Context. The recent claims of g-mode detection have restarted the search for these potentially extremely important modes. These claims can be reassessed in view of the different data sets available from the SoHO instruments and ground-based instruments. Aims. We produce a new calibration of the GOLF data with a more consistent p-mode amplitude and a more consistent time shift correction compared to the time series used in the past. Methods. The calibration of 22 yr of GOLF data is done with a simpler approach that uses only the predictive radial velocity of the SoHO spacecraft as a reference. Using p modes, we measure and correct the time shift between ground- and space-based instruments and the GOLF instrument. Results. The p-mode velocity calibration is now consistent to within a few percent with other instruments. The remaining time shifts are within ±5 s for 99.8% of the time series. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The object HD43587Aa is a G0V star observed during the 145-day LRa03 run of the COnvection, ROtation and planetary Transits space mission (CoRoT), for which complementary High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) spectra with S/N > 300 were also obtained. Its visual magnitude is 5.71, and its effective temperature is close to 5950 K. It has a known companion in a highly eccentric orbit and is also coupled with two more distant companions. Aims. We undertake a preliminary investigation of the internal structure of HD43587Aa. Methods. We carried out a seismic analysis of the star, using maximum likelihood estimators and Markov chainMonte Carlo methods. Results. We established the first table of the eigenmode frequencies, widths, and heights for HD43587Aa. The star appears to have a mass and a radius slightly larger than the Sun, and is slightly older (5.6 Gyr). Two scenarios are suggested for the geometry of the star: either its inclination angle is very low, or the rotation velocity of the star is very low. Conclusions. A more detailed study of the rotation and of the magnetic and chromospheric activity for this star is needed, and will be the subject of a further study. New high resolution spectrometric observations should be performed for at least several months in duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar analogues are important stars to study for understanding the properties of the Sun. Combined with seismic and spectroscopic analysis, evolutionary modelling becomes a powerful method to characterize stellar intrinsic parameters, such as mass, radius, metallicity and age. However, these characteristics, relevant for other aspects of astrophysics or exoplanetary system physics, for example, are difficult to obtain with high precision and/or accuracy. The goal of this study is to characterize the two solar analogues, HD 42618 and HD 43587, observed by CoRoT. In particular, we aim to infer their precise mass, radius and age, using evolutionary modelling constrained by spectroscopic, photometric and seismic analysis. These stars show evidence of being older than the Sun but with a relatively large lithium abundance. We present the seismic analysis of HD 42618, and the modelling of the two solar analogues, HD 42618 and HD 43587 using the cestam stellar evolution code. Models were computed to reproduce the spectroscopic (effective temperature and metallicity) and seismic (mode frequency) data, and the luminosity of the stars, based on Gaia parallaxes. We infer very similar values of mass and radius for both stars compared with the literature, within the uncertainties, and we reproduce correctly the seismic constraints. The modelling shows that HD 42618 is slightly less massive and older than the Sun, and that HD 43587 is more massive and older than the Sun, in agreement with previous results. Context. One of the most enigmatic phenomena related to solar activity is the so-called Maunder minimum phase. It consists in the lowest sunspot count ever registered for the Sun and has not been confirmed for other stars to date. Since the spectroscopic observations of stellar activity at the Mount Wilson Observatory, the solar analog HD 43587 has shown a very low and apparently invariant activity level, which makes it a Maunder minimum candidate. Aims. We aim to analyze the chromospheric activity evolution of HD 43587 and its evolutive status, with the intention of unraveling the reasons for this low and flat activity. Methods. We used an activity measurements dataset available in the literature, and computed the S-index from HARPS and NARVAL spectra to infer a cycle period. Additionally, we analyzed the CoRoT light curve of HD 43587, and applied gyrochronology and activity calibrations to determine its rotation period. Finally, based on an evolutionary model and the inferred rotation