[Objectives] In order to achieve precise herbicide application in lawn maintenance, this study addresses the challenge of weed identification due to the similar colors of weeds and turfgrass in natural environments. Based on the YOLOv5s target detection network, a model highlighting the color information of input images was proposed for lawn weed detection. [Methods]The input images were sliced, and the RGB channels were expanded to four times their original number. The sliced images underwent global average pooling and global max pooling to extract color information from the original images. The color channels were weighted to enhance the detection of monochromatic targets. To further improve the network's ability to recognize targets with similar shapes but different colors, the SPPF module was modified to the SPPFCSPC module, which increased the accuracy of weed identification in various lawn environments. [Results] The improved YOLOv5s network showed a good recognition effect on monochromatic targets, achieving a detection accuracy of 0.928 for common lawn weeds, a recall rate of 0.970, an mAP@0.5 of 0.943, and a frame rate of 104 f·s-1, with a model memory usage of 13.8 MB. The detection accuracy improved by 4.1 percentage points compared to YOLOv5s using the Focus module and by 5.4 percentage points compared to YOLOv5s using the Conv module. The detection results in sparse woodland lawns achieved an mAP@0.5 of 0.957. [Conclusions] The algorithm effectively identified various lawn weeds in natural environments and supported precise herbicide application for lawn weeds. LiDAR-unmanned aerial system (LiDAR-UAS) technology can accurately and efficiently obtain detailed and accurate three-dimensional spatial information of objects. The classification of objects in estuarine areas is highly important for management, planning, and ecosystem protection. Owing to the presence of slopes in estuarine areas, distinguishing between dense vegetation (lawns and trees) on slopes and the ground at the tops of slopes is difficult. In addition, the imbalance in the number of point clouds also poses a challenge for accurate classification directly from point cloud data. A multifeature-assisted and multilayer fused neural network (MLF-PointNet++) is proposed for LiDAR-UAS point cloud classification in estuarine areas. First, the 3D shape features that characterize the geometric characteristics of targets and the visible-band difference vegetation index (VDVI) that can characterize vegetation distribution are used as auxiliary features to enhance the distinguishability of dense vegetation (lawns and trees) on slopes and the ground at the tops of slopes. Second, to enhance the extraction of target spatial information and contextual relationships, the feature vectors output by different layers of set abstraction in the PointNet++ model are fused to form a combined feature vector that integrates low and high-level information. Finally, the focal loss function is adopted as the loss function in the MLF-PointNet++ model to reduce the effect of imbalance in the number of point clouds in each category on the classification accuracy. A classification evaluation was conducted using LiDAR-UAS data from the Moshui River estuarine area in Qingdao, China. The experimental results revealed that MLF-PointNet++ had an overall accuracy (OA), mean intersection over union (mIOU), kappa coefficient, precision, recall, and F1-score of 0.976, 0.913, 0.960, 0.953, 0.953, and 0.953, respectively, for object classification in the three representative areas, which were better than the corresponding values for the classification methods of random forest, BP neural network, Naive Bayes, PointNet, PointNet++, and RandLA-Net. The study results provide effective methodological support for the classification of objects in estuarine areas and offer a scientific basis for the sustainable development of these areas. Fire‐herbivory feedbacks strongly influence the formation of grazing lawns in savanna ecosystems. Preliminary findings suggest that small‐scale (<25 ha) fires can engineer grazing lawns by concentrating herbivores on the post‐burn green flush; however, the persistence of such grazing lawns over the longer term and without repeated fire is unknown.We used high‐resolution Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) to investigate the long‐term effects of fire manipulation on short grass structure (height, cover, volume and spatial continuity) and grazing lawn establishment in Kruger National Park, South Africa. We analysed the effects of fire exclusion and experimental burns applied over a 7‐year period (2013–2019) followed by a 1‐year cessation of burning at varying spatial scales during the early and late dry seasons.Fires contributed a fourfold increase in short grass cover, regardless of fire season or size. The distribution of grass height differed significantly between fire‐induced grazing lawns and recently unburnt parts of the landscape where controlled fires were excluded over the experimental period. The volume (corresponding to bulk density) of short grass on the landscape responded strongly to fires, with grass volume <20 cm in height increasing