Remote limb conditioning (RLC), performed by intermittent interruption of blood flow to a limb, triggers endogenous tolerance mechanisms and improves stroke outcomes. The underlying mechanism for the protective effect involves a shift of circulating monocytes to a Ly6CHigh proinflammatory subset in normal metabolic conditions. The current study investigates the effect of RLC on stroke outcomes in subjects with obesity, a vascular comorbidity. Compared to lean mice, obese stroke mice displayed significantly higher circulating monocytes (monocytosis), increased CD45High monocytes/macrophages infiltration to the injured brain, worse acute outcomes, and delayed recovery. Unlike lean mice, obese mice with RLC at 2 hours post-stroke failed to shift circulating monocytes to pro-inflammatory status and nullified RLC-induced functional benefit. The absence of the monocyte shift was also observed in splenocytes incubated with RLC serum from obese mice, while the shift was observed in the cultures with RLC serum from lean mice. These results showed that the alteration of monocytosis and subsets underlies negating RLC benefits in obese mice and suggest careful considerations of comorbidities at the time of RLC application for stroke therapy. CD36 expressed in multiple cell types regulates inflammation, vascular function, and innate immunity. Specifically, CD36 in microvascular endothelial cells (ECs) signals to elicit inflammation and causes EC death. This study investigated roles for EC-CD36 on acute stroke pathology in normal and obese conditions. Obesity induced by a high-fat diet (HD) selectively increased CD36 expression in ECs, not in monocytes/macrophages, in the post-ischemic brain. Mice deficient CD36 in ECs (ECCD36−/−) showed reduced injury size and vascular permeability in normal conditions. While control mice fed a HD developed obesity and aggravated stroke injury, ECCD36−/− mice were resistant to develop an obesity phenotype. Subjecting ECCD36−/− mice to stroke resulted in reduced injury size and BBB disruption. Moreover, the mice had reduced MCP-1 and CCR2 gene expression, resulting in reduced monocyte trafficking with improved survival and acute motor function. Reduced MCP-1 and CCR2 expression was still evident in ECCD36−/− mice subjected to severe stroke, suggesting that monocyte trafficking is an infarct-independent metabolic effect associated with specific EC-CD36 deletion. Our findings demonstrate the importance of EC-CD36 in developing vascular comorbidities and suggest that targeting EC-CD36 is a potential preventative strategy to normalize vascular risk factors, leading to improved acute stroke outcomes. Ameliorating blood–brain barrier disruption and altering scar formation dynamics are potential strategies that may improve post-stroke recovery. CD36 is a class B scavenger receptor that plays a role in innate immunity, inflammation and vascular dysfunction and regulates post-stroke injury, neovascularization, reactive astrogliosis and scar formation. By subjecting WT and CD36KO mice to different MCAo occlusion durations to generate comparable acute lesion sizes, we addressed the role of CD36 in BBB dysfunction, scar formation and recovery. The majority of stroke recovery studies primarily focus on motor function. Here, we employed an extensive behavioral test arsenal to evaluate psychological and cognitive endpoints. While not evident during the acute phase, CD36 deficient mice displayed significantly attenuated BBB leakage and scar formation at three months after stroke compared to wild-type littermates. Assessment of motor (open field, rotarod), anxiety (plus maze, light-dark box), depression (forced swim, sucrose preference) and memory tests (water maze) revealed that CD36 deficiency ameliorated stroke-induced behavioral impairments in activity, hedonic responses and spatial learning and strategy switching. Our findings indicate that CD36 contributes to stroke-induced BBB dysfunction and scar formation in an injury-independent manner, as well as to the chronic motor and neurophysiological deficits in chronic stroke. Osteopontin (OPN) is a phosphorylated glycoprotein expressed in various tissues, including brain, and mediates a wide range of cellular activities. In our previous studies, we reported recombinant OPN and RGD and SLAY-containing OPN-peptide icosamer (OPNpt20) exhibited robust neuroprotective activities in an animal model of transient focal ischemia, and attributed these effects to the anti-inflammatory, pro-angiogenic, and phagocytic functions of OPNpt20. In the present study, we truncated OPNpt20 to 13 or 7 amino acid peptides containing RGD (R) and/or SLAY (S) motif (OPNpt13RS, OPNpt7R, OPNpt7RS, and OPNpt7S) and their cell motility and migration inducing activities were examined in BV2 cells (a microglia cell line). All four peptides significantly enhanced BV2 cell motility and migration, but OPNpt7R, an RGD-containing 7-amino-acid OPN peptide (VPNGRGD), was found to be most potent and its potency was comparable to OPNpt20. Phagocytic activity and F-actin polymerization were also significantly enhanced in OPNpt7R-treated BV2 cells. Importantly, studies using two mutant peptides (OPNpt7R-RAA and OPNpt7R-RAD, wherein RGD in OPNpt7R was replaced with RAA or RAD, respectively) revealed that all these effects of OPNpt7R, motility, migration, F-actin polymerization, and phagocytosis induction, were RGD-dependent. Furthermore, the Erk, Fak, and Akt signaling pathways appeared to be involved in the induction of phagocytic activity by OPNpt7R. Co-treating cells with OPNpt7R and D98059 or wortmannin (pharmacological inhibitors of Erk and Akt, respectively) significantly suppressed OPNpt7R-mediated phagocytosis induction. Although a considerable number of studies about the effect of different insecticides on plant physiology and metabolism have been carried out, research work about the comparative action of structurally different classes of insecticide on physiological and biochemical properties of soybean seed germination and early growth has not been found. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different classes of insecticides on soybean seed germination and early plant growth. Soybean seeds of Bosuk cultivar were soaked for 24 h in distilled water or recommended dose (2 mL L − 1 , 1 mL L − 1 , 0.5 g L − 1 , and 0.5 g L − 1 water for insecticides Mepthion, Myungtaja, Actara, and Stonate, respectively) of pesticide solutions of four structurally different classes of insecticides – Mepthion (fenitrothion; organophosphate), Myungtaja (etofenprox; pyrethroid), Actara (thiamethoxam; neonicotinoid), and Stonate (lambda-cyhalothrin cum thiamethoxam; pyrethroid cum neonicotinoid) – which are used for controlling stink bugs in soybean crop. Insecticides containing thiamethoxam and lamda-cyhalothrin cum thiamethoxam showed positive effects on seedling biomass and content of polyphenol and flavonoid, however fenitrothion insecticide reduced the seed germination, seed and seedling vigor, and polyphenol and flavonoid contents in soybean. Results of this study reveal that different classes of insecticide have differential influence on physiologic and metabolic actions like germination, early growth, and antioxidant activities of soybean and this implies that yield and nutrient content also might be affected with the application of different types of insecticide. High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is an endogenous danger signal molecule. In the postischemic brain, HMGB1 is massively released during acute damaging process and triggers inflammatory processes. Moreover, it has been reported HMGB1 augments the proinflammatory effect of LPS by direct