Purpose: Construction projects require a range of documents (e.g. drawings and specifications) prepared by built environment professionals. In recent years, there has been a perception amongst professionals that quality of documentation has declined. "Low" professional fees were cited as one of the reasons for poor quality documentation. However, most studies on the topic contained inappropriate methodologies. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to develop a conceptual methodology to comprehensively examine the relationship between fees and professional service output quality. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to evaluate the limitations of previous methodologies and identify variables in the relationship between fees and quality of professional service outputs. Findings from the SLR were used to develop a conceptual methodology to investigate the relationship between fees and quality of professional service outputs. Findings: Based on a frequency analysis of factors in the construction literature, the three main variables influencing professional service output quality were fees, coordination and amount of time available for project tasks. The SLR and shortcomings in previous studies informed the development of a conceptual methodology to examine the relationship between fees and professional service output quality. Practical implications: The conceptual methodology will assist in comprehensively investigating the effect of fees on the quality of professional service outputs. This is particularly relevant in countries where clients procure built environment professional services based on the lowest fee tendered but are concerned about quality. The methodology can establish how and to what extent "low" fees impact on professional service output quality. Industry professionals can also use variables identified in this paper to mitigate quality-related risks when producing professional service outputs. Originality/value: This paper adds to the body of knowledge by identifying variables in the relationship between fees and professional service output quality. The identified variables can be monitored and controlled by researchers during future investigations. Additionally, a conceptual methodology was proposed to assist researchers to determine the effect of fees on professional service output quality. Three-dimensional (3D) printing with earth-based mortar is still under development and faces challenges. Optimising the mortar mixture, improving structural strength, determining the relationship between the printing speed and the amount of extruded material, and ensuring long-term durability are areas that are being refined. Additionally, regulatory and certification issues must also be considered to ensure the safety and compliance of 3D printed structures. This paper presents for discussion the records, analyses, studies, and considerations regarding initial initiatives involving 3D printing with the extrusion of earth-based mortar developed at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). Through this work, it was possible to strengthen and reaffirm that 3D printing with earth-based mortar has significant potential in the construction industry and that the incorporation of dispersed kraft paper fibres from the recycling of cement bags is an excellent resource to achieve good constructability in 3D printing with earth-based mortar. This systematic literature review aims to comprehensively analyze and synthesize existing research on resource management practices within the construction sector. By examining a wide array of scholarly articles, conference papers, and industry reports, this review identifies and evaluates the various methodologies, strategies, and tools employed for effective resource management in construction projects. The review encompasses an extensive analysis of key themes, including but not limited to labor management, equipment utilization, material procurement, and technological advancements in resource optimization. It delves into the challenges faced by the construction industry concerning resource allocation, skill shortages, cost control, sustainability concerns, and the impact of unforeseen disruptions. Furthermore, this review critically assesses the implications of resource management practices on project performance, encompassing aspects such as project timelines, budget adherence, quality control, and stakeholder satisfaction. The findings from this systematic review provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of resource management practices in the construction industry. Many researchers in the construction field have explored the utilization of augmented reality (AR) and its impact on the industry. Previous studies have shown potential uses for AR in the construction industry. However, a comprehensive critical review exploring the ways in which AR supports synchronized communication is still missing. This paper aims to fill this gap by examining trends identified in the literature and by analyzing both beneficial and challenging attributes. This work was performed by collecting numerous journal and conference papers, using keywords including "augmented reality", "construction", and "synchronous communication". The papers were then categorized based on the reported attributes that were indicated to be challenges or benefits. Throughout the analysis, several benefits were consistently reported, including training, visualization, instantly sharing information, decision making, and intuitive interaction. Similarly, several challenges were consistently reported, such as difficulty in manipulation, unfriendly interface, device discomfort, and sun brightness. Regarding other attributes, such as field of view, cost, safety hazards, and hands-free mode, researchers provided divergent reports regarding whether they were beneficial or detrimental to AR communication. These findings provide valuable guidance for future researchers and practitioners, enabling them to leverage AR for synchronized communication in ways that consistently offer value. Purpose: The concept of working capital management (WCM) has been a fundamental financial accounting term that has evolved in financial theory for centuries. Given that the construction industry (CI) is financially dynamic, there is an imperative need to understand its WCM practices. The call for the industry players to adhere to efficient financial management