Transition-metal Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) is a developing technique that probes the occupied molecular orbitals of a metal complex. As an element-specific probe of metal centers, Kβ XES is finding increasing applications in catalytic and, in particular, bioinorganic systems. For the continued development of XES as a probe of these complex systems, however, the full range of factors which contribute to XES spectral modulations must be explored. In this report, an investigation of a series of oxo-bridged iron dimers reveals that the intensity of valence-to-core features is sensitive to the Fe-O-Fe bond angle. The intensity of these features has a well-known dependence on metal-ligand bond distance, but a dependence upon bond angle has not previously been documented. Herein, we explore the angular dependence of valence-to-core XES features both experimentally and computationally. Taken together, these results show that, as the Fe-O-Fe angle decreases, the intensity of the Kβ" feature increases and that this effect is modulated by increasing amounts of Fe np mixing into the O 2s orbital at smaller bond angles. The relevance of these findings to the identification of oxygenated intermediates in bioinorganic systems is highlighted, with special emphasis given to the case of soluble methane monooxygenase. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) can provide detailed insight into the electronic and geometric structures of transition-metal active sites in metalloproteins and chemical catalysts. However, standard XAS spectra inherently represent an average contribution from the entire coordination environment with limited ligand selectivity. To address this limitation, we have investigated the enhancement of XAS features using valence-to-core (VtC)-detected XAS, whereby XAS spectra are measured by monitoring fluorescence from valence-to-core X-ray emission (VtC XES) events. VtC emission corresponds to transitions from filled ligand orbitals to the metal 1s core hole, with distinct energetic shifts for ligands of differing ionization potentials. VtC-detected XAS data were obtained from multiple valence emission features for a series of well-characterized Mn model compounds; taken together, these data correspond to a VtC resonant XES (VtC RXES) plane. For comparison, standard total fluorescence yield (TFY) XAS and nonresonant XES data were obtained. Dramatic intensity variations and the appearance of new features were observed in the pre-edge region by detecting at different VtC emission energies. The TFY XAS, nonresonant XES, and VtC RXES data were all modeled within a density functional theory approach. While the TFY XAS and nonresonant XES data are readily interpreted by theory, the VtC RXES cannot be reproduced within such a simplified model. Nonetheless, dramatic changes in the experimental spectra are observed that have the potential to further the information content and selectivity of XAS. The mainline feature in metal Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) has long been recognized as an experimental marker for the spin state of the metal center. However, even within a series of metal compounds with the same nominal oxidation and spin state, significant changes are observed that cannot be explained on the basis of overall spin. In this work, the origin of these effects is explored, both experimentally and theoretically, in order to develop the chemical information content of Kβ mainline XES. Ligand field expressions are derived that describe the behavior of Kβ mainlines for first row transition metals with any d" count, allowing for a detailed analysis of the factors governing mainline shape. Further, due to limitations associated with existing computational approaches, we have developed a new methodology for calculating Kβ mainlines using restricted active space configuration interaction (RAS-CI) calculations. This approach eliminates the need for empirical parameters and provides a powerful tool for investigating the effects that chemical environment exerts on the mainline spectra. Ligand K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to study dimeric and tetrameric Cl-terminated Fe-S clusters with variable numbers of S2- substituted by NtBu2- (NtBu2- = tertbutylimido) ligands to gain insights into the functional role of the interstitial light atom in the iron-molybdenum cofactor (FeMoco) of nitrogenase. These studies are complemented by time-dependent density functional theory analysis to quantify the relative effects on Fe-S and Fe-Cl bonding. The results show that NtBu2- substitution dramatically affects the electronic structure of dimeric clusters, while the impact on tetrameric clusters is small. Strong agreement between experiment and theory merited extension of this analysis to hypothetical clusters with S2- substituted by N and C-atom donor ligands as well as FeMoco itself. These results show that very strong electron donors are required to appreciably modulate the electronic structure of tetrameric (or larger) iron sulfur clusters, pointing to a possible role of the central C4- in FeMoco. This work establishes the ability of valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to