Aim: Faecal incontinence (FI) is a prevalent issue which can have a detrimental impact on the patient's quality of life. Current international guidelines lack strong treatment recommendations due to few studies in the field, in combination with the heterogeneity in outcome reporting. To address this, a core outcome set (COS) is proposed to standardize outcome reporting in FI studies, facilitating meta‐analyses and enhancing therapeutic recommendations. Through several steps outlined by COMET 'what' to measure will be determined prior to determining 'how' to measure these outcomes. This systematic review aims to identify 'what' outcomes have been used in FI intervention studies so far in adult patients as a starting phase for the development of a future COS for FI. Method: Medline, Embase and the Cochrane library were searched to identify all outcomes reported in comparative effectiveness trials assessing one or more treatment option in adult patients suffering from FI. The outcomes were categorized according to the Core Outcome Measurement in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) taxonomy to standardize outcome terminology, assess completeness, and inform subsequent steps in COS development. Results: A total of 109 studies were included, which revealed 51 unique outcomes classified into 38 domains within four core areas. On average four outcomes were reported per study (range 1–11). The most commonly reported outcomes were "severity of FI" (83%), "quality of life" (64%), "number of FI episodes" (40%), "anorectal motor function" (39%), and "frequency of bowel movements" (16%). Conclusion: This systematic review offers an overview of outcomes reported in FI studies, highlighting the heterogeneity between studies. Introduction: In the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD), there is empirical support for both dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and schema therapy (ST); these treatments have never been compared directly. This study examines whether either of them is more effective than the other in treating patients with BPD. Methods: In this randomized, parallel-group, rater-blind clinical trial, outpatients aged between 18 and 65 years with a primary diagnosis of BPD were recruited in a tertiary outpatient treatment center (Lübeck, Germany). Participants were randomized to DBT or ST with one individual and one group session per week over 1.5 years. The primary outcome was the BPD symptom severity assessed with the mean score of the Borderline Personality Disorder Severity Index at 1-year naturalistic follow-up. Results: Between November 26, 2014, and December 14, 2018, we enrolled 164 patients (mean age = 33.7 [SD = 10.61] years). Of these, 81 (49.4%) were treated with ST and 83 (50.6%) with DBT, overall, 130 (79.3%) were female. Intention-to-treat analysis with generalized linear mixed models did not show a significant difference at 1-year naturalistic follow-up between DBT and ST for the BPDSI total score (mean difference 3.32 [95% CI: –0.58–7.22], p = 0.094, d = −24 [–0.69; 0.20]) with lower scores for DBT. Pre-to-follow-up effect sizes were large in both groups (DBT: d = 2.45 [1.88–3.02], ST: d = 1.78 [1.26–2.29]). Conclusion: Patients in both treatment groups showed substantial improvements indicating that even severely affected patients with BPD and various comorbid disorders can be treated successfully with DBT and ST. An additional non-inferiority trial is needed to show if both treatments are equally effective. This article discusses a study that used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze blood flow in a rabbit model during different cannulation strategies for extracorporeal circulation (ECC) in cardiac surgery. The study found that the blood flow in the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and descending aorta was higher during antegrade perfusion compared to retrograde perfusion. However, there were no significant differences in cerebral or visceral perfusion between the two strategies. This tutorial is designed for speech scientists familiar with the R programming language who wish to construct experiment interfaces in R. We begin by discussing some of the benefits of building experiment interfaces in R—including R's existing tools for speech data analysis, platform independence, suitability for web-based testing, and the fact that R is open source. We explain basic concepts of reactive programming in R, and we apply these principles by detailing the development of two sample experiments. The first of these experiments comprises a speech production task in which participants are asked to read words with different emotions. The second sample experiment involves a speech perception task, in which participants listen to recorded speech and identify the emotion the talker expressed with forced-choice questions and confidence ratings. Throughout this tutorial, we introduce the new R package speechcollectr, which provides functions uniquely suited to web-based speech data collection. The package streamlines the code required for speech experiments by providing functions for common tasks like documenting participant consent, collecting participant demographic information, recording audio, checking the adequacy of a participant's microphone or headphones, and presenting audio stimuli. Loneliness may exacerbate poor health outcomes particularly among cancer survivors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Little is known about the risk factors of loneliness among cancer survivors. We evaluated the risk factors of loneliness in the context of COVID-19 pandemic-related prevention behaviors and lifestyle/psychosocial factors among cancer survivors. Cancer survivors (n = 1471) seen at Huntsman Cancer Institute completed a survey between August–September 2020 evaluating health behaviors, medical care, and psychosocial factors including loneliness during COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were classified into two groups: 'lonely' (sometimes, usually, or always felt lonely in past month) and 'non-lonely' (never or rarely felt lonely in past month). 