Search

Experiments today can compress solids near isentropically to pressures approaching 100 × 106 atmospheres; however, determining the temperature of such matter remains a major challenge. Extended x-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy is one of the few techniques sensitive to the bulk temperature of highly compressed solid matter, and the validity of this temperature measurement relies on constraining the local ion structure from the EXAFS spectrum. At high-energy-density (HED) conditions, the local ion structure often becomes distorted, which must be accounted for during the EXAFS analysis. Described here is a technique, using a parametrized ion-distribution model to directly analyze EXAFS spectra that provides a better constraint on the local structure than traditional second- or third-order cumulant expansion techniques at HED conditions. The parametrized ion-distribution model is benchmarked by analyzing EXAFS spectra from nickel molecular-dynamics simulations at ∼100 GPa and shown to provide a 10%–20% improvement in constraining the cumulants of the true ion distribution. Two extended x-ray absorption fine structure flat crystal x-ray spectrometers (EFX's) were designed and built for high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy over a large energy range with flexible, on-shot energy dispersion calibration capabilities. The EFX uses a flat silicon [111] crystal in the reflection geometry as the energy dispersive optic covering the energy range of 6.3–11.4 keV and achieving a spectral resolution of 4.5 eV with a source size of 50 μm at 7.2 keV. A shot-to-shot configurable calibration filter pack and Bayesian inference routine were used to constrain the energy dispersion relation to within ±3 eV. The EFX was primarily designed for x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy and provides significant improvement to the Laboratory for Laser Energetics' OMEGA-60 XAFS experimental platform. The EFX is capable of performing extended XAFS measurements of multiple absorption edges simultaneously on metal alloys and x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy to measure the electron structure of compressed 3d transition metals. A high-resolving-power x-ray spectrometer has been developed for the OMEGA EP Laser System based on a spherically bent Si [220] crystal with a radius of curvature of 330 mm and a Spectral Instruments (SI) 800 Series charge-coupled device. The instrument measures time-integrated x-ray emission spectra in the 7.97- to 8.11-keV range, centered on the Cu Kα1 line. To demonstrate the performance of the spectrometer under high-power conditions, Kα1,2 emission spectra were measured from Cu foils irradiated by the OMEGA EP laser with 100-J, 1-ps pulses at focused intensities above 1018 W/cm2. The ultimate goal is to couple the spectrometer to a picosecond x-ray streak camera and measure temperature-equilibration dynamics inside rapidly heated materials. The magnetic fields generated at the surface of a laser-irradiated planar solid target are mapped using ultrafast proton radiography. Thick (50 μm) plastic foils are irradiated with 4-kJ, 2.5-ns laser pulses focused to an intensity of 4 x 1014 W/cm2. The data show magnetic fields concentrated at the edge of the laser-focal region, well within the expanding coronal plasma. The magnetic-field spatial distribution is tracked and shows good agreement with 2D resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations using the code draco when the Biermann battery source, fluid and Nemst advection, resistive magnetic diffusion, and Righi-Leduc heat flow are included. Magnetic fields generated by the nonlinear Rayleigh-Taylor growth of laser-seeded three-dimensional broadband perturbations were measured in laser-accelerated planar targets using ultrafast proton radiography. The experimental data show self-similar behavior in the growing cellular magnetic field structures. These observations are consistent with a bubble competition and merger model that predicts the time evolution of the number and size of the bubbles, linking the cellular magnetic field structures with the Rayleigh-Taylor bubble and spike growth. Fresnel zone plates (FZPs) are circular diffractive elements that operate as a lens for x-rays. They have gained interest in the field of laser-plasma physics due to their ability to achieve higher spatial resolution than pinholes. Their design and implementation are complicated by the fact that a significant amount of the x-rays passing through the FZP will not diffract (zeroth order) and present a background to the measurement. This background can be large and inhomogeneous depending on the geometric setup of the experiment. Here, we present calculations of the diffracted (first order) and un-diffracted (zeroth order) flux profiles, which makes it possible to optimize the contrast between the first order imaging rays and the zeroth order background. Magnetic fields generated by the Rayleigh-Taylor instability were measured in laser-accelerated planar foils using ultrafast proton radiography. Thin plastic foils were irradiated with ~4-kJ, 2.5-ns laser pulses focused to an intensity of ~1014 W/cm2 on the OMEGA EP Laser System. Target modulations were seeded by laser nonuniformities and amplified during target acceleration by the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The experimental data show