This study discusses modes of appropriation of television genres for the constitution of new audiovisual dynamics in a digital context, based on performatic strategies of the Brazilian funk singer Pepita, who is known for her LGBTQþ activism. Based on a methodology that articulates studies about media genres and performance, we try to understand how television conventions and characteristics of YouTube and Instagram are appropriated for the constitution of what we call performances of empowerment. We conclude that Pepita's movements exemplify a broader phenomenon, associated to a complex articulation between audiovisual materialities and digital platforms, and to confluences between genre conventions and their transformations. We consider domino tilings of three-dimensional cubiculated manifolds with or without boundary, including subsets of Euclidean space and three-dimensional tori. In particular, we are interested in the connected components of the space of tilings of such regions under local moves. Building on the work of the third and fourth authors we allow two possible local moves, the flip and trit. These moves are considered with respect to two topological invariants, the twist and flux. The American National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) has recently released the report "Reproducibility and Replicability in Science." The report has prompted discussions within many disciplines about the extent of the current adoption of reproducibility and replicability, the challenges involved in publishing reproducible results as well as strategies for improving. We organized a panel at the IEEE VIS conference 2019 to start a discussion on the reproducibility challenges faced by the visualization community and how those challenges might be addressed. In this viewpoint, we summarize key findings of the NASEM report, the panel discussion, and outline a set of recommendations for the visualization community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scripts are widely used to design and run scientific experiments. Scripting languages are easy to learn and use, and they allow complex tasks to be specified and executed in fewer steps than with traditional programming languages. However, they also have important limitations for reproducibility and data management. As experiments are iteratively refined, it is challenging to reason about each experiment run (or trial), to keep track of the association between trials and experiment instances as well as the differences across trials, and to connect results to specific input data and parameters. Approaches have been proposed that address these limitations by collecting, managing, and analyzing the provenance of scripts. In this article, we survey the state of the art in provenance for scripts. We have identified the approaches by following an exhaustive protocol of forward and backward literature snowballing. Visual analytics systems can greatly help in the analysis of urban data allowing domain experts from academia and city governments to better understand cities, and thus enable better operations, informed planning and policies. Effectively designing these systems is challenging and requires bringing together methods from different domains. In this paper, we discuss the challenges involved in designing a visual analytics system to interactively explore large spatio-temporal data sets and give an overview of our research that combines visualization and data management to tackle these challenges. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth response of Mimosa bimucronata (DC) O. Kuntze seedlings in nursery conditions to inoculation with rhizobium strains previously selected using different substrates. An experimental design of randomized blocks with split plots was used, testing three substrates (pure organic-containing clay, sand and manure in 1: 1: 1 v: v: v ratio; organomineral mixed with 30% straw and sand with vermiculite in 1: 1 v: v) and four N sources (inoculation with strains BR 3461 and BR 3470, control with N fertilization and control without fertilization), totalizing 12 treatments. Height and stem diameter were evaluate after 90 days and shoot, root and nodules dry mass were evaluate after 120 days. Organomineral substrates provided better seedling growth. However, only organic-substrate with straw and sand with vermiculite showed positive responses of plants inoculated with BR3470 strain. The performance of the inoculated seedlings was not higher than that of seedlings fertilized with N. The rate of N applied stimulated nodulation rather than inhibit it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the image of Brazilian Indigenous minority groups as a figurehead in media discourse, which is based on racializing logics that celebrate historical performances of Indigeneity but minimize attention to the political activity and grassroots movements of the existing population. Using cultural studies as a starting point, this study draws on Diana Taylor's understanding of identity and on postcolonial thinker Homi Bhabha's theorizing on nation to conduct a reading of discourses and performances of Indigeneity as part of cultural memory. I propose an analysis of the limited scenarios allowed in this construction of a nation in Brazilian media outlets, which often claim there is political motivation for identity and are incapable of dealing with contemporary Indigenous groups. Overall, this analysis highlights the need to rethink the way we discuss ethnic identity so as to foster a larger dialogue about identity, heritage, and minority cultures in such a way that we avoid falling into a paradigm of modernization and acculturation when discussing ethnicity, and to promote better understanding of the different ongoing political and cultural movements in contemporary Brazil. This article addresses the use of media for self-representation by the Roma community in Spain, and their process of negotiating a local, national, and transnational ethnic and political identity. I focus on Voces gitanas: Rromane glasura/Roma Voices, a radio programme created in the city of Barcelona in 2005, using as its frame of reference cultural studies and urban theory, including David Harvey and Manuell Castells. Based on radio shows transmitted online and through FM radio, I discuss how the programme constitutes a tool for promoting culture, conducting political activism and discussing issues important to local communities. Through constant performances that translate as definitions of culture, I argue, the Roma community is able to restore and participate in the dialogue on self-determination and minority rights in a different sphere of discourse, both locally and globally, at the same time that they also influence their own (and others') understanding of their ethnic identity. The growing public interest in health- promotion, has called the attention of consumers for foods rich in antioxidants, combined with the practicality of the consumption of processed fruit juices. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify and evaluate the antioxidant capacity of phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid in fruits "in natura" and frozen pulps. The fruits "in natura" and frozen pulps from region of Lavras-MG, underwent quantification of phenolic compounds, ascorbic acid and the corresponding extracts acetonic-ethanolic and acetonic-methanolic. Their antioxidant activities were evaluated by DPPH and ABTS radical methods. The extract acetonic-methanolic was more effective to extract the antioxidant compounds from samples. Only frozen acerola pulps showed lower content of phenolic compounds in relation to fruit. For ascorbic acid, there was a reduction in the frozen pulp of acerola and guava. Acerola samples showed higher content of phenolic compounds, ascorbic acid and antioxidant activity compared to other fruits analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phenological studies can support actions of seed collection and recovery of degraded areas, contributing to the conservation of forest species. This study aimed to understand the timing of flowering and fruiting of 21 native tree species in fragmented area of Atlantic Forest in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Ninety one trees were monitored monthly, from January to December of 2011. Most species flowered in the late dry season and early rainy season, and presented a moderate negative correlation between flowering and photoperiod. There were two peaks of fruiting: March-April to zoochoric species and September-October for not zoochoric species, with positive correlation between rainfall and fruiting of zoochoric species. There was a high incidence of pathogens in fruits, affecting the seed production by Machaerium hirtum, Melanoxylon brauna, Machaerium brasiliense and Psidium guineense. Other species showed low fruit production, as Andira sp., Swartzia oblata, Guarea guidonea, and Enterolobium glaziovii. The timing of flowering and fruiting among individuals was low for most species. The lack of phenology research of most species studied (52%) reinforced the need of such studies in this region. Abstract: The Propp Machine is a deterministic process that simulates a random walk. Instead of distributing chips randomly, each position makes the chips move according to the walk’s possible steps in a fixed order. A random walk is called Proppian if at each time at each position the number of chips differs from the expected value by at most a constant, independent of time or the initial configuration of chips. The simple walk where the possible steps are 1 or each with probability is Proppian, with constant approximately 2.29. The equivalent simple walks on are also Proppian. Recently, meta-directories have begun to be used for unifying and centrally managing disparate directories/devices within an enterprise. Meta-directories must address many problems that have been extensively studied in the area of data integration, such as data cleaning and schema integration. However, some new challenges arise. Whereas previous data integration systems have focused on read-only queries, update support forms a major component of meta-directories. Network devices performing time-critical tasks should not be interrupted (queried) too often, and thus meta-directories must materialize the integrated data. At the same time, network devices must sometimes be managed independently from the meta-directory. Thus, meta-directories must ensure that data remains consistent across devices and the integrated view in the presence of updates to both devices and integrated view. In addition, existing directory servers have a number of limitations. For example, LDAP directories lack active functionality, and have extremely weak typing and transactional support. This paper discusses the MetaComm meta-directory: its implementation, how it addresses data integration issues and LDAP limitations, and our experiences in building a real product. Large‐scale ecological restoration programs across the world involve a voluminous demand for native seeds of diverse native plant species. In this article, we explore how institutional systems have operated and impacted native seed supply in Brazil. Native seed supply for restoration is essentially a community‐based activity which faces broad barriers to operating within regulations because of requirements for excessive and costly technical documentation, scarcity of seed laboratories, and lack of instructions for native seed quality testing. Although decentralized seed networks have stimulated arrangements for local organizations to promote seed supply, policies constrain the development of local capacities and the ongoing sustainability of these organizations. These conditions have resulted in a vast network of informal collectors and producers who are largely "invisible" and unknown to the regulatory authorities. Policies have decentralized responsibilities from the state without devolving decision‐making power to the multiple stakeholders engaged in policy elaboration. The policies maintain the centralized regulation of native seed supply. After examining Brazilian seed networks' experiences and conducting discussions with stakeholders and experts, we suggest adapting the current regulations to more local level contexts, encompassing the following strategies: (1) ensuring native seed origin and identity; (2) relaxation of the laboratory accreditation process for native seed quality assurance; (3) fostering seed markets for restoration; (4) research to provide technological innovation; (5) supporting local, diverse, and