33% of cancer survivors reported feeling lonely in the past month. Multivariable logistic regression showed female sex, not living with a spouse/partner, poor health status, COVID-19 pandemic-associated lifestyle factors including increased alcohol consumption and marijuana/CBD oil use, and psychosocial stressors such as disruptions in daily life, less social interaction, and higher perceived stress and financial stress were associated with feeling lonely as compared to being non-lonely (all p < 0.05). A significant proportion of participants reported loneliness, which is a serious health risk among vulnerable populations, particularly cancer survivors. Modifiable risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyle behaviors and psychosocial stress were associated with loneliness. These results highlight the need to screen for unhealthy lifestyle factors and psychosocial stressors to identify cancer survivors at increased risk of loneliness and to develop effective management strategies. Precarious economic conditions, low pay, layoffs, and dwindling job security motivated journalists to organize in record numbers in the 2010s and 2020s. Cohen and De Peuter's 2020 research on newsworkers' motives and organizing strategies in digital newsrooms finds that economic, political, and cultural factors play a role. Pay equity, a more diverse and inclusive newsroom, and a voice in editorial and strategic decision-making are often cited as arguments for union membership. This monograph asks how newsworkers assess the effect of unionization and guild membership on their work, working conditions, and culture. Interviews with 45 journalists in 16 U.S. newsrooms with unions, both established and recently organized, suggest that several goals, such as pay equity, diversity, and inclusion, have not been achieved. Nevertheless, the act of organizing and the managerial work accomplished by union leadership in the newsroom is creating both institutional change and opportunity. A parallel organizational culture is emerging that mitigates poor leadership and human resource management and serves as training ground for a new class of journalists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is an investigation into Japanese kimono academies. These are organizations that offer classes on kimono wearing, known as kitsuke in Japanese. While common in Japan since the 1970s, these academies have rarely featured in scholarship. These academies present a paradox, increasing in popularity even as the prevalence of wearing the kimono has declined since the 1970s, with sales of kimono steadily decreasing. This article demonstrates how these academies have established themselves by selling more than just kimono-wearing classes. First, they market themselves by promising to inculcate a refined, elegant, and cultured "Japanese femininity" through the kimono. This article explores how this marketing strategy is particularly successful among middle-aged women rather than young women and unpicks the connections between age, gender, class, and a sense of feminine "Japaneseness." Second, this article explores the ways in which kimono academies mostly portray themselves as cultural institutions rather than businesses. I argue that this points to a broader discomfort in Japanese society with the commercialization of traditional knowledge and anxiety surrounding the relationship between business and culture. Litter decomposition represents a major path for atmospheric carbon influx into Arctic soils, thereby controlling below‐ground carbon accumulation. Yet, little is known about how tundra litter decomposition varies with microenvironmental conditions, hindering accurate projections of tundra soil carbon dynamics with future climate change. Over 14 months, we measured landscape‐scale decomposition of two contrasting standard litter types (Green tea and Rooibos tea) in 90 plots covering gradients of micro‐climate and ‐topography, vegetation cover and traits, and soil characteristics in Western Greenland. We used the tea bag index (TBI) protocol to estimate relative variation in litter mass loss, decomposition rate (k) and stabilisation factor (S) across space, and structural equation modelling (SEM) to identify relationships among environmental factors and decomposition. Contrasting our expectations, microenvironmental factors explained little of the observed variation in both litter mass loss, as well as k and S, suggesting that the variables included in our study were not the major controls of decomposer activity in the soil across the studied tundra landscape. We use these unexpected findings of our study combined with findings from the current literature to discuss future avenues for improving our understanding of the drivers of tundra decomposition and, ultimately, carbon cycling across the warming Arctic. Simple Summary: At present, it is difficult to evaluate the cartilage of an equine stifle with the most accessible imaging modalities, such as ultrasonography and radiography. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been established as the optimal noninvasive modality for a global evaluation of joints in humans. With technical advances, MRI is becoming more available for equine patients as well. Currently there is no general consensus on the optimal sequence for cartilage evaluation even though there are many possibilities. This study compares a routinely used two-dimensional (2D) sequence to four different three dimensional sequences (3D). Measuring the cartilage thickness in 30 different regions of interest (ROI) in each sequence and comparing them to macroscopic measurements showed that the 3D sequences were more accurate than the 2D sequence. Specifically, the 3D VIEW T2W HR and T1W VISTA SPAIR depicted cartilage thickness most accurately. Knowing the accuracy of different sequences improves the evaluation of equine cartilage and the early detection of cartilage pathologies. This promotes MRI as a noninvasive imaging modality for horses suffering from stifle lameness with no findings using conventional imaging methods. Furthermore, since 3D sequences are more accurate in depicting cartilage, they may replace 2D sequences, shortening scanning time. The objective of this study