This work presents a reasonable strategy of optimizing the N : P molar ratio of municipal wastewater to simultaneously restore N‐NH4+ and P‐PO43− via struvite precipitation employing biochar modified with magnesium as the seeding material. The phosphate removal efficiency and ammonium removal efficiency could reach up to 71 % and 100 %, respectively. The remaining phosphate can be restored by other techniques for low phosphate concentration input, such as electrocoagulation. The XRD patterns indicate the appearance of struvite with high nutrient contents including Mg, N and P in the resulting precipitate, suggesting its potential agricultural application. The biochar from rice husk and rice straw modified with MgCl2 solution via a simple procedure could be used as a new seeding material in struvite precipitation to simultaneously restore phosphate and ammonium from wastewater. It has been found that modifying with MgCl2 concentration of 0.5 M and 1 M were enough to improve 14.7 % and 26.5 % of the phosphate removal efficiencies of rice straw‐based and rice husk‐based biochar, respectively. Along with the highly compatible of the post‐precipitated product with soil amendment, the magnesium modified biochars from rice husk and rice straw were highly suitable for enhancing the restoration of phosphate and ammonium via struvite precipitation. Biochar (BC), a carbon‐dense substance created through the pyrolysis of organic biomass, has garnered considerable interest as a promising option for sustainable mitigation methods. A comprehensive examination of the diverse attributes of BC and its implications for addressing contemporary environmental issues while fostering sustainable practices is compiled in this review. The synthesis techniques and structural attributes of BC are scrutinized initially, emphasizing its remarkable features such as broad surface area, porosity, and active sites. These characteristics of BC are conducive to myriad environmental applications, including pollutant remediation, soil health enhancement, and carbon sequestration. Subsequently, this review delves into the mechanisms underlying BC's effectiveness in environmental remediation. BC exhibits augmented adsorption capacities, catalytic functionalities, and interactions with microorganisms, facilitating the removal of contaminants from different matrices of the environment. Recently, BC and their products such as nano‐BC have gained widespread recognition as a feasible option for sustainable carbon material. Fabrication, characterization, modification, and diverse applications of BC were also discussed in detail. Its integration into agriculture holds promise for enhancing soil organic matter, augmenting production, and mitigating gas emissions, thereby contributing to food security and climate change mitigation. In conclusion, BC and nano‐BC emerge as a promising avenue for addressing environmental challenges and advancing sustainable development objectives. However, further research is warranted to optimize synthesis methodologies, elucidate long‐term environmental implications, and facilitate scalable production for widespread adoption. The study is aimed at assessing the impact of biochar on the phytoaccumulation of heavy metals by okra and fluted pumpkin plants in soil polluted with petroleum hydrocarbons, and its corresponding environmental and health‐related risks. A field experiment was conducted at the automobile workshop (commonly called mechanic village) using a randomized complete block design (RCBD). The field was divided into plots and three replicates. Maize stalk biochar (MSB) and nipa palm biochar (NPB) were treated differently in each plot at a rate of 20 t ha−1. Plots containing no biochar were used as controls. The soil samples were analyzed for petroleum hydrocarbon content (PHCt), selected heavy metals as well as some other soil physicochemical properties. Plant samples were only analyzed for heavy metal contents. Analysis of variance was used to analyze the data generated. The PHCt and heavy metal content in the soil were compared with the target values set by the Department of Petroleum Resources of Nigeria whereas heavy metals in plants were compared with FAO/WHO guidelines. Okra and fluted pumpkin were evaluated for phytoaccumulating potential using bioaccumulation factor (BAF). Ecological risk assessment was done using a hazard quotient (HQ). The PHCt, cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni) were significantly decreased following the application of biochar. The NPB recorded the lowest values for PHCt (64.4 mg kg−1), lead (16.0 mg kg−1), and Ni (12.8 mg kg−1) contents while MSB had the lowest values for Cd (0.3 mg kg−1) and Cr (7.6 mg kg−1) contents. The HQ analysis showed that Cr (2.93 mg kg−1) and Pb (156.83 mg kg−1) posed a very high ecological risk to the local ecosystem. The phytoaccumulated heavy metals in plants were above the maximum allowable levels, except Ni where the content was below the maximum allowable levels. Fluted pumpkin had the highest BAF values for Cd, Cr, Pb, and Ni. Therefore, fluted pumpkin can be used as an efficient phytoremediator for soil contaminated with Cd, Cr, Pb, and Ni. Biochar, a solid material derived from a thermochemical process, has received significant attention due to its usefulness in various sectors. Previous studies have been conducted to improve the properties and quality of this material by altering the thermochemical processes, treating the feedstock, hybridizing the feedstock, and so forth, but little has been done on the effect of varying the reactor's configuration. This research aims to study the effect of varying the stainless‐steel‐based combustion compartment volume of a biomass‐fueled top‐lit updraft gasifier on the groundnut shell biochar. The biochar yields for reactors ranged from 34.9% to 51.2%. The sample produced in the smallest combustion compartment volume showed the highest carbon content, according to energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis. Potassium, another major element, decreased as the combustion compartment was reduced. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the biochar samples produced had an irregular shape and rough surfaces, and reducing the combustion compartment volume resulted in larger particles on the surface. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis showed similarities and differences in peaks observed for all the samples. The biochar samples produced can find applications in wastewater treatment, energy conversion and storage, and soil amendment, and the findings contribute to the design and optimization of biomass‐based gasifiers. Liquid‐phase exfoliation, a technique for enhancing the properties of biochar, has been recognized as effective, circumventing the limitations of other methods such as high expenses, scalability, and complexity. This study explored the synergistic effect achieved by combining chicken feathers with elephant grass to create a composite feedstock for biochar production. The biochar was subjected to liquid‐phase exfoliation using acid and acetone. Elemental analysis indicated that the co‐carbonization of the combined biomass produced an enriched hybrid biochar. The oxygen content in both exfoliation routes (acid and acetone) increased, with an increase and decrease in carbon content in acetone and acid exfoliation, respectively. Textural analysis revealed significant enhancement, with surface areas of the acid‐exfoliated biochar more than twice the size of the hybrid biochar. The pore volume of both exfoliated samples was double that of the hybrid biochar. Microscopic surface examination revealed rougher, porous structures in the exfoliated biochars in comparison with the smooth, cohesive surface in hybrid biochar. Functional group analysis showed the presence of aromatic rings, a carbocyclic group, and an alkene, suggesting potential applications in adsorption. This study provides an efficient method for using liquid‐phase exfoliation to enhance biochar properties, benefiting industries reliant on biochar production and biomass utilization by improving product quality, sustainability, and environmental impact. In this study, biochars with different structures were prepared through HNO3 oxidation and secondary pyrolysis to study the relationship between the structure of biochar and its selectivity for the adsorption of light and heavy aromatics in bio‐oil. The results showed that the adsorption rates of biochar with different structures ranged from 2.90 to 4.00 g bio‐oil per g biochar. The influence of pore structure was dominant, followed by the influence of O‐containing functional groups and the degree of graphitization. The higher the adsorption capacity of biochar for bio‐oil, the smaller the concentrations of the light aromatic model compounds in the absorbed bio‐oil (ABO). Among the five light aromatics, biochar has the best adsorption selectivity for dihydroxybiphenyl and the worst for eugenol and propyl phenol. This is attributed to the diphenyl ring structure of dihydroxybiphenyl, which makes it more susceptible to adsorption, and other light model compounds only have one benzene ring. In summary, biochar demonstrates better adsorption selectivity for heavy aromatics than light aromatics. The more developed the pore structure is, the more enriched O‐containing functional groups are, and the higher the graphitization degree of biochar is, the better the selective adsorption of aromatic compounds in bio‐oil. The investment