serve as a direct probe of N2 bond activation. A systematic series of iron-N2 complexes has been experimentally investigated and the energy of a valence-to-core XES peak was correlated with N–N bond length and stretching frequency. Computations demonstrate that, in a simple one-electron picture, this peak arises from the N2 2s2s σ* orbital, which becomes less antibonding as the N–N bond is weakened and broken. Changes as small as 0.02 Å in the N–N bond length may be distinguished using this approach. The results thus establish valence-to-core XES as an effective probe of small molecule activation, which should have broad applicability in transition-metal mediated catalysis. The sensitivity of iron Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to the nature of the bound ligands (σ-donating, π-rdonating, and π-accepting) has been explored. A combination of experiment and theory has been employed, with a DFT approach being utilized to elucidate ligand effects on the spectra and to assign the spectral intensity mechanisms. Knowledge of the various contributions to the spectra allows for a deeper understanding of spectral features and demonstrates the sensitivity of this method to the identity of the interacting ligands. The southern North Sea holds the world's highest concentration of offshore wind farms (OWFs). Northern gannets (Morus bassanus), a species considered at high risk from OWF impacts, show a strong seasonal peak there in November, but it is unclear which populations and age classes are most at risk of collision with wind turbines. We tagged adult and juvenile gannets at the world's largest colony (Bass Rock) and reviewed two sources of survey data for different age classes to study their movements through southern North Sea waters. Tracked birds showed peak numbers in the southern North Sea in mid-October, with much smaller numbers there during November. Adults were distributed throughout the area, including waters close to OWFs, whereas juveniles were confined to the coast. Survey data indicated high proportions of immature gannets in southern North Sea waters, suggesting higher collision risk than for adults. Gannets present in November may be predominantly from colonies further north than Bass Rock. • Offshore wind farms in the southern North Sea pose a threat for migrating gannets. • Environmental impact assessments need data on ages and populations at risk. • We provide insights through combining tracking and survey data. • Adults are more at risk than juveniles, whose migration paths are more coastal. • Gannets seen later in the year are likely migrating from colonies further north. In this paper, the response to temperature of three physiological processes has been examined in detail in seedlings of sorghum and pearl millet. These have been compared with their field performance under high temperature conditions with the aim of developing laboratory-based screening techniques for seedling thermotolerance. Membrane thermostability, as assessed by electrolyte leakage, seedling re-growth and protein synthetic ability were measured in seedlings exposed to a range of temperatures using a thermal gradient bar, The effect of genotype, seedling age and pre-treatment was examined. Differences between genotypes were only apparent after seedlings had been given a brief high temperature pre-treatment (2 h at 43 °C). Similar results were found with all three methods used and their suitability for use in the screening of large numbers of entries is discussed. Photoassimilate produced by mature leaves is usually loaded into the phloem as sucrose. Transport of sucrose from the mesophyll cells to the phloem might involve an apoplastic step or be entirely symplastic, depending on species. Acid invertase occurs as both soluble and cell-wall-bound forms and has been detected in mature leaves. However, the ability of this enzyme to act as a regulator of carbon export and storage depends on whether it occurs either in the sucrose transport path (which could decrease export), or is located within the mesophyll cells (potentially resulting in intracellular futile cycling between sucrose synthesis in the cytoplasm and hydrolysis in the vacuole). Tissue-level localization of acid invertase was investigated by tissue printing, which establishes protein distribution within a leaf. Antiserum was raised against a synthetic peptide corresponding to a region close to the active site of acid invertase. Tissue prints from Pisum sativum L. and Hordeum vulgare L. showed invertase to be located in the vascular regions, which was not observed in Fuchsia hybrida L. This corresponds to differences in the presence of oligosaccharides in leaf extracts and in the pattern of plasmodesmatal connections between mesophyll cells and the vasculature. Vegetative plants of Lolium temulentum L, grown at 20°C with an 8 h photoperiod were transferred to either 5 or 2°C (8 h photoperiod) at 4th leaf maturity. Measurement of dry weight gain indicated a marked decline in relative growth rate below 5°C, with growth being reduced as much between 5 and 2°C as between 20 and 5°C. This reduction was not associated with increased mortality and was