Background and purpose: Aphthous and oral ulcers are the most common ulcerative conditions of the oral mucosa, presenting as painful sores on the oral or tongue mucous membranes that make eating and drinking difficult. Zataria multiflora Boiss. has demonstrated therapeutic potential and has been used in formulations such as Protact® mouthwash. Recent studies indicate that this plant possesses several therapeutic effects, including alleviating inflammation and promoting healing in oral, digestive, and skin wounds. Given the documented effectiveness of this plant in treating various types of oral wounds and inflammation, along with the availability of Protact® mouthwash in pharmacies nationwide, this study aims to evaluate patient and physician satisfaction with the efficacy of Protact® mouthwash for treating oral ulcers and aphthous ulcers in Sari and Babol, the two largest cities by population in Mazandaran province. Materials and methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included a sample of 75 individuals, consisting of 35 physicians and 40 patients from Sari and Babol who either prescribed or used Protact® mouthwash. A convenience sampling method was used, with participants selected based on their willingness to complete a checklist. Data were collected by trained interviewers visiting medical centers, physician clinics, and pharmacies, and inviting participants to complete the checklist. Data were presented as mean ± standard deviation (M ± SD), percentages, median, minimum, and maximum values. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-squared, Kolmogorov–Smirnov, and independent t-tests. Results: The majority of participants in both groups were men (patients: 52.5%, or 21 out of 40; physicians: 94.3%, or 33 out of 35). The mean, median, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum ages for physicians were 53.94, 56, 7.6, 40, and 68 years, respectively, while those for patients were 40.13, 42, 10.8, 18, and 63 years, respectively. Most patients in this study (75%) reported a high level of satisfaction after using Protact® mouthwash. This mouthwash was mainly used for the treatment of aphthous stomatitis and oral inflammation, with a frequency of 52.5%. Results from the physicians' checklists showed that Protact® mouthwash was most frequently prescribed by dentists (42.9%), followed by general practitioners, hematologists and oncologists, and radiologists (each with a frequency of 11.4%). Additionally, physicians expressed satisfaction with the healing progress in their patients. Conclusion: The findings support the effectiveness of Protact® mouthwash, a natural product produced in Iran, for the prevention and treatment of oral cavity-related conditions. The efficacy of this product is likely attributed to the presence of major phytochemicals in Zataria multiflora extract and essential oil, including thymol and carvacrol, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and tissueregenerative properties beneficial to mucosal and skin healing. Objective: The present study aimed to assess the impact of the aqueous-ethanolic extract of Zataria multiflora (ZM), carvacrol (Car), and their co-administration with a PPAR activator, pioglitazone (Pio), on oxidative stress and inflammation induced by paraquat (PQ) inhalation at a systemic level. Materials and Methods: The rats in the control group were exposed to saline and those of other groups to PQ (54 mg/m³) aerosols for 8 times on alternate days. Nine PQ groups were treated with saline, Car (20 and 80 mg/kg/day), ZM (200 and 800 mg/kg/day), Pio (5 mg/kg/day), dexamethasone (Dexa, 0.03 mg/kg/day), and low-dose ZM or Car + Pio for 16 days during the period of PQ exposure (n=6). Results: Differential and total WBC counts, and malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin (IL)-10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α levels were enhanced but catalase (CAT), thiol, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were reduced in the blood in the PQ group (p<0.01 to p<0.001). All measured variables improved in groups treated with both doses of ZM, Car, Pio, ZM + Pio, Car+Pio, and Dexa vs the PQ group (p<0.05 to p<0.001). Most variables were more improved in combined treatment groups in comparison with three agents alone. The combination of ZM or Car, and Pio showed an impact on PQ inhalation-induced systemic changes. The current study aims to co‐encapsulate Shirazi thyme (Zataria multiflora) essential oil (ZEO) and nisin into chitosan nanogel as an antimicrobial and antioxidant agent to enhance the shelf‐life of cheese. Chitosan‐caffeic acid (CS‐CA) nanogel was produced to co‐encapsulate Zataria multiflora essential oil and nisin. This nanogel was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis, X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The effect of free (TFZN) and encapsulated ZEO‐nisin in chitosan nanogel (TCZN) on the chemical and microbiological properties of Iranian white cheese was assessed. The particle size, polydispersity index value (PDI), zeta potential, antioxidant activity, and encapsulation efficiency of the optimal chitosan‐ZEO‐nisin nanogel were 421.6 nm, 0.343, 34.0 mV, 71.06%–82.69%, and 41.3 ± 0.5%, 0.79 ± 0.06 mg/mL. respectively. FTIR and XRD approved ZEO and nisin entrapment within chitosan nanogel. The chitosan nanogel showed a highly porous surface with an irregular shape. The bioactive compounds of ZEO and nisin decreased the pH changes in cheese. On the 60th day of storage, the acidity of treated samples was significantly lower than that of control. Although the lowest anisidine index value was observed in samples treated with sodium nitrate (NaNO3) (TS), there was no significant difference between this sample and TCZN. The lowest microbial population was observed in TCZN and TS. After 60 days of ripening, Coliforms were not detected in the culture medium of TCZN and TS. Global threat resulting in heavy metal contamination of medicinal plants is considered a serious concern. The quantitative evaluation of four heavy metals, lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu), was investigated frequently sold medicinal plants in the markets of Iran. Two medicinal plants, Mentha piperita L., and Zataria multiflora Boiss. were selected from six different herbalists of six districts of Shiraz, Iran. The dissolution of the sample was performed by a conventional wet acid digestion method, and heavy metal levels were determined using Polarograph. Statistical Analysis was used by SPSS.21. According to the achieved results in M.piperita the levels of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu were in the range of 2.66 ± 0.76 mg/kg, 0.017 ± 0.009 mg/kg, 0.092 ± 0.069 mg/kg, and 0.237 ± 0.080 mg/kg, respectively. The concentrations of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu in Z. multiflora samples were 1.46 ± 0.74 mg/kg, 0.019 ± 0.004 mg/kg, 0.11 ± 0.05 mg/kg, and 0.41 ± 0.17 mg/kg, respectively. There was a correlation between Zn with Cu in our finding (r = 0.9). Based on these results, we found that the concentration of heavy metals in these two medicinal plants was not more than the standard concentration reported for similar plants. It appears that these plants are generally safe in usual doses. The finding of this study can be used to determine standard heavy metals limits in M.piperita and Z.multiflora in future studies. Objective: Liver is an important player in regulation of body homeostasis. Study investigated the effects of hydro-alcohol extract of Zataria multiflora (ZM) on oxidative damage, level of IL-6 and enzymes of liver in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated rats. Materials and Methods: The rats were distributed into 5 groups: 1) Control; 2) LPS; and 3-5) ZM-Extract (Ext) 50, ZM-Ext 100, and ZM-Ext 200. ZM-Ext groups received 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of extract 30 min before LPS. Drugs were injected intraperitoneally. The entire period of this project was 17 days. In first three days, only extract was injected and then, ZM was injected along with LPS. Results: LPS increased the level of ALT (Alanine aminotransferase), AST (Aspartate aminotransferase ), ALK-P (Alkaline Phosphatase), IL-6, malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO) metabolites and lowered thiol, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) concentration. ZM extract not only reduced ALT, AST, ALK-P, IL-6, MDA, and NO metabolites concentrations but also increased thiol content, and SOD and CAT levels. Postharvest fruit rot is a major problem in strawberry production chain worldwide. Aspergillus sp. is one of the major fungi associated with fruit rot of strawberry. In this study, an Aspergillus flavus was isolated from a rotten strawberry fruit. Based on the nucleotide sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer regions of rDNA, the fungus was confirmed as A. flavus. Pathogenicity of the isolated