interaction. In previous studies, the authors showed intranasally delivered a HMGB1 binding heptamer peptide (HBHP; HMSKPVQ) has robust neuroprotective effects in the ischemic brain after middle cerebral artery occlusion and that it exerts an anti-inflammatory effect. In the present study, the authors investigated whether HBHP suppresses the augmentation of the proinflammatory effect of LPS by HMGB1. In primary microglial cultures, low doses of LPS (5 ng/ml) and recombinant HMGB1 (rHMGB1, 20 ng/ml) synergistically activated microglial cells, and HMGB1–LPS binding was detected. In addition, synergistic NO accumulation along with direct HMGB1–LPS binding was also observed when primary microglial cultures were treated with LPS (5 ng/ml) and HMGB1 accumulated in NMDA-conditioned medium (NCM). Co-treatment of microglial cells with HBHP and LPS or rHMGB1 (NCM), or treatment with rHMGB1 or NCM and LPS after pre-incubating rHMGB1 (or NCM) with HBHP markedly suppressed their synergistic activation. Furthermore, interactions between rHMGB1 and LPS or between HMGB1 in NCM and LPS were suppressed dose-dependently by HBHP, indicating that HBHP suppressed the synergism between HMGB1 and LPS and the underlying mechanism involved inhibition of HMGB1–LPS binding. Abstract: Three different compositions of ZnO–In2O3 composite nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning, and their gas sensing characteristics were compared to those of pure ZnO and In2O3 nanofibers. All ZnO–In2O3 composite nanofibers showed high response to trimethylamine (TMA), relatively low cross-response to C2H5OH, and negligible cross-responses to CO and H2; pure ZnO or In2O3 nanofibers did not show selective detection of TMA. The maximum responses to 5ppm TMA of the ZnO–In2O3 composite nanofibers with the compositions of [Zn]:[In]=67:33, 50:50, and 33:67 by at% were 133.9 at 300°C, 82.9 at 350°C, and 119.4 at 375°C, respectively. Considering all the sensing characteristics such as gas response, selectivity, and sensing/recovering kinetics together, the operation of the ZnO–In2O3 nanofiber sensor with the composition of [Zn]:[In]=33:67 by at% at 375°C was determined to be in optimal condition to detect TMA. The significant enhancement of gas response and selectivity by the formation of composite nanofibers is discussed in relation to the variation of particle size, the formation of hetero-interfaces between ZnO and In2O3, and the combination of two sensing materials with different catalytic properties, gas adsorption behaviors, and acid–base properties. Abstract: Gas sensors are employed in many applications including detection of toxic and combustible gases, monitoring emissions from vehicles and other combustion processes, breath analysis for medical diagnosis, and quality control in the chemicals, food and cosmetics industries. Many of these applications employ miniaturized solid-state devices, whose electrical properties change in response to the introduction of chemical analytes into the surrounding gas phase. Key challenges remain as to how to optimize sensor sensitivity, selectivity, speed of response and stability. The principles of operation of such devices vary and a brief review of operating principles based on potentiometric/amperometric, chemisorptive, redox, field effect and nanobalance approaches is presented. Due to simplicity of design and ability to stand up to harsh environments, metal oxide-based chemoresistive devices are commonly selected for these purposes and are therefore the focus of this review. While many studies have been published on the operation of such devices, an understanding of the underlying physicochemical principles behind their operation have trailed behind their technological development. In this article, a detailed review is provided which serves to update progress made along these lines. The introduction of nanodimensioned materials has had a particularly striking impact on the field over the past decade. Advances in materials processing has enabled the fabrication of tailored structures and morphologies offering, at times, orders of magnitude improvements in sensitivity, while high-resolution analytical methods have enabled a much improved examination of the structure and chemistry of these materials. Selected examples, illustrating the type of nanostructured devices being fabricated and tested, are discussed. This review concludes by highlighting trends suggesting directions for future progress. Abstract: High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is an endogenous danger signal molecule. In a previous report, we showed that HMGB1 is massively released during NMDA-induced acute damaging process in the postischemic brain and triggers inflammatory processes and induces neuronal apoptosis. We have also reported a robust neuroprotection of intranasally delivered HMGB1 siRNA in the postischemic rat brain (middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), 60min). In the present study, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of intranasally delivered HMGB1 binding heptamer peptide (HBHP; HMSKPVQ), which was selected using a phage display approach, in the same stroke animal model. A pull-down assay using biotin-labeled HBHP showed that HBHP binds directly to HMGB1, specifically to HMGB1 A box, confirming HMGB1/HBHP interaction. HBHP significantly suppressed HMGB1-mediated neuronal cell death in primary cortical cultures and HMGB1/HBHP binding was detected in NMDA-conditioned culture media. However, a heptamer peptide composed of a scrambled sequence of the seven amino acids in HBHP failed to bind HMGB1 and had no protective effect. Furthermore, HBHP (300ng) delivered intranasally at 30min before MCAO significantly suppressed infarct volume in the postischemic rat brain (maximal reduction by 41.8±5.4%) and ameliorated neurological and behavioral deficits. In contrast, scrambled heptamer peptide had no protective effect at the same dose. Together these results suggest that intranasal HBHP ameliorates neuronal damage in the ischemic brain by binding HMGB1, which might inhibit the function of HMGB1 as an endogenous danger signal molecule. Noninvasive intranasal drug administration has been noted to allow direct delivery of drugs to the brain. In the present study, the therapeutic efficacy of intranasal small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery was investigated in the postischemic rat brain. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled control siRNA was delivered intranasally in normal adult rats using e-PAM-R, a biodegradable PAMAM dendrimer, as gene carrier. Florescence-tagged siRNA was found in the cytoplasm and processes of neurons and of glial cells in many brain regions, including the hypothalamus, amygdala, cerebral cortex, and striatum, in 1 hour after infusion, and the FITC-fluorescence was continuously detected for at least 12 hours. When siRNA for high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), which functions as an endogenous danger molecule and aggravates inflammation, was delivered intranasally, the target gene was significantly depleted in many brain regions, including the prefrontal cortex and striatum. More importantly, intranasal delivery of HMGB1 siRNA markedly suppressed infarct volume in the postischemic rat brain (maximal reduction to 42.8 ± 5.6% at 48 hours after 60 minutes middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)) and this protective effect was manifested by recoveries from neurological and behavioral deficits. Abstract: One-dimensional (1D) amorphous InGaZnO4 (a-IGZO) submicron-tubes were synthesized in a method involving an electrospun polymeric fiber template and the direct