There is an increasing number of libraries devoted to parsing, manipulating and visualising phylogenetic trees in JavaScript. Many of these libraries bundle tree manipulation with visualisation, but have limited ability to manipulate trees and lack detailed documentation. As the number of web‐based phylogenetic tools and the size of phylogenetics datasets increases, there is a need for a library that parses, writes and manipulates phylogenetic trees that is interoperable with other phylogenetic and data visualisation libraries. Here we introduce PhyloJS, a light zero‐dependency TypeScript and JavaScript library for reading, writing and manipulating phylogenetic trees. PhyloJS allows for modification of and data‐extraction from trees to integrate with other phylogenetics and data visualisation libraries. It can swiftly handle large trees, up to at least 106 tips in size, making it ideal for developing the next generation of more complex web‐based phylogenetics applications handling ever larger datasets. The paper presents the development of a conceptual information model for optimizing land use and crop forecasting in agriculture, implemented using the PHP programming language, Javascript and the MYSQL database management system. The model is designed to solve optimization problems in various fields such as logistics, manufacturing, finance, etc. As part of the work, an information model was developed, which is a set of data, algorithms and software modules designed to solve optimization problems. The model is implemented based on PHP, Javascript, and MYSQL technologies. The model allows you to solve optimization problems of varying complexity using various optimization methods such as linear programming, nonlinear programming, artificial intelligence methods, etc. The model can be applied to solve optimization problems in various fields. In addition, the model allows you to solve optimization problems with a high degree of accuracy and in a short time, and also has a user-friendly interface that allows users to easily and quickly set optimization tasks. The current optimization problems and forecasting problems are not covered in the work. How this will be implemented is not indicated in the resulting information model. The relevance of scientific research – Every year farmers face the task of how to use the land. And they face many factors, including transportation costs, seed quality, cattle grazing and many other options for using the land. But using the simulation model or information system proposed by us, it is important to understand not only the actual use of the land, but also the economic profit. The system will indicate (advise) based on historical data as an expert, what kind of crop to plant so that there is maximum benefit. Agrotechnical indicators, allows you to create more accurate models and forecasts, which contributes to making informed decisions. Such a system allows farmers and agronomists to respond quickly to changing conditions, optimize land use and improve the efficiency of agricultural production in general. An information model has been developed that will make it possible to predict the harvest taking into account data on weather, soil, crops and historical yield data, as well as optimize land use taking into account data on soil type, climate, crop rotation and financial indicators. The present tutorial provides a technical overview of how to create web applications for online psychological experiments from scratch via the HTML/CSS/JavaScript framework. This approach allows virtually unlimited flexibility in accomplishing anything in an online experiment that a regular computer (or smartphone, etc.) is capable of. Apart from offering a fast introduction for complete beginners, this tutorial may also serve as a helpful guideline for more experienced programmers and researchers. Connected to the tutorial, a specific implementation is also given via the free and open-source template project at https://github.com/gasparl/expapp, intended to be improved by the community to always follow the latest technological advancements and general good practices. Introduction/purpose: Information systems represent a set of people, data, processes and information technologies related to the purpose of data collection, processing, storage and their filtering into useful information needed for supporting organizations or decision making. The information system is developed as a Web application with the help of the Javascript programming language, Node.js, and React.js, while in the background it relies on data storage and communication with the SQL database. Methods: Modern web application development tools are used and tested on low budget hardware. Results: Effective software for a car park with low maintenance cost and great reliability has been developed. Conclusion: The software made work easier, increased access to data and facilitated data review, reducing the possibility of error. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is one of the techniques most commonly employed in material characterization and identification. However, software licensing and proprietary file format limitations are commonly encountered hindrances when analyzing FTIR data. Spectrometers are generally provided with a license for a single copy of the operation/analysis software to run the machine, with additional copies requiring the purchase of software licenses. Furthermore, incompatibility between file formats across different spectrometers and spectral analysis software dictates additional limitations on analysts wishing to characterize spectra generated by devices incompatible with their software. This communication reports on the development of a free and open-source FTIR peak detection software, at the center of which is an in-house developed peak detection algorithm implemented in