fungus was confirmed by artificially inoculating strawberry fruits under laboratory conditions. This strain was capable of producing aflatoxin B1 in vitro as determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Postharvest dip treatment of mature strawberry fruits with Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZEO) (0.1%) completely suppressed A. flavus infection and prevented rotting of fruits. The results of this study suggest that ZEO can be used as a sustainable and safe alternative to chemical fungicides for the control of Aspergillus fruit rot of strawberry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objective: Exercise training and Zataria multiflora have a positive effect on health and can modulate cardiovascular risk factors. Adipose tissue-derived factors such as ANGPTL8 and adhesive molecules play an important role in exerting the pathological effects of obesity. This study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of resistanceendurance exercise training combined with Zataria multiflora ingestion on the levels of ANGPTL8, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 in sedentary overweight and obese men. Methods: In this clinical trial study, 40 sedentary overweight and obese men (with an average body mass index of 28.41±1.75 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to four groups with 10 subjects each. The groups included placebo, Zataria multiflora, training, and training + Zataria multiflora. The exercise training was combined training consisting of resistanceendurance exercise, conducted three times per week over eight weeks. Zataria multiflora supplement consumption was set at 500 mg daily. Blood sampling was conducted before and after the eight-week intervention, and the levels of ANGPTL8, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 were measured using the ELISA method. Results: A significant decrease in serum levels of ANGPTL8 was observed in the training and training + Zataria multiflora groups compared to the placebo and Zataria multiflora groups (P<0.05). A decrease in serum ICAM-1 levels was significant in the training + Zataria multiflora group compared to the placebo group (P<0.05). Statistically significant decreases in serum VCAM-1 levels were observed in the training and training + Zataria multiflora groups compared to the placebo and training + Zataria multiflora groups (P<0.05). Purpose: The wound healing process involves a complex series of biological events. Skin grafts have several uses as a reconstructive method. There are several dressings for the skin graft donor site, but the optimum dressing agents that provide all the requirements at the same time are unclear. This prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of Zataria multiflora cream in the wound healing process of partial-thickness skin graft donor sites and compared it with a placebo. Materials and Methods: This clinical trial study was performed on patients who underwent split-thickness skin grafts. Enrolled patients applied Z. multiflora cream and placebo controlled (petrolatum ointment) twice a day, from the day of intervention at the skin graft donor sites in two parts, separately. On 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after surgery, the wound healing process was evaluated, photographed, and scored according to the Bates-Jensen assessment tool. Evidence of infection was evaluated. The main agent and placebo were compared during the wound healing process. Results: Decreases in wound surface area and total score were significantly greater in the Z. multiflora group (p < 0.05). The wounds of 30% of patients in the second week and 90% of patients in the third week were completely epithelialized in the Z. multiflora group. These values were 3.3% and 36.7% for the control group, respectively, and so, the healing rate was ∼9-fold in the second week and 2.45-fold in the third week in the Z. multiflora group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Wound healing and reepithelialization accelerated significantly in the first, second, third, and fourth week after intervention in the Z. multiflora treatment group, due to modulating the inflammatory phase and improving the proliferative phase. Introduction and Aim: Dental caries is the most common and chronic disease of the oral cavity worldwide. Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli are the most important etiological agent of dental caries. The aim of the present study was to compare the antimicrobial effect of Zataria multiflora essence with chlorhexidine (CHX) on the growth of streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus). Material and Method: In this in vitro study, the standard strains of S. mutans (PTCC = 1683) and L. acidophilus (PTCC: 1643) were obtained as lyophilized ampoules. Zataria multiflora essence was extracted using the Clevenger apparatus. Serial dilutions of 0.2% CHX and Zataria multiflora essence were prepared. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of CHX and essence of Zataria multiflora were determined using the modified Epsilometer test. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test and SPSS version 18. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The MIC levels of 0.2%CHX and Zataria multiflora for S. mutans and L. acidophilus were (0.00125,0.01) and (0.005,0.04) mg/ml, respectively. The antibacterial activity of CHX (0.2%) was more than Zataria multiflora essence. The antibacterial activity of 0.2% CHX and Zataria multiflora against S. mutans was more than L. acidophilus. Zataria multiflora is an important medicinal plant with antioxidant and anticancer properties attributed to its phytochemicals. To develop a method for bulk production of valuable phytochemicals, cell suspension culture of Z. multiflora were grown in liquid B5 medium and then treated in their log growth phase with chitosan (0, 10, 20, and 40 mg L−1) and yeast extract (0, 400, 800, and 1200 mg L−1) for 3 days. The levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and the main terpenoids and phenylpropanoids in the cell extracts were determined by HPLC and spectrophotometric techniques. The H2O2 and MDA levels significantly increased in the cells treated with both yeast extract and chitosan, while the NO level increased in those exposed to yeast extract. At their highest concentrations, both elicitors significantly increased PAL and TAL activities, as well as phenolic acids and flavonoids contents. Chitosan only induced the production of caffeic acid (22 µg g−1 DW), benzoic acid (2 µg g−1 DW), 4-hydroxy benzoic acid (6 µg g−1 DW), epicatechin (63 µg g−1 DW), and apigenin (5 µg g−1 DW) in the cells, while yeast extract increased the contents of phenylpropanoids gallic acid (50 µg g−1 DW), vanillin (35 µg g−1 DW), salicylic acid (24 µg g−1 DW), catechin (130 µg g−1 DW) and terpenoids carvacrol (7 µg g−1 DW) and thymol (24 µg g−1 DW). Wet bubble disease (WBD) caused by Hypomyces perniciosus is a major constraint of button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) cultivated worldwide. A few synthetic chemical fungicides are used to control WBD. In our study, the potential of essential oil (EO) from Zataria multiflora in inhibition of H. perniciosus was evaluated as an alternative to chemical fungicides. An isolate of H. perniciosus was isolated from wet bubble diseased A. bisporus and pathogenicity of the mycoparasite was determined under artificially inoculated conditions. The mycoparasitic fungus was identified using sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA. The EO was extracted from the aerial parts of Z. multiflora by microwave extraction method and evaluated in vitro for its antifungal activity against H. perniciosus. The EO of Z. multiflora (ZEO) at the tested concentrations (50% and 100%) inhibited the growth of H. perniciosus in the agar diffusion test. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ZEO was 0.04% as assessed by the poisoned food technique. The chemical composition of ZEO was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. A total of 23 compounds were identified. Among them, the most abundant compounds were Linalool (20.3%) and Bornyl acetate (15.5%). Linalool at the tested concentrations of 0.25% and 0.125% completely inhibited the mycelial growth of H. perniciosus in an in vitro assay. Kebab Koobideh ranks among the most popular in Iran, Turkey, and other countries. This product is prepared by mixing minced meat, onion, and various spices. The objective of our study was to examine the influence of Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO), fat, and saffron infusion as independent variables on the formation of four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH4) and sensory attributes of Kebab Koobideh. The findings indicated that all independent variables exerted a significant impact on the formation of ∑PAH4. Zataria multiflora essential oil was observed to exert an inhibitory effect on the production of ∑PAH4. The saffron infusion demonstrated a reduction in impact at lower concentrations, while increased effectiveness was observed at higher concentrations. Additionally, a sample meeting the desired specifications, containing 18.5 % fat, 0.008 % saffron infusion, and 0.02 % ZMEO, was prepared with consideration of two dependent responses. The desirability of this sample was quantified at 0.72. The sample contained 2.20 ng g−1 of ∑PAH4 and was rated as acceptable by sensory analysis, with a score of 84.60 out of 100. All samples exhibited a margin of exposure (MOE) exceeding 100,000, indicating that there is minimal cause for concern. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for the samples with 10 % fat, 0.05 % saffron infusion, and 0.02 % ZMEO, as well as for the sample with 10 % fat, 0 % saffron infusion, and 0.01 % ZMEO, was found to be negligible. The assessment of overall quality is contingent upon the evaluation of fat content. The current study aimed to assess the chemical, microbial, and sensory properties of Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs) in chicken fillets stored at 4 ± 1 °C for 12 days. As a result, the optimized ZEO-SLNS sample exhibited a spherical morphology with a droplet size of 251.51 ± 1.11 nm and a PDI of 0.34 ± 0.01 under transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The encapsulation efficiency (EE) and zeta potential were approximately 55.4 % and −20.87 ± 1.39 mV, respectively. Furthermore, encapsulating ZEO in SLNS enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant activity compared to pure ZEO. As a result, the application of alginate-loaded ZEO-SLNS extended the storage time of fresh chicken fillets. Thus, the application of this edible coating showcased a remarkable ability to substantially decelerate both microbial and chemical changes in chicken fillets during cold storage conditions. Dental caries and oral infections have become a widespread issue in the modern world. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial, antifungal, and cytotoxicity characteristics of the extracts of Echinacea purpura, Arctium lappa, and the essential oil of Zataria multiflora as a potential herbal mouthwash. The essential oil of Z. multiflora leaves and the extracts of E. purpurea and A. lappa roots were prepared. The characterization was carried out by GC-MS and also, total phenol and flavonoid were assed for all three samples. The antimicrobial and anti-biofilm effects were evaluated against Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus salivarius, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The cytotoxic effect of the samples was evaluated on HEK 293 and HDFa cells by MTT test. Thymol and carvacrol contents in EO of Z. multiflora were measured at 31% and 42.2%, respectively. A. lappa had the lowest total phenolic and flavonoid value among the samples. On the other hand, the total phenolic content of Z. multiflora and the total flavonoid content of E. purpurea were the highest. The MIC values of Zataria, Arctium, and Echinacea against S. mutans were 0.011% v/v, 187.5 mg/ml, and 93.75 mg/ml, while MBC were 0.011% v/v, 375 mg/ml, and 187.5 mg/ml, respectively. The formulation showed bactericidal activity against S. mutans in the concentration of 5.86 mg/ml for Echinacea and Burdock extracts and 0.08 µl/ml for EO of Zataria. The formulation significantly affected microbial biofilm formation and induced biofilm degradation. The cell viability percentages were higher than 50% during 24 and 48 h. The formulation had a significant antimicrobial effect on cariogenic bacteria and C. albicans, with the lowest cytotoxic effects. This study aimed to compare the antimicrobial effect of Deconex Surface, a common disinfectant, and Zataria multiflora essence on microbial load of Emergency ambulance equipment in Iran. The samples were selected from all the ambulances through convenience sampling. Before the intervention, the cultures were obtained from the contact surfaces and the surfaces were then disinfected with Deconex and Zataria multiflora. Then, repeated cultures were obtained from the same surfaces. Next, the samples were immediately sent to a microbiology lab. The obtained data were entered into SPSS 2016 and analyzed using statistical tests. Results showed that disinfecting effect of Zataria multiflora is better than Deconex in eliminating certain bacterial species such as Staphylococcus and Bacillus. So Zataria multiflora essence can be used as a surface and hospital equipment disinfectant along with other disinfectant compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Allergic rhinitis is a widespread disorder across the globe. The Shirazi thyme (Zataria multiflora) has been shown to have considerable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study assessed the effect of this herbal product on alterations in inflammatory/anti-inflammatory cytokines. Method: This study was conducted on the bank sample before and after the intervention to measure interleukin-4, interleukin-5, and interferon -γ levels with the ELISA test method in a supernatant taken from the PBMC cell culture from 30 allergic rhinitis patients. Results: The IL-4 level had no significant difference between the two groups before the treatment. However, it had a significant increase in the case group after the treatment. The IL-5 level was significantly higher in the case group before the treatment. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences between the case and control groups after the treatment. Similarly, no significant differences were observed between the two groups considering IFN-γ before and after the treatment. Conclusion: Consuming thyme with an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 and a decrease in IL-5 cytokine control inflammation and improvement in allergic rhinitis symptoms. The main shortcoming of polylactic acid (PLA) for packaging applications is its brittleness. Thus, there is a pronounced interest in the potential use of PLA/zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnO NP) systems as active food packaging. In this study, ZnO NPs and two types of essential oils (EOs) including Zataria multiflora L. (ZEO) and Mentha piperita L. (MEO) at different concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 1.5% w/w) were used for the production of active PLA-based bionanocomposites for packaging applications. The presence of ZnO NPs and EOs led to increased film thickness and improved contact angle properties. ZnO NPs boosted the PLA-based films' WVP, whereas the EOs had the opposite effect. The increase in the ZEO and MEO content reduced the ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus and increased the elongation at break. The X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results confirmed that the improvements are related to the ZnO NPs exfoliation and good interaction between PLA and ZnO NPs in the presence of EOs. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that the incorporation of ZnO NPs increased the glass transition temperature (Tg), but did not change the melting temperature (Tm), though the addition of the EOs lowered the values of both parameters. Morphology analysis by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy showed that the presence of ZEO/MEO led to increased pinholes, pores, and roughness in the microstructure of the films. Background: Novel and more efficient compounds are urgently required for medical treatment of cystic echinococcosis (CE). Germinative cell culture of Echinococcus granulosus could be used for anti-echinococcosis agent tests and other biological studies on CE. This study was performed to establish an in vitro cell culture model for E. granulosus germinative cells and to evaluate the lethal effect of Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO) on the cultured cells. Methods: The inner surface of germinal layers of CE cysts was scraped, and the obtained materials were trypsinized to obtain a suspension of single germinative cells. Medium 199 was used as the basic culture medium and was supplemented with fetal bovine serum, 2-mercaptoethanol, l-cysteine, l-glutamine, glucose, sodium pyruvate, hydatid fluid, amphotericin B and antibiotics. The cells were cultured at a concentration of 104 cells/ml of culture medium and incubated at 37 °C. The culture medium was replaced every 7 days. Chemical composition of ZMEO was identified by GC-MS analysis. ZMEO was tested at concentrations of 0.5–8 mg/ml. Viability of the cells was assessed by trypan blue exclusion assay. Results: A significant increase in the cell number was evident at 20, 30 and 45 days after cultivation. At 45 days of cultivation, the number of cells was approximately five-fold higher than on the first day. In GC-MC analysis, carvacrol, p-cymene, g-terpinene and thymol were found to be the main compounds of ZMEO. The lethal effect of ZMEO on the