high as 4.58 × 10−4 mm/cycle. In addition, risk-based analysis was applied to assess the structural integrity of a pressure vessel, including comparison with the high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel NIOVAL 50, proving once again its superior behaviour under static loading. The recently proposed nonlocal macro–meso-scale consistent damage (NMMD) model has been applied successfully to various static and dynamic fracture problems. The characteristic length in the NMMD model, although proven to be necessary for the mesh insensitivity of a strain-softening regime, remains to be estimated indirectly with considerable arbitrariness. Such an issue also exists in other nonlocal models, e.g., peridynamics and phase field models. To overcome this obstacle, a series of dog-bone specimens composed of polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) material with and without circular defects are investigated in this paper. It is found that the NMMD model with the appropriate influence radius can correctly capture the experimentally observed size effect of the defect, which challenges the conventional local criteria without involving the characteristic length. In addition to being directly measurable and identifiable in experiments, based on the two-scale mechanism of the NMMD model, the characteristic length is also theoretically calibrated to be related to the ratio of the fracture toughness to the tensile strength of the material. Comparisons with the predictions of other modified nonlocalized criteria involving some characteristic length demonstrate the superior ability of the NMMD model to simulate brittle crack initiation and propagation from a non-singular boundary. The revalidation of short bending beams demonstrates that theoretical calibration is also suitable for problems of mixed-mode fractures with stress singularity. Although limited to brittle materials like PMMA, the current work could be generalized to the analysis of quasi-brittle or even ductile fractures in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From the late nineteenth century until the end of the twentieth century, the Canadian government collaborated with Christian churches to operate a network of boarding schools for Indigenous children to culturally and economically assimilate them. These children were taken from their families and placed into residential schools, where they were to be assimilated into the Eurocentric culture of the dominant society. Using a unique restricted-access database that asked Indigenous respondents about their family history with residential schools, in addition to questions on socioeconomic outcomes, I study the intergenerational effects of these schools. Despite previous research showing that residential schools increased human capital accumulation among attendees, I find that residential schools are associated with lower educational attainment among subsequent generations. I present evidence consistent with the notion that both cultural detachment and a breakdown in family relationships contributed to a reversal of the standard relationship between parents' and children's human capital. Encouragingly, I find suggestive evidence that greater access to cultural centers might buffer the harmful legacy of this historical trauma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study explores the coping strategies employed by people of color in response to racial discrimination and examines how cultural norms inform these strategies. Methodology: In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 34 Black and Asian Americans about their experiences with racial discrimination. Findings: Findings reveal that participants cope through humor, seeking social support on social media, from family and friends, and through avoidant coping strategies. Seeking social support from empathetic others, especially when they shared the same racial background as participants, contributes to feelings of comfort, sanity, and a sense of community. Group differences emerge in seeking family support with Black Americans more likely to seek parental support, likely because of racial socialization practices by their parents that prepared them for experiencing bias. Asian Americans preferred talking to siblings or cousins, citing a cultural gap between them and their parents. Research Implications: The study underscores the importance of considering the quality of social support, not just its use, as a buffer against harms related to discrimination. Social Implications: Racial discrimination is a routine experience for many people of color. This study demonstrates how the type of coping strategy matters for coping with the distress that often accompanies these experiences. Several factors contribute to sexual victimization, including cultural practices and gendered expectations. The current study considered one aspect of purity culture, adolescent virginity pacts, and their potential effect on sexual victimization in adolescence and adulthood. Using data from all five waves of the Add Health, longitudinal mixed gender and gender-specific analyses were conducted. The results indicated a gendered association between virginity pacts and sexual victimization. Virginity pacts were associated with lower odds of sexual victimization for women, while men who took a virginity pact had higher odds of sexual victimization compared to their counterparts who did not take a virginity pact. Theoretical explanations and practical implications are presented, highlighting the potential importance of gendered socialization in preventing gender-based violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The definition, delineation, and enforcement of property rights depend on how the wider political and economic environment (or institutional environment) was created and by whom. Organization and management theories implicitly assume