We study the Förster resonant energy transfer rate, absorption and emission spectra in multichromophoric systems. The multichromophoric Förster theory (MCFT) is determined from an overlap integral of generalized matrices related to the donor's emission and acceptor's absorption spectra, which are obtained via a full 2nd-order cumulant expansion technique developed in this work. We calculate the spectra and MCFT rate for both localized and delocalized systems, and calibrate the analytical 2nd-order cumulant expansion with the exact stochastic path integral method. We present three essential findings: (i) The role of the initial entanglement between the donor and its bath is found to be crucial in both the emission spectrum and the MCFT rate. (ii) The absorption spectra obtained by the cumulant expansion method are nearly identical to the exact spectra for both localized and delocalized systems, even when the system-bath coupling is far from the perturbative regime. (iii) For the emission spectra, the cumulant expansion can give reliable results for localized systems, but fail to provide reliable spectra of the high-lying excited states of a delocalized system, when the system-bath coupling is large and the thermal energy is small. A numerically exact path integral treatment of the absorption and emission spectra of open quantum systems is presented that requires only the straightforward solution of a stochastic differential equation. The approach converges rapidly enabling the calculation of spectra of large excitonic systems across the complete range of system parameters and for arbitrary bath spectral densities. With the numerically exact absorption and emission operators, one can also immediately compute energy transfer rates using the multi-chromophoric Förster resonant energy transfer formalism. Benchmark calculations on the emission spectra of two level systems are presented demonstrating the efficacy of the stochastic approach. This is followed by calculations of the energy transfer rates between two weakly coupled dimer systems as a function of temperature and system-bath coupling strength. It is shown that the recently developed hybrid cumulant expansion (see Paper II) is the only perturbative method capable of generating uniformly reliable energy transfer rates and emission spectra across a broad range of system parameters. A ring approximation within an internally contracted multireference (MR) Coupled Cluster (CC) framework is worked out and tested. Derivation of equations utilizes MR based, generalized normal ordering and the corresponding generalized Wick-theorem (MR-GWT). Contractions among cluster operators are avoided by adopting a normal ordered exponential ansatz. The original version of the MR ring CC doubles (MR-rCCD) equations [Á. Szabados and Á. Margócsy, Mol. Phys. 115, 2731 (2017)] is rectified in two aspects. On the one hand, over-completeness of double excitations is treated by relying on the concept of frames. On the other hand, restriction on the maximal cumulant rank is lifted from two to four. This is found essential for obtaining reliable correlation corrections to the energy. The MR function underlying the approach is provided by the Generalized Valence Bond (GVB) model. The pair structure of the reference ensures a fragment structure of GVB cumulants. This represents a benefit when evaluating cumulant contractions appearing as a consequence of MR-GWT. In particular, cumulant involving terms remain less expensive than their traditional, pair-contracted counterpart, facilitating an O ( N 6 ) eventual scaling of the proposed MR-rCCD method. In a previous report, we calculated the infrared absorption spectrum and both the isotropic and anisotropic pump-probe signals for the OD stretch of isotopically dilute water in dilauroylphosphatidylcholine (DLPC) multi-bilayers as a function of the lipid hydration level. These results were then compared to recent experimental measurements and are in generally good agreement. In this paper, we will further investigate the structure and dynamics of hydration water using molecular dynamics simulations and calculations of the two-dimensional infrared and vibrational echo peak shift observables for hydration water in DLPC membranes. These observables have not yet been measured experimentally, but future comparisons may provide insight into spectral diffusion processes and hydration water heterogeneity. We find that at low hydration levels the motion of water molecules inside the lipid membrane is significantly arrested, resulting in very slow spectral diffusion. At higher hydration levels, spectral diffusion is more rapid, but still slower than in bulk water. We also investigate the effects of several common approximations on the calculation of spectroscopic observables by computing these observables within multiple levels of theory. The impact of these approximations on the resulting spectra affects our interpretation of these measurements and reveals that, for example, the cumulant approximation, which may be valid for certain systems, is not a good approximation for a highly heterogeneous environment such as hydration water in lipid multi-bilayers. Differing perspectives on the accuracy of three-electron reduced-density-matrix (3-RDM) reconstruction in nonminimal basis sets exist in the literature. This paper demonstrates the accuracy of cumulant-based reconstructions, developed by Valdemoro (V) [F. Colmenero et al., Phys. Rev. A 47, 971 (1993)], Nakatsuji and Yasuda (NY) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1039 (1996)], Mazziotti (M) [Phys. Rev. A 60, 3618 (1999)], and Valdemoro–Tel–Pérez–Romero (VTP) [Many-electron Densities and Density Matrices, edited by J. Cioslowski (Kluwer, Boston, 2000)]. Computationally, we extend previous investigations to study a variety of molecules, including LiH, HF, NH3, H2O, and N2, in Slater-type, double-zeta, and polarized double-zeta basis sets