germinative cells at concentrations of 6, 7 and 8 mg/ml was 100% after 60, 25 and 7 min of exposure, respectively. Conclusions: At 45 days of cultivation, the cell concentration was suitable for the desired in vitro experiments. A high lethal effect of ZMEO on the germinative cells of E. granulosus may be considered an opportunity for the introduction of a novel, more effective and safer therapeutic agent for treatment of CE using an herbal product. In order to evaluate the effect of moderate dose gamma irradiation (10 KGr) on antioxidant and antibacterial properties of Zataria multiflora Boiss, edible active coating containing normal and irradiated extract (1.5%) on base of Na-caseinate solution (8%) was prepared and shelf life of coated rainbow trout fillet was evaluted. An experiment was carry out with 4 treatments without coating (control), fillets coated with Na-caseinate (T1), and fillets coated with Nacaseinate enriched with normal (T2) or irradiated (T3) Zataria multiflora Boiss extract and 4 replicates during 10 days at refrigerated (4±1oC) storage. Chemical (TVN, TBA, PV) and microbial (TVC and PTC) tests were measured on days 0, 3, 6 and 10. The results showed irradiation of Zataria multiflora Boiss with a moderate dose of gamma rays, despite the possitive effects, did not cause significant changes in its antioxidant and antibacterial properties. But at the end of the storage period, the lowest levels of TBA (3.23±0.23 mg MDA/Kg), TVN (25.23±1.12 mg/100g) and psychrophilic bacteria counts (5.00±0.13 log cfu/g) was found in fillets containing active coating of Na-caseinate and irradiated Zataria multiflora Boiss extract (p <0.05). Therefore, Zataria multiflora Boiss extract can be used as normal or irradiated in the active coating of Na-caseinate, to increase the shelf life and quality of rainbow trout fillets at refrigerator temperature for at least 10 days. The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch is one of the polyphagous pests that attack a wide range of crops. In recent decades, excessive application of synthetic acaricides has led to its resistance to pesticides and environmental pollution. However, considering the importance of the role of pesticides in controlling plant pests, it is impossible to cease using these compounds. In recent decades, new methods such as the use of plant extracts have been proposed that not only control pests but also have no residues and harmful environmental effects. Also, the use of plant extracts in combination with synthetic pesticides while controlling the pest, reduces the amount of pesticide usage. In this study, the efficacy of methanolic extracts of Zataria multiflora and Rosmarinus officinalis was investigated individually and in combination with spirodiclofen and propargite to control two-spotted spider mites. Bioassay tests were performed using the leaf dipping method. Each treatment was performed in three independent biological replications and the mortality was recorded 24 h after exposure. The 50% lethal dose (LC50) of spirodiclofen and propargite as well as methanolic extracts of Z. multiflora and R. officinalis were estimated to 1.89, 12.76, 1934.13, and 4382.07 mg/l, respectively. In addition, results of experiments related to mixing plant extracts with acaricides showed that the combination of Z. multiflora extract with spirodiclofen and propargite caused a synergistic effect with a co-toxicity coefficient of 66.66 and 55.55, respectively. Oxidative stress has a major role in the nephrosis. In the present study, the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Zataria multiflora (ZM) and carvacrol (CAR) were evaluated on the renal damage induced by adriamycin (ADR). The animals accidentally divided into four groups including: Control, ADR, ZM + ADR and CAR + ADR. The renal tissue, urine, and blood samples subjected to biochemical markers and histopathological evaluation. ADR significantly decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) while escalated urine protein excretion as well as protein clearance (p <.01 to p <.001). Also, ADR significantly reduced the antioxidants and boosted the malondialdehyde (MDA) compared to the control (p <.05 to p <.01). In groups treated by ZM and CAR, GFR, and antioxidants significantly increased, whereas urine protein excretion and MDA decreased (p <.05 to p <.001). Objectives: The effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Zataria multiflora (Z. multiflora) on memory changes, as well as lung injury due to inhaled paraqut (PQ) in rat, were examined. Method: Control group of rat with saline aerosol administration, PQ groups with PQ aerosol (27 and 54 mg/m3) administration, PQ groups treated with two doses of the extract (200 and 800 mg/kg/day) and dexamethasone (0.03 mg/kg/day) were studied. Shuttle box and Morris Water Maze (MWM) tests were carried out as well as oxidant, anti-oxidant markers, total and differential white blood cell (WBC) counts and cytokine levels in broncho-alveolar lavage (BALF). Results: Inhaled PQ significantly increased the escape latency and travelled distance in MWM test, but the time spent in the target quadrant on the probe day was significantly reduced (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). The latency to enter the dark room at 3, 24, and 48 h after an electrical shock was reduced due to PQ (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). Exposure to PQ significantly increased total WBC, neutrophil, eosinophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte counts, IL-10, interferon gama (INF-γ), nitrite (NO2), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, but catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and thiol levels were decreased (p < 0.05 to p < 0.00). Z. multiflora and dexamethasone treatment significantly improved all behavioral as well as lung changes induced by inhaled PQ (p < 0.05 to p < 0.01). Zataria multiflora is employed as an antitussive, anti-spasmodic, analgesic and etc. Agent in traditional medicine. The modern medical studies are also confirmed effects of this plant for treatment of respiratory problems via anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and immunomodulatory properties. We evaluated efficacy of Z. multiflora on tests of pulmonary function, respiratory symptoms, inhaled bronchodilator drugs use, and hematological factors in COPD patients. Patients (n = 45) were randomly grouped in the following three groups: placebo group (P), groups received Z. multiflora extract 3 and 6 mg/kg/day (Z3 and Z6). FEV 1 and MEF 25 - 75 , respiratory symptoms, inhaled bronchodilator drugs use and hematological factors were evaluated before and 1–2 months after treatment. Z. multiflora led to significant enhancement of FEV 1 (p < 0.05 to p < 0.01). Respiratory symptoms were also considerably ameliorated following treatment with extracts for 1 and 2 months compared to baseline values (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). In groups received extract, inhaled bronchodilator drugs use was remarkably declined at the end of study (both, p < 0.05). Reduction of total WBC was observed 1–2 months after treatment in treated groups with extract compared to baseline values (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). Neutrophils were remarkably declined in Z3 and Z6 groups after 2-monthes compared to 1-month treatment (p < 0.05 to p < 0.01). Human listeriosis is predominantly associated with contaminated food consumption, including seafood, shrimp, and RTE foods. Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that is mainly found in freshwater, seawater, and fish mucus. Seafood contamination can occur during food processing. L.monocytogenes levels of below 100 cfu/g can be found in seafood samples. The present study was conducted to investigates the effect of Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZEO) and potassium sorbate (PS) on microbial and chemical changes in raw rainbow trout at 4°C to extent shelf life and improve food safety. First, the chemical compositions of ZEO were identified. Then, different percentage of ZEO (1.5, 0.8, and 0.5%) and PS (2%) were inoculated in raw fish fillets and analyzed for TVC, TBA, TVB‐N, pH, sensory attributes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and inoculated L. monocytogenes (1 × 105 cfu/g) survival at 4°C for 12 days. The best sensory evaluation score was observed for the samples treated with 0.8% and 1.5% ZEO. Overall, this study results indicated that the treatment of rainbow trout fillet with 1.5% ZEO is the best method for controlling the growth of L. monocytogenes at refrigerator temperature without any undesirable sensory effects. Introduction: Atopic diseases are global concerns in the today's industrialized world. Allergic rhinitis is the most common allergic condition affection 20% of individuals. This disorder is associated with markable morbidity and rising healthcare expenditure. Aim: Considering