the hydrodynamic evolution of the target and MG-level magnetic fields generated in the broken foil. Time-resolved K &agr; spectroscopy has been used to infer the hot-electron equilibration dynamics in high-intensity laser interactions with picosecond pulses and thin-foil solid targets. The measured K &agr;-emission pulse width increases from ∼3 to 6 ps for laser intensities from ∼ 1018 to 1019 W/cm2. Collisional energy-transfer model calculations suggest that hot electrons with mean energies from --0.8 to 2 MeV are contained inside the target. Experiments were performed using the Omega EP laser, which provided pulses containing 1kJ of energy in 9ps and was used to investigate high-power, relativistic intensity laser interactions with near-critical density plasmas, created from foam targets with densities of 3-100 mg/cm3. The effect of changing the plasma density on both the laser light transmitted through the targets and the proton beam accelerated from the interaction was investigated. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations enabled the interaction dynamics and laser propagation to be studied in detail. The effect of the laser polarization and intensity in the two-dimensional simulations on the channel formation and electron heating are discussed. In this regime, where the plasma density is above the critical density, but below the relativistic critical density, the channel formation speed and therefore length are inversely proportional to the plasma density, which is faster than the hole boring model prediction. Experiments have been performed to determine the effect of laser-pulse duration and energy on hot-electron-generation efficiency at high intensity. Thin copper foil targets were irradiated with 1 to 2100 J, 1 to 10 ps pulses focused to intensities >1018 W/cm2. The target volume was varied from 75 × 75 × 3 μm3 to 600 × 600 × 50 μm3 to access a range of bulk thermal-electron temperatures up to several hundred electron volts. Comparison of K-photon spectroscopy measurements from these targets with electron transport and radiation-generation calculations indicates that the energy conversion efficiency into hot electrons is 20 ± 10%, independent of laser-pulse duration and energy. Target-heating effects on the Kα1,2-emission spectrum from small-mass Cu targets irradiated with 1-ps pulses focused to intensities >1018 W/cm2 have been observed. A collisional-radiative atomic physics model is unable to reproduce the time-integrated Kα1,2-emission spectrum from the smallest-mass targets when calculated with a single, time-independent thermal-electron temperature. When time-dependent heating to several hundred electron volts is included in the model, the synthetic spectra better reproduce the main observed spectral features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plasma cavitation in an underdense helium plasma driven by an ultraintense laser pulse (I > 1020 Wcm-2) is studied. Shadowgraphy and interferometry diagnose plasma channel formation as the laser pulse propagates through the underdense plasma. Measurements of the spatially resolved Thomson side-scattered light generated by the intense-driver pulse indicate the transverse and longitudinal extremities of the cavitated regions that form. Multiple laser-driven channels are observed and each is shown to be a source of electrons with energies greater than 100MeV. Laser-driven magnetic reconnection is investigated using proton deflectometry. Two laser beams of nanosecond duration were focused in close proximity on a solid target to intensities of I∼1×1015 W cm-2. Through the well known ∇ne×∇Te mechanism, azimuthal magnetic fields are generated around each focal spot. During the expansion of the two plasmas, oppositely oriented field lines are brought together resulting in magnetic reconnection in the region between the two focal spots. The spatial scales and plasma parameters are consistent with the reconnection proceeding due to a Hall mechanism. An optimum focal spot separation for magnetic reconnection to occur is found to be ≈400±100 μm. Proton probing of the temporal evolution of the interaction shows the formation of the boundary layer between the two expanding plasma plumes and associated magnetic fields, as well as an instability later in the interaction. Such laboratory experiments provide an opportunity to investigate magnetic reconnection under unique conditions and have possible implications for multiple beam applications such as inertial confinement fusion experiments. A picosecond, time-resolved, x-ray spectroscopy platform was developed to study the thermal line emission from rapidly heated solid targets containing buried aluminum or iron layers. The targets were driven by high-contrast 1ω or 2ω laser pulses at focused intensities up to 1 × 1019 W/cm2. The experimental platform combines time-integrating and time-resolved x-ray spectrometers. Picosecond time resolution was achieved with a pair of ultrafast x-ray streak cameras coupled to high-throughput Hall spectrometers. Time-integrated spectra were collected on each shot to correct the streaked data for variations in x-ray photocathode spectral sensitivity. The time-integrated spectrometer uses three elliptical crystals to disperse x rays with energies between 800 and 2100 eV with moderate (E/ΔE ~ 450) resolving power. The streaked spectrometers accept four interchangeable conical