Abstract

The article discusses music piracy in the southern United States during the 1970s. The author describes the history of bootlegging alcohol in the southern U.S. and legislation against bootlegging is discussed. Special attention is paid to bootlegger Jerrold (Jerry) Pettus, and the legal aspects of sound recordings aimed at mimicking songs produced by other musicians are noted. Other topics include intellectual property and anti-monopoly laws and the connection between bootlegging and counterculture in the southern U.S.