with both early and late dry season fires.Early dry season fires caused larger and more homogeneous short grass patches. Furthermore, early dry season fires were more influential in increasing the cover of the shortest grass height class (1–5 cm).Synthesis and applications. Our results demonstrate that fire‐induced grazing lawns can persist over the longer term, even when fires are no longer applied, leading to the creation of vertical and horizontal heterogeneity in the grass layer. Historically, white clover (Trifolium repens) seed was included in turfgrass seed mixtures to provide biodiversity and nitrogen (N) to lawns. White clover dicultures have been studied recently for inclusion in both warm- and cool-season turfgrasses, with the goals of reducing fertilizer applications and providing pollinator forage in lawns; however, other clovers have not been as widely researched in turfgrass. The objectives of this study were to evaluate 1) if white, strawberry (T. fragiferum), crimson (T. incarnatum), and rose (T. hirtum) clovers can persist in dicultures with Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis); 2) if clover inclusion in dicultures impacts broadleaf weed cover; and 3) if low levels of N fertilization impact clover persistence or quality of clover-bluegrass dicultures. Kentucky bluegrass was grown as a monoculture or as a diculture with each of the four clover species. Each mono- or diculture was then treated with a low rate of N fertilizer (48.8 kgha-1 N) or no N fertilizer to determine quality and percentage of grass, clover, or weed and bare-soil cover. Dicultures contained similar or less weed and bare-soil cover, and maintained similar or greater quality compared with bluegrass monocultures, indicating clover and Kentucky bluegrass dicultures are suitable alternatives to Kentucky bluegrass monoculture lawns, and can potentially lead to reduced fertilizer and pesticide requirements. The Ordovician-aged Lawn Hill Impact Structure is perhaps unique among documented craters, in that it is largely filled with slumped, allochthonous Cambrian carbonates partly fluidised by the impact shock. It is a complex geological feature, with a thin horizon of suevite beneath carbonate sheets. The bulk of the impact ejecta material was either deposited on top of the mobilised carbonates, and not preserved owing to erosion, or is present beneath the base of current drilling. The geometry of the crater in its final form has been modelled in three dimensions using gravity data and dipole–dipole-induced polarisation geophysics, with control from an extensive drill-hole library. Post-impact modification, including terrace formation and carbonate fill, has resulted in an asymmetric ring syncline, which extends to depths >600 m. In the data-rich area of the Century zinc–lead–silver deposit, on the southwest margin of the crater, both intact and remnants of the crater rim and impact ejecta blanket were preserved above the deposit. The Proterozoic ore deposit is located on a detached terrace, which slumped into the crater and was buried by allochthonous carbonates from the Georgina basin. The sequence of events can be shown to comprise: impact with crater formation and injection of carbonate dykes and inter-thrust wedges in the crater walls with concurrent suevite deposits inside and surge deposits outside the crater; this was rapidly followed by slumping of carbonate mega-blocks transported by a fluidised carbonate slurry into the crater, concomitant with collapse of Proterozoic terraces; finally, collapse of the central crater uplift generated imbricate slices of Cambrian carbonate among mainly Proterozoic rocks inside the ring syncline. After impact, the Ordovician-aged Lawn Hill Impact Structure crater was filled with slumped terraces of Proterozoic sediments and Pb–Zn ore, fluidised Cambrian carbonate, plus mega-clasts of both of those, on top of a thin but persistent hematitic suevite. Outside the crater, remnants of base surge and debris deposits represent the ejecta blanket. The Century Zn–Pb deposit was preserved on a disrupted terrace; the crater rim was partially preserved above the deposit and the mineralised sequence truncated by the crater wall. We design a scheme for laser-inertial odometry and mapping with bundle adjustment (BA-LIOM), which can greatly mitigate the problem of undesired ground warping due to sparsity of laser scans and significantly reduce odometry drift. Specifically, an Inertial measurement unit (IMU)-assisted adaptive voxel map initialization algorithm is proposed and elaborately integrated with the existing framework LIO-SAM, allowing for accurate registration in the beginning of the localization and mapping process. In addition, to accommodate to fast-moving and structure-less scenarios, we design a tightly coupled odometry, which jointly optimizes both the IMU preintegration constraints and scan matching with adaptive voxel maps. The voxels (edge and plane, respectively) are updated with BA optimization. And then the accurate mapping result is obtained by performing local BA. The proposed BA-LIOM is thoroughly assessed using datasets collected from multiple platforms over a variety of