In this paper, we develop a novel backtrackless aligned-spatial graph convolutional network (BASGCN) model to learn effective features for graph classification. Our idea is to transform arbitrary-sized graphs into fixed-sized backtrackless aligned grid structures and define a new spatial graph convolution operation associated with the grid structures. We show that the proposed BASGCN model not only reduces the problems of information loss and imprecise information representation arising in existing spatially-based graph convolutional network (GCN) models, but also bridges the theoretical gap between traditional convolutional neural network (CNN) models and spatially-based GCN models. Furthermore, the proposed BASGCN model can both adaptively discriminate the importance between specified vertices during the convolution process and reduce the notorious tottering problem of existing spatially-based GCNs related to the Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm, explaining the effectiveness of the proposed model. The Unlimited Sensing Framework (USF) was recently introduced to overcome the sensor saturation bottleneck in conventional digital acquisition systems. At its core, the USF converts a continuous-time high-dynamic-range (HDR) signal into folded, low-dynamic-range, modulo samples and allows the recovery of the HDR signal via algorithmic unfolding. In hardware, however, implementing ideal modulo folding requires careful calibration, analog design and high precision. At the interface of theory and practice, this paper explores a computational sampling strategy that relaxes strict hardware requirements via a novel, mathematically guaranteed reconstruction. We start with a generalized model for USF with two new parameters modeling hysteresis and folding transients in addition to the modulo threshold. Hysteresis accounts for mismatches between the reset threshold and the amplitude displacement at the folding time and the folding transient is a continuous transition period in the implementation of a reset. Both these effects are motivated by our hardware experiments and also occur in previous, domain-specific applications. We show that hysteresis is beneficial for USF and leverage it to derive the first recovery guarantees in the context of our generalized USF model for a certain sampling rate regime. Additionally, we show how the sampling rate requirement can be greatly reduced via a direct generalization of the proposed recovery. Our theoretical work is corroborated by hardware experiments with a hysteresis enabled, modulo ADC testbed comprising off-the-shelf electronic components. Thus, by capitalizing on a collaboration between hardware and algorithms, our paper enables an end-to-end pipeline for HDR sampling allowing more flexible hardware implementations. In this paper, we propose to extend the standard Convolutional Dictionary Learning problem to a tensor representation where the activations are constrained to be “low-rank” through a Canonical Polyadic decomposition. We show that this additional constraint increases the robustness of the CDL with respect to noise and improve the interpretability of the final results. In addition, we discuss in detail the advantages of this representation and introduce two algorithms, based on ADMM or FISTA, that efficiently solve this problem. We show that by exploiting the low rank property of activations, they achieve lower complexity than the main CDL algorithms. This paper aims to explore the performance potential of a novel dual-mode power-split hybrid powertrain. First, the steady-state power split characteristics for the proposed hybrid powertrain in different modes are analyzed. The mode switching strategy is developed to maximize powertrain efficiency, which is verified by using dynamic programming based on direct transmit points (DTPs). Moreover, a novel multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on the decomposition (MOEA/D) method used in a nested way with dynamic programming is proposed to solve the multi-objective optimization of the PS-HEVs for the first time, and the computational efficiency and superiority of the proposed algorithm is compared with the commonly used NSGA-II algorithm. The results show that the MOEA/D based multi-objective optimization framework has similar performance in the search for the Pareto frontier but significantly higher computational efficiency than that of the NSGA-II algorithm. This paper proposes a novel bit loading algorithm to multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems to maximize the system total throughput while satisfying the users’ individual quality of service (QoS) constraints. Although bit loading is generally a non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP)-hard problem, even for orthogonal multiple access (OMA), the mutual interference between the users, and the dependence of power coefficients and modulation orders are additional challenges that add substantial complexity to the optimization problem. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient bit loading algorithm for multicarrier NOMA systems and compare the complexity and throughput with a corresponding OMA system. The obtained results show that for the case of NOMA, bit loading provides an additional degree of freedom that allows non-uniform spectrum sharing among the users. In particular scenarios, the system may experience hybrid modes of operation, where the system switches between NOMA and OMA. The obtained numerical results show that NOMA can outperform OMA by 100% in terms of spectral efficiency, for a two-user scenario. The complexity of the loading process for NOMA is noticeably higher than OMA, which is due to the high complexity associated with the bit error rate (BER) computation in the case of NOMA. Distributed optimization algorithms for security-constrained economic dispatch (SCED) problems have been the subject of significant research interest in recent years. However, existing distributed SCED algorithms can be ineffective in the presence of malicious participants and inefficient in the absence of a coordinator. On the other hand, blockchain, an emerging technique known as the trust machine, has not shown its potential to address the above challenges in state-of-the-art literature. This paper proposes a blockchain-based distributed SCED algorithm. Using blockchain to form a coordination committee and enable balance among committee members, the proposed method allows the use of hierarchical SCED algorithms in the absence of a coordinator and can disable malicious participants. This paper addresses the coexistence problem among multiple wireless body area networks (WBANs), where co-channel interference may occur among different WBANs if the channels are not allocated properly, leading to performance degradation in both energy efficiency and packet transmission reliability. We formulate the channel allocation problem as a graph coloring problem, and develop a solution to increase the co-channel reuse and the number of WBANs with assigned channels. We propose a distributed two-hop incomplete coloring (DTIC) algorithm that adopts a game-theoretic approach to solve the graph coloring problem. The DTIC algorithm exploits two-hop information to enable high channel reuse among two-hop neighbors and allows for incomplete coloring when the number of colors (or channels) is