RF-sputter-coating of a-IGZO films combined with subsequent calcination at 450°C. The a-IGZO hollow fibers with a diameter of 300nm and a shell thickness of 20–30nm showed an amorphous structure, as confirmed by XRD and HR-TEM analyses. Gas sensors using semiconducting a-IGZO tube networks exhibited n-type gas sensing characteristics and a 3.7-fold higher gas response (R gas /R air =109.5 at 2ppm NO2) compared to (R gas /R air =29.4) planar a-IGZO thin films at an operating temperature of 300°C. The enhanced gas response of a-IGZO tubes is attributed to the greater space charge modulation depth associated with the thin shell structures and the porous networks which are readily accessible by gas. Abstract: Although RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated gene silencing provides a powerful strategy for modulating specific gene functions, difficulties associated with siRNA delivery have impeded the development of efficient therapeutic applications. In particular, the efficacy of siRNA delivery into neurons has been limited by extremely low transfection efficiencies. e-PAM-R is a biodegradable arginine ester of PAMAM dendrimer, which is readily degradable under physiological conditions (pH 7.4, 37°C). In the present study, we investigated the efficiency of siRNA delivery by e-PAM-R in primary cortical cultures and in rat brain. e-PAM-R/siRNA complexes showed high transfection efficiencies and low cytotoxicities in primary cortical cultures. Localization of florescence-tagged siRNA revealed that siRNA was delivered not only into the nucleus and cytoplasm, but also along the processes of the neuron. e-PAM-R/siRNA complex-mediated target gene reduction was observed in over 40% of cells and it was persistent for over 48h. The potential use of e-PAM-R was demonstrated by gene knockdown after transfecting High mobility group box-1 (HMGB1, a novel cytokine-like molecule) siRNA into H2O2- or NMDA-treated primary cortical cultures. In these cells, HMGB1 siRNA delivery successfully reduced both basal and H2O2- or NMDA-induced HMGB1 levels, and as a result of that, neuronal cell death was significantly suppressed in both cases. Furthermore, we showed that e-PAM-R successfully delivered HMGB1 siRNA into the rat brain, wherein HMGB1 expression was depleted in over 40% of neurons and astrocytes of the normal brain. Moreover, e-PAM-R-mediated HMGB1 siRNA delivery notably reduced infarct volume in the postischemic rat brain, which is generated by occluding the middle cerebral artery for 60min. These results indicate that e-PAM-R, a novel biodegradable nonviral gene carrier, offers an efficient means of transfecting siRNA into primary neuronal cells and in the brain and of performing siRNA-mediated gene knockdown. Collecting real-time breath humidity data is important for calibrating gas sensors from interfering signals in breath components, ultimately for accurately monitoring a patient's physiological information for applications in non-invasive and point-of-care diagnostics. In this work, atomically thin 2D metal oxide nanosheets (NSs) were synthesized by a liquid phase exfoliation process and their humidity sensing properties were investigated. Interestingly, Opposite humidity sensing responses (R D /R H) were observed between semiconducting oxide and metallic oxide NSs. For the semiconducting manganese (Mn) oxide NSs, decreasing resistance transitions were obtained with the response of 24.01 at 44.5% RH at low humidity levels (i.e., 6.1–45% RH), which was governed by proton (H+) conduction. On the other hand, the metallic ruthenium (Ru) oxide NSs exhibited increasing resistance transitions with the response of 0.28 at 96.3% RH at a high humidity range (i.e., 50–99.9% RH) as a result of proton trapping by accepting electrons upon the exposure to excess water molecules. Ru oxide NSs exhibited the response and recovery times of 68 sec and 8 sec, respectively, at 96.3% RH. Real-time breath humidity monitoring is demonstrated by integrating Ru oxide NSs with a wristband-type wireless sensing module, which can transmit the sensing data to a mobile device. Abstract: Chemical and physical synthesis routes were combined to prepare macroporous TiO2 thin films by RF sputtering onto poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) microsphere templated substrates. The organic template was removed by thermal decomposition at 450°C leaving a thin layer of TiO2 anatase hollow hemispheres with diameter commensurate with that of the original PMMA microspheres (800nm). This unique morphology increased active surface area while reducing the deleterious interfacial effects between film and substrate leading to substantially enhanced NO2 sensitivity. Abstract: We report on the dielectric properties and leakage current characteristics of 3 mol% Mn-doped Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) thin films post-annealed up to 600 °C following room temperature deposition. The suitability of 3 mol% Mn-doped BST films as gate insulators for low voltage ZnO thin film transistors (TFTs) is investigated. The dielectric constant of 3 mol% Mn-doped BST films increased from 24 at in-situ deposition up to 260 at an annealing temperature of 600 °C due to increased crystallinity and the formation of perovskite phase. The measured leakage current density of 3 mol% Mn-doped BST films remained on the order of 5×10−9 to 10−8 A/cm2 without further reduction as the annealing temperature increased, thereby demonstrating significant improvement in the leakage current characteristics of in-situ grown Mn-doped BST films as compared to that (5×10−4 A/cm2 at 5 V) of pure BST films. All room temperature processed ZnO–TFTs using a 3 mol% Mn-doped BST gate insulator exhibited a field effect mobility of 1.0 cm2/Vs and low voltage device performance of less than 7 V. Abstract: We have investigated the effect of coupling agents with different organic moiety on the dielectric properties of polyimide/BaTiO3 (70 nm) composite films. INAAT (isopropyl tris(N-amino-ethyl aminoethyl)titanate, KR 44) and APTS (3-amino-propyl-triethoxysilane) were used as coupling agents, respectively, for homogeneous dispersion of BaTiO3 particles into a polyimide matrix. The composite films were prepared by pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA)-based polyimide. Enhanced dispersion of BaTiO3 particles was obtained by the use of INAAT with more organic moiety compared to that afforded by APTS. The polyimide composite with BaTiO3 particles (BaTiO3 content at 50 vol.%) treated by INAAT showed an increased dielectric constant of 19.03 while retaining an appropriate dielectric loss of 0.0109, as compared to the dielectric constant (14.64) of polyimide/APTS-treated BaTiO3 composite. The results of this work demonstrate the potential use of an INAAT coupling agent with more organo functional groups for obtaining enhanced dielectric properties in a polyimide/BaTiO3 composite for application in an embedded capacitor. In the present study, we truncated OPNpt20 to 13 or 7 amino acid peptides containing RGD (R) and/or SLAY (S) motifs (OPNpt13RS, OPNpt7R, OPNpt7RS, and OPNpt7S), and their neuroprotective efficacy was examined in a rat middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model. Intranasal administration of all four peptides significantly reduced infarct volume; OPNpt7R (VPNGRGD), the 7-amino-acid peptide containing an RGD motif, was determined to be the most potent, with efficacy comparable to that of OPNpt20. Additionally, sensory–motor functional deficits of OPNpt7R-administered MCAO animals were significantly improved, as indicated by the modified neurological severity scores and rotarod test. Notably, the expression