the anti-inflammatory properties of a plant Zataria multiflora (ZM) with the common name of Shirazi thyme, a randomized clinical trial was designed to evaluate the alleviation of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Material and methods: A total of 30 allergic rhinitis patients were randomly and equally assigned to experimental and control groups. Afterwards, the case group was treated with an extract of ZM and the control group with placebo for 2 months. Finally, the clinical signs and symptoms before and after the treatment according to the SNOT22 questionnaire were analysed. Results: Comparing the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and an average score of SNOT22 questionnaire between the two groups before the intervention provided some difference, which was significantly greater after the treatment. Based on this questionnaire, our patients in the ZM syrup group had lower grades than before the treatment and experienced ameiloration.Conclusions: Regarding the significant effect of the ZM syrup in reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis, its use is highly recommended. Since allergic rhinitis is a multifactorial condition, the use of herbal antioxidants along with conventional treatment would result in a more effective improvement of the disease. Malathion (MT) is one of the most widely used organophosphorus insecticides which induces toxicity through oxidative stress induction, free radical production and acetylcholinesterase inhibition. In this work, HepG2 cells were used to determine the effect of Zataria multiflora methanolic extract (MEZM) and rosmarinic acid (RA) on MT-induced cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were determined and plant was further standardized based on RA content using HPLC method. The cultured HepG2 cells were pretreated with MEZM (1 μg/ml) and RA (0.1 μg/ml) for 4 h and exposed to MT (100 μM). Cell viability, oxidative stress biomarkers, ROS production, and cell death were examined after 24 h. The amount of RA was determined 73.48 mg/g dried extract. IC50 values of MEZM and MT were 368.56 μg/ml and 99.43 μM, respectively. Pretreatment with MEZM and RA decreased the cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and cell percentage in the late apoptosis and necrosis stages induced by MT. There was no significant difference between MEZM and RA effects. The present study showed the significant protective effects of MEZM against toxicity induced by MT in hepatocytes which can be attributed to the plant antioxidant constituents including RA. The use of natural substances could reduce consumption of synthetic agents in food industry for inhibition the growth of pathogens. Plants attract the main concentration on this topic, on the other hand Iran with special conditions has a good potential for growing the plants that have medical application. Zataria multiflora is growing in different part of Iran has antibacterial and antioxidant activity that could be used in food. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Zataria multiflora on Aeromonas hydrophila and the use of essence as a coat to improve the shelf life of perca filet. Fresh Zataria multiflora harvested essence was prepared by using the Clevenger apparatus. Then antibacterial property of Zataria multiflora was determined by mirobroth dilution method for measuring the minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) at laboratory scale. Finally, chemical composition of essence was assayed by Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-mass), also five different levels of essence (0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1 percentage) were used as a food coat in perca filet. Results showed that MIC and MBC were 250 and 125 μg/ml against Aeromonas hydrophila, respectively. Also results showed that the efficacy of essence extraction was 1.84 percent, and the higher compound in Zataria multiflora essence was thymol (40.5 %) and the lower substance was alfa-humolen (0.03 %). Also, results documented that the use of two level of essence (0.1 and 0.5 percent) of essence in perca filet could statistically increase the shelf life than the control, as well as improve the organoleptic properties. Background: Hydatidosis is a common disease of both humans and animals, resulting from infection with the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm. The aim of this study was to investigate the antiparasitic (protoscolicidal) activities of three essential oils in vitro. Methods: This study was designed to evaluate the biochemical composition and in vitro antiparasitic effects of Zataria multiflora, Origanum vulgare and Mentha pulegium essential oils. Gas chromatography was performed to identify the main components of the herbal oils. To determine the antiparasitic properties of the essential oils, live protoscoleces from hydatid cysts were exposed to three concentrations of the herbal oils and were incubated at 37°C for 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 minutes. Results: The biochemical analysis of these oils indicated that carvacrol and thymol were the major compounds of the Zataria oil. Further, carvacrol and thymol in Origanum essential oil and pulegone and piperitone in Mentha oil were the major compounds. The quickest and slowest antiparasitic effect was achieved from Zataria and Origanum (10%) or from Zataria (0.6%), respectively. The statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the mortality rate of protoscoleces exposed to 0.6% and 1% concentrations, respectively, of Zataria and Origanum at the predetermined exposure times (P<0.05). The three concentrations of Mentha had the same significant statistical differences (P<0.05). Conclusion: Essential oils, Zataria multiflora, Origanum vulgare and Mentha pulegium had significant protoscolicidal activities that were dependent on the concentration of the oils and the exposure times. In this paper, a multifunctional nanofibrous cellulose acetate/gelatin/ Zataria multiflora -nanoemulsion (CA/Gel/ ZM -nano) wound dressing was fabricated, in which nanoemulsion of a natural active antibacterial plant, by the scientific name of Zataria multiflora (ZM) was loaded into the nanofibrous mat. To fabricate the wound dressing, different weight ratios of CA/Gel (100, 0, 75, 25, 50, 50 and 25, 75) were selected, and solutions with concentrations of 16, 15, 14 and 12% w/v were prepared for each ratio, respectively to achieve smooth and uniform fibers by electrospinning. In vitro and in vivo analysis was taken for the samples. Nanofibrous mats with a lower ratio of CA/Gel and incorporated with ZM -nano promoted the adhesion and proliferation of L929 fibroblast cells significantly. Also, by lowering the ratio of CA/Gel, nanoemulsion drug-loading into nanofibers increased considerably, as the amount of ZM -nano loaded into CA/Gel = 50:50 was found to be 2.4-fold higher than CA/Gel = 100:0. Moreover, the rat model experiment in our study revealed that the nanofibrous samples incorporated with nanoemulsion drug (ZM -nano) accelerated the wound healing process so that the relative wound area for the nanoemulsion-loaded dressings was much smaller than the other samples after 22 days. Objective: Paraquat (PQ) is a herbicide which induces oxidative stress and inflammation. Anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects were shown for Zataria multiflora (Z. multiflora) and carvacrol previously. The effects of Z. multiflora hydroalcoholic extract and carvacrol on systemic inflammation and oxidative stress induced by inhaled PQ were examined in this study. Materials and Methods: Six groups of male rats used in this study were as follows: control group exposed to normal saline aerosol, one group exposed to PQ 54 mg/m³ aerosol, animals exposed to PQ 54 mg/m³ and treated with Z. multiflora (200 and 800 mg/kg/day) or carvacrol (20 and 80 mg/kg/day) for 16 days after the end of exposure to PQ. Exposure to PQ was performed 8 times, every other day, each time for 30 min. After the end of the treatment period, different variables were measured. Results: Significant increases in nitrite (NO2), malondialdehyde (MDA) and interleukin (IL)-6 serum levels but significant reduction interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) serum levels as well as IFN-γ/IL-6 ratio were observed in PQ-exposed compared to control group (p<0.01 for MDA and IL-6, p<0.001 for other cases). Treatment with both doses of the extract and carvacrol specially at high dose, reduced MDA, NO2, and IL-6 but increased IFN-γ and IFN-γ/IL-6 ratio compared to un-treated PQ exposed group (p<0.05 to p<0.001). Conclusion: Treatment with Z. multiflora and carvacrol improved systemic inflammation oxidative biomarkers induced by inhaled PQ which may indicate therapeutic potential of the plant and its constituent, carvacrol in systemic inflammation and oxidative biomarkers induced by inhaled PQ. The effects of Zataria multiflora