at both equilibrium and nonequilibrium geometries. The reconstructed 3-RDMs, compared with 3-RDMs from full configuration interaction, demonstrate in nonminimal basis sets the accuracy of the first-order expansion (V) as well as the important role of the second-order corrections (NY, M, and VTP). Calculations at nonequilibrium geometries further show that cumulant functionals can reconstruct the 3-RDM from a multireferenced 2-RDM with reasonable accuracy, which is relevant to recent multireferenced formulations of the anti-Hermitian contracted Schrödinger equation (ACSE) and canonical diagonalization. Theoretically, we perform a detailed perturbative analysis of the M functional to identify its second-order components. With these second-order components we connect the M, NY, and VTP reconstructions for the first time by deriving both the NY and VTP functionals from the M functional. Finally, these 3-RDM reconstructions are employed within the ACSE [D. Mazziotti, Phys. Rev. We develop a hybrid cumulant expansion method to account for the system-bath entanglement in the emission spectrum in the multi-chromophoric Förster transfer rate. In traditional perturbative treatments, the emission spectrum is usually expanded with respect to the system-bath coupling term in both real and imaginary time. This perturbative treatment gives a reliable absorption spectrum, where the bath is Gaussian and only the real-time expansion is involved. For the emission spectrum, the initial state is an entangled state of the system plus bath. Traditional perturbative methods are problematic when the excitations are delocalized and the energy gap is larger than the thermal energy, since the second-order expansion cannot predict the displacement of the bath. In the present method, the real-time dynamics is carried out by using the 2nd-order cumulant expansion method, while the displacement of the bath is treated more accurately by utilizing the exact reduced density matrix of the system. Using Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling analysis, the critical behavior of self-assembled rigid rods on triangular and honeycomb lattices at intermediate density has been studied. The system is composed of monomers with two attractive (sticky) poles that, by decreasing temperature or increasing density, polymerize reversibly into chains with three allowed directions and, at the same time, undergo a continuous isotropic-nematic (IN) transition. The determination of the critical exponents, along with the behavior of Binder cumulants, indicate that the IN transition belongs to the q=1 Potts universality class. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A practical method to tackle the sign problem in real-time path integral simulations is proposed based on the multilevel blocking idea. The formulation is made possible by using a cumulant expansion of the action, which in addition to addressing the sign problem, provides an unbiased estimator for the action from a statistically noisy sample of real-time paths. The cumulant formulation also allows the analytical gradients of the action to be computed with little extra computational effort, and it can easily be implemented in a massively parallel environment. In this article, we investigated structural and thermal properties of an amorphous alloy of the Ga-Se system. The amorphous GaSe9 alloy was produced by mechanical alloying and it was studied using EXAFS spectroscopy and cumulant expansion method. We also made reverse Monte Carlo simulations using the total structure factor S(K) obtained from x-ray diffraction and the EXAFS x(k) oscillations on Se and Ga K edges as input data. Several parameters, such as average coordination numbers and interatomic distances, structural and thermal disorders, asymmetry of the partial distribution functions gij(r), and Einstein and Debye temperatures, were determined. The gijE(r) functions were reconstructed from the cumulants C1, C2, and C3 obtained from the Einstein model, and they were compared to the gijRMC(r) functions obtained from the simulations. The simulations also furnished the partial bond angle distribution functions Θijl(cos θ), which describe the angular distribution of bonds between first neighbors, and give information about the kind of structural units present in the alloy. We suggest new strict constraints that the two-particle cumulant matrix should fulfill. The constraints are obtained from the decomposition of (Ŝ2}, previously developed in our laboratory, and the vanishing number of electrons shared by two non-interacting fragments. The conditions impose stringent constraints into the cumulant structure without any need to perform an orbital optimization procedure thus carrying very small or no computational effort. These constraints are tested on the series of Piris natural orbital Junctionals (PNOF), which are among the most accurate ones available in the literature. Interestingly, even though all PNOF cumulants ensure correct overall (Ŝ2} values, none of them is consistent with the local spin structure of systems that dissociate more than one pair of electrons. A careful analysis of the local spin components reveals the most important missing contributions in the cumulant expression thus suggesting a means to improve PNOF5. The constraints provide an inexpensive tool for the construction and testing of cumulant structures that complement previously known conditions such as the N-representability or the square of the total spin angular momentum, (Ŝ2}. A numerically exact Monte Carlo scheme for calculation of open quantum system dynamics is proposed and implemented. The method consists of a Monte Carlo summation of a perturbation expansion in terms of trajectories in Liouville phase-space with respect to the coupling between the excited states of the molecule. The trajectories are weighted by a complex decoherence factor based on the second-order cumulant expansion