Marisa Angell, a doctoral candidate in architectural history at Yale, was in Berlin "doing some language work," she noted, but she also intended to go out and see the architecture of the city. She realized the explanatory nature of museums, and it inspired her to begin thinking about her academic home, New Haven, as the basis for a new kind of museum, one that takes the buildings of the city itself as its exhibitions. She calls the project the Urban Museum of Modern Architecture. Angell began to work on a series of brochures for seven of New Haven's most important buildings. They include Paul Rudolph's Yale Art and Architecture Building and Crawford Manor. Each brochure tells the history of its subject, and some show other works by the same architect, or buildings that the one under discussion was influenced by, or a picture of the site before the current structure went up.

For Scott Williams, the founder and principal of Sawa Architecture, a pool house in New Jersey marks a career turning point. The pool house contains a bar, a changing room, a water closet, and an outdoor shower. A12-foot-high arc of steel shields the front of the structure. It is a thoroughly modern and striking building, reminiscent of a Richard Serra sculpture, but layered and functional. And it's a complete contrast to the new porch structure added to the rear of the house at the other end of the pool. The porch has shutters, pilasters, and a definite Colonial style. In fact, much of Williams's built work hews more closely to the Classical orders than to Corbusier. His work in the Classical idiom comes as much from chance as from training, though both played a role.

The two partners, Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen took an economic risk in buying land and building their first building, but it has been a risk that paid off.Wilhelmsen is Norwegian, but Saunders emigrated from Canada, where he lived until 1996.In 1998, Tommie Wilhelmsen returned to Norway from Stuttgart, Germany, where he had been working with Behnisch, Behnisch&He and Saunders were both becoming known around Bergen, and the director of the Bergen Architecture School paired the two up to teach a six-week course.

In one of the most widely publicized architect selections ever, the design by Daniel Libeskind was chosen on February 27, 2003 for the World Trade Center site. The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey selected the scheme by Studio Daniel Libeskind, with Gary Hack, Hargreaves Associates, and Jeff Zupan, but the rebuilding process and Libeskind's ongoing role remain unclear. A spokesman for the Port Authority, said, “We haven't made any decisions yet. We would expect that Mr. Libeskind would be involved in some fashion in all the different aspects ” of rebuilding. The article reports that New York State leaders and the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. unveiled a schematic design for the first of two cultural buildings at the World Trade Center site on May 19, 2005. This article reports that the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City's East Village recently unveiled schematic designs for its new academic building. Thorn Mayne of Morphosis is creating the ninestory building, which will house the school of engineering and the department of humanities and social sciences.The building will have a glass envelope surrounded by a metal screen that will be operable by studio occupants inside. The building's elevators will stop only on every other floor, so students and faculty will be forced to take the stairs in the atrium and interact with each other. An exhibition at Cooper Union that closed on October 23 illustrated some of Mayne's initial design concepts, and showed that the architect struggled with the building's preset envelope.

This article reports that six months after the fall of the World Trade Center towers, a documentary filmmaker began filming time-lapse movies of the site from 35-millimeter cameras placed atop buildings around the area. The project is called Project Rebirth, and the documentary filmmaker behind it is Jim Whitaker, who is also the president of Imagine Entertainment, the film production company started by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard. In September, Project Rebirth launched its own Web site, www. projectrebirth.org, which is a project in its own right in several ways. In addition to information about the film, the site provides an interactive timeline, interviews with important figures in the rebuilding process, and information about the architecture, urban planning, and engineering that is going into the rebuilding.

New York-based architect Frederic Schwartz was selected last month to design the New Jersey 9/11 memorial in Jersey City, New Jersey, against the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S. The design, which is called "Empty Sky," frames a view of the former Twin Towers from the Hudson River's banks in Jersey City. He also won the commission to design Westchester County, New York's memorial, and was a finalist to design a Hoboken, New Jersey, memorial. The New Jersey memorial will be composed of two 30-foot-high, 200-foot-long steel walls, flanking a 16-foot-wide bluestone path. The walls will be inscribed with the names of New Jersey's nearly 700 victims and will be surrounded by a landscaped, that forms a natural amphitheater facing Manhattan.