environments. Experimental results show the superiority of BA-LIOM over the state-of-the-art methods in robustness and precision, especially for large-scale scenarios. BA-LIOM improves the accuracy of localization by $61\%$ and $73\%$ on the buildings and lawn datasets, respectively, and has a $29\%$ accuracy improvement over LIO-SAM on the KITTI datasets. Identifying locations prone to exporting nitrogen (N), also called export control points, within residential landscapes, is key to determining N mitigation strategies. Within residential landscapes, lawns have the potential to act as either a sink of N via uptake and denitrification, or a source of N via additions such as fertilizer. Lawns draining to impervious surfaces are more likely to be sources of N loading to receiving water bodies through directly connected curb and sewer flow paths. We utilized small-scale rainfall experiments to examine whether hydrobiogeochemical measurements of potential denitrification and saturated infiltration rates were predictive of N mobilization, and how potential export control points (locations within the upper quartile of N mobilization values) varied spatially and temporally on residential lawns in Baltimore, Maryland. We found potential denitrification, but not infiltration, was predictive of N mobilization in runoff and leachate, only on fertilized lawns. Potential export control points occurred more often in the late summer and fall and 85% were on fertilized lawns. Applying fertilizer shortly before a rainfall event increased the N mobilization in runoff and leachate by an order of magnitude. Suburban front yards also had more potential export control points compared to backyards, which is notable as front yards are surrounded by impervious surfaces increasing their vulnerability to transporting N to downstream ecosystems. These findings highlight the spatial and temporal variability of N mobilization on lawns. Regional culture histories of the Pithouse Period in the Pine Lawn/Reserve region of the Mogollon in west-central New Mexico note considerable variability in site location, site layout, and ritual structures, with some increase in variability through time. Additionally, most Pithouse Period sites are occupied during only one phase, with few having evidence of occupation in two phases. Only three sites (Mogollon Village, SU, and Turkey Foot Ridge) have evidence of occupation in all three phases of the period. This paper explores why these three sites may have become persistent places throughout the Pithouse Period. Despite long‐standing knowledge of the benefits of riparian buffers for mitigating nonpoint source pollution, many streams are unprotected by buffers. Even landowners who understand ecological values of buffers mow riparian vegetation to the streambank. Do trends in rural riparian conditions reflect the development of riparian forest science? What motivates residential riparian management actions? Using high‐resolution orthoimagery, we quantified riparian conditions and trends between 1998 and 2015 in the rural upper Little Tennessee River basin in Macon County, North Carolina and explored how landowners view riparian zone management and riparian restoration programs. Buffer composition in 2015 was as follows: no buffer (32.5%), narrow (19.3%), forested (26.7%), shrub (7.2%), and intermediate (7.0%). Relative to 1998, the greatest decrease occurred in the no buffer class (−17.7%, 46 km) and the largest increases occurred in the shrub (+72.5%, 20 km) and narrow (12.6%, 14 km) classes. Forested buffer marginally increased. Semi‐structured interview data suggest that landowners prioritize recreational and scenic aspects of riparian buffers over ecological functions such as filtration and bank stabilization. Riparian restoration programs might be made more enticing to non‐adopters if outreach language appealed to landowner priorities, design elements demonstrated intentional management, and program managers highlighted areas where ecological goals and landowner values align. Land-use change is highly dynamic globally and there is great uncertainty about the effects of land-use legacies on contemporary environmental performance. We used a chronosequence of urban grasslands (lawns) that were converted from agricultural and forested lands from 10 to over 130 years prior to determine if land-use legacy influences components of soil biodiversity and composition over time. We used historical aerial imagery to identify sites in Baltimore County, MD (USA) with agricultural versus forest land-use history. Soil samples were taken from these sites as well as from existing well-studied agricultural and forest sites used as historical references by the National Science Foundation Long-Term Ecological Research Baltimore Ecosystem Study program. We found that the microbiomes in lawns of agricultural origin were similar to those in agricultural reference sites, which suggests that the ecological parameters on lawns and reference agricultural systems are similar in how they influence soil microbial community dynamics. In contrast, lawns that were previously forest showed distinct shifts in soil bacterial composition upon recent conversion