Abstract After shortly highlighting the main features of the classical hydrodynamic theory of pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF), the present paper describes a new approach to predict CHF in the presence of a submerged liquid jet impinging onto the heating surface in saturated conditions at both atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressure. This approach, based on the instability of liquid-vapor interfaces, has proved to be able of fitting CHF data for submerged jets as well as for electrohydrodynamic (ionic) jets. The main dimensionless parameters governing the phenomenon have been disclosed, namely the Bond number and an equivalent Froude number. Two distinct fluid-dynamic regimes have been identified, herein named velocity-prevailing and gravity-prevailing , depending on the equivalent Froude number values and the subsequent effect of vapor buoyancy on liquid-solid contacts. The developed correlations providing CHF for both regimes have coefficients of determination higher than 0.9 with respect to the available experimental data. In this study a probabilistic approach for optimal sizing of cogeneration systems under long-term uncertainty in energy demand is proposed. A dynamic simulation framework for detailed modeling of the energy system is defined, consisting in both traditional and optimal operational strategies evaluation. A two-stage stochastic optimization algorithm is developed, adopting Monte Carlo method for the definition of a multi-objective optimization problem. An Italian hospital facility has been used as a case study and a gas internal combustion engine is considered for the cogeneration unit. The results reveal that the influence of uncertainties on both optimal size and annual total cost is significant. Optimal size obtained with the traditional deterministic approach are found to be sub-optimal (up to 30% larger) and the predicted annual cost saving is always lower when accounting for uncertainties. Pareto frontiers of different CHP configurations are presented and show the effectiveness of the proposed method as a useful tool for risk management and focused decision-making, as tradeoffs between system efficiency and system robustness. This paper deals with the problem of an infinite cylindrical heat source embedded into a saturated porous medium and subject to a cross-axial Darcian flow. Only forced convection is considered. We derived the transient dimensionless solution through a combined analytical – numerical method consisting of four steps: (a) a preliminary dimensional analysis of the constitutive equations of the problem in order to find the dimensionless groups governing the solution; (b) the identification of the validity range of the model as a function of the just-mentioned dimensionless groups; (c) the numerical resolution of the problem; (d) the synthesis of the numerical results in a general dimensionless form. Specifically, we provide several dimensionless maps of the 2D thermal field evolution for six different orders of magnitude of the Péclet number ( 10 - 3 – 10 2 ) . The evolution of the temperature of the heat source is fully illustrated and discussed through plain dimensionless criteria. Then, we discuss the time, space and fluid velocity scales in which the solution is practically equivalent to the ones given by a linear heat source and a purely conductive model. We conclude that the present model has to be employed to evaluate the temperature in proximity of the heat source when the reference Péclet number is greater than 0.5. On the contrary, the linear model can be successfully used for radial distances 5–10 times greater that the heat source radius, depending on the reference Péclet number. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The heat transfer performance of an ionic jet impinging on the upper surface of a heated plate is investigated. Ions are injected by a point, set at high voltage. The working fluid is the viscous dielectric ester MIDEL 7131, a refrigerant for power transformers. Different tests are performed on the working fluid, varying the composition, the shape and the polarity of the point, the applied voltage, the point-to-plane distance, and the imposed heat flux. Heat transfer coefficients are augmented up to 310% with respect to natural convection, a higher enhancement than the one obtained with traditional transformer oil. The electrohydrodynamic flow can be generated without significant power input (<0.01 W in these experiments). Cooling of power transformers can be greatly enhanced by this technique. In the present work, we investigate the effect of the electrical and gravitational force fields on weakly forced convection (Reynolds numbers range from 500 to 5600) in a square duct heated from the bottom side. On the top side, we placed an array of sharp point electrodes. Microgravity conditions were obtained during a parabolic flight campaign. At the application of a sufficiently-high DC electric field, a plume-like motion is induced in the fluid by the mechanism of ion injection and heat transfer is dramatically augmented. The working fluid is the dielectric liquid HFE-7100. Local temperatures on the heated wall were measured by liquid crystal thermography and by electrical resistance thermometers. By means of the temperature field, we were able to characterize the behaviour of the ionic jets and their interaction with the crossflow. We also investigated the effects of the Reynolds number, the gravity level, and the major electrical parameters on the average heat transfer coefficients. When no electric field is applied, heat transfer coefficients are influenced by the gravity level, particularly at the low flow rates. On the other