of M1 markers was suppressed, whereas that of M2 markers (Arginase 1, CD206, and VEGF) was significantly enhanced in OPNpt7R-treated primary microglia cultures. Inflammation resolution by OPNpt7R was further confirmed in MCAO animals, in which upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines (Arg1, IL-10, IL-4, and CD36) and enhanced efferocytosis were detected. Moreover, studies using three mutant peptides (OPNpt7R-RAA or OPNpt7R-RAD, where RGD was replaced with RAA or RAD, respectively, and OPNpt7R-sc containing scrambled sequences) revealed that the RGD motif plays a vital role in conferring neuroprotection. In conclusion, the RGD-containing OPN heptamer OPNpt7R exhibits neuroprotective effects in the post-ischemic brain by suppressing M1 markers and augmenting M2 polarization of microglia and the RGD motif plays a critical role in these activities. Research on high‐efficiency and cost‐efficient catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is still a vital but challenging issue for commercializing metal–air batteries. Herein, a single‐molecule/atom hybrid catalyst is developed to boost the ORR, in which iron phthalocyanine molecules containing molecular Fe─N4 moieties couple with atomic Co─N4 sites on the surface of polyhedral carbon. Density functional theory calculations reveal that face‐to‐face laminated construction of Fe─N4 and Co─N4 in the hybrid catalyst can effectively modulate the electronic structure of active iron atoms and reduce the energy barrier of the rate‐determining step for ORR. As a result, this hybrid catalyst demonstrates excellent ORR performance, featuring a half‐wave potential of 0.904 V, a peak power density of 238.3 mW cm−2 for zinc–air battery, and outstanding electrocatalytic stability. Background: Monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) and microglia elicit neural inflammation and clear debris for subsequent tissue repair and remodeling. The role of infiltrating MDMs in the injured brain, however, has been controversial due to overlapping antigen expression with microglia. In this study, we define the origin and function of MDMs in cerebral ischemia.Methods: Using adoptive transfer of GFP+ splenocytes into adult asplenic mice subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion, we compared the role of CD11b+/CD45+/NK1.1-/Ly6G- MDMs and microglia in the ischemic brain. The phagocytic activities of MDMs and microglia were measured by the uptake of fluorescent beads both in vivo with mice infused with GFP+ splenocytes and ex vivo with cultures of isolated brain immune cells.Results: Stroke induced an infiltration of MDMs [GFP+] into the ipsilateral hemisphere at acute (3 days) and sub-acute phases (7 days) of post-stroke. At 7 days, the infiltrating MDMs contained both CD45High and CD45Low subsets. The CD45High MDMs in the injured hemisphere exhibited a significantly higher proliferation capacity (Ki-67 expression levels) as well as higher expression levels of CD11c when compared to CD45Low MDMs. The CD45High and CD45Low MDM subsets in the injured hemisphere were approximately equal populations, indicating that CD45High MDMs infiltrating the ischemic brain changes their phenotype to CD45Low microglia-like phenotype. Studies with fluorescent beads reveal high levels of MDM phagocytic activity in the post-stroke brain, but this phagocytic activity was exclusive to post-ischemic brain tissue and was not detected in circulating monocytes. By contrast, CD45Low microglia-like cells had low levels of phagocytic activity when compared to CD45High cells. Both in vivo and ex vivo studies also show that the phagocytic activity in CD45High MDMs is associated with an increase in the CD45Low/CD45High ratio, indicating that phagocytosis promotes MDM phenotype conversion.Conclusions: This study demonstrates that MDMs are the predominant phagocytes in the post-ischemic brain, with the CD45High subset having the highest phagocytic activity levels. Upon phagocytosis, CD45High MDMs in the post-ischemic brain adopt a CD45Low phenotype that is microglia-like. Nanostructured semiconducting metal oxides and particularly nanofiber-based photoelectrodes can provide enhanced energy conversion efficiencies in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In this study ZnO/poly(vinyl acetate) composite nanofiber mats were directly electrospun onto a glass substrate coated with F:SnO2, then hot pressed at 120 °C and calcined at 450 °C. This resulted in multiple nanofiber networks composed of a twisted structure of 200–500 nm diameter cores with ∼30 nm single grains. This review reports on the most updated technological aspects of Li–air battery cathode materials. It provides the reader with recent developments, alongside critical views. The requirements for air‐cathodes, as well as the classification and characterization of carbon‐based and carbon‐free air cathodes, are listed. The effects of two major substituent groups of materials, namely carbon and advanced materials (metals, metal‐oxides, metal‐carbides, and metal‐nitrides) aimed at replacing carbon, are discussed in terms of their chemical and electrochemical stability. The report covers aspects of surface chemistry and structure influence on the electrolyte and discharge products stability. The review also reports on the efforts to suppress side reactions and deterioration of the polymeric binders (if a composite electrode is being considered). This is recognized as a means to enhance Li–air battery performance. The report concludes with an outlook and perspective, providing the readers with some insight on other factors and their impact on the long road toward a viable air‐cathode suitable for Li–air battery operations. Biological systems are composed of hierarchical structures made of a large number of proteins. These structures are highly sophisticated and challenging to replicate using artificial synthesis methods. To exploit these structures in materials science, biotemplating is used to achieve biocomposites that accurately mimic biological structures and impart functionality of inorganic materials, including electrical conductivity. However, the biological scaffolds used in previous studies are limited to stereotypical and simple morphologies with little synthetic diversity because of a lack of control over their morphologies. This study proposes that the specific protein assemblies within the cell‐derived extracellular matrix (ECM), whose morphological features are widely tailorable, can be employed as versatile biotemplates. In a typical procedure, a fibrillar assembly of fibronectin—a constituent protein of the ECM—is metalized through an antibody‐guided biotemplating approach. Specifically, the antibody‐bearing nanogold is attached to the fibronectin through antibody–antigen interactions, and then metals are grown on the nanogold acting as a seed. The biomimetic structure can be adapted for hydrogen production and sensing after improving its electrical conductivity through thermal sintering or additional metal growth. Ethyl pyruvate (EP) is a simple aliphatic ester of pyruvic acid and has been shown to have robust neuroprotective effects via its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-apoptotic functions. In an effort to develop novel EP derivatives with greater protective potencies than EP, we generated four EP isosteres, among them the neuroprotective potency of N,N-diethyl-2-oxopropanamide (DEOPA), in which the ethoxy group of EP was replaced with diethylamine, was far greater than that of EP. When DEOPA was administered intravenously (5 mg/kg) to rat middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model at 6 hrs post-surgery, it suppressed