Background: Dry eye syndrome (DES) is common but lack of data in quality of life (QoL) of DES patients in Thailand. The primary outcome of this study was to determine QoL and health utility in patients of DES by EuroQol 5-domain (EQ-5D) of the 5-level version (5 L) instrument. The secondary outcome was comparison of the utility in the patients of DES classified by severity and causes including the autoimmune and non-autoimmune diseases. Method: The study was a cross-sectional study at a hospital in the northern part of Thailand. The inclusions DES patients were followed by Tear Film and Ocular surface Society the Dry Eye WorkShop II definition. The EQ-5D-5 L (Thai version) descriptive system and the EQ visual analogue scale (VAS) was instrument for QoL evaluation. Result: Total patients of DES were fifty-six. The most patients were female. The mean age was 57.7(± 13.9) years. The mean of EQ-5D-utility and EQ-VAS were 0.76 (± 0.18) and 72.56 (± 15.19), respectively. The mean of EQ-5D-utility in these patients who were classified by severity including mild, moderate and severe were 0.84 (± 0.16), 0.78 (± 0.14) and 0.71 (± 0.22), respectively. There is no statistic significant in the EQ-5D-utility and EQ-VAS among severity and the causes of these patients. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the importance of assessing QoL in DES. The EQ-5D-utility was accorded with the severity of DES. However, no statistic significant was showed in the mean of EQ-5D-utility and EQ-VAS between the severity and between the causes including the autoimmune and non-autoimmune diseases of these patients. Introduction: Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial condition of the ocular surface (OS) characterized by loss of tear film homeostasis, ocular discomfort, and vision disturbances. Most available ocular lubricants target the aqueous deficiency of the tear, restoring only this layer, leaving the tear lipid stratum deficient, as occurs in most patients with evaporative DED. An innovative propylene glycol-hydroxypropyl guar enriched with a phospholipid nanoemulsion (PG-HPG-PH-N) is indicated to restore deficiencies in both the lipid and aqueous layers of the tear film, and its composition was designed to increase lubricant retention on the OS. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, through the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and clinical assessment, the treatment of patients who had DED due to aqueous deficiency arising from mixed or evaporative DED subtypes with a PG-HPG-PH-N ocular lubricant at a reduced frequency of twice a day, in a prospective, multicenter, and single-arm study. Methods: Patients were screened from days − 7 to 0, and from day 1 (baseline and first day of treatment) to day 28 of treatment with this lubricant. After visit 1 (screening visit, days − 7 to 0), designed as pre-treatment OS assessment, patients returned to their research center on days 14 and 28 of treatment for a complete assessment, including anamnesis, the OSDI, corrected visual acuity, tear breakup time (TFBUT), OS staining evaluation, tolerability index, and environmental exposure questionnaire. Results: Seventy patients were enrolled in this study (60 women, 10 men), with a mean age of 45 (range 27–64) years. TFBUT results showed an improvement in tear film stability as vital dyes sodium fluorescein and lysamine green showed a decrease in corneal staining after 14 and 28 days of treatment. No significant adverse events were reported, demonstrating the good tolerability of the lubricant. Conclusions: The PG-HPG-PH-N nanoemulsion can be considered to be a safe and effective ocular lubricant for treating DED due to aqueous deficiency, both mixed and evaporative subtypes. Introduction: Dry eye disease (DED) is a frequently observed condition characterized by ocular discomfort and visual disturbance. It is highly prevalent and impairs patients' quality of life (QoL). This study assessed the benefit of a preservative-free bioprotectant eye drop formulation containing sodium hyaluronate and trehalose (SH-trehalose) with regards to DED, as well as patient satisfaction, through a large-scale real-life survey. Methods: In a multi-center, international, prospective observational study, subjects with DED received SH-trehalose for 84 days. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Dry Eye Questionnaire-5 items (DEQ-5), and patient satisfaction were assessed at baseline, day 28, and day 84, and clinical evaluations included ocular surface staining, Schirmer test, tear film break-up time (TBUT), and conjunctival hyperemia at baseline and day 84. Results: A total of 312 patients were evaluated, of whom 82.4% were women. The mean age was 57.9 ± 15.2 years. The mean OSDI score at baseline was 41.7 ± 20.6. After 84 days, the mean OSDI score was 27.3 ± 19.8 (p < 0.001). The percentage of patients with a severe OSDI score decreased from 60.3 to 34.5%. The DEQ-5 score significantly (p < 0.001) improved after 28 and 84 days, as did patient satisfaction. Ocular surface staining, Schirmer test, TBUT, and conjunctival hyperemia scores improved significantly (all p < 0.001) for both eyes with SH-trehalose between baseline and day 84. Tolerance of SH-trehalose was good. Conclusions: SH-trehalose significantly improved the clinical signs and symptoms of DED after 84 days. Background: To assess and compare the therapeutic outcomes of 0.05% Cyclosporine A (CsA) ophthalmic solution versus 0.1% Fluorometholone (FML) eyedrops in Chinese patients with mild dry eye disease (DED) unresponsive to conventional artificial tears (AT). Methods: A total of 43 patients with mild DED, who have failed to respond to conventional AT therapy for over 3 months, were randomly assigned to receive either 0.05% CsA or 0.1% FML twice daily for 6-months. In addition, all the patients were instructed to use 0.1% SH 4 times a day as supplementary therapy. Dry eye examination, including Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT), Schirmer scores, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) scores, and conjunctival goblet cell (CGC) density, intraocular pressure (IOP), Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was conducted at baseline and then evaluated at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. Corneal endothelial cell density, corneal dendritic cells (DCs) and nerves were assessed by in vivo confocal microscopy at baseline and 6 months after treatment. Results: At 3 and 6 months after treatment, OSDI scores in the 0.05% CsA group showed more improvement than those in the 0.1% FML group. CFS was significantly lower and Schirmer scores were significantly higher in 0.05% CsA group compared with 0.1% FML group. NIBUT improved significantly in both groups, with greater improvement in the 0.05% CsA group at the 1-, 3-, and 6-month visits. Throughout the duration of the study, the 0.1% FML group exhibited no notable enhancement in CGC density. Conversely, a substantial elevation in CGC density was observed in the 0.05% CsA group. After 6 months of treatment, significantly reduced corneal DC density and area were obtained in 0.05% CsA group as compared to 0.1% FML group, while there were no significant changes in cornea nerve fiber density, cornea nerve fiber length and cornea nerve fiber width in both groups. Additionally, after 6 months of treatment, neither group showed any statistically significant changes in IOP, BCVA or in corneal endothelial cell density. Conclusion: The administration of 0.05% CsA proved effective in managing mild DED, offering a supplementary advantage in improving Schirmer scores, restoring CGC density and reducing corneal DC density compared to 0.1% FML eyedrops. Consequently, 0.05% CsA eyedrops are recommended as a safe and efficacious therapeutic alternative for patients with mild DED who fail to respond to conventional tear substitutes therapy. Dry eye disease (DED) is a growing public health concern affecting millions of people worldwide and causing ocular discomfort and visual disturbance. Developing its therapeutic drugs based on animal models suffer from interspecies differences and poor prediction of human trials. Here, we established long‐term 3D human corneal epithelial organoids, which recapitulated the cell lineages and gene expression signature of the human corneal epithelium. Organoids can be regulated to differentiate ex vivo, but the addition of FGF10 inhibits this process. In the hyperosmolar‐induced DED organoid model, the release of inflammatory factors increased, resulting in damage to the stemness of stem cells and a decrease in functional mucin 1 protein. Furthermore, we found that the organoids could mimic clinical drug treatment responses, suggesting that corneal epithelial