hand, in the electrohydrodynamic regimes, heat transfer rates are not only enhanced, but also no longer gravity-dependent, showing that the resulting convection is dominated by the electric field intensity, conveniently controllable by the applied high voltage. Relatively small pressure drop increases caused by the induced flow were also measured. Profitable implementation of electrohydrodynamics in the design of compact heat exchangers and heat sinks such as cold plates is foreseen; possible benefits are pumping power reduction, size and weight reduction, and heat exchange capability augmentation. The application of a strong electric field within a dielectric medium can produce a jet-like motion of ionized liquid from a high-voltage electrode to a grounded heated plate. Ionic jet impingement on the upper surface of a horizontal plate where boiling is occurring significantly modifies the boiling curve. The effect of ion injection on saturated boiling heat transfer, specifically on boiling inception, nucleate boiling, and CHF, in a small-size sample with a single point-electrode configuration, has been experimentally investigated; the working fluid is FC-72. Significant heat transfer enhancement has been observed for the entire nucleate boiling curve. Besides, CHF has been delayed to higher heat fluxes (up to a 40% increase) by means of the impinging ionic jet. This active technique requires a negligible power input (in the order of a few milliwatts) for the ionic current. A focus on the influence of the electrical parameters on the phenomenon has been performed and preliminary results are presented. Laminar to weakly turbulent mixed convection in a square duct heated from the bottom side is highly strengthened by ionic jets generated by an array of high voltage points, op-posite to the heated strip. Distributions of the Nusselt number are obtained at different forced flow rates, applied heat flows, and transiting electrical currents. In correspondence of the point emitters, higher Nusselt numbers in the impingement areas are measured and an analogy with the thermo-fluid dynamic behavior of an array of submerged impinging jets in a crossflow is drawn. The diameter of the ionic jets is evaluated and an electrohydrody-namic Reynolds number is employed for correlation and similarity purposes. Energy transition is a fundamental process in the move towards sustainable development, but in industry, it is complicated by the remarkable sectoral heterogeneity. Fostering the realization of energy transition in the industrial sector requires the characterization of its energy dimension, in terms of energy mixes and end-uses as the determinants of transition pathways, and energy solutions and tools as the enablers of this transition paradigm. We observe that the suitability of tools for energy analysis depend on trade-offs between comprehensiveness, ease of use, robustness, and generalization ability. In this regard, we discuss the appropriateness of energy indicators and provide an overview of indicator typologies, methodological issues, and applications for energy performance evaluation and improvement. With reference to the dairy processing industry, selected as a representative industrial branch, we outline current and desirable energy benchmarking applications and exemplify the effectiveness of energy indicators in the quantification of the potential of energy solutions. The obtained results are promising and suggest that researchers should further explore the novel applications of energy indicators for energy performance improvement. Abstract: Colour can be expressed as a weighted combination of three attributes: hue, intensity, and saturation. Non-coherent light reflected by thermo-sensitive liquid crystals holds a variable hue, moving in a generally narrow temperature interval and also depending on its inclination with respect to the plane of the crystals and on the characteristics of the impinging light. In experimental practice it is not feasible to ensure uniform lighting over an extensive area and its entire view under the same angle. Thus, the acquired hue field is non-uniform even if the liquid crystal sheet is isothermal. However, by means of proper filtering and calibration of the colour attribute, this optical technique, besides being non-intrusive and inexpensive, is capable of mapping the temperature with an accuracy better than 5% of its measuring-range amplitude. A similar method can be applied for measuring the thickness of a thin liquid film. In this case, the colour attribute to be processed is its intensity. In fact, the light transmitted through a dyed liquid decreases with an increasing thickness of the layer. Again, a perfectly uniform light source is unattainable and the recorded intensity field is non-homogeneous even if the liquid free surface is flat. Nevertheless, the film thickness can be determined by this colour-processing procedure with an accuracy better than 8% of the measuring-range amplitude, which is dictated by the utilised dyestuff concentration. Further thermo-fluid dynamic measurements performed over extensive areas could be handled with analogous methodologies. The electric wind produced by corona discharge of a high-voltage electrode in air is employed for destabilizing a horizontal water film. In wire-to-plane geometry, the phenomenon is characterised by current versus voltage curves and visual observations of the onset of free-surface oscillations. The effect of the following parameters is examined for both positive and negative coronas: distance between the wire and the film (S), film thickness (h), wire diameter (ϕ) and composition, applied voltage (HV), and relative humidity (RH). The free-surface destabilisation is