potential for biochar production from low‐value forest biomass in the western USA is over USD 20 billion at current carbon prices. This investment could generate approximately 70 million carbon credits annual – roughly the same number currently generated globally by all forestry and agricultural carbon projects. Biochar production that utilizes woody biomass specifically from wildfire fuel thinning projects as a feedstock can contribute financially to much‐needed fuel thinning projects. Each coupled biochar and carbon credit production system has positive returns in certain scenarios. Light upgrades to existing biopower facilities have the highest returns, with internal rates of return generally between 10–30%. Mobile biochar production often had the lowest returns. However, land managers can subsidize mobile biochar production up to USD 150–300 per tonne of biochar and still save money in comparison with pile‐burning low‐value biomass while also generating approximately one carbon credit for every two bone‐dry tonnes of low‐value biomass turned to biochar. The critical barrier to industry growth is the lack of transparent biomass supply chains that enable long‐term contracting for feedstock, production schedules, and investment. Moving forward, there are three potential pathways for the biochar industry to scale and utilize biomass from forest management and fuel thinning projects. Either (1) the carbon market will need to sustain high carbon prices, (2) a subsidy or other mechanism will need to decrease the cost of feedstock biomass, or (3) production will need to take advantage of economies of scale to bring down biochar prices while increasing production. BACKGROUND: Bio‐electro‐Fenton (BEF) systems, specifically microbial fuel cell (MFC) driven electro‐Fenton (EF) systems, have gained significant attention in wastewater treatment in recent years. The role of the cathode catalyst in BEF is crucial, as it undergoes O2 reduction via a 2e− oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to produce H2O2. In this study, we have harnessed the abundant lignocellulosic composition of cocoa pod husk (CPH) to prepare a novel iron‐doped heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for the BEF system. Cocoa is typically grown for its wet beans, which constitute only one third of cocoa fruit by weight, while CPH makes up about two‐thirds of the weight and is often discarded as by‐product or waste. As a result, approximately 10 million tons of CPH are produced globally each year, highlighting the potential for transforming it into a value‐added product. To date, CPH has been utilised as a natural fertiliser, soil amendment, biomass fuel, poultry and livestock feed ingredient, and more. RESULTS: The presence of mesoporous structure, iron content, oxygen containing functional groups, and prominent reduction peaks in cyclic voltammetry validated the Fe‐doped cocoa husk biochar's (Fe‐CHB) potential to act as an ORR catalyst. The BEF system achieved an open circuit voltage, current, and power densities of 0.697 V, 0.15 A/m2, and 0.040 W/m2, respectively, at an optimum resistance of 350 Ω. Optimisation of the process parameters using RSM and ANN predicted maximum dye removal efficiencies of 93.34% and 92.45%, respectively, at dye and substrate concentrations of 10 mg/L and 1 g/L. These predictions closely aligned with the experimental findings of 92.5%. CONCLUSION: The synthesised catalyst provided large surface area, electrical conductivity, superior ORR catalytic efficiencies, and ample sites for H2O2 activation. BACKGROUND: Optimizing biochar application is vital for enhancing crop production and ensuring sustainable agricultural production. A 3‐year field experiment was established to explore the effects of varying the biochar application rate (BAR) on crop growth, quality, productivity and yields. BAR was set at 0, 10, 50 and 100 t ha−1 in 2018; 0, 10, 25, 50 and 100 t ha−1 in 2019; and 0, 10, 25 and 30 t ha−1 in 2020. Crop quality and growth status and production were evaluated using the dynamic technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution with the entropy weighted method (DTOPSIS‐EW), principal component analysis (PCA), membership function analysis (MFA), gray relation analysis (GRA) and the fuzzy Borda combination evaluation method. RESULTS: Low‐dose BAR (≤ 25 t ha−1 for cotton; ≤ 50 t ha−1 for sugar beet) effectively increased biomass, plant height, leaf area index (LAI), water and fertility (N, P and K) productivities, and yield. Biochar application increased the salt absorption and sugar content in sugar beet, with the most notable increases being 116.45% and 20.35%, respectively. Conversely, BAR had no significant effect on cotton fiber quality. The GRA method was the most appropriate for assessing crop growth and quality. The most indicative parameters for reflecting cotton and sugarbeet growth and quality status were biomass and LAI. The 10 t ha−1 BAR consistently produced the highest scores and was the most economically viable option, as evaluated by DTOPSIS‐EW. Common precursors for carbon materials typically include petroleum‐based polymers or MOF materials. However, these materials often encounter challenges such as metal aggregation, high cost, and metals leaching. In this work, a novel of approach lignin‐metal supramolecular framework complex (MSF@Lignin) is introduced. These complexes are formed through oxidative ammonolysis of lignin (OAL) to synthesize a nitrogen‐doped carbon‐encapsulated CoRu nanocatalyst (CoRu@OALC) via in situ carbonization. CoRu@OALC exhibited exceptional performance in both HER (90 mV) and OER (200 mV) at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, with an overall water splitting voltage of 1.5 V and outstanding stability under high density. During the pyrolysis process, metal became encapsulated by lignin‐derived carbon, occurring within the temperature range of 600–700 °C. In the catalytic process, active sites are primarily located within the defects in lignin‐derived carbon, showcasing a unique "self‐healing" phenomenon within the carbon layer. Oxygen‐containing intermediates (*OH, *O, and *OOH) facilitated the reconstruction of defects on the carbon layer, while the hydrogen‐containing intermediates (*H) contributed to the reappearance of a defect‐rich structure. In this study, three types of biochar including wood biochar (WB), rice husk biochar (RHB), and bamboo biochar (BB) were used as fillers to mix with wood flour (WF), polypropylene (PP), and maleic anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) to prepare wood polymer biochar composites (WPBC). The influences of biochar types and addition amounts (10 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt%, and 40 wt%) on the mechanical properties, dimension stability, and thermal stability of WPBC were investigated. The results showed that the water absorption rate and thickness swelling rate of WPBC were lower than control group due to the hydrophobic nature of the biochar. Additionally, the presence of biochar was beneficial to the interfacial bonding and stress transmission in composites, resulting in better mechanical properties. Composites containing 20 wt% RHB showed the highest flexural modulus among all, which increased by 11.27% compared to control group. Adding WB also enhanced the tensile and impact strength of composites at a loading level of 10 wt%, with the value of 39.10 MPa and 15.55 KJ/m2, respectively. The thermal stability and flame retardancy of WPBC was improved due to the presence of SiO2 in biochar, which could hinder heat transmission and thermal degradation during combustion process. Concurrently, the rate of heat release and smoke generation in WPBC also decreased significantly. The oxygen limiting index (LOI) of composites with 20 wt% RHB was as high as 26.64%, increasing by 30.14% compared to control group. The results suggested that biochar was a promising alternative to commercial additives for the cost‐effective production of composites. Biochar possesses unique characteristics, including a substantial surface area, a high carbon content, sufficient capacity for cation exchange, and a robust structure. However, biochar contains hazardous pollutants like volatile organic compounds that harm soil properties and functionality. Although several studies on biochar production from various feedstocks have been undertaken in recent years, several issues about feedstock preparation, economic feasibility, influencing factors, and the proper utilization of biochar production processes need to be addressed. This paper thus addresses these issues by providing potential solutions identified through a comprehensive review. Slow pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass and Acacia nilotica yields biochar from 20 to 52 wt% at various temperatures and residence times. Biochar yield varies from 29 to 48.3 wt% when waste tires and corn stalks are rapidly pyrolyzed at higher temperatures and for shorter periods. Torrefaction of algal biomass at moderate temperatures with different residence times can result in a substantial yield of 50–60 wt%. However, the variability and heterogeneity of waste feedstocks pose potential challenges affecting biochar's quality and properties. Given its widespread use in carbon sequestration, soil remediation, wastewater purification, and organic waste composting, the mechanisms of biochar production in environmental usage need to be investigated. The surging global population strains resources, escalating