but reverted back in composition similar to forest soils as the lawns aged over decades. Soil fungal communities shifted after forested land was converted to lawns, but unlike bacterial communities, did not revert in composition over time. Our results show that components of bacterial biodiversity and composition are resistant to change in previously forested lawns despite urbanization processes. Therefore land-use legacy, depending on the prior use, is an important factor to consider when examining urban ecological homogenization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lawns are a ubiquitous, human-made environment created for human enjoyment, leisure, and aesthetics. While net positive for carbon storage, lawns can have negative environmental impacts. Lawns require frequent mowing, which produces high levels of CO2 pollution and kills off native plants. Lawn fertilizing creates its own environmental pollution. One (presumed) ecologically-friendly alternative to lawns is restoration, or rewilding, of these spaces as meadows, which need less maintenance (e.g., infrequent mowing). However, little work has compared lawns against small-scale meadows for biodiversity outside of pollinator studies. Here, we tested the hypotheses that compared to lawns, meadows have (1) unique and higher levels of soil microbial biodiversity and (2) different soil physical and chemical characteristics. We conducted bacterial (16S) and fungal (ITS2) metabarcoding, and found that both bacteria and fungi are indeed more diverse in meadows (significantly so for bacteria). Species composition between meadows and lawns was significantly different for both types of microbes, including higher levels of mycorrhizal fungi in meadows. We also found that chemistry (e.g., potassium and metrics relating to pH) differed significantly between lawns and meadows and was more optimal for plant growth in the meadows. We believe these differences are caused by the different organisms dwelling in these habitats. In summary, these findings point to notable—positive—shifts in microbial and chemical compositions within meadows, further indicating that meadow restoration benefits biodiversity and soil health. Green spaces comprising natural turfgrass are ubiquitous in urban areas globally and allow for a variety of ecosystem services that benefit nature and people. However, traditional natural turfgrass is often critiqued for the number of inputs (e.g., fertilizer, water) required to maintain it. With those critiques in mind, some cities have turned to artificial turf as an alternative groundcover despite environmental and human health concerns (e.g., heavy metal leaching, volatile organic compounds). Research of artificial turf has been minimal compared with that of the growth of installations, especially related to social aspects of the surface. The current research used an in-person experiential case study of park visitors in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN, USA, to investigate how individuals perceived artificial turf compared with natural turfgrass as it relates to potential uses (e.g., resting/relaxing) and beliefs about sustainability (e.g., environmental impacts). Overall, participants preferred natural turfgrass across all uses but two (recreational and organized sports). The largest differences were observed for the use for picnic areas and the use for play areas for pets. Participants also perceived natural turfgrass as more sustainable than artificial turf, corresponding to the contribution to human health and well-being. In contrast, participants equally perceived the use of these surfaces in terms of natural resources. These findings have implications for public land managers, urban planners, city councils, and other stakeholders because they consider the adoption of artificial turf or other possible alternatives (e.g., low-input turfgrasses, bee lawns) to traditional turfgrass in the communities and their sustainability, maintenance, and cost-savings. Ground temperatures in a residential yard used for exercising dogs were measured and evaluated. The study involved four environments (sunny and dry, sunny and watered, shaded and dry, and shaded and watered), each with three measurement spots (green grass, brown grass, and bare ground). Measurements were made at two-hour intervals from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on August 15, 2020. Air temperatures ranged from 82.4 °F at 8:00 a.m. to 100.8 °F at 6:00 p.m. Ground temperatures varied considerably more, from 80.9 °F at bare ground in a shaded and watered spot at 8:00 a.m. to 148.2 °F at brown grass in a sunny and dry spot at 4:00 p.m. Over all times, median temperature ranged from 86.0 °F (range 80.9–87.9 °F) at bare ground in a shaded and watered spot to 125.4 °F (range 86.0–142.8 °F) at bare ground in a sunny and dry spot. The American landscape is well defined by the presence of turfgrass. To maintain the lush, green carpet, irrigation, fertilizer, and other necessary inputs are required. When these inputs are excessively applied, which is not uncommon, they are harmful to the natural environment. To mitigate potential adverse impacts, local and state