infarct formation, ameliorated neurological and sensory/motor deficits, and inhibited microglial activation and neutrophil infiltrations in the postischemic brain more effectively than EP. In particular, DEOPA markedly suppressed LPS-induced nitrite production and cytokine/chemokine inductions in microglia, neutrophils, and endothelial cells and these effects are attributable to inhibition of the activity of NF-κB by suppressing IκB-α degradation and p65 to DNA binding. In addition, DEOPA suppressed NMDA-induced neuronal cell death in primary cortical neuron cultures by NAD replenishment and suppression of NF-κB activity. Together, these results indicate DEOPA has multi-modal protective effects against ischemic brain damage targeting numerous cell types in the brain and also against other inflammation-related diseases. To address the problem of the serious capacity fading in lithium–sulfur batteries, a multi‐functional PEO(polyethylene oxide)/LiFSI (lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide)/PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) (PLP) gel polymer electrolyte is exploited by coating PLP on a carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based sulfur cathode (PLP‐S/CNTs) with a controlled thermal annealing process. The annealing process leads to the conformal infusion of PLP through the matrix of S/CNTs with retaining the amorphous phase of the PLP, which enhance the rate performance compared to the bare S/CNTs. The PLP coating drives the transformation of more elemental sulfur to Li2S2/Li2S without forming intermediary product by restraining soluble‐polysulfides formation. Furthermore, the PLP coating successfully inhibits the dissolution of Li2Sx (x > 4) in PEO and prevents the loss of active material in the cathode, which is confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Comprehensively, the PLP coating applied to the surface of the S/CNTs cathode exhibit significantly suppressed shuttle effect and greatly improve long‐term cycle stability of the lithium–sulfur battery. The synthesized PLP‐coated S/CNTs composite cathode demonstrates a high specific capacity of 573.6 mAh g−1 at a current density of 0.5 C after 1 000 cycles, even achieving 318.1 mAh g−1 at an extremely high C‐rate (6 C). which is unprecedented performance among the reported studies on coating technology. Highlights: Flash-induced porous graphene (FPG) was synthesized via a broad-spectrum flash lamp that induced synergistic photo-effects between ultraviolet and visible-near-infrared wavelengths, resulting in large-area synthesis in just a few milliseconds. A hollow pillar graphene with low sheet resistance of 18 Ω sq−1 was produced, exhibiting low density (0.0354 g cm−3) and outstanding absolute electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 1.12 × 105 dB cm2 g−1. A lightweight, flexible, and high-throughput FPG is applied for electromagnetic interference shielding of a drone radar system and the human body. Porous 2D materials with high conductivity and large surface area have been proposed for potential electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials in future mobility and wearable applications to prevent signal noise, transmission inaccuracy, system malfunction, and health hazards. Here, we report on the synthesis of lightweight and flexible flash-induced porous graphene (FPG) with excellent EMI shielding performance. The broad spectrum of pulsed flashlight induces photo-chemical and photo-thermal reactions in polyimide films, forming 5 × 10 cm2-size porous graphene with a hollow pillar structure in a few milliseconds. The resulting material demonstrated low density (0.0354 g cm−3) and outstanding absolute EMI shielding effectiveness of 1.12 × 105 dB cm2 g−1. The FPG was characterized via thorough material analyses, and its mechanical durability and flexibility were confirmed by a bending cycle test. Finally, the FPG was utilized in drone and wearable applications, showing effective EMI shielding performance for internal/external EMI in a drone radar system and reducing the specific absorption rate in the human body. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), featuring ordered nanopores with numerous accessible redox sites, have drawn much attention as promising electrode materials for rechargeable batteries. Thus far, however, COF‐based battery electrodes have exhibited limited capacity and unsatisfactory cycling stability due to the unwanted side reactions over their large surface area. Herein, a fluorine‐rich covalent organic framework (F‐COF) as an electrode material with improved stability and performance for potassium‐ion batteries is developed. The fluorinated COF not only stabilizes intercalation kinetics of K+ ions but also reinforces its electron affinity and conductivity, improving the reversibility of bond transitions during discharge–charge cycles. As a result, F‐COF affords a high specific capacity (95 mAh g−1 at fast rates up to 5 C) and excellent cycling stability (5000 cycles with ≈99.7% capacity retention), outperforming the pristine COF‐based electrodes devoid of F atoms. Notably, the experimental capacity of F‐COF approaches its theoretical value, confirming that a large proportion of electroactive sites are being actively utilized. Altogether, this work addresses the significant role of F atoms in improving the K+‐ion storage capability of COFs and provides the rational design principles for the continued development of stable and high‐performance organic electrode materials for energy storage devices. The lithium metal anode is notoriously unstable and reactive to electrolytes, forming brittle solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers with uneven distribution, exacerbating Li dendrites that ultimately limit the battery life. Here, this work passivates Li metal with electrolyte‐swellable polymer nanolayers deposited monolithically by the initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) to reinforce the native SEI layers and stabilize their interface. The 100 nm iCVD poly(dimethylaminomethyl styrene) (pDMAMS) layer is swelled by 264% under a carbonate electrolyte, establishing the electrolyte‐filled soft scaffold for Li‐ion transport. Notably, the solvogel accommodates homogeneous Li2O‐free and Li2CO3‐rich native SEI layers, providing a record‐high Li‐ion transference number of 0.95 and ionic conductivity of 6.54 mS cm−1. The developed pDMAMS‐Li anodes extend the cycle life by 550% in Li–Li symmetric cells and 600% in LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 full cells compared to pristine Li metal. The mechanistic details of the swollen‐soft‐scaffold strategy are elucidated by depth profile analysis of the pDMAMS homopolymer compared to pDMAMS/electrolyte‐phobic copolymers, providing new insights to manage the interface of liquid‐state electrolyte and solid‐state Li metal by using a novel class of bifunctional solvogel. Activation of metal oxides by light is a robust yet facile approach to manipulating their surface chemistry for favorable reactions with target molecules in heterogeneous catalysis and gas sensors. However, a limited understanding of interface chemistry and the involved mechanism impedes the development of a rational design of oxide interfaces for light‐activated gas sensing. Herein, the TiOx‐assisted photosensitization of In2O3 toward NO2 sensing is investigated as a case study to elucidate the detailed mechanism of light‐activated surface chemistry at the metal/gas interface. The resultant heterogeneous oxides exhibit outstanding NO2 sensing performance under light irradiation thanks to abundant photoexcited electrons and holes that serve as adsorption