practices as a result of a huge financing gap requires consented effort. This study aims to explore the trend of practices of WCM in the CI and elicit a broader polemic dialogue about this crucial theme. Design/methodology/approach: The source of information for the study was secondary mainly from referenced journals and international conference papers published on WCM relating to the CI. A three-step sample selection strategy was adopted to identify the range and scope of publications on WCM in the CI based on the systematic literature review method. Findings: The CI cannot boost of enough empirical WCM research to gain in-depth understanding of its practical trend. The developing economies are failing to produce insightful peer-reviewed papers on WCM to assist in bridging the infrastructural financing gap through apposite strategies. Gaining appropriate knowledge of the short-term financial operations through a conceptualization of WCM practices in the CI may lead to better strategies formulated for smooth operations. Urban digital twin is a key step to build a smart city, digital twin is an important application scenario for smart city platform, and the relationship between the two are both current research hotspots. In this paper, we will start from the demand of digital twin on smart city platform, study the architecture method and key technology of smart city platform, in this paper's platform construction method compared to the traditional construction method, reduces the difficulty of digital twin smart city construction, and also reduces the coupling degree between smart city platform modules, and use a smart city platform for engineering verification. Finally compared with the traditional smart platform construction techniques, the techniques in this paper are better than the traditional ones in terms of coupling, difficulty and cost. Through engineering verification and experimental results show that this paper on the digital twin-oriented smart city construction technology, the coupling degree of each module is the lowest, and in the development efficiency experiments, this paper by comparing with the traditional technology, the experimental development cycle compared to the traditional technology can be shortened by 61.7% of the development cycle, greatly reducing the development cost and improving the construction efficiency. Purpose: The phenomenon of delayed payment to contractors, particularly in the construction industry, is a vital one and has implications for the health of economies of both developing and developed countries. However, the knowledge of this phenomenon seems patchy and scattered. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge on the subject matter with directions for future research. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review coupled with a scientometric analysis was used to identify the main strands of delayed payment to contractor research as a basis for qualitative analysis and directions for future investigations. Findings: Current trends of delayed payment to contractor research are categorised into five broad themes, namely: causes, effects, mitigation measures, ethical and law and regulatory issues. On the basis of these themes, directions for future research are proffered. Originality/value: To the best of the authors knowledge, this is the first attempt at providing a comprehensive and an integrated knowledge on delayed payment to contractor research with pointers for further investigation and policy directions. Numerous qualitative review studies have been conducted to enhance the understanding of current research status of green buildings (GBs). Green building assessment methods (GBAMs) are crucial to the development of GBs and relevant research works has received wide attention. However, there are very few reviews to quantitively explore these studies. Therefore, this paper aims to systematically review literatures on GBAMs, and visually analyzes them through CiteSpace and HistCite. The article identified the most influential journals, contributors, representative institutions and regions. The knowledge bases of this area focus on "triple bottom line", "indicator", "building design", "life cycle costing", "life cycle sustainability assessment", "tropical climate", "building information modelling" and "Chinese green building label". Through citation analysis, "updating existing GBAMs by scheme comparison", "updating existing GBAMs by GB case analysis", "establishment of new GBAMs" and "incorporation of BIM in GBAMs" were found as the main research themes. "Design", "LCA", "model", "energy", "management", "residential buildings" and "office buildings" are high-frequency keywords. Future research directions were finally proposed as "more investigation on the other types of GBs", "incorporation of cost-related criteria", "enhancing health-related indicators" and "integrating with BIM technology". In numerous developing nations, challenges such as insufficient investment in innovation and limited capabilities for conversion impede the growth of the construction sector, thus affecting the overall economic well-being of these regions. This paper focuses on construction industry innovation (CII) and its correlation with region economic development (RED), providing valuable insights to overcome these challenges and promote sustainable economic advancement. This study references existing literature to devise an evaluation indicator system dedicated for CII and RED. It then proceeds with an empirical analysis of the integration and synergy between CII and the economic development across 31 Chinese provinces from 2012 to 2021. Furthermore, this paper employs ArcGIS and Geoda software to meticulously dissect the spatial distribution characteristics underlying this coordination. The main conclusions are succinctly summarized as follows: CII in China is intricately connected to RED, exhibiting a strong connection that diminishes from south to north. Nonetheless, the coordination level between these factors remains relatively low, with notable regional disparities, particularly from southeast to northwest. The primary obstacles to effective coordination are related to innovation input, output, and economic scale. Additionally, spatial correlation analysis demonstrates pronounced regional clustering, showing stability despite slight fluctuations over the study period. This research underscores the concept of coupling coordination