This study investigated the phytochemical characteristics, antibacterial activity, and synergistic potential of essential oils derived from Romanian lavender. Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis revealed that linalool is the main compound in all lavender essential oils, with concentrations ranging from 29.410% to 35.769%. Linalyl acetate was found in similar concentrations to linalool. Other significant compounds included 1,8-cineole (8.50%), lavandulyl acetate (5.38%), trans-β-ocimene (6.90%), and camphor (7.7%). A 1,1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test was used to assess antioxidant capacity, with substantial free-radical-scavenging activity shown in the IC50 values determined. The antibacterial efficacy of the oils was higher against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative bacteria, with variations in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), the extent of inhibition, and evolution patterns. The study also explored the oils' ability to enhance the efficacy of ampicillin, revealing synergistic interactions expressed as fractional inhibitory concentration indices. In silico protein–ligand docking studies used twenty-one compounds identified by GC-MS with bacterial protein targets, showing notable binding interactions with SasG (−6.3 kcal/mol to −4.6 kcal/mol) and KAS III (−6.2 kcal/mol to −4.9 kcal/mol). Overall, the results indicate that Romanian lavender essential oils possess potent antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and their synergistic interaction with ampicillin has potential for enhancing antibiotic therapies. This study explores the antibacterial efficacy and cytotoxicity of ciprofloxacin-functionalized bioceramic implants. We synthesized hydroxyapatite-ciprofloxacin (HACPXCS) composites and applied them to titanium substrates (Ti-HA-CPX), evaluating their performance in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922). Antibacterial activity was assessed using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method, while cytotoxicity was tested using mesenchymal stem cells. The results demonstrated that Ti-HA-CPX exhibited superior antibacterial activity, with inhibition zones of 33.5 mm (MIC 0.5 µg/mL) for Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and 27.5 mm (MIC 0.25 µg/mL) for Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922). However, Ti-HA-CPX showed moderate cytotoxicity (80% cell viability). HACPXCS composites, whether chemically synthesized or mechanically mixed (HACPXMM), also displayed significant antibacterial activity, but with cytotoxicity ranging from low to moderate levels. Molecular docking studies confirmed strong binding affinities between ciprofloxacin and bacterial proteins, correlating with enhanced antibacterial efficacy. These findings suggest that Ti-HA-CPX composites offer a promising approach for single-stage surgical interventions in treating chronic osteomyelitis and infected fractures, balancing antibacterial effectiveness with manageable cytotoxicity. The present communication reports on the effect of the sprayed solution volume variation (as a thickness variation element) on the detailed Raman spectroscopy for WO3 thin films with different thicknesses grown from precursor solutions with two different concentrations. Walls-like structured monoclinic WO3 thin films were obtained by the spray deposition method for further integration in gas sensors. A detailed analysis of the two series of samples shows that the increase in thickness strongly affects the films' morphology, while their crystalline structure is only slightly affected. The Raman analysis contributes to refining the structural feature clarifications. It was observed that, for 0.05 M precursor concentration series, thinner films (lower volume) show less intense peaks, indicating more defects and lower crystallinity, while thicker films (higher volume) exhibit sharper and more intense peaks, suggesting improved crystallinity and structural order. For higher precursor concentration 0.1 M series, films at higher precursor concentrations show overall more intense and sharper peaks across all thicknesses, indicating higher crystallinity and fewer defects. Differences in peak intensity and presence reflect variations in film morphology and structural properties due to increased precursor concentration. Further studies are ongoing. Recently, due to the high demand for dental implants, the use of dental implant stock abutments has increased significantly, especially dental custom CAD/CAM implant abutments milled by dental technicians in their laboratories. The purpose of this study is to analyze the surface quality of the emergence profile of dental custom CAD/CAM implant abutments made by a non-industrial milling machine, compared to original and compatible dental implant stock abutments made by industrial machines. Thirty dental implant abutments were divided into six study lots. Lot 1 (control group): original dental implant stock abutments—industrial machined; lot 2 (study group): compatible dental implant stock abutments—industrial machined; lots 3, 4, 5, and 6 (study groups): compatible custom CAD/CAM dental implant abutments—non-industrial milled with hyperDENT CAM software and Paragon Tools. The Nikon SMZ745T stereomicroscope was used to analyze the emergence profile surface of each dental implant abutment. The structure of the analyzed surfaces did not show significant differences between original and compatible abutments that were industrially machined. As for the customized dental implant abutments, the greatest similarity with the original was obtained for lot 6, and a significant statistical difference was obtained for lot 4. Stepover and Feed Rate parameters of the milling process influenced the surface roughness of the emergence profile for the customized dental implant abutments. The study evaluates the osteointegration of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and hydroxyapatite-titanium (HApTi) biocomposites implanted in the femurs of rabbits. The biocomposites were fabricated using powder metallurgy and subjected to a two-step sintering process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to analyze the morphology, while mesenchymal stem cells were cultured to assess cytotoxicity and proliferation. In vivo experiments involved the implantation of HAp in the left femur and HApTi in the right femur of twenty New Zealand white rabbits. Computed tomography (CT) scans, histological, immunohistochemical, and histomorphometric analyses were performed to assess bone density and osteoblast activity. Results demonstrated that HApTi implants showed superior osteointegration, with higher peri-implant bone density and increased osteoblast count compared to HAp implants. In Europe, it is estimated that 14% of existing buildings were built before 1919, whereas 26% were built before 1945. In Romania, about 31% of the buildings date from before 1961, contributing to the current stock of old buildings with historic and architectural value in the country. This paper illustrates the current state of buildings with historic and architectural value in Romania, alongside a case study of a representative administrative building in Câmpulung, Romania. The analysis of the Town Hall building in Câmpulung, Romania, demonstrates that potential energy savings of up to 47.53% can be achieved by implementing interventions such as upgrading windows, insulating the attic, and installing photovoltaic panels. The highest energy reduction is obtained by replacing the window glass with a value of 18.16% with attic insulation with a value of 16.1%. This paper also presents indoor measurements of temperature and humidity in different offices positioned in the north and the south. The study conducted on the south façade office revealed consistent temperatures ranging from 21.7 °C to 24.4 °C, with an average of 23.31 °C. However, the humidity levels fluctuated considerably, ranging from 17.1% to 39.1%, with an average of 26.89%. The sun-exposed