this institutional environment is given, fixed, and exogenous to private firms. We challenge this assumption and consider the institutional environment as the result of political struggles between different actors (including private firms) who, if successful in this struggle, will define a particular property rights regime. We maintain that private firms can endogenously create the institutional environment by legitimizing an existing one that protects their property rights or by delegitimizing (and seeking the replacement of) another one that threatens their property rights. Our study combines insights from history, political economy, and organization and management theories and shows the benefits for organization and management scholars of studying long-term processes in light of classic works that sought to understand how political and economic orders were created. There are increasing calls to incorporate indigenous knowledge (IK) into climate adaptation planning (CAP) and related projects. However, given unique attributes of IK and the positionality of tribal communities to scientific research, several considerations are important to ensure CAP efforts with IK are ethical and effective. While such topics have been thoroughly explored conceptually, incorporation of IK into CAP is a nascent field only beginning to report findings and improve science production and delivery. Based on recent work with Ute Mountain Ute (UMU) resource managers and knowledge holders, we reflect on key considerations for incorporating IK into CAP: the importance of sustained and multi-level tribal engagement, operational approaches to IK incorporation, cross-cultural challenges with risk-based approaches, and how CAP can support existing tribal priorities. We hope exploring these considerations can help set appropriate expectations, promote ethical interactions, and increase the effectiveness of tribal CAP and related efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In brittle rocks, deformation is characterized by the initiation and propagation of cracks at both microscale and mesoscale levels. This study explores how rock texture influences the evolution of cracking networks and progressive rock damage results under uniaxial compression. 3D discrete analyses were employed to identify the critical stresses of three different rock types. Thin sections were prepared from uniaxially loaded core samples at these stresses and crack patterns were captured under a polarizing microscope. The fractal box dimension method was used to quantitatively analyze the crack patterns for each rock type at each stress level. The novelty of this research is revealing the relationship between the development of microcrack patterns and textural properties such as mineral orientation/distribution, interlocking, crystal cleavage/hardness, and the groundmass. Results show that the cracking tendency varies with rock type at each critical stress level. Specifically, diabase exhibited the highest crack intensity, attributed to the interlocking of hard plagioclase and pyroxene crystals. Furthermore, the cleavages in pyroxenes make diabase particularly susceptible to cracking, especially when they are oriented parallel or semi-parallel to the applied load. These findings highlight that rock texture is a crucial factor influencing microcrack development, which should be considered in rock engineering applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We conducted a 2-year study utilizing a network of fixed sites with sampling throughout an extended prescribed burning period to characterize the emissions and evolution of smoke from silvicultural prescribed burning at a military base in the southeastern USA. The measurement approach and an assessment of the instrument performance are described. Smoke sources, including those within and off the base, are identified, and plume ages are determined to quantify emissions and study the evolution of smoke PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters 2.5 µ m or smaller) mass, black carbon (BC), and brown carbon (BrC). Over the 2021 and 2022 prescribed burning seasons (nominally January to May), we identified 64 smoke events based on high levels of PM2.5 mass, BC, BrC, and carbon monoxide (CO), of which 61 were linked to a specific burning area. Smoke transport times were estimated in two ways: using the mean wind speed and the distance between the fire and the measurement site, and from Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) back-trajectories. PM2.5 emission ratios based on Δ PM2.5 mass / Δ CO for fresh smoke (age ≤ 1 h) ranged between 0.04 and 0.18 µ g m−3 ppb−1 with a mean of 0.117 µ g m−3 ppb−1 (median of 0.121 µ g m−3 ppb−1). Both the mean emission ratio and the variability were similar to findings from other prescribed fire studies but were lower than those from wildfires. The mean emission ratios of BC and BrC were 0.014 µ g m−3 ppb−1 and 0.442 Mm−1 ppb−1, respectively. Ozone enhancements (Δ O3) were always observed in plumes detected in the afternoon. Δ PM2.5 mass / Δ CO was observed to increase with plume age in all of the ozone-enhanced plumes, suggesting photochemical secondary aerosol formation. Background: Although motherhood plays a meaningful role in the formation of a woman's identity, most studies have focused on the process of identity transformation in the transition to motherhood among non-disabled women; less is known about this process among women with physical disabilities who become mothers. Objective: The present study aimed to understand and describe the subjective experiences of Israeli women with lifelong physical disabilities in their motherhood journey from the perspective of the intersection of their motherhood and disability identities, and from the disability studies approach. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 Israeli mothers with visible lifelong physical disabilities who live in the community and raise their children. Results: Three themes emerged from the interviews: (1) the decision to become a mother: Coping with the disability identity for the first time; (2) The FIRST 3 years: Depending on others as limiting their motherhood identity; (3) after age three: Balancing the motherhood and disability identities. Conclusion: The transition to motherhood led to identity transformation among women with physical disabilities. Becoming a mother increased the tension between dependence and independence in the context of disability, which also influenced the intersection of their motherhood and disability identities and their wellbeing. Staphylococcus aureus is considered among the most severe hazardous bacteria, especially, after the emergence of methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus, that associated with significant levels of pathogenicity along with mortality. Vancomycin is the treatment of choice for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections worldwide. Unfortunately, Vancomycin non-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus strains have also emerged, making controlling Staphylococcus aureus infections an international health challenge. The availability of accurate epidemiological information from all over the world aids in developing the best surveillance and control programs, limiting the spread and evolution of infections. In this paper, we review the mechanism of vancomycin non-susceptibility among Staphylococcus aureus and focus on the emergence, epidemiological characteristics, and the latest progress in Western Asia. Airborne measurements are pivotal for providing detailed, spatiotemporally resolved information about atmospheric parameters and aerosol and cloud properties, thereby enhancing our understanding of dynamic atmospheric processes. For 30 years, the US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science supported an instrumented Gulfstream 1 (G-1) aircraft for atmospheric field campaigns. Data from the final decade of G-1 operations were archived by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Data Center and made publicly available at no cost to all registered users. To ensure a consistent data format and to improve the accessibility of the ARM airborne data, an integrated dataset was recently developed covering the final 6 years of G-1 operations (2013 to 2018, 10.5439/1999133; Mei and Gaustad, 2024). The integrated dataset includes data collected from 236 flights (766.4 h), which covered the Arctic, the US Southern Great Plains (SGP), the US West Coast, the eastern North Atlantic (ENA), the Amazon Basin in Brazil, and the Sierras de Córdoba range in Argentina. These comprehensive data streams provide much-needed insight into spatiotemporal variability in the thermodynamic quantities and aerosol and cloud properties for addressing essential science questions in Earth system process studies. This paper describes the DOE ARM merged G-1 datasets, including information on the acquisition, data collection challenges and future potentials, and quality control processes. It further illustrates the usage of this merged dataset to evaluate the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) with the Earth System Model Aerosol–Cloud Diagnostics (ESMAC Diags) package. Due to an information gap between the central government and local governments, the principal-agent problem arises when power is devolved to the bureaucracy and local governments. We look at how China's decision to consolidate its network of air quality monitoring stations has affected the ability of local governments to influence air quality readings. After the switch to centralized monitoring, an increase in PM2.5 and PM10 levels was detected. No increase in aerosol optical depth (AOD) from satellites or emission from nearby polluting firms corroborates the hypothesis that this reported rise in PM2.5 and PM10 is not due to an increase in air pollution. These findings highlight the potential for data manipulation by local governments and the benefits of data centralization in reducing information asymmetry. According to our research results, we suggest that the government should establish a unified, centralized environmental quality monitoring system to reduce information asymmetry and data falsification. The coalition government in New Zealand intends to repeal the Resource Management Act 1991 and replace it with new legislation 'based on the enjoyment of private property rights, while ensuring good environmental outcomes'. This article considers the real possibility that the government is intending to place a theory of absolute private property rights at the centre of the new system. It argues that any policy that assumes private property rights should confer absolute rights on owners is a mischaracterisation of those rights and the law of private property. This article considers two interlocking philosophies that typified Ikeda Daisaku's life and work. The first is the philosophical wisdom of the Lotus Sūtra, particularly as expounded by the 13th century Buddhist reformer Nichiren. The second, inherent in the first, is the philosophical practice of the oneness of mentor and disciple, manifest most concretely and substantively for Ikeda in his relationship with and lifelong response to his mentor and Buddhist war resister, Toda Jōsei. The former philosophy shaped Ikeda's worldview and uncompromising focus on actualizing the peace, agency, happiness, and full becoming of all humanity. The latter animated his more than seven decades of activities toward these ends. The article concludes with implications for readers' daily life and professional spheres of influence. Neoliberal approaches to water governance, pioneered in Chile in the 1980s, are reappearing today on the centerstage of the water policy debate. While advocates