When Alexander Gorlin, principal of Alexander Gorlin Architects, approached the design of a kitchen for the renovation of a Modernist 1958 uptown Manhattan town house in New York City, he preserved something of the 1950s idea of a kitchen — even though the space wasn't one to begin with. Gorlin designed the new kitchen to preserve the "luminous" nature of the room, and created translucent cabinetry to let the natural light through. The translucent cabinets hang from the ceiling, completely separate from the window frame behind. The cabinet doors were manufactured by Rudy Art Glass, and the sliding panels in the back are made of Lumasite plastic.

The Gipsy Trail residence, designed by Archi-Tectonics for a site in rural upstate New York, looks almost boxy from the outside, but running through the center spine of the house is an organic "armature," a twisting collection of the house's infrastructure. Within the armature are the kitchen, fireplace, heating and cooling mechanisms, and perhaps most spectacularly, the master bathroom. As the armature winds through the center of the house, a skylight follows. The skylight is formed of individual glass panes dividing the zinc roof. The architects, led by principal Winka Dubbeldam, oriented the entire house to capture views of the lake and as much natural light as possible, and deliberately chose shiny white and chrome fixtures to make the most of the light.

New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has released drawings for a new transit hub in Lower Manhattan, to be designed by Grimshaw's New York office. The new building will link stations for nine subway lines, and will stand at the corner of Broadway and Fulton Street, about a block from the site of the World Trade Center. The building itself is planned as a 50-foot-tall glass pavilion, with a tapering steel-and-glass dome rising from the middle. The design, say its architects, is intended to make the station a neighborhood landmark and bring light into the now-dark subway platforms below ground. The design incorporates two small stores at street level, and preserves the Corbin Building, an ornate office building from 1889 that sits adjacent to the new subway entrance.

As the highly scrutinized designs for the World Trade Center and Pentagon memorials continue to progress, several smaller, more specific September 11 memorials of interest have also been developing in New York. On Staten Island, contractors working for New York City's Economic Development Corp. broke ground for Staten Island's memorial, which its architect, Masayuki Sono, calls Postcards. Sono has been working to refine the design with another architect, Lapshan Fong, since he won the open competition in June 2003.

Family and community groups involved in advocacy for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site agree that the process is entering a new, more settled phase. Monica Iken, the founder and chairperson of September's Mission, an organization representing families of victims of September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, feels comfortable with the current state of development. Other groups, however, are not so content. The Coalition of 9/11 Families, a large advocacy group comprised of 9/11 family organizations, has polled victims' families and other interested parties and has found that many are unhappy about a number of matters.

The Cooper Union in New York City, New York, announced that architect Thom Mayne of the firm Morphosis will design the school's new academic building. The building, which will rise to nine stories and cover an entire block in Manhattan, will be Mayne's first major project in New York City. Mayne has not produced any designs for the building yet, having been selected on the basis of a Request for Proposal and an in-depth interview process. He was one of four finalists selected from an initial field of 150.

This article checks up on one of last year's Design Vanguard architects, who has recently completed a year of working with a Pritzker Prize winner and is contemplating his next, metaphorical, move up-to a higher level of practice. Sahel Al-Hiyari, an architect from Amman, Jordan, joined the ranks of the Design Vanguard on December 2002. Al-Hiyari was then just beginning a one-year apprenticeship of sorts, sponsored by Rolex Co., during which he worked with Alvaro Siza, the Pritzker Prize-winning Portuguese architect. The two architects discussed some of the more philosophical aspects of architecture and topics as far afield as the history of Islamic architecture in Portugal.

Despite protests from local preservationists, the Chinese government plans to begin construction on the 161,458-square-foot, Pel Partnership-designed Suzhou Museum, on the site of a classical garden in the city of Suzhou, Jiangsu Zheng, China. The Humble Administrators garden was originally laid out in the early 16th century, and its nearly 13 acres rank among a handful of the most famous classical gardens. Pel's museum would replace a group of 200-year-old traditional wooden buildings in the southwest courtyard of the garden, which do not have United Nations protection.