section of the building saw relatively stable temperature conditions, but the varying humidity levels could have a detrimental impact on the quality of the indoor atmosphere and potentially decrease the effectiveness of the workforce. By contrast, the north façade office exhibited lower and more fluctuating temperatures, ranging from 19.8 °C to 23.6 °C, with an average of 21.74 °C. Additionally, it had higher and more stable humidity levels, ranging between 19.5% and 41.7%, with an average of 29.83%. A thermographic analysis was performed on the north façade of the Câmpulung Town Hall, utilizing thermal imaging technology to detect areas of heat loss, and thus identifying the energy inefficiency problems of the building's exterior. The investigation found notable variations in temperature, especially around the windows, where temperatures could be as high as 14.1 °C, highlighting the insufficiency of the building's antiquated timber-framed windows in preventing energy loss. Tree species with high ecological plasticity are recommended for use in urban green infrastructures. This study explores the genetic diversity of Tilia cordata, Tilia platyphyllos, and Tilia argentea, highlighting their contribution to urban landscapes. In this respect, the genetic variability of individuals from four populations of the Tilia genus has been analyzed using Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) molecular markers, and some of their phenotypic characters were naked-eyed observed or determined by dendrometric measurements. Significant variability between the populations studied was determined. Cluster analysis identified two main groups: Tilia cordata I and Tilia cordata II populations formed the first cluster, and Tilia platyphyllos and Tilia argentea populations formed the second cluster. The results of the phenotypic analysis confirmed the genetic results separating the two populations of Tilia cordata from the populations of Tilia platyphyllos and Tilia argentea in relation to their visible morphological characters. Results obtained from dendrometric measurements analysis represent the foundation for further investigations on urban ecology. An essential potential practical use of the results: the establishment of more efficient ISSR primers to identify the Tilia species analyzed: UBC864, A12, UBC840, and A7 for Tilia cordata, A13 for Tilia platyphyllos and A7 for Tilia argentea has been demonstrated. Background: The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of Klebsiella pneumoniae recorded a steep upward trend over the last two decades, among which carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is one of the most concerning strains considering the development and spread of AMR. The aim of this study was to analyze the evolution of AMR for Klebsiella pneumoniae and to describe the risk factors of AMR for Klebsiella pneumoniae, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on Klebsiella pneumoniae non-duplicative isolates collected from patients admitted to a tertiary hospital in Bucharest, Romania, from January 2019 to December 2021. We evaluated AMR changes by comparing resistance between 2019 and the mean of 2020–2021. Results: The rates of AMR increased for third-generation cephalosporins, carbapenems, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, and colistin and decreased for trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX), 45.7% in 2019 vs. 28.3% in 2021. A longer length of hospital stay (ꭓ2 = 49.68, p < 0.01); recent antibiotic consumption, RR = 1.38, 95% CI [1.21, 1.57]; and recent contact with hospital settings, RR = 1.54, 95% CI [1.32, 1.8] were risk factors for multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae. Conclusions: The AMR of Klebsiella pneumoniae increased during 2020–2021 for most of the potential active antibiotics; only TMP/SMX resistance decreased, and it may represent a treatment option for CRKP or MDR Klebsiella pneumoniae infections. Decreasing the excessive use of antibiotics and the implementation of prevention and control measures in healthcare settings are mandatory for avoiding further increases in the AMR rate of Klebsiella pneumoniae. This article discusses a study that examined the relationship between tooth loss and cardiovascular diseases. Background: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), the advanced stage of peripheral arterial disease, is diagnosed in the presence of ischemic rest pain, non-healing ulcers, or gangrene. Several studies have demonstrated that inflammation and endothelial dysfunction are some of the main substrates of CLTI. Methods: A narrative review was conducted and reported according to PRISMA guidelines. Three databases were searched—Web of Science, Medline, and EMBASE—for the studies assessing CLTI and the biological markers related to it. Results: We included 22 studies, and all the markers identified (C-reactive protein, D-dimers, fibrinogen, cytokines, IL-6, TNF-α, ICAM-1 (Intracellular Adhesion Molecule-1), VCAM-1 (Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1), neutrophile-to-lymphocytes ratio (NLR), IL-8, Pentraxin-3, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), calprotectin, E-selectin, P-selectin, neopterin, High-Mobility Group Box-1 protein (HGMB-1), Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and Sortilin) were positively associated with advanced CLTI, with major limb or major cardiovascular events in these patients. Conclusions: All the studied markers had increased values in patients with CLTI, especially when associated with diabetes mellitus, proving a very important association between diabetes and major limb or cardiovascular events in these patients. There is a need for more studies to validate these markers in terms of diagnosis or prognosis in CLTI patients and in trying to find new medical strategies that target inflammation or endothelial dysfunction in these patients. Introduction. Dental fatigue fractures are the result of occlusal overloads occurring because of increased intensity of occlusal forces or decreased resistance of dental hard tissues to habitual occlusal forces. In the COVID-19 pandemic, occlusal stress has increased significantly, and so has the number of dental fractures. The study has the aim to determine if the number of cases of dental fatigue fractures during the pandemic crisis was higher than in the immediately preceding period. Methodology. The retrospective study was carried out in a private dental clinic, selecting from the case series presented during March 2019-March 2021 the cases of dental fatigue fractures presented for diagnosis and treatment. The data collected from the patients included the reason for the presentation, the dental and medical history, and results from dental examination and radiological data. The statistical analysis was carried out with Microsoft Excel and SPSS software. Results. The study included 644 patients, 430 women and 214 men, with ages between 25 and 85 years (61±7.4 years). From a total of 2581 visits, 1534 visits were made to 383 patients between March 2019 and March 2020, and 1047 visits were made to 261 patients between March 2020 and March 2021, the number of visits decreasing by 31.75% during the pandemic. During the pandemic, the number of fractured teeth tripled, increasing from 0.53% to 1.53% (p=0.009). The most affected teeth were the maxillary premolars and the permanent first molar, both mandibular and maxillary. In most cases, the indication for treatment was extraction. Conclusions. The Sars-Cov2 virus pandemic crisis has significantly increased the number of teeth with dental fatigue fractures presented to the dental office for diagnosis and treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The monoclinic polymorph of Co3P2O8 (space group P21/c), isomorphic to farringtonite (Mg3P2O8) type orthophosphates, was studied up to 21 GPa using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and density-functional theory simulations to investigate the influence of pressure in the crystal structure. This study revealed a pressure induced structural phase transition for monoclinic cobalt phosphate, Co3P2O8, and the details of crystal structure of the new high-pressure polymorph were delineated. The evolution of XRD pattern with pressure indicate that the onset of a phase transition occurs around 2.90(5) GPa, and the low- and high- pressure phases coexist up to 10.3(1) GPa. The high-pressure phase also has a mono- clinic lattice (space group P21/c), and a discontinuous change of unit-cell volume of about 6.5% occurs at the transition. A reorganization of atomic positions with a change in the cobalt coordination sphere occurs in the phase transition. Notably, the high-pressure polymorph has a defect-olivine-type structure like chopinite-type orthophosphates. Using a third-order Birch--Murnaghan equation of state, the bulk moduli of the low pressure (LP) phase (75(2) GPa) and high-pressure (HP) phase (92(2) GPa) were deter- mined. For the low-pressure polymorph, the principal axes of compression and their compressibility were also determined. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a leading cause of non-traumatic disability in young adults. The highly dynamic nature of MS lesions has made them difficult to study using traditional histopathology due to the specificity of current stains. This requires numerous stains to track and study demyelinating activity in MS. Thus, we utilized Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to generate holistic biomolecular profiles of demyelinating activities in MS brain tissue. Multivariate analysis can differentiate MS tissue from controls. Analysis of the absorbance spectra shows profound reductions of lipids, proteins, and phosphate in white matter lesions. Changes in unsaturated lipids and lipid chain length indicate oxidative damage in MS brain tissue. Altered lipid and protein structures suggest changes in MS membrane structure and organization. Unique carbohydrate signatures are seen in MS tissue compared to controls, indicating altered metabolic activities. Cortical lesions had increased olefinic lipid content and abnormal membrane structure in normal appearing MS cortex compared to controls. Our results suggest that FTIR spectroscopy can further our understanding of lesion evolution and disease mechanisms in MS paving the way towards improved diagnosis, prognosis, and development of novel therapeutics. Worldwide, breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancers in women and is responsible for the highest number of cancer-related deaths among women, with a special clinical behavior and therapy response. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is seen as a highly invasive BC, characterized by a short survival, higher mortality, recurrence, and metastasis when it is compared to the other BC subtypes. The molecular subtyping of TNBC based on mRNA expression levels does not accurately reflect protein expression levels, which impacts targeted therapy effectiveness and prognostic predictions. Most TNBC cases exhibit a high frequency of homologous recombination (HR) DNA repair deficiency (HRD) signatures and are associated with a complex genomic profile. Biomarker research in TNBC includes investigating genetic mutations, gene expression patterns, immune system-related markers, and other factors that can provide valuable information for diagnosis, treatment selection, and patient outcomes. Additionally, these biomarkers are often crucial in the development of personalized and precision medicine approaches, where treatments are customized to each patient's unique characteristics. This ongoing research is essential for improving the management and outcomes of TNBC, which is a challenging and heterogeneous form of breast cancer. Simple Summary: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women globally, with over 2.26 million new cases in women in 2020. Male breast cancer, while rare (less than 1% of cases), is treated similarly to female breast cancer despite some clinical differences. Advances in treatment, such as using genomic and immunohistochemical markers, have significantly improved survival rates for women. Men with breast cancer are often older at diagnosis, and their prognosis may differ due to age and other factors. The survival analysis conducted on 2162 patients (19 males and 2143 females) suggests that male breast cancer may have a poorer prognosis compared to female breast cancer. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers and the leading cause of cancer death in women. Less than 1% of breast cancer cases are male breast cancers. Although there has been significant progress made in the management of breast cancer, due to its rarity among men, the question of whether men and women with breast cancer have the same treatment response and survival rate still needs to be answered. The primary goal of this study is to compare survival outcomes between male and female breast cancer patients. Material and Method: This cohort study represents a retrospective and anonymized data analysis of 2162 breast cancer cases (19 males and 2143 females), registered over a period of 12 years, from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2021, in the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Diakoneo Diak Klinikum Schwäbisch Hall, Germany. Results: According to the Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, the estimated overall 3-year survival rate was 91.1% for women and 88.9% for men. The log-rank test of equality of survival distributions indicated a statistically significant difference in survival times between the two groups (p = 0.009). In the subsequent age-matched Kaplan–Meier analysis, the p-value was below the significance threshold (p = 0.068). In this study, crack-free TiC/Ti composites with TiC content ranging from 0 to 15 wt.% were successfully fabricated using Direct Energy Deposition with a dual-feeder system that concomitantly delivered different amounts of both constituents into a high-power laser beam. The samples were investigated to evaluate the morphologies and distribution behavior of TiC. The microhardness values of the samples obtained under optimal processing conditions increased from 192 ± 5.3 HV0.2 (pure Ti) to 300 ± 14.2 HV0.2 (Ti + wt.% 15 TiC). Also, TiC has a significant impact on the Ti matrix, increasing the strength of TMCs up to 725 ± 5.4 MPa, while the elongation drastically decreased to 0.62 ± 0.04%. The wear rate is not proportionally affected by the rise content of TiC reinforcement; the hypoeutectic region of TMCs exhibited a wear rate of 2.45 mm3/N·m (Ti + wt.% 3 TiC) and a friction coefficient of 0.48 compared to the ones from the hypereutectic region, which measured a wear rate of 3.02 mm3/N·m (Ti + wt.% 15 TiC) and a friction coefficient of 0.63. The improved values of mechanical properties in the case of TMCs as compared to pure Ti are provided due to the solid solution strengthening of carbon and the fine grain strengthening. This study addresses the role of Romanian academic and research librarians in optimizing access to information in the digital age, in relation to quality management and knowledge management. The novelty of this study consists in its parallel analysis of both librarians' and users' perspectives on librarians' roles and abilities in optimizing access to information. The results obtained by means of interpretative qualitative analysis combined with descriptive quantitative analysis revealed that Romanian librarians succeed in providing good information services, however, the demands and expectations of users highlight a continuous need for integration of librarians into the mission of the universities and research institutes, and knowledge sharing and a series of innovations are recommended. The results obtained by interpretative analysis, combined with quantitative analysis for corroboration, point to four interrelated themes regarding the Romanian librarians' roles and abilities in optimizing access to information. The first principal idea is that librarians' abilities