reversible if plants were returned to 20°C. Tissue explants from cold‐treated plants retained the ability to extend if returned to 20°C Rates of extension in explants were less temperature sensitive than the relative growth rates observed in intact plants. Measurements of photosynthetic capacity, and of the patterns of accumulation of reserve carbohydrate in plants exposed to different temperatures, suggested that the inhibition of growth caused by chilling is not caused by an inability of the plants to fix sufficient carbon. X-ray spectroscopy is a valuable technique for the study of many materials systems. Characterizing reactions in situ and operando can reveal complex reaction kinetics, which is crucial to understanding active site composition and reaction mechanisms. In this project, the design, fabrication and testing of an open-source and easy-to-fabricate electrochemical cell for in situ electrochemistry compatible with X-ray absorption spectroscopy in both transmission and fluorescence modes are accomplished via windows with large opening angles on both the upstream and downstream sides of the cell. Using a hobbyist computer numerical control machine and free 3D CAD software, anyone can make a reliable electrochemical cell using this design. Onion-like carbon nanoparticles, with a 1:3 iron-to-cobalt ratio, were drop-coated onto carbon paper for testing in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry of the carbon paper showed the expected behavior, with no increased ohmic drop, even in sandwiched cells. Chronoamperometry was used to apply 0.4 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, with and without 15 min of oxygen purging to ensure that the electrochemical cell does not provide any artefacts due to gas purging. The XANES and EXAFS spectra showed no differences with and without oxygen, as expected at 0.4 V, without any artefacts due to gas purging. The development of this open-source electrochemical cell design allows for improved collection of in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy data and enables researchers to perform both transmission and fluorescence simultaneously. Recent reviews on sexual dichromatism in frogs included Mannophryne trinitatis as the only example they could find of dynamic dichromatism (males turn black when calling) within the family Aromobatidae and found no example of ontogenetic dichromatism in this group. We demonstrate ontogenetic dichromatism in M. trinitatis by rearing post-metamorphic froglets to near maturity: the throats of all individuals started as grey coloured; at around seven weeks, the throat became pale yellow in some, and more strongly yellow as development proceeded; the throats of adults are grey in males and variably bright yellow in females, backed by a dark collar. We demonstrated the degree of throat colour variability by analysing a large sample of females. The red: green (R:G) ratio ranged from ~1.1 to 1.4, reflecting variation from yellow to yellow/orange, and there was also variation in the tone and width of the dark collar, and in the extent to which the yellow colouration occurred posterior to the collar. Female M. trinitatis are known to be territorial in behaviour. We show a positive relationship between throat colour (R:G ratio) and escape performance, as a proxy for quality. Our field observations on Tobago's M. olmonae showed variability in female throat colour and confirmed that males in this species also turn black when calling. Our literature review of the 20 Mannophryne species so far named showed that all females have yellow throats with dark collars, and that male colour change to black when calling has been reported in eight species; in the remaining 12 species, descriptions of males calling are usually lacking so far. We predict that both dynamic and ontogenetic sexual dichromatism are universal in this genus and provide discussion of the ecological role of dichromatism in this genus of predominantly diurnal, non-toxic frogs, with strong paternal care of offspring. Overcoming slow kinetics and high overpotential in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) requires innovative catalysts and approaches that transcend the scaling relationship between binding energies for intermediates and catalyst surfaces. Inorganic complexes provide unique, customizable geometries, which can help enhance their efficiencies. However, they are unstable and susceptible to chemical reaction under extreme pH conditions. Immobilizing complexes on substrates creates single‐molecule catalysts (SMCs) with functional similarities to single‐atom catalysts (SACs). Here, an efficient SMC, composed of dichloro(1,3‐bis(diphenylphosphino)propane) nickel [NiCl2dppp] anchored to a graphene acid (GA), is presented. This SMC surpasses ruthenium‐based OER benchmarks, exhibiting an ultra‐low onset and overpotential at 10 mAcm−2 when exposed to a static magnetic field. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses imply that an interfacial charge transfer from the Ni center in NiCl2dppp to GA enhances the OER activity. Spectroscopic investigations reveal an in situ geometrical transformation of the complex and the formation of a paramagnetic Ni center, which under a magnetic field, enables spin‐selective electron transfer, resulting in enhanced OER performance. The results highlight the significance of in situ geometric transformations in SMCs and underline the potential of an external magnetic field to enhance OER performance at a single‐molecule level. The article provides information on a study focused on lithium-sulfur batteries, exploring the electrocatalytic mechanisms using a cobalt single-atom electrocatalyst through operando confocal Raman microscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The study reveals that Co-SAs/NC effectively accelerates lithium-sulfur reduction/oxidation reactions and transforms the stepwise mechanism of long-chain and intermediate-chain polysulfides into a concurrent pathway under electrocatalysis.

The synthesis and reactivity of a series of mononuclear nonheme iron complexes that carry out intramolecular aromatic C-F hydroxylation reactions is reported. The key intermediate prior to C-F hydroxylation, [FeIV(O)(...)](BF4)2 (1-O, Ar1 = -2,6-difluorophenyl), was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure revealed a nonbonding C-H⋯O=Fe interaction with a CH3CN molecule. Variable-field Mössbauer spectroscopy of 1-O indicates an intermediate-spin (S = 1) ground state. The Mössbauer parameters for 1-O include an unusually small quadrupole splitting for a triplet FeIV(O) and are reproduced well by density functional theory calculations. With the aim of investigating the initial step for C-F hydroxylation, two new ligands were synthesized, ... (L2, Ar2 = -2,6-difluoro-4-methoxyphenyl) and ... (L3, Ar3 = -2,6-difluoro-3-methoxyphenyl), with -OMe substituents in the meta or ortho/para positions with respect to the C-F bonds. FeII complexes [Fe(...)(CH3CN)](ClO4)2 (2) and [Fe(...)(CH3CN)](ClO4)2 (3) reacted with isopropyl 2-iodoxybenzoate to give the C-F hydroxylated FeIII-OAr products. The FeIV(O) intermediates 2-O and 3-O were trapped at low temperature and characterized. Complex 2-O displayed a C-F hydroxylation rate similar to that of 1-O. In contrast, the kinetics (via stopped-flow UV-vis) for complex 3-O displayed a significant rate enhancement for C-F hydroxylation. Eyring analysis revealed the activation barriers for the C-F hydroxylation reaction for the three complexes, consistent with the observed difference in reactivity. A terminal FeII(OH) complex (4) was prepared independently to investigate the possibility of a nucleophilic aromatic substitution pathway, but the stability of 4 rules out this mechanism. The bioinorganic chemistry community has had a long history of utilizing a diverse range of spectroscopic techniques to obtain detailed geometric and electronic structural insights into metalloprotein active sites. In recent years, the development of beamlines optimized for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy has provided novel tools for the elucidation of biological active site structures. These methods include both non-resonant and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy. Herein, we briefly introduce both X-ray absorption and X-ray emission spectroscopy, and the added information that can be obtained through high-resolution measurements. The information content of each spectroscopic approach, as well as the required instrumentation, is discussed. Applications of these methods in bioinorganic chemistry are highlighted. To robustly predict the effects of disturbance and ecosystem changes on species, it is necessary to produce structurally realistic models with high predictive power and flexibility. To ensure that these models reflect the natural conditions necessary for reliable prediction, models must be informed and tested using relevant empirical observations. Pattern‐oriented modelling (POM) offers a systematic framework for employing empirical patterns throughout the modelling process and has been coupled with complex systems modelling, such as in agent‐based models (ABMs). However, while the production of ABMs has been rising rapidly, the explicit use of POM has not increased. Challenges with identifying patterns and an absence of specific guidelines on how to implement empirical observations may limit the accessibility of POM and lead to the production of models which lack a systematic consideration of reality. This review serves to provide guidance on how to identify and apply patterns following a POM approach in ABMs (POM‐ABMs), specifically addressing: where in the ecological hierarchy can we find patterns; what kinds of patterns are useful; how should simulations and observations be compared; and when in the modelling cycle are patterns used? The guidance and examples provided herein are intended to encourage the application of POM and inspire efficient identification and implementation of patterns for both new and experienced modellers alike. Additionally, by generalising patterns found especially useful for POM‐ABM development, these guidelines provide practical help for the identification of data gaps and guide the collection of observations useful for the development and verification of predictive models. Improving the accessibility and explicitness of POM