governments are interested in policies that incentivize homeowners to maintain their lawns sustainably. But are there homeowners who are environmentally conscious and are willing to minimize their use of fertilizers or water? In this study, we evaluate the Floridian homeowners' preferences for high- and low-level inputs of irrigation water and fertilizer using latent class logit (LCL) regression models based on data collected from an online choice experiment survey. Results indicated that there are heterogeneous preferences for the level of irrigation water and fertilizer application by Floridian homeowners, including high-input users (33% of the sample), irrigation-conscious users (27%), fertilizer-conscious users (23%), and moderate-input users (17%). The article summarizes multivariate field trials of gel-forming soil conditioners for agriculture and urban landscaping in various climatic conditions from arid (O.A.E., Uzbekistan) to humid (Moscow region, Russia). The field test program included environmental monitoring of weather data, temperature, water–air regimes, salinity, alkalinity, and biological activity of various soils (sandy and loamy sandy Arenosols, Retisols, loamy Serozems), productivity and yield of plants (lawns, vegetables) and their quality, including pathogen infestation. The evolutionary line of polymer superabsorbents from radiation-crosslinked polyacrylamide (1995) to the patented "Aquapastus" material (2014–2020) with amphiphilic fillers and biocidal additives demonstrated not only success, but also the main problems of using hydrogels in soils (biodegradation, osmotic collapse, etc.), as well as their technological solutions. Along with innovative materials, our know-how consisted in the intelligent soil design of capillary barriers for water accumulation and antipathogenic and antielectrolyte protection of the rhizosphere. Gel-forming polymer conditioners and new technologies of their application increase the productivity of plant crops and the quality of biomass by 30–50%, with a 1.3–2-fold saving of water resources and reliable protection of the topsoil from pathogens and secondary salinization. Sexual dimorphism in timing of adult emergence is common in insects. In most insects, males emerge before female (protandry), however, some insects show earlier female emergence (protogyny). Here, I report the effects of photoperiod on protogyny in the lawn ground cricket (Polionemobius mikado). Upon exposure to different photoperiods at 26 °C, P. mikado females were found to emerge earlier than the males in the short‐day photoperiod. However, no difference in the nymphal development duration was observed between the sexes in the long‐day photoperiod. Protogynous development is expected to be more pronounced in the crickets that eclosed later in the year than those that eclosed earlier; therefore, its adaptive significance is closely associated with environmental seasonality that is encountered by the eclosed females. Based on the problem of insufficient accuracy of the original tiny YOLOv3 algorithm for object detection in a lawn environment, an Optimized tiny YOLOv3 algorithm with less computation and higher accuracy is proposed. Three reasons affect the accuracy of the original tiny YOLOv3 algorithm for detecting objects in a lawn environment. First, the backbone of the original algorithm is composed of a stack of a single convolutional layer and a max-pooling layer, which results in insufficient ability to extract feature information of objects. An enhancement module is proposed to enhance the feature extraction capability of the shallow layers of the network. Second, the information of the shallow convolutional layers of the backbone is not fully used, which results in insufficient detection capability for small objects. Third, the deep part of the backbone uses a convolutional layer with an excessive number of channels, which results in a large amount of computation. A multi-resolution fusion module is proposed to enhance the information interaction capability of the deep and shallow layers of the network, and reduce the computation. To verify the accuracy of this Optimized tiny YOLOv3 algorithm, the algorithm was tested on the dataset containing trunk, spherical tree and person, and compared with the current research. Frequent grazing can establish high forage value grazing lawns supporting high grazer densities, but can also produce overgrazed grass communities with unpalatable or low grass basal cover, supporting few grazers. Attempts to create grazing lawns via concentrated grazing, with a goal to increase grazer numbers, are thus risky without knowing how environmental conditions influence the likelihood of each outcome. We collected grass species and trait data from 33 frequently grazed grass communities across eastern South Africa (28 sites) and the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania (five sites), covering wide rainfall (336–987 mm year−1) and soil (e.g., 44%–93% sand) gradients. We identified four grass growth forms using hierarchical clustering on principal components analyses of trait data and assessed trait–environment and growth form–environment relationships using