retarded by increasing d and ϕ and is insensitive to h in the tested range. The onset of corona discharge is predicted by Peek's law and compared with the experimentally observed threshold. In negative corona discharge, the current values are higher and the film is destabilised at lower HV than in positive Polarity. Humidity tends to decrease the corona current at a given HV. Correlations are proposed for the current-voltage curves, in terms of the mean electric field in the inter-electrode gap and of RH, satisfactorily agreeing with the experimental data. Both positive and negative corona currents turn out to be stable for days of operation. The power loss by corona discharge is in any case lower than 12 W. Wave induction on the liquid-gas interface can effectively enhance heat and mass exchange between the two phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The heat transfer characteristics of an electrohydrodynamically induced submerged impinging liquid flow are studied in a point-plane configuration. The working fluid, HFE-7100, is a weakly polar dielectric. Thermofluid-dynamic conditions as close as possible to the microgravity ones are obtained by heating a confined, downward-facing plate. With the present article, the authors summarize over 15 years of work dedicated to studying the effects of the electrical and the gravitational force fields on two-phase and single-phase thermofluid dynamics. Results obtained on several microgravity platforms are presented and the role played by the electric field in the different heat transfer processes is analyzed. In particular, the regimes of nucleate boiling and film boiling are treated. Also, the parameters controlling the liquid–vapor interface instability and the main consequences regarding the critical heat flux (CHF) are outlined. In the final section, the promising technique of ion injection for efficient heat transfer enhancement in single-phase liquids is described, together with the main results obtained under different flow regimes and geometries. The following dielectrics were compared: R113, Vertrel XF, and FC-72 for the pool boiling research; again FC-72 and HFE-7100 for the single-phase convection heat transfer experiments. Abstract: Upward flow of perfluorohexane (FC-72) in the entry zone of a uniformly heated circular duct was studied in a regime of transitional combined forced and free convection. Heat transfer coefficients were measured along the heated length at different values of flow rate and heat flux. Heat transfer impairment in the developing region due to laminarisation of the turbulent flow was observed and characterised by means of two well-known dimensionless groups: the Grätz number and the Grashof number based on the wall heat flux. The thermofluid-dynamic effects of ion injection from sharp metallic points added perpendicularly to the inner wire of a short horizontal annulus were experimentally investigated. A dielectric liquid (FC-72 by 3M) was weakly forced to flow in the duct, which was uniformly heated on the outer wall. A dc voltage as high as 22 kV was applied to the inner electrode, while the heated wall was grounded. Both the laminar and the turbulent mixed-convection regimes were obtained, varying the imposed flow rate. Once an electric field is applied, the flow is dramatically modified by the jets of charged particles, which transfer their momentum to the neutral adjacent ones. Different injection strengths were obtained on the emitters, because the shape of the point tips was not controlled at the microscale. Nusselt number distributions were obtained azimuthally and longitudinally, monitoring the wall temperatures. In all cases, heat transfer turned out greatly enhanced in the proximity of the emitters, without a significant increase in pressure drop through the test section and with a negligible Joule heating, making this technique very attractive for application in compact heat exchangers. Abstract: In the presence of a sharp HV electrode, free charge can build up in a single-phase liquid by ion injection at the metal/liquid interface. Electrophoretic forces acting on ions can generate strong convective motion, thus augmenting the heat transfer rate. In a vertical annular duct, uniformly heated on the outer wall, a dielectric liquid is weakly forced to flow upward. Sharp points are added perpendicularly to the inner cylinder and d.c. voltages as high as 22 kV are applied to it, while the outer wall is grounded. Prior to the application of the electric field, a regime of turbulent aided mixed convection is obtained. Being in a region of thermally developing flow, laminarization effects are observed, with local heat transfer coefficients depending non-trivially on longitudinal position, heat flux, and flow rate. With the electric field on, heat transfer turns out to be only weakly influenced by the heat flux and the flow rate. The heat exchange reveals to be highly enhanced by this technique and can be modulated by varying the applied voltage. Abstract: The preliminary experimental results of the effect of an electrostatic field on turbulent aided mixed convection in a short vertical annulus are reported herein. A dielectric liquid (FC-72 by 3M) is used as working fluid. The local heat transfer improvement is obtained by inserting appropriate points on the inner surface of the annulus, generally acting as the positive electrode, while the surrounding pipe is grounded. A high voltage (up to 22 kV) is established between the two surfaces. Heat pumps represent a link between different energy vectors and their application in thermal and electrical grids can improve the overall operational flexibility of the system. In this work, the optimal integration of