and competencies are key assets for Romanian academic and special research libraries. The second is that Romanian librarians need training in knowledge management and quality management. The third is that embedded librarianship and knowledge sharing could add quality to libraries services. Purpose: The chapter analyses the diversity of the European Union (EU) member states in terms of the transition to a sustainable, green, and just economy. Need for the study: Sustainable development is an important concern that the EU approaches by aiming to transition to a greener economy, fairly and inclusively. Moreover, the actual context, post-pandemic period and ongoing war at the EU border, makes the social and economic development of the EU countries matter even more in the light of this just transition. Methodology: The authors relied on a multidimensional approach, using principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset. The cluster analysis allowed us to group the countries in such a way that made it possible to identify the best and worst performers, as well as certain patterns that can be the basis for the formulation of good practices and transferable to the states that need more support in the transition to a green economy. Findings: The results indicated that EU member states can be grouped into five clusters, each needing specific policies to ensure sustainable and inclusive development. Denmark, Finland, and Sweden turned out the best performers, while Estonia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Romania proved to have the most unfavourable situation. Practical implications: The findings provide relevant policy implication insights for policy decision-makers in the field of green economy, economic development, and social policies, with directions for future research. Purpose: To evaluate the stone clearance rate and limitations of a novel integrated suction capability within a single-use flexible ureteroscope according to stone particle size. Methods: Varying sized stone particles were created using a stone phantom (Begostone Plus, Bego ©, Lincoln, RI, USA). Particle size ranged as follows: 63–125 µm, 125–250 µm, 250–500 µm, 500 µm- 1 mm and 1–2 mm. These were mixed with Normal saline (0.9%) to mimic in vivo conditions. The suction enabled single-use flexible ureteroscope (Pusen, Zhuhai, China) was used to aspirate stone fragments in three trials. Firstly, aspiration of 5 g of each dust range was attempted. Secondly, a direct comparison of the integrated suction to a manual syringe technique was applied to 1 g of each size range. Finally, aspiration was applied to 5 g of a heterogenous 1:1:1:1:1 mixture. Endoscopic clearance rate (g/min) and number of blockages were recorded. Each challenge was repeated three times. Results: The integrated suction cleared 100% of dust < 250 µm. Endoscopic clearance rates were significantly faster than manual aspiration (3.01 g/min versus 0.41 g/min) for dust between 125 and 250 µm (p = 0.008). Complete endoscopic clearance by 180 s (without encountering test limiting blockages) was unsuccessful for particles > 250 µm. Clearance rates were greatly limited by stone particle size heterogeneity above 250 µm, to 0.09 g/min. Conclusion: This technology works better in vitro than previously DISS evaluated methods when challenged by stone dust < 250 µm. Purpose: The objective of the study is to determine if there was a difference in medical complications and in-hospital mortality among the patients who underwent THA for femoral neck fracture relative to same procedure for elective patients with coxarthrosis. Methods: We compared characteristics and short-term outcomes during the rehabilitative postsurgical period. We included all patients older than 45 years who underwent THA for primary/secondary hip arthritis and displaced femoral neck fractures type Garden III and IV. Clinical examination, functional outcome and radiographic evaluation were performed during follow-up. Patients were evaluated at the following time points: preoperatively, postoperatively at three days, six weeks, 12 weeks and one year and we registered Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) pain score, Harris Hip Score (HHS), the Western Ontario McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), internal and external rotation of the hip and operated limb length compared with the opposite. Results: There is no significant statistically differences between the two groups regarding the preoperative comorbidities. The frequencies of patients experiencing in-hospital and 30-day postoperative complications were generally low and same in groups we studied. The mean quantity of surgical blood loos during the operation was significantly higher in the hip fracture group compared with elective patient group with OA (340.09 ± 86.03 vs 309.43 ± 102.52). With respect to postoperative recovery the patients with THA after FNF were mobilized by active walking a little bit faster as the patient with OA (2.77 ± 1.18 days vs 3.1 ± 1.14 days). The average inpatient hospital length of stay after THA for OA was 11.07 days compared to 13.41 days following a THA for FNF. Conclusion: Our study showed that THA for treatment of an acute fracture of the femoral neck in an elderly patient can provide results comparable to those of patients who received THA for OA and we found that the results are similar. The aim of this paper is to generalize the results on expansive mappings of Yesilkaya and Aydin from Fixed Point Results of Expansive Mappings in Metric Spaces [see Yesilkaya, S. S.; Aydin, C. Background/Objectives: The aim of our study is to compare the perioperative and functional outcomes of a multimodal approach combining thulium laser vaporization, bipolar TURP, and bipolar plasma vaporization (TLP) with bipolar TURP in a matched-pair analysis. Methods: A nonrandomized, observational, retrospective, and matched-pair analysis was performed on two homogeneous groups of 60 patients who underwent TLP versus bipolar TURP at our center between March 2018 and December 2021. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score and prostate volume (PV) were the main parameters used to match patients between the two groups. Follow-up was evaluated at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. Results: There was a shorter operative time in favor of TLP (42 versus 45 min, p = 0.402). Median hemoglobin drop (−0.3 versus −0.6, p < 0.001) and median sodium drop (−0.3 versus −0.7, p < 0.001) after surgery were statistically significantly lower in TLP compared to bipolar TURP. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and Quality of Life (QoL) scores were significantly lower, and the maximum urinary flow rate was higher in the TLP group. The median PSA decrease 2 years after surgery was 73.92% in the TLP group versus 76.17% in the bipolar TURP group (p = 0.578). The complication rate was lower in the TLP group (20% versus 21.67%, p = 1). Featured Application: Afforestation of mixed spruce–pine stands more resistant to windfall at the upper altitudinal limit of Romanian forests. Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra) is a feasible solution for increasing the resistance of future mixed spruce–pine stands to windfall at the upper altitudinal limit of Romanian forests. This study aims to analyze the adaptability of ten full-sib families in two different environmental conditions and their evolution in time for predicting forward selection. At a seedling age of 33, evaluations were carried out for survival rate (Sr), growth (diameter at breast height—Dbh, and trees' height), and branch traits, as well as for stem straightness. The high level of genetic variability, inheritance rate, and trait–trait correlations, registered in both trials, ensure the success of the breeding program. The Swiss stone pine shows a very good adaptation on high-sloping lands from the upper altitudinal limit of Romania's forests, with the cross-pollinated (CP) families registering a 28.5% better survival in the Rodna trial (34° slope) compared to the Păltiniș experiment (7° slope). The consanguineous families registered only an 11% Sr in Păltiniș, while in the Rodna trial, the Sr was four times higher (in both trials, consanguineous trees were dominated). The juvenile–adult correlations of growth traits were significant, indicating that early selection could be efficient. Simple Summary: This review paper deals with incidentally found focal liver lesions (IFLLs) in otherwise healthy subjects, which is a frequent occurrence in daily practice. The clinical presentation and the imaging aspects play an important role in deciding whether and what further evaluation is required. In low-risk patients (i.e., those without a history of malignant or chronic liver disease or related symptoms, younger than 40 years old), more than 95% of IFLLs are benign. Shear Wave liver Elastography of the surrounding liver parenchyma should be considered to exclude liver cirrhosis and for further risk stratification. If an IFLL in a low-risk patient has a typical appearance on a B-mode ultrasound of a benign lesion, no further imaging is needed. Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) should be considered as the first-line contrast imaging modality to differentiate benign from malignant IFLLs. In high-risk patients (i.e., with chronic liver disease or an oncological history), each IFLL should initially be considered as potentially malignant, and every effort should be made to confirm or exclude malignancy. This research aims to identify the prevalence of failure for Birmingham Hip Prosthesis (BHR) in total hip arthroplasty and to analyze its reasons from biomaterials and biofunctional perspectives. We present our current analysis and tests on a series of different BHR-retrieved prostheses after premature failure. Relevant clinical data, such as X-ray investigations and intraoperative images for clinical case studies, were analyzed to better understand all factors involved in BHR prosthesis failure. A detailed analysis of the failures highlighted uneven cement distribution, overloading in certain areas, and void formation in the material. A closer investigation using microscopical techniques revealed the presence of a crack originating from the gap between the cement mantle and human bone. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy analyses were conducted as part of the investigation to examine bone cement morphology in detail and better understand the interactions at the interfaces between implant, cement, and bone. In conclusion, this research emphasizes the importance of surgical technique planning and the cementation procedure in the success rate of BHR prostheses. It also underscores the need to carefully evaluate patient characteristics and bone quality to minimize the risk of BHR prosthesis failure. (1) Background: Food waste (FW) in Romania is 70 Kg/capita/year, while 70% of food waste comes from public catering, retail services, and households (over 50%–47 million tons). The present study investigates the socio-demographic factors, behaviors, motivations, and attitudes related to food waste management in Romanian households. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted using an online questionnaire via the Google Forms platform from 15 April 2023 to 15 May 2023. The questionnaire was designed to assess various aspects, such as some socio-demographic information (age, sex, occupation, area of residence, study level, household members number, children <18 years of age); the personal involvement and frequency of food purchases and homemade food cooking; the main sources that generate food waste; the motivation and frequency with which food waste occurs; the level of awareness regarding the impact of food waste; the respondents' intentions regarding sustainable behaviors and practices for food management; the level of information and familiarity of the respondents with the notions of validity and how these may influence their food consumption decisions. (3) Results: The results show that FW incidence is occasionally (42%), very rarely (43.33%), frequently (15%), and no food waste was reported by 2.66% of respondents. The 35–44 age category records the highest FW frequency, followed by 18–24. The most wasted are homemade food (29.67%), bread and bakery products (27.00%), and fruits and vegetables (14.33%). High involvement in purchasing and buying food following a previously established list reduces FW frequency. The same is valid for high daily involvement in food and homemade cooking. High interest in the FW problem and its perception as a waste of money leads to diminishing it, while guilty feelings increase the FW level (37.50% to 73.33%). (4) Conclusions: The present study shows that household food waste management is a multifactorial process that involves numerous socio-demographic, behavioral, and emotional aspects. The present study was focused on the preparation, characterization and application onto cotton fabrics of different topical oil-in-water emulsions based on chitosan, eugenol and copaiba essential oil for potential topical applications. Different amounts of copaiba essential oil (oil phases) and eugenol were used, while the water phase consisted of hamamelis water. The designed formulations were evaluated via optical microscopy and rheological parameters assessment. The textile materials treated with the developed emulsions were analyzed in terms of antibacterial efficiency and in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility. The rheological measurements have shown that the emulsions' stability was dependent on their viscosity and structure of the colloidal systems. The emulsions remained stable at temperatures equal to or below 35 °C, but an increase in temperature led to droplet flocculation and creaming. The emulsion-treated textiles exhibited antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and in vivo biocompatibility on the skin of guinea pigs without sensitization effects. Our study revealed that eugenol and copaiba essential oil-based emulsions loaded on cotton textile materials could be promising candidates for developing skin-friendly textiles designed for different topical applications. This paper examined the mechanical properties of wrist–hand orthoses made from polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG), produced through material extrusion with infill densities of 55% and 80%. These orthoses, commonly prescribed for wrist injuries, were 3D-printed flat and subsequently thermoformed to fit the user's hand. Experimental and numerical analyses assessed their mechanical resistance to flexion after typical wear conditions, including moisture and long-term aging, as well as their moldability. Digital Imaging Correlation investigations were performed on PLA and PETG specimens for determining the characteristics required for running numerical analysis of the mechanical behavior of the orthoses. The results indicated that even the orthoses with the lower infill density maintained suitable rigidity for wrist immobilization, despite a decrease in their mechanical properties after over one year of shelf life. PLA orthoses with 55% infill density failed at a mean load of 336 N (before aging) and 215 N (after aging), while PETG orthoses did not break during tests. Interestingly, PLA and PETG orthoses with 55% infill density were less influenced by aging compared to their 80% density counterparts. Additionally, moisture and aging affected the PLA orthoses more, with thermoforming, ongoing curing, and stress relaxation as possible explanations related to PETG behavior. Considering Industry 4.0 directions, followed by recent Industry 5.0 principles, interest in integrating legacy systems in industrial manufacturing has emerged. Due to the continuous evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), as well as the rapid extension of the scope and adoption of broader technologies, such integration has become feasible. Even though newly developed equipment provides easier interoperability, the replacement