The properties of high-K isomers have been investigated by measuring γ rays from a source of the 31-year 178Hfm2 isomer and from the decay of implanted 178, 179Lu beams. Low-intensity transitions have been identified in the decay of 178Hfm2, demonstrating a consistent extension of K-hindrance systematics to higher multipolarities, and elucidating the spin-dependence of the mixing between the two Kπ = 8- bands. A search is underway for new isomers in 178, 179Lu and the preliminary results of the analysis are reported. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A general technique that corrects -ray gated decay-curve data for detector pulse pile-up is presented. The method includes corrections for non-zero time-resolution and energy-threshold effects in addition to a special treatment of saturating events due to cosmic rays. This technique is verified through a Monte Carlo simulation and experimental data using radioactive beams of implanted at the center of the -ray spectrometer at the ISAC facility at TRIUMF in Vancouver, Canada. The -decay half-life of obtained from counting 1809-keV -ray photopeaks emitted by the daughter was determined to be following a correction for detector pulse pile-up. This result is in excellent agreement with the result of a previous measurement that employed direct counting and demonstrates the feasibility of high-precision -decay half-life measurements through the use of high-purity germanium -ray detectors. The technique presented here, while motivated by superallowed-Fermi decay studies, is general and can be used for all half-life determinations (e.g. -, -, X-ray, fission) in which a -ray photopeak is used to select the decays of a particular isotope. Abstract: The isotope separator and accelerator (ISAC) facility located at the TRIUMF laboratory in Vancouver, Canada, is one of the world’s most advanced isotope separator on-line-type radioactive ion beam facilities. An extensive γ-ray spectroscopy programme at ISAC is centred around two major research facilities: (i) the 8π γ-ray spectrometer for β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy experiments with the low-energy beams from ISAC-I, and (ii) the next generation TRIUMF-ISAC gamma-ray escape suppressed spectrometer (TIGRESS) for in-beam experiments with the accelerated radioactive-ion beams. An overview of these facilities and recent results from the diverse programme of nuclear structure and fundamental interaction studies they support is presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Two interacting, strongly-deformed triaxial (TSD) bands have been identified in the nucleus 163Tm. This is the first time that interacting TSD bands have been observed in an element other than the Lu nuclei, where wobbling bands have been previously identified. The observed TSD bands in 163Tm appear to be associated with particle–hole excitations, rather than wobbling. Tilted-axis cranking (TAC) calculations reproduce all experimental observables of these bands reasonably well and also provide an explanation for the presence of wobbling bands in the Lu nuclei, and their absence in the Tm isotopes. Abstract: Methods of optimizing the performance of an array of Compton-suppressed, segmented HPGe clover detectors have been developed which rely on the physical position sensitivity of both the HPGe crystals and the Compton-suppression shields. These relatively simple analysis procedures promise to improve the precision of experiments with the TRIUMF-ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape-Suppressed Spectrometer (TIGRESS). Suppression schemes will improve the efficiency and peak-to-total ratio of TIGRESS for high γ-ray multiplicity events by taking advantage of the 20-fold segmentation of the Compton-suppression shields, while the use of different summing schemes will improve results for a wide range of experimental conditions. The benefits of these methods are compared for many γ-ray energies and multiplicities using a GEANT4 simulation, and the optimal physical configuration of the TIGRESS array under each set of conditions is determined. Abstract: Tests of the performance of a 32-fold segmented HPGe clover detector coupled to a 20-fold segmented Compton-suppression shield, which form a prototype element of the TRIUMF-ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape-Suppressed Spectrometer (TIGRESS), have been made. Peak-to-total ratios and relative efficiencies have been measured for a variety of -ray energies. These measurements were used to validate a GEANT4 simulation of the TIGRESS detectors, which was then used to create a simulation of the full 12-detector array. Predictions of the expected performance of TIGRESS are presented. These predictions indicate that TIGRESS will be capable, for single 1MeV rays, of absolute detection efficiencies of 17% and 9.4%, and peak-to-total ratios of 54% and 61% for the “high-efficiency” and “optimized peak-to-total” configurations of the array, respectively. Abstract: Reports that incident photons near 10keV can induce the emission of gamma rays with concomitant energy release from the 31-year isomer of 178Hf challenge established models of nuclear and atomic physics. In order to provide a direct and independent assessment of these claims, a multi-detector system was designed as a specialized research tool. The YSU miniball is unique in its combination of performance characteristics, compact size and portability, enabling it to be easily transported to and placed within the confines of beamline hutches at synchrotron radiation sources. Monochromatic synchrotron radiation was used in the most recent studies from which evidence of prompt triggering was claimed, suggesting similar sites for independent tests of these results. The miniball array consists of six high-efficiency BGO scintillators coupled with a single 65% Ge detector and provides time-resolved gamma-ray calorimetry rather than purely spectroscopic data. The need to record high detected folds from the array (up to seven-fold gamma coincidences) makes this system different in practice from standard spectroscopic arrays for which data is typically restricted to triples or lower folds. Here the system requirements and design are discussed, as well as system performance as characterized using the well-known natural decay cascades of 178m2Hf. This serves as the foundation for subsequent high-sensitivity searches for low-energy triggering of gamma emission from this isomer. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The TRIUMF-ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape-Suppressed Spectrometer (TIGRESS) will consist of twelve units of four high-purity germanium (HPGe) crystals in a common cryostat. The outer contacts of each crystal will be divided into four quadrants and two lateral segments for a total of eight outer contacts. The performance of a prototype HPGe four-crystal unit has been investigated. Integrated noise spectra for all contacts were measured. Energy resolutions, relative efficiencies for both individual crystals and for the entire unit, and peak-to-total ratios were measured with point-like sources. Position-dependent performance was measured by moving a collimated source across the face of the detector. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Sensitivity to the locations of -ray interactions within a 32-fold segmented clover-type HPGe detector has been investigated through Compton scattering of -rays from a collimated source. A mean position sensitivity of 0.44mm at an energy of 373keV is deduced by comparing the average pulse shapes for net charge collecting signals, as well as transient induced signals in neighbouring contacts, from 1007 pairs of three-dimensionally localized interaction points. The reconstruction of individual event locations based on a comparison with the measured set of basis waveforms is presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