electrically driven heat pumps within a hybrid distributed energy system is investigated. A multi-objective stochastic optimization methodology is proposed to evaluate the integrated optimal sizing and operation of the energy systems under uncertainties in climate, space occupancy, energy loads, and fuel costs. A case study is considered, namely a University campus, and two different configurations, with and without heat pumps, are compared. Both configurations include a cogeneration system, photovoltaic and solar thermal panels, and a wind turbine. The results show how the integration of heat pumps can reduce the operational cost of the system, increase the renewables share, provide a more robust design of the system, and moderate the risk of the investment. Indeed, the configuration with heat pumps entails a 50% higher expected value of the energy savings, a 28% increase of the renewable energy production, and higher energy savings in the worst-case scenario (13% vs. 5%). Polygeneration energy systems in building applications are widely recognized as an effective way to reduce primary energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to high energy efficiencies and optimal integration of different energy technologies and sources. In the present work, the integration of a reversible absorption heat pump and an internal combustion engine in a novel trigeneration system is proposed. The reversible absorption heat pump, which employs a water-ammonia mixture, is driven by the exhaust gas of the engine, and can produce heating and cooling, alternately. The proposed trigeneration system is presented, and the energy services provided under the heating and cooling operating modes are evaluated. A levelized cost of energy analysis is conducted to evaluate the economic viability of the proposed system. Next, a second-law analysis compares its overall exergy efficiency to those of conventional systems. Finally, the novel trigeneration system is implemented in a case study, namely a large office building located in Pisa, Italy. The integrated optimal sizing and operation are evaluated by using a genetic algorithm-based procedure. The findings show that the system integrating reversible absorption heat pump and cogeneration unit provides valuable economic and energy performance. The exergy efficiency of the system can reach 43%, and cost savings of around 5% and 10% are achieved compared to traditional cogeneration and separate-production system, respectively. Micro-district heating networks based on cogeneration plants and renewable energy technologies are considered efficient, viable and environmentally-friendly solutions to realizing smart multi-energy microgrids. Nonetheless, the energy production from renewable sources is intermittent and stochastic, and cogeneration units are characterized by fixed power-to-heat ratios, which are incompatible with fluctuating thermal and electric demands. These drawbacks can be partially overcome by smart operational controls that are capable of maximizing the energy system performance. Moreover, electrically driven heat pumps may add flexibility to the system, by shifting thermal loads into electric loads. In this paper, a novel configuration for smart multi-energy microgrids, which combines centralized and distributed energy units is proposed. A centralized cogeneration system, consisting of an internal combustion engine is connected to a micro-district heating network. Distributed electric heat pumps assist the thermal production at the building level, giving operational flexibility to the system and supporting the integration of renewable energy technologies, i.e., wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, and solar thermal collectors. The proposed configuration was tested in a hypothetical case study, namely, a University Campus located in Trieste, Italy. The system operation is based on a cost-optimal control strategy and the effect of the size of the cogeneration unit and heat pumps was investigated. A comparison with a conventional configuration, without distributed heat pumps, was also performed. The results show that the proposed configuration outperformed the conventional one, leading to a total-cost saving of around 8%, a carbon emission reduction of 11%, and a primary energy saving of 8%. The study presents a new procedure for identifying possible risks for books kept in historic libraries. It is addressed to all those historic libraries where large collections of old and rare books are stored and preserved. These libraries were rarely used by people, but, nowadays, many of them have become touristic attractions. Consequently, their indoor microclimate may have changed, possibly leading to risks for books conservation. The proposed methodology is based on an intensive monitoring campaign, followed by an in-depth data analysis. Handy indices are also proposed to guide the researchers in the identification of possible risks. Problems related to too-high daily or spatial hygrothermal variations or problems related to specific risks (e.g., biological or chemical risks) can be identified. If a problem is observed, the identification of the most suitable solutions is more straightforward. The application of the proposed procedure to a real case study (the Baroque Library of the University of Coimbra, Portugal) has highlighted its handiness. A 6-month monitoring campaign and its consequent data analysis has pointed out potentially risky situations. Thus, measures should be taken to avoid books damage. • Replacement of thermal generator is a simple and efficient building retrofit action. • Three generators are compared using environmental, energy and economic metrics. • A building stock energy model for