JavaScript (JS). Integrated circuits are an important part of electronic products, and their quality control and fault analysis are prerequisites for the long-term operation of electronic products. Scanning Acoustic Microscope (SAM), as a non-destructive defect detection method, has been widely used in imaging detection and internal defect identification of integrated circuits. In response to the intelligent demand for acoustic scanning image defect detection and the requirements for real-time and accurate detection, this paper develops a software for integrated circuit acoustic scanning image defect detection based on machine vision, providing integrated functions for image processing and image detection. The algorithm framework of this software combines deep learning technology, traditional image processing technology using OpenCV, and JavaScript interface design technology, allowing it to manage various types of integrated circuit data and analyze, process, and determine defects in scanning acoustic images. Since the initial release of the World Wide Web, the capabilities of web browsers have grown from presenting formatted documents to running complex programs, such as 3D game engines. The medical imaging community started to adopt technologies that came with the fifth major version of the HyperText Markup Language (HTML5). It led to the creation of various web-based radiological applications such as cornerstone.js or BrainBrowser. BrainBrowser supports both 3D and 2D rendering of neuroimaging data. However, it cannot run important image processing algorithms, such as brain extraction and linear registration, which are essential in most neuroimaging workflows. The most commonly used library that supports these algorithms is the FMRIB Software Library (FSL). We aim to build a web-based cross-platform neuroimaging platform that combines data visualization with image processing. We built our system as an extension of BrainBrowser. We developed WebMRI in JavaScript and designed the user interface using HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. We used Emscripten to port the brain extraction and linear registration tools of FSL to the web. We built WebMRI, a fully web-based extensible neuroimaging platform that combines the visualization capabilities of BrainBrowser with the brain extraction and linear registration tools of FSL by porting them from C++ to WebAssembly. We extended BrainBrowser with a plugin system that makes it easy to bring other processing algorithms into the platform. Conversational User Interfaces (CUI) are widely used, with about 1.8 billion users worldwide in 2020. For designing and building CUI, dialogue designers have to decide on how the CUI communicates with users and what dialogue strategies to pursue (e.g. reactive vs. proactive). Dialogue strategies can be evaluated in user tests by comparing user perceptions and reactions to different dialogue strategies. Simulating CUI and running them online, for example on crowdsourcing websites, is an attractive avenue to collecting user perceptions and reactions, as they can be gathered time- and cost-effectively. However, developing and deploying a CUI on a crowd sourcing platform can be laborious and requires technical proficiency from researchers. We present Chatbot Language (CBL) as a framework to quickly develop and deploy CUI on crowd sourcing platforms, without requiring a technical background. CBL is a library with specialized CUI functionality, which is based on the high-level language JavaScript. In addition, CBL provides scripts that use the API of the crowd sourcing platform Mechanical Turk (MT) in order to (a) create MT Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs) and (b) retrieve the results of those HITs. We used CBL to run experiments on MT and present a sample workflow as well as an example experiment. Conducting research via the Internet is a formidable and ever-increasingly popular option for behavioral scientists. However, it is widely acknowledged that web-browsers are not optimized for research: In particular, the timing of display changes (e.g., a stimulus appearing on the screen), still leaves room for improvement. So far, the typically recommended best (or least bad) timing method has been a single (RAF) JavaScript function call within which one would give the display command and obtain the time of that display change. In our Study 1, we assessed two alternatives: Calling the RAF twice consecutively, or calling the RAF during a continually ongoing independent loop of recursive RAF calls. While the former has shown little or no improvement as compared to single RAF calls, with the latter we significantly and substantially improved overall precision, and achieved practically faultless precision in most practical cases. Our two basic methods for effecting display changes, plain text change and color filling, proved equally efficient. In Study 2, we reassessed the "RAF loop" timing method with image elements in combination with three different display methods: We found that the precision remained high when using either or changes – while drawing on a element consistently led to comparatively lower precision. We recommend the "RAF loop" display timing method for improved precision in future studies, and or changes when using image stimuli. The urgent need to protect user privacy and security has emerged as the World Wide Web has become an increasingly necessary part of daily life. Browser fingerprinting is a very interesting topic in the industry of technology security. New technology will always raise new security issues and browser fingerprinting will undoubtedly follow the same process. It has become one of the most popular topics in online privacy because, to date, there is still no exact solution as to how to stop it entirely. The majority of solutions just aim to reduce