could facilitate the production of robust and structurally realistic models in the ecological community, contributing to the advancement of predictive ecology at large. Leaf sucrose, starch, hexose and maximum extractable soluble acid invertase activity were compared throughout the day in source leaves of 13 plant species chosen for their putative phloem-loading type (apoplastic or symplastic). Four species which represent the different phloem-loading types (tomato, barley, maize and Fuchsia) were studied in detail. Using this information we wished to determine whether a positive correlation between foliar carbohydrates and acid invertase activity exists in leaves from different species and, furthermore, whether this relationship is determined by phloem-loading type. Acid invertase activity was relatively constant throughout the day in all species. The extent of sucrose, hexose and starch accumulation and the sucrose: starch ratio measured at a given time were species-dependent. No correlations were found between foliar soluble acid invertase activity and the hexose, sucrose or starch content of the leaves in any of the species, regardless of phloem-loading type. The species examined could be divided into three distinct groups: (1) high sucrose, low invertase; (2) low sucrose, low invertase; and (3) low sucrose, high invertase. The absence of an inverse relationship between leaf sucrose, hexose or starch contents and endogenous soluble acid invertase suggests that this enzyme is not directly involved in carbon partitioning in leaves but serves an auxiliary function. A soluble acid invertase was extracted by mechanical disruption of mycelium of the psychrophile Monographella nivalis grown on sucrose in submerged culture. The crude preparation was stable to incubation at pH 6.2 for 1 h at temperatures up to 47 °C and was stable to handling at room temperature. Half of the initial activity was lost after 1 h at 52 °C and all activity was lost after 1 h at 57 °C. A single isoform with activity against sucrose was detected on both native PAGE and IEF activity gels, exhibiting an isoelectric point of pH 3.6. The activity bound tightly to Concanavalin A-sepharose and was not displaced by 500 mM α-methyl mannopyranosidase indicating the enzyme to be a mannose-containing glycoprotein. By gel filtration, the apparent Mr was determined at 195 kDa. The invertase was purified 106-fold by salt precipitation. The partially purified enzyme exhibited maximal activity at pH 4.2 and apparent Michaelis constants for sucrose of 1.2, 2.0 and 2.6 mM at 3, 9 and 15 °C. The activity increased exponentially with temperature in the range 7-55 °C. Q10 fell with increased temperature giving values of 1.96 between 5 and 15 °C and 1.60 between 40 and 50°C. Maximal activity was recorded at 55 °C. Arrhenius analysis of temperature data in the range 7-52 °C produced a continuous linear relationship. The activation energy for sucrose hydrolysis was 38.8 kJ mol-1. The thermal stability and thermal kinetic properties of the invertase were similar to those of invertases from mesophilic organisms. The invertase catalysed fructosyl transfer at 13% of the molar activity against sucrose when assayed under conditions analogous to those in culture. The major fructan products were neokestose, isokestose, kestose and an unidentified tetrasaccharide. Traces of larger fructans were also detected. The transient accumulation of fructan in cultures of M. nivalis can be explained as a side reaction of invertase activity. An asporogenous strain of the pink snow mould fungus, Monographella nivalis (Schaffnit) E. Müller, anamorph Gerlachia nivalis Ces. ex Sac.) W. Gams & E. Müller (Syn. Fusarium nivale Ces. ex Sacc.), grew at 5 °C on a defined salts medium plus vitamins and utilized a variety of simple and polymeric carbohydrates as the sole carbon and energy source. Mycelium was grown at temperatures between 3 and 15 °C in aerated submerged fermentation culture in chemically defined mediam plus sucrose. Optimum growth rates of 0.035-0.033 h-1 occurred between 9 and 12 °C. Growth in a simple medium showed that all biochemical and physiological processes necessary for growth were functional at 3 °C. The growth performance of the organism at low temperatures was no better than would be expected from extrapolation of mesophilic growth responses to temperature. The optimum growth temperature of 9-12 °C showed that some biochemical or physiological process was impaired above 12 °C. Uptake and incorporation of 35S-methionine by mycelium at different temperatures showed that general protein synthesis increased up to 25 °C, and hence was not responsible per se for the sensitivity to temperatures above 12 °C. Heat shock proteins were synthesized at the relatively low temperature of 25 °C, consistent with the low temperature optimum for growth. When grown with sucrose as the sole carbon source, the mycelium catalyzed the extracellular hydrolysis of sucrose, releasing glucose and fructose together with a small amount of fructan trisaccharides and a trace of tetra- and penta-saccharides. Fructan accumulation was transient, corresponding with maximal rates of sucrose hydrolysis. Most biomass formation