Italy has been defined (4 buildings, 3 climates). • Heat pumps are preferrable for emission reduction, but lead to high operative costs. • The flexibility of hybrid heat pump allows for high savings on all the objectives. In many countries, old inefficient generators are used for heating purposes. A way to improve energy efficiency in those countries can be the choice of the most suitable heating generators to replace the current ones, without the inconveniences caused by other retrofit measures. In this context, we present a methodology to choose the most appropriate generator through dynamic simulations applied to building stock energy models. Economic, energetic, and environmental parameters guide the choice. The methodology is applied in the Italian residential building scenario, where the most widespread heating device is traditional boiler. Three options are considered: condensing boiler, heat pump, and hybrid heat pump (an alternative-working system with a condensing boiler and heat pump). For a detailed analysis, a white-box bottom-up building stock energy model is defined, through a statistical analysis, consisting of four building typologies in three different external climates. An hourly dynamic building-system simulation has been performed to obtain energy performance, emissions, and operational costs. The results have demonstrated that condensing boiler allows limited economic, environmental, and energy savings (8 - 14 %), compared to traditional boiler. The highest economic savings are obtained with the hybrid heat pump (20 %), while the heat pump alone leads to higher costs, but the highest savings in emissions and non-renewable primary energy (25 - 50 %). The flexibility offered by the hybrid heat pump allows to obtain high savings in different cost scenarios, but also to further reduce CO 2 emissions by implementing an environmental-based control strategy. Energy performance improvement in manufacturing is hindered by the lack of information on energy use in production and by the predominant economic vision in the assessment of energy interventions. This paper proposes a framework that integrates energy performance mapping with energy systems optimization. The framework introduces a new dimension to energy performance mapping by tracing energy use along processing and energy conversion steps and revisits multi-criteria assessments by assigning penalties to the energy performance gap with best practice. The suitability of food manufacturing for the application of the framework is exemplified from both a top-down and bottom-up perspective. More than 80% reductions in purchased energy carriers and non-renewable energy sources are achieved in a representative process through interventions coupling sector-specific manufacturing knowledge and energy expertise. With regard to one of the interventions, the introduction of the penalty is shown to shift the optimal solution, yielding more than 25% reductions in energy consumption compared to a purely economic assessment. The proposed framework can help industrial stakeholders identify improvement opportunities and develop more sustainable energy systems in manufacturing. Radiant floor heating systems have become a reference technology, but their use for cooling purposes has proven inconvenient in many applications due to their reduced cooling capacity and condensation issues. Nonetheless, potentialities and drawbacks of radiant floor cooling systems have been frequently addressed and simulated, given the large potential advantages of employing a single emissive system for all seasons. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the modeling methods for radiant floor cooling systems proposed in scientific papers and also used in simulation software and technical standards. Models are classified according to their characterizing features, and the distinctive contributions of each method are discussed. Additionally, the modeling of the most relevant phenomena affecting floor performance is further discussed. The review revealed the presence of two main modeling classes, one only focusing on the floor's conductive heat transfer and the other integrating active floor analysis within the building's energy model of the thermal zone. Despite the presence of many modeling methods that are able to consider the most important effects in the radiant cooling system operation, not all the phenomena present in a practical application are fully described. In museums, hygrothermal conditions must be carefully controlled by HVAC system to avoid artwork degradation. Higher energy requirements are needed for the maintenance of the suitable thermal environment. Moreover, a comfortable thermal sensation is needed for a positive museum experience. In light of current policies on energy efficiency, we propose an original procedure for the concurrent achievement of three goals: artwork preservation, energy efficiency, and human thermal comfort. This procedure is based on the application of multi-objective optimization and aims at correctly choosing temperature and relative humidity setpoints, through the use of dynamic simulations and evaluation of three indexes as objectives. This strategy can be particularly effective in museums hosted in historic buildings, where envelope and HVAC refurbishment is often forbidden or discouraged due to the architectural constraints. Furthermore, the retrofit action is almost costless. A case study is presented: first, a monitoring campaign in an Italian museum has been used for the validation of dynamic simulation models of the building-HVAC system; then, the validated models have been used to show that improvements of artwork lifetime, human thermal comfort and reduction of energy