and desorption sites, respectively, to accelerate both surface reactions. Furthermore, the facile transfer of electrons and holes across the TiOx‐In2O3 interface contributes to improving the reversibility of sensing kinetics. Through this study, the mechanistic understanding is established of how the surface chemistry of metal oxide surfaces can be tuned by light activation providing an effective route to the design fabrication of high‐performance gas sensors. Silicon-coated molybdenum sulfide nanosheets were prepared in a thin-film shape (Si–MoS 2 TFs) through metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and radio frequency (RF) sputtering. By using MOCVD, the MoS 2 thin films composed of nanosheets were vertically grown on stainless steel substrates. To address the problem of polysulfide dissolution and shuttling effect of MoS 2 during discharge and charge reactions in thin-film Li-ion batteries, the entire surfaces of MoS 2 TFs were covered with silicon layers using RF sputtering. Compared with pristine MoS 2 TFs without protection, the Si–MoS 2 TFs showed excellent reversibility with a high capacity of ∼2000 mAh g−1 for 500 cycles in thin-film Li-ion batteries. Both materials – MoS 2 and Si – were synergistically taken into account to enhance the ability to store Li ions in the host structures and complement each other during repeated conversion and alloying reactions. The literature in this area, published since 2017, is the main focus of this review. Electropolymerization has played a particularly prominent role in sensor development since its discovery in 1980 by Diaz at IBM. The ability to entrain receptors such as antibodies, engineered virus particles, and metal chelating agents into a conductive polymer sensing element during electropolymerization has proven to be a powerful means of preparing chemiresistors for a variety of analyses. Electrodeposition has also been used to prepare nanostructured metal indicator microelectrodes, enabling of a new modality for transducing biosensors. Electrodeposited metal nanowires have formed the basis for rapid and sensitive sensors for hydrogen gas. Electrodeposition has also been exploited as a powerful means for amplifying weak biosensor signals, extending their dynamic range. Due to the unique properties which are considerably different from macro‐scale or bulk materials, 1D) nanostructures have received great interests. In particular, they have greatly contributed to building next‐generation batteries by providing beneficial features such as short ion/electron pathways, structural versatility (i.e., formation of 3D current collectors, free‐standing electrodes, and separators), and excellent stress relaxation. Owing to these definite advantages, 1D nanostructure is often followed by discovery of new electrode materials. This review provides a systematic overview of the state‐of‐the‐art research progresses on 1D nanostructures, which are extensively used for rechargeable batteries. Specifically, a brief introduction of some important 1D nanostructuring methods is started and then, in situ structural characterizations using 1D nanostructures are summarized, which allow a great step forward in atomic‐scale monitoring of reaction kinetics and observing dynamic structural evolution of electrode materials. 1D nanstructuring in solid‐state electrolytes and stabilization of metal anodes are also highlighted which are not only substantially important in current research trends for future batteries but also rarely discussed in previous reviews. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted significant interest as gas‐sensing materials due to their unique crystal structure and surface. However, there are still issues when it comes to expanding the types of sensing gases for the TMD gas sensors. To extend gas‐sensing selectivity for the TMD gas sensors in this study, a monolayer (ML) 2D metal–organic framework (MOF) is introduced on top of the PtSe2 gas sensor, thereby tuning the major sensing analyte of PtSe2 from NO2 to H2S. Density functional theory calculations elucidate that the metal species of ML MOFs are attributed to the tuned selectivity of the analytes, based on the difference in binding energies. It is also demonstrated that ML MOF maintained the high responsivity of the pristine PtSe2 even at a low concentration of gas (200 ppb). This is further confirmed through the molecular dynamics simulations, which reveal that the ML feature of the ML MOF is highly essential to preserve the intrinsic ultra‐low limit detection properties of pristine PtSe2. Single-crystal nanocrystals of catalytic metals and oxides are essential for understanding chemical interactions on well-defined catalyst surfaces. However, a comprehensive understanding of the crystallographic origins for such enhancement has been lacking. This work provides formal evidence of the structure–property relationship through a model study on single-crystal TiO 2. Our approach involves transient pulse heating to manipulate porosity and phase in epitaxially-grown TiO 2 nanosheets along the (0 0 1) plane. Furthermore, we could introduce high-entropy alloy nanoparticles into the system, which exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward CO oxidation, achieving T 90 at 143 °C. This improved performance is attributed to the interplay between the catalytic nanoparticles and the multiphase support, facilitating CO and O 2 adsorption. Our study contributes to a fundamental understanding of structure–property relationships in heterogeneous catalyst systems. [Display omitted] van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs), consisting of more than one type of atomically thin 2D crystal layers are emerging platforms for interesting electrical, optical, and catalytic applications. High yield production of vdWHs with atomic scale precision is crucial prerequisite for practical utilization. Here we present a generalized approach of random solution phase, high yield heteroassembly of semiconducting vdWHs by exploiting inherent surface charge states of 2D materials as well as chemical affinity of specific ligand end-functionalities. Facile removal of noncovalent functionalized ligands via simple pH reversal enables clean interfaces within vdWHs, yielding outstanding optoelectrical and electrochemical properties driven by fluent interfacial charge transfer among the layered 2D structures. The generality of this procedure is demonstrated by the formation of a series of different vdWHs such as WSe 2 -MoS 2 , graphene–MoS 2 - and phospherene–WSe 2 heterostructures. Atomically thin WSe 2 –MoS 2 phototransistor displayed an exceptionally fast response time with high sensitivity. Graphene–MoS 2 overcomes the inherent charge transfer issue of MoS 2 for electrochemical catalyst. This study examined the efficiency of fungal strain (Cunninghamella bertholletiae) isolated from the rhizosphere of Solanum lycopersicum to reduce symptoms of salinity, drought and heavy metal stresses in tomato plants. In vitro evaluation of C. bertholletiae demonstrated its ability to produce indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA), ammonia and tolerate varied abiotic stresses on solid media. Tomato plants at 33 days' old, inoculated with or without C. bertholletiae, were treated with 1.5% sodium chloride, 25% polyethylene glycol, 3 mM cadmium and 3 mM lead for 10 days, and the impact of C. bertholletiae on plant performance was investigated. Inoculation with C. bertholletiae enhanced plant biomass and growth attributes in stressed plants. In addition, C. bertholletiae modulated the physiochemical apparatus of stressed plants by raising chlorophyll, carotenoid, glucose, fructose, and