The article discusses the Girls'' Tomato Club Movement, organized by South Carolina schoolteacher Marie Samuella Cromer in 1910 to promote teaching girls living in the Southern States how to grow better tomatoes, as well as become better women and wives. The author also discusses the early 20th century history of agricultural youth groups; the establishment of the 4-H, the American youth program designed to foster agricultural knowledge; the establishment of state-based agricultural extensions; and Southern food.
