Abstract

The article describes promising research directions in the database community, reporting on current themes and challenges. Particular focus is given to what has changed in the field since 2017, like technological breakthroughs in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Other topics discussed include data science, which is defined as the processes and systems that enable the extraction of knowledge or insights from data in various forms, dealing with the increasingly important social challenge of data governance, and the need to rethink architecture for cloud data services.