of legacy systems highly impacts cost and sustainability, which usually extends to the entire production process, the operators and the maintenance team, and sometimes even the robustness of the production process. Ensuring the interoperability of legacy systems is a problematic task, being dependent on technologies and development techniques and specific industrial domain particularities. This paper considers strategies to ensure the interoperability of legacy systems in a building-management system scenario where local structures are approached using both industrial protocols and web-based contexts. The solution is built following the Industry 5.0 pillars (sustainability, human focus, resilience) and conceives the entire data acquisition and supervisory solution to be flexible, open-source, resilient, and under the control of company engineers. The chosen environment for interfacing and supervision is Node-RED, enabling IoT and IIoT tools, together with a complete orientation toward digital transformation. This way, it is possible to construct a final result that enhances security while bridging outdated protocols and technologies, eliminating compatibility risks in the context of the evolutionary IIoT, ensuring critical process functions are possible, and aiding operators in complying with regulations governing building-management system (BMS) operations, thus solving the challenges that arise in the complex task of adopting the IoT backbone of digital transformation in relation to the integration of legacy equipment. The obtained solution is tested in an automotive industry building-management system, and the results demonstrate its performance, reliability, and high customizability in a context of openness and low cost. Background: Occupational medicine (OM) faces considerable challenges today, one of them related to the university training of future physicians considered suboptimal at a global level as it has been pointed out in many studies. The aim of this study is to update the state of OM medical education in European universities. Methods: Between March and August 2022, an e-mail survey regarding OM training to undergraduate medical students was conducted among OM professors at European universities in 28 countries (n = 347). Results: Of the 347 universities, 53 medical schools from 19 countries responded (response rate = 15.3%). In 89% of cases, OM was taught. The average number of hours per academic year was 24.3, with significant variation within the same country. Lectures were the most popular teaching technique (98%), with a considerable use of modern approaches such as problem-based learning (61%), and e-learning (57%). While occupational diseases and principles of prevention were covered, other subjects such as the environmental impact or collaboration with an OM physician were poorly represented in the educational program. Conclusion: According to data, several European medical schools may provide insufficient OM education and training to their students. The education of undergraduate occupational medicine students in European medical schools should be designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to meet today's challenges. Ge–Sb–Se–Te chalcogenides, namely Se-substituted Ge–Sb–Te, have been developed as an alternative optical phase change material (PCM) with a high figure-of-merit. A need for the integration of such new PCMs onto a variety of photonic platforms has necessitated the development of fabrication processes compatible with diverse material compositions as well as substrates of varying material types, shapes, and sizes. This study explores the application of chemical solution deposition as a method capable of creating conformally coated layers and delves into the resulting modifications in the structural and optical properties of Ge–Sb–Se–Te PCMs. Specifically, we detail the solution-based deposition of Ge–Sb–Se–Te layers and present a comparative analysis with those deposited via thermal evaporation. We also discuss our ongoing endeavor to improve available choice of processing-material combinations and how to realize solution-derived high figure-of-merit optical PCM layers, which will enable a new era for the development of reconfigurable photonic devices. It is shown that such mappings can be discontinuous as is the case of Chatterjea type mappings and this new class includes the class of Chatterjea type mappings. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic affected child health behaviors, leading to worse physical health. Given the importance of good family health in improved child health outcomes, this secondary cohort analysis tested the hypothesis that family health would improve from baseline to 12-week follow-up after participation in a novel family nutrition program. Methods: Diverse parent-child dyads participated in a home-based virtual Teaching Kitchen Outreach (vTKO) program (11 weekly healthy, low-cost recipes, cooking videos, and associated groceries delivered). The primary outcome was the Family Healthy Lifestyle Subscale (FHLS). Secondary outcomes were parent and child nutrition, and food insecurity. Statistical testing and modeling were used to evaluate pre-post outcomes. Results: Of 123 enrolled dyads, 114 (93%) had sufficient data for analysis. Participants were 11% Hispanic, 54% Black, and 28% White; 31% completed high school or less; and 30% indicated food insecurity. Cohort mean pre-post FHLS scores significantly increased (25.5 vs. 27.3; p < 0.001). There were significant improvements in parent nutrition (p < 0.001) and child nutrition (p = 0.02 to < 0.001), but not in food security. After adjusting for baseline covariates, tobit regression found statistically significant pre-post FHLS differences (2.3; 95% CI=[1.4, 3.3]; p < 0.001). Discussion: Participants in the novel home-based vTKO program reported improved family health over 12 weeks. Significance: While nutrition programs can improve individuals' behavior, it is not known how they impact the health of the family unit. This home-based virtual nutrition program provided groceries and taught food management skills to underserved families, examining family health differences over time. Family health is a proximal social determinant of health that predicts risk or resilience during times of stress. This is the first study to examine a change in family health over time. This article undertakes a comprehensive study of worldwide literature gathered from the Web of Science database, using bibliometric analysis. The analysis covers all the years, and most publications are from 1988 to 2024. The primary focus of the inquiry centres on the development of public service concept, public services citizens' satisfaction, services' stakeholders, public services' quality and performance during this period. The assessment of public services quality by citizens has been a prominent subject of scholarly investigation for a considerable period of time. By conducting keyword co-occurrence analysis on pertinent literature, our objective was to uncover dominant themes and track trends over a period of time. Novel insights were obtained by generating density, network, and overlay maps using VOS Viewer software. The keyword co-occurrence analysis performed using VOS Viewer unveiled an intricate and interrelated network of study themes within the literature on stakeholders' perceptions of the quality and performance of public services. The study discovered four main clusters, each reflecting separate yet intersecting research topics. An in-depth analysis of these clusters provides significant insights into the emerging patterns and key areas of interest in this subject. To effectively combat the re-infestation of boll weevils (Anthonomus grandis L.) in cotton fields, it is necessary to address the detection of volunteer cotton (VC) plants (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in rotation crops such as corn (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). The current practice involves manual field scouting at the field