between CII and RED, underpinned by scientific analytical methods. The paper investigates and assesses the contract selection procedure used in Kuwait's construction sector. The ideas and insights of engineers involved in significant Kuwaiti construction projects will be extensively considered. In the Kuwaiti building sector, various ways of choosing the contract form will be discussed. In order to gather pertinent data about the country's primary construction projects, questionnaires will be used. This methodology ensures a first-hand account of the challenges and preferences within the industry. This data will be analyzed to determine the best ways to enhance the current system utilized for Kuwaiti building contracts for the choice of contract forms and payment terms that could benefit from the inclusion of measures to guarantee those types of task delivery systems and payment terms in the country's future construction projects. This paper explores the typical contract types and payment mechanisms used in Kuwait, drawing on a thorough analysis of current literature, governmental regulations, and business practices. The Standard Forms of Contract, which offer fixed-priced payments, have become the most popular option. However, when used for extensive and technically challenging projects, this contract form's simplicity presents difficulties. Additionally, the existing system encourages contract awards based on the lowest tender, which raises questions regarding appropriateness and proportionality. The study suggests an arsenal of criteria for improving the deal selection process, with an emphasis on diverse terms of payment inside the task delivery system, in order to allay these worries. It highlights the need for a more comprehensive approach for deal selection that takes project complexity, financial constraints, and long-term project interest into account. The proposed criteria additionally include adaptability to project complexity, ensuring flexibility for challenges in large projects. Financial considerations, aligning with budgetary requirements, are crucial. The emphasis is on long-term project success, and finding a balance between simplicity and adaptability in contracts is key. Biomimicry creates designs inspired by nature and uses ecological benchmarks to assess their sustainability. It is believed that biomimicry can help society produce and consume in more sustainable ways, as well as address some of the key challenges facing the world today. However, research into the applications of and possible barriers to using biomimicry for creating more sustainable Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) projects is still limited. This paper addresses this gap by undertaking and analysing twelve semi-structured interviews with leading global experts and practitioners in the field of biomimicry as applied to the built environment industry. The study identifies substantial potential in the use of biomimicry in AEC projects, including the following: adopting circular approaches; enhancing interactions between human and natural infrastructure; optimising material and energy use; recycling and re-use of materials; reducing time and costs; plus more collaborative and interdisciplinary working. However, a wide range of multifaceted barriers also exist that are currently hindering the exploration and exploitation of this potential, including the following: lack of knowledge; insufficient research and testing at the scale of AEC projects; fragmentation, poor communication and traditional nature of the industry; perception of high risks and costs; as well as outdated and unsuitable legislation and planning processes. Purpose: The pupose of this study is to systematically review the current literature on the value stream mapping (VSM) application in the construction industry to investigate the evolution observed over time and the results obtained by adopting this tool. In addition, special attention was given to the potential of VSM in identifying loss and waste, as well as their main causes. Design/methodology/approach: The study analyses papers in literature using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses research protocol. As a result, 383 papers were initially identified, and 47 papers were selected. Findings: It was observed that the number of studies addressing this topic has been increasing over the past decade and findings related to the evolution, application and the benefits obtained from the VSM application in context of construction were presented. Additionally, the authors found that the two most cited lean wastes were waiting and defects in the production chain. The main causes of this waste and loss were also identified in this work. Practical implications: This paper contributes by presenting the applicability of VSM as a tool in the construction as found in the literature. For academics, it will be possible to clearly observe research gaps and for industry managers, to identify the main sources of waste and assess the performance of the tool's application. Originality/value: The study uses a systematic review to analyze the application of the VSM tool in the construction industry and provides guidance for future research by identifying research gaps, in addition to conducting an extensive analysis of the tool's potential in waste identification in the studied papers and their primary causes. Purpose: The construction industry (CI) is a major contributor to the gross domestic product of most economies. Yet, the industry is characterized by poorly performing projects, plagued with cost overruns, delays, with a relatively high-risk nature and marginal returns. Given that construction projects are financially dynamic, relying on highly fluctuating working capital and cash-flow requirements, there is an imperative need to understand the working capital management (WCM) of the CI. This study aims to review the extant literature on WCM in the CI to present a contemporary positional paper and engender a wider polemic debate on this crucial phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review methodology is used, using Google Scholar as the literature database. Findings: Despite the importance of this research theme, only 16 publications dedicated to the topic of WCM in the CI are identified. This is an important finding in itself and is indicative of hitherto scant research conducted. Other observations include the lack of experts