pollution, and exacerbating water scarcity. Sustainable water management necessitates alternative sources such as abandoned mine water. However, these sources often contain hazardous heavy metals, like lead, copper, iron, and manganese, posing grave health and environmental risks. Conventional methods struggle to effectively treat these heavy metals in abandoned mining ponds, urging the search for cost‐efficient and sustainable solutions. Biochar, particularly from spent mushroom compost (SMC), emerges as a potent adsorbent due to its high surface area and binding groups. Yet, the variability in its efficiency remains a challenge. Conventional empirical models fail to capture the dynamic nature of adsorption processes accurately. Adopting machine learning, specifically an adaptive neuro‐fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), shows potential in predicting adsorption efficiency. This study aims to employ ANFIS to forecast SMC biochar's performance in a lab‐scale metal retention pond, providing design charts for diverse initial metal concentrations and pH levels. Validation through real cases aims to enhance accuracy and establish a framework for future heavy metal adsorption capacities. This research offers a sustainable approach to removing heavy metals from abandoned mining ponds whereas the computational modeling in optimizing SMC biochar introduces a novel approach for practical applications. Pyrolysis of two types of pellets (T1: 100% wheat straw, and T2: 70% wheat straw; 10% sawdust, 10% biochar, and 10% bentonite clay) was performed in a pilot‐scale reactor under a nitrogen environment at 20°C to 700°C. This was to investigate slow pyrolysis yields and gas composition as a function of temperature and residence time. The experimental data were obtained between 300°C and 600°C, with a residence time of 90 min, a nitrogen flow rate of 50 cm3/min, and a heating rate of 20°C/min. The results indicated that the maximum pyrolysis temperature is 605°C with a residence time of 55 min. The product analysis showed that the proportion of gas was higher than that of biochar and bio‐oil. The conversion efficiency increased with higher temperatures and varied between 66% and 76%. The results showed that carbon dioxide was the main component in the produced gas, and the maximum gas concentration was 63.6% at 300°C for T1. The higher temperature and longer residence time increased the syngas (CO + H2) composition for both T1 and T2 treatments. Nevertheless, the produced biochar had a high carbon content and retained a high calorific value, indicating slow pyrolysis is the ideal utilization route of wheat straw pellet biomass for biochar. The present study aims to remove chromium (Cr) from a synthetic solution using Ziziphus jujube seed (ZJS)‐activated biochar (ZJSAB) as an adsorbent. Physicochemical characterization was carried out to understand the properties of ZJSAB samples. Adsorption characteristics of ZJSAB were determined using batch experiments for various temperatures, pH, dosage, concentration, and duration. The study reveals ZJSAB has 93 % efficiency in the removal of Cr for an initial concentration of 60 mg L−1 at 30 °C and 2 pH with 0.6 g L−1 dosage and 120 min duration. Freundlich isotherm and pseudo‐second‐order models were best fit with maximum removal efficiency for ZJSAB. When 0.3 N hydrochloric acid was introduced to a desorption study, Cr desorption was 93.47 %. The study reveals that activated biochar from ZJS was efficient for Cr removal from aqueous solutions. Excessive industrial release of trace elements may pose a great risk to the environment. Conventional remediation treatments have considerable limitations, making less expensive new technologies an important research area. Batch experiments were conducted at room temperature to investigate the use of two lignite‐derived humic products (nano‐humus and humic powder) and a cattle manure biochar as adsorbents in the removal of cadmium and zinc from laboratory synthesized water. Nano‐humus was most effective in adsorbing Cd(II), wherein 89% adsorption was rapidly achieved in 15 min. The adsorbed amount of Cd(II) and Zn(II) both increased with initial metal ion concentrations from 25 to 125 mg L−1. Despite being produced from the same sources, nano‐humus and humic powder showed different properties and adsorption behaviors. The adsorption mechanism of nano‐humus followed the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model, indicating multilayer chemisorption. Humic powder followed the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model, although it had a low isotherm model fit, implying chemisorption‐dominated adsorption. Cattle manure biochar followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo‐first‐order kinetics model, suggesting diffusion‐dominated multilayer adsorption. Handling of agricultural residues is a major concern today, since they pose a serious threat to the environment. Pyrolysis is one among the different techniques explored across the globe towards the effective conversion of these crop residues into various useful products. In this work, the degradation behaviour of corn husk loaded with tin oxide nanoparticles and raw corn husk are characterized separately by employing thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). From the thermograms obtained, the energy required for facilitating the degradation process with the aid of the catalyst is found to be 98.48 kJ/mol. Further, the corn husk loaded with prepared tin oxide nanoparticles (0.1 g& 0.2 g) is subjected to pyrolytic degradation at different temperature ranges from 400 °C to 550 °C and compared with thermal pyrolysis. The biochar retained from the pyrolysis process is investigated for its efficacy as an energy storage material after coating them over graphite sheet. Electrochemical analysis reveals the fabricated SnO2/biochar nanocomposite have excellent energy storage characteristics (205 F/g at a scan rate of 10 mV/s) which was attributed to the presence of facile architecture with porous surface area. Sustainability has become increasingly important as environmental issues continue to rise. Biodegradable polymers offer a sustainable solution as they use biomass. In this study, biochar (BC) prepared by the pyrolysis of biomass was compounded with polybutylene succinate (PBS) to enhance its Young's modulus, and the residual BC was shown to amend the soil, following degradation. The incorporation of biochar into the PBS matrix is strategically achieved through a BC with treatment involving an aprotic polar solvent. This process not only reduces the size of the biochar particles but also ensures their uniform dispersion within the PBS matrix. As a result, a remarkable 2.5-fold increase in Young's modulus is observed, reaching an impressive 571.04 MPa, compared with the baseline Young's modulus of neat PBS, which stands at 220.92 MPa. Interestingly, the degradation rate of the resulting composites was comparable to that of neat PBS despite the decrease in the number of potential hydrolysis sites owing to the increased Young's modulus of the PBS/BC composite. These sustainable composite exhibited properties different from those of conventional PBS and is expected to be used in potentially novel applications toward environmental sustainability, such as in agricultural mulch films or electronic printing. Biochar can deliver many agronomic benefits, though effects may be greatest in suboptimal agricultural soils. The objective of this study was to investigate biochar in prime agricultural soils in a Mediterranean climate. In 3‐year irrigated processing tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) field trials, in which three biochars were amended to a sandy and silt loam, biochar did not influence yield. Given the global policy focus on biochar for climate change mitigation and adaptation, however, it is essential to measure more than just agronomic parameters. To this end, a soil health assessment was conducted 2.5 years after biochar amendment. In the fertile silt loam and more nutrient‐limited sandy loam, biochars had a variable but positive effect on pH, electrical conductivity, soil potassium, water stable aggregation, and permanganate oxidizable carbon. There was no effect on soil moisture nor potentially mineralizable nitrogen or carbon. In the silt loam, there was no change in microbial biomass or phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) composition. In the sandy loam, almond shell biochars were associated with a slight increase in total biomass, an increase in the ratio of fungal to bacteria PLFAs, and reductions in multiple PLFA ratios were typically interpreted as indicators of environmental stress. Results of this study demonstrate that biochar may deliver soil health benefits in agricultural soils in a Mediterranean climate. However, increased soil health does not necessarily engender increased agricultural productivity within a 3‐year period. Furthermore, increases in soil health indicators were inconsistent across soil and biochar types, underscoring the need for site‐ and material‐specific investigation. Biochar may improve the health of environmentally sensitive soils (i.e., low C, sandy, sloping) especially if combined with cover crops (CCs), but research is scant. We assessed how wood biochar (836 g C kg−1) applied at 0, 6.25, 12.5, 25, and 50 Mg ha−1 to sandy, sloping, and semi‐arid soils with and without CCs affects soils and crop yields in the central US Great Plains for 3 