was to compare articular cartilage thickness observed in the different 2D and 3D sequences to the cartilage thickness of the equine stifle in cadavers to determine the accuracy of each sequence. The study was conducted as a blinded laboratory study using seven equine stifle specimens. The 2D (T2W TSE) and 3D (3D VIEW T2W HR, T2 3D mFFE, T1W VISTA SPAIR, 3D PDW SPAIR) 3-tesla MRI sequences of each stifle were obtained. Cartilage thickness was measured at 30 locations on MRI and on gross pathology. Thickness measurements were compared using a Bland–Altman plot and post hoc analysis tests. The 3D sequences were found to be generally more accurate than the 2D sequence (p < 0.001). The smallest difference to macroscopic measurements was observed in the 3D VIEW T2W HR and T1W VISTA SPAIR sequences with no statistical difference between each other. Knowing the accuracy of different sequences will improve the evaluation of equine cartilage and the early detection of cartilage pathologies. Simple Summary: Tenosynovitis of the digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS), developing secondary to intrathecal tendinopathy, is commonly diagnosed using ultrasonography and contrast tenography. However, precise pre-operative diagnosis remains challenging. The objective of this study was to determine and compare the sensitivity and specificity of low-field MRI and direct low-field MRI tenography (MRIt) to detect experimentally created lesions of the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT), deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), manica flexoria (MF) and proximal scutum in 21 DFTS cadavers. Proximal scutum lesions (Sensitivity: 38% versus 50%, p = 0.80; specificity: 96% versus 96%, p = 1) and SDFT lesions (Sensitivity: 39% versus 54%, p = 0.72; specificity: 93% versus 96%, p = 1) were less frequently identified by MRI compared to MRIt, respectively. MRI detected DDFT lesions (sensitivity 34%; specificity 100%) better than MRIt (sensitivity 32%, p = 0.77; specificity 98%, p = 1). This was similar for MF lesions (MRI sensitivity 61%; specificity 100% vs. MRIt sensitivity 50%, p = 0.68; specificity 96%, p = 1). Lesion size was significantly associated with MRI or MRIt diagnosis (p = 0.001). Tenosynovitis of the digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS) is diagnosed using ultrasonography and contrast tenography. We propose a new generic combination for the Mexican skipper Pholisora tepeca Bell, 1942, transferred into the genus Bolla Mabille, 1903, based on morphological and molecular data. In addition, taxonomic notes on this species, including a redescription of the male and the first illustrations of the female genitalia, a taxonomic catalogue, and a distributional map, are provided. Following deglaciation during the final stages of the Pleistocene, vast landscapes became increasingly accessible for human dispersal. With no historical analogs, it remains uncertain how people were adapting to these unknown and often unstable environments and whether dispersals were sustained or characterized by local retreat or extinction events. We here address these uncertainties by using climate niche modeling to investigate the relationship between climate and the archaeological record of such a dispersal event: the Late Upper Paleolithic Hamburgian settlement of northern Europe. Our models consider temperature and precipitation from paleoclimate models with high temporal and spatial resolution. They suggest that rising temperatures instead of precipitation changes drove dispersal events by allowing carriers of the Hamburgian tradition to occupy a specific northward-shifting climate space. Similarly, our models suggest a subsequent constriction and fragmentation of this climate space caused by declining temperatures. This climatic downturn and shifting climate space coincide with the disappearance of the Hamburgian tradition from the archaeological record. We argue that this sudden climatic change altered the social and demographic costs of northward dispersal to become unsustainable, leading to a depopulation of the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this contribution, we investigate the formation and dissociation of boron–hydrogen (BH) pairs in crystalline silicon under thermal equilibrium conditions. Our samples span doping concentrations of nearly two orders of magnitude and are passivated with a layer stack consisting of thin aluminum oxide and hydrogen-rich silicon nitride (Al 2 O 3 /SiN x :H). This layer stack acts as a hydrogen source during a following rapid thermal annealing. We characterize the samples using low-temperature Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and four-point-probe resistivity measurements. Our findings show that the proportion of hydrogen atoms initially bound to boron (BH pairs) rises with increasing boron concentration. Upon isothermal dark annealing at (163 ± 2) °C, hydrogen present in molecular form, H 2 , dissociates at a rate directly proportional to the concentration of boron atoms, ∝ [ B − ], leading to the formation of BH pairs. With prolonged annealing, an unknown hydrogen complex is formed at a rate that is inversely proportional to the square of the boron concentration, ∝ 1/[B − ] 2 , resulting in the disappearance of BH pairs. Based on experimental observations, we derive a kinetic model in which we describe the formation of the unknown complex through neutral hydrogen H 0 binding to a sink. Additionally, we investigate the temperature dependence of the reaction rates and find that the H 2 dissociation process has an activation energy of (1.11 ± 0.05) eV, which is in close agreement with theoretical predictions. Open in new tab Download slide OBJECTIVES Hypercholesterolaemia and obesity are risk factors for the development of calcified aortic valve disease and common comorbidities in respective patients. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma activation has been shown to reduce the progression of native aortic valve sclerosis, while its effect on bioprosthetic valve degeneration is yet unknown. This project aims to analyse the impact of pioglitazone, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma agonist, on the degeneration of biological aortic valve conduits in an implantation model in obese and hypercholesterolaemic rats. METHODS Cryopreserved allogenic rat aortic valve conduits (n  = 40) were infrarenally implanted into Wistar rats on high-fat (34.6%) diet. One cohort was treated with pioglitazone (75 mg/kg chow; n  = 20, group PIO) and compared to untreated rats (n  = 20, group control). After 4 or 12 weeks, conduits were explanted and analysed by (immuno-)histology and real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS A significantly decreased intima hyperplasia occurred in group PIO compared to control after 4 (P  = 0.014) and 12 weeks (P  = 0.045). Calcification of the intima was significantly decreased in PIO versus control at 12 weeks (P  = 0.0001). No significant inter-group differences were shown for media calcification after 4 and 12 weeks. Echocardiographically, significantly lower regurgitation through the implanted aortic valve conduit was observed in PIO compared to control after 4 (P  = 0.018) and 12 weeks (P  = 0.0004). Inflammatory activity was comparable between both groups. CONCLUSIONS Systemic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma activation decreases intima hyperplasia and subsequent intima calcification of cryopreserved allografts in obese, hypercholesterolaemic recipients. Additionally, it seems to inhibit functional impairment of the implanted aortic valve. Further preclinical studies are required to determine the long-term impact of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma agonists on graft durability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In vivo deuterated water (2H2O) labeling leads to deuterium (2H) incorporation into biomolecules of proliferating cells and provides the basis for its use in cell kinetics research. We hypothesized that rapidly proliferating cancer cells would become preferentially labeled with 2H and, therefore, could be visualized by deuterium magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) following a brief period of in vivo systemic 2H2O administration. We initiated systemic 2H2O administration in two xenograft mouse models harboring either human colorectal, HT-29, or pancreatic, MiaPaCa-2, tumors and 2H2O level of ~ 8% in total body water (TBW). Three schemas of 2H2O administration were tested: (1) starting at tumor seeding and continuing for 7 days of in vivo growth with imaging on day 7, (2) starting at tumor seeding and continuing for 14 days of in vivo growth with imaging on day 14, and (3) initiation of labeling following a week of in vivo tumor growth and continuing until imaging was performed on day 14. Deuterium chemical shift imaging of the tumor bearing limb and contralateral control was performed on either day 7 of 14 after tumor seeding, as described. After 14 days of in vivo tumor growth and 7 days of systemic labeling with 2H2O, a clear deuterium contrast was demonstrated between the xenografts and normal tissue. Labeling in the second week after tumor implantation afforded the highest contrast between neoplastic and healthy tissue in both models. Systemic labeling with 2H2O can be used to create imaging contrast between tumor and healthy issue, providing a non-radioactive method for in vivo cancer imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Landsat satellites provide decades of near‐global surface reflectance measurements that are increasingly used to assess interannual changes in terrestrial ecosystem function. These assessments often rely on spectral indices related to vegetation greenness and productivity (e.g. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI). Nevertheless, multiple factors impede multi‐decadal assessments of spectral indices using Landsat satellite data, including ease of data access and cleaning, as well as lingering issues with cross‐sensor calibration and challenges with irregular timing of cloud‐free acquisitions. To help address these problems, we developed the 'LandsatTS' package for R. This software package facilitates sample‐based time series analysis of surface reflectance and spectral indices derived from Landsat sensors. The package includes functions that enable the extraction of the full Landsat 5, 7, and 8 records from Collection 2 for point sample locations or small study regions using Google Earth Engine accessed directly from R. Moreover, the package includes functions for 1) rigorous data cleaning, 2) cross‐sensor calibration, 3) phenological modeling, and 4) time series analysis. For an example application, we show how 'LandsatTS' can be used to assess changes in annual maximum vegetation greenness from 2000 to 2022 across the Noatak National Preserve in northern Alaska, USA. Overall, this software provides a suite of functions to enable broader use of Landsat satellite data for assessing and monitoring terrestrial ecosystem function during recent decades across local to global geographic extents. Summary: Background: A common cause of lameness in horses is tenovaginitis of the digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS). Ultrasound and contrast tenography have become frequently used diagnostic tools for abnormalities in the DFTS, but are considered insufficiently accurate in describing specific lesions. Objectives: To determine the sensitivity and specificity of computed tomographic tenography (CTT) and 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect artificial lesions within the DFTS. Study design: Blinded laboratory study. Methods: Using an arthroscopic hook knife, lesions (10–20 mm long and 3–5 mm deep; n = 52) were created tenoscopically in the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT), deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), manica flexoria (MF) and proximal scutum in 19 distal limb specimens. MRI and CTT were performed and images were reviewed. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated for each modality and compared. Results: Computed tomographic tenography and MRI identification of SDFT and MF lesions showed similar sensitivity (75% vs. 85%, respectively; p = 1) and specificity for MF lesions (96% for both). SDFT lesions specificity was similar for CTT versus MRI (85% vs. 77%, respectively; p = 0.88). For DDFT lesions, MRI sensitivity (62%) was higher compared to CTT (38%), although not statistically significant (p = 0.58). MRI specificity (92%) was lower than CTT (96%, p = 1). Lesions in the proximal scutum were more frequently identified by MRI compared to CTT (sensitivity: 93% vs. 57%, p = 0.17; specificity: 96% vs. 100%, p = 1). Main limitations: Artificial, small lesions were assessed. An incomplete arthroscopic portal seal resulted in pressure loss and contrast leakage. Conclusions: The sensitivity and specificity of both modalities are good to excellent for the diagnosis of most artificially created lesions. CTT performed similarly to MRI in detecting SDFT and MF lesions. MRI showed a higher sensitivity for the diagnosis of DDFT and proximal scutum lesions. Classic ecological research into the determinants of biodiversity patterns emphasised the important role of three‐dimensional (3D) vegetation heterogeneity. Yet, measuring vegetation structure across large areas has historically been difficult. A growing focus on large‐scale research questions has caused local vegetation heterogeneity to be overlooked compared with more readily accessible habitat metrics from, for example, land cover maps.Using newly available 3D vegetation data, we investigated the relative importance of habitat and vegetation heterogeneity for explaining patterns of bird species richness and composition across Denmark (42,394 km2).We used standardised, repeated point counts of birds conducted by volunteers across Denmark alongside metrics of habitat availability from land‐cover maps and vegetation structure from rasterised LiDAR data (10 m resolution). We used random forest models to relate species richness to environmental features and considered trait‐specific responses by grouping species by nesting behaviour, habitat preference and primary lifestyle. Finally, we evaluated the role of habitat and vegetation heterogeneity metrics in explaining local bird assemblage composition.Overall, vegetation structure was equally as important as habitat availability for explaining bird richness patterns. However, we did not find a consistent positive relationship between species richness and habitat or vegetation heterogeneity; instead, functional groups displayed individual responses to habitat features. While oxidative stress is known as key element in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and calcific aortic valve disease, its role in the degeneration of biological cardiovascular grafts has not been clarified yet. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the impact of oxidative stress on the degeneration of biological cardiovascular allografts in a standardized chronic implantation model realized in rats exhibiting superoxide dismutase 3 deficiency (SOD3(−)). Rats with SOD3 loss‐of‐function mutation (n = 24) underwent infrarenal implantation of cryopreserved valved aortic conduits, while SOD3‐competent recipients served as controls (n = 28). After a follow‐up period of 4 or 12 weeks, comparative analyses addressed degenerative processes, hemodynamics, and evaluation of the oxidative stress model. SOD3(−) rats presented decreased circulating SOD activity (p =.0079). After 12 weeks, 58% of the implant valves in SOD3(−) rats showed regurgitation (vs. 31% in controls, p =.2377). Intima hyperplasia and chondro‐osteogenic transformation contributed to progressive graft calcification (p =.0024). At 12 weeks, hydroxyapatite deposition (p =.0198) and the gene expression of runt‐related transcription factor‐2 (Runx2) (p =.0093) were significantly enhanced in group SOD3(−). Summary: A 9‐year‐old Warmblood, high‐level showjumping mare sustained an acute, closed, vertical, comminuted fracture of the left accessory carpal bone (ACB) during a fall. The fracture was repaired under standing sedation and local anaesthesia, using a 6‐hole APTUS® 3.5 TFP and 5 × 3.5‐mm self‐tapping TriLock© screws. The mare recovered from surgery without complications. Upon follow‐up examination 9 months post‐operatively the mare was sound in all gaits and back to full athletic activity. The ACB fracture had completely healed. Many people believe in and use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to address health issues or prevent diseases. Empirical evidence for those treatments is either lacking or controversial due to methodological weaknesses. Thus, practitioners and patients primarily rely on subjective references rather than credible empirical evidence from systematic research. This study investigated whether cognitive and personality factors explain differences in belief in CAM and homeopathy. We investigated the robustness of 21 predictors when examined together to obtain insights into key determinants of such beliefs in a sample of 599 participants (60% female, 18-81 years). A combination of predictors explained 20% of the variance in CAM belief (predictors: ontological confusions, spiritual epistemology, agreeableness, death anxiety, gender) and approximately 21% of the variance in belief in homeopathy (predictors: ontological confusions, illusory pattern perception, need for cognitive closure, need for cognition, honesty-humility, death anxiety, gender, age). Individuals believing in CAM and homeopathy have cognitive biases and certain individual differences which make them perceive the world differently. Introduction: Critically ill hospitalized patients tend to present high rates of weight loss, which, related to the clinical picture, is associated with increased occurrence of infections, morbidity and prolonged hospitalization. Objective: To identify the nutritional status and the caloric and protein adequacy of the enteral diet infused in patients in the intensive care unit. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive quantitative study, with participants of both genders, aged 18 years or older, using exclusive enteral nutritional therapy. Nutritional status was assessed by body mass index (BMI) and arm circumference (AC). To calculate energy and protein needs, the recommendations of the Brazilian enteral nutrition guidelines were considered. The adequacy was performed through daily collection of prescription and infusion information. For the analyses we applied tests considering statistical significance p<0.05. Results: 22 patients were evaluated, 68.18% were male. The main reasons for hospitalization were cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, and the most predominant nutritional status according to the BMI was overweight in 55% of patients, while 50% were eutrophic. The calorie adequacy was adequate in 73% of patients, while protein adequacy was not adequate in 55%. The caloric and protein adequacy showed no association between the nutritional parameters and clinical outcome. Conclusion: The findings of this study allow us to affirm the importance of early nutritional assessment, as well as the adequate monitoring of nutritional support, aiming at the best clinical outcome of the patient. Aim: Due to the introduction of a new implantable pulse generator (IPG), the Interstim II, patients with either a dynamic graciloplasty or an abdominally placed IPG for sacral neuromodulation could not undergo surgery to replace their IPG in the case of end of battery life. For these patients, the Medtronic Replacement Adaptor 09106 was created. This retrospective case series aims to study safety and feasibility of the Medtronic Replacement Adaptor 09106 in patients with abdominally placed IPGs. Methods: Seventeen patients (11 women, six men) received a replacement adaptor with a follow‐up of 6 months. Outcome measures consisted of a bowel habit diary. Adverse events were classified using the Clavien–Dindo classification. Results: Outcome measures in the bowel habit diaries after replacement (feasibility) did not differ significantly from outcome measures before replacement. Adverse events occurred in four out of 17 patients (24%): two patients initially showed pocket site pain (Clavien–Dindo Grade I), which resolved without intervention. One patient suffered from poor wound closure (Clavien–Dindo Grade II) and one patient had persisting pocket pain (Clavien–Dindo Grade IIIa) for which a pocket revision was performed. Statistical analyses were performed making paired comparisons using a Wilcoxon signed rank test. Conclusion: The Medtronic Replacement Adaptor 09106 is a valuable option for patients with dynamic graciloplasty or sacral neuromodulation and abdominal IPG and has complication rates similar to replacement of the Interstim without Replacement Adaptor 09106. Based on the question raised by Anthony Tommasini in an article of 2020 in The New York Times newspaper about the use of blind auditions in orchestra entrance exams, the article questions the validity and reliability of assessment criteria commonly used in tests and competitions for instrumental musicians. Cognitive biases reflect historical processes and culturally learned behaviours, carry prejudices and collaborate to maintain standards determined by socialization. Although common sense among professional musicians points to certainties regarding evaluative criteria elaborated and judged by experts, such certainties are not confirmed by the scrutiny of scientific rigor, which points to visual interferences, among others, some of them with intersectionalities of gender and race. The text emphasizes the importance of seeking validation of visual and sound criteria for musical evaluation and, since the area has not yet been able to produce reliable evaluation instruments, it advocates for the use of the screen in all stages of the tests. This article aims to investigate the representation of violence against children in the children’s literature work Corda bamba (2018), by Lygia Bojunga. Violence is understood as any action that annihilates or reduces someone’s dignity, an aspect that, as part of the relationship between individuals, makes the conception of identities present. As the child, in his relationship with the adult, is viewed as another, violence against this social group is conceived from the perspective of identity constitution. Corda Bamba (2018) is analyzed from this angle, as a narrative in which psychological violence against children and the denial of their identity are manifested under a false veil of care and protection. The article demonstrates that Lygia Bojunga makes use of narrative strategies and the symbolism of language to compose her text, which, although it allows for different interpretations, requires the reader to position himself in the face of the treatment given to the child, transforming it into an object of knowledge and of reflection on the represented reality. Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have dysfunctional relational characteristics that impact their interpersonal relationships. The aim of this study was to describe the conflicting relational patterns of a BPD patient of psychodynamic psychotherapy. This is a systematic case study. Core Conflictual Relationship Theme -- CCRT method was used to identify in relationship episodes the components of the central conflict. Independent judges reviewed the recordings and transcripts of the initial sessions of treatment and the final sessions of each year of treatment. The analysis was performed based on the frequency of CCRT components. The results indicate that the patient's core conflict remains the same over time, as does her core desire, but there is a significant change in the way the patient interacts in her relationships. We study through simulations a layout mixing RF and THz technologies for a compact ultrafast X-ray pulse source based on Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS), aiming to deliver few femtoseconds to sub-femtosecond pulses. The layout consists of an S-band gun as the electron source and a dielectric-loaded circular waveguide driven by a multicycle THz pulse to accelerate and longitudinally compress the bunch, before X-ray generation via ICS with a laser pulse. We detail several schemes allowing the optimization of the electron bunch properties. This optimization leads to a preliminary layout and various working points able to deliver 0.1–5 pC bunches, ranging from 15 to 18 MeV average kinetic energy, 0.4 to 5 fs rms length, 0.1% to 2.6% rms