crystals with higher resolving power (E/ΔE ~ 650) to measure the brightest thermal lines in the 1300 to 1700 eV spectral range. Measurements of the bidirectional plasma jets that form at the surface of a solid target during a laser-generated driven magnetic reconnection are presented. Resistivity enhancement of at least 25× the classical Spitzer value is required when applying the Sweet–Parker model of reconnection to reconcile the experimentally observed reconnection time scale. Analytic calculations show that a fast reconnection model, which includes a priori the effects of microturbulent resistivity enhancement, better reproduces the experimental observations. The interaction of intense laser pulses (5×1016 W/cm21018 W/cm2, where the target is heated to less than 100 eV. As target volume is reduced, efficient energy transfer by the refluxing electrons heats the targets to hundreds of eV. This affects L→K and M→K electronic transitions during ion de-excitation that probe the bulk plasma conditions during this rapid isochoric heating phase. Comparison of measured Kα yields in the cold-material limit with a Kα production model, and measured Kβ/Kα variations with numerical target-heating calculations, provides a robust method for inferring the fast-electron energy content. Results of experiments conducted at the Central Laser Facility (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory), illustrating the efficacy of utilizing a combination of transonic and subsonic ablation to increase the impulse delivered to an indirectly driven payload, are reported. Extreme ultraviolet imaging has been utilized to map the trajectory of the rear surface of an accelerating payload driven by a hohlraum with a peak energy-density-equivalent radiation temperature of around 130 eV. Payloads comprising an approximately 30–μm–thick solid-density plastic foil doped with chlorine, both with and without a gold flashing on the driver-facing surface, were accelerated by a combination of subsonic x-ray ablation of the rear surface of the payload and either subsonic, transonic, or supersonic ablation in a hohlraum facing low-density foam layer in intimate contact with the payload. Two different thicknesses of foam layer were incorporated in the experiment — 150 and 200 μm — in addition to a range of different foam densities from 30 to 100 mg/cc. It was observed that the maximum impulse was delivered in the case where the ablation wave propagation was approximately transonic in the foam layer. In such cases the impulse delivered to the payload was significantly greater than that achieved by direct (subsonic) ablation of the payload. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Three Paleoproterozoic A-type rapakivi granite suites (Jamon, Serra dos Carajás, and Velho Guilherme) are found in the Carajás metallogenic province, eastern Amazonian craton. Liquidus temperatures in the 900–870 °C range characterize the Jamon suite, those for Serra dos Carajás and Velho Guilherme are somewhat lower. Pressures of emplacement decrease from Jamon (3.2±0.7 kbar) through Serra dos Carajás (2.0±1.0 kbar) to Velho Guilherme (1.0±0.5 kbar). Oxidizing conditions (NNO+0.5) characterized the crystallization of the Jamon magma, the Velho Guilherme magmas were reducing (marginally below FMQ), and the Serra dos Carajás magmas were intermediate between the two in this respect. The three granite suites have Archean TDM model ages and strongly negative ɛ Nd values (−12 to −8 at 1880 Ma), and they were derived from Archean crust. The Jamon granite suite may have been derived from a quartz dioritic source, and the Velho Guilherme granites from K-feldspar-bearing granitoid rocks with some sedimentary input. The Serra dos Carajás granites either had a somewhat more mafic source than Velho Guilherme or were derived by a larger degree of melting. Underplating of mafic magma was probably the heat source for the melting. The petrological and geochemical characteristics of the Carajás granite suites imply considerable compositional variation in the Archean of the eastern Amazonian craton. The oxidized Jamon suite granites are similar to the Mesoproterozoic magnetite-series granites of Laurentia, and they were derived from Archean igneous sources that were more oxidized than the sources of the Fennoscandian rapakivi granites. The Serra dos Carajás and Velho Guilherme granites approach the classic reduced rapakivi series of Fennoscandia and Laurentia. No counterparts of the Mesoproterozoic two-mica granites of Laurentia have been found, however. Following the model of Hoffman [Hoffman, P., 1989. Speculations on Laurentia''s first gigayear (2.0 to 1.0 Ga). Geology 17, 135–138], the origin of the ∼1.88 Ga Carajás granites is related to a mantle superswell beneath the Trans-Amazonian supercontinent. This caused breakup of the continent and was associated with magmatic underplating and resultant crustal melting and generation of A-type granite magmas. The Paleoproterozoic continent that included the Archean and Trans-Amazonian domains of the Amazonian craton was assembled at ∼2.0 Ga; its disruption was initiated at ∼1.88 Ga, at least 200 Ma earlier than in Laurentia and Fennoscandia. Whole-rock and K-feldspar Pb, single zircon Pb-evaporation, and Nd whole-rock isotopic data are presented for granites of the Velho Guilherme intrusive suite and the volcanic rocks of the Uatuma˜ Group in the Caraja´s Mineral Province, southern Para´, Brazil. Pb–Pb zircon ages of 1867±4 Ma, 1862±16 Ma, and 1866±3 Ma for the Antonio Vicente, Mocambo, and Rio Xingu granite massifs, respectively, show that the granites were emplaced at ∼1870 Ma. Pb–Pb whole-rock reference age of the Uatuma˜ volcanic rocks, 1875±158 Ma, is comparable within the limits of the error. 