edges, which often leads to the oversight of VC plants growing in the middle of fields alongside corn and sorghum. As these VC plants reach the pinhead squaring stage (5–6 leaves), they can become hosts for boll weevil pests. Consequently, it becomes crucial to detect, locate, and accurately spot-spray these plants with appropriate chemicals. This paper focuses on the application of YOLOv5m to detect and locate VC plants during the tasseling (VT) growth stage of cornfields. Our results demonstrate that VC plants can be detected with a mean average precision (mAP) of 79% at an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 50% and a classification accuracy of 78% on images sized 1207 × 923 pixels. The average detection inference speed is 47 frames per second (FPS) on the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU-16 GB and 0.4 FPS on the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 GPU, which underscores the relevance and impact of detection speed on the feasibility of real-time applications. Additionally, we show the application of a customized unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for spot-spray applications through simulation based on the developed computer vision (CV) algorithm. This UAS-based approach enables the near-real-time detection and mitigation of VC plants in corn fields, with near-real-time defined as approximately 0.02 s per frame on the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU and 2.5 s per frame on the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 GPU, thereby offering an efficient management solution for controlling boll weevil pests. Purpose of Review: Sjögren Syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disorder that presents mainly with sicca symptoms, but frequently affects other body systems which can lead to a wide variety of manifestations. Understanding the neurological and psychiatric manifestations of Sjögren Syndrome can help with an earlier diagnosis of this disease and leads to better clinical outcomes. Recent Findings: We provide an updated overview of the central neurological manifestations, peripheral neurological manifestations and psychiatric manifestations and their diagnosis when associated with primary Sjögren Syndrome. The epidemiology and clinical features of the neurological and psychiatric manifestations are derived from different cohort studies and review articles that were selected from PubMed searches conducted between January 2024 and March 2024. Summary: The absence of diagnostic criteria and the scarcity of large, robust studies makes the recognition of the neurological and psychiatric manifestations of Sjögren Syndrome more difficult. Maintaining a high index of suspicion in clinical practice and a close collaboration between the Neurologist and the Rheumatologist will facilitate the diagnosis and management of these patients. IgE-mediated wheat allergy can take on various forms, including childhood food allergy to wheat, wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis in young adults, baker's respiratory allergy/asthma in workers exposed to wheat flour inhalation, and contact urticaria that is caused by hydrolyzed wheat proteins in some cosmetics, and that is sometimes associated with a food allergy. Singleplex and multiplex immunoassays detect specific IgE antibodies to wheat allergenic molecular biomarkers such as omega-5 gliadin Tri a 19, lipid transfer protein Tri a 14, and alpha-amylase inhibitors. The fluorescence enzyme immunoassay with capsulated cellulose polymer solid-phase coupled allergens is a commonly used singleplex assay. Multiplex methods include the ELISA-based macroarray immunoassay using nano-bead technology and a microarray immunoassay on polymer-coated slides. Another promising diagnostic tool is the basophil activation test performed with omega-5 gliadin and other wheat protein types. Detailed comprehension of the structural and immunological features of the numerous wheat allergens significant in clinical settings is imperative for advancing diagnostic biomarkers for IgE-mediated wheat allergies. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging treatment modality that utilizes light-sensitive compounds, known as photosensitizers, to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can selectively destroy malignant or diseased tissues upon light activation. This study investigates the incorporation of two porphyrin structures, 5-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tris-(4-acetoxy-3-methoxyphenyl) porphyrin (P2.2.) and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4-acetoxy-3-methoxyphenyl) porphyrin (P2.1.), into hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogels for potential use in topical photodynamic therapy (PDT). The structural and compositional properties of the resulting hydrogels were characterized using advanced techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. FTIR spectra revealed a slight shift of the main characteristic absorption bands corresponding to the porphyrins and their interactions with the HPC matrix, indicating successful incorporation and potential hydrogen bonding. XRD patterns revealed the presence of crystalline domains within the HPC matrix, indicating partial crystallization of the porphyrins dispersed within the amorphous polymer structure. TGA results indicated enhanced thermal stability of the HPC–porphyrin gels compared to 10% HPC gel, with additional weight loss stages corresponding to the thermal degradation of the porphyrins. Rheological analysis showed that the gels exhibited pseudoplastic behavior and thixotropic properties, with minimal impact on the flow properties of HPC by P2.1., but notable changes in viscosity and shear stress with P2.2. incorporation, indicating structural modifications. AFM imaging revealed a homogeneous distribution of porphyrins, and UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy confirmed the retention of their photophysical properties. Pharmacotechnical evaluations showed that the hydrogels possessed suitable mechanical properties, optimal pH, high swelling ratios, and excellent spreadability, making them ideal for topical application. Covalent cross-linked hydrogels based on chitosan and poly(maleic acid-alt-vinyl acetate) were prepared as spherical beads. The structural modifications of the beads during the preparation steps (dropping in liquid nitrogen and lyophilization, thermal treatment, washing with water, and treatment with NaOH) were monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy. The hydrogel beads have a porous inner structure, as shown by SEM microscopy; moreover, they are stable in acidic and basic pH due to the covalent crosslinking. The swelling degree is strongly influenced by the pH since the beads possess ionizable amine and carboxylic groups. The binding capacity for Cu2+ ions was examined in batch mode as a function of sorbent composition, pH, contact time, and the initial concentration of Cu2+. The kinetic data were well-fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic, while the sorption equilibrium data were better fitted with Langmuir and Sips isotherms. The maximum equilibrium sorption capacity was higher for the beads obtained with a 3:1 molar ratio between the maleic copolymer and chitosan (142.4 mg Cu2+ g−1), compared with the beads obtained using a 1:1 molar ratio (103.7 mg Cu2+ g−1). Background: In psoriatic arthritis (PsA), musculoskeletal ultrasound is a complementary tool to physical examination, useful even in patients in remission to detect subclinical activity. Objectives: The objective of the study was to assess the ultrasound prevalence of active enthesitis and synovitis in patients who reached the therapeutic target. Methods: This cross-sectional study included patients with at least 6 months of therapy with a targeted synthetic or biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drug who were in treatment target (i.e., DAPSA < 14). Patients underwent bilateral clinical and ultrasound examination of the elbow