organoids are promising candidates for establishing a drug testing platform ex vivo. In summary, we established a functional, long‐term 3D human epithelial organoid that may serve as an ex vivo model for studying the functional regulation and disease modelling. Background: Dry eye disease is one of the most common disorders we see in practice today. Perfluorohexyloctane (PFHO) ophthalmic solution (MIEBO®) (©Bausch + Lomb) is a novel, non-aqueous, single entity, preservative-free ophthalmic drop recently approved by the FDA for treatment of the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. Purpose: While the safety and efficacy of PFHO has been demonstrated in non-contact lens wearers, its safety and potential benefits in habitual contact lens wearers have not been explored. This report presents the results of a trial designed to evaluate the safety of PFHO and its effect on contact lens comfort, specifically in established contact lens wearers. Patients and methods: The study included 47 patients who were adjusted contact lens wearers with a best corrected visual acuity of 20/25 or better at distance. All the patients were healthy contact lens wearers with no dry eye symptoms. Results: A significant improvement in comfort scoring was observed without any significant changes in osmolarity, meibography scores, and total fluorescein staining. Introduction: Despite an improved understanding of its pathogenesis, dry eye disease (DED) remains relatively underestimated and its treatment challenging. A better alignment between the clinical evaluation and the patient self-assessment also requires capturing the whole patient experience of DED. This project aimed to unveil this experience through narrative medicine (NM). Methods: The project involved 38 expert centres in Italy and one in San Marino, targeting adult patients with DED, their informal caregivers and their treating ophthalmologists. Written narratives and sociodemographic and quality of life (QoL)-related data were anonymously collected through the project's webpage. Narratives were analysed through MAXQDA (VERBI Software, Berlin, Germany), NM classifications and content analysis. Results: A total of 171 patients with DED, 37 informal caregivers and 81 ophthalmologists participated in the research. DED was defined as a disabling condition by 19% of patients and 35% of caregivers; 70% of patients reported that a therapeutic alliance is an integral part of DED treatment and 32% hope for more effective therapies. Forty-four per cent of patients assessed their own QoL as good; however, DED emerged as importantly impacting work performance and social events. DED physical, emotional and economic burden and the cruciality of a trusting care relationship represent the main themes that emerged across all narratives, while empathy and effective treatment are among the factors favouring coping with DED. Conclusion: This project marked a pioneering initiative investigating the lived experience of patients with DED through NM, simultaneously involving all viewpoints involved in the care pathway. NM enabled the unveiling of factors favouring the ability to cope with DED and its associated QoL implications and provided valuable insights to improve the therapeutic alliance. Introduction: High-tech devices for the assessment of dry eye disease (DED) are increasingly available. However, the agreement between high- and low-tech parameters has been poorly explored to date. Trying to fill these gaps, we conducted a post hoc analysis on a recently published retrospective study on patients with DED receiving both low- and high-tech (Keratograph®) assessments, and treatment with different lubricating eyedrops. Methods: Six clinical questions were defined by the authors, considering literature gaps and their clinical experience, namely: (1) are NIKBUT-i and T-BUT interchangeable parameters? (2) What was the correlation between low- and high-tech parameters in untreated and treated patients with DED? (3) What was the correlation between signs and symptoms at baseline and during/after treatment? (4) Which parameters were better associated with symptoms? And with symptoms change over time? (5) What was the performance of NIKBUT-i and T-BUT in detecting clinically relevant changes? (6) What was the clinical advantage of adding other high- and low-tech parameters, respectively, to NIKBUT-i and T-BUT? Results: Low-tech measures were the best descriptors of the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) at baseline. In contrast, high-tech assessments demonstrate better performance in detecting changes over time. The distribution of NIKBUT-i data was more dispersed than TBUT both at baseline and follow-up. At a fixed specificity of 80%, the sensitivity in detecting clinically relevant ameliorations of symptoms was 42% for NIKBUT-i and 25% for T-BUT. A battery of high-tech tests could detect 90% of clinical amelioration, compared with 45% with low-tech tests (p < 0.001). Correlation between low- and high-tech parameters in both treated and untreated patients is lacking. Conclusions: Low-tech measures are adequate for diagnostic purposes in DED, whereas high-tech showed better performances at follow-up, particularly when different tests are combined. Background: Comprehensive research on the impact of various types of refractive errors (RE) and anisometropia on dry eye disease is still lacking. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence rates and potential lifestyle factors related to symptomatic dry eye (SDE) among adolescents in eastern China. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in 2023, and a stratified cluster sampling technique was used among adolescents in Nantong, China. Demographic information, including sex, age and BMI, were collected. All participants underwent optometric tests, while Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and self-designed questionnaires were administered. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess associations between SDE and related parameters, and various types of RE and anisometropia were also included in the study. Results: A total of 1,518 participants were enrolled in the study, and the overall prevalence of SDE was 20.3% among adolescents in Nantong, China. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that high myopia (aOR = 3.42, 95% CI = 1.60–3.36, p = 0.025), frequent use of eye drops (aOR = 2.31, 95% CI = 1.60–3.36, p<0.001), a history of allergic conjunctivitis (aOR = 1.93, 95% CI = 1.09–3.34, p = 0.025), and frequent blinking (aOR = 3.23, 95% CI = 2.31–4.53, p<0.001) were identified as risk factors for SDE. Conversely, male gender (aOR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.58–0.99, p = 0.043), increased sleep time (6–7 h: aOR = 0.64, 95% CI = 0.46–0.89, p = 0.009; 7–8 h: aOR = 0.64, 95% CI = 0.43–0.95, p = 0.026; >8 h: aOR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.23–0.82, p = 0.010), and timely intervention when vision decline occurred were protective factors against SDE (aOR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.43–0.85, p = 0.004). Conclusion: High myopia was found to be independently associated with an increased risk of SDE., while hyperopia, astigmatism, and anisometropia were not independent risk factors for SDE. Background: Dry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent condition affecting over 16 million patients in the USA. DED and the symptoms of ocular discomfort are debilitating and a significant burden on patients. If left untreated, DED can progress to cause severe pathology. Treatment is often initiated by patients without consulting a healthcare professional. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of a novel lipid-containing eye drop (BTC), which might better mimic the components of natural tears. Methods: This was a multicenter, randomized, double-masked, active control, two arm, parallel group study of eye drops in adult subjects with self-reported DED. Subjects were randomly assigned to BTC or control (commercially available non-lipid eye drops; NLED) arm and were followed for 30 days. Assessments using visual analog scale and patient-reported outcomes (PRO) questionnaires, non-invasive tear break up time, slit-lamp examination, and subject-reported ocular symptoms were conducted at baseline and at days 7 and 30. The primary endpoint was change in overall ocular comfort score from baseline to day 30. Results: 158 subjects were randomized, of whom 130 completed the study per protocol (PP). Mean (SD) age was 47.8 (14.14) years. The mean (95% CI) change in overall comfort scores at the 30-day follow-up in the PP population was 21.4 (15.1, 27.7) for the test drop and 10.0 (3.9, 16.1) for the comparator. The mean (95% CI) treatment difference was 11.3 (2.6, 20.1); this met the pre-defined requirements for non-inferiority. There was no significant difference in the proportion of eyes with reported ocular symptoms between the groups. At day 7, the OR (95% CI) was 0.967 (0.528, 1.770) and at day 30 was 1.160 (0.610, 2.203). There were no Grade 3 or higher corneal edema, corneal neovascularization, corneal staining, conjunctival injection, tarsal abnormalities or any other biomicroscopy findings, and no corneal infiltrates observed during the study. Conclusions: The investigational lipid eye drop BTC was noninferior to the commercially available non-lipid comparator in all parameters measured and has the potential to provide an effective therapy for subjects with symptoms of dry eye who would benefit from a lipid-based artificial tear. Higher serum cholesterol levels have been associated with an increased risk of dry eye disease (DED). The relationship between statin (HMG‐CoA reductase inhibitor) use and DED in patients with hyperlipidemia remains unclear. To investigate the association between statin use and the risk of DED in patients with hyperlipidemia, we conducted a population‐based retrospective cohort study utilizing data from Taiwan's Longitudinal Generation Tracking Database. Patients were categorized into statin users and nonusers, with a 5‐year follow‐up period. The study identified patients with newly diagnosed hyperlipidemia, excluding those with prior DED diagnoses. Matching and adjustments for covariates resulted in 41,931 individuals in each group. Patients receiving statin therapy were compared with those unexposed. Cumulative exposure doses were also evaluated to assess dose–response relationships. The primary outcome was the incidence of DED diagnosed during the follow‐up period. Cox proportional hazards regression models estimated the risk of DED, and conditional logistic regression analyzed the dose–response effect of statin exposure. Among 41,931 matched pairs, statin users exhibited a slightly increased risk of developing DED compared with nonusers (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02–1.11; p < 0.01). However, no dose–response relationship was observed between statin exposure and DED risk. Statin use among patients with hyperlipidemia is associated with a marginally higher risk of DED. Purpose: This prospective comparative study aimed to assess the effects on contact lens comfort, dryness, and wear time when symptomatic daily disposable (DD) contact lens (CL) wearers were refit with delefilcon A (DT1) lenses. Patients and Methods: Thirty five symptomatic DD CL wearers with dry eye disease as determined according to the TFOS DEWS 2 guidelines, were enrolled and completed the study. Participants wore their habitual DD CLs during an initial assessment and were subsequently refit with DT1 for 1 month. Participants were masked to the study lens type. Subjective ratings of end-of-day comfort and dryness, average wear time, and comfortable wear time were evaluated as primary endpoints. Results: Of the 35 participants, two participants were classified as aqueous deficient dry eye, while the remaining participants exhibited symptoms primarily due to evaporative causes. The median CLDEQ-8 score for dryness significantly improved from 17 (fair) with habitual lenses to 13 (good) with DT1 lenses (p < 0.01). Participants reported significantly better end-of-day comfort (p = 0.01) and less end-of-day dryness (p = 0.01) with DT1 compared to their habitual DD lenses. The comfortable wear time was significantly longer with DT1 (8.5 ± 4.1 hours) compared to habitual DD lenses (6.7 ± 3.2 hours) (p = 0.04). No significant differences were observed in vision ratings (p = 0.07). Conclusion: Refitting symptomatic DD CL wearers with DT1 resulted in improved end-of-day comfort, reduced end-of-day dryness, and extended comfortable wear time compared to their habitual lenses. Introduction: Dry eye disease (DED) is one of the most prevalent eye conditions worldwide, with artificial tears serving as a primary treatment option. Despite their wide availability on the European market, there is a lack of established classifications based on their physicochemical properties. The aim of our study was therefore (i) to develop an analytical method that measures the concentration and the molecular weight (MW) of the hyaluronic acid (HA) in commercialized products, and (ii) to propose an overview based on their various physicochemical parameters. Methods: The intrinsic viscosity and MW of the HA, as well as osmolarity, pH, rheological profile, and viscosity, were measured or determined. A specific method was developed to measure the average intrinsic viscosity and HA content using a liquid size-exclusion chromatography system. The MW was determined using the Mark–Houwink equation. Results: Thirty-seven products commercialized in Europe were analyzed, with 21 of them containing HA. The HA MW was lowest (300 kDa) for Thealose®, Thealoz Duo® Gel, and Hyabak®, and highest (1300 kDa) for Vismed® Multi, Vismed® Gel, and Neovis® Gel. The pH values varied between 5.94 for Treovis® and 8.06 for Systane® Ultra. Osmolarity ranged between 148 mOsm/L and 325 mOsm/L for Neovis® and Treovis®, respectively. Viscosity was highly variable, ranging from 0.38 mPas·s for Hylolipid® to 337.47 mPas·s for Thealoz® Duo Gel. Finally, rheological profile analysis revealed different shear-thinning behaviors. Conclusion: While the perfect eye drop does not exist, a multitude of options are available to choose from. This study improves our understanding of the major tear substitutes available on the European market based on several physicochemical properties. Introduction: Patients with dry eye disease (DED) complain of a multitude of symptoms that affect their visual function and quality of life (QoL). This clinical investigation assessed the performance, tolerance, and safety of a novel preservative-free ophthalmic solution containing xanthan gum 0.2% and desonide sodium phosphate 0.025%. Methods: This was an observational, prospective, multicentric, and post-market clinical investigation to assess the effect of three times a day instillation of the study formulation in patients suffering from DED. The primary objective was to achieve a 50% reduction in conjunctival hyperemia index as assessed with the OCULUS Keratograph after 1 month of treatment compared to baseline values. The secondary objectives included patient-reported outcomes, clinical performance, and safety. Results: Thirty patients were enrolled (21 women, 9 men) with a mean age of 61.10 ± 14.53 years. The instillation of the study formulation was associated with a significant reduction in redness scores after 1 month of treatment compared to baseline (mean − 0.51 ± 0.51; p ≤ 0.0001). Although the primary endpoint was not completely met, a 50% reduction in the conjunctival hyperemia index was achieved in 23% of the participants, and 77% showed a reduction of 26% of the same index. In addition, the ophthalmic solution significantly increased tear film break-up time, and a significant reduction of corneal and conjunctival staining with fluorescein was achieved. It also reduced DED symptoms and had a very good safety profile. Conclusions: the study formulation produced a significant improvement in the signs, symptoms, and QoL of patients with mild to moderate DED with a good safety profile after 1 month of treatment. Introduction: This review examines how mechanisms that are not related to tear dysfunctions may contribute to the development of symptoms of dry eye disease and help to explain why dry eye symptoms do not correlate with signs. Consideration is also given to the significance of tear deficiencies which cannot contribute to an examination of symptom-sign correlation. Areas covered: Tear deficiencies which are not routinely assessed include inflammation, mucin quantity and quality, as well as corneal neuropathy and blink inefficiency. Expert opinion: Tear deficiencies detected in an examination of patients reporting symptoms of dry eye disease become the targets for remedial approaches but not always with satisfactory outcomes. Other possible influences on symptoms could include genetic predispositions, sex, ethnicity, race, health literacy, mental health conditions, lower perceived health-related quality of life, and psychological factors. However, these possible influences cannot be assessed in most dry eye disease clinical settings. Consequently, too often symptoms of dry eye cannot correlate with signs of tear dysfunction that are not identified (and so not treated). Consequently, noncompliance with treatment recommendations may not be relevant to the persistence of symptoms or signs when treatment does not address tear