of the environmental evolution. The method can be used with an arbitrary environment characterized by a general correlation function and arbitrary coupling strength. It is formally exact for harmonic environments, and it can be used with arbitrary temperature. Time evolution of an optically excited Frenkel exciton dimer representing a molecular exciton interacting with a charge transfer state is calculated by the proposed method. We calculate the evolution of the optical coherence elements of the density matrix and linear absorption spectrum, and compare them with the predictions of standard simulation methods. A previously proposed [M. Piris, X. Lopez, F. Ruipérez, J. M. Matxain, and J. M. Ugalde, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 164102 (2011)] formulation of the two-particle cumulant, based on an orbital-pairing scheme, is extended here for including more than two natural orbitals. This new approximation is used to reconstruct the two-particle reduced density matrix (2-RDM) constrained to the D, Q, and G positivity necessary conditions of the N-representable 2-RDM. In this way, we have derived an extended version of the Piris natural orbital functional 5 (PNOF5e). An antisymmetrized product of strongly orthogonal geminals with the expansion coefficients explicitly expressed by the occupation numbers is also used to generate the PNOF5e. The theory is applied to the homolytic dissociation of selected diatomic molecules: H2, LiH, and Li2. The Bader's theory of atoms in molecules is used to analyze the electron density and the presence of non-nuclear maxima in the case of a set of light atomic clusters: Li2, Li+3, Li2 + 4, and H+3 . By using a non-Markovian spectral theory based in the Kubo cumulant expansion technique, we have qualitatively studied the infrared Q branch observed in the fundamental absorption band of HCl diluted in liquid Ar. The statistical parameters of the anisotropic interaction present in this spectral theory were calculated by means of molecular dynamics techniques, and found that the values of the anisotropic correlation times are significantly greater (by a factor of two) than those previously obtained by fitting procedures or microscopic cell models. This fact is decisive for the observation in the theoretical spectral band of a central Q resonance which is absent in the abundant previous researches carried out with the usual theories based in Kubo cumulant expansion techniques. Although the theory used in this work only allows a qualitative study of the Q branch, we can employ it to study the unknown characteristics of the Q resonance which are difficult to obtain with the quantum simulation techniques recently developed. For example, in this study we have found that the Q branch is basically a non-Markovian (or memory) effect produced by the spectral line interferences, where the PR interferential profile basically determines the Q branch spectral shape. Furthermore, we have found that the Q resonance is principally generated by the first rotational states of the first two vibrational levels, those more affected by the action of the dissolvent. We report on a computer simulation study of a Lennard-Jones liquid confined in a narrow slit pore with tunable attractive walls. In order to investigate how freezing in this system occurs, we perform an analysis using different order parameters. Although some of the parameters indicate that the system goes through a hexatic phase, other parameters do not. This shows that to be certain whether a system of a finite particle number has a hexatic phase, one needs to study not only a large system, but also several order parameters to check all necessary properties. We find that the Binder cumulant is the most reliable one to prove the existence of a hexatic phase. We observe an intermediate hexatic phase only in a monolayer of particles confined such that the fluctuations in the positions perpendicular to the walls are less than 0.15 particle diameters, i.e., if the system is practically perfectly 2D. We propose a spin-free approach to the cumulant decomposition of reduced density matrices of singlet and spin-rotation or SU(2) invariant ensemble of nonsinglet states as in [W. Kutzelnigg and D. Mukherjee, J. Chem. Phys. 110, 2800 (1999); 116, 4787 (2002)]. We provide a simple recursive procedure to obtain expressions which relate different spin components of spin-orbital reduced density matrices and cumulants of such states to the spin-free counterparts. These results are used to set up a spin-summation procedure to arrive at a definition of spin-free cumulants of any order. Alternatively, an analytic formula for the spin-free form resulting from a spin summation involving product of two spin-orbital cumulants is derived and its utility in spin-free cumulant decomposition of reduced density matrices is demonstrated. This leads to suitable definitions of spin-free analog of multireference normal ordering and the associated Wicks theorem. The results of this formulation are expected to be useful in investigations of spin-free multireference internally contracted coupled-cluster methods where cumulant approximations to the active reduced density matrices are employed. We have derived a quantum distribution function in terms of cumulants that are expectation values of a (anti)symmetric-ordered product of position and momentum fluctuation operators. The authors have derived coupled equations of motion of cumulants that consist of a symmetric-ordered product of the position and momentum fluctuation operators in one dimension. The key point is the utilization of a position shift operator acting on a potential operator, where the expectation value of the shift operator is evaluated using the cumulant expansion technique. In particular, the equations of motion of the second-order cumulant and the expectation values of the position and momentum operators are given. The resultant equations