sucrose contents, and reducing hydrogen peroxide, protein, lipid metabolism, amino acid, antioxidant activities, and abscisic acid. Gene expression analysis showed enhanced expression of SlCDF3 and SlICS genes and reduced expression of SlACCase, SlAOS, SlGRAS6, SlRBOHD, SlRING1, SlTAF1, and SlZH13 genes following C. bertholletiae application. Pesticidal activities of 4-[5-(2-cyclopropylaminopyrimidin-4-yl)-4-(4-chloro-2-fluoro-phenyl)thiazol-2-yl]-1-methylpiperidine, designated as Comp I, have been determined against a mosquito larva, Culex pipiens pallens, and a phytopathogenic fungus, Phytophthora capsici. Comp I was used as the leading compound in this study. The compounds were synthesized by reacting them with two functional groups, 3-thiophenyl and 2-thiophenyl groups, instead of 4-chloro-2-fluorophenyl group in Comp I. Other functional groups such as 2-aminothiazole, 2-(1-methylpiperazin-4-yl)thiazole, and 2-(piperazin-4-yl)thiazole were also introduced instead of 2-methylpiperidin-4-yl-thiazole of Comp I. Compounds designated as XIII-6~XV-7 were newly synthesized and their structures were confirmed by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Mosquito larvicidal activities of all the synthesized compounds against C. pipiens pallens were examined and Comp I among them showed the strongest larvicidal activity as 0.513 mM of LC50 value. The fungicidal activities of all the synthesized compounds against P. capsici were examined using the whole plant method. Among the XIII-6~XV-7 chemicals, 5-(2-cyclopropylaminopyrimidin-4-yl)-4-(thiophen-2-yl)thiazol-2-amine (VIII-6) showed the most potent antifungal activity in vivo. While the EC50 value of the commercial fungicide dimethomorph was 4.26 μM, EC50 of VIII-6 was 0.94 μM. Thermochromic sensors provide an intuitive and real‐time solution for monitoring the local temperature with naked eyes. Conventional thermochromic sensors often utilize either solution‐type or dense film‐type platforms, which are suboptimal morphologies for exposing a large number of dye molecules to the surface, leading to low sensitivity and sluggish responding speeds. Herein, this article introduces rational synthetic routes to fabricate highly sensitive nanofiber (NF) sensor membranes loaded with thermochromic dyes (C3H6N6·CH2O)x‐loaded nanofibers (NFs) sensor membranes by alignment‐controllable electrospinning techniques (x–y perpendicular and rotary). The NF‐based porous sensor membranes exhibit two‐ to fivefold improved thermochromic sensitivity (ΔRGB) compared to those of dense film‐type sensors at 31.6–42.7 °C. This is attributed to the uniform distribution of dyes throughout the porous NF structure (≈95.7%), which exhibits excellent light transmittance that is 10–30‐fold higher than that of film‐type sensors. Based on the available shape‐conforming synthetic strategies, this article further demonstrates wearable thermochromic sensors in the forms of mask‐, patch‐, and bracelet‐type devices, which can accurately monitor body temperature in real time. Flexible and mechanically robust gas sensors are the key technologies for wearable and implantable electronics. Herein, the authors demonstrate the high-performance, flexible nitrogen dioxide (NO2) chemiresistors using a series of n-type conjugated polymers (CPs: PNDIT2/IM-x) and a polymer dopant (poly(ethyleneimine), PEI). Imine double bonds (C = N) are incorporated into the backbones of the CPs with different imine contents (x) to facilitate strong and selective interactions with NO2. The PEI provides doping stability, enhanced electrical conductivity, and flexibility. As a result, the NO2 sensors with PNDIT2/IM-0.1 and PEI (1:1 by weight ratio) exhibit outstanding sensing performances, such as excellent sensitivity (𝚫R/Rb = 240%@1 ppm), ultralow detection limit (0.1 ppm), high selectivity (𝚫R/Rb < 8%@1 ppm of interfering analytes), and high stability, thereby outperforming other state-of-the-art CP-based chemiresistors. Furthermore, the thin film of PNDIT2/IM-0.1 and PEI blend is stretchable and mechanically robust, providing excellent flexibility to the NO2 sensors. Glycyrrhizin (GL), a triterpene present in the roots and rhizomes of licorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra), has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects. In our previous reports, we demonstrated the neuroprotective effects of GL in the postischemic brain and in kainic acid (KA)-induced seizure animal model. In this KA-induced seizure model, the systemic administration of GL 30 min before KA administration significantly suppressed neuronal cell death and markedly suppressed gliosis and proinflammatory marker inductions. In the present study, we showed that high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), an endogenous danger signal, was induced in hippocampal CA1 and CA3 regions of the same KA-induced model, and peaked at ~3 h and at 6 days post-KA. HMGB1 was transiently induced in neurons and astrocyte at 3 h post-KA, and it was released from dying neurons and accumulated in serum at 12 h post-KA. Furthermore, after ~4 days of almost undetectable levels in the hippocampus, delayed and marked HMGB1 induction was detected at 6 days post-KA, mainly in astrocytes and endothelial cells, in which HMGB1 was localized in nuclei, and not secreted into serum. Interestingly, GL suppressed HMGB1 inductions in hippocampus and also suppressed its release into serum in KA-treated mice. Since we established previously that GL has anti-inflammatory and anti-excitotoxic effects in this KA-induced seizure model, these results indicate that the neuroprotective effect of GL in the KA-injected mouse brain might be attributable to the inhibitions of HMGB1 induction and release, which in turn, mitigates the inflammatory process. Porous and hollow nanostructures functionalized with nanoscopic catalysts have attracted considerable interest in a wide range of applications depending on surface reactions. In this study, we present an efficient and versatile synthetic strategy of porous metal oxide hollow frameworks (HFs) decorated with noble metal nanoparticles (NPs). The key lies in the use of porous and bicontinuous polystyrene- block -poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS- b -P4VP) microparticles as templates, which feature pores on the order of several hundred nanometers in size. Homogeneous Pt loading on the surface of the porous microparticles is achieved through the preferential adsorption of Pt precursors onto the P4VP block via electrostatic interactions. Subsequent SnO 2 thin film deposition and calcination ultimately yield honeycomb-like SnO 2 HFs with macropores and uniform distribution of Pt NPs. The Pt NP-loaded SnO 2 HFs exhibit exceptional formaldehyde (HCHO) sensing capabilities, characterized by remarkable sensitivity (31.4 at 5 ppm), rapid response time (4.7 s at 5 ppm), ultra-low detection limit of 10 ppb, and remarkable cross-selectivity. These outstanding features result from their high surface area, gas permeability within porous hollow structures, and well-dispersed Pt NPs, which catalytically activate the sensor. Our study provides great promise for advancing surface catalytic reactions due to their exceptional surface area and gas permeability, paving the way for future applications. Pure and 0.18–13.2 at.% Fe-doped NiO nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and their gas sensing characteristics and microstructural evolution were investigated. The responses ((Rg − Ra)/Ra, where Rg is the resistance in gas and Ra is the resistance in air) to 5 ppm C2H5OH, toluene, benzene, p-xylene, HCHO, CO, H2, and NH3 at 350–500 ° C were significantly enhanced by Fe doping of the NiO nanofibers, while the responses of pure NiO nanofibers to all the analyte gases were very low ((Rg − Ra)/Ra = 0.07–0.78). In particular, the response to 100 ppm C2H5OH was enhanced up to 217.86 times by doping of NiO nanofibers with 3.04 at.