period, we used the EULAG-MHD code to perform global MHD simulations of HD 43587 to get some insight into its dynamo process. Results. We confirm the almost flat activity profile, with a cycle period Pcyc = 10.44 ± 3.03 yr deduced from the S-index time series, and a long-term trend that might be a period of more than 50 yr. It was impossible to define a rotation period from the light curve, however gyrochronology and activity calibrations allow us to infer an indirect estimate of ¯Prot = 22.6 ± 1.9 P ¯ rot = 22.6 ± 1.9 $ \overline{P}_{\mathrm{rot}} = 22.6 \pm 1.9 $ d. Furthermore, the MHD simulations confirm an oscillatory dynamo with a cycle period in good agreement with the observations and a low level of surface magnetic activity. Conclusions. We conclude that this object might be experiencing a "natural" decrease in magnetic activity as a consequence of its age. The equator-to-pole radius difference (Δ r= R− R) is a fundamental property of our star, and understanding it will enrich future solar and stellar dynamical models. The solar oblateness (Δ) corresponds to the excess ratio of the equatorial solar radius ( R) to the polar radius ( R), which is of great interest for those working in relativity and different areas of solar physics. Δ r is known to be a rather small quantity, where a positive value of about 8 milli-arcseconds (mas) is suggested by previous measurements and predictions. The Picard space mission aimed to measure Δ r with a precision better than 0.5 mas. The Solar Diameter Imager and Surface Mapper (SODISM) onboard Picard was a Ritchey-Chrétien telescope that took images of the Sun at several wavelengths. The SODISM measurements of the solar shape were obtained during special roll maneuvers of the spacecraft by 30° steps. They have produced precise determinations of the solar oblateness at 782.2 nm. After correcting measurements for optical distortion and for instrument temperature trend, we found a solar equator-to-pole radius difference at 782.2 nm of 7.9±0.3 mas (5.7±0.2 km) at one σ. This measurement has been repeated several times during the first year of the space-borne observations, and we have not observed any correlation between oblateness and total solar irradiance variations. The Solar Diameter Imager and Surface Mapper (SODISM) onboard the Picard space mission provides wide-field images of the photosphere and chromosphere of the Sun in five narrow bandpasses centered at 215.0, 393.37, 535.7, 607.1, and 782.2 nm. The Picard spacecraft was successfully launched on 15 June 2010 into a Sun-synchronous dawn–dusk orbit. The Picard space mission represents a European asset in collecting solar observations useful to improve Earth climatic models. The scientific payload consists of the SODISM imager and of two radiometers, SOlar VAriability Picard (SOVAP) and PREcision MOnitor Sensor (PREMOS), which measure the Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) and part of the Solar Spectral Irradiance (SSI). The SODISM telescope continuously monitors solar activity from the middle ultraviolet to the near infrared spectral ranges and produces solar images that feed SSI reconstruction models. Further, SODISM probes the solar interior via a helioseismic analysis of the solar disc and limb images at 535.7 nm, and via astrometric investigations at the limb. The latter allows us to deduce the spectral dependence of the solar limb profile, and the asphericity of the Sun. Furthermore, SODISM data taken during the transit of Venus allow a determination of the absolute value of the solar diameter. We present a detailed abundance study based on spectroscopic data obtained with HARPS of two solar-analogue main targets for the asteroseismology programme of the CoRoT satellite: HD42618 and HD43587. The atmospheric parameters and chemical composition are accurately determined through a fully differential analysis with respect to the Sun observed with the same instrumental set-up. Several sources of systematic errors largely cancel out with this approach, which allows us to narrow down the 1-σ error bars to typically 20 K in effective temperature, 0.04 dex in surface gravity, and less than 0.05 dex in the elemental abundances. Although HD42618 fulfils many requirements for being classified as a solar twin, its slight deficiency in metals and its possibly younger age indicate that, strictly speaking, it does not belong to this class of objects. On the other hand, HD43587 is slightly more massive and evolved. In addition, marked differences are found in the amount of lithium present in the photospheres of these two stars, which might reveal different mixing properties in their interiors. These results will put tight constraints on the forthcoming theoretical modelling of their solar-like oscillations and contribute to increase our