examining the field, with no authors exploring the theme more than once. Subthemes of WCM are also scarce, with only the topic of the relationship between "WCM and profitability" been revisited and refined in literature; all other topics being cursory. Originality/value: This study is among pioneering papers in developing economies that have taken stock of WCM in the CI. With the development of new construction technology, increasing attention is being paid to 3D printing due to its construction efficiency as well as its sustainability. Numerous researchers have determined its benefits in cost reduction, resource savings, safety assurance, etc. Although various advantages have been identified, there are limitations and challenges in technology implementation. Especially since it is a new construction method, 3D printing construction projects will have a very different supply chain compared to traditional projects. As part of a research programme investigating the 3D printing construction supply chain in a New Zealand context, this study systematically analysed the research about 3D printing adoption and supply chain challenges in the construction sector. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was adopted as the guideline for literature selection. PRISMA is designed to assist researchers in reporting the review research focus and methodology, and examining the findings from published literature. NVivo was then adopted to code and analyse the selected publications to gather the data necessary for our study. The literature was analysed from the perspectives of the research focus, research methods, and findings. Studies about 3D printing implementation, benefits and barriers, as well as its significance are also analysed. As a result, this research found existing research gaps, including the fragmented situation of management-related research in the 3D printing construction sector, insufficient research in top management for 3D printing construction implementation, and changes to supply chain management practices in 3D printing construction projects. A decision support system demo for supply chain management is drafted in this paper, which requires further study. The research outcome highlighted the existing studies in 3D printing construction implementation and supply chain, and initiated a research topic on supply chain decision making. The result contributes to the theoretical and practical development of 3D printing technology in the construction industry. Nowadays, construction site safety accidents are frequent, and wearing safety helmets is essential to prevent head injuries caused by object collisions and falls. However, existing helmet detection algorithms have several drawbacks, including a complex structure with many parameters, high calculation volume, and poor detection of small helmets, making deployment on embedded or mobile devices difficult. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a YOLOv5-based multi-head detection safety helmet detection algorithm that is faster and more robust for detecting helmets on construction sites. By replacing the traditional DarkNet backbone network of YOLOv5s with a new backbone network composed of RepStemBlock and MG, introducing the C3STR multi-head self-attention mechanism and adding a small detection head P6 to replace the original feature pyramid network, the improved model reduces parameters by 44.1%, responds faster to inference, significantly outperforms the original model in accuracy and mAP (2.3% and 2.7% improvement). Two models are presented in this paper: a large model (YOLOv5s-hat) for optimal performance, mAP@0.5 is 0.957, and a small model (MG-YOLOv5s) for real-time detection on embedded or mobile devices. Compared to large models the lightweight model has 44% fewer parameters, mAP@0.5 of 0.954 and an Fps of 67. Overall, the proposed algorithm shows promise for improving helmet detection on construction sites, with the potential for deployment on a range of devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigating Industry 4.0 technologies and studying their impacts on various aspects of the construction industry, including stakeholders and the lifecycle, is vital to enhance novel applications of such technologies in an industry that is known as Construction 4.0. The main objective of the current state-of-the-art review is to provide a comprehensive literature review on three widely used Industry 4.0 technologies, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Blockchain, and LiDAR, which have strong potential to promote and optimize different activities of the project, and also, the integration of them can greatly impact the construction industry in the whole project lifecycle. A bibliometric analysis of keyword co-occurrence and citations revealed a significant number of publications from 2014 to 2023 investigating the selected technologies. Recent trends indicate that the majority of papers have considered the selected technologies in the integration with each other. However, a specific gap exists in the literature regarding the interactions and potential synergies among these technologies. This gap limits the understanding of how these integrations can address challenges unique to the construction industry and hinders the development of comprehensive solutions. The review has been analyzed and discussed in reference to the type of article, single or multi technologies, the lifecycle, and their applications. The study showed that the integration of BIM, Blockchain, and LiDAR, as a recent trend and as a beneficial solution to automate the whole construction process, has considerable capacities to improve the productivity of the construction industry. Finally, some application areas for the integration of these three technologies are concluded and are suggested, and therefore, an advantageous reference has been provided for scholars to plan their future research in this sector. Purpose: In recent years, augmented reality (AR) has shown its potential to assist various construction activities. Its use commonly requires additional refinement to be integrated into the building information modeling (BIM) process. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated AR implementation in BIM-enabled projects because of numerous challenges related to its implementation. This study aims to investigate the implementation of AR in construction and identify the critical mechanisms for implementing BIM-AR successfully. Design/methodology/approach: A mixed methodology was adopted for this study. First, this work presents a bibliometric analysis covering articles obtained from Scopus database published between 2000 and 2022. A sample size of 65 research papers pertinent to AR in construction was analyzed using VOSviewer software. Second, a participatory case study was conducted for a BIM-enabled project in China to gain insight into how BIM-AR implementation in construction is achieved. Findings: The findings from the bibliometric analysis show an increasing interest in AR research within construction. The results indicate that AR research focuses on four clusters: real-time communication, project management, construction activities and education. Findings from the case study provide an empirical experience of AR application scenarios in a BIM-enabled project. Concomitantly, 15 critical success factors that influence BIM-AR implementation were finally identified and demonstrated. Originality/value: This study provides a rich insight into the understanding and awareness of implementing AR. First, the findings are beneficial to construction practitioners and researchers because they provide a concentrated perspective of AR for emerging activities in the construction industry. Second, the results obtained from the case study could provide a useful guide for effectively implementing AR in a BIM-enabled construction project. Purpose: Extended reality (XR) is an emerging technology, with its popularity rising in different industry sectors, where its application has been recently considered in construction safety. This study aims to investigate the applications of XR technologies in the safety of construction through projects lifecycle perspective. Design/methodology/approach: Scientometric analysis was conducted to discover trends, keywords, contribution of countries and publication outlets in the literature. The content analysis was applied to categorize previous studies into three groups concerning the phase of lifecycle in which they used XR. Findings: Results of the content analysis showed that the application of XR in the construction safety is mostly covered in two areas, namely, safety training and risk management. It was found that virtual reality was the most used XR tool with most of its application dedicated to safety training in the design phase. The amount of research on the application of augmented reality and mixed reality in safety training, and risk management in all phases of lifecycle is still insignificant. Finally, this study proposed three main areas for using the XR technologies regarding the safety issues in future research, namely, control of safety regulations and safety coordination in construction phase, and safety reports in the operation phase. With the great development of the construction industry, prefabricated building components have been greatly developed. To study the compressive performance of the new wallboard, the axial compression performance test of six full-scale new lattice wallboards was carried out in this paper. The failure mode, axial pressure-displacement relationship curve, axial compression bearing capacity, and axial pressure-strain relationship of the wallboard were obtained through the experiments. This reveals the influence of the thickness of the concrete surface and the number of ribs on the performance of the wallboard. The test results show that the ultimate bearing capacity of the specimen increases with the increase of the thickness of the concrete surface layer with the same number of ribs. Specimen DW -30 increased by 4% over DW -20 and DW -50 increased by 41.6% over DW -30. The ultimate bearing capacity of the three-ribbed specimens was higher than that of the two-ribbed specimens for the same concrete face thickness, about 1.11 times that of the two-ribbed specimens. The concrete facing thickness and the number of ribs have a restraining effect on the deformation of the wallboard. Additionally, the calculation formula of axial bearing capacity of type latticed wallboard considering the influence of eccentric compression was proposed, which can provide a reference for engineering calculation. Climate change is a significant challenge in today's world. The construction industry is one of the most energy-intensive and raw material-depleting sectors worldwide. Legal regulations, such as laws, building codes, and alternative governance, are effective ways to help mitigate climate change risks. Most of the research focuses on either one country's policies in the construction industry towards climate change or one type of regulation across various countries. Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore and compare various kinds of regulations, namely policies and laws, green codes, and green building rating systems, in three countries: Egypt, the UAE, and the United States, representing different country profiles from different continents. Sources from credible journal papers, conference proceedings, and theses dissertations were used to explore the most recent practices in these countries. It was found that Egypt is the least effective country in enforcing actions towards the climate crisis. There is a gap between the UAE's actions and the nationally determined contribution target. Federal setbacks hinders the widespread adoption of green practices in the United States. Therefore, the key to effective approaches to combating climate change is enforcing inclusive laws, including all sustainability pillars, and having inclusive nationwide emissions targets in all sectors. Purpose: The use of improvement tools in the construction sector has shown to be an important determinant of quality. Companies endeavoring to enhance their daily practices require assistance, evidence, standards, frameworks and quantitative models from existing experts to help them set out for the road. This paper is aimed to assist construction managers in the selection of tools to increase customer satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach: This piece of research is based on the results of a previous empirical study on the use, within a sample of Mexican firms, of a set of more than 30 tools. It then proposes a Bayesian network (BN) to select them. By analyzing the variables under study, it is possible to establish their interaction and dependencies. The resultant BN comprises 24 nodes, and it is useful for choosing some