% Fe. The variation in the gas response was closely dependent upon changes in the base resistance of the sensors in air. The enhanced gas response of Fe-doped NiO nanofibers was explained in relation to electronic sensitization, that is, the increase in the chemoresistive variation due to the decrease in the hole concentration induced by Fe doping. Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) supported on inorganic materials have attracted much attention in numerous research fields for their high catalytic performance. However, such SACs have been limited by the low metal loading, especially on different types of inorganic supports. Herein, a general approach is presented for preparing SACs on metallic, metal oxide, and perovskite nanosheet (NS) supports to reach a high metal loading of up to 3.94 wt%, by utilizing N‐doped graphene as a sacrificial template that spatially confines the single atoms (SAs). Specifically, the target support material precursors are adsorbed onto the SAs‐stabilized sacrificial template, followed by subsequent heat treatment to transfer the SAs to the support material and to remove the graphene layer. Pt SAs on oxide support exhibits little to no aggregation throughout >10 000 min of annealing at 275 °C, demonstrating high thermal stability, as also supported by ex situ post‐anneal electron microscopy and X‐ray absorption fine structure studies. As a proof‐of‐concept, Pt SACs on SnO2 NSs exhibit high catalytic activity toward chemiresistive sensing of acetone gas (response = 95.4 at 10 ppm, 7.6‐fold enhancement compared with pristine SnO2 NSs) and unprecedented stability under highly humid conditions (27.4% response deterioration at 95% relative humidity). Abstract: The preparation of two-dimensional monolayers of polymer particles over a large area was demonstrated via a facile solution process. Polymer microspheres were continuously self-assembled into a close-packed monolayer from a colloidal solution confined between two plates such that the top plate was carefully dragged at a constant velocity in the direction opposite that of the monolayer growth. In situ direct observation of the particle movement during the coating process confirmed that particle transport was directed toward the contact line of the solution meniscus by evaporation-induced convective flow. Sliding of the top plate apparently effectively counterbalanced the convective flow to provide the particles with a contact line for growth of a monolayer particle array. The influence of particle concentration, sliding speed of the top plate, and surface wettability of the bottom substrate were investigated and optimized. Monolayer particle arrays were successfully demonstrated as a template for the preparation of ZnO films with ordered hollow hemispherical structures. This approach is applicable to the fabrication of ordered structures of monodispersed particles composed of various materials over large areas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study reports the facile synthesis of highly conductive SrRuO3(SRO)–RuO2 composite nanofibre mats and their potential suitability for application in electrochemical capacitors as an active electrode material. SRO–RuO2/poly(vinyl acetate) composite nanofibre mats are electrospun on to a Au-coated SiO2/Si substrate and a Ti substrate, subsequently thermocompressed at 60°C, and calcined at various temperatures (from 350 to 850°C). The calcined SRO–RuO2 nanofibre mats exhibit porous morphologies and bundle shapes composed of multiple-fibrils with a nanoparticle diameter ranging from 20 to 50nm. Single SRO–RuO2 nanofibre and multiple SRO–RuO2 nanofibre mats show high electrical conductivity of 476 and 40.8Scm−1, respectively. Pseudocapacitors using SRO–RuO2 nanofibre mats calcined at 350°C exhibit a high specific capacitance of 192Fg−1 at a scan rate of 10mVs−1. The superior capacitance retention (83.4%) of the SRO–RuO2 nanofibre mats is maintained even at rapid scan rate of 1000mVs−1. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The present investigation aims to perceive the effect of exogenous ampelopsin treatment on salinity and heavy metal damaged soybean seedlings (Glycine max L.) in terms of physiochemical and molecular responses. Screening of numerous ampelopsin concentrations (0, 0.1, 1, 5, 10 and 25 μM) on soybean seedling growth indicated that the 1 μM concentration displayed an increase in agronomic traits. The study also determined how ampelopsin application could recover salinity and heavy metal damaged plants. Soybean seedlings were irrigated with water, 1.5% NaCl or 3 mM chosen heavy metals for 12 days. Our results showed that the application of ampelopsin raised survival of the 45-day old salinity and heavy metal stressed soybean plants. The ampelopsin treated plants sustained high chlorophyll, protein, amino acid, fatty acid, salicylic acid, sugar, antioxidant activities and proline contents, and displayed low hydrogen peroxide, lipid metabolism, and abscisic acid contents under unfavorable status. A gene expression survey revealed that ampelopsin application led to the improved expression of GmNAC109, GmFDL19, GmFAD3, GmAPX, GmWRKY12, GmWRKY142, and GmSAP16 genes, and reduced the expression of the GmERF75 gene. This study suggests irrigation with ampelopsin can alleviate plant damage and improve plant yield under stress conditions, especially those including salinity and heavy metals. Electrospinning–etching strategy was employed to synthesize Pt-loaded SnO 2 hollow microbelts (Pt_SnO 2 HBLs) based chemiresistive-type sensor demonstrating high sensitivity and selectivity toward acetone gas. This strategy overcomes a major hurdle toward achieving ubiquitous gas diffusion in electrospun structures, and provides highly porous thin-walled HBLs with large surface area and small crystallites. Challenges for ubiquitous diffusion of gas analytes into semiconducting metal oxides (SMOs) based sensing layers have necessitated the introduction of unprecedented synthesis techniques for thin, porous and high-performance gas sensing materials. In this work, electrospinning and calcination were employed to prepare unprecedented SiO 2 –SnO 2 core–shell microbelts (hereinafter referred to as SiO 2 @SnO 2 BLs) followed by etching away of SiO 2 in NaOH solution (pH 12) to achieve hollow SnO 2 BLs (hereinafter referred to as SnO 2 HBLs) with mean crystal size of 14.01 nm, large BET surface area (143.5 m2‧g–1), high porosity (mean pore size of 5.7 nm), and shell thickness of 58.3 ± 11.4 nm. Sensitization of SnO 2 HBLs with apoferritin-templated platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) enhanced their detection capability toward acetone. Response (defined as R a /R g , where R a and R g are sensor resistances in air and target gas, respectively) of Pt(0.12 %)_SnO 2 HBLs toward 2 ppm acetone was up to 7.8 times higher compared to that of pristine SnO 2 HBLs, and exhibited faster response (9.2 s). The Pt(0.12 %)_SnO 2 HBLs based sensor indicated a promising long-term stability, and outstanding repeatability of response (R a /R g = 93.7 ± 0.89) toward 25 cycles of 2 ppm acetone exposure in a humid environment of 90 % relative humidity. This performance could be attributed to the unique morphology of HBLs, sensitization effects of catalytic Pt NPs, and enlargement of the electron-depleted layer resulting from a Schottky barrier between Pt NPs and SnO 2 grains.