knowledge of the fundamental parameters and internal structure of stars similar to our Sun. Solar flares presumably have an impact on the deepest layers of the solar atmosphere and yet the observational evidence for such an impact is scarce. Using ten years of measurements of the Na D1 and Na D2 Fraunhofer lines, measured by GOLF onboard SOHO, we show that this photospheric line is indeed affected by flares. The effect of individual flares is hidden by solar oscillations, but a statistical analysis based on conditional averaging reveals a clear signature. Although GOLF can only probe one single wavelength at a time, we show that both wings of the Na line can nevertheless be compared. The varying line asymmetry can be interpreted as an upward plasma motion from the lower solar atmosphere during the peak of the flare, followed by a downward motion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar gravity modes (or g modes)—oscillations of the solar interior on which buoyancy acts as the restoring force—have the potential to provide unprecedented inference on the structure and dynamics of the solar core, inference that is not possible with the well-observed acoustic modes (or p modes). The relative high amplitude of the g-mode eigenfunctions in the core and the evanesence of the modes in the convection zone make the modes particularly sensitive to the physical and dynamical conditions in the core. Owing to the existence of the convection zone, the g modes have very low amplitudes at photospheric levels, which makes the modes extremely hard to detect. In this article, we review the current state of play regarding attempts to detect g modes. We review the theory of g modes, including theoretical estimation of the g-mode frequencies, amplitudes and damping rates. Then we go on to discuss the techniques that have been used to try to detect g modes. We review results in the literature, and finish by looking to the future, and the potential advances that can be made—from both data and data-analysis perspectives—to give unambiguous detections of individual g modes. The review ends by concluding that, at the time of writing, there is indeed a consensus amongst the authors that there is currently no undisputed detection of solar g modes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was conducted to identify early predictors of the total cost of inflammatory arthritis (IA). One hundred and eighty patients affected by undifferentiated arthritis (UA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were included in the French Very Early rheumatoid Arthritis (VErA) cohort between 1998 and 2001. Health economic data for 2003 were collected using a patient self-questionnaire. Results were analysed in terms of direct, indirect and total costs in 2003 euros (2003€) for the population as a whole and in diagnostic subgroups. A payor perspective (the French National Health Insurance, in this case) was adopted. Multiple linear regression models were used to identify predictors of total cost from among the criteria assessed on recruitment. Results of the study showed that for the study population as a whole, the mean total cost was €4700 per patient. The costs attributable to the RA and UA sub-groups were €5928 and €2424 per patient, respectively. In a univariate analysis, certain parameters were significantly correlated with a higher cost of illness. In the multivariate analysis, some of these parameters were further identified as being predictive of higher cost. Two strong significant, early predictors of total cost were identified: higher pain ( P = 0.002) and the presence of rheumatoid factor ( P = 0.004). In the RA sub-group, lower grip strength of the dominant hand ( P = 0.039) was another predictor of the illness’s subsequent economic impact. In conclusion, our data show that simple clinical and laboratory parameters can be used early in the course of IA to predict the condition’s impact on healthcare budgets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the results of the latest solarFLAG hare-and-hounds exercise, which was concerned with testing methods for extraction of frequencies of low-degree solar p modes from data collected by Sun-as-a-star observations. We have used the new solarFLAG simulator, which includes the effects of correlated mode excitation and correlations with background noise, to make artificial time-series data that mimic Doppler velocity observations of the Sun-as-a-star. The correlations give rise to asymmetry of mode peaks in the frequency power spectrum. 