on clinical symptoms, pulmonary function tests, oxidative stress, and C‐reactive protein levels in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients were evaluated. Forty‐five patients were allocated to 3 groups: placebo group and 2 groups that received 3 and 6 mg/kg/day Z. multiflora extract (Z3 and Z6) for 2 months. Clinical symptoms, pulmonary function tests, oxidative stress, and serum C‐reactive protein levels were evaluated pretreatment (step 0) and 1 (step I) and 2 (step II) months after treatment. Clinical symptoms including breathlessness and chest wheeze in Z3‐ and Z6‐treated groups and sputum production only in the Z6‐treated group were significantly improved 1 and 2 months after treatment compared with baseline values (P <.01 to P <.001). The FEV1 was significantly increased after 2 months of treatment with Z3 and Z6 (P <.05 to P <.01). Malondialdehyde and nitrite levels were significantly decreased after a 2‐month treatment with Z6 compared with step 0 (P <.05 to P <.01). The thiol contents in the Z6 group as well as superoxide dismutase and catalase activities in both groups treated with the extract were significantly increased in step II compared with step 0 (P <.05 to P <.01). The C‐reactive protein level at the end of the study was significantly reduced compared with the step 0 in both treated groups (P <.05 for both cases). Two‐month treatment with Z. multiflora improved clinical symptoms, pulmonary function tests, oxidative stress, and C‐reactive protein in COPD patients. Objective(s): The effects of PPAR-γ agonist alone and in combination with carvacrol and Zataria multiflora on inhaled paraquat (PQ) induced-systemic inflammation and oxidative stress were examined. Materials and Methods: Control group exposed to normal saline aerosol, one group exposed to 54 mg/m3 PQ aerosol and four groups exposed to PQ aerosol and treated with 5 mg/kg/ day pioglitazone, pioglitazone + 200 mg/kg/day Z. multiflora extract, pioglitazone + 20 mg/kg/day carvacrol, and 0.03 mg /kg/day dexamethasone for 16 days after the end of exposure to PQ were studied. Exposure to normal saline or PQ was performed every other days for 30 min (8 times). Different variables were measured after the end of treatment period. Results: PQ exposure significantly increased serum levels of NO2, MDA and IL-6 but dexreased CAT and IFN-γ levels and IFN-γ/IL-6 ratio compared to control group (P<0.01 to P<0.001). Treatment with pioglitazone only improved serum level of MDA (P<0.01). Treatment with combination of pioglitazone and carvacrol as well as treatment with dexamethasone improved all measured variables compared to PQ exposed group (P<0.05 to P<0.001). The effects of pioglitazone + Z. multiflura and pioglitazone + carvacrol on almost all measured variables were significantly higher than pioglitazone alone (P<0.05 toP<0.001). Conclusion: The effects of combination therapy of pioglitazone with Z. multiflora or carvacrol on inhaled paraquat (PQ) induced-oxidative stress and systemic inflammation were higher than the effects of pioglitazone alone. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a third hospital infection agent, and it is the second essential factor in wound infections. Despite many scientific advances in the treatment of burns, burn is one of the significant public health problems worldwide, particularly in developing countries. In this study, natural ointment ZOUSH was formulated with alcoholic extracts of Satureja khuzestaniea, Zataria multiflora and Mentha Mozaffariani Jamzad with Honey, and Polyurethane. A comparison between ZOUSH ointment and antibiotic was made by the disc diffusion method. PCR techniques carried out to confirm the genes exoS, lasA, and lasB, the housekeeping genes gyrA and fabD were used as a control. The burn wound was created by Ian Allen Holder method. The treatment was performed in 20 days, and the size of the burn was measured. Silver sulfadiazine ointment was considered as a positive control. The results indicated that 10, 13, 17 and 20 µg concentration of ZOUSH ointment have 12, 14, 15, 18 mm inhibition zone. Also, ZOUSH ointment can decrease the size of the wound and has wound healing properties. Due to the effectiveness of ZOUSH ointment on the size of burn wound and its antibacterial properties on P. aeruginosa, this ointment is recommended for the treatment of burn wounds. Meat products, such as fish meat, are known to be susceptible to undesirable chemical and microbial reactions that characterize spoilage. In this study, the effect of a sodium alginate and chitosan coating incorporated with Mentha piperita, Artemisia dracunculus, and Zataria multiflora essential oils on chemical and microbial attributes of rainbow trout meat was evaluated during storage at 4°C. Chemical and microbial assays were performed on rainbow trout fillets with alginate and chitosan coatings and 0.2% concentration of test essential oils. The results showed that the alginate coating with essential oils significantly decreased production of thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) and reduced the growth of foodborne spoilage bacteria during storage at 4ºC. At day 12, the best results were obtained in chitosan coating + Z. multiflora, with 5.96 ± 0.12, 4.93 ± 0.12, and 3.83 ± 0.2 for total viable counts, psychrotrophic bacterial count, and lactic acid bacteria count, respectively. Moreover, the lowest amounts of chemical analysis were observed in chitosan coating + Z. multiflora at the final day (0.54 ± 0.03 and 20.31 ± 0.1 for TBA and TVBN, respectively). Objective: Stressors have an important role in sickness behaviors. We checked the effect of Zataria multiflora (ZM) extract against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anxiety and depression behaviors in rats. Materials and Methods: Rats were distributed in the following groups (n=10): Control, LPS (1 mg/kg), LPS-ZM50, LPS-ZM100 and LPS-ZM200. LPS was syringed intraperitoneally (ip) 2 hr before performing behavioral tests. LPS-ZM groups were treated with 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg (ip) of ZM extract 30 min before LPS administration. Open field (OF), elevated plus maze (EPM) and forced swimming (FS) tests were done. White blood cell (WBC) was counted in all groups. Results: In OF, pretreatment with ZM extract augmented the number of lines crossed and traveled distance in central and peripheral areas. The rats treated with ZM extract spent more time in the central zone and less time in the peripheral area compared to the LPS group. In EPM, the number of entries into the open and closed arms and stop time in the open arms in LPS-ZM groups were higher than the LPS group. The stop time in the closed arms of ZMLPS groups was less than the LPS group. In FS test, swimming and climbing time in groups treated with ZM extract was more than the LPS group while their immobility time was less. WBC count in the LPS-ZM100 and LPS-ZM200 was lower than that of the LPS group. Conclusion: Based on the results, pretreatment with ZM extract restituted anxiety and depression caused by LPS in rats. The study was carried out in control rats exposed to normal aerosol of saline, PQl and PQh groups exposed to aerosols of 27 and 54 mg/m3 PQ, groups exposed to high PQ concentration (PQh) and treated with 200 and 800 mg/kg/day Z. multiflora , 5 and 10 mg/kg/day pioglitazone, low doses of Z. multiflora + pioglitazone, and 0.03 mg/kg/day dexamethasone. Increased tracheal responsiveness, transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß) and lung pathological changes due to PQh were significantly improved by high doses of Z. multiflora and pioglitazone, dexamethasone and extract + pioglitazone, (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). In group treated with low doses of the extract + pioglitazone, the improvements of most measured variables were significantly higher than the low dose of two agents alone (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). This research was carried out to make zein microcapsules containing Zataria multiflora essential oil (Z. multiflora EO) by the electrospraying method to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of the microcapsules on Z. tritici and F. graminearum fungi, as well as X. translucens and R. tritici bacteria. To achieve this aim, Z. multiflora EO was encapsulated at different concentrations (0, 5,10%, and 15% v/v) in electrosprayed zein microcapsules and the characteristics of the electrosprayed zein microcapsules were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Porosity and specific surface values were measured by the BET method. Then, the amount of loaded Z. multiflora EO was determined for efficiency. The antifungal and antibacterial activities of the electrosprayed zein microcapsules were measured using the agar well diffusion method. The results of SEM showed that the morphology of the electrosprayed zein microcapsule was influenced by the concentration