1870 Ma thus represents the time of an important magmatic event in the eastern part of the Amazonian craton. Nd model ages of the granites (3.0–3.2 Ga) and volcanic rocks (2.9–3.1 Ga) and their strongly negative initial ϵNd values indicate that the magmas were derived from Mesoarchean rocks with a long crustal residence time. Experiments using the OMEGA EP laser system were performed to study collisionless shock acceleration of ions driven by the interaction of a relativistically intense laser pulse with underdense plasma. The energy spectrum of accelerated ions in the direction transverse to laser propagation is measured to have several narrow-band peaks which are quasi-monoenergetic with a typical energy bandwidth of 3%. In deuterium plasmas, these ions generate a significant number of fast fusion neutrons. Particle-in-cell simulations confirm that these ions were accelerated by the interaction of transverse shocks and that the appearance of quasi-monoenergetic spectral features depends on the growth of an ion-electron two-stream instability during the interaction. At the Laboratory for Laser Energetics' Omega Laser Facility, thin plastic shells were directly driven with ∼20 kJ resulting in a time-integrated x-ray yield of ∼1012 ph/eV/sr at 7 keV. Using temporally, spatially, and spectrally discriminating diagnostics, three x-ray emission phases were identified: corona emission produced by the laser ablation of the shell, core stagnation, and afterglow emission due to the expanding hot material after stagnation. The newly measured corona and afterglow emission phases account for ∼25% of the total x-ray signal and produce x-ray emission at a different time or larger radius than previously considered. The resulting implications of this additional emission for x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy are discussed. Finally, improvements to the laser drive intensity and uniformity produced a factor-of-2 increase in total x-ray emission while decreasing the size of the stagnated core. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Direct measurements of energy transfer across steep density and temperature gradients in a hot-dense-matter system are presented. Hot-dense-plasma conditions were generated by high-intensity laser irradiation of a thin-foil target containing a buried metal layer. Energy transfer to the layer was measured using picosecond time-resolved x-ray emission spectroscopy. The data show two x-ray flashes in time. Fully explicit, coupled particle-in-cell and collisional-radiative atomic kinetics model predictions reproduce these observations, connecting the two x-ray flashes with staged radial energy transfer within the target. Picosecond time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy is used to measure the spectral line shift of the 1s2p-1s² transition in He-like Al ions as a function of the instantaneous plasma conditions. The plasma temperature and density are inferred from the Al Hea complex using a nonlocal-thermodynamic-equilibrium atomic physics model. The experimental spectra show a linearly increasing redshift for electron densities of 1-5×1023cm-3. The measured line shifts are broadly consistent with a generalized analytic line-shift model based on calculations of a self-consistent field ion-sphere model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Time-gated Sc K-shell and Ge L-shell spectra are presented from a range of characterized thermodynamic states spanning ion densities of 10 19 – 10 20 cm − 3 and plasma temperatures around 2000 eV. For the higher densities studied and temperatures from 1000 to 3000 eV, the Sc and Ge x-ray emission spectra are consistent with steady-state calculations from the modern atomic kinetics model SCRAM. At the lower ion densities achieved through plasma expansion, however, the model calculations require a higher plasma temperature to reproduce the observed Ge spectrum. We attribute this to ionization disequilibrium of the Sc because the ionization time scales exceed the hydrodynamic timescale when the inferred temperatures diverge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experiments were performed using the Omega EP laser, operating at 740 J of energy in 8 ps (90 TW), which provides extreme conditions relevant to fast ignition studies. A carbon and hydrogen plasma plume was used as the underdense target and the interaction of the laser pulse propagating and channeling through the plasma was imaged using proton radiography. The early time expansion, channel evolution, filamentation, and self-correction of the channel was measured on a single shot via this method. A channel wall modulation was observed and attributed to surface waves. After around 50 ps, the channel had evolved to show bubblelike structures, which may be due to postsoliton remnants. Published measurements and models of the cross section for electrons causing K-shell emission from copper are reviewed to find a suitable expression to use when analyzing Kα-emission measurements in laser-solid experiments at peak