energy spread, and 5 to 13 μm rms transverse size. Simultaneously, the beamline is kept compact (≈1.3 m up to the ICS point), which has not yet been achieved using only conventional RF technologies. The properties of the X-ray pulse are investigated with simulations, showing the possibility to tune its energy between 2.9 and 11.5 keV. For 400 mJ of laser energy, 1.5 × 104–7.7 × 104 photons/pulse in 1.5% rms bandwidth or 6.2 × 103–3.5 × 104 photons/pulse with lower bandwidths (0.56%–1.5% rms along the energy range) can be expected. The properties of the DLW and of the THz pulse driving it, the state-of-the-art of the THz pulse generation schemes, and the influence of various jitters and the limits that they should not exceed for a reasonably stable operation are finally given. Climate warming is inducing widespread vegetation changes in Arctic tundra ecosystems, with the potential to alter carbon and nutrient dynamics between vegetation and soils. Yet, we lack a detailed understanding of how variation in vegetation and topography influences fine‐scale temperatures ("microclimate") that mediate these dynamics, and at what resolution vegetation needs to be sampled to capture these effects. We monitored microclimate at 90 plots across a tundra landscape in western Greenland. Our stratified random study design covered gradients of topography and vegetation, while nested plots (0.8–100 m2) enabled comparison across different sampling resolutions. We used Bayesian mixed‐effect models to quantify the direct influence of plot‐level topography, moisture and vegetation on soil, near‐surface and canopy‐level temperatures (−6, 2, and 15 cm). During the growing season, colder soils were predicted by shrub cover (−0.24°C per 10% increase), bryophyte cover (−0.35°C per 10% increase), and vegetation height (−0.17°C per 1 cm increase). The same three factors also predicted the magnitude of differences between soil and above‐ground temperatures, indicating warmer soils at low cover/height, but colder soils under closed/taller canopies. These findings were consistent across plot sizes, suggesting that spatial predictions of microclimate may be possible at the operational scales of satellite products. During winter, snow cover (+0.75°C per 10 snow‐covered days) was the key predictor of soil microclimate. Topography and moisture explained little variation in the measured temperatures. Our results not only underline the close connection of vegetation and snow with microclimate in the Arctic tundra but also point to the need for more studies disentangling their complex interplay across tundra environments and seasons. Future shifts in vegetation cover and height will likely mediate the impact of atmospheric warming on the tundra soil environment, with potential implications for below‐ground organisms and ecosystem functioning. Lyme disease is the most common infectious disease transmitted by ticks throughout Europe. Bacteria of the Borrelia burgdorferi complex are transmitted via tick bites to humans. The typical initial presentation is a localized infection of the skin (Erythema migrans). If the patient is not treated with antibiotics, a disseminated infection might occur, presenting as neurological Lyme disease, Lyme carditis, Lyme arthritis or Acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans. A neuroborreliosis occurs in 3–15% of the cases. It may present as polyradiculitis, meningitis or – in rare cases – as encephalomyelitis. This interview study explored patient experiences, how FI affects daily life, and identified treatment outcomes that matter most to this group of patients. The interviews revealed that patients do not just want fewer physical symptoms, but they want to regain freedom, to go out and move around like they used to, and to be able to do their daily activities without any problems.These patient perspectives should be used in future research within this field to improve patient satisfaction and patient perceived treatment success. Summary: Background: Recent studies have associated several microRNAs (miRNAs) with childhood obesity and energy homeostasis, suggesting that an individual miRNA profile could be used as an early predictor to estimate the response to weight loss interventions in the design of precision nutrition. Objective: To investigate associations between the expression of circulating adiposity‐related miRNAs and the response to a weight loss intervention. Methods: A total of 51 Spanish girls (age 7–16 years) with abdominal obesity underwent 8 weeks of a multidisciplinary intervention for weight loss. Participants were stratified into two groups in accordance with changes in body mass index (BMI) standard deviation score: low‐responders (LR) and high‐responders (HR). The expression of 39 circulating miRNAs (c‐miRNAs) was evaluated in plasma of all subjects before the intervention. Results: Six miRNAs were differentially expressed between LR and HR. However, after adjustment for Tanner stage, the association was maintained only for miR‐126‐3p and miR‐221‐3p with a higher expression in HR group compared to LR group. After the intervention, miR‐221‐3p expression decreased in all subjects with a significant difference in the change within groups. However, changes in miR‐126‐3p levels were not significant. The expression of miR‐221‐3p was positively correlated with body weight, BMI and waist circumference, and negatively correlated with quantitative insulin sensitivity check index. Conclusions: Bioinformatic analysis evidenced that miR‐221‐3p participates in several obesity‐related pathways, and more interestingly, this miRNA targets several candidate genes to childhood obesity according to DisGeNet database. Using standpoint epistemology and critical mass theories this study examines outcomes of the 2012 ProQuote [ProQuota] initiative in Germany demanding at least 30% women in leadership per newsroom. In-depth interviews with 53 journalists in 21 newsrooms show that ProQuote boosted women's ascension into leadership by triggering and sustaining a debate about gender in newsroom leadership. This contributed to the normalization and legitimization of women in top positions, somewhat alleviating the