claim that strong property rights, limits on government authority, and water markets can enhance environmental sustainability, efficiency, neutrality, and equity in the distribution of water rights, limited empirical evidence exists on whether neoliberal policies have delivered on these key promises. In this paper, we combine hydrological analysis with a nationwide data set on government water rights allocations between 1981 and 2021 to determine when and where water has been allocated beyond sustainable limits. We then integrate water market transaction and agricultural data to assess how allocations and scarcity conditions relate to spatial and temporal patterns in irrigation, crop distribution, and water market activity. Our results indicate that 30% of catchments are overallocated, and that continued government allocations of water rights during scarcity exacerbate already‐high inequalities in the distribution of water. We find no evidence that scarcity or water markets induced improvements in numerous efficiency metrics. Overall, our results support growing claims that the neoliberal water model fails to fulfill its key promises, notably to the detriment of nature and marginalized rural communities. Ship-based measurements of sea spray aerosol (SSA) gradient fluxes in the size range of 0.5–47 µm in diameter were conducted between 2009–2017 in both the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. Measured total SSA fluxes varied between 8.9 × 10 3 ± 6.8 × 10 5 m -2 s -1 for the Baltic Sea and 1.0 × 10 4 ± 10 5 m -2 s -1 for the Atlantic Ocean. The analysis uncovered a significant decrease (by a factor of 2.2 in the wind speed range of 10.5–14.5 m s -1) in SSA fluxes, with chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration higher than 3.5 mg m -3 in the Baltic Sea area. We found statistically significant correlations for both regions of interest between SSA fluxes and various environmental factors, including wind speed, wind acceleration, wave age, significant wave height, and wave Reynolds number. Our findings indicate that higher chl a concentrations are associated with reduced SSA fluxes at higher wind speeds in the Baltic Sea, while the influence of wave age showed higher aerosol emissions in the Baltic Sea for younger waves compared to the Atlantic Ocean. These insights underscore the complex interplay between biological activity and physical dynamics in regulating SSA emissions. Additionally, in both measurement regions, we observed weak correlations between SSA fluxes and air and water temperature and between SSA fluxes and atmospheric stability. Comparing the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic, we noted distinct emission behaviors, with higher emissions in the Baltic Sea at low wave age values compared to the Atlantic Ocean. Light‐absorbing carbonaceous aerosols that dominate atmospheric aerosol warming over India remain poorly characterized. Here, we delve into UV‐visible‐IR spectral aerosol absorption properties at nine PAN‐India COALESCE network sites (Venkataraman et al., 2020, https://doi.org/10.1175/bams‐d‐19‐0030.1). Absorption properties were estimated from aerosol‐laden polytetrafluoroethylene filters using a well‐constrained technique incorporating filter‐to‐particle correction factors. The measurements revealed spatiotemporal heterogeneity in spectral intrinsic and extrinsic absorption properties. Absorption analysis at near‐UV wavelengths from carbonaceous aerosols at these regional sites revealed large near‐ultraviolet brown carbon absorption contributions from 21% to 68%—emphasizing the need to include these particles in climate models. Further, satellite‐retrieved column‐integrated absorption was dominated by surface absorption, which opens possibilities of using satellite measurements to model surface‐layer optical properties (limited to specific sites) at a higher spatial resolution. Both the satellite‐modeled and direct in‐situ absorption measurements can aid in validating and constraining climate modeling efforts that suffer from absorption underestimations and high uncertainties in radiative forcing estimates. In developing countries and especially in India, one of the most polluted regions of the world, the extent to which particles can absorb solar energy and warm the atmosphere is not well understood. Here, for the first time, we measure particle absorption simultaneously at nine ground sites across India, in diverse geographical regions with different levels and types of particulate pollution. We find that organic carbon particles exert large absorption at near‐ultraviolet wavelengths, which contain significant solar energy. These light absorbing organic carbon particles, called brown carbon, are emitted in large quantities from biomass burning (e.g., burning crop residue and cooking on wood‐fired stoves). Comparing ground measurements of absorption with satellite‐retrieved measurements that are representative of the entire atmospheric column, we find that near‐surface atmospheric particles can exert significant warming. This study highlights the need to improve climate model simulations of particulate pollution's impact on the climate by incorporating spatiotemporal surface‐level absorption measurements, including absorption by brown carbon particles. The complex jagged trajectory of fractured surfaces of two pieces of forensic evidence is used to recognize a "match" by using comparative microscopy and tactile pattern analysis. The material intrinsic properties and microstructures, as well as the exposure history of external forces on a fragment of forensic evidence have the premise of uniqueness at a relevant microscopic length scale (about 2–3 grains for cleavage fracture), wherein the statistics of the fracture surface become non-self-affine. We utilize these unique features to quantitatively describe the microscopic aspects of fracture surfaces for forensic comparisons, employing spectral analysis of the topography mapped by three-dimensional microscopy. Multivariate statistical learning tools are used to classify articles and result in near-perfect identification of a "match" and "non-match" among candidate forensic specimens. The framework has the potential for forensic application across a broad range of fractured materials and toolmarks, of diverse texture and mechanical properties. Past research has revealed positive effects of stress communication by oneself and by the partner on relationship satisfaction. However, the mechanisms through which stress communication by oneself and by the partner influence relationship satisfaction have not been well studied. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of one's own and the partner's stress communication on relationship satisfaction and the mediating roles of one's own and the partner's communication satisfaction in these associations. A total of 227 unmarried heterosexual couples were recruited. An actor-partner interdependence mediation model was used to examine the hypothesized relationships. The results showed that the actor effects of stress communication on relationship satisfaction were mediated by the actor effects of communication satisfaction. Moreover, the indirect effect of male stress communication on female relationship satisfaction through female communication satisfaction was found to be significant. These findings provide insights into the mechanism through which stress communication influences relationship satisfaction. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. A theory model with two kinds of material, which are used to describe the axis stress strain relationship of the pipe segment and girth weld joints, is proposed for the pipeline axial deformation analysis, and a pipeline deformation diagram is composed for the axis deformation combination within the pipeline design limit. According to the pipeline deformation diagram, it is found that the strength of the pipe segment at the design limit σAb plays a key role in the strength matching discussion. The pipeline axis deformation could be classified as three categories based on the yield strength σYw, ultimate tensile strength σcritw of the weld joints and the pipe design strength σAb, which are σYw>σAb, σcritw≥ σAb≥σYw and σAb>σcritw . For σYw>σAb, the axis plastic deformation will distribute along the pipe segment and this is the ideal states for the pipeline. For σAb>σcritw, the girth weld may fail as stress rupture with tensile strain as low as 0.003. For σcritw≥ σAb≥ σYw, the weld joint may endure the plastic deformation, and the material properties of the weld joint may change, such as the toughness may decrease. Charpy-V impact test have shown that the toughness decreases 35 % for 2 % deformation for the weld joints welded by FCAW-S. In this scenario, the girth weld may break up as brittle fracture due to the toughness decrease. This model could be used to explain the girth weld failures, optimize the strength matching and control the risk, especially for the buried high strength pipeline of the high stress locations. A set of seismic analysis and design requirements are presented to improve seismic stability of steel two-tiered eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) with I-shaped link beams. The proposed requirements include strength, stability, and stiffness provisions for braces, intermediate beams, and columns. In particular, these requirements aim to make use of intermediate beams to limit out-of-plane deformation of diagonal braces, torsionally brace the link beam in the intermediate level using diagonal braces, utilize column stiffness and strength to brace the intermediate beam out-of-plane, estimate and account for in-plane bending demands of the columns due to uneven yielding of the links, and control inelastic link rotation. The proposed special analysis and design requirements for two-tiered steel EBFs prevent excessive out-of-plane deformation of the intermediate beam and columns, promote sequential yielding of link beams, and limit inelastic rotation of the link in the tier experiencing the largest lateral deformation. The proposed requirements are demonstrated for a case study two-tiered EBF. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses are performed to evaluate the seismic response of the case study frame against the frame designed without special design provisions and to validate the proposed requirements. In size-structured populations of predators, the threat of cannibalism can influence behavior of prey that are attempting to avoid predation by larger conspecifics, including reducing their foraging rates. Such behavioral responses subsequently release basal prey of both cannibal and non-cannibal predators from predation risk. However, whether the non-consumptive effects of cannibalism on conspecific predators varies with basal heterospecific prey density is relatively unexplored. I conducted a laboratory study in plastic containers to test whether cannibalism risk influenced the functional response of dragonflies while foraging on three different densities of larval salamander prey. Dragonfly predators foraged with a Type II functional response, and when exposed to cannibalism cues, per capita feeding rates were lower at high prey densities. Salamander prey mortality rates declined with increasing prey densities, but the presence of cannibalism risk did not influence this pattern. Overall, this study shows that functional response curves of predators can vary in response to whether cannibalism risk is present in their environment across a small range of prey densities. Incorporating synergistic effects of multiple processes, such as non-consumptive risk factors and prey density, may help further elucidate the processes that structure both predator and prey population dynamics.