intensities above 1018 W/cm2. Few measurements exist in the 0.1- to 10-MeV electron energy range currently of interest, leaving a number of possible suitable models that are summarized here with a number of typing errors corrected. Two different limiting forms for the cross section at relativistic energies are used, and existing measurements do not give a clear indication as to which is correct. Comparison with the limiting form of electron stopping power indicates an alternative relativistic form and also that the density-effect correction will be important in copper above 10 MeV. For data analysis relying on relative Kα emission caused by electrons with energy much greater than the K-shell binding energy, the existing uncertainty in cross sections is unimportant, but it will be a source of uncertainty when using absolute values and for electron energies up to ∼6× the binding energy. Experiments were performed on the Omega EP laser facility to study laser pulse propagation, channeling phenomena and electron acceleration from high-intensity, high-power laser interactions with underdense plasma. A CH plasma plume was used as the underdense target and the interaction of the laser pulse channeling through the plasma was imaged using proton radiography. High-energy electron spectra were measured for different experimental laser parameters. Structures observed along the channel walls are interpreted as having developed from surface waves, which are likely to serve as an injection mechanism of electrons into the cavitated channel for acceleration via direct laser acceleration mechanisms. Experiments on the multiterawatt (MTW) laser at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics will study the effect of the focal-spot shape on the forward acceleration and collimation of electrons. A compact electron spectrometer has been developed to record the energy spectra of electrons ejected in the interaction of the laser at multiple angular locations simultaneously. The modular system with replaceable magnets provides an adjustable energy band, currently 0.2–6 MeV. The detector is an array of imaging plates. The device is designed to operate in the high-noise environment (bremsstrahlung and Compton x rays, gamma rays, and scattered electrons), while being compact enough to fit in the 30 cm radius MTW target chamber. The detector geometry and shielding were optimized with the particle/radiation transport code GEANT4. Calibration was performed with beta sources. Biermann battery magnetic field generation driven by high power laser–solid interactions is explored in experiments performed with the OMEGA EP laser system. Proton deflectometry captures changes to the strength, spatial profile, and temporal dynamics of the self-generated magnetic fields as the target material or laser intensity is varied. Measurements of the magnetic flux during the interaction are used to help validate extended magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. Results suggest that kinetic effects cause suppression of the Biermann battery mechanism in laser–plasma interactions relevant to both direct and indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. Experiments also find that more magnetic flux is generated as the target atomic number is increased, which is counter to a standard MHD understanding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evolution of the plasma density in the rarefaction wave formed after a laser-driven shock is released from a CH foil was measured using optical interferometry. It was found that the plasma density profile is very sensitive to the conditions at the back surface of the foil before the shock release. Dedicated experiments demonstrated that radiation preheat by coronal x rays caused early expansion of the back surface and faster expansion of the rarefaction wave. Radiation-hydrodynamics simulations with accurate modeling of radiation preheat from the plasma corona are in good agreement with the experimental results. Experiments performed at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics with a continuous-wave (cw) x-ray source and on the OMEGA and OMEGA EP Laser Systems [Boehly et al., Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997) and Waxer et al., Opt. Photonics News 16, 30 (2005)] have utilized a Fresnel zone plate (FZP) to obtain x-ray images with a spatial resolution as small as ∼1.5 μm. Such FZP images were obtained with a charge-coupled device or a framing camera at energies ranging from 4.5 keV to 6.7 keV using x-ray line emission from both the cw source and high-intensity, laser-beam–illuminated metal foils. In all cases, the resolution test results are determined from patterns and grids backlit by these sources. The resolutions obtained are shown to be due to a combination of the spectral content of the x-ray sources and detector resolution limited by the magnification of the images (14× to 22×). High-speed framing cameras were used to obtain FZP images with frame times as short as ∼30 ps. Double-shell implosions on OMEGA were backlit by laser-irradiated Fe foils, thus obtaining a framing-camera–limited, FZP-image resolution of ∼3 μm–4 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experimental measurements using the OMEGA EP laser facility demonstrated direct laser acceleration (DLA) of electron beams to (505 ± 75) MeV with (140 ± 30) nC of charge from a low-density