requirements of the HVAC system are possible, if currently-used hygrothermal setpoints (based on technical standards and guidelines) are replaced with those identified by the optimization problem. Flow of perfluorohexane in the entry region of a uniformly heated horizontal cylindrical duct was studied in a regime of weakly turbulent mixed convection. Heat transfer coefficients were measured at five cross sections along the heated length and various values of flow rate and heat flux were imposed. A different thermofluid-dynamic behavior was observed between the upper and lower sides of the pipe. The paper analyzes and compares the perspectives for reducing the energy consumption associated to the operation of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning system for climatic control of large-size non-residential buildings. Three different control strategies are considered comparing the use of boiler and heat pumps as heating systems and analyzing the use of demand-controlled ventilation, operating on the effective occupancy of the building. The control strategies are applied to two different educational buildings with shapes representative of typical educational structures. The results of the analysis show how the energy consumption can be reduced up to 70%, shifting from the actual values of the energy intensity of over 300 kWh/m2 for year to values of less than 100 kWh/m2 per year. The significance of the energy savings achieved in such different buildings has led to the identification of a possible benchmark for HVAC systems in the next future years which could help reach the environmental targets in this sector. One of the main elements for increasing energy efficiency in large-scale buildings is identified in the correct management and control of the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, particularly those with Heat Pumps (HPs). The present study aimed to evaluate the perspective of energy savings achievable with the implementation of an optimal control of the HVAC with HPs. The proposed measures involve the use of a variable air volume system, demand-controlled ventilation, an energy-aware control of the heat recovery equipment, and an improved control of the heat pump and chiller supply water temperature. The analysis has been applied to an academic building located in Pisa and is carried out by means of dynamic simulation. The achieved energy saving can approach values of more than 80% if compared with actual plants based on fossil fuel technologies. A major part of this energy saving is linked to the use of heat pumps as thermal generators as well as to the implementation of an energy efficient ventilation, emphasizing the importance of such straightforward measures in reducing the energy intensity of large-scale buildings. Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) are increasingly recognised as potential tools for promoting the adoption of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). However, their success depends on the energy flexibility of participants – that is, their willingness to adjust habits to better align with energy production and loads. This study aims to provide insights into whether participation in a REC can enhance users' flexibility compared to individual prosumers. Our analysis is grounded in an experiment conducted with 192 young adults, using a web-based serious game developed specifically for this study. The results of a logit regression analysis suggest that the sense of belonging to a REC increases flexibility when combined with peer pressure. Control variables such as environmental or ethical concern are also found to influence energy flexibility. This paper analyzes the use of hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) collectors in nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEBs). We present a design methodology based on the dynamic simulation of the whole energy system, which includes the building energy demand, a reversible heat pump as generator, the thermal storage, the power exchange with the grid, and both thermal and electrical energy production by solar collectors. An exhaustive search of the best equipment sizing and design is performed to minimize both the total costs and the non-renewable primary energy consumption over the system lifetime. The results show that photovoltaic/thermal technology reduces the non-renewable primary energy consumption below the nearly zero-energy threshold value, assumed as 15 kWh/(m2·yr), also reducing the total costs with respect to a non-solar solution (up to 8%). As expected, several possible optimal designs exist, with an opposite trend between energy savings and total costs. In all these optimal configurations, we figure out that photovoltaic/thermal technology favors the production of electrical energy with respect to the thermal one, which mainly occurs during the summer to meet the domestic hot water requirements and lower the temperature of the collectors. Finally, we show that, for a given solar area, photovoltaic/thermal technology leads to a higher reduction of the non-renewable primary energy and to a higher production of solar thermal energy with respect to a traditional separate production employing photovoltaic (PV) modules and solar thermal (ST) collectors. Cogeneration systems are widely acknowledged as a viable solution to reduce energy consumption and costs, and CO2 emissions. Nonetheless, their performance is highly dependent on their capacity and operational strategy, and optimization methods are required to fully exploit their potential. Among the available technical possibilities to maximize their performance, the integration of thermal energy storage is recognized as one of the most