years. We measured crop yields and CC biomass each year, and most soil properties in Years 1 and 3. Biochar did not interact with CCs, suggesting the combination was no better than biochar or CC alone. In the semi‐arid soil, crop and CC did not establish due to persistent droughts. Biochar benefits were highly site‐specific. Biochar improved some soil properties but only in the sandy and sloping soils and at the biochar application depth (0‐ to 15‐cm soil depth). The 50 Mg biochar ha−1 improved the soil's ability to sorb water (0.08 cm s−1/2). Also, in the sandy soil, it increased soil organic matter concentration (2.5 g kg−1), soil pH (0.65 units), and available water (0.07 m3 m−3) only in Year 1, suggesting a biochar benefit in sandy soils is short‐lived. In the sloping soil, >25 Mg biochar ha−1 reduced bulk density (0.16 Mg m−3) and increased soil mean weight diameter of water‐stable aggregates (0.58 mm), organic matter concentration (11.42 g kg−1), infiltration (9.35 cm), CC biomass production (0.27 Mg ha−1), and some microbial biomass groups. Biochar did not affect crop yields. Overall, >25 Mg biochar ha−1 improved properties in some soils without interacting with CCs. This work studies red mud, a residue from the processing of bauxite, as a support catalyst in the thermocatalytic reforming (TCR) process, using wood, digestate, and straw as case studies. Thermocatalytic reforming is a thermochemical process for the conversion of biomass into biofuels, combining intermediate pyrolysis and catalytic reforming and resulting in high‐quality biofuels. The quantity and quality of the catalyst in the postreformer is vital as it influences the reactions taking place in it. Normally, nonreactive components of the char produced in the process act as the catalyst in the postreformer but adding a support catalyst may improve the products. In this work, red mud is introduced in the process by mixing it with the feedstock in a ratio of 1:3. The results, in comparison with normal TCR experiments on the same feedstock materials, show that the introduction of red mud into the process generally reduces the biochar yield and generally increases the biogas and product water yields, and the bio‐oil yield remains constant. Its introduction also increases the hydrogen fraction of the gas and tends to reduce the nitrogen and sulfur content of the products, thus improving their quality. These observations are consistent across feedstock materials and postreformer temperatures. The results therefore suggest that red mud is a good support catalyst for increasing the gas yield, increasing the hydrogen fraction of the gas, and improving the quality of the products from the TCR process. Biochar, an organic carbonaceous matter, is a unique feed additive that is now being used in aquaculture industry to formulate a cost‐effective and eco‐friendly diet. This experiment (in door) was conducted over course of 90 days to determine the most effective form of biochar, produced from various sources, for supplementation in Moringa oleifera seed meal‐based diet. These sources were: farmyard manure biochar, parthenium biochar (PB), vegetable waste biochar, poultry waste biochar (PWB) and corncob waste biochar, added at 2 g/kg concentration to determine the effect of supplementation on the growth indices, nutrient absorption, carcass composition, haematology and mineral status of Labeo rohita (rohu) fingerlings. The research design consisted of six test diets with three replications (6 × 3) of each. Total of 270 fingerlings (6.30 ± 0.020 g) were fed at 5% body weight and 15 of them were kept in separate steel tanks. The results indicated that PWB was most effective in improving weight gain (285.58 ± 4.54%) and feed conversion ratio (1.060 ± 0.040) compared to control diet and other test diets. The same type of biochar (PWB) produced the best results for nutrient digestibility, that is, crude protein, crude fat and gross energy and carcass composition. In terms of haematology and mineral status, PWB showed the best results. In conclusion, it was found that PWB significantly enhanced (p < 0.05) L. rohita fingerling's growth, carcass composition, nutrient digestibility, haematological parameters (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and haemoglobin) and mineral composition (Ca, Na, P, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, K and Cu) whereas PB negatively affected all parameters. Thin layer sediment placement (TLP) is used to build elevation in marshes, counteracting effects of subsidence and sea level rise. However, TLP success may vary due to plant stress associated with reductions in nutrient availability and hydrologic flushing or through the creation of acid sulfate soils. This study examined the influence of sediment grain size and soil amendments on plant growth, soil and porewater characteristics, and greenhouse gas exchange for three key U.S. salt marsh plants: Spartina alterniflora (synonym Sporobolus alterniflorus), Spartina patens (synonym Sporobolus pumilus), and Salicornia pacifica. We found that bioavailable nitrogen concentrations (measured as extractable NH4+‐N) and porewater pH and salinity were inversely related to grain size, while soil redox was more reducing in finer sediments. This suggests that utilizing finer sediments in TLP projects will result in a more reduced environment with higher nutrient availability, while larger grain sized sediments will be better flushed and oxygenated. We further found that grain size had a significant effect on vegetation biomass allocation and rates of gas exchange, although these effects were species‐specific. We found that soil amendments (biochar and compost) did not subsidize plant growth but were associated with increases in soil respiration and methane emissions. Biochar amendments were additionally ineffective in ameliorating acid sulfate conditions. This study uncovers complex interactions between sediment type and vegetation, emphasizing the limitations of soil amendments. BACKGROUND: The seafood processing industries are tremendously increasing in numbers which eventually discharge a large quantity of wastewater with a high range of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), directly into the aquatic environment. A high level of BOD and COD in wastewater pertains to a higher level of pollution which must be reduced to prevent hazardous impacts on ecosystems. The main objective of the research aimed to develop cost‐effective biochar and to remove BOD and COD from processing wastewater using two natural biomasses: water hyacinth and sugarcane bagasse. RESULTS: NaOH‐treated and non‐treated biochar for both water hyacinth as well as sugarcane bagasse were prepared through the process of pyrolysis carried out at 600 °C with three different residence times of 30, 45 and 60 min. The wastewater was initially analyzed for BOD and COD levels. The results showed that among all the groups of biochars, the water hyacinth NaOH‐treated biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C for 60 min exhibited significantly (P < 0.05) higher levels of reduction in BOD (86.6 ± 0.03%) and COD (94.3 ± 0.05%) at a residence time of 60 min in D2 (0.5 g (250 mL)−1). The maximum removal efficiency was observed for water hyacinth NaOH‐treated biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C for 60 min. CONCLUSION: The removal efficiencies of organic load revealed that the treated biochars exhibited a better reduction of nutrients. The biochar efficiencies when compared with those of activated carbon exhibited a higher removal level. Background: Catalytic co‐pyrolysis of biomass with waste plastics can produce high‐quality chemicals, making it a potential alternative to fossil fuels. The production of aromatic‐rich oil was achieved in this work by the catalytic co‐pyrolysis of pine sawdust and low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) using a series of biochar (BC) made using different preparation methods. Zinc chloride (ZnCl2) was employed to activate the BC during the preparation process, owing to its optimal activity for the co‐pyrolysis intermediates. The study compared the effects of BCs activated using different treatment methods on the yield and fractions of pine sawdust and LDPE co‐pyrolysis in a fast pyrolysis tube furnace at 650 °C. Results: The study indicates that the ZnCl2 BC, prepared from pine sawdust by fast pyrolysis (F‐AC), exhibited the best aromatic catalytic activity. The selectivity to aromatic hydrocarbons was 72.53%, and the content of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) was 32.17%. Conclusion: The Diels–Alder reaction and aromatization were made more effective due to the Zn sites and large pore structure in F‐AC. Using Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, it was found that F‐AC contained more oxygen (O)‐containing groups in abundance, which improved its adsorption capacity for reaction intermediates. At the same time, the porous structure and high SSA of BC provided a region for the reaction intermediate to interact with the active center containing O‐containing groups. This enhanced the synergy between biomass and plastics and raised the selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons. Pollution from harmful heavy metal ions such as Pb(II) and Cu(II) is causing serious environmental and health problems. In this study, Sodium and nitrogen co‐doped porous carbon material (Na/NABc) was successfully prepared from seaweed, sodium hydroxide, and dicyandiamide. The experimental results showed that Na/NABc is an excellent adsorbent for the effective removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) from water bodies. Specifically, 99.8% of Pb(II) and 64.6% Cu(II) (100 mg/L) were removed within 12 h using 10 mg Na/NABc(10%) at 25 °C. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) in aqueous solution by Na/NABc(10%) was efficient and rapid in the first stage. The theoretical maximum removal capacities of Na/NABc for Pb(II) and Cu(II) were 959.6 and 299.1 mg/g, respectively. Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions were adsorbed quickly in the first 60 min, and the kinetics data were generally consistent with a pseudo‐second‐order model. Na/NABc(10%) had a large distribution coefficient for Pb(II) (8.38 L/mg) and Cu(II) (1.17 L/mg). The possible mechanisms were precipitation, Ion exchange, and surface complexation. The removal rate can reach about 70% after five cycles, and the release of sodium meets the standard. Biochar, a black carbon material produced by high‐temperature, low‐oxygen pyrolysis of organic solids, can improve soil properties and realize carbon neutrality. However, how to effectively produce and apply biochar in the face of the complex soil environment and intractable widespread land degradation is still uncertain. This review is based on 1073 sets of data in 316 publications to address this issue. Firstly, the impact of different process parameters, namely feedstocks, pyrolysis temperature and activation on physicochemical properties of biochar are systematically summarized. Secondly, the effect of biochar on different soil degradation problems are reviewed from the perspective of the interaction between the physicochemical properties of biochar and soil characteristics. The "matching" of biochar properties, level of degradation and environmental factors can be used to design the desired biochar. Finally, future research should focus on biochar aging and costs and benefits of using biochar. The concept of "artificial intelligence designed biochar" is discussed to improve the degree of automation in biochar production and the predictability and suitability of its application for specific cases. Biochar application is widely recognized as an effective approach for increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) and mitigating climate change in agroecosystems. However, the effects of biochar application on net accumulations and relative contributions of different SOC sources remain unclear. Here, we explored the effects of biochar application on plant‐derived (PDC) and microbial necromass C (MNC) in a 10‐year experimental rice–wheat rotation field receiving four different intensities of biochar application (0, 2.25, 11.5, and 22.5 t ha−1 for each crop season), using phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), lignin phenols and amino sugars as biomarkers of microbial biomass, PDC and MNC, respectively. Our results showed that biochar application increased SOC content and stock by 32.6%–203% and 26.4%–145%, respectively. Higher biochar application (11.5 and 22.5 t ha−1) increased soil pH, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), SOC/TN, and root biomass. In addition, higher biochar application enhanced bacterial, fungal, and total microbial biomass. Plant lignin phenols and MNC contents significantly increased, whereas their contributions to SOC significantly decreased with the increase in biochar application rates due to the disproportionate increase in PDC and MNC, and SOC. Fungal necromass had a greater contribution to SOC than bacterial necromass. The fungal/bacterial necromass decreased from 2.56 to 2.26 with increasing biochar application rates, because of the higher abundances of bacteria than that of fungi as indicated by PLFAs under higher biochar application rates. Random forest analyses revealed that pH, TP, and SOC/TN were the main factors controlling plant lignin and MNC accumulation. Structural equation modeling revealed that biochar application increased lignin phenols by stimulating root biomass, whereas enhanced MNC accumulation was primarily from increased microbial biomass and lignin phenols. Overall, our findings suggest that biochar application increases the accumulation of the two SOC sources but decreases their contributions to SOC in paddy soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Biochar can enhance phytoremediation in petroleum hydrocarbon polluted soils, making it an intriguing soil amendment option for remediating polluted soil. Biochar can improve the fertility of depleted soils through a range of mechanisms. This study can contribute valuable insights into the origin of biochar and enhance our understanding of the efficacy of different biochar types in remediating petroleum hydrocarbon polluted soils. Aims: To assess the efficacy of different biochar types and plant growth in remediating petroleum hydrocarbon polluted soils. Methods: A field experiment was conducted at the automobile workshop (commonly called mechanic village) from July to October 2021, using a randomized complete block design. The land was sectioned into designated plots with three replicates. Maize stalk biochar (MSB) and nipa palm biochar (NPB) were treated differently in each plot at a rate of 20 t ha−1. Plots containing no biochar were used as controls. Initial and final soil analyses were conducted. Results: Preliminary soil assessments revealed higher values of soil bulk density (1.51 g cm−3), moisture content (35.02%), organic carbon (41.01 g kg−1), cation exchange capacity (13.27 cmol kg−1), total petroleum hydrocarbon content (PHCt) (775.83 mg kg−1), cadmium (Cd) (5.41 mg kg−1), chromium (Cr) (25 mg kg−1), lead (Pb) (33.51 mg kg−1), and zinc (Zn) (0.91 mg kg−1) in the polluted soil than in the unpolluted counterpart. The polluted soil displayed lower hydraulic conductivity (Ks) (1.17 cm h−1), available phosphorus (69.46 mg kg−1), manganese (Mn) (6.38 mg kg−1) and iron (Fe) (4.18 mg kg−1) contents than the unpolluted soil. The PHCt, Cd, and Cr were significantly decreased following the application of biochar. NPB recorded the lowest petroleum hydrocarbon (19%), lead (37%), manganese (57%), and zinc (69%) contents, whereas MSB had the lowest cadmium (50%) and chromium (27%) contents when compared with the control. Between heavy metal accumulations in the leaves and fruits, a greater accumulation of Cd, Cr, and Pb was found in the leaves, whereas Ni accumulation was found in the fruits. The highest Cd (47.0 mg kg−1) and Ni (8.3 mg kg−1) accumulations in the leaves were recorded in NPB treated plots. Similarly, Cd (5.3 mg kg−1), Cr (3.7 mg kg−1), Pb (21.6 mg kg−1), and Ni (23.4 mg kg−1) accumulation in the fruits recorded the highest values in the NPB treated plots. The NPB plants were the tallest compared with the other treatments. In addition, NPB plants had the widest leaf area compared with other treatments. Wastewater from the textile and dyeing industries contains hazardous dyes. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of magnetic biochar nanocomposites synthesized from khat leftovers (KLs) and coffee husks (CHs) in removing methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. Magnetic biochar nanocomposites were synthesized by pretreating 25 g of biomass with a 12.5 mmol mixture of FeS and FeCl3 at a 1:1 molar ratio, followed by pyrolyzing at 300°C for 1 h. The resulting products were analyzed using X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, and Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller. The results showed that the adsorbents are amorphous, and the activated biochars, are more porous and contain various functional groups such as C‐O, C = C, O‐H, C‐H, and Fe‐O. When 0.2 g of pristine biochars of CH and KL were applied to 20 mL aqueous solutions containing 20 mg/L of MB at pH 7.5 and 25°C, they removed 44.73% and 75.26% of MB, respectively. However, the resulting nanocomposites exhibited a maximum removal efficiency of 99.10% and 99.23% with magnetic iron oxide‐CH biochar nanocomposite (Fe3O4‐CHBNC) and magnetic iron oxide‐KL biochar nanocomposite (Fe3O4‐KLBNC), respectively, with maximum adsorption capacities of 51.02 and 78.13 mg/g. Biochar, a carbon‐rich material produced through the pyrolysis of biomass, has been shown to have the potential to remove contaminants from water and wastewater. However, due to the weak adsorption capacity and narrow adsorption range of pure biochar, it is modified, either chemically or physically, in order to optimize its applications in water and wastewater treatment. This study summarizes the recent advancements in the application of modified biochar for water and wastewater treatment. Modification of biochar increases its surface area and porous structure, which makes it an effective adsorbent to immobilize a range of contaminants, such as heavy metals, dyes, and organic contaminants. It can also be used as a catalyst in the biodegradation of organic pollutants as it can provide a substrate for microbial growth and metabolism, enhancing pollutant degradation. This study also summarizes various biochar modifications such as gas, acid, alkali, metal, organic compounds, and oxidizing agents. Among the metal‐modified biochar, Iron‐modified biochar has shown the highest tetracycline (TC) removal efficiency (90.7%) and nitrate adsorption capacity (32.33 mg g−1). N‐doped biochars were found to be the most effective biochars for removing heavy metals such as Cd2+ or Cu2+ and aromatic compounds