plasma target using a 400 J, picosecond duration pulse. Similar trends of electron energy with target density are also observed in self-consistent two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The intensity of the laser pulse is sufficiently large that the electrons are rapidly expelled along the laser pulse propagation axis to form a channel. The dominant acceleration mechanism is confirmed to be DLA and the effect of quasi-static channel fields on energetic electron dynamics is examined. A strong channel magnetic field, self-generated by the accelerated electrons, is found to play a comparable role to the transverse electric channel field in defining the boundary of electron motion. Proton beams driven by chirped pulse amplified lasers have multi-picosecond duration and can isochorically and volumetrically heat material samples, potentially providing an approach for creating samples of warm dense matter with conditions not present on Earth. Envisioned on a larger scale, they could heat fusion fuel to achieve ignition. We have shown in an experiment that a kilojoule-class, multi-picosecond short pulse laser is particularly effective for heating materials. The proton beam can be focussed via target design to achieve exceptionally high flux, important for the applications mentioned. The laser irradiated spherically curved diamond-like-carbon targets with intensity 4 × 1018 W/cm2, producing proton beams with 3 MeV slope temperature. A Cu witness foil was positioned behind the curved target, and the gap between was either empty or spanned with a structure. With a structured target, the total emission of Cu Kα fluorescence was increased 18 fold and the emission profile was consistent with a tightly focussed beam. Transverse proton radiography probed the target with ps order temporal and 10 μm spatial resolution, revealing the fast-acting focussing electric field. Complementary particle-in-cell simulations show how the structures funnel protons to the tight focus. Refraction-enhanced x-ray radiography (REXR) is used to infer shock-wave positions of more than one shock wave, launched by a multiple-picket pulse in a planar plastic foil. This includes locating shock waves before the shocks merge, during the early time and the main drive of the laser pulse that is not possible with the velocity interferometer system for any reflector. Simulations presented in this paper of REXR show that it is necessary to incorporate the refraction and attenuation of x rays along with the appropriate opacity and refractive-index tables to interpret experimental images. Simulated REXR shows good agreement with an experiment done on the OMEGA laser facility to image a shock wave. REXR can be applied to design multiple-picket pulses with a better understanding of the shock locations. We have built an absolutely calibrated, highly efficient, Bragg crystal spectrometer in von Hamos geometry. This zinc von Hamos spectrometer uses a crystal made from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite that is cylindrically bent along the non-dispersive axis. It is tuned to measure x-ray spectra in the 7-10 keV range and has been designed to be used on a Ten Inch Manipulator for the Omega and OmegaEP target chambers at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics in Rochester, USA. Significant shielding strategies and fluorescence mitigation have been implemented in addition to an imaging plate detector making it well suited for experiments in high-intensity environments. A high-performance cryogenic DT inertial confinement fusion implosion experiment is an especially challenging backlighting configuration because of the high self-emission of the core at stagnation and the low opacity of the DT shell. High-energy petawatt lasers such as OMEGA EP promise significantly improved backlighting capabilities by generating high x-ray intensities and short emission times. A narrowband x-ray imager with an astigmatism-corrected bent quartz crystal for the Si Heα line at ~1.86 keV was developed to record backlit images of cryogenic direct-drive implosions. A time-gated recording system minimized the self-emission of the imploding target. A fast target-insertion system capable of moving the backlighter target ~7c mi n ~100 ms was developed to avoid interference with the cryogenic shroud system. With backlighter laser energies of ~1.25 kJ at a 10-ps pulse duration, the radiographic images show a high signal-to-background ratio of >100:1 and a spatial resolution of the order of 10 µm. The backlit images can be used to assess the symmetry of the implosions close to stagnation and the mix of ablator material into the dense shell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations of magnetic reconnection between colliding plumes of magnetized laser-produced plasma are presented. Two counterpropagating plasma flows are created by irradiating oppositely placed plastic (CH) targets with 1.8-kJ, 2-ns laser beams on the Omega EP Laser System. The interaction region between the plumes is prefilled with a low-density background plasma and magnetized by an externally applied magnetic field, imposed perpendicular to the plasma flow, and initialized with an X-type null point geometry with B = 0 at the midplane and B = 8 T at the targets. The counterflowing plumes sweep up and compress the background plasma and the magnetic field into a pair of magnetized