occurred in the absence of fructan in the culture, hence fructan was not necessary for growth at low temperature and did not appear to function as a cryoprotectant. Invertase activity was mostly (60-70%) bound to mycelium; the remainder was free in the culture supernatant. The regulation of invertase expression appeared to be by sucrose-induction, rather than by end-product repression. Ferritin-like carboxylate-bridged non-heme diiron enzymes activate O 2 for a variety of difficult reactions throughout nature. These reactions often begin by abstraction of hydrogen from strong C H bonds. The enzymes activate O 2 at their diferrous cofactors to form canonical diferric peroxo intermediates, with a range of possible coordination modes. Herein, we explore the ability of high-energy resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD XAS) to provide insight into the nature of peroxo level intermediates in non-heme diiron proteins. Freeze quenched (FQ) peroxo intermediates from p -aminobenzoate N-oxygenase (AurF), aldehyde-deformylating oxygenase (ADO), and the β subunit of class Ia ribonucleotide reductase from Escherichia coli (Ec β) are investigated. All three intermediates are proposed to adopt different peroxo binding modes, and each exhibit different Fe Kα HERFD XAS pre-edge features and intensities. As these FQ-trapped samples consist of multiple species, deconvolution of HERFD XAS spectra based on speciation, as determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy, is also necessitated - yielding 'pure' diferric peroxo HERFD XAS spectra from dilute protein samples. Finally, the impact of a given peroxo coordination mode on the HERFD XAS pre-edge energy and intensity is evaluated through time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of the XAS spectra on a series of hypothetical model complexes, which span a full range of possible peroxo coordination modes to a diferric core. Herein, we use two‐color valence‐to‐core X‐ray emission spectroscopy (VtC XES) to identify protonation events across three oxidation states of the O2‐activating, radical‐initiating manganese–iron heterodinuclear cofactor in a class I‐c ribonucleotide reductase. This is the first application of VtC XES to an enzyme intermediate and the first simultaneous measurement of two‐color VtC spectra. Iron(II)- and 2-(oxo)-glutarate-dependent oxygenases catalyze diverse oxidative transformations that are often initiated by abstraction of hydrogen from carbon by iron(IV)-oxo (ferryl) complexes. Control of the relative orientation of the substrate C-H and ferryl Fe-O bonds, primarily by direction of the oxo group into one of two cisrelated coordination sites (termed inline and offline), may be generally important for control of the reaction outcome. Neither the ferryl complexes nor their fleeting precursors have been crystallographically characterized, hindering direct experimental validation of the offline hypothesis and elucidation of the means by which the protein might dictate an alternative oxo position. Comparison of high-resolution X-ray crystal structures of the substrate complex, an Fe(II)-peroxysuccinate ferryl precursor, and a vanadium(IV)-oxo mimic of the ferryl intermediate in the L-arginine 3-hydroxylase, VioC, reveals coordinated motions of active site residues that appear to control the intermediate geometries to determine reaction outcome. The Cerrado biome covers a large area of central Brazil, containing a mosaic of physiognomies determined by soil fertility, seasonal rainfall, and fire. The ground layer vegetation presents a high eudicot diversity and a high proportion of belowground phytomass, represented mainly by a diversity of underground organs storing carbohydrates. Fructans and other soluble carbohydrates are claimed to be more than reserves, conferring protection against abiotic stresses due to osmoregulation properties and rapid turnover. Inulin- and levan-type fructans are prominent and found respectively in the underground organs of Asteraceae and Amaranthaceae, abundant families in the herbaceous Cerrado flora. Poaceae, mainly Panicoideae, is also abundant and accumulates glucose, sucrose, and malto-oligosaccharides, but not fructans, in contrast with temperate grasses. Here, we review evidence that fructans in the herbaceous flora of the Cerrado play a significant role in tolerance to drought and fire, promoting the rapid recovery of the ground-layer vegetation after environmental disturbances. Herein, we describe an uncommon example of a manganese-thiolate complex, which is capable of activating dioxygen and catalyzing its two-electron reduction to generate H2O2. The structurally characterized dimercapto-bridged MnII dimer [MnII2(LS)(LSH)]ClO4 (MnII2SH) is formed by reaction of the LS ligand (2,2'-(2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-diyl)bis(1,1-diphenylethanethiolate)) with MnII. The unusual presence of a pendant thiol group bound to one MnII ion in MnII2SH is evidenced both in the solid state and in solution. The MnII2SH complex reacts with dioxygen in CH3CN, leading to the formation of a rare mono-µ-hydroxo dinuclear MnIII complex, [(MnIII2(LS)2(OH)]ClO4 (MnIII2OH), which has also been