small seed‐based businesses. Mortality from external causes is considered a serious economic, social and public health problem. The main cause of death in the world is cardiorespiratory arrest, in Brazil this is mainly due to the lack of knowledge of basic life support. The victim's care and evaluation should be performed quickly and effectively, which will influence the survival and presence of sequelae. In this way, the importance of knowledge and practical implementation of basic life support in the evaluation of obtaining the license to drive vehicles, considering that these future drivers will be the potential audience that will witness these accidents and may start the aid more quickly, and with the appropriate knowledge, more effectively. Abstract: Advances in technology coupled with the availability of low‐cost sensors have resulted in the continuous generation of large time series from several sources. In order to visually explore and compare these time series at different scales, analysts need to execute online analytical processing (OLAP) queries that include constraints and group‐by's at multiple temporal hierarchies. Effective visual analysis requires these queries to be interactive. However, while existing OLAP cube‐based structures can support interactive query rates, the exponential memory requirement to materialize the data cube is often unsuitable for large data sets. Moreover, none of the recent space‐efficient cube data structures allow for updates. Thus, the cube must be re‐computed whenever there is new data, making them impractical in a streaming scenario. We propose Time Lattice, a memory‐efficient data structure that makes use of the implicit temporal hierarchy to enable interactive OLAP queries over large time series. Time Lattice is a subset of a fully materialized cube and is designed to handle fast updates and streaming data. We perform an experimental evaluation which shows that the space efficiency of the data structure does not hamper its performance when compared to the state of the art. In collaboration with signal processing and acoustics research scientists, we use the Time Lattice data structure to design the Noise Profiler, a web‐based visualization framework that supports the analysis of noise from cities. Art historians have traditionally used physical light boxes to prepare exhibits or curate collections. On a light box, they can place slides or printed images, move the images around at will, group them as desired, and visual-ly compare them. The transition to digital images has rendered this workflow obsolete. Now, art historians lack well-designed, unified interactive software tools that effectively support the operations they perform with physi-cal light boxes. To address this problem, we designed ARIES (ARt Image Exploration Space), an interactive image manipulation system that enables the exploration and organization of fine digital art. The system allows images to be compared in multiple ways, offering dynamic overlays analogous to a physical light box, and sup-porting advanced image comparisons and feature-matching functions, available through computational image processing. Focused crawlers are effective tools for applications requiring a high number of pages belonging to a specific topic. Several strategies for implementing these crawlers have been proposed in the literature, which aim to improve crawling efficiency by increasing the number of relevant pages retrieved while avoiding non-relevant pages. However, an important aspect of these crawlers has been largely overlooked: the selection of the seed pages that serve as the starting points for a crawl. In this paper, we show that the seeds can greatly influence the performance of crawlers, and propose a new framework for automatically finding seeds. We describe a system that implements this framework and show, through a detailed experimental evaluation, that by providing crawlers a seed set that is large and varied, they not only obtain higher harvest rates but also an improved topic coverage. The traffic infrastructure greatly impacts the quality of life in urban environments. To optimize this infrastructure, engineers and decision makers need to explore traffic data. In doing so, they face two important challenges: the sparseness of speed sensors that cover only a limited number of road segments, and the complexity of traffic patterns they need to analyze. In this paper we take a first step at addressing these challenges. We use New York City (NYC) taxi trips as sensors to capture traffic information. While taxis provide substantial coverage of the city, the data captured about taxi trips contain neither the location of taxis at frequent intervals nor their routes. We propose an efficient traffic model to derive speed and direction information from these data, and show that it provides reliable estimates. Using these estimates, we define a time-varying vector-valued function on a directed graph representing the road network, and adapt techniques used for vector fields to visualize the traffic dynamics. We demonstrate the utility of our technique in several case studies that reveal interesting mobility patterns in NYC's traffic. These patterns were validated by experts from NYC's Department of Transportation and the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission, who also provided interesting insights into these results. Over the last 20 years, visualization courses have been developed and offered at universities around the world. Many of these courses use established visualization libraries and tools (e.g. VTK, ParaView, AVS, VisIt) as a way to provide students a hands-on experience, allowing them to prototype and explore different visualization techniques. In this paper, we describe our experiences using VisTrails as a platform to teach scientific visualization. VisTrails is an open-source system that was designed to support exploratory computational tasks such as visualization and data analysis. Unlike previous scientific workflow and visualization systems, VisTrails provides a comprehensive provenance management infrastructure. We discuss how different features of the system, and in particular, the provenance information have changed the dynamics of the Scientific Visualization course we offer at the University of Utah.