of Z. multiflora EO (p < 0.05). DSC results indicated the compatibility between the Z. multiflora EO and the zein polymer. The FTIR spectrum showed that adding Z. multiflora EO changed the secondary structure of the zein protein. XRD patterns showed that the electrosprayed zein microcapsules were in a semi-crystalline state. The BET results determined the average pore diameter of microcapsules. Electrosprayed zein microcapsules containing Z. multiflora EO had inhibitory effects on both fungi and bacteria (p < 0.05). Zataria multiflora Boiss. belonging to the family Lamiaceae is an important folkloric medicinal plant in Fars province, Southwestern Iran. In this study, essential oil constituents, phenolic content, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities from the aerial parts of Z. multiflora collected from different natural habitats of Fars province were investigated. The essential oil of all samples was extracted by hydro-distillation using Clevenger type apparatus and analyzed using GC and GC-MS. The main chemical constituents were, thymol (34.41 - 54.35 %), p-cymene (9.49 - 19.85 %), γ-terpinene (7.34 - 16.70 %), carvacrol (5.35 - 15.34 %) and α-pinene (1.63 - 5.25 %). The total phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of methanolic extracts were determined with the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent and by the 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay, respectively. Total phenols varied from 234.66 to 302.28 mg gallic acid equivalents/g dry weight, and IC50 values in the radical scavenging assay ranged from 348.63 to 453.76 mg/mL. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oils was individually evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans using disc diffusion and serial dilution methods. The oils obtained from different geographical habitat showed high activity against four medically important pathogens. Objective: Zataria multiflora (Zm) has been proposed for memory enhancing in Persian traditional medicine; but to now, no study has been carried out in this field yet. The aim of this research was to study the plant effect on spatial memory in scopolamine-induced amnesia and investigate in vivo anticholinesterase effect of Zm. Material and Methods: Aerial parts of the plant were extracted with methanol and standardized on the basis of rutin content. Male rats received three doses of Zm extract (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (ip) for 7 days) and 30 min after the latest dose, scopolamine (1 mg/kg) was administered to animals. Learning capacity and spatial memory were studied using morris water maze (MWM) and passive avoidance test (PAT) methods. Anticholinesterase activity was studied using Ellman's method. Physostigmine (0.3 mg/kg) and piracetam (200 mg/kg) were used as positive controls. Results: All doses of Zm extract significantly decreased the distance and time spent to find the platform in MWM and increased the time latency in PAT test. In both MWM and PAT tests, the highest effect of Zm was observed at 200 mg/kg which was in accordance with AChE inhibitory effect of the plant. Introduction: Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative and microaerophilic bacterium. About half of the human population in the world is infected with this bacterium. Helicobacter pylori is known to be one of the main causes of stomach ulcers and gastric cancer. The increased antibiotic resistance, the high cost of combined treatments and adverse side effects have led to an increase in the tendency to alternative methods such as the use of antioxidants, antiinflammatory agents, probiotics, and herbal medicines. Materials and methods: In this study the published articles on the effects of 29 plant families, including 69 Iranian plant species against H. pylori in vitro and in vivo conditions were reviewed and categorized. Results: According to the obtained results, plants such as Mentha Piperita, Zataria multiflora, Salvia mirzayanii, Geum Iranicum, Rhus coriaria, Commiphora myrrha, Heracleum persicum, Trachyspermum amm, Artemisia absinthium, Glycyrrhiza glabra L, Olea europaea and Punica granatum are the most affected plants against Helicobacter pylori in vitro condition. Conclusion: The observed antibacterial effects of the tested herbs in this study suggest that these herbs have the potential to be used as a viable alternative treatment for of the H. pylori infections but antibacterial activity evaluation of herbal extracts against H. pylori should be evaluated both in vitro and in vivo conditions. Also, determining the effective ingredient can help further research in this regard. The effectiveness of the same plant species should be evaluated in the different regions and ultimately concluded in the field of their effect. It is clear that the obtain outcome of the antibacterial effect of the same herbal extract on different strains of a bacterial species might be different so the standard strain of H. pylori must be use. Objective: Zataria multiflora (ZM) is a plant with ethnopharmacological value which was recently tested to reduce symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of ZM essential oil on spatial cognitive and noncognitive behavior, as well as hippocampal tau protein and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) concentrations in rats with AD. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five adult male Sprague Dawley rats (300±30 g) were randomly divided into 5 groups: control (intact rats); sham (received intracerebroventricular (ICV) microinjection of normal saline); AD control (rats with AD that did not receive any treatment); vehicle control (rats with AD that orally received tween-80, 5% (ZM essential oil vehicle) for 20 days) and experimental (rats with AD that orally received ZM essential oil 100 µl/kg/day for 20 days). AD was induced by bidirectional microinjection of ß amyloid 1-42 (10 µg/2µl). Tau protein and TNFα concentrations were measured by ELISA methods. Spatial cognitive and noncognitive behavior were determined by Morris water maze (MWM) test. Results: ZM essential oil significantly improved latency time, time spent in the target quarter and cognitive behavior of rats with AD compared to control and sham groups (p<0.05). Hippocampal tau protein and TNFα concentrations were significantly higher in both AD control and vehicle groups compared to control and sham groups respectively (p<0.01 and p<0.001), administration of ZM essential oil reduced these parameters as compared to AD control and vehicle groups respectively (p<0.01 and p<0.001). Conclusion: ZM essential oil improves spatial learning and memory of rats with AD as assessed by MWM test. Zataria multiflora (ZM), also known as Shirazi thyme is a popular culinary spice and medicinal plant, which is known by its thyme-like properties. Despite its wide usage in food, phenolic composition of this plant has remained uninvestigated. In this study, for the first time, several polyphenols including hydroxycinnamic acids, phenolic terpenes, and flavonoids were identified in the hydroalcoholic extract of Z. multiflora. Furthermore, HPLC–PDA fingerprints of the samples were established and antioxidant activity, total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of ZM samples were also evaluated. Potential quality markers of Zataria multiflora were then determined by chemometric evaluation of chromatographic fingerprints, which were subsequently quantified. Our results revealed that four major compounds including rosmarinic acid (6.53–42.39 mg/g E), naringenin (4.95–11.36 mg/g E), carvacrol (3.15–48.36 mg/g E), and thymol (1.63–19.14 mg/g E) are the principal compounds appertaining to antioxidant activity, TPC and TFC properties in ZM extracts, which are worth considering as potential markers of ZM quality. Background and Objectives: Plant-derived essential oils (EOs) shave many usages in health and medicine, such as antibacterial agents. The aim of this study was the improvement of antibacterial activities of two EOs using nanotechnology. Materials and Methods: Antibacterial activity was investigated on four important human pathogenic bacteria using the 96-well plate microdilution method, a quantitative approach. Eleven formulations were prepared using each of the EOs. Eventually, the best nanoformulation with the smallest particle size and polydispersive indices (PDI and SPAN) was selected using each EO for further investigations. Moreover, two microemulsions with similar ingredients and the same portion in comparison with two selected nanoemulsions were also prepared. Antibacterial activity of each EO was compared with its micro- and nano-emulsions. Results: The antibacterial efficacy of Zataria multiflora EO (ZMEO) was significantly better than Mentha piperita EO (MPEO). Besides, the antibacterial activity of nanoemulsion of ZMEO with a particle size of 129 ± 12 nm was significantly better than no- and micro-formulated