as they can increase the adsorption of raw biochar by up to 70%. Increasing the number of functional groups on the surface of the biochar by using organic compounds like acrylonitrile and chitosan showed a two to three‐fold increase in the adsorption capacity of pollutants such as Cd2+ and Hg2+. In the present study, sustainable upscaling of rice straw, an agri‐residue, is explored as the way to obtain active material to prepare anode for use in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). The biochar having high carbon and low silica content is prepared by initial chemical treatment of rice straw followed by its pyrolysis. The pristine and modified biochar are characterized using Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller surface area, energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, carbon hydrogen nitrogen sulphur elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X‐Ray power diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman analysis and the modified biochar show an enhancement in graphitic carbon content. A coin cell is assembled using anode prepared from modified biochar. The coin cell is subjected to electrochemical testing and had a discharge capacity of 352 mA.h g−1. Further, the coin cell is tested for 100 cycles and a columbic efficiency of 99.7% was obtained. To investigate the cracking behavior in the evaporation process of the soil surface with biochar as an additive, five experimental groups were established in the natural environment with 0, 12, 60, 120, and 170 g·kg−1 biochar. The results of an investigation on organic matter and aggregations indicate that a high content of biochar can significantly improve the content of organic matter and the amount of soil aggregates. After adding 60 and 170 g·kg−1 biochar, the content of organic matter increased by 19.47% and 84.12%, respectively, and the content of soil aggregates with an average diameter greater than 0.25 mm increased by 16.43% and 38.20%, respectively. The investigation also examines the evaporation and cracking characteristics of soils that contain biochar. The rate of evaporation is approximately a "step" type function with time. The rate of evaporation is observed in three stages: the rapid, decelerating, and final evaporation stages. In the rapid evaporation stage, the initial evaporation rate of the sample that contains biochar is increased on average by 46%. The fractal dimension and cracks rate are decreased by 22.95% and 20.99% with 120 g·kg−1 biochar addition. This means that the increase of soil organic matter after adding biochar plays a crucial role in the stability of aggregates. Successful reclamation and revegetation of disturbed sites depends on the availability of sufficient topsoil. Current regulations in western Canada require the replacement of =80% of the original topsoil depth (TRD) to restore pre-disturbance productivity. However, salvaged topsoil at many legacy and other disturbed sites is often insufficient to achieve the 80% TRD (TRD80). This 5-year study examined vegetation responses to 50% TRD without organic amendment (TRD50) or amended with either peat (PTRD50) or biochar (BTRD50), relative to the TRD80 treatment, following borrow site reclamation in northeastern Alberta, Canada. Amendments were applied once at rates calculated to bring organic carbon in the topsoil to concentrations approximating those in the TRD80 treatment. Tree and shrub seedling mixes were transplanted following amendment application and vegetation attributes were measured annually thereafter. Results showed that PTRD50 performed as well as TRD80 and outperformed BTRD50 with respect to native species' canopy cover and tree seedling height. Canopy covers of forb and non-native species decreased significantly whereas those of graminoid and native species increased over time for all treatments. Across treatments, native plant species richness increased by 5% per year while nonnative species richness decreased by 19% per year. Overall, peat showed a satisfactory rate of recovery and a trajectory toward the natural boreal forest, indicating its potential to improve reclamation success at disturbed boreal sites where salvaged soil is insufficient to attain equivalent land capability. The removal of toxic poly‐ and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as persistent pollutants from wastewater is imperative but challenging for water remediation. Many adsorbents including activated carbon, biochar, and clay minerals have been investigated for PFAS removal, but most of these materials are faced with high cost or/and low efficiency. The use of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) as sorbents is attractive for efficient removal of PFAS due to their tailor‐made structures and high surface areas. Herein, we synthesized, characterized a water stable Zr‐based porphyrinic MOF (PCN‐224) with cooperative adsorption domains, and demonstrated its excellent capture performance toward perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). PCN‐224 has maximum uptake capacities of 963, 517, and 395 mg g−1 for PFOS, PFHxS, and PFBS, respectively, which are much higher than that of granular activated carbon. Moreover, coexistent anions (Cl−, SO42−) and humic acid have negligible effects on PFOS adsorption. The excellent adsorption performance of PCN‐224 toward PFOS is due to the orthogonal cationic channel pores with a diameter of 1.9 nm, the hydrophobic porphyrin units, and the Zr6 clusters with acidic sites. There has been an ongoing discussion about whether using functionalized biochar nanoparticles for pollutant removal is practical. The existing uncertainty surrounding functionalized biochar nanoparticles raises questions regarding their effectiveness in unraveling this problem. In this study, functionalized biochar nanoparticles were produced from corn (Zea mays L.) residues and Conocarpus erectus L. wood at 400°C and 700°C using the H2SO4/HNO3 treatment. The synthesized nanoparticles were used to explore their sorption properties for Pb2+. Various adsorption kinetic and isotherm models were evaluated using linear and nonlinear regression techniques. The functionalized biochar nanoparticles originated from wood at 400°C had the largest (80.74 mg g−1) Pb2+ adsorption capacity due to their highest O/C and the most negative zeta potential. In comparison, nanoparticles fabricated from corn residues at 700°C showed the lowest (70.47 mg g−1) Pb2+ adsorption capacity. Pyrolysis temperature affected the sorption process. Functionalized biochar nanoparticles produced at 400°C were more successful in sorbing the pollutant than those fabricated at 700°C. Linear and nonlinear pseudo‐second‐order kinetic models described Pb2+ adsorption kinetics well, indicating the rate‐controlling step. The nonlinear Freundlich model described the equilibrium relationship between adsorbate concentration and capacity, elucidating adsorption site heterogeneity and biochar nanoparticles' affinity for Pb2+. Our study shows that functionalized biochar nanoparticles could help develop procedures for remediating polluted environments. Manganese (Mn) oxide‐coated sand has been suggested as an amendment for scrubbing metals in water filtration beds and also as a less concentrated medium for uniformly amending soils with Mn oxides in mesocosm scale studies. Earlier work at the lab bench scale, using potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solutions that were reduced with sodium (Na) lactate, resulted in sands coated with about 0.13% Mn. The goal of this project was to increase the amount of Mn oxide that could be coated on sand to make it a more useful amendment and also to attempt to scale up the procedure to produce larger (kg) quantities of coated sand. Titration experiments examined the effects of (1) varying the molar ratio of Na lactate to KMnO4, (2) varying the rate at which the titration was accomplished, and (3) varying the concentration (molarity) of the original KMnO4 solution. The results of this work led to an optimal approach utilizing 0.32 M KMnO4 solution that was titrated to a final lactate:permanganate ratio of ∼1.1 with 10% of the lactate being added every 10 min while the suspension was being stirred. The proportion of sand to an initial solution was also increased 5–20 fold to between 50 and 200 g per 100 mL of solution. Applying this method and using a large 20‐ to 30‐L reaction vessel yields sands coated with up to 0.7% Mn in batches 5–10 kg is size, which could be useful as an amendment in mesocosm scale studies, or as a component of treatment filter beds. The examination of various size fractions of the coated sands demonstrated that more Mn was coated on finer sand fractions, which appears to be a function of the particle surface area available for the coating of Mn oxides, and at a rate of 0.3–0.5 µg Mn mm−2 of the particle surface. Water scarcity presents a formidable challenge to agriculture, particularly in arid, semiarid, and rainfed settings. In agricultural contexts, hydrogels serve as granular agents for water retention, undergoing considerable expansion upon water exposure. They assume versatile roles encompassing soil‐water retention, the dispensation of nutrients and pesticides, seed encapsulation, erosion mitigation, and even food supplementation. This study's objective involves the examination of biochar‐infused hydrogels, fashioned by incorporating vine pruning waste‐derived biochars, and the assessment of swelling behaviors in various aqueous