insufficient to color all vertices without conflict. A distributed message-passing protocol is also proposed to achieve collision-free message exchange, and to ensure that consistent coloring information is shared among WBANs. Mobile edge computing becomes a promising technology to mitigate the latency of various cloud services. In addition, network function virtualization (NFV) has been shown a great potential in reducing the operational cost of cloud services while enhancing the flexibility of virtual network function deployments, by implementing dedicated hardware network functions as pieces of software in generic servers. Recently, the GPU acceleration has been investigated to speed up flow processing in virtual network functions (VNFs), by leveraging the parallelism of GPUs. VNFs that need accelerations prefer to stay at cloudlets (locations) equipped with GPUs. However, little attention has been paid for the VNF placement that takes into account GPU-affinity in cloudlets of mobile edge clouds. In this paper, we consider the affinity-aware throughput maximization problem in a mobile edge cloud via leveraging the parallelism on GPUs for user requests with VNF requirements. We consider two types of affinities in the VNF placement: The soft-affinity that allows VNFs to be executed by either CPUs or GPUs in cloudlets; and the hard-affinity that only allows VNFs to be placed to the GPUs of a specified set of cloudlets. We formulate two corresponding VNF placement problems in a mobile edge cloud. Specifically, we first propose an exact solution to the soft-affinity throughput maximization problem by formulating an Integer Linear Program (ILP). We then propose an efficient algorithm for the problem, by proposing a randomized algorithm with a provable approximation ratio for the hard-affinity-aware throughput maximization problem and extending the proposed approximation algorithm to the soft-affinity throughput maximization problem. Furthermore, assuming that user requests arrive into the mobile edge cloud one by one without the knowledge of future arrivals, we devise an online algorithm with a good competitive ratio for this dynamic hard-affinity-aware throughput maximization problem. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms, through simulations and implementations in a real test-bed. –This paper proposes an efficient and optimal reduced control set model predictive flux control (RCS-MPFC) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped voltage source inverter (3L-NPC VSI) fed induction motor. The proposed algorithm reduces the computational time in the prediction stage without causing any suboptimality. The optimal voltage vector selected by the proposed method produces the same cost function value as that of the conventional FCS-MPFC which requires enumerating all 27 voltage vectors. Therefore, the proposed algorithm achieves the same performance as the conventional method in the entire range of operation of IM drives while the computational effort is significantly reduced. This paper proposes a new algorithm, named Householder Dice (HD), for simulating dynamics on dense random matrix ensembles with rotational invariance. Examples include the Gaussian ensemble, the Haar-distributed random orthogonal ensemble, and their complex-valued counterparts. A “direct” approach to the simulation, where one first generates a dense $n \times n$ matrix from the ensemble, requires at least $\mathcal {O}(n^{2})$ resource in space and time. The HD algorithm overcomes this $\mathcal {O}(n^{2})$ bottleneck by using the principle of deferred decisions: rather than fixing the entire random matrix in advance, it lets the randomness unfold with the dynamics. At the heart of this matrix-free algorithm is an adaptive and recursive construction of (random) Householder reflectors. These orthogonal transformations exploit the group symmetry of the matrix ensembles, while simultaneously maintaining the statistical correlations induced by the dynamics. The memory and computation costs of the HD algorithm are $\mathcal {O}(nT)$ and $\mathcal {O}(nT^{2})$ , respectively, with $T$ being the number of iterations. When $T \ll n$ , which is nearly always the case in practice, the new algorithm leads to significant reductions in runtime and memory footprint. The aim of this paper is to investigate the sensorless voltage control schemes for the promising wound-rotor brushless doubly-fed induction generator (BDFIG) in both the stand-alone and grid-connected systems. For sensorless target, a new rotor position observer using the space vector flux relations of BDFIG is suggested. The proposed sensorless algorithm does not require any additional observers for obtaining the generator speed by directly detecting the rotor position, which may reduce the cost of the overall control system. For the voltage control purpose, a direct voltage control (DVC) scheme is applied for the stand-alone systems. However, this control strategy did not handle the control of the generated-voltage phase angle and also did not consider the phase sequence issue which are very essential provisions for the smooth connection target in grid-connected applications. Hence, DVC strategy cannot guarantee all the intended provisions for a soft and smooth connection process with the grid side and therefore, an effective grid-synchronization algorithm is proposed. A comprehensive analysis to confirm the functionality of the proposed control strategies is discussed through both simulation and experimental results. The presented study in this paper verifies the efficacy of the proposed schemes for sensorless voltage control target of BDFIG in both the stand-alone and grid-connected applications with a good transient behavior. This paper derives the maximum achievable sum-rate and presents the optimal encoding/decoding framework for rate-diverse wireless network coding (RD-WNC) over broadband channels consisting of multiple parallel subchannels. RD-WNC applies to a communication scenario in which a base station wants to deliver two different messages with different rates to two users. The base station combines the two separate messages into one network-coded message and broadcasts the network-coded message to both users. Each user then extracts its desired message from the network-coded message by subtracting from it the other message, which we assume to be side information available to the user. Deriving the maximum achievable sum-rate for RD-WNC is challenging when the channel consists of multiple parallel subchannels with different channel coefficients (e.g., the subcarrier channels of OFDM systems), since apart from the rate allocation between the two users, optimal power allocation among multiple subchannels needs to be identified. The first contribution of this paper is a new “mountain-leveling” power allocation algorithm to achieve the maximum sum-rate. With the resulting power allocation, we can then achieve the corresponding optimal sum-rate by having a separate encoding/decoding mechanism for each subchannels, but doing so is cumbersome and complex when the number of subchannels is large. The second contribution of this paper is a practical encoding/decoding framework using only one encoder-decoder mechanism for all subchannels without sacrificing sum-rate optimality. The new generation of the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) video