tools that help to increase customer satisfaction. Findings: Customers and their needs now have become more complicated and harder to meet than in the past. Then, the use of improvement tools that put quality at the heart of the management strategies is crucial for achieving customer satisfaction. In order to reduce prices, keep product quality and meet delivery times, these tools should be used on a daily basis. Along this line of thought, the overall results from the hypothetical scenarios explored in this were positive, reflecting the relevance of the proposed model. In particular, the use of tools for gathering customer needs, the utilization of technology and the implementation of a quality department are relevant for increasing customer satisfaction in the sector. Research limitations/implications: The sample size could be further expanded. The customer satisfaction dimensions could be enhanced. Practical implications: While the sample in which the investigation is based could be expanded along with the number of variables and their states, the BN can help practitioners in the global construction industry to improve their quality practices, to foster loyalty and to grow revenues. Originality/value: Most of the research reported in the area of continuous improvement in construction focuses on qualitative considerations, and it is still scarce in terms of developing mathematical models for selecting existing tools and, ultimately, satisfying customer's requirements. This study conducts a literature review to analyse the incorporation of Industry 4.0 in the construction sector, known as Construction 4.0, in developing countries. This study utilises an effective technique, encompassing academic databases, journals, and conference proceedings, to carefully examine relevant studies published with respect to developing countries. The primary areas of emphasis involve the definition of Construction 4.0. The technologies of execution include six cutting-edge technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, 3D printing, UAVs, and artificial intelligence in construction procedures. This analysis also explores the awareness and understanding of Industry 4.0 in the construction sector (Construction 4.0) in developing countries before identifying where it is being applied therein. Furthermore, obstacles that impede the mainstream adoption in developing countries are identified, including but not limited to such things as insufficient technological infrastructure, skill deficiencies, and budgetary limitations. This review consolidates various studies to provide a thorough comprehension of the present condition of Construction 4.0 in developing nations. To promote sustainable economic development in the Belt and Road region of China, reducing carbon emissions is essential. The construction industry is a major contributor to carbon emissions in China. Therefore, studying the dynamic evolution of carbon emissions from the construction industry in this region and its driving factors is of great significance for effectively controlling emissions and achieving China’s carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets. This paper first employs the Slope model, Moran’s I index, and standard deviation ellipse to reveal the spatial-temporal characteristics of carbon emissions from the construction industry, and then applies the geographical detector model to identify the main driving factors of carbon emissions. The results indicate that: (1) From 2006 to 2021, the total carbon emissions showed a fluctuating growth trend, and there were significant differences in emissions among different regions. (2) Carbon emissions in most provinces exhibited a moderate growth trend, and there was significant spatial correlation and aggregation of inter-provincial emissions. Regional carbon emissions from 2006 to 2021 showed a spatial distribution pattern from northeast to southwest, with a weakening trend, and the center of gravity mainly distributed in the east of the region. (3) Labor input, urbanization rate, total output value of the construction industry, degree of opening up, and energy intensity are the main factors influencing the spatial heterogeneity of carbon emissions from the construction industry, and the majority of the interaction types between factors were bivariate enhancement. Purpose: The industrial revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) signifies technological advancements and digitalization. The fragmented and labour-intensive nature of the construction industry inherently possesses difficulties for IR4.0 adoption compared to other industries. This paper aims to investigate the perspectives of quantity surveying students on the challenges of IR4.0 implementation in the construction industry. Design/methodology/approach: A questionnaire survey were distributed to a population of 191 quantity surveying students, with 96 valid responses returned. Descriptive statistics and factor analysis were employed to analyse the collected data. Findings: Factor analysis revealed eight components as the key challenges for IR4.0 implementation, which revolved around resistance to change, data security issues, etc. Practical implications: The findings could provide a guideline to higher education institutions on certain IR4.0-related areas to be incorporated into the syllabus, in ensuring that the students are equipped with such skills and knowledge, in meeting market demands. The construction stakeholders' could look into the identified challenges for strategizing the organizations in moving towards IR4.0 adoption. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to investigate quantity surveying students' perspectives on the challenges of IR4.0 implementation in the construction industry by employing factor analysis method. Purpose: Construction material management is an important process in supporting construction operations that affect project performance. Previous studies attempt to identify factors influencing material management in different stages such as procurement, transportation and utilization. However, they lack a model to explain the relationship between influential factors and the effectiveness of material management. Therefore, this study aims to validate the variables and key factors influencing the effectiveness of material management processes. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 42 variables were reviewed from literature in different stages of material management process. Survey questionnaires were used to collect data about participants' perceptions on these variables. The respondents were 200 project engineers and project managers from construction sites and offices in Vietnam. Then factor analysis techniques were undertaken to validate the structure of factor groups. Two methods of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were, respectively, performed to evaluate and verify the model's fit. Findings: Factors influencing the effectiveness of material management were grouped into nine main factors, which are procurement issues, site conditions, planning and handling on site, industrial environments, contractual issues, quality control, suppliers and manufacturers' issues, transportation in and out site and security on site. Practical implications: The paper has several implications for theory and methodology related to material management. It features influential factors in association with the material management effectiveness. Therefore, senior managers can more fully understand the errors in their works and propose timely solutions to limit the unwanted risks. Purpose: This paper aims to present the result of an assessment of the potential effect of building information modelling (BIM) adoption on the reduction of construction waste (CW) from a developing country's perspective. This was done with a view to reducing the waste generated in construction projects particularly at the design and pre-contract stages. Design/methodology/approach: The study adopted a post-positivism philosophical approach, which informed the use of a quantitative research design and a questionnaire as instrument for data collection. The data gathered from construction professionals in the Nigeria construction industry were analysed using an array of statistical tools such as frequency, percentage, Kruskal–Wallis H-test, Kendall's coefficient of concordance, chi-square and exploratory factors analysis. Findings: The study revealed five major groups of factors causing CW at the design and pre-contract stages that can be avoided or minimised through BIM implementation. These are; (1) errors in design and documentation, (2) specification and quality factors, (3) estimating and site condition factors, (4) planning of work factors and (5) procurement related factors. Practical implications: The findings of the study offer practical insight for industry participants on the need for BIM implementation to reduce CW by identifying the diverse areas responsible for these waste generation. Originality/value: While there has been significant literature on BIM implementation, contributions on the effect of this technology in reducing waste generation particular at the design and pre-contract stages in developing countries has been almost non-existent. The centralized smoke exhaust system of shield tunnel is an important determinant for tunnel fire safety, and the use of different design parameters of the tunnel smoke exhaust system will affect the smoke exhaust effect in the tunnel, and the influence of different design parameters on the smoke exhaust effect and temperature attenuation of the tunnel can help engineers in designing a more effective centralized smoke exhaust system for the tunnel. In this paper, the Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) is utilized to examine smoke exhaust vent settings for a centralized exhaust system in shield tunnel with both flat and sloped conditions, including slopes of +4.5% and −4.5%, under a 30 MW fire power with a 150 m/s smoke exhaust rate. The results suggest that maintaining a vent spacing of 60 m and a vent size of 4.0 m × 1.5 m is a reasonable configuration for centralized smoke exhaust systems in both flat and slope shield tunnels. This choice helps minimize construction costs and prevent excessive smoke accumulation. It also promotes favorable conditions for maintaining temperature distribution at 2-m height, visibility, smoke spread distance, and temperature below the ceiling, all below the threshold values, while ensuring high smoke extraction efficiency. However, in the slope section, the chimney effect can disrupt exhaust efficiency, visibility, ceiling temperature, and temperature distribution at a height of 2 m. Employing different opening methods, such as having 2 vents up and 4 vents down in a +4.5% slope and 4 vents up and 2 vents down in a −4.5% slope, can help mitigate these effects. Furthermore, the temperature decay formula for shield tunnels follows a bi-exponential decay pattern, and different design parameters of centralized smoke exhaust systems have minimal effects on temperature decay in shield tunnels. With the proposal of the "One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative", the Chinese architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has increasingly been exploring the overseas markets. This paper adopted the propensity score matching and difference-in-differences (PSM-DID) method to evaluate the impact of the OBOR Initiative on Chinese international contractors and consulting firms, respectively. The results shows that the OBOR Initiative significantly stimulated the overseas market development of contractors, whereas it had no positive impact on consulting firms. The results may provide comprehensive guidance for industry practitioners, policymakers, and scholars to correctly understand the different characteristics of international contractors and consulting firms, thereby formulating a targeted development strategy. This paper identifies the key factors that influence low bidding practices, dissects their long-term repercussions, and proposes potential mitigation strategies. By providing insights into the challenges posed by low bidding practices, this paper aims to contribute to informed decisionmaking and encourage a shift towards more balanced and sustainable construction practices in Nepal. Furthermore, this paper seeks to establish a solid foundation for a broader knowledge base, guiding future decisions and discourse towards the establishment of balanced and ethical bidding practices in the Nepalese construction industry. The construction industry makes a significant contribution to global CO2 emissions. Material extraction, processing, and demolition account for most of its environmental impact. As a response, there is an increasing interest in developing and implementing innovative biomaterials that support