environments encompassing deionized, tap, and saline water at concentrations of 0.5–1%. Characterizations of the vine‐biochars‐VB and biochar‐incorporated hydrogels‐VBHG are executed, with particular attention to their swelling properties across diverse media. As an initial step toward appraising their agricultural relevance, these hydrogels are introduced to a germination medium featuring wheat seeds to discern potential influences on germination dynamics. The maximum swelling capacity of VBHG is recorded in deionized water, tap water at pH 7.0, tap water at pH 9.0, saline water at 0.5%, and saline water at 1%, reaching 352%, 207%, 230%, 522%, and 549%, respectively. Remarkably, the 0.5% VBHG treatment exhibits the most pronounced root elongation. Inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) or biochar (BC) application can improve photosynthesis and promote plant growth under saline‐alkali stress. However, little is known about the effects of the two combined on growth and physiological characteristics of switchgrass under saline‐alkali stress. This study examined the effects of four treatments: (1) no AMF inoculation and no biochar addition (control), (2) biochar (BC) alone, (3) AMF (Rhizophagus irregularis, Ri) alone, and (4) the combination of both (BC+Ri) on the plant biomass, antioxidant enzymes, chlorophyll, and photosynthetic parameters of switchgrass under saline‐alkali stress. The results showed that the above‐ground, belowground and total biomass of switchgrass in the BC+Ri treatment group was significantly higher (+136.7%, 120.2% and 132.4%, respectively) than in other treatments compared with Control. BC+Ri treatment significantly increased plant leaves' relative chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and photosynthesis parameters. It is worth noting that the transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, net photosynthetic rate, PSII efficiency and other photosynthetic‐related indexes of the BC+Ri treatment group were the highest (38% to 54% higher than other treatments). The fitting results of light response and CO2 response curves showed that the light saturation point, light compensation point, maximum carboxylation rate and maximum electron transfer rate of switchgrass in the Ri+BC treatment group were the highest. In conclusion, biochar combined with Ri has potential beneficial effects on promoting switchgrass growth under saline‐alkali stress and improving the activity of antioxidant enzymes and photosynthetic characteristics of plants. Electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting are effective pathways for energy conversion to overcome from the reliance on the depletion fossil fuels and preclude the severe degradation of global climate. The review begins with the basic principle and mechanisms involved in both electro/photocatalysis of water splitting. Graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) is an interesting catalyst for water splitting due to its layered conjugated metal free semiconductor, owing to its unique physicochemical characteristics. However to improve some of the features of g‐C3N4 including long term stability, large active sites, electronic band structure, low recombination rate of photogenerated charges, and many more, interface engineering with different materials have been introduced to improve the catalytic activity. The review emphasizes the basics of g‐C3N4 with its interesting properties such as chemical and thermal stability, large surface area, unique optoelectronic properties, exfoliated layered structure, and tunable surface functional groups. The various strategies that have been used to modulate catalytic activity of this material are discussed, including morphology modulation, elemental doping, interface engineering with metals, and semiconductors. Efficient energy storage systems are crucial for the optimal utilization of renewable energy. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are considered potential substitutes for next‐generation low‐cost energy storage systems due to the low cost and abundance of sodium resources. However, the industrialization of SIBs faces a great challenge in terms of the anode. Hard carbon could be a promising anode material due to its high capacity and low cost which originates from biomass. This study used pre‐treatment and template carbonization methods to extract a hard carbon material from a large amount of discarded biomass in bamboo powder waste. This material has a good initial Coulombic efficiency of 78.6 % and good cycling stability when applied to sodium ion batteries.Typically, the optimal hard carbon material is used as the anode to prepare sodium ion battery prototypes to demonstrate their potential applications. The anode exhibited excellent sodium storage performance with a reversible capacity of 303 mAh ⋅ g−1 at 1 C rate and good cycling performance, retaining 92.0 % of its capacity after 100 cycles. These results demonstrate that BPPHC is a promising candidate for anode material in sodium‐ion batteries. This work suggests that bamboo powder could be a low‐cost anode material for SIBs. Metal‐loaded biochar (BC) catalytic systems are widely used for the removal of organic pollutants. However, there is still a lack of relevant research on the impact of different preparation conditions on the performance of synthetic materials. In the present research, CuO and Fe2O3 were loaded on the surface of Ginkgo biloba BC by a hydrothermal method and a chemical co‐precipitation method to prepare carbon‐based metal catalytic materials. Bisphenol A (BPA) was selected as the target pollutant to study the activation effect of the metal‐loaded BC to persulfate (PS). The results showed that the catalytic performance of the CuO/BC materials was better than that of Fe2O3/BC and Fe2O3/CuO/BC. By exploring the influence of the preparation process on the catalytic performance, it can be obtained that the optimal calcination temperature was 350°C and the optimal loading ratio was 2.5:1(w/w) for CuO/BC materials. The CuO/BC prepared under this condition could remove 81.5% of BPA within 60 min. Carbon content is a key property of soils with importance for all ecosystem functions. Measures to increase soil carbon storage are suggested with the aim to compensate for agricultural emissions. In Norway, where soils have relatively high carbon content because of the cold climate, adapting management practices that prevent the loss of carbon to the atmosphere in response to climate change is also important. This work presents an overview of the potential for carbon sequestration in Norway from a wide range of agricultural management practices and provides recommendations based on certainty in the reported potential, availability of the technology, and likelihood for implementation by farmers. In light of the high priority assigned to increased food production and degree of self‐sufficiency in Norway, the following measures were considered: (1) utilization of organic resources, (2) use of biochar, (3) crop diversification and the use of cover crops, (4) use of plants with larger and deeper root systems, (5) improved management of meadows, (6) adaptive grazing of productive grasslands (7) managing grazing in extensive grasslands, (8) altered tillage practices, and (9) inversion of cultivated peat with mineral soil. From the options assessed, the use of cover crops scored well on all criteria evaluated, with a higher sequestration potential than previously estimated (0.2 Mt CO2‐equivalents annually). Biochar has the largest potential in Norway (0.9 Mt CO2‐equivalents annually, corresponding to 20% of Norwegian agricultural emissions and 2% of total national emissions), but its readiness level is not yet achieved despite interest from industry to apply this technology at large scale. Extensive grazing and the use of deep‐rooted plants also have the potential for increasing carbon storage, but there is uncertainty regarding their implementation and the quantification of effects from adapting these measures. Based on the complexities of implementation and the expected impacts within a Norwegian context, promising options with substantial payoff are few. Film mulching and biochar have been applied as effective measures for increasing crop yields in arid and semi‐arid areas for many years. However, the effects of the temporal and spatial distributions of soil hydrothermal properties on crop yields are still unclear under film mulching and biochar addition. Thus, we conducted a field experiment with winter wheat on the Loess Plateau of China for two years (2020–2022) with three treatments: control, film mulching, and biochar. The results demonstrated that film mulching and biochar addition increased the average soil temperature in the 0–50 cm soil depth throughout the whole growth period and the influence depth exceeded 50 cm. Biochar addition only significantly increased soil temperature in the overwintering stage (p < 0.05). Film mulching increased the maximum and minimum temperatures in the 0–50 cm soil depth at seedling stage. Film mulching and biochar increased average ≥10°C accumulated soil temperature by increasing the ≥10°C accumulated soil temperature in the daytime and nighttime, and the number of days with a daily soil temperature ≥10°C during the whole growth period. Film mulching improved soil water storage in the 0–300 cm soil depth in each growth stage during both years, and also increased the wheat grain yield, aboveground biomass, and water use