ribbons, which collide, stagnate, and reconnect at the midplane, allowing the first detailed observations of a stretched current sheet in laser-driven reconnection experiments. Electric and self-generated magnetic fields in direct-drive implosion experiments on the OMEGA Laser Facility were investigated employing radiography with ~10- to 60-MeV protons. The experiment used plastic-shell targets with imposed surface defects (glue spots, wires, and mount stalks), which enhance self-generated fields. The fields were measured during the 1-ns laser drive with an on-target intensity ~1015 W/cm². Proton radiographs show multiple ring-like structures produced by electric fields ~107 V/cm and fine structures from surface defects, indicating self-generated fields up to ~3 MG. These electric and magnetic fields show good agreement with two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations when the latter include the ∇Te-∇ne source, Nernst convection, and anisotropic resistivity. The simulations predict that self-generated fields affect heat fluxes in the conduction zone and, through this, affect the growth of local perturbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Filamentation due to the growth of a Weibel-type instability was observed in the interaction of a pair of counterstreaming, ablatively driven plasma flows, in a supersonic, collisionless regime relevant to astrophysical collisionless shocks. The flows were created by irradiating a pair of opposing plastic (CH) foils with 1.8 kJ, 2-ns laser pulses on the OMEGA EP Laser System. Ultrafast laser-driven proton radiography was used to image the Weibel-generated electromagnetic fields. A narrowband x ray imager for the Cu Kα line at ∼8 keV using a spherically bent quartz crystal has been implemented on the OMEGA EP laser at the University of Rochester. The quartz crystal is cut along the 2131 (211) planes for a 2d spacing of 0.3082 nm, resulting in a Bragg angle of 88.7°, very close to normal incidence. An optical system is used to remotely align the spherical crystal without breaking the vacuum of the target chamber. The images show a high signal-to-background ratio of typically >100:1 with laser energies ≥1 kJ at a 10-ps pulse duration and a spatial resolution of less than 10 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent development of petawatt-class lasers with kilojoule-picosecond pulses, such as OMEGA EP [L. Waxer et al., Opt. Photonics News 16, 30 (2005)], provides a new diagnostic capability to study inertial-confinement-fusion (ICF) and high-energy-density (HED) plasmas. Specifically, petawatt OMEGA EP pulses have been used to backlight OMEGA implosions with energetic proton beams generated through the target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) mechanism. This allows time-resolved studies of the mass distribution and electromagnetic field structures in ICF and HED plasmas. This principle has been previously demonstrated using Vulcan to backlight six-beam implosions [A. J. Mackinnon et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 045001 (2006)]. The TNSA proton backlighter offers better spatial and temporal resolution but poorer spatial uniformity and energy resolution than previous D3He fusion-based techniques [C. Li et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 77, 10E725 (2006)]. A target and the experimental design technique to mitigate potential problems in using TNSA backlighting to study full-energy implosions is discussed. The first proton radiographs of 60-beam spherical OMEGA implosions using the techniques discussed in this paper are presented. Sample radiographs and suggestions for troubleshooting failed radiography shots using TNSA backlighting are given, and future applications of this technique at OMEGA and the NIF are discussed. Fast ignition is a two-step inertial confinement fusion concept where megaelectron volt electrons ignite the compressed core of an imploded fuel capsule driven by a relatively low-implosion velocity. Initial surrogate cone-in-shell, fast-ignitor experiments using a highly shaped driver pulse to assemble a dense core in front of the cone tip were performed on the OMEGA/OMEGA EP Laser [T. R. Boehly et al., Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997); L. J. Waxer et al., Opt. Photonics News 16, 30 (2005)]. With optimal timing, the OMEGA EP pulse produced up to ∼1.4 × 107 additional neutrons which is a factor of ∼4 more neutrons than without short-pulse heating. Shock-breakout measurements performed with the same targets and drive conditions demonstrate an intact cone tip at the time when the additional neutrons are produced. Velocity interferometer system for any reflector measurements show that x-rays from the shell's coronal plasma preheat the inner cone wall of thin-walled Au cones, while the thick-walled cones that are used in the integrated experiments are not affected by preheat. High-intensity, short-pulse laser-interaction experiments with small-mass, wedge-shaped-cavity Cu targets are presented. The diagnostics provided spatially and spectrally resolved measurements of the Cu Kα line emission at 8 keV. The conversion efficiency of short-pulse laser energy into fast electrons was inferred from the x-ray yield for wedge opening angles between 30° and 60° and for s- and p-polarized laser irradiation. Up to 36±7% conversion efficiency was measured for the narrowest