lateral epicondyle, quadriceps insertion, distal patellar tendon insertion, and Achilles enthesis for assessing enthesitis, and hand and foot joints for assessing synovitis. Enthesitis and synovitis were considered active if the power Doppler signal showed at least a score of one. Results: The study included 51 PsA patients, women (52.9%), with an average age of 55 years. Although the patients were within the DAPSA treatment target, 21.6% had at least one painful enthesis at clinical examination, 19.6% had ultrasound evidence of at least one active enthesitis and 15.7% had ultrasound signs of at least one active synovitis. There is an urgent need by the European Union to establish baseline levels for many widespread pollutants and to set out specific levels for these under the Zero pollution action plan. To date, few systematic reviews, superseded by bibliometric analyses, have explored this issue. Even less research has been carried out to compare the efficacy of these two data extraction approaches. This study aims to address these two issues by i) constructing an inventory of the available information on urban soils, highlighting evidence gaps and measuring compliance with the Zero pollution action plan, and by ii) comparing the methods and results of these two data extraction approaches. Through Scopus and Web of Science databases, peer-reviewed articles using the terms urban soil in combination with specific urban soil threats and/or challenges were included. Notably, both approaches retrieved a similar number of initial articles overall, while the bibliometric analysis removed fewer duplicates and excluded fewer articles overall, leaving the total number of articles included in each approach as: 603 articles in the systematic review and 2372 articles in the bibliometric analysis. Nevertheless, both approaches identified the two main urban soil threats and/or challenges to be linked to soil organic carbon and/or heavy metals. This study investigates the factors influencing pricing in Romanian rural tourism using a hedonic pricing model through a hybrid LASSO-OLS regression and geographically weighted regression (GWR). By analyzing data from 5028 unique accommodation units across 1170 local administrative units, we identify some key pricing determinants, including accommodation size, capacity, facilities, and environmental attributes. The results reveal that larger accommodations and those with higher guest capacities command higher prices. Luxurious facilities, such as massage services, pools, and fireplaces, significantly increase pricing, although the impact of such features varies by region, as do accommodation type and natural scenery, with agritouristic boarding houses and proximity to natural attractions like water bodies and forests being more valued in certain regions. Skin-friendly textile materials were obtained by applying oil-in-water emulsions based on palmarosa essential oil, chamomile, and calendula tinctures onto cotton fabrics. Different formulations based on these bioactive principles incorporated in collagen as polymeric matrices were prepared and immobilized on a plain weave textile structure from 100% cotton. The functionalized textile materials were characterized in terms of physicochemical, mechanical, antibacterial, and biocompatibility points of view. The pH values of the prepared emulsions were in the range of 4.81–5.23 and showed no significant differences after 4 h of storage. Moreover, the addition of a higher quantity of active principles (palmarosa essential oil and plant tinctures) caused slightly lower values of acidic pH. The electrical conductivity of the obtained emulsions increased with the decrease in the oil phases in the system. The highest values were obtained for the emulsion developed with the smallest volume fraction of active principle—palmarosa essential oil and plant tinctures. The emulsion that contained the least amount of collagen and the highest number of active principles exhibited the lowest stability. The textile materials treated with synthesized emulsions exerted antibacterial effects against S. aureus and E. coli strains and did not affect keratinocyte growth, spreading, and organization, highlighting the biocompatibility of these developed skin-friendly textiles. Ferns are vascular plants with significant ornamental value, and in recent years, they have also been considered for the potential application in different economic sectors like nutrition, medicine and cosmetics. This study aimed to obtain in vitro fern gametophytes and sporophytes and evaluate their potential as secondary metabolites sources. For this study four fern species were used: Polypodium vulgare L. (PV), Asplenium trichomanes L. (AT), Athyrium filix-femina L. Roth (AF), and Osmunda regalis L. (OR). The polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins and terpenoids content and antioxidant activity were estimated by different colorimetric methods. For metabolite identification and their antioxidant activity, HP-TLC separations were used. Also, quantitative HPLC–DAD analysis was performed to estimate the content of certain metabolites. The results showed that in vitro generation of gametophytes registered higher growth rates in OR, PV, and AF, while the regeneration of sporophytes was better for PV, AT, and AF. The OR gametophyte produced the highest quantities in all analyzed metabolite classes and also had the highest antioxidant values. We report for the first time the presence of metabolites such as catechin, caffeic acid, gallic acid, ferulic acid, cinnamic acid, or rutin in OR. This study has the main objective of the analysis of water flow through the active parts (cutting head CH) of an abrasive water jet (AWJ) machine, model YCWJ-380-1520, performed on a high-pressure nozzle (HPN) and mixing tube (MT). The flow is analyzed through the ruby orifice with a diameter of 0.25 mm by assimilating it with a circular pipe. Taking into account the fact that the average flow velocity through the ruby orifice is about 622 m/s, the value of 155,500 according to the Reynolds criterion was obtained. Regarding the turbulent flow regime, the flow section is divided into four zones; for each of them, the limits of flow layers and the maximum values of water velocities were determined. In the second part of this work, a 2D analysis of the flow through the CH assembly was carried out. Since the abrasive inlet tube (AT) also appears in the CH componence, two situations were analyzed in this study, namely, the case when the inlet through AT is restricted and the case when the AT is free. For each case, three values of flow diameters were considered, both for HPN and MT. Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents one of the most impacting health issues of the modern era, as it is associated with an extensive range of comorbidities. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one the utmost severe diabetes complications as it is one of the major causes of vision loss among these patients. Our present research aims to evaluate the most frequent risk factors related to the occurrence of DR in T2DM patients. Method: This study consisted of a research group of 302 participants, priorly diagnosed with T2DM, that were evaluated for the most important risk factors related to the occurrence of DR. Results: Patients had a median age of 64 years, 48% of them being women, with a 12-year median duration of DM and presenting a deficient glycaemic control echoed by a median HbA1C value of 7.5%. From the total number of participants, the total prevalence of DR in different stages of severity was 34.8% with a 95% CI. Statistically significant values were found regarding DM duration (p = 0.007), HbA1c > 7.2% (p = 0.001) and patients aged over 67 years (p = 0.0035), all these parameters being directly linked to DR. Conclusions: Older patients with T2DM that have a longer disease duration and simultaneous comorbidities present a higher risk of DR development, consequently a stringent management of these pathologies is needed.