10 members of the group (the hounds) applied their ‘peak-bagging’ codes to a 3456-d data set, and the estimated mode frequencies were returned to the hare (who was WJC) for comparison. Analysis of the results reveals a systematic bias in the estimated frequencies of modes above . The bias is negative, meaning the estimated frequencies systematically underestimate the input frequencies. We identify two sources that are the dominant contributions to the frequency bias. Both sources involve failure to model accurately subtle aspects of the observed power spectral density in the part (window) of the frequency power spectrum that is being fitted. One source of bias arises from a failure to account for the power spectral density coming from all those modes whose frequencies lie outside the fitting windows. The other source arises from a failure to account for the power spectral density of the weak and 5 modes, which are often ignored in Sun-as-a-star analysis. We report on results from the first solar Fitting at Low-Angular degree Group (solar FLAG) hare-and-hounds exercise. The group is concerned with the development of methods for extracting the parameters of low- l solar p-mode data (‘peak bagging’), collected by Sun-as-a-star observations. Accurate and precise estimation of the fundamental parameters of the p modes is a vital pre-requisite of all subsequent studies. Nine members of the FLAG (the ‘hounds’) fitted an artificial 3456-d data set. The data set was made by the ‘hare’ (WJC) to simulate full-disc Doppler velocity observations of the Sun. The rotational frequency splittings of the l= 1, 2 and 3 modes were the first parameter estimates chosen for scrutiny. Significant differences were uncovered at l= 2 and 3 between the fitted splittings of the hounds. Evidence is presented that suggests this unwanted bias had its origins in several effects. The most important came from the different way in which the hounds modelled the visibility ratio of the different rotationally split components. Our results suggest that accurate modelling of the ratios is vital to avoid the introduction of significant bias in the estimated splittings. The objective of this study was to determine the diagnostic and prognostic values of antiglucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI) antibodies in patients with very early arthritis. Anti-GPI antibodies were measured by ELISA using purified GPI from rabbit muscle in: (i) 383 sera from healthy blood donors ( n = 120), well-established rheumatoid arthritis (RA) ( n = 99) and non-RA differentiated arthritis (NRADA) ( n = 164) patients; (ii) 195 sera obtained from community-recruited patients with very early inflammatory arthritis (VErA cohort) that were studied for 1 year and classified as having RA ( n = 116), NRADA ( n = 41), and undifferentiated arthritis (UA) ( n = 38) after the follow-up period. The criterion for severity was the progression of radiographic damage. Prevalence of anti-GPI antibodies was significantly higher in well-established RA patients (45·4%) compared to healthy subjects (2·5%). Anti-GPI antibodies were also present in sera from NRADA: systemic lupus erythematosus 53%, polymyositis 45·4%, adult-onset Still's disease 44%, systemic sclerosis 42·8%, spondylarthropathies 25% and primary Sjögren ’s syndrome 5·8%. No significant association was found between the presence of anti-GPI antibodies and the 3 diagnostic groups from the VErA cohort. No correlation was observed between anti-GPI and autoantibodies usually associated with RA. Anti-GPI antibodies were not predictive of radiological progression in patients with very early arthritis. Thus, anti-GPI antibodies are not useful for discriminating RA from non-RA rheumatic diseases and do not constitute a predictive factor of structural damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the modem era of helioseismology we have a wealth of high-quality data available, e.g., more than 6 years of data collected by the various instruments on board the SOHO mission, and an even more extensive ground-based set of observations covering a full solar cycle. Thanks to this effort a detailed picture of the internal rotation of the Sun has been constructed. In this paper we present some of the actions that should be done to improve our knowledge of the inner rotation profile discussed during the workshop organized at Saclay on June 2003 on this topic. In particular we will concentrate on the extraction of the rotational frequency splittings of low- and medium-degree modes and their influence on the rotation of deeper layers. Furthermore, for the first time a full set of individual /m/-component rotational splittings is computed for modes l ≤ 4 and 1 < v < 2 mHz, opening new studies on the latitudinal dependence of the rotation rate in the radiative interior. It will also be shown that these splittings have the footprints of the differential rotation of the convective zone which can be extremely useful to study the differential rotation of other stars where only these low-degree modes will be available.