dysfunctions which are difficult to assess. Background: Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a widespread ocular condition affecting the general population. It is a complex disorder affecting the eye surface, characterized by a tear film imbalance and ocular symptoms such as eye ache, burning, irritation, dryness, blurred vision, and foreign body sensation. DES can reduce visual acuity, increase the risk of ocular infection, and significantly impact daily activities and quality of life. Aim: Determine the impact of nursing-led educational program on the management of DES and patients' health outcomes including the intensity of DES symptoms and their influence on visual-related functions. Methods: The study was conducted with a quasi-experimental design. Sixty adult patients diagnosed with DES were selected using a convenience sampling method. Two tools were employed for the collection of data. Tool I: Precipitating factors of DES structured interview schedule. Long-acting diquafosol ophthalmic solution (DQS-LX) has significant advantages regarding patient adherence owing to the reduced frequency of required eye drops; however, some patients prefer conventional diquafosol ophthalmic solution (DQS) over DQS-LX. Herein, to clarify the characteristics of patients according to their preference for ophthalmic solutions, dry eye (DE) and meibomian gland (MG) findings were retrospectively investigated. This study enrolled 341 patients with DE (mean age, 62.1 ± 11.7 years) treated at the Itoh Clinic between November 8, 2022, and July 31, 2023, who switched from DQS to DQS-LX. Patients were divided into two groups: those who continued DQS-LX administration (DQS-LX group) and those who wished to revert to conventional DQS (DQS group). Data regarding subjective symptoms assessed using the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) questionnaire, tear film breakup time (BUT), tear meniscus height (TMH), corneal and conjunctival fluorescein staining (CFS), conjunctival hyperemia/papilla, meiboscore, plugging, vascularity, meibum grade, and Schirmer's score at the time of DQS-LX switch were evaluated. Of the 341 patients, 31 (9.1%) wished to revert to conventional DQS. In total, 16 eyes of 16 patients in the DQS group and 32 eyes of 32 patients in the DQS-LX group—for whom complete data were available—were included in the analysis. The DQS-LX group had higher SPEED scores, lower TMHs (P < 0.001, respectively), shorter FBUTs, greater CFS findings, larger meibum grades, lower Schirmer scores, and more pluggings compared with the DQS group (P = 0.005, 0.001, 0.001, 0.046, 0.003, respectively). Meiboscores and vascularity did not differ significantly between the two groups (P = 0.73 and 0.39, respectively). Background: Warm compresses are the routine treatment for Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in daily life, but in order to achieve satisfactory efficacy, the treatment needs to be sustained over a long time, which can have an impact on the patient compliance. A more convenient warm compresses will help improve the patient compliance. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to investigate the efficacy and safety of the disposable eyelid warming masks for treatment of dry eye disease (DED) due to MGD. Methods: This was a randomized, controlled, non-masked, two-center clinical trial. One hundred and forty-four patients were treated by the masks or the hot towel twice daily for 12 weeks. Patients were evaluated at baseline, 4-week and 12-week visits for subjective symptoms, objective signs and safety assessments, including ocular symptom scores, ocular surface disease index (OSDI), tear break-up time (BUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), Schirmer I test (SIT), meibum quality, meibum expressibility, and adverse events (AEs). Results: A totle of 134 patients were followed in the study. The mean age of the masks group (14 males and 52 females) and the hot towel group (20 males and 48 females) was 43.7 ± 13.5 years and 39.5 ± 13.9 years, respectively. At 4-week visit, there were significant statistical differences in ocular symptom scores, OSDI and CFS between two groups (P < 0.05). Except for SIT, the treatment group showed a greater improvement in subjective symptoms and objective signs than the control group at 12-week visit. (P < 0.05). In addition, 40 AEs occurred in 27 patients (37.5%) in the treatment group, and 34 AEs occurred in 21 patients (29.17%) in the control group. No serious AEs were reported. Background: To evaluate the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) and its associated risk factors in a sample of the Argentine population. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional population-based study was conducted in Argentina during April 2022 through an anonymous electronic survey that included participants aged 12 years old or older. The prevalence of symptomatic DED was evaluated using the Women's Health Study (WHS) dry eye questionnaire. In addition, a list of conditions possibly related to dry eye were evaluated in the questionnaire to assess the prevalence of potential risk factors. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: 10,812 subjects (mean age 44.1 ± 13.9, range 12–94 years old) answered the survey. Overall prevalence of DED was 42.1%. DED prevalence in women was 45.1% (3848 out of 8525) and in men was 30.8% (704 out of 2287). Risk factors were female sex (OR 2.78; p < 0.001), age > 60 years (OR 2.92), rheumatologic disease (OR 2.80, CI 1.62–3.13), use of digital screens for more than 6 h per day (OR 2.62; CI 1.43–2.80), glaucoma topical treatment (OR 2.05; CI 1.20–3.01), dysthyroidism (2.03; CI 1.48–2.51), and sleeping less than 7 h per day (OR 1.92; CI 1.30–2.51). Background: A cross-sectional population-based survey in the Beichen district of Tianjin was conducted to estimate the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) among the population over 50 years old with Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) II and Chinese expert consensus (CEC) criteria. Methods: A total of 5791 subjects over 50 years old were enrolled. Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, lipid layer thickness (LLT), partial blink ratio (PBR), fluorescein tear film breakup time (FBUT), Schirmer I test (SIT), fluorescein staining, meibomian gland dropout, meibomian gland expression scores (MES) and quantity scores (MQS) was assessed. Additionally, basic information, weight, disease history, living habits, anxiety, and depression condition were collected. Results: According to the CEC, the prevalence of DED was 39.0%, whereas 44.0% based on DEWS II. The prevalence of DED increased with age and was substantially greater among women (41.1%, 95% CI, 39.5-42.6%) than males (35.1%, 95% CI, 33.1 -37.2%) (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the severity of DED was more severe in women (p = 0.006). The associated risk factors were age, female, depression, smoking, insomnia, and glaucoma. On the other hand, 53.6% of these populations were diagnosed as asymptomatic DED, and the morbidity was higher in males (p = 0.007). Conclusions: The prevalence of DED in China was relatively high, which was associated with aging, female(sex), depression, smoking and sleep problems. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the associations between environmental and occupational factors and the prevalence of dry eye symptoms among participants from the Ahsa region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: Participants from urban, rural, and suburban areas seeking medical care at primary health centers were recruited through systematic random sampling. Data on demographics, exposures, and ocular health were captured using a structured questionnaire. Dry eye symptoms were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Impact of Dry Eye on Everyday Life (IDEEL), and Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye (SANDE) questionnaires. Logistic regression analysis examined the relationships between environmental/occupational factors and the prevalence of dry eye symptoms. Results: Key exposures included particulate matter (PM) (60%), low humidity (55%), wind/dust (50%), prolonged computer use (65%), and chemical irritants (45%). These factors were significantly associated with an increased prevalence of dry eye symptoms, with the following odds ratios (ORs): PM (1.85, 95% CI: 1.35– 2.52), low humidity (1.45, 95% CI: 1.05– 2.00), wind and dust (1.60, 95% CI: 1.20– 2.14), prolonged computer use (2.10, 95% CI: 1.55– 2.85), and chemical irritants (1.75, 95% CI: 1.30– 2.35). All associations were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The use of protective equipment was associated with reduced odds of dry eye symptoms (OR 0.60, 95% CI: 0.42– 0.85, p = 0.03). Background: This research aims to investigate the influence of environmental factors on the treatment efficacy of ocular lubricants in patients from urban areas with dry eye disease (DED). Methods: A phase IV clinical trial, which included 173 patients from major cities in Mexico, was randomly assigned to use ocular lubricants four times a day for 30 days. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), noninvasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT), ocular staining, and conjunctival hyperemia (CH) among other factors like weather, and air pollution as covariates were analysed. Results: After 30 days, OSDI score decreased by 14.8 points (p< 0.001), and NIBUT increased by 2.9 seconds (p< 0.001), with longer values observed in patients recruited in autumn and winter (additional 1.8 seconds, p< 0.05) compared to those recruited in spring. Patients living in cities with cooler weather and high humidity, but low air quality had higher OSDI and conjunctival stain scores of up to 4.4 and 0.3 points, respectively, as compared to those living in cities with similar pollution and humidity levels but with higher temperatures (p-values= 0.019 and 0.050). Patients with moderate CH had an increase of up to 0.8 points in their corneal stain score (p< 0.010). We also found that ozone levels were related to the predicted changes in OSDI and NIBUT. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the impact of environmental factors on the signs and symptoms of DED and suggests that patients residing in cities with inadequately controlled air pollution can benefit from using ocular lubricants to alleviate their symptoms. Background: An impaired ocular surface presents substantial challenges in terms of planning for cataract surgery. As a multifactorial ocular disorder, dry eye disease (DED) is common in the general population and prevalent in patients scheduled for lens replacement surgery. Cataract surgery can exacerbate DED and worsen several ocular parameters. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment of DED are vital to ensuring positive ophthalmic surgical outcomes. This consensus report of the Taiwan Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (TSCRS) regarding the management of DED before, during, and after cataract surgery highlights the gaps between clinical guidelines and several aspects of DED, including diagnostic testing, diagnostic criteria, and clinical practice treatment. Methods: An expert panel of five specialists in the field of ophthalmology was recruited to develop consensus statements regarding the management of DED in both the general population and in patients undergoing cataract surgery in Taiwan. Two separate meetings of the five specialists, who were endorsed by the TSCRS, were convened for this purpose. A survey questionnaire consisting of binary or multiple-choice questions was developed through a consensus-driven formulation process. A percentage value was calculated for each statement, and a minimum of 60% agreement (equivalent to three out of five members) was required to achieve consensus. The second discussion meeting involved the presentation of the finalized consensus statements and concluded the consensus development process. Lastly, the finalized consensus statements were approved by all the experts, and the formulated recommendations for DED in the general population and prospective cataract surgery patients were accordingly presented. Results: The optimal algorithm for managing DED in the general population and in patients scheduled for cataract surgery was developed to address the unmet needs of this cohort in Taiwan. Conclusion: This report provides recommendations for managing dry eye disease. It is essential to screen and confirm DED through endorsed questionnaires and tests and then diagnose it. Background: Thin tear film is the unique fluid layer, covers external mucosal surface of the eye. As such this layer is the interface between the ocular surface and the environment. This thin film is a transparent layer, has a mucin phase and a distinct lipid layer superficially. The lipid layer prevents evaporation of tears from outer ocular surface. Dry eye occurs due to insufficient lubrication of ocular surface and a potentially harmful condition which limits the activity as well as in extreme cases causes' blindness. Objectives: To assess prevalence of dry eye in post menopausal women. Materials and Methods: This study was planned and conducted in a tertiary care health institute in eastern India. Total no of subjects recruited in this study was 183. Post menopausal women attending outpatient department (OPD) were included on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Diagnosis of dry was done by Schimmer's test. Data analysis was done by Chi square test. Results: Out of 183 subjects 97 postmenopausal women were suffering from dry eye which accounts 53% prevalence. Prevalence of dry eye in the age group 51-60, 61-70 and more than 70 years were 42.8%, 50.9% and 67.2% respectively. Also we found that, out of 97 dry eye, 54 (55.6%) were symptomatic and 43 (44.4%) were asymptomatic. Mild, moderate and severe form of dry eyes was 50.5%, 38.1%, and 11.4% respectively. Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a tear film disorder caused by increased tear evaporation or decreased production. The heavy workload on the eye and the increased usage of digital screens may decrease blink frequency, leading to an increased evaporation rate and an upsurge in the incidence and severity of DES. This study aims to assess the severity of DES symptoms and the risk factors among university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Umm AlQura University to evaluate the severity of DES among students and explore its potential association with digital screen use. Validated questionnaires were used to assess the severity of DES and digital screen usage. The study included 457 participants, of which 13% had symptoms suggestive of severe DES. Furthermore, multiple risk factors had a significant association with the severity of DES, including gender, use of monitor filters, monitor and room brightness, and smoking habits. DES symptoms were prevalent among university students, particularly female students. Although there was no significant association with the duration of screen usage and collage distribution. Other factors however, such as the usage of screen monitors and the brightness of both the monitor and the room, were significantly associated with the severity of DES symptoms. Objective and subjective dry eye tests. The vision, endothelial cell count, and the pressure inside the eye were all found to be within normal limits after the IPL treatment. Even though the people in our study had glaucoma and had been taking glaucoma medicine for it for a year and the fact that the symptoms last for a long time may also change the results. Also, DED caused by glaucoma medication is complicated, with a lot of different symptoms and signs, even in the same stage. Also, subjective complaints may not match up with clinical signs. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of vidian neurectomy (VN) on the ocular surface and the possibility of dry eye in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. Methods: Twelve participants were recruited in this prospective study. Prior to and after 1 and 6 months of VN, an ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire was obtained, and the Schirmer's tear test (STT), break-up time (BUT), corneal fluorescence staining (CFS) score, and Keratograph 5M were used to evaluate the ocular surface condition. Results: Two patients (16.67%) met the dry eye diagnosis criteria one month after surgery; however, their symptoms were relieved after to 3– 4 months and none of them met the diagnostic criteria for dry eye after six months. Compared with the baseline values, the STT was significantly reduced (P=0.002), while the tear meniscus height (TMH) (P=0.262), break-up time (BUT) (P=0.916), first keratographic tear film break-up time (NK-BUTfirst) (P=0.791), and average keratographic break-up time (NK-BUTave) (P=0.970) did not change significantly 6 months after surgery. The degree of STT decreased from baseline to 6-month and was related to the basic STT (ρ= 0.837, P=0.001) and sex (ρ= − 0.584, P= 0.026) but not to age, OSDI score, BUT, NK-BUTfirst, NK-BUTave or CFS (all P 0.05). Among these factors, STT at baseline was confirmed to be a predictor of a decline in tear secretion after surgery (B = 0.731, P< 0.001). Purpose: To assess changes in symptoms and ocular surface signs following a bilateral sutureless treatment of dehydrated amniotic membrane (dAM) under a specialised bandage contact lens (sBCL) in patients with moderate-to-severe dry eye disease (DED). Patients and Methods: In this prospective pre-post interventional study, 35 patients diagnosed with moderate-to-severe DED, with an Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score > 30 on current treatment, were enrolled. Assessments were conducted at baseline (day − 30), after 30 days run-in with no additional treatment (day 0 – control), and 30 days post sBCL+dAM treatment (day 30 – treatment). Intervention involved two successive bilateral 4-5 day sutureless applications of dAM (17mm diameter, with a 6 mm central aperture, Omnigen® VIEW) under an 18mm sBCL (OmniLenz®). Symptomatology and ocular signs were measured using OSDI, Dry Eye Questionnaire-5 (DEQ-5), Symptom Assessment iN Dry Eye (SANDE), and other ocular surface health indicators including non-invasive breakup time, corneal and conjunctival staining, and lid wiper epitheliopathy length and width (LWE). Results: While symptomatology remained stable during the 30-day no-treatment run-in, 1-month post-dAM treatment, there was a significant reduction in OSDI scores (from 55.8 to 32.3, p< 0.001), DEQ-5 (from 14.6 to 10.0, p< 0.001), SANDE frequency (from 65.2 to 43.6, p< 0.001), and SANDE severity (from 59.8 to 41.1, p< 0.001). Additionally, there was a notable decrease in the width of LWE staining, from grade 2 (50– 75% of the lid wiper) to grade 1 (25– 50% of the lid wiper) (p=0.011). Conclusion: A bilateral 8– 10-day treatment duration with dAM applied with sBCL demonstrated a 31 to 42% improvement in symptomatology and a decrease in ocular surface signs of mechanical stress. Objectives were to investigate whether treatment with artificial tears improved refractive precision and whether subjects with non-dry eyes had better refractive precision than subjects with dry eyes. Design: Prospective randomized controlled trial with three arms. Patients and methods: Dry eye diagnostics according to DEWS II were performed, and subjects with dry eyes were randomized to no treatment (group A1) or treatment with artificial tears two weeks prior to cataract surgery (group A2), with the third group (Group B, non-dry eyes) as a control. Keratometry was performed twice at baseline and twice after two weeks at the time of cataract surgery with three different optical biometers. The change in mean variability of keratometry (average K and magnitude of vector differences) and percentages of outliers after two weeks versus baseline were compared for group A2. The refractive and astigmatism prediction errors were calculated eight weeks after cataract surgery and compared for all three groups. Results: One hundred thirty-one subjects were available for analysis. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean variability of keratometry or percentages of outliers for group A2 from baseline to the time of cataract surgery. There was no statistically significant difference in refractive precision (absolute error and astigmatism prediction error) between any groups. Conclusion: Subjects with dry eyes (treated and non-treated) achieved the same refractive precision and percentages of outliers as subjects with non-dry eyes. Treatment with artificial tears for two weeks appeared inadequate to significantly affect variability in biometric measurements for patients with dry eyes prior to cataract surgery. Aim: To determine the prevalence of dry eye (DE) and some related factors in patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy (T2DN). Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study on 338 people, who were divided into 2 groups: 169 T2DN patients and 169 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) without renal complications as a control group. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and test fluorescein tear-film break-up time (TBUT) were done in all 338 subjects. Patients with OSDI scores < 13 and TBUT values equal to or under 10 seconds were diagnosed with dry eye. Results: The prevalence of DE in T2DN patients was significantly higher than T2DM group (55.6% versus 37.3%). The T2DN groups with dry eye had a median duration of DM, the proportion of hypertension, peripheral nerve complications, anemia, proportion of using insulin, and concentration of plasma glucose, HbA1C, urea, creatinine, CRP-hs significantly higher than those of T2DN without dry eye. Advanced age, high HbA1C level, and decreased eGFR were independent factors associated with dry eye in T2DN patients. Setting: Nineteen ophthalmic and optometric practices in 11 US states. Design: Multicenter, cross-over, six month extension to the SAHARA randomized, controlled trial (RCT). Included patients were those randomized to CsA in Phase 1 of the SAHARA RCT. Methods: This was the second phase of the SAHARA RCT in which, following the 6-month endpoint, all patients that had been randomized to CsA discontinued CsA and were treated with LHT and subsequently followed for an additional six months. Outcome measures at 12 months for CsA patients crossed over to LHT included TBUT, OSDI and MGSS. Results: One hundred and sixty-one patients (322 eyes) were analyzed. Mean (SD) baseline TBUT prior to CsA was 4.4 (1.2) seconds, 5.6 (2.6) at 6 months which improved to 6.6 (3.2) and 6.1 (2.8) seconds (both P < 0.001) at 9 and 12 months (3, 6 months post LHT). Mean (SD) OSDI was 50.0 (14.9) at baseline and 34.2 (21.5) after CsA. With LHT at 6 months, this improved to 30.0 (20.6) and 31.0 (19.5) at 9 and 12 months (P = 0.162 vs month 6, P < 0.0001 vs baseline). MGSS was 7.1 (3.2) at baseline, 13.3 (8.2) at the end of CsA treatment which improved to 17.4 (8.8) and 16.1 (9.0) at 9 and 12 months; both P < 0.001. Conclusion: SAHARA showed 6-month superiority of LHT to CsA in clinical signs and non-inferiority in symptom scores. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of trigeminal parasympathetic pathway (TPP) stimulation in the treatment of dry eye. A comprehensive search for randomized clinical trials was performed in seven databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, etc.) up to 28 February 2023. After screening the suitable studies, the data were extracted and transformed as necessary. Data synthesis and analysis were performed using Review Manager 5.4, and the risk of bias and quality of evidence were evaluated with the recommended tools. Fourteen studies enrolling 1714 patients with two methods (electrical and chemical) of TPP stimulation were included. Overall findings indicate that TPP stimulation was effective in reducing subjective symptom score (standardized mean difference [SMD], -0.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.63 to -0.28), corneal fluorescence staining (mean difference [MD], -0.78; 95% CI, -1.39 to -0.18), goblet cell area (MD, -32.10; 95% CI, -54.58 to -9.62) and perimeter (MD, -5.90; 95% CI, -10.27 to -1.53), and increasing Schirmer's test score (SMD, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.65 to 1.31) and tear film break-up time (SMD, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.19 to 0.95). Compared to inactive or low-activity stimulation controls, it has a higher incidence of adverse events. Therefore, TPP stimulation may be an effective treatment for dry eye, whether electrical or chemical. Adverse events are relatively mild and tolerable. Introduction: To assess the efficacy and safety of the combination of microblepharoexfoliation (MBE), intense pulse light (IPL) and meibomian gland expression (MGX) for treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Methods: This was a prospective, parallel-control trial conducted from April 2022 to January 2023. Participants were assigned to receive either three sessions of MBE-IPL-MGX treatment and home-based therapy (treatment group) or home-based therapy alone (control group). Outcome measures were assessed at baseline and after 2-month follow-up. Results: Seventy eyes of 70 patients were enrolled. MBE-IPL-MGX treatment achieved better improvements than home-based therapy in ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and symptom assessment in dry eye (SANDE) scores, noninvasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT), lipid layer grade (LLG), loss area meibomian gland (LAMG) and meibomian gland yielding secretion score (MGYSS). The mean differences between the two groups were as follows: OSDI (– 11.23 ± 4.68 points, P < 0.001), SANDE (– 24.63 ± 13.41 points, P < 0.001), NIBUT (1.3 ± 1.57 s, P = 0.033), LLG (0.4 ± 0.04 points, P = 0.003), LAMG (– 2.85 ± 1.69%, P = 0.023) and MGYSS (7.5 ± 2.32 points, P < 0.001). In addition, the increment (Δ) of MGYSS after MBE-IPL-MGX treatment was significantly higher in MGD grades 2 and 3 (all P < 0.001). Conclusions: MBE-IPL-MGX treatment is an effective and well-tolerated procedure that improves dry eye symptoms and signs as well as meibomian gland secretions in patients with MGD. Dry eye disease (DED) is associated with ocular hyperosmolarity and inflammation. The marketed topical eye drops for DED treatment often lack bioavailability and precorneal residence time. In this study, we investigated catechol-functionalized polyzwitterion p(MPC-co-DMA), composed of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) monomers, as potential topical nanotherapeutics for DED. The copolymers were synthesized via random free-radical copolymerization, producing different proportions of catecholic functionalization. All as-prepared polymer compositions displayed good ocular biocompatibility. At a feeding ratio of 1:1, p(MPC1-co-DMA1) can facilitate a robust mucoadhesion via Michael addition and/or Schiff base reaction, thus prolonging ocular residence time after 4 days of topical instillation. The hydration lubrication of MPC and radical-scavenging DMA endow the nano-agent to ease tear-film hyperosmolarity and corneal inflammation. A single dose of p(MPC1-co-DMA1) (1 mg/mL) after 4 days post-instillation can protect the cornea against reactive oxygen species, inhibiting cell apoptosis and the over-expression of pro-inflammatory factors (IL-6 and TNF-α). In clinical assessment, DED-induced rabbit eyes receiving p(MPC1-co-DMA1) could increase lacrimal fluid secretion by 5-fold higher than cyclosporine A. The catechol-functionalized polyzwitterion with enhanced lubricity, mucoadhesion, and anti-oxidation/anti-inflammation properties has shown high promise as a bioactive eye drop formulation for treating DED. Purpose: At present, drug treatments are composing the majority of dry eye therapies. However, considering the side effects of drugs, there has been increasing interest in novel non-drug treatment options, and these new treatments have been researching ways of tear production. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of chewing gum on tear-meniscus parameters and blinking rate with objective and quantitative methods. Methods: Sixty eyes of 30 healthy volunteers' tear-meniscus height (TMH), tear-meniscus depth (TMD), and tear-meniscus area (TMA) were acquired with anterior segment-optical coherence tomography. Tear-meniscus measurements were performed before and during chewing gum; at 15 and 30 min. Blinking rates were also recorded both before and during chewing gum for 5 min. Results: TMH, TMD, and TMA values at 15 and 30 min of chewing gum were significantly higher than those values before chewing gum (p<0.001). TMH, TMD, and TMA values at 15 min of chewing gum were similar to those values at 30 min of chewing gum (p>0.05). Blinking rate during chewing gum was significantly higher than that value before chewing gum (p<0.001). Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this was the first study demonstrating that chewing gum increased tear-meniscus parameters and blinking rate at acute phase of chewing with objective, quantitative, and non-invasive methods. Chewing gum is cheap, sustainable, and easy to reach. In addition, it is not a drug, and there is no risk of drug-related side effects. There is an increasing need for an objective grading system to evaluate the severity of dry eye disease (DED). In this study, a fully automated deep learning-based system for the assessment of DED severity was developed. Corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) images of DED patients from one hospital for system development (n = 1400) and from another hospital for external validation (n = 94) were collected. Three experts graded the CFS images using NEI scale, and the median value was used as ground truth. The system was developed in three steps: (1) corneal segmentation, (2) CFS candidate region classification, and (3) estimation of NEI grades by CFS density map generation. Also, two images taken on different days in 50 eyes (100 images) were compared to evaluate the probability of improvement or deterioration. The Dice coefficient of the segmentation model was 0.962. The correlation between the system and the ground truth data was 0.868 (p<0.001) and 0.863 (p<0.001) for the internal and external validation datasets, respectively. The agreement rate for improvement or deterioration was 88% (44/50). In the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA), dry eye disease (DED) is often misdiagnosed or overlooked. This review summarizes a series of conversations with ophthalmologists in the region around a variety of climatic, lifestyle, and iatrogenic factors that contribute to specific features of DED in the MENA region. These considerations are further classified by patient lifestyle and surgical choices. All statements are based on discussions and formal voting to achieve consensus over three meetings. Overall, a deeper understanding of the disease characteristics of DED specific to MENA can better guide local eyecare practitioners on appropriate management and follow-up care. Additionally, population-based studies and patient and physician education on ocular surface diseases, together with the use of culturally appropriate and language-specific questionnaires can help ease the public health burden of DED in this region. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of using a combination of antibiotic and corticosteroid eye drops to using the same combination in addition to sodium hyaluronate eye drops. Patients and Methods: This study included patients who underwent phacoemulsification for age-related cataract and presented to the ophthalmology department or outpatient clinic of the two hospitals in the study with DED during the period from January 2020 to January 2023. The study involved a two-pronged approach in which we retrospectively analyzed the prospectively maintained data of the patients and prospectively called the patients for an evaluation of the dry eye impact on vision-related function. The study patients were recruited from two hospitals. During the study period, patients who were treated with a combination of antibiotic and corticosteroid eye drops were enrolled in Group A, and those who were treated with the same combination with sodium hyaluronate eye drops were enrolled in Group B. Results: The present study included 143 patients with post-phacoemulsification DED. Group A included 70 patients, and Group B included 73 patients. There was statistically significant improvement 4 weeks after treatment (p < 0.05) in the two groups. Comparing the two groups showed statistically significant improvements in group B compared to group A (p < 0.05). Assessment of the overall efficacy outcome revealed a statistically significant high percentage of cure (35.6% vs 1.4%) and high effectiveness (42.5% vs 13.6%) and a low percentage of effectiveness (21.9% vs 74.3%) and ineffectiveness (0.0% vs 5.7%) in Group B compared to Group A (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Combining sodium hyaluronate eye drops with tobramycin and dexamethasone eye drops yielded obviously better efficacy outcomes compared to using tobramycin and dexamethasone eye drops alone. Introduction: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Quantum Molecular Resonance (QMR) treatment in patients with severe dry eye disease (DED), as well as its effects on aqueous-deficient (ADDE), evaporative (EDE), and mixed (MDE) dry eye. Methods: In this prospective, interventional study, 81 patients were randomly allocated to received four treatment sessions of QMR at 1-week intervals (Rexon-Eye®, Resono Ophthalmic, Trieste, Italy) (QRM group) or tear substitute four times daily, containing 0.15% sodium hyaluronate and 3% trehalose (Thealoz Duo®, Thea Pharma, France) (SH-TH group). Outcome measures included ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, tear meniscus height (TMH), tear breakup time (TBUT), non-invasive breakup time (NIBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), lipid layer thickness (LLT), tear film osmolarity (OSM), and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) grade, which were assessed at baseline and 1-month and 3-month follow-up. Results: The QMR group achieved better improvements than the SH-TH group in OSDI and SANDE questionnaires, NIBUT, LLT, and CFS. The mean differences between the groups were as follows: OSDI (− 12.4 ± 0.25 points, P = 0.01), SANDE (10.6 ± 1.7 points, P = 0.01), NIBUT (2 ± 0.25 s, P = 0.01), LLT (18.7 ± 0.7 nm, P = 0.01), and CFS (1.2 ± 0.1 points, P = 0.02). In subgroups analysis, QMR treatment demonstrated a beneficial role to improve DED symptoms and signs in ADDE, EDE, and MDE. Conclusion: QMR is an effective and well-tolerated treatment that seems to improve