wedge with p-polarization. The results are compared with predictions from two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Distinctions between benign and malignant tumors are less evident in the central nervous system than in other tissues. Since the level of cell proliferation is an important feature in tumor grading, we applied AgNOR in 50 cases of brain tumors with different grades and histological origins in order to check its efficiency in discriminating between benign and malignant cases. We found significant differences between the means of grade I (1.76) and grade IV (2.46) tumors. No significant differences were observed considering the same grading with distinct histological types or age of patients, reinforcing the efficiency of AgNOR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An ultrafast streaked extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectrometer (5-20 nm) was developed to measure the temperature dynamics in rapidly heated samples. Rapid heating makes it possible to create exotic states of matter that can be probed during their inertial confinement time--tens of picoseconds in the case of micron-sized targets. In contrast to other forms of pyrometry, where the temperature is inferred from bulk x-ray emission, XUV emission is restricted to the sample surface, allowing for a temperature measurement at the material-vacuum interface. The surface-temperature measurement constrains models for the release of high-energy-density material. Coupling the XUV spectrometer to an ultrafast (<2-ps) streak camera provided picosecond-time scale evolution of the surface-layer emission. A dual-channel, curved-crystal spectrograph was designed to measure time-integrated x-ray spectra in the ∼1.5 to 2 keV range (6.2–8.2 Å wavelength) from small-mass, thin-foil targets irradiated by the VULCAN petawatt laser focused up to 4×1020 W/cm2. The spectrograph consists of two cylindrically curved potassium-acid-phthalate crystals bent in the meridional plane to increase the spectral range by a factor of ∼10 compared to a flat crystal. The device acquires single-shot x-ray spectra with good signal-to-background ratios in the hard x-ray background environment of petawatt laser-plasma interactions. The peak spectral energies of the aluminum Heα and Lyα resonance lines were ∼1.8 and ∼1.0 mJ/eV sr (∼0.4 and 0.25 J/Å sr), respectively, for 220 J, 10 ps laser irradiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wide-ranging measurements of sub-picosecond laser interactions with large noble gas cluster targets have been conducted in order to help clarify the nature and extent of the underlying laser-plasma heating. Within the sub-relativistic vacuum irradiance range of 1016-1017Wcm-2, we find that electron temperatures measured with continuum x-ray spectroscopy exhibit a pronounced multi-keV enhancement. Analysis indicates this behaviour to be consistent with collisional or collisionless resonant heating mechanisms. We also present the first measurements of laser-to-cluster energy deposition at relativistic vacuum irradiances, our data demonstrating absorption fractions of 90% or more. Optical probing was used to resolve the onset of a supersonic ionization front resulting from this very high absorption, and shows that despite significant prefocus heating, the greatest plasma energy densities can be generated about the vacuum focus position. Electron energy spectra measurements confirm that laser-plasma super-heating occurs, and together with ion data establish that relativistic laser-plasma coupling in atomic clusters can take place without significant MeV particle beam production. In conjunction with optical self-emission data, the optical probing also indicates laser pre-pulse effects at peak vacuum irradiance of 5×1019Wcm-2. High-resolution images of the rear-surface optical emission from high-intensity (I∼1019 W/cm2) laser illuminated metal foils have been recorded using coherent transition radiation (CTR). CTR is generated as relativistic electrons, generated in high-intensity laser-plasma interactions, exit the target’s rear surface and move into vacuum. A transition radiation diagnostic (TRD) records time-integrated images in a 24 nm bandwidth window around λ=529 nm. The optical transmission at λ=1053 nm, the laser wavelength, is 15 orders of magnitude lower than the transmission at the wavelength of interest, λ=527 nm. The detector is a scientific grade charge-coupled device (CCD) camera that operates with a signal-to-noise ratio of 103 and has a dynamic range of 104. The TRD has demonstrated a spatial resolution of 1.4 μm over a 1 mm field of view, limited only by the CCD pixel size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reduction of proton acceleration in the interaction of a high-intensity, picosecond laser with a 50-μm aluminum target was observed when 0.1–6 μm of plastic was deposited on the back surface (opposite side of the laser). The maximum energy and number of energetic protons observed at the back of the target were greatly reduced in comparison to pure aluminum and plastic targets of the same thickness. This is attributed to the effect of the interface between the layers. Modeling of the electron propagation in the targets using a hybrid code showed strong magnetic-field generation at the interface and rapid surface heating of the aluminum layer, which may account for the results.