a circular economy, such as mycelium-based composites. The mycelium is the network of hyphae of fungi. Mycelium-based composites are renewable and biodegradable biomaterials obtained by ceasing mycelial growth on organic substrates, including agricultural waste. Cultivating mycelium-based composites within molds, however, is often wasteful, especially if molds are not reusable or recyclable. Shaping mycelium-based composites using 3D printing can minimize mold waste while allowing intricate forms to be fabricated. In this research, we explore the use of waste cardboard as a substrate for cultivating mycelium-based composites and the development of extrudable mixtures and workflows for 3D-printing mycelium-based components. In this paper, existing research on the use of mycelium-based material in recent 3D printing efforts was reviewed. This review is followed by the MycoPrint experiments that we conducted, and we focus on the main challenges that we faced (i.e., contamination) and the ways in which we addressed them. The results of this research demonstrate the feasibility of using waste cardboard as a substrate for cultivating mycelia and the potential for developing extrudable mixtures and workflows for 3D-printing mycelium-based components. A carbon emission factor (CEF) database is required for the basis of carbon emission calculation in construction projects. However, the default values for existing CEF databases cannot cover the complex resources involved in a construction project. Therefore, this paper proposes a three-step method to guide the establishment of an extensible CEF database for the construction industry, including (1) data collection and parser, (2) data extension, and (3) data encoding and storage. The data extension mechanisms provide the supply chain perspective considering temporal issues and the accounting perspective to streamline the process. Aiming to address the lack of a comprehensive CEF database for the construction industry in China, this paper uses this method to establish a carbon emission factor database for the Chinese construction industry (CEFD for CCI). This database is open and free with 646 CEFs, including five parts: energy, human, material, machinery, and greenspace. This paper provides a way for developing and less developed countries to establish an expandable CEF database, which benefits the parser, extension, encoding, and storage of new resources, as well as computer access. The construction industry is a challenging field for the application of robots. In particular, bridge construction, which involves many tasks at great heights, makes it difficult to implement robots. To construct a bridge, it is necessary to build numerous piers that can support the bridge deck. Pier construction involves a series of tasks including rebar connection, formwork installation, concrete pouring, formwork dismantling, and formwork reinstallation. These activities require working at heights, presenting a significant risk of falls. If bridge construction could be performed remotely using robots instead of relying on human labor, it would greatly contribute to the safety of bridge construction. This paper proposes a multi-robot system capable of remote operation and automation for rebar structure connection, concrete pouring, and concrete vibrating tasks in pier construction. The proposed multi-robot system for pier construction is composed of three robot systems. Each robot system consists of a robot arm mounted on a mobile robot that can move along rails. And to apply the proposed system to a construction site, it is essential to implement a compliance control algorithm that adapts to external forces. In this paper, we propose an admittance control that takes into account the weight of the tool for the compliance control of the proposed robot, which performs tasks by switching between various construction tools of different weights. Furthermore, we propose a synchronization control method for the multi-robot system to connect reinforcing structures. We validated the proposed algorithm through simulation. Building and other construction assets constitute a significant part of a country's physical and economic infrastructure. According to several writers, the knowledge of reliable data of building and other construction assets of a specific country or region is a crucial element for the long-term management of these assets. Built capital stock statistics at the national or international levels have been available for most countries of the world, both developed and less developed ones, for some time, but construction infrastructure stock statistics at the disaggregated level are very scarce, even for most developed countries. Furthermore, the methodologies to produce the estimates of built capital stock, at the international level, do not consider countries' specificities. This paper discusses the methodologic issues for producing construction infrastructure stock statistics for Cape Verde, and makes estimates for the period 1980-2019. The paper outlines the Perpetual Inventory Method (PIM) used to produce capital estimation, data employed, and the assumptions made to estimate missing data. The paper analyses the level of the construction infrastructure stock estimates for Cape Verde, as well as their impact on the development pattern of the country's construction industry, and suggests how further studies can enhance our comprehension of the relationship between construction investment and economic growth and development. As a project construction organization model, whole-process engineering consulting (WPEC) is currently being promoted in China's engineering consulting industry. However, various factors create numerous obstacles that hinder this model's effective promotion and application. One essential task is to deeply analyze the transmission mechanism of the influencing factors in the promotion and application of WPEC, and explore effective pathways for promoting and applying this model. This paper systematically organizes and summarizes 10 primary influencing factors and 38 secondary influencing factors for promoting WPEC. Using the complex network analysis method, a network of influencing factors for promoting WPEC, a network structure, and motif analyses are conducted. The results show that the influencing factors have a complex transmission mechanism, and complex network analysis can reveal the laws of their construction and their causes.