forms of ZMEO. Interestingly, the efficiency of MPEO nanoemulsion (160 ± 25 nm) was also significantly better than MPEO and its micro-formulated form. Conclusion: Regardless of the intrinsic antibacterial property of two examined EOs, by formulating to nanoemulsion, their efficiencies were improved. Background and purpose: In recent decades, various efforts have been made to replace synthetic materials with natural disinfectants that have less disadvantages and lead to similar or even better results. The present study was conducted to compare the effect of Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora as natural disinfectants with those of Deconex and sodium hypochlorite as two industrial disinfectants on Candida albicans. Materials and methods: This experimental study was conducted in 128 resin acrylic dentures. After the inoculation of C. albicans on each denture, they were divided into four groups, each containing 32 dentures. Deconex, Sodium hypochlorite, Artemisia aucheri, and Zataria multiflora were administered in each group in four densities (0.1, 0.01, 0.001, and 0.0001). The data were analyzed in SPSS V19 applying t-test. Results: The four disinfectants were applied for 10 and 60 min. Deconex showed the highest disinfection effect on samples (P<0.05). There were no significant differences between the effect of Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora after 60 min and 10 min. However, it was found that the potency of Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora increased after 60 min. Conclusion: Current findings showed chemical disinfectants with higher potency in short-time intervals, compared to the natural ones. But, after a longer period of time, Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora exerted similar effects as those of the synthetic disinfectants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of edible coatings to protect food has increased dramatically in recent years. In this study, the pileus of button mushroom Agaricus bisporus was coated with 1% carboxymethyl cellulose and essential oil nanoemulsion of Zataria multiflora at three concentrations of 200, 300 and 400 mg/l and stored at 8 ° C for 2 weeks. Then weight loss, brix, texture strength and solution color were investigated. Button mushroom coated with essential oil nano-emulsion showed a significant difference in weight loss from that of control. The results showed that Increasing the concentration of nanoemulsion reduced the weight loss of the pileus. Also, the amount of moisture loss in the pileus is similar to the trend of weight loss. Therefore, the nano-emulsion coating reduced the drying process in the pileus. Tissue strength was increased with increasing concentrations of nano-emulsion oils compared to control , and the best concentration was 300 and 400 mg/l. The brix was increased until the seventh day and decreased at the end of the durability period , with the lowest concentration at 400 mg/l. Zataria multiflora Boiss. (ZM) from Lamiaceae family, is an herb native to Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan with a history of use both as a condiment and a traditional medicine. The herb and/or its preparations have also shown promising effects in modern pharmacological studies. With regard to the importance of reducing synthetic drug administration both as growth promoters and therapeutic agents in poultry industry, this review is a short account of current knowledge about the beneficial effects of this herb on broiler health and performance parameters based on published materials in different databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scientific Information Database, Scopus, etc. It seems that ZM, possibly due to the presence of thymol and carvacrol as its main constituents, can affect broiler's health especially with regard to its antioxidant effects, immunomodulatory properties and proper effects on gut bacterial pathogens and/or microbiota. It should be kept in mind that although major constituents of ZM essential oil (as the most studied preparation of the herb) are relatively similar, their relative content may show a broad range that can subsequently affect the outcome of ZM essential oil administration to broilers. Purpose: Albendazole is the drug of choice for chemotherapy of cystic echinococcosis (CE) but 40% of patients do not respond to it satisfactorily. With regard to the previously reported scolicidal activity of Zataria multiflora, this study was done to evaluate the efficacy of the co-administration of albendazole and Z. multiflora aromatic water (AW) on hydatid cysts in a murine model. Materials and Methods: Laboratory mice were infected with 1,500 viable protoscoleces. After development of hydatid cysts, the infected mice were allocated into four treatment and one control group. The mice of groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were treated orally with albendazole (100 mg/kg), Z. multiform AW (100 ml/l), albendazole (100 mg/kg) – Z. multiform AW and albendazole ((50 mg/kg) – Z. multiform AW respectively. Two months later, all the mice were euthanized and necropsied and the number, size and weight of hydatid cysts were compared between different groups. Results: The size of the largest cysts, as well as the total weight of cysts, were significantly lower (p <.05) in the mice treated with albendazole (50 mg/kg) – Z. multiflora AW in comparison to those treated with albendazole (100 mg/kg) alone. Conclusions: The results of this study revealed the superiority of co-administration of albendazole and Z. multiflora AW to albendazole alone in the treatment of CE in laboratory mice. Introduction: The current study aimed at evaluating the effects of Zataria Multiflora (ZM) on learning and memory of adult male offspring rats with prenatal lead-exposure. Methods: Pregnant rats in the case group received tap water containing 0.2% lead acetate throughout the gestation period. Control rats had free access to lead-free tap water. Two male offspring (two-month-old, weighing 180-200 g) from each mother were randomly selected and treated with either Z. Multiflora (50, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg/ Intraperitoneally (I.P) /20 day) or saline. Spatial memory of the control, saline, and ZM-treated rats was evaluated by a training trial and probe test using Morris water maze (6-8 rat/group). Results: The obtained results showed memory deficits including increased escape latency, and a greater traveled distance, as well as decrements in the frequency of crossings into target quadrants in prenatally lead-exposed male offspring compared with the controls. ZM treatment (200 mg/kg/i.p) ameliorated the memory deficits in male offspring by increasing the time spent and traveled distance in the trigger zone (P<0.01 vs. saline).There was no significant difference in swimming speed between the groups. Conclusion: The results showed memory deficits in prenatally lead-exposed male offspring. ZM treatment (especially 200 mg/kg) had beneficial effects on cognitive behavior and was indicated as the improvement of lead-induced memory deficits in prenatally lead-exposed male rats. The exact mechanism(s) is not determined yet, but it could be mediated through the anticholinesterase and antioxidant effects and also alterations in Central Nervous System (CNS) and neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Background and objectives: Utilization of essential oils instead of chemical preservatives has received significant attention in recent years. The present study aims to evaluate chemical composition and antibacterial and antioxidant properties of essential oils of Zataria multiflora, Artemisia deracunculus and Mentha piperita. Methods: Chemical profile of the essential oils was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The microwell dilution and agar disk diffusion methods were used to evaluate the antibacterial properties of the essential oils. Total phenolic content, β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching test and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays were carried out to determine the antioxidant properties. Results: Menthol (39.18%) and mentone (21.64%) were the main components of the essential oil of M. piperita, while estragol (34.75%) and limonene (15.72%) were the major components of the essential oil of A. dracunculus. The main components of the essential oil of Z. multiflora were carvacrol (36.81%) and thymol (33.04%). The essential oils of M. piperita and Z. multiflora showed greater antimicrobial effects. Moreover, Z. multiflora showed the greatest antioxidant activity among the essential oils. The total phenolic content of Z. multiflora was 228.14±0.45 mg gallic acid equivalent/g. Conclusion: Given their favorable antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, the essential oils of Z. multiflora, A. deracunculus and M. piperita can be used as natural food preservatives.