fourth corner and principal components analyses. We distinguished two palatable grass growth forms that both attract yet resist grazers and comprise grazing lawns: (1) "lateral attractors" that spread vegetatively via stolons and rhizomes, and (2) "tufted attractors" that form isolated tufts and may have alternate tall growth forms. By contrast, (3) tough, upright, tufted "resisters," and (4) "avoiders" with sparse architectures or that grow appressed to the soil surface, are of little forage value and avoided by grazers. Grazing lawns occurred across a wide range of conditions, typically comprising lateral attractor grasses in drier, sandy environments, and tufted attractor grasses in wetter, low‐sand environments. Resisters occurred on clay‐rich soils in mesic areas, while avoiders were widespread but scarce. While grazing lawns can be established under most conditions, monitoring their composition and cover is important, as the potential for overgrazing seems as widely relevant. Tufted attractor‐dominated lawns appear somewhat more vulnerable to degradation than lateral attractor‐dominated lawns. Allelopathic effect can lead to continuous cropping problem in plants. Mixed sowing of different species/varieties may overcome this problem. Two turfgrass (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) varieties Millennium2 and Arid3 were studied for their growth potential in mixture and effects on growth of lawns. The results showed that the mixed sowing proportion had significant impact on the growth of turfgrass. The main variety 0 showed improved physiological indices and better growth in mixture ratio of 4:1. The variety Millennium2 was more sensitive to mixture than Arid3. GC-MS analysis showed that the root aqueous extracts of Millennium2 and Arid3 contained 15 and 22 allelopathic compounds, respectively, and the content of 1,1-diethoxy-3-methylbutane was highest. Both varieties shared 9-chemicals (1,1-Diethoxybutane, 2-methylpentanoyl 2-methylpentanoate, 1,1-diethoxy-3-methylbutane, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxan, 6-ethyl-2-methyloctane, 5-methylundecane, 4,6-dimethyldodecane, henicosane and icosane), while Arid3 and Millennium2 individually contained 13 and 6 unique compounds, respectively. Symptoms of severe leaf curling, typical of begomovirus infection, were observed on a plant of Brugmansia arborea grown in lawns of Quaid-i-Azam university Islamabad, Pakistan. A begomovirus and its associated betasatellite were amplified and sequenced from infected plants. Nucleotide sequence showed that a monopartite begomovirus named Chilli leaf curl virus (ChLCV) and Chilli leaf curl betasatellite (ChLCB) are associated with the disease and it shared highest sequence identity 99% and 91% respectively with previously reported clones. Calvatia and Lycoperdon belong to the Gasteromycetes commonly called gasteroid fungi or puffballs. Their basidiospores are kept in a stomach-like glebal and spores are not discharged forcibly. An account of diagnostic characters, developmental morphology, anatomical features, and fairy ring formation of Calvatia cyathiformis and Lycoperdon sp. are presented during three (3) years (2017 - 2020) study. C. cyathiformis has epigeous habit on the grass lawn appearing after 2 - 3 weeks as a small whitish button and changed colour to cream and finally pinkish to purple at maturity. The basidiocarp was ball-shaped becoming two chambered with basal portion distinct from the upper. This fungus formed a complete circle fairy ring with a striking greening of the grass along the periphery of the circle where the basidiomata emerged. Lycoperdon sp. produced basidiocarp which was also epigeous and matured within 2-3 weeks. The basidiocarp was initially greyish white maturing into brownish colour. Lycoperdon sp. formed a semi-circle fairy ring without change in the grass colour for three consecutive years. Although fairy rings have been formed by other Lycoperdon sp. these present findings of semicircle fairy ring formation is being recorded for the first time in Ghana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is known that natural products can be used to strengthen and minimise stress of the gardening and sportive lawns, thus reducing the required inputs. In this paper, a trial is designed that allows for the study of the effect of a combination of two biostimulants and water-retaining agent products on different types of lawns. During 6 months, including the summer, soil and plant parameters are evaluated to compare the effects of treatments on soil temperature, humidity, and electrical conductivity, along with the NDVI of the grasslands. Treatment with the water-retaining agent and the second tested biostimulants has increased soil moisture by 10 %, with a greater effect on ornamental grasslands with lower maintenance requirements than sports lawns. The treatments with the two biostimulants without the water retaining agent do not lead to a significant variation in the aspect of the lawn. Marginal increases in the NDVI have been observed in all the treatments, which include the biostimulants. The surfaces of many organisms are covered with hairs, which are essential for