the likelihood of obtaining a browser fingerprint. Research on browser fingerprinting is unquestionably required since it is essential to educate users, developers, policymakers, and law enforcement about it so that they can make strategic choices based on knowledge. Browser fingerprinting must be recognised in order to defend against privacy problems. A browser fingerprint is described as data gathered by the receiving server to identify a distant device, and it is different from cookies. Websites frequently utilize browser fingerprinting to obtain information about the type and version of the browser, as well as the operating system, and other current settings. It has been known that even when cookies are disabled, fingerprints can be used to fully or partially identify users or devices. In this communication paper, a new insight into the challenge of browser fingerprint is encouraged as a new venture. Thus, the initial way to truly understand the browser fingerprint is the need to collect browser fingerprints. In this work, the process of data collection for browser fingerprinting through scripting, to offer a complete all-in-one fingerprinting test suite, has been thoughtfully divided into appropriate sections and grouped with key information to be carried out. The objective is to gather fingerprint data with no personal identification information and make it an open source of raw datasets in the industry for any future research purposes. To our best knowledge, there are no open datasets made available for browser fingerprints in the research field. The dataset will be widely accessible by anyone interested in obtaining those data. The dataset collected will be very raw and will be in the form of a text file. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is widely used in behavioral, social, and education research. Drawing publication-ready path diagrams for SEM is not a pleasant task with the existing software. The article introduces an open-source web-based graphical application, semdiag, for drawing WYSIWYG SEM path diagrams interactively. The application is an on-going project developed by the authors using JavaScript, and it can be used in major web browsers, both online and offline. The limitation in conveying information from the village head to the community is still very slow because they have to write to the head of the neighborhood unit (RT). This condition is very ineffective, so the purpose of this research is to build an application that can facilitate the government and the Tolada village community in getting information quickly. This application is built using the programming language PHP, Javascript and MySQL DBMS which is then tested for quality by the black box method. The results of the study indicate that this application is feasible and effective for use by the government and the local community based on the recommendation of an expert validator in the field of information technology. Here we describe a JavaScript toolbox to perform online rating studies with auditory material. The main feature of the toolbox is that audio samples are associated with visual tokens on the screen that control audio playback and can be manipulated depending on the type of rating. This allows the collection of single- and multidimensional feature ratings, as well as categorical and similarity ratings. The toolbox (github.com/pwdonh/audio_tokens) can be used via a plugin for the widely used jsPsych, as well as using plain JavaScript for custom applications. Due to their increasing complexity, today’s software systems are frequently built by leveraging reusable code in the form of libraries and packages. Software ecosystems (e.g., npm) are the primary enablers of this code reuse, providing developers with a platform to share their own and use others’ code. These ecosystems evolve rapidly: developers add new packages every day to solve new problems or provide alternative solutions, causing obsolete packages to decline in their importance to the community. Developers should avoid depending on packages in decline, as these packages are reused less over time and may become less frequently maintained. However, current popularity metrics (e.g., Stars, and Downloads) are not fit to provide this information to developers because their semantics do not aptly capture shifts in the community interest. In this article, we propose a scalable approach that uses the package’s centrality in the ecosystem to identify packages in decline. We evaluate our approach with the npm ecosystem and show that the trends of centrality over time can correctly distinguish packages in decline with an ROC–AUC of 0.9. The approach can capture 87% of the packages in decline, on average 18 months before the trend is shown in currently used package popularity metrics. We implement this approach in a tool that can be used to augment the npms metrics and help developers avoid packages in decline when reusing packages from npm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In view of the scattered distribution of lost and found information on campus, the difficulty of the owner's inquiry, and the low success rate of item retrieval, this study uses image character recognition technology to develop a set of WeChat-based lost and found applets. This program can recognize the card number, name, and other text information in the lost property picture of the certificate, and fill in the form automatically. When the uploaded lost property information matches the school database personnel information, the system will notify the owner to claim the item via SMS and WeChat. The system has been put into operation on campus, which has improved the release efficiency of lost and found information and increased the success rate of lost property recovery. Background: Only a small number of apps addressing allergic rhinitis (AR) patients have been evaluated. This makes their selection difficult. We aimed to introduce a new approach to market research for AR apps, based on the automatic screening of Apple App and Google Play stores. Methods: A JavaScript programme was devised for automatic app screening, and applied in a market assessment of AR self‐management apps. We searched the Google Play and Apple App stores of three countries (USA, UK and Australia) with the following search terms: "hay fever", "hayfever", "asthma", "rhinitis", "allergic rhinitis". Apps were eligible if symptoms were evaluated. Results obtained with the automatic programme were compared to those of a blinded manual search. As an example, we used the search to assess apps that can be used to design a combined medication score for AR. Results: The automatic search programme identified 39 potentially eligible apps out of a total of 1593 retrieved apps. Each of the 39 apps was individually checked, with 20 being classified as relevant. The manual search identified 19 relevant apps (out of 6750 screened apps). Combining both methods, a total of 21 relevant apps were identified, pointing to a sensitivity of 95% and a specificity of 99% for the automatic method. Among these 21 apps, only two could be used for the combined symptom‐medication score for AR. Conclusions: The programmed algorithm presented herein is able to continuously retrieve all relevant AR apps in the Apple App and Google Play stores, with high sensitivity and specificity. Psychological research is increasingly moving online, where web-based studies allow for data collection at scale. Behavioural researchers are well supported by existing tools for participant recruitment, and for building and running experiments with decent timing. However, not all techniques are portable to the Internet: While eye tracking works in tightly controlled lab conditions, webcam-based eye tracking suffers from high attrition and poorer quality due to basic limitations like webcam availability, poor image quality, and reflections on glasses and the cornea. Here we present MouseView.js, an alternative to eye tracking that can be employed in web-based research. Inspired by the visual system, MouseView.js blurs the display to mimic peripheral vision, but allows participants to move a sharp aperture that is roughly the size of the fovea. Like eye gaze, the aperture can be directed to fixate on stimuli of interest. We validated MouseView.js in an online replication (N = 165) of an established free viewing task (N = 83 existing eye-tracking datasets), and in an in-lab direct comparison with eye tracking in the same participants (N = 50). Mouseview.js proved as reliable as gaze, and produced the same pattern of dwell time results. In addition, dwell time differences from MouseView.js and from eye tracking correlated highly, and related to self-report measures in similar ways. The tool is open-source, implemented in JavaScript, and usable as a standalone library, or within Gorilla, jsPsych, and PsychoJS. In sum, MouseView.js is a freely available instrument for attention-tracking that is both reliable and valid, and that can replace eye tracking in certain web-based psychological experiments. A Web-based database system is designed and implemented in this paper which brings out the heat flow map for the Indian region. The Database is linked to carry out the computations and get thermal structure, lithospheric thickness across a few selected regions of India together with the uncertainties associated with the model parameters which can give the error estimate to the associated temperatures. This Web portal allows the user to just click on any region and get the subsurface thermal parameters and the thermal structure of that particular region where ever the data is available. It is developed based on MySQL for database and (Hypertext Preprocessor) PHP scripting language, JavaScript, (Cascading Style Sheets) CSS for application and web page designing, and leaflet for mapping. The data required are compiled from the peer-reviewed published literature, technical reports, and from different thesis on thermal data for the Indian region and stored in a centralized location called the database. The present system is built on the three-tier architecture wherein it has the presentation, application logic, and data management which gives the heat flow values at almost 170 locations in the Indian region and the thermal structure at some locations. Aim: Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a free Web‐based spatial analysis platform that requires only a web browser and an Internet connection to programmatically access and analyse data from its multi‐petabyte catalog of regularly updated satellite imagery (e.g. MODIS, Landsat, Sentinel) and other geospatial datasets. The high computing capacity of GEE can make computationally demanding analyses more accessible to researchers and practitioners, especially those with limited access to advanced computational resources. Here, we present a workflow in GEE to fit species distribution models, offering direct access to a multi‐petabyte catalog of raster products to obtain estimates of habitat suitability. Innovation: We implemented a workflow for species distribution modelling in GEE that includes importing species occurrence data into the GEE platform, selecting and preparing predictor variables, and performing model fitting with spatial or temporal split‐block cross‐validation techniques. We present three case studies that demonstrate: (i) a baseline SDM workflow that produces informative model predictions, (ii) a workflow that accounts for temporal variability in predictor variables to study changes in habitat suitability over time and (iii) a complex and computationally demanding analysis incorporating thousands of satellite images for modelling habitat