coding standard has improved compression performance and brought considerable coding complexity. Therefore, reducing the perception redundancy of video to obtain a better compression effect is the new direction of video development at present. In this paper, the HEVC is improved and enhanced from the aspects of a video saliency algorithm based on an attention mechanism and a video compression algorithm based on perception priority. In terms of video saliency, this paper proposes a spatial saliency algorithm based on a convolutional neural network and a temporal saliency algorithm based on motion vector. The saliency algorithm can combine the motion estimation results of each block during the HEVC compression on the basis of convolutional neural network and carry out adaptive dynamic fusion of the two, to complete the saliency map of the input video. In the aspect of the video compression algorithm with perception priority, this paper proposes a more flexible QP selection method, which selects its corresponding QP according to the saliency value of CU. At the same time, we propose a new rate-distortion optimization algorithm, which integrates the current block’s saliency feature into the traditional rate-distortion calculation method, to guide the allocation of bits and achieve the purpose of perception priority. The experimental results proved the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art perceptual coding algorithms in terms of saliency detection and perceptual compression quality. This paper revisits the analysis of the well-known infeed effect on transmission lines distance protection. A new adaptive algorithm to overcome this drawback is proposed, which requires solely impedance data and the operational status of power apparatus to perform overreaching distance zones settings. A comparison of the proposed strategy and the traditional one is performed. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed settings ensure the correct operation of overreaching zones. Thereby, the backup coverage is improved significantly, besides avoiding distance zones overlapping between adjacent lines. Many time series data mining problems can be solved with repeated use of distance measure. Examples of such tasks include similarity search, clustering, classification, anomaly detection and segmentation. For over two decades it has been known that the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) distance measure is the best measure to use for most tasks, in most domains. Because the classic DTW algorithm has quadratic time complexity, many ideas have been introduced to reduce its amortized time, or to quickly approximate it. One of the most cited approximate approaches is FastDTW. The FastDTW algorithm has well over a thousand citations and has been explicitly used in several hundred research efforts. In this work, we make a surprising claim. In any realistic data mining application, the approximate FastDTW is much slower than the exact DTW. Vehicle and airborne navigation users are facing more and more complex signal interference and even spoofing. If vehicles and aircraft do not strengthen their anti-spoofing ability, their navigation performance is bound to be adversely affected. global navigation satellite system (GNSS) spoofing technology has gradually become a preferred interference method for spoofer because of its high concealment and great harm. For spoofer, user terminal increasingly adopts GNSS with inertial measurement unit (IMU): tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU, on this basis, user also configures a variety of anti-spoofing techniques to effectively deal with spoofing. Even if spoofer slowly changes user's positioning, if spoofing strategy is unreasonable, it will lead to the violation of parameter rationality of coupled filter output parameters and spoofing observation, which greatly increases the difficulty of spoofing. In view of the above problems, from the perspective of spoofer, in order to effectively counter the non cooperative target of assembling tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU by using GNSS spoofing, this paper establishes GNSS spoofing mathematical model, and proposes a slowly varying spoofing algorithm to avoid tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU with multiple anti-spoofing techniques based on the analysis of the influence mechanism of spoofing on the positioning of tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU, the algorithm proposes a measurement deviation determination method to avoid a variety of anti-spoofing techniques, which can gradually pull the positioning results of coupled system, and successfully avoid anti-spoofing techniques detection of least squares residual receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) and parameter rationality check. The experimental results show that the algorithm can gradually change positioning of tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU within 30 s, and the north, east and down displacements basically achieve the spoofing effect, the errors with the expected offset are −0.5 m, 1.9 m and 12.7 m respectively. At the same time, the detection of the above anti-spoofing techniques is avoided. The mean value of test statistics for tightly-coupled system is reduced by 75.4% and does not exceed the alarm threshold, so as to achieve the purpose of spoofing, the effectiveness and high concealment of the spoofing algorithm are proved. Compressive covariance estimation has arisen as a class of techniques whose aim is to obtain second-order statistics of stochastic processes from compressive measurements. Recently, these methods have been used in various image processing and communications applications, including denoising, spectrum sensing, and compression. Notice that estimating the covariance matrix from compressive samples leads to ill-posed minimizations with severe performance loss at high compression rates. In this regard, a regularization term is typically aggregated to the cost function to consider prior information about a particular property of the covariance matrix. Hence, this paper proposes an algorithm based on the projected gradient method to recover low-rank or Toeplitz approximations of the covariance matrix from compressive measurements. The proposed algorithm divides the compressive measurements into data subsets projected onto different subspaces and accurately estimates the covariance matrix by solving a single optimization problem assuming that each data subset contains an approximation of the signal statistics. Furthermore, gradient filtering is included at every iteration of the proposed algorithm to minimize the estimation error. The error induced by the proposed splitting approach is analytically derived along with the convergence guarantees of the proposed method. The proposed algorithm estimates the covariance matrix of hyperspectral images from synthetic and real compressive samples. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithm can effectively recover the covariance matrix of hyperspectral images from compressive measurements with high compression ratios ($8-15\%$ approx) in noisy scenarios. Moreover, simulations and theoretical results show that the filtering step reduces the recovery error up to twice the number of eigenvectors. Numerous single image super-resolution (SISR) algorithms have been proposed during the past years to reconstruct a high-resolution (HR) image from its low-resolution (LR) observation. However, how to fairly compare the performance of different SISR algorithms/results remains a challenging problem. So far, the lack of comprehensive human subjective study on large-scale real-world SISR datasets and accurate objective SISR quality assessment metrics makes it unreliable to truly understand the performance of different SISR algorithms. We in this paper make efforts to tackle these two issues. Firstly, we construct a real-world SISR quality dataset (i.e., RealSRQ) and conduct human subjective studies to compare the performance of the representative SISR algorithms. Secondly, we propose a new objective metric, i.e., KLTSRQA, based on the Karhunen-Loéve Transform (KLT) to evaluate the quality of SISR images in a no-reference (NR) manner. Experiments on our constructed RealSRQ and the latest synthetic SISR quality dataset (i.e., QADS) have demonstrated the superiority of our proposed KLTSRQA metric, achieving higher consistency with human subjective scores than relevant existing NR image quality assessment (NR-IQA) metrics. In this paper, we leverage reinforcement learning (RL) and cross-layer network coding (CLNC) for efficiently pre-fetching requested contents to the local caches and delivering these contents to requesting users in a downlink fog-radio access network (F-RAN) with device-to-device (D2D) communications. In the considered system, fog access points (F-APs) and cache-enabled D2D (CE-D2D) users are equipped with local caches that alleviate traffic burden at the fronthaul and facilitate rapid delivery of the users’ contents. To this end, the CLNC scheme optimizes the coding decisions, transmission rates, and power levels of both F-APs and CE-D2D users, and RL scheme optimizes caching strategy. A joint content placement and delivery problem is formulated as an optimization problem with a goal to maximize system sum-rate. The problem is an NP-hard problem. To efficiently solve it, we first develop an innovative decentralized CLNC coalition formation (CLNC-CF) switch algorithm to obtain a stable solution for the content delivery problem, where F-APs and CE-D2D users utilize CLNC resource allocation. By considering statistics of channel and users’ content request into account, we then develop a multi-agent RL algorithm for optimizing the content placement at both F-APs and CE-D2D users. Simulation results show that the proposed joint CLNC-CF-RL framework can effectively improve the sum-rate by up to 30%, 60%, and 150%, respectively, compared to: 1) an optimal uncoded algorithm, 2) a standard rate-aware-NC algorithm, and 3) a benchmark classical NC with network-layer optimization. To overcome the bottleneck of unreliable environment sensing caused by sensor failure and obstacle blockage, the cooperation among connected automated vehicles (CAVs) is crucial for the reliable and efficient raw sensing data sharing in order to guarantee the driving safety. Empowered by the narrow beamwidth and high data rate abilities, the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication technology can substantially improve the environment sensing ability among multiple CAVs. In this paper, a mmWave enabled CAVs cooperation algorithm is designed based on the proposed time-division integrated sensing and communication (TD-ISAC) system for raw sensing data sharing among CAVs. Considering various computing abilities at vehicle and infrastructure, a closed-form solution to the V2V or V2V/V2I cooperative communication mode selection is theoretically achieved based on response delay analysis to guarantee the timeliness of raw sensing data sharing. And the age of information based system status update algorithm is proposed for the V2V/V2I collaborative communication mode. The feasibility of the proposed TD-ISAC system is verified by simulation and hardware testbed results. Based on simulation results, the proposed communication mode selection algorithm can effectively minimize the response time delay in different conditions. The mmWave enabled TD-ISAC hardware testbed is developed and the position error of target detection can be reduced by 18.5 % using the sensing data fusion from two vehicles, while the communication throughput remains over 2.2 Gbps. The probability Jaccard similarity was recently proposed as a natural generalization of the Jaccard similarity to measure the proximity of sets whose elements are associated with relative frequencies or probabilities. In combination with a hash algorithm that maps those weighted sets to compact signatures which allow fast estimation of pairwise similarities, it constitutes a valuable method for big data applications such as near-duplicate detection, nearest neighbor search, or clustering. This paper introduces a class of one-pass locality-sensitive hash algorithms that are orders of magnitude faster than the original approach. The performance gain is achieved by calculating signature components not independently, but collectively. Four different algorithms are proposed based on this idea. Two of them are statistically equivalent to the original approach and can be used as drop-in replacements. The other two may even improve the estimation error by introducing statistical dependence between signature components. Moreover, the presented techniques can be specialized for the conventional Jaccard similarity, resulting in highly efficient algorithms that outperform traditional minwise hashing and that are able to compete with the state of the art. Degeneracy is an important concept to measure the sparsity of a graph which has been widely used in many network analysis applications. Many network analysis algorithms, such as clique enumeration and truss decomposition, perform very well in graphs having small degeneracies. In this paper, we propose an I/O-efficient algorithm to compute the degeneracy of the massive graph that cannot be fully kept in the main memory. The proposed algorithm only uses $O(n)$ O (n) memory, where $n$ n denotes the number of nodes of the graph. We also develop an I/O-efficient algorithm to incrementally maintain the degeneracy on dynamic graphs. Extensive experiments show that our algorithms significantly outperform the state-of-the-art degeneracy computation algorithms in terms of both running time and I/O costs. The results also demonstrate high scalability of the proposed algorithms. For example, in a real-world web graph with 930 million nodes and 13.3 billion edges, the proposed algorithm takes only 633 seconds and uses less than 4.5GB memory to compute the degeneracy. For vehicle-to-network communications, handover (HO) management enables vehicles to maintain the connection with the network while transiting through coverage areas of different base stations (BSs). However, the high mobility of vehicles means shorter connection periods with each BS that leads to frequent HOs, hence raises the necessity for optimal HO decision making for high quality infotainment services. Machine learning is capable of capturing underlying pattern via data driven methods to find optimal solutions to complex problems, and much learning-based HO optimization research has been conducted focusing on specific network setups. However, attention still needs to be paid to the actual deployment aspect and standardized datasets or simulation environments for evaluation. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning-based HO algorithm using the input parameters that are configurable in the existing measurement report of cellular networks. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using the well-known network simulator ns-3 with its official LTE module. A realistic network setup in the city center of Glasgow (U.K.) is configured with vehicle trajectories generated by the routes mobility model using Google Maps Directions API. Evaluation results reveal that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the A3 RSRP baseline with an average of 25.72% packet loss reduction per HO, suggesting significant improvement in quality of service of phone call and video streaming, etc. The proposed algorithm also has a small implementation cost compared to some state-of-the-art and should be deployed by a software update to a local BS controller. This paper considers stochastic convex optimization problems with two sets of constraints: (a) deterministic constraints on the domain of the optimization variable, which are difficult to project onto; and (b) deterministic or stochastic constraints that admit efficient projection. Problems of this form arise frequently in the context of semidefinite programming as well as when various NP-hard problems are solved approximately via semidefinite relaxation. Since projection onto the first set of constraints is difficult, it becomes necessary to explore projection-free algorithms, such as the stochastic Frank-Wolfe (FW) algorithm. On the other hand, the second set of constraints cannot be handled in the same way, and must be incorporated as an indicator function within the objective function, thereby complicating the application of FW methods. Similar problems have been studied before; however, they suffer from slow convergence rates. This work, equipped with momentum based gradient tracking technique, guarantees fast convergence rates on par with the best-known rates for problems without the second set of constraints. Zeroth-order variants of the proposed algorithms are also developed and again improve upon the state-of-the-art rate results. We further propose the novel trimmed FW variants that enjoy the same convergence rates as their classical counterparts, but are empirically shown to require significantly fewer calls to the linear minimization oracle speeding up the overall algorithm. The efficacy of the proposed algorithms is tested on relevant applications of sparse matrix estimation, clustering via semidefinite relaxation, and uniform sparsest cut problem. Traffic splitting is a required functionality in networks, for example for load balancing over multiple paths or among different servers. The capacities of the servers determine the partition by which traffic should be split. A recent approach implements traffic splitting within the ternary content addressable memory (TCAM), which is often available in switches. It is important to reduce the amount of memory allocated for this task since TCAMs are power consuming and are often also required for other tasks such as classification and routing. Previous work showed how to compute the smallest prefix-matching TCAM necessary to implement a given partition exactly. In this paper we solve the more practical case, where at most $n$ prefix-matching TCAM rules are available, restricting the ability to implement exactly the desired partition. We give simple and efficient algorithms to find $n$ rules that generate a partition closest in $L_\infty $ to the desired one. We do the same for a one-sided version of $L_\infty $ which equals to the maximum overload on a server and for a relative version of it. This paper develops a new control strategy for voltage source converter (VSC) based multi-terminal high voltage dc (MT-HVDC) grids for enhancing the mutual frequency support between MT-HVDC interconnected asynchronous ac systems. The existing droop control structure of VSCs is augmented with an additional feedback voltage-based loop that generates a voltage shifting term to be added to the original dc voltage reference. The addition of this integrator-based controller nullifies the difference between voltage errors seen at adjacent converter stations. This action helps to overcome inaccuracies in the mutual frequency support caused by the uneven voltages across a dc system. The proposed strategy uses only local variables for the continuous-time control; thus, it does not rely on a high-bandwidth communication network, and its performance is not affected by the change of ac systems’ parameters. Modal analysis is carried out to investigate the stability of the proposed controller. In 2014 a number of Capacitor Voltage Transformers (CVTs) exploded in the Swedish transmission grid. To address this problem, data driven methods for continuously monitoring CVTs were developed. Thanks to these methods, CVT capacitor punctures are now regularly noticed and addressed before causing serious damage. This paper describes the algorithms used to make this possible. Detecting all CVT capacitor punctures as they occur increases the transmission system stability, avoids equipment damage, lowers risks to personnel when visiting the substations and makes it possible to correct measurement errors in the energy measurement systems. Automatic supervision scripts, using energy meter data, are running continuously and will alert the service personal immediately when problems occur. With the algorithms proposed in this article, the Swedish National Grid (Svk) has detected many old punctures and expects no future capacitor punctures to go undetected. Detection of the high impedance fault caused by vegetation is one of the biggest challenges brought by the usage of covered conductors in medium voltage overhead power lines. One of the accompanying events of long-term contact of vegetation with the XLPE insulation is partial discharge which damages the insulation. Current systems for the detection of partial discharge have two major problems: the price and difficult installation. In this paper, an approach for the detection of the partial discharge from the data collected by the antenna is described. This approach is focused on the small computational demand and low false positive rate. Thanks to the small computational requirements, it can be run on the remote gateway devices which are collecting the data from the antenna. It is composed of four steps: outlier detection, outlier clustering, feature extraction, and classification. It is shown that this approach greatly improves the detection rate and lowers false positives compared to the previous algorithm used for partial discharge detection based on the data from an antenna, making it fit to use in the production environment. In this paper we provide a theoretical and numerical comparison of convergence rates of forward-backward, Douglas-Rachford, and Peaceman-Rachford algorithms for minimizing the sum of a convex proper lower semicontinuous function and a strongly convex differentiable function with Lipschitz continuous gradient. Our results extend the comparison made in [1], when both functions are smooth, to the context where only one is assumed differentiable. Optimal step-sizes and rates of the three algorithms are compared theoretically and numerically in the context of