are expressed by those variables and a quantal potential that consists of an exponential function of the differential operators and the original potential. This procedure enables us to perform quantal (semiclassical) dynamics in one dimension. In contrast to a second-order quantized Hamilton dynamics by Prezhdo and Pereverzev which conserves the total energy only with an odd-order Taylor expansion of the potential [J. Chem. Phys. 116, 4450 (2002); 117, 2995 (2002)], the present quantal cumulant dynamics method exactly conserves the energy, even if a second-order approximation of the cumulants is adopted, because the present scheme does not truncate the given potential. The authors propose three schemes, (i) a truncation, (ii) a summation of derivatives, and (iii) a convolution method, for evaluating the quantal potentials for several types of potentials. The numerical results show that although the truncation method preserves the energy to some degree, the trajectory obtained gradually deviates from that of the summation scheme after 2000 steps. Starting point is the energy expectation value as a functional of the one-particle density matrix γ and the two-particle density cumulant λ2. We decompose γ into a best idempotent approximation κ and a correction τ, that is entirely expressible in terms of λ2. So we get the energy E as a functional of κ and λ2, which can be varied independently. Approximate n-representability conditions, derived by perturbation theory are imposed on the variation of λ2. A nonlinear system of equations satisfied by λ2 is derived, the linearized version of which turns out to be equivalent to the coupled electron-pair approximation, variant zero. The start for κ is Hartree-Fock, but κ is then updated to become the best idempotent approximation of γ. We consider the sampling problems encountered in computing free-energy differences using Jarzynski’s nonequilibrium work relation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 2690 (1997)]. This relation expresses the free-energy change of a system, on which finite-time work is done, as an average over all possible trajectories of the system. This average can then be expressed as a cumulant expansion of the work. We study the scaling of these cumulants with an appropriately defined measure of phase-space accessibility [variant_greek_epsilon] and particle number N for two simple changes in state. We find that the cumulant expansion is slowly convergent for predominantly entropic processes, those where [variant_greek_epsilon] is considerably altered during the course of the process. An accurate determination of the free-energy change requires some knowledge of the behavior of the tails of the work distribution associated with the process. Jarzynski’s irreversible work relation is only valid with the correct ordering of the infinite limits of N and [variant_greek_epsilon], clarifying the regime of its applicability. We investigate by Monte Carlo simulation the size dependence of the variation of the polarization and the dielectric constant with temperature for dipolar hard spheres at the two densities ρσ3=0.80 and 0.88. From the crossing of the fourth-order cumulant for different system sizes first more precise estimates of the ferroelectric transition temperatures are obtained. We report development of the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) method that can use active space scalable to much larger size references than has previously been possible. The recent development of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method in multireference quantum chemistry offers the ability to describe static correlation in a large active space. The present MRCI method provides a critical correction to the DMRG reference by including high-level dynamic correlation through the CI treatment. When the DMRG and MRCI theories are combined (DMRG-MRCI), the full internal contraction of the reference in the MRCI ansatz, including contraction of semi-internal states, plays a central role. However, it is thought to involve formidable complexity because of the presence of the five-particle rank reduced-density matrix (RDM) in the Hamiltonian matrix elements. To address this complexity, we express the Hamiltonian matrix using commutators, which allows the five-particle rank RDM to be canceled out without any approximation. Then we introduce an approximation to the four-particle rank RDM by using a cumulant reconstruction from lower-particle rank RDMs. A computer-aided approach is employed to derive the exceedingly complex equations of the MRCI in tensor-contracted form and to implement them into an efficient parallel computer code. This approach extends to the size-consistency-corrected variants of MRCI, such as the MRCI+Q, MR-ACPF, and MR-AQCC methods. We demonstrate the capability of the DMRG-MRCI method in several benchmark applications, including the evaluation of single-triplet gap of free-base porphyrin using 24 active orbitals. Density cumulant functional theory (DCFT) is a theory that, in principle, can compute energies and properties exactly without a wavefunction. To accomplish this, the energy is expressed as an exact, known functional of the one-particle density matrix and two-particle density cumulant. The correlation contribution to the one-particle density matrix is obtained from the cumulant, to eliminate redundancy in the equations. The previous formulation of DCFT introduced this relationship in an approximate way, to obtain tractable equations. In this research, it is demonstrated that the correlation contribution to the one-particle density matrix can be extracted exactly from the cumulant, with minimal computational overhead and no increase in the asymptotic cost of the theory. We present numerical results, showing the improvements resulting from this reformulation (DC-12), and offer a perturbative analysis of the new equations to compare them to their predecessors.