suitability at high spatial resolution. Main Conclusions: Our SDM workflow allows users to benefit from the high speed and performance of GEE without the need for significant computing infrastructure. This workflow may be especially beneficial to researchers in countries where computing power is limited, as SDMs frequently require the download, storage and processing of large raster datasets. We also discuss key limitations of implementing SDMs in GEE, such as user memory limits and the lack of high‐level functions. Web-based data collection is increasingly popular in both experimental and survey-based research because it is flexible, efficient, and location-independent. While dedicated software for laboratory-based experimentation and online surveys is commonplace, researchers looking to implement experiments in the browser have, heretofore, often had to manually construct their studies' content and logic using code. We introduce lab.js, a free, open-source experiment builder that makes it easy to build studies for both online and in-laboratory data collection. Through its visual interface, stimuli can be designed and combined into a study without programming, though studies' appearance and behavior can be fully customized using html, css, and JavaScript code if required. Presentation and response times are kept and measured with high accuracy and precision heretofore unmatched in browser-based studies. Experiments constructed with lab.js can be run directly on a local computer and published online with ease, with direct deployment to cloud hosting, export to web servers, and integration with popular data collection platforms. Studies can also be shared in an editable format, archived, re-used and adapted, enabling effortless, transparent replications, and thus facilitating open, cumulative science. This work is dedicated to the design, implementation and evaluation of a new algorithm visualization system. The currently available systems and libraries are briefly compared with each other based on the visualizations and functionalities they provide. Since the analyzed tools didn't meet all of the given requirements, we decided that the development of a new system for algorithm and data structure visualizations would be beneficial for use in teaching the subject Data Structures and Algorithms. The new system was designed to be easily usable, extensible, available and to cover the basic functionalities available in similar systems and other useful features. The proposed system provides three types of visualizations: predefined visualizations, to explain how each data structure and algorithm works; interactive visualizations, to let the user interact with the visualization directly; and interactive exercises, to let the users test their knowledge. These three types of visualizations cover the whole learning process, provide theoretical and practical knowlegde, and also a way to test their knowledge. The system is implemented in the form of a web application and, for the visualizations, the JSAV library is used. Discovering server HTTP endpoints – essentially, enumerating the server's attack surface – is an important step of every black-box web security scanner. One of the main methods of doing that is inferring server endpoints from the client side, determining what HTTP requests can be sent from client to server. This is trivial for requests triggered by HTML markup elements, such as links and forms, but is much harder for requests sent by JavaScript. Existing approaches to determining requests sent from JavaScript are based on a technique known as dynamic crawling - automated interaction with user interface elements using a headless browser. Dynamic crawling fails when the code that sends a request is impossible or very difficult to trigger with interface interaction. We propose a different approach for finding HTTP requests sent by JS code, which uses static code analysis. While analyzing JavaScript statically is known to be hard and applying existing analyzers to real-world web pages usually does not work, we propose a new lightweight analysis algorithm that can work on pages of real websites and can discover server endpoints that dynamic crawlers cannot. Evaluation results show that augmenting a black-box scanner with the proposed static analysis may significantly improve server-side endpoint coverage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A JavaScript framework named 'jsPsych' developed by de Leeuw (2015) is widely used for conducting Web-based experiments, and its functionality can be enhanced by using plugins. This article introduces a new jsPsych plugin which enables experimenters to set different onset times for geometric figures, images, sounds, and moving objects, and present them synchronized with the refresh of the display. Moreover, this study evaluated the stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) using visual and audio stimuli. The results showed that: (i) the deviations from the intended SOAs between two visual stimuli were less than 10 ms, (ii) the variability across browser–computer combinations was reduced compared with the no-plugin condition, and (iii) the variability of the SOAs between visual and audio stimuli was relatively large (about 50 ms). This study concludes that although the use of audio stimuli is somewhat limited, the new plugin provides experimenters with useful and accurate methods for conducting psychophysical experiments online. We are presenting an online workflow puzzle, which runs in a browser. The player can put together puzzle pieces to pre-defined production chains. Extensive online help supports the player in laying out the puzzle pieces correctly. The puzzle is based on the process-resource model, which is also the basis of the Job Definition Format. Complaint management has served as a unique and efficient method of