DED symptoms and signs in patients with severe DED. However, further studies are needed to confirm this. Introduction: The study aimed to evaluate multi-symptom relief of dry eye manifestations with the use of propylene glycol-hydroxypropyl-guar (PG-HPG) nanoemulsion lubricant eye drops, among subjects with dry eye disease (DED). Methods: This was a post-marketing, prospective, single-arm study conducted in the USA. Subjects aged ≥ 18 years, with tear breakup time (TBUT) ≤ 10 s for both eyes, dry eye questionnaire-5 (DEQ-5) "watery eyes" symptom score 1–4, symptoms of burning/stinging, sore and tired eyes as determined by impact of dry eye on everyday living—symptom bother (IDEEL-SB) questionnaire, and IDEEL-SB score 16–65 were included. Subjects were required to complete IDEEL-SB and DEQ-5 at days 0, 14 ± 2, and 28 ± 2, and self-administer one drop of PG-HPG four times daily for 28 ± 2 days. Primary endpoints were change from baseline at day 28 in symptoms of sore, stinging/burning, and tired eyes on IDEEL-SB; and symptom of watery eyes on DEQ-5. Other endpoints evaluated were corneal staining and TBUT at baseline and day 28 ± 2; symptom relief (5-point Likert scale) at day 28 ± 2, and safety. Results: Of 119 subjects enrolled, 95 completed the study (mean ± SD age 61.2 ± 13.0 years; female 69.5%). Mean IDEEL-SB scores reduced significantly from baseline at day 28 for symptoms of aching/sore eyes (change from baseline − 1.0 ± 1.1), burning/stinging eyes (change from baseline − 1.1 ± 0.9), and tired eyes (change from baseline − 1.1 ± 1.0) (all p < 0.0001). Mean DEQ-5 score for watery eye symptoms significantly reduced from baseline at day 28 (change from baseline − 0.9 ± 1.0, p < 0.0001). Corneal staining at day 28 was comparable to baseline. TBUT improved from baseline to day 28. On a Likert scale, more than 50% of subjects reported relief from symptoms of sore, stinging, and burning eyes. Three (3.1%) subjects reported treatment-emergent adverse events (non-ocular). Conclusions: PG-HPG nanoemulsion lubricant eye drops significantly improved multiple dry eye symptoms in subjects with DED over 28 days, with no new safety concerns. A new non-ablative treatment called Jett Plasma Lift Medical, originally used in dermatology and aesthetics, has been extended to ophthalmology for the treatment of dry eye disease (DED), blepharitis, and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The treatment uses plasma emission to change the polarity of cell membranes, resulting in increased permeability of nutrients and an anti-inflammatory effect. A clinical trial showed a 97.4% improvement in the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) among patients who received four treatments over four weeks. Background: Dry eye is one of the most common ophthalmic conditions and can significantly impact quality of life. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a major cause of evaporative dry eye. We sought to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence and incidence of dry eye and MGD in Central and South America and to identify factors associated with disease burden. Methods: Data sources Ovid MEDLINE and Embase. Study selection: A search conducted on August 16, 2021, identified studies published between January 1, 2010, and August 16, 2021, with no restrictions regarding participant age or language of publication. Case reports, case series, case–control studies, and interventional studies were excluded. Data extraction and synthesis: The review was based on a protocol registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021256934). Risk of bias was assessed in duplicate using a risk of bias tool designed for the purposes of descriptive epidemiological studies. Data were extracted by one investigator and verified by another for accuracy. Prevalence of dry eye and MGD were grouped based on study participant characteristics. Main outcomes and measures: Prevalence and incidence of dry eye and MGD in Central and South America. Summary estimates from meta-analysis with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Fourteen studies (11,594 total participants) were included. The population prevalence of dry eye was 13% (95% CI, 12%-14%) in Brazil and 41% (95% CI, 39%-44%) in Mexico based on one study each. Meta-analyses suggested that dry eye prevalence was 70% among indoor workers (95% CI, 56%-80%; I2, 82%; 3 studies), 71% among students (95% CI, 65%-77%; I2, 92%; 3 studies), and 83% in general ophthalmology clinics (95% CI, 77%-88%; I2, 88%; 2 studies). MGD prevalence ranged from 23% among indoor workers (95% CI, 16%-31%; 1 study) to 68% in general ophthalmology clinics (95% CI, 62%-72%; 1 study). No studies reported incidence of dry eye or MGD. Conclusions: This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated considerable variation in the published prevalence of dry eye and MGD among the general population and subpopulations in Central and South America. To evaluate the change of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and ascorbic acid (AA) between femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS‐LASIK) and laser‐assisted lenticule extraction (LALEX). A prospective non‐randomized study was conducted, and 33 and 75 eyes that had undergone FS‐LASIK or LALEX surgeries were enrolled, respectively. The tear films near corneal incisions were collected, and the concentrations of TAC and AA were determined. The generalized linear mixed model was adopted to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) of TAC and AA between the two groups. The AA reduction was significant 1 month after the LALEX and FS‐LASIK procedures (both p < 0.05), and the decrement in AA level was significantly larger in the FS‐LASIK group compared to the LALEX group (p = 0.0002). In the subgroup analysis, the LALEX group demonstrated a lower decrement in TAC level in the individuals with dry eye disease (DED) than the FS‐LASIK group (p = 0.0424), and the LALEX group demonstrated a significantly lower AA decrement in the participants with high myopia (p = 0.0165) and DED (p = 0.0043). Background: This study aims to assess how Romanian medical students suffer from dry eye disease symptoms, establish the prevalence and severity of dry eye (DE) symptoms and identify potential risk factors. Methods: An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted on students from "Carol Davila" University of Medicine, Romania, after the final examination period of July 2022. The OSDI score (Ocular Surface Disease Index©) was applied in an online survey. The study adopted the standards used by other authors, who defined symptomatic DED as an OSDI score greater than 12. The chi-square test was used to establish statistical significance at a cutoff value of p < 0.05. The predictive model was created using linear logistic regression analysis. The goodness of fit of the logistic regression model was assessed using the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. When the severity outcome had a nominal categorical form, multinomial regression analysis with normal subjects as a reference was performed. The distribution of the severe type of symptomatology across sex categories and years of study was analyzed using a nonparametric test (Independent-Samples Kruskal-Wallis Test). Results: A total of 274 answers were received from 81.4% females and 18.6% males with a response rate of 35.58%. The mean age was 22.7 years ± 1.66 with an age range between 20 and 25 years old. Using the OSDI score, we established that the overall prevalence of DE symptoms was 83.6% (95%CI: 79.6%, 88%), with an 85.2% (95%CI: 80.5%, 89.8%) prevalence in females and 76.5% (95%CI: 65%,88%) in males. The severe form of DE was the most prevalent, regardless of the study year or sex. Increased screen time (p-value < 0.05) and non-smokers (p-value < 0.05) were proven risk factors. The predictive model which includes the explanatory variables (sex, contact lens wearers, smoking, oral contraceptives, screen time) proved an 84.7% predictability for symptomatic DE and was able to better predict the dependent variable than the intercept model only (p-value < 0.05). Smoking (p = 0.002) and screen time (p = 0.009) preserved their significance in the multinominal regression as well. Conclusions: This is the first study to report the epidemiology of DE symptoms among Romanian medical students. OSDI revealed a high prevalence of symptomatic DE in medical students. Screen time, although not the only factor, likely plays a role in exacerbating the disease. This information can be used to inform healthcare policies, establish occupational health guidelines, and implement preventive measures for individuals in similar high-stress academic or professional environments.