efficiency. Biochar addition increased the wheat grain yield and aboveground biomass of two years compared with control, but the increases were not significant (p > 0.05). In addition, correlation analysis showed that adequate temperatures in the 0–50 cm soil depth during the seedling and overwintering stages, and suitable soil moisture conditions in the 0–300 cm soil depth before sowing, jointing, and filling stages were important factors for increasing wheat grain yields under film mulching. In summary, film mulching mainly regulated the soil temperature in the 0–50 cm soil depth and moisture conditions in the 0–300 cm soil depth during different growth stages to increase grain yields. Film mulching has more obvious effects on moisture regulation, temperature regulation, and yield increases than biochar addition. Some environmentally friendly measures (such as conservation agriculture) with the same yield improving effect as mulching are also recommended to explore and promote in theLoess Plateau region. Soil salinization is a common form of land degradation in coastal regions. The Yellow River Delta is a typical coastal saline‐alkali soils distribution region, with saline‐alkali soils accounting for nearly half of the total area of the region. In view of the lack of fresh water in the region, the use of brackish water and biochar made from agricultural waste to improve coastal saline‐alkali soils has a good application prospect, but there are fewer studies on this at present. To explore water conservation, fertilization, and yield enhancement solutions appropriate for saline‐alkali soils in the Yellow River Delta region, this study focused on investigating the impact of biochar addition on the fertility, enzyme activity, and winter wheat yield in saline‐alkali soils under brackish water irrigation conditions. The research was conducted through outdoor potting experiments, utilizing a local moderately saline‐alkali soil as the subject of study. The study design established three different irrigation water mineralization levels (0, 2, and 4 g L−1) during the research. Two types of biochar, wheat straw biochar (WB) and corn straw biochar (CB) were used with four different applications (0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha−1). There were 21 treatments; each replicated three times. The research findings indicated that brackish water irrigation adversely affected soil fertility and soil alkaline phosphatase activity and soil sucrase activity but increased soil urease activity and soil peroxidase activity. In contrast, biochar application improved soil fertility and enzyme activities. The soil fertility and enzyme activities of K2Y10 treatment was higher than that of CK (fresh water, no biochar application) except for soil total nitrogen, which increased by 5.5%–71.2%. While brackish water irrigation decreased winter wheat yield. Biochar application increased winter wheat yield, with the K2Y10 treatment showing the highest yield under brackish water irrigation conditions, and increased by 17.7% compared to CK. In conclusion, the study recommends a combination of water‐saving measures, fertilizer cultivation, and yield increase strategies to improve saline‐alkali soils in the Yellow River Delta region effectively. Specifically, irrigating with 2 g L−1 brackish water and application 10 t ha−1 of CB demonstrated greater efficacy in addressing the challenges of saline‐alkali soils in the region. Increasing scientific knowledge on the improvement of coastal saline soils is critical for spatially expanding coastal development. Biochar and polyacrylamide (PAM) are popular soil amendments, however, it remains unclear how they affect water and salt transport by regulating soil microstructure characteristics. In this study, we conducted a five‐year rice barrel trial and investigated the changes in the aggregates and microstructure of saline soils after adding biochar with three different application rates (B1 = 0%, B2 = 2%, and B3 = 5%, mass ratio) and PAM with three different application rates (P1 = 0%, P2 = 0.4‰, and P3 = 1.0‰, mass ratio), and simulated the water and salt transport. Results showed that at B1 and B2 treatments, soil μ‐CT porosity in 2020 increased by 89.8% and 208.0%, respectively, with respect to that in 2016. The development of soil mesopore structure was promoted at B2 treatments, whereas the P2 and P3 treatments promoted the development of the soil macrostructure. Compared with those of the blank control, soil internal mean water flow rate increased by 22.2% at B2 treatments and 69.2% at P2 treatments, respectively. However, their increases were less pronounced at B3 treatments and the water flow rate decreased by 50.5% at P3 treatments. It might be reasonably attributed to the reason that porous biochar helped the formation of soil pore structure while an excessive amount of biochar blocked soil pores. Furthermore, PAM amendment helped to form soil aggregates while an excessive amount of viscous PAM might block soil pores or form a viscous layer. The time corresponding to the maximum salt concentration was negatively correlated with soil μ‐CT porosity (R2 = 0.27) and pore connectivity density (R2 = 0.29). Our findings indicate that appropriate amounts of biochar and PAM can help improve saline soil structure in coastal areas, improve their hydraulic properties, and alleviate salt stress. Natural fiber‐reinforced composites (NFRCs) suffer from water absorption and low temperature stability, resulting in fiber degradation and subsequent material failure. Built‐in piezoresistive sensors are investigated to monitor the deformation/strain of the component. As a low‐cost material from renewable resources biochar particles derived from olive stones were applied on flax plies and yarn bundles that served as model systems. Carbon black samples as petrochemical variants were used as a reference material. Biochar and carbon black‐covered fiber systems were laminated in epoxy resin followed by tensile tests. The electrical resistance was recorded simultaneously during testing. Biochar with a broad size distribution from nano to high micrometer range (D < 200 μm) was superior in sensor performance compared to carbon black and biochar with a smaller particle size range D < 20 μm. Gauge factors (GF) of NFRC samples with integrated biochar particles reached 30–80 while carbon black could not exceed a GF of 8. To obtain maximum GFs, yarn count of flax yarn/ply substrate should be as thin as possible, but still enable percolation of the adhering particle network. Comparatively large particle size was identified as a contributing factor enabling the high GF for coarse biochar compared to carbon black. This article explored the influence of curtain climber fiber and Biochar derived from Kigelia pinnata fruit fiber on a polyepoxide‐based composite material's thermal, mechanical, dielectric, and mechanical properties. Before commencing the composite production process, the surface of the curtain climber fiber underwent treatment with a solution consisting of 5% silane to enhance the bonding between the fiber and the matrix. The hand layup method and compression molding were used to produce the composite panels and tested according to the appropriate standards set by the ASTM. According to these findings, the mechanical properties of the composites were enhanced by adding 30% curtain climber fiber and 5% biochar. The load distribution on the fiber was consistent throughout. The composite's highest strength (EFB3) was 183 MPa, its modulus was 5.9 GPa, and its flexural strength and modulus were 216 MPa and 6.1 GPa, respectively. The impact intensity is 8 J, and the hardness value is 95 on the Shore D scale. In addition, the EFB3 had a maximum interlaminar shear strength of 35 MPa. According to the findings of the SEM surface analysis, the matrix molecules exhibit adhesion to the fiber, which indicates increased bonding. The thermal conductivity and dielectric properties were high for composite with higher biochar particle content. These waste biomass‐converted fruit fiber biochar and curtain climber industrial crop fiber epoxide composite materials may be utilized in a variety of sectors, including aerospace, automotive, household domestic product manufacturing, and defense sectors. Phosphorus is an important element for plant growth. The efficient use and recovery of phosphorus is crucial due to limited phosphate resource reserves. This study explored the potential application of an in situ Ca and Mg co‐doped biochar derived from tobacco stem to reclaim and reuse phosphate from aqueous solutions. We performed various batch adsorption experiments and industrial analysis based on different parameters. The findings indicate that biochar prepared using the raw material particle size range of 0.85–2 mm and pyrolyzed at 800 °C presented good pore structure and specific surface area. Ca and Mg elements in biochar exhibited great influence on its phosphate adsorption property. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of the tobacco stem‐based biochar was 54.66 mg/g, and the experimental data agreed with the Langmuir equation, suggesting monolayer adsorption. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic equation, indicating that chemisorption was the dominant adsorption process and that the adsorption was controlled by intra‐particle diffusion. Furthermore, phosphate adsorbed on tobacco stem‐based in situ Ca and Mg co‐doped biochar was released under acidic, alkaline, and neutral conditions.