texture segmentation problem, obtaining very sharp estimations and illustrating the high efficiency of Peaceman-Rachford splitting. In this paper, we design and analyze Mc2g (Matrix Completion with 2 Graphs), an efficient algorithm that performs matrix completion in the presence of social and item similarity graphs. Mc2g runs in quasilinear time and is parameter free. It is based on spectral clustering and local refinement steps. For the matrix completion problem which possesses additional block structures in its rows and columns, we derive the expected number of sampled entries required for Mc2g to succeed, and further show that it matches an information-theoretic lower bound up to a constant factor for a wide range of parameters. We perform extensive experiments on both synthetic datasets and a semi-real dataset inspired by real graphs. Study of pairwise genetic interactions, such as mutually exclusive mutations, has led to understanding of underlying mechanisms in cancer. Investigation of various combinatorial motifs within networks of such interactions can lead to deeper insights into its mutational landscape and inform therapy development. One such motif called the Between-Pathway Model (BPM) represents redundant or compensatory pathways that can be therapeutically exploited. Finding such BPM motifs is challenging since most formulations require solving variants of the NP-complete maximum weight bipartite subgraph problem. In this paper we design an algorithm based on Integer Linear Programming (ILP) to solve this problem. In our experiments, our approach outperforms the best previous method to mine BPM motifs. Further, our ILP-based approach allows us to easily model additional application-specific constraints. Hard sample selection can effectively improve model convergence by extracting the most representative samples from a training set. However, due to the large capacity of medical images, existing sampling strategies suffer from insufficient exploitation for hard samples or high time cost for sample selection when adopted by 3D patch-based models in the field of multi-organ segmentation. In this paper, we present a novel and effective online hard patch mining (OHPM) algorithm. In our method, an average shape model that can be mapped with all training images is constructed to guide the exploration of hard patches and aggregate feedback from predicted patches. The process of hard mining is formalized as a multi-armed bandit problem and solved with bandit algorithms. With the shape model, OHPM requires negligible time consumption and can intuitively locate difficult anatomical areas during training. The employment of bandit algorithms ensures online and sufficient hard mining. We integrate OHPM with advanced segmentation networks and evaluate them on two datasets containing different anatomical structures. Comparative experiments with other sampling strategies demonstrate the superiority of OHPM in boosting segmentation performance and improving model convergence. It is common for communities in real-world networks to possess hierarchical and overlapping structures, which make community detection even more challenging. In this paper, by investigating consensus process of the classical DeGroot model in opinion dynamics, we propose a novel method based on the cumulative opinion distance (COD) to discover hierarchical and overlapping communities. It is shown that this method is different from those classical algorithms relying on static fitness metrics that depict the inhomogeneous connectivity across the network. The proposed method is validated from two aspects. First, by estimating the eigenvectors of adjacency matrices, we investigate the detectability limit of our algorithms on random networks, which together with the results concerning the convergence speed of consensus guarantees the performance of our method theoretically. Second, experiments on both large scale real-world networks and artificial benchmarks show that our method is very effective and competitive on hierarchical modular graphs. This paper considers the hybrid precoder design in millimeter wave (mmWave) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with low-resolution analog phase shifters. Aiming at reducing the complexities of the near-optimal algorithms, we propose a low-complexity multi-user hybrid precoding scheme based on tree-coding-aided adaptive-cross-entroy (TC-ACE) algorithm. By defining some discrete variables for the analog precoders and combiners, the problem of hybrid precoding is transformed into a cross-entroy (CE) optimization problem, which can be solved by iteratively updating the probability distributions of the predefined discrete variables. In order to derive the closed-form expression of the probability distributions, tree-coding is used to encode each entry of the analog precoders and combiners with a binary number. Through iterations, optimal analog precoders and combiners will be obtained when its probabilities are sufficiently high. Simulation results show that when the number of users exceeds a certain value, the proposed scheme outperforms the alternating minimization algorithm and coordinate descent method in terms of both the sum-rate and complexity. As an essential problem in computer vision, salient object detection (SOD) has attracted an increasing amount of research attention over the years. Recent advances in SOD are predominantly led by deep learning-based solutions (named deep SOD). To enable in-depth understanding of deep SOD, in this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey covering various aspects, ranging from algorithm taxonomy to unsolved issues. In particular, we first review deep SOD algorithms from different perspectives, including network architecture, level of supervision, learning paradigm, and object-/instance-level detection. Following that, we summarize and analyze existing SOD datasets and evaluation metrics. Then, we benchmark a large group of representative SOD models, and provide detailed analyses of the comparison results. Moreover, we study the performance of SOD algorithms under different attribute settings, which has not been thoroughly explored previously, by constructing a novel SOD dataset with rich attribute annotations covering various salient object types, challenging factors, and scene categories. We further analyze, for the first time in the field, the robustness of SOD models to random input perturbations and adversarial attacks. We also look into the generalization and difficulty of existing SOD datasets. Finally, we discuss several open issues of SOD and outline future research directions. In context to high-dimensional clustering, the concept of feature weighting has gained considerable importance over the years to capture the relative degrees of importance of different features in revealing the cluster structure of the dataset. However, the popular techniques in this area either fail to perform feature selection or do not preserve the simplicity of Lloyd’s heuristic to solve the $k$ k -means problem and the like. In this paper, we propose a Lasso Weighted $k$ k -means ($LW$ L W - $k$ k -means) algorithm, as a simple yet efficient sparse clustering procedure for high-dimensional data where the number of features ($p$ p ) can be much higher than the number of observations ($n$ n ). The $LW$ L W - $k$ k -means method imposes an $\ell _1$ ℓ 1 regularization term involving the feature weights directly to induce feature selection in a sparse clustering framework. We develop a simple block-coordinate descent type algorithm with time-complexity resembling that of Lloyd’s method, to optimize the proposed objective. In addition, we establish the strong consistency of the $LW$ L W - $k$ k -means procedure. Such an analysis of the large sample properties is not available for the conventional sparse $k$ k -means algorithms, in general. $LW$ L W - $k$ k -means is tested on a number of synthetic and real-life datasets and through a detailed experimental analysis, we find that the performance of the method is highly competitive against the baselines as well as the state-of-the-art procedures for center-based high-dimensional clustering, not only in terms of clustering accuracy but also with respect to computational time. Future quadratic programming (FQP) is an interesting and challenging topic due to its unknown future information and time-dependent feature. In this paper, a continuous-time zeroing neurodynamics (CTZN) model for quadratic programming is first obtained via zeroing neurodynamics (ZN) method. Then, a general four-step Zhang et al. discretization formula is presented and adopted to discretize the above CTZN model, and thus the general four-step discrete-time ZN (DTZN) algorithm for the FQP is developed. For comparison, a three-step DTZN algorithm and a one-step DTZN algorithm for the FQP are also presented. It is worth noting that there is an important parameter termed stepsize in the DTZN algorithms, which is closely related to their stability. If the value of stepsize is outside its effective interval, the DTZN algorithms are impossible to achieve convergence in terms of residual errors, which leads to failure of the FQP problem solving. By utilizing bilinear transformation and Routh stability criterion, the effective stepsize interval of the general four-step DTZN algorithm is confirmed via theoretical proof. Besides, numerical results substantiate the effectiveness and superiority of the general four-step DTZN algorithm as well as the accuracy of the effective stepsize interval. Finally, the general four-step DTZN algorithm is applied to fulfill the path-tracking control of different robot manipulators, with the effectiveness and superiority further validated. The analysis of subtle deviations between different versions of historical prints has been a long-standing challenge in art history research. So far, this challenge has required extensive domain knowledge, fine-tuned expert perception, and time-consuming manual labor. In this paper we introduce an explorative visual approach to facilitate fast and accurate support for the task of comparing differences between prints such as engravings and woodcuts. To this end, we have developed a customized algorithm that detects similar stroke-patterns in prints and matches them in order to allow visual alignment and automated deviation highlighting. Our visual analytics system enables art history researchers to quickly detect, document, and categorize qualitative and quantitative discrepancies, and to analyze these discrepancies using comprehensive interactions. To evaluate our approach, we conducted a user study involving both experts on historical prints and laypeople. Using our new interactive technique, our subjects found about 20 percent more differences compared to regular image viewing software as well as “paper-based” comparison. Moreover, the laypeople found the same differences as the experts when they used our system, which was not the case for conventional methods. This paper integrates an estimation of distribution (EoD)-based update operator into decomposition-based multiobjective evolutionary algorithms for binary optimization. The probabilistic model in the update operator is a probability vector, which is adaptively learned from historical information of each subproblem. We show that this update operator can significantly enhance decomposition-based algorithms on a number of benchmark problems. Moreover, we apply the enhanced algorithms to the constrained optimal software product selection (OSPS) problem in the field of search-based software engineering. For this real-world problem, we give its formal definition and then develop a new repair operator based on satisfiability solvers. It is demonstrated by the experimental results that the algorithms equipped with the EoD operator are effective in dealing with this practical problem, particularly for large-scale instances. The interdisciplinary studies in this paper provide a new real-world application scenario for constrained multiobjective binary optimizers and also offer valuable techniques for software engineers in handling the OSPS problem. Collaborative control of power converters operating in microgrids with unbalanced single-phase loads is difficult to achieve, considering that the voltages and currents have positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence components. In this paper, a new control scheme for collaborative control of four-leg microgrids is proposed. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is simplicity, because the sharing of the powers produced by the positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence voltage and currents is simple to achieve using the easy to implement and well-known droop control algorithms, i.e., as those based on $P$ – $\omega$ and $Q$ – $v$ droop control. The proposed droop algorithms do not require high bandwidth communication channels and the application of virtual impedances, whose design usually demands extensive simulation work, is not required. Three secondary control systems are also analyzed, discussed, and implemented in this paper to regulate the frequency, voltage, and phase at the point of common coupling (PCC), to achieve a balanced 50-Hz three-phase voltage supply in the PCC during steady-state operation. For these secondary control systems, single-phase phase-locked loop based on quadrature signal generators are implemented. Small signal modeling and design are discussed in this paper. In one of the several manifestations, the future cellular networks are required to accommodate a massive number of devices, several orders of magnitude compared to today’s networks. At the same time, the future cellular networks will have to fulfill stringent latency constraints. To that end, one problem that is posed as a potential showstopper is extreme congestion for requesting uplink scheduling over the physical random access channel (PRACH). Indeed, such congestion drags along scheduling delay problems. In this paper, the use of self-organized device-to-device (D2D) clustering is advocated for mitigating PRACH congestion. To this end, this paper proposes two D2D clustering schemes, namely, random-based clustering and channel-gain-based clustering. Accordingly, this paper sheds light on random access within the proposed D2D clustering schemes and presents a case study based on a stochastic geometry framework. For the sake of objective evaluation, the D2D clustering is benchmarked by the conventional scheduling request procedure. Accordingly, this paper offers insights into useful scenarios that minimize the scheduling delay for each clustering scheme. This paper deals with stabilization of an ideal transformer model (ITM) circuit, used as an interfacing algorithm for hardware-in-the-loop simulations. The ITM allows for the distribution of simulation model computations over multiple processors or can be used in power hardware-in-the-loop simulations. When specific impedance conditions of the partitioned circuit are not met, this interfacing algorithm becomes unstable. This paper first presents a new theoretical approach for representing the ITM interfacing algorithm that is based on delay differential equations. With a stability analysis of the obtained time-delay system, a stabilization method is proposed, which increases the stability boundaries of the ITM algorithm. In this paper, we consider the development of algorithms for the automatic detection of buried threats using ground penetrating radar (GPR) measurements. GPR is one of the most studied and successful modalities for automatic buried threat detection (BTD), and a large variety of BTD algorithms have been proposed for it. Despite this, large-scale comparisons of GPR-based BTD algorithms are rare in the literature. In this paper, we report the results of a multi-institutional effort to develop advanced BTD algorithms for a real-world GPR BTD system. The effort involved five institutions with substantial experience with the development of GPR-based BTD algorithms. In this paper, we report the technical details of the advanced algorithms submitted by each institution, representing their latest technical advances, and many state-of-the-art GPR-based BTD algorithms. We also report the results of evaluating the algorithms from each institution on the large experimental data set used for development. The experimental data set comprised 120 000 m2 of GPR data using surface area, from 13 different lanes across two U.S. test sites. The data were collected using a vehicle-mounted GPR system, the variants of which have supplied data for numerous publications. Using these results, we identify the most successful and common processing strategies among the submitted algorithms, and make recommendations for GPR-based BTD algorithm design. This paper examines the problem of predictive gear scheduling for fuel consumption minimization in connected/automated heavy trucks. The literature highlights the fuel economy benefits of such predictive scheduling, but there is a need to optimize such scheduling online, in real time. To address this need, we begin by using dynamic programming (DP) to schedule gear shifting offline, in a manner that achieves a globally optimal Pareto tradeoff between the conflicting objectives of minimizing fuel consumption and shift frequency. The computational cost of DP is unfavorable for online implementation, but we present two algorithms addressing this challenge. Both algorithms rely on the fact that in the Pareto limit where fuel consumption minimization is the sole objective, DP furnishes a simple static shift map. Our first algorithm trains a recurrent neural network to prune the shift schedule generated by this map. The second algorithm performs this pruning in a direct manner tailored to reduce the schedule's rain flow count. We simulate these algorithms for different drive cycles. Both algorithms achieve a reasonable tradeoff between fuel consumption and gear shift frequency. This paper studies the convergence properties of the well-known message-passing algorithm for convex optimisation. Under the assumption of pairwise separability and scaled diagonal dominance, asymptotic convergence is established and a simple bound for the convergence rate is provided for message-passing. In comparison with previous results, our results do not require the given convex program to have known convex pairwise components and that our bound for the convergence rate is tighter and simpler. Future wireless networks need to support massive machine type communication (mMTC) where a massive number of devices accesses the network and massive MIMO is a promising enabling technology. Massive access schemes have been studied for co-located massive MIMO arrays. In this paper, we investigate the activity detection in grant-free random access for mMTC in cell-free massive MIMO networks using distributed arrays. Each active device transmits a non-orthogonal pilot sequence to the access points (APs) and the APs send the received signals to a central processing unit (CPU) for joint activity detection. The maximum likelihood device activity detection problem is formulated and algorithms for activity detection in cell-free massive MIMO are provided to solve it. The simulation results show that the macro diversity gain provided by the cell-free architecture improves the activity detection performance compared to co-located architecture when the coverage area is large. Due to the advantage of capacity-achieving, polar codes have been extended to the block fading channel whereas most constructions involve complex iterative-calculation. In this paper, we establish a systematic framework to analyze the error performance of polar codes in the case of block mapping and random mapping. For both the mappings, by introducing the new concept, named split polar spectrum, we derive the upper bound on the error probability of polarized channel which explicitly reveals the relationship between the diversity order $L$ and the block-wise weight distribution of the codeword. For the special case $L=2$ in the block mapping, we design the enumeration algorithm to calculate the exact split polar spectrum based on the general MacWilliams identities. For arbitrary diversity order in the random mapping, with the help of uniform interleaving, we derive the approximate split polar spectrum by combining the polar spectrum and the probability of fading pattern for a specific weight. Furthermore, we propose the design criteria to construct polar codes over the block fading channel. The full diversity criterion is the primary target to achieve the diversity gain and the product distance criterion requires to maximize the product of the block-wise Hamming distance whereby obtain the coding gain. Guided by these design criteria, the construction metrics, respectively named polarized diversity weight (PDW) and simplified PDW (SPDW) are proposed to designpolar codes in both mappings. This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for robust sensor placement with the purpose of recovering a source signal from noisy measurements. To model uncertainty on the spatially-variant sensors gain and on the spatially correlated noise, we assume that both are realizations of Gaussian processes. Since the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is also uncertain in this context, to achieve a robust signal extraction, we propose a new placement criterion based on the maximization of the probability that the SNR exceeds a given threshold. This criterion can be easily evaluated using the Gaussian process assumption. Moreover, to reduce the computational complexity of the joint maximization of the criterion with respect to all sensor positions, we suggest a sequential maximization approach, where the sensor positions are chosen one at a time. Finally, we present numerical results showing the superior robustness of the proposed approach when compared to standard sensor placement criteria aimed at interpolating the spatial gain and to a recently proposed criterion aimed at maximizing the average SNR.