their survival in a complex environment. The generation of artificial hairy surfaces from polymer materials has proven to be challenging as it requires the generation of structures with very high aspect ratios (AR). We report on a technique for the fabrication of surfaces covered with dense layers of very high AR nanoscale polymer hairs. To this, templates having pores with diameters of several hundred nanometers are filled with a polymer melt by capillary action. The polymer is then allowed to cool and the template is mechanically removed. Depending on the conditions employed, the formed structures can be a simple replica of the pore, or the polymer is deformed very strongly by cold drawing to yield in long hairs, with hair densities significantly up to 6,6 × 108 hairs/cm2 at AR of much higher than 200. The mechanism of hair formation is attributed to a delicate balance between the adhesion forces of the polymer in the pore and the yield force acting on it during mechanically demolding. We demonstrate how with very little effort and within a timescale of seconds unique topographies can be obtained, which can dramatically tailor the wetting properties of common polymers. Several urban canopy models now incorporate urban vegetation to represent local urban cooling related to natural soil and plant evapotranspiration. Nevertheless, little is known about the realism of simulating these processes and turbulent exchanges within the urban canopy. Here, the coupled modeling of thermal and hydrological exchanges was investigated for a lawn located in an urban environment and for which soil temperature and water content measurements were available. The ISBA diffusive (ISBA-DF) surface–vegetation–atmosphere transfer model is inline coupled to the Town Energy Balance urban canopy model to model mixed urban environments. For the present case study, ISBA-DF was applied to the lawn and first evaluated in its default configuration. Particular attention was then paid to the parameterization of turbulent exchanges above the lawn and to the description of soil characteristics. The results highlighted the importance of taking into account local roughness related to surrounding obstacles for computing the turbulent exchanges over the lawn and simulating realistic surface and soil temperatures. Important financial savings, along with reductions in environmental impact, can be achieved by planting lawns with low-input turfgrass species. Drawing on data from an online survey, this article provides empirical evidence on the factors that influence consumers' willingness to adopt low-input turfgrasses. We group consumers into two segments: Willing Adopters and Reluctant Homeowners. Regardless of segment, consumers who regard maintenance requirements as more important were more willing to adopt low-input turfgrasses, whereas those who placed a higher value on appearance, were more unlikely to change to a low-input turfgrass, especially for Reluctant Homeowners. We categorized the barriers to adoption as follows: 1) Promotion, 2) Benefits and Accessibility, 3) Peer Effect, 4) Sample, and 5) Information. Our models predict that consumers' willingness to adopt low-input turfgrass can be significantly increased if the identified barriers are removed. Based on our study, suppliers/retailers should adopt heterogeneous and multiple marketing strategies, such as promoting through multiple channels, informing and advising the public on proper information, providing photos or exhibiting in-store samples, triggering communication between different types of consumers, and providing incentives and improving accessibility, to target different consumer groups. The use of bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] and hybrid bermudagrass (C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis Burtt Davy) in lawns is rapidly increasing in Mediterranean Europe; however, the identification of optimal N fertilization practices is needed to shorten the long dormancy periods some cultivars undergo in these environments. A 2‐yr study was conducted at the agricultural experimental farm of Padova University from May 2016 until June 2018 to compare the effects of three N fertilization rates (160 kg N ha−1 without clippings returned, 80 kg N ha−1 with clippings returned, and 80 kg N ha−1 without clippings returned applied with a controlled‐release fertilizer) on two bermudagrass cultivars ('La Paloma', 'Yukon') and two hybrid bermudagrass cultivars ('Patriot', 'Tifway') by measuring summer and fall quality, spring green‐up, and root morphology. Bermudagrasses fertilized at 160 kg N ha−1 without clippings returned slightly increased turfgrass quality in the summer, but higher turf quality was recorded in plots fertilized at 80 kg N ha−1 with clippings returned after weekly mowing events in the fall. The same N rates had a positive effect on spring green‐up for 'La Paloma' and 'Tifway'; however, no benefits of increased N rates were detected on root morphology. Results suggest that returning clippings can be a powerful tool for reducing mineral N applications and increase growing season length in northern Italy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