effective solutions. The introduction of a storage device further complicates the identification of the optimal equipment capacity and operation. This work presents a cutting-edge methodology for the optimal design and operation of cogeneration systems with thermal energy storage. A two-level algorithm is proposed to reap the benefits of the mixed integer linear programming formulation for the optimal operation problem, while overcoming its main drawbacks by means of a genetic algorithm at the design level. Part-load effects on nominal efficiency, variation of the unitary cost of the components in relation to their size, and the effect of the storage volume on its thermal losses are considered. Moreover, a novel formulation of the optimization problem is proposed to better characterize the heat losses and operation of the thermal energy storage. A rolling-horizon technique is implemented to reduce the computational time required for the optimization, without affecting the quality of the results. Furthermore, the proposed methodology is adopted to design a cogeneration system for a secondary school in San Francisco, California, which is optimized in terms of the equivalent annual cost. The results show that the optimally sized cogeneration unit directly meets around 70% of both the electric and thermal demands, while the thermal energy storage additionally covers 16% of the heat demands. The scientific literature lacks methodologies for assessing HRES investments because of complex interactions among HRES components, conflicting objectives, and uncertainty in the energy demand. This work fills this gap by presenting a methodology to assess long-term investments in HRES for off-grid buildings. To strengthen the reliability of the assessment, the methodology exploits an HRES optimal synthesis, sizing and operation simulating the system and embodying the interactions among HRES components for both electrical and heat generation, the building loads evaluation, and the verification of the effect of uncertainties in the energy demand. These aspects have already been investigated, but, to our best knowledge, have never been considered in a concurrent and integrated way. The resulting designs are optimised through an NSGA-II algorithm that minimises the system CO 2 emissions and differential cost with respect to a solution that does not use renewable energy sources. The soundness of the solutions is evaluated through a scenario analysis and a sensitivity analysis using the Morris method. The applicability of the proposal was verified through a case study in an off-grid facility, showing possible savings up to 47 k€ and 320 t CO 2. The paper provides a methodology for the optimal control of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems used in public buildings, with the purpose of obtaining high comfort and safety standards along with energy efficiency. The combination of the two concurrent objectives of minimizing energy use and guaranteeing high standards of occupant comfort is obtained by means of multi-objective optimization, in which a comfort model is combined along with a dynamic energy model of the building. The use of dynamic setpoints for the HVAC and the inclusion of comfort indicators represent a step forward, compared to the current design and operation procedures suggested by technical standards. The utilization of the proposed methodology is tested with reference to a case study, represented by an academic building used by the University of Pisa for educational purposes, whose extensive and variable occupancy can help to emphasize the importance of comfort in the operation of HVAC systems in different climatic conditions and with different occupancy profiles. We show how this optimization brings interesting results in terms of energy-saving (up to 30%), obtaining an increased comfort level (of more than 25%) compared to the operating conditions suggested by technical standards. Space cooling is currently the fastest-growing end-user in buildings. The global warming trend combined with increased population and economic development will lead to accelerated growth in space cooling in the future, especially in China. The hot summer and cold winter (HSCW) zone is the most densely populated and economically developed region in China, but with the worst indoor thermal environment. Relatively few studies have been conducted on the actual measurements in the optimization of insulation design under typical intermittent cooling modes in this region. This case study was conducted in Chengdu—the two residences selected were identical in design, but the south bedroom of the case study residence had interior insulation (inside insulation on all opaque interior surfaces of a space) retrofitted in the bedroom area in 2017. In August 2019, a comparative on-site measurement was done to investigate the effect of the retrofit work under three typical intermittent cooling patterns in the real-life scenario. The experimental result shows that interior insulation provides a significant improvement in energy-saving and the indoor thermal environment. The average energy savings in daily cooling energy consumption of the south bedroom is 42.09%, with the maximum reaching 48.91%. In the bedroom with interior insulation retrofit, the indoor temperature is closer to the set temperature and the vertical temperature difference is smaller during the cooling period; when the air conditioner is off, the room remains a comfortable temperature for a slightly longer time. A modelling approach based on the Substitutive Coefficients Network (SCN) is developed to predict the thermal behavior of a system in the dynamic state-space, without requiring knowledge of the thermal