assessing student and staff satisfaction in any university community. It has helped foster improvement and change in the way operations are carried out and ensure that the students and staff are served to the best of the University's ability. Although there have been massive improvements using complaint management, there is still a lack of efficiency when it comes to manual complaints management. This work is aimed at developing a web-based complaint management system for a University community with the use of JavaScript as the programming language and MongoDB server as the database, in order to improve the way complaints are handled and analyzed in the University. It was discovered from this research that students were genuinely interested in an online platform for submitting complaints as it helped to simplify the process. With the real-time changes of wind speed and operating conditions, it is a challenge to fully tap the active power regulation ability and improve the control performance of automatic generation control (AGC) in a wind farm (WF). The essence of tapping the active power regulation ability is to realise the coordination and complementarity of each wind turbine's (WT's) dynamic adjustment performance (DAP). To address this, a novel data mining method is developed to derive the internal relations between WTs' output power and pitch angle, impeller speed and pitch angle during the power adjustment process, and a unified mechanism model is established to describe DAP of WTs. Based on the discovered relationship between WTs' DAP and its operating states, an active power distribution algorithm and a dynamic interval control method are proposed. Then, an active power dynamic interval control strategy that has been implemented using Java script in MyEclipse for WFs is further developed. The control strategy has been tested and applied in a 50 MW WF in northwest China. The preliminary results showed that the control strategy has improved the rapidity and accuracy of AGC in the WF. Malware still constitutes a major threat in the cybersecurity landscape, also due to the widespread use of infection vectors such as documents. These infection vectors hide embedded malicious code to the victim users, facilitating the use of social engineering techniques to infect their machines. Research showed that machinelearning algorithms provide effective detection mechanisms against such threats, but the existence of an arms race in adversarial settings has recently challenged such systems. In this work, we focus on malware embedded in PDF files as a representative case of such an arms race. We start by providing a comprehensive taxonomy of the different approaches used to generate PDFmalware and of the corresponding learning-based detection systems. We then categorize threats specifically targeted against learning-based PDF malware detectors using a well-established framework in the field of adversarial machine learning. This framework allows us to categorize known vulnerabilities of learning-based PDF malware detectors and to identify novel attacks that may threaten such systems, along with the potential defense mechanisms that can mitigate the impact of such threats. We conclude the article by discussing how such findings highlight promising research directions towards tackling the more general challenge of designing robust malware detectors in adversarial settings. Web applications can implement procedures for studying the speed of mental processes (mental chronometry) and can be administered via web browsers on most commodity desktops, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. This approach to conducting mental chronometry offers various opportunities, such as increased scale, ease of data collection, and access to specific samples. However, validity and reliability may be threatened by less accurate timing than specialized software and hardware can offer. We examined how accurately web applications time stimuli and register response times (RTs) on commodity touchscreen and keyboard devices running a range of popular web browsers. Additionally, we explored the accuracy of a range of technical innovations for timing stimuli, presenting stimuli, and estimating stimulus duration. The results offer some guidelines as to what methods may be most accurate and what mental chronometry paradigms may suitably be administered via web applications. In controlled circumstances, as can be realized in a lab setting, very accurate stimulus timing and moderately accurate RT measurements could be achieved on both touchscreen and keyboard devices, though RTs were consistently overestimated. In uncontrolled circumstances, such as researchers may encounter online, stimulus presentation may be less accurate, especially when brief durations are requested (of up to 100 ms). Differences in RT overestimation between devices might not substantially affect the reliability with which group differences can be found, but they may affect reliability for individual differences. In the latter case, measurement via absolute RTs can be more affected than measurement via relative RTs (i.e., differences in a participant's RTs between conditions). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we address an unsolved problem in the real world: how to ensure the integrity of the web content in a browser in the presence of malicious browser extensions? The problem of exposing confidential user credentials to malicious extensions has been widely understood, which has prompted major banks to deploy two-factor authentication. However, the importance of the "integrity" of the web content has received little attention. We implement two attacks on real-world online banking websites and show that ignoring the "integrity" of the web content can fundamentally defeat two-factor solutions. To address this problem, we propose a cryptographic protocol called DOMtegrity to ensure the end-to-end integrity of the DOM structure of a web page from delivering at a web server to the rendering of the page in the user's browser. DOMtegrity is the first solution that protects DOM integrity without modifying the browser architecture or requiring extra hardware. It works by exploiting subtle yet important differences between browser extensions and in-line JavaScript code. We show how DOMtegrity prevents the earlier attacks and a whole range of man-in-the-browser attacks. This study covers an in-situ analysis of simulated coal quality attribute variations of a power plant in Tufanbeyli/Adana, Turkey. Three main coal quality variables including calorific value, sulfur and ash content were simulated by Sequential Gaussian co-simulation method. The results were validated by a number of tests. A this-study-specific JavaScript is written to reveal the variations of coal qualities in a specific extraction route and capacity for both short and long-term production planning and scheduling. Participation in web surveys via smartphones increased continuously in recent years. The reasons for this increase are a growing proportion of smartphone owners and an increase in mobile Internet access. However, research has shown that smartphone respondents are frequently distracted and/or multitasking, which might affect completion and response behavior in a negative way. We propose 'SurveyMotion (SMotion)', a JavaScript-based tool for mobile devices that can gather information about respondents' motions during web survey completion by using sensor data. Specifically, we collect data about the total acceleration (TA) of smartphones. We conducted a lab experiment and varied the form of survey completion (e.g. standing or walking). Furthermore, we employed questions with different response formats (e.g. radio buttons and sliders) and measured response times. The results reveal that SMotion detects higher TAs of smartphones for respondents with comparatively higher motion levels. In addition, respondents' motion level affects response times and the quality of responses given. Background: While several JavaScript packages for visualizing phylogenetic trees exist, most are best characterized as frameworks that are designed with a specific set of tasks in mind. Extending such packages to use cases that are not available as features often ends up being difficult. Moreover, existing packages tend to produce standalone widgets that are not designed to serve as middleware, as opposed to flexible tools that can integrate with other components of an application. Results: phylotree.js is a library that extends the popular data visualization framework d3.js, and is suitable for building JavaScript applications where users can view and interact with phylogenetic trees. The effects of such interactions can be captured and communicated to other package components, making it possible to engineer complex and responsive applications that include phylogenetic trees. phylotree.js implements several abstractions in addition to features, and comes with a documented application programming interface, thus promoting interoperability and extensibility. Example applications include a tool to visualize and annotate phylogenetic trees, a web application for comparative sequence analysis, a structural viewer that interacts with a large phylogenetic tree, and an interactive tanglegram. Conclusions: phylotree.js is a useful tool and application module for a variety of computational biology software applications. The code is available on Github and is released under the MIT license. JavaScript has been a de facto standard language for client-side web programs and now it is expanding its territory to general purpose programs. In this article,we classify the client-side JavaScript research for the last decade or so into six topics: static analysis, dynamic analysis, formalization and reasoning, type safety and JIT optimization, security for web applications, and empirical studies. Because the majority of the research has focused on static and dynamic analyses of JavaScript, we evaluate research trends in the analysis of JavaScript first and then the other topics. Web surveys are commonly used in social research because they are usually cheaper, faster, and simpler to conduct than other modes. They also enable researchers to capture paradata such as response times. Particularly, the determination of proper values to define outliers in response time analyses has proven to be an intricate challenge. In fact, to a certain degree, researchers determine them arbitrarily. In this study, we use “SurveyFocus (SF)”—a paradata tool that records the activity of the web-survey pages—to assess outlier definitions based on response time distributions. Our analyses reveal that these common procedures provide relatively sufficient results. However, they are unable to detect all respondents who temporarily leave the survey, causing bias in the response times. Therefore, we recommend a two-step procedure consisting of the utilization of SF and a common outlier definition to attain a more appropriate analysis and interpretation of response times. Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), in combination with high quality raster graphics provide realistic three-dimensional (3D) representations of the globe (virtual globe) and amazing navigation experience over the terrain through earth browsers. In addition, the adoption of interoperable geospatial mark-up languages (e.g. KML) and open programming libraries (Javascript) makes it also possible to create 3D spatial objects and convey on them the sensation of any type of texture by utilizing open 3D representation models (e.g. Collada). One step beyond, by employing WebGL frameworks (e.g. Cesium.js, three.js) animation and motion effects are attributed on 3D models. However, major GIS-based functionalities in combination with all the above mentioned visualization capabilities such as for example animation effects on selected areas of the terrain texture (e.g. sea waves) as well as motion effects on 3D objects moving in dynamically defined georeferenced terrain paths (e.g. the motion of an animal over a hill, or of a big fish in an ocean etc.) are not widely supported at least by open geospatial applications or development frameworks. Towards this we developed and made available to the research community, an open geospatial software application prototype that provides high level capabilities for dynamically creating user defined virtual geospatial worlds populated by selected animated and moving 3D models on user specified locations, paths and areas. At the same time, the generated code may enhance existing open visualization frameworks and programming libraries dealing with 3D simulations, with the geospatial aspect of a virtual world. Most maps are now consumed online, yet colleges and universities struggle to keep their cartography and GIScience curricula up to date with the use of modern web technologies. I present a qualitative interview study aimed at providing insight into current teaching practices, along with challenges that may hamper the uptake of web mapping technologies in the classroom. The study involved interviews with 20 instructors of web mapping courses at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Participants were asked about the overall vision for their web mapping courses, the scope of material covered, what specific topics are included, which web technologies they use and why, their preferred teaching pedagogy, and what challenges they have experienced. This paper proposes a method that uses an imaging reverse proxy server to protect contents of web sites against plagiarists. The imaging reverse proxy server is placed between clients (web browsers) and web servers, and it behaves like as if it were a normal reverse proxy server except converting author specified contents to images that have almost the same appearances as the original contents. The proposed method makes it difficult for plagiarists to copy contents of a web page because plagiarists can never access original contents but converted images through the proposed server. We evaluated the proposed method by measuring response times and transferred sizes, and the result of the evaluation shows that the proposed method is a great help for original authors of web sites to protect their contents against plagiarists. We present a static analysis for determining whether and to what extent functions in JavaScript programs are pure. To this end, the analysis classifies functions as pure functions, observers, or procedures. A function is pure if none of its executions generate or depend upon externally observable side effects. A function is an observer as soon as one of its executions depends on an external side effect, but none of its executions generate observable side effects. Otherwise, the function is classified as a procedure. Function executions and associated callers are found by traversing all reachable function execution contexts on the call stack at the point where an effect occurs. Our approach is based on a flow analysis that, in addition to computing traditional control and value flow, keeps track of read and write effects. To increase the precision of our purity analysis, we combine it with an intraprocedural analysis that determines freshness of variables and objects. We formalize the core aspects of our technique and discuss its implementation and results on common JavaScript benchmarks. Results show that our approach is capable of determining function purity in the presence of higher-order functions, dynamic property expressions, and prototypal inheritance. Context: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotyping at our institution is performed using the Versant HCV genotype 2.0 Line Probe Assay (LiPA). The last steps of this procedure are manual, laborious, and error-prone process that involves the comparison of the banding pattern on a test strip to a physical reference table. Aim: We developed a web-based HCV genotype interpretation platform that utilizes a scanned image to generate the genotypes, thus minimizing interpretation time and reducing error. Subjects and Methods: HCV Genie 2 utilizes a database of banding patterns in conjuncture with image analysis algorithms to determine the genotype for any number of scanned LiPA strips. HCV Genie 2 is built with client-side JavaScript; allowing the program to run in the user' browser rather than on an unknown server, essentially eliminating data and patient privacy concerns. Results: HCV Genie 2 was tested over 2 months and proved identical to human expert interpretation for 148 samples (>1000 bands identified). Manual intervention was required only for two faint bands and one false-positive band; this was done utilizing the built-in-user interface. Utilizing the original method, the trained laboratory technician interpretation time for 16 samples was 13.8 (±0.96) min as compared to 5.0 (±1.09) min with HCV Genie 2, a 63.8% decrease. In addition to the time savings, the new method provides an additional validation step, which decreases the potential for errors. Conclusions: Our institution has moved exclusively to utilize the new techniques and tools described here. Both experienced technicians and the molecular pathologists at our institution prefer the workflow using HCV Genie. It is easier for the technicians to prepare and document, and the pathologists are more rapidly able to review and confirm results. The use of this tool will lead to increase the quality of patient care delivered through this test methodology by decreasing the potential for error.