structurally characterized. When MnII2SH reacts with O2 in the presence of a proton source, 2,6-lutidinium tetrafluoroborate (up to 50 equiv), the formation of a new Mn species is observed, assigned to a bis-µ-thiolato dinuclear MnIII complex with two terminal thiolate groups (MnIII2), with the concomitant production of H2O2 up to ~40% vs MnII2SH. The addition of a catalytic amount of MnII2SH to an air-saturated solution of MenFc (n = 8 or 10) and 2,6-lutidinium tetrafluoroborate results in the quantitative and efficient oxidation of MenFc by O2 to afford the respective ferrocenium derivatives (MenFc+, with n = 8 or 10). Hydrogen peroxide is mainly produced during the catalytic reduction of dioxygen with 80-84% selectivity, making the MnII2SH complex a rare Mn-based active catalyst for two-electron O2 reduction. In nature, the protonation of oxo bridges is a commonly encountered mechanism for fine-tuning chemical properties and reaction pathways. Often, however, the protonation states are difficult to establish experimentally. This is of particular importance in the oxygen evolving complex of photosystem II, where identification of the bridging oxo protonation states is one of the essential requirements toward unraveling the mechanism. In order to establish a combined experimental and theoretical protocol for the determination of protonation states, we have systematically investigated a series of Mn model complexes by Mn K pre-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. An ideal test case for selective bis-μ-oxo-bridge protonation in a Mn dimer is represented by the system [MnIV2(salpn)2(μ-OHn)2]n+. Although the three species [MnIV2(salpn)2(μ-O)2], [MnIV2(salpn)2(μ-O)(μ-OH)]+ and [MnIV2(salpn)2(μ-OH)2]2+ differ only in the protonation of the oxo bridges, they exhibit distinct differences in the pre-edge region while maintaining the same edge energy. The experimental spectra are correlated in detail to theoretically calculated spectra. A time-dependent density functional theory approach for calculating the pre-edge spectra of molecules with multiple metal centers is presented, using both high spin (HS) and broken symmetry (BS) electronic structure solutions. The most intense pre-edge transitions correspond to an excitation of the Mn 1s core electrons into the unoccupied orbitals of local eg character (dz² and dxy based in the chosen coordinate system). The lowest energy experimental feature is dominated by excitations of 1s-α electrons, and the second observed feature is primarily attributed to 1s-β electron excitations. The observed energetic separation is due to spin polarization effects in spin-unrestricted density functional theory and models final state multiplet effects. The effects of spin polarization on the calculated Mn K pre-edge spectra, in both the HS and BS solutions, are discussed in terms of the strength of the antiferromagnetic coupling and associated changes in the covalency of Mn-O bonds. The information presented in this paper is complemented with the X-ray emission spectra of the same compounds published in an accompanying paper. There is a pressing need to quantify the risks of renewable energy developments such as offshore wind farms for protected populations. However, assessments are often based on incomplete data, or fail to consider variation in risk between sexes and at different times of year. We tracked northern gannets foraging from the world's largest colony (Bass Rock, Scotland) across five consecutive breeding seasons. We examine how seasonal and sex differences in behaviour affect the collision risk from planned and operational wind farms within their foraging range and assess the likely consequences for long-term population viability. Both sexes made shorter trips during chick-rearing than prior to chick-hatching, spent a greater proportion of time within wind farm sites and had an eight times greater potential collision risk during chick-rearing. Females made longer trips than males at both these times of year, flew higher and spent more time within wind farm sites, leading to three times greater collision risk for females. After accounting for the potential additional mortality from collisions, and assuming that the death of a parent also led to the loss of its offspring, the breeding population was projected to increase by 3.57% (95% CI: 2.16–5.15%) per year, compared with 6.56% (95% CI: 4.59–8.73%) in the absence of turbines, suggesting a negligible effect on population viability. However, additional mortality could result in greater immigration from neighbouring colonies, potentially affecting their viability and highlighting a need for research within a metapopulation framework to assess the impacts of offshore wind developments on vulnerable species across multiple connected sites. • Offshore windfarms may affect seabird populations through collisions with turbines. • We examined seasonal and sex specific collision risk at world's largest gannet colony. • Collision risk was highest among females rearing chicks. • Predicted collision mortality will slow population growth but not cause it to decline. • However, greater immigration from neighbouring colonies could affect their viability.