mass. The method can apply either to large- (building, combined solar systems, geothermal energy, and thermodynamic installations) or to small-scale systems (heat exchangers, electronic devices cooling systems, and Li-ion batteries). This current method is based on a dimensionless formulation of the simplified dynamic thermal balance model, using relaxation time as a key parameter to establish the model. The introduction of relaxation time reduces the parameters set as guidance coefficients. The parameters are finally expressed by a combination of global heat transfer coefficients related to each layer and/or sub-layer of the system. Advantages of the method are reliability, "non-destructibility", i.e., it allows a reliable prediction of the thermal behavior which experimentally is inaccessible, and reducibility of the parameters size estimate. Additionally, the method is inexpensive in terms of computation memory. It is also easy to implement in practical numerical schemes. In this paper, the method leads to a simplified mathematical model that predicts the thermal behavior of a mono-zone eco-cottage building installed at Lorraine University (in Longwy, France) as a case study. Thermal performance of the building is estimated under the hourly weather conditions onsite, as obtained from the Meteonorm software. The thermal dynamics within hourly Typical Meteorological Year 2 (TMY2) Meteonorm data disturbances and the internal heating input state in the winter period were simulated with a simplified numerical discretization method. Worldwide increasing awareness of energy sustainability issues has been the main driver in developing the concepts of (Nearly) Zero Energy Buildings, where the reduced energy consumptions are (nearly) fully covered by power locally generated by renewable sources. At the same time, recent advances in Internet of Things technologies are among the main enablers of Smart Homes and Buildings. The transition of conventional buildings into active environments that process, elaborate and react to online measured environmental quantities is being accelerated by the aspects related to COVID-19, most notably in terms of air exchange and the monitoring of the density of occupants. In this paper, we address the problem of maximizing the energy efficiency and comfort perceived by occupants, defined in terms of thermal comfort, visual comfort and air quality. Estimating and optimizing the dynamic performance of a heat pump system coupled to a building is a paramount yet complex task, especially under intermittent conditions. This paper presents the "hardware-in-the-loop" experimental campaign of an air-source heat pump serving a typical dwelling in Pisa (Italy). The experimental apparatus uses real pieces of equipment, together with a thermal load emulator controlled by a full energy dynamic simulation of the considered building. Real weather data are continuously collected and used to run the simulation. The experimental campaign was performed from November 2019 to February 2020, measuring the system performances under real climate and load dynamics. With a water set point equal to 40 °C, the average heat pump coefficient of performance was about 3, while the overall building-plant performance was around 2. The deviation between the two performance indexes can be ascribed to the continuous on-off signals given by the zone thermostat due to the oversized capacity of the heat emission system. The overall performance raised to 2.5 thanks to a smoother operation obtained with reduced supply temperature (35 °C) and fan coil speed. The paper demonstrates the relevance of a dynamic analysis of the building-HVAC system and the potential of the "hardware-in-the-loop" approach in assessing actual part-load heat pump performances with respect to the standard stationary methodology. This work presents an optimization strategy and the cost-optimal design of an off-grid building served by an energy system involving solar technologies, thermal and electrochemical storages. Independently from the multi-objective method (e.g., utility function) and algorithm used (e.g., genetic algorithms), the optimization of this kind of systems is typically characterized by a high-dimensional variables space, computational effort and results uncertainty (e.g., local minimum solutions). Instead of focusing on advanced optimization tools to handle the design problem, the dimension of the full problem has been reduced, only considering the design variables with a high "effect" on the objective functions. An off-grid accommodation building is presented as test case: the original six-variable design problem consisting of about 300,000 possible configurations is reduced to a two-variable problem, after the analysis of 870 Monte Carlo simulations. The new problem includes only 220 possible design alternatives with a clear benefit for the multi-objective optimization algorithm. The energy-economy Pareto frontiers obtained by the original and the reduced problems overlap, showing the validity of the proposed methodology. The No-RES (no renewable energy sources) primary energy consumption can be reduced up to almost 0 kWh/(m2yr) and the net present value (NPV) after 20 years can reach 70 k€ depending on the number of photovoltaic panels and electrochemical storage size. The reduction of the problem also allows for a plain analysis of the results and the drawing of handy decision charts to help the investor/designer in finding the best design according to the specific investment availability and target performances. The configurations on the Pareto frontier are characterized by a notable electrical overproduction and a ratio between the two main design variables that goes from 4 to 8 h.