stigma of tokenism. With critical mass in a given newsroom, women's standpoints have entered the discourse on leadership. Sodium ions (Na+) negatively affect most land plant species as a consequence of both general osmotic effects and specific ion toxicity. Na+ travels through the plant body via the transpiration stream, and this results in direct exposure of guard cells to apoplastic Na+. This article summarizes extant literature on short- and long-term stomatal conductance responses to salinity, stomatal movements of isolated guard cells in response to NaCl, and guard cell ion content following NaCl exposure. We discuss the potential role of Na+ as an osmoticum that itself could drive guard cell swelling and stomatal opening, possible contributions of carbohydrates in guard cell osmoregulation following NaCl exposure, and the role of ABA in stomatal responses to salinity. We highlight responses of glycophytes vs halophytes when comparative information is available. Based on our integration of published information, we propose that salt sensitivity arises in part by glycophytic guard cell uptake of Na+ and resultant short-term stomatal opening that promotes plant desiccation and toxic accumulation of Na+ in the leaf. However, many aspects of guard cell Na+ sensing, transport, and response remain unknown, and new studies are required both to test this hypothesis and to address numerous knowledge gaps. According to previous research, borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with high cost-of-illness. However, there is still a shortage of cost-of-illness-studies assessing costs from a broad societal perspective, including direct and indirect costs. Further, there are considerable differences in the results among the existing studies. In the present study, 167 German men and women seeking specialized outpatient treatment for BPD were included. We assessed societal cost-of-illness bottom-up through structured face-to-face interviews and encompassed a wide range of cost components. All costs were calculated for the 2015 price level. Cost-of-illness amounted to € 31,130 per patient and year preceding disorder-specific outpatient treatment. € 17,044 (54.8%) were direct costs that were mostly related to hospital treatment. Indirect costs amounted to € 14,086 (45.2%). Within indirect costs, costs related to work disability were the most crucial cost driver. The present study underlines the tremendous economic burden of BPD. According to the present study, both the direct and indirect costs are of significant importance for the societal costs associated with BPD. Besides the need for more disorder-specific treatment facilities for men and women with BPD, we assume that education and employment are topics that should be specifically targeted and individually supported at an early stage of treatment. This study addresses the clinical outcome after a ventral intervention with VBR and bisegmental fusion.The study includes 76 patients (mean age: 59.34 ± 15.97; 34 females and 42 males) with fractures in the lower thoracic and lumbar spine. They were selected from patients of our hospital who received an anterolateral VBR surgery on the corresponding lower spine region over a nine-year period. Only patients were examined with X-rays and complete follow-up records. Exclusion criteria were changes due to degeneration and pathological fractures. Patients were divided into two groups, the thoracotomy group (Th10-L1) and the lumbotomy group (L2-5), respectively. Minimum one year after surgery, patients were asked about their well-being using a precasted questionnaire.No significant differences with respect to the subjective impression of the patients concerning their back pain, spinal functional impairment, their general functional status and their quality of life impairment. Unfortunately, however, only a rather modest but significant increase of the post-surgical life quality was reported.Patients who underwent VBR in the lower thoracic or lumbar spine show modest long-term well-being. Trial registration number DRKS00031452.Trial registration: Surgical stabilization of the spine by vertebral body replacement (VBR) is used for spinal disorders such as traumatic fractures to provide an anatomical re-adjustment of the spine to prevent late detrimental effects and pain [1–4]. This study addresses the clinical outcome after a ventral intervention with VBR and bisegmental fusion.The study includes 76 patients (mean age: 59.34 ± 15.97; 34 females and 42 males) with fractures in the lower thoracic and lumbar spine. They were selected from patients of our hospital who received an anterolateral VBR surgery on the corresponding lower spine region over a nine-year period. Only patients were examined with X-rays and complete follow-up records. Exclusion criteria were changes due to degeneration and pathological fractures. Patients were divided into two groups, the thoracotomy group (Th10-L1) and the lumbotomy group (L2-5), respectively. Minimum one year after surgery, patients were asked about their well-being using a precasted questionnaire.No significant differences with respect to the subjective impression of the patients concerning their back pain, spinal functional impairment, their general functional status and their quality of life impairment. Unfortunately, however, only a rather modest but significant increase of the post-surgical life quality was reported.Patients who underwent VBR in the lower thoracic or lumbar spine show modest long-term well-being. This study evaluated the effect of vitamin D 3 (VIT D 3) supplementation on the enzymatic activities and density of ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase (E-NTPDase), ecto-5-nucleotidase (E-5′-NT), adenosine deaminase (ADA), as well as the density of P2 × 7R, P2Y12R, A1R, A2AR receptors, IL-1β, and oxidative parameters in type 2 diabetic rats. Forty male Wistar rats were fed a high carbohydrate-high fat diet (HCHFD) and received an intraperitoneal injection containing a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ, 35 mg/kg). Animals were divided into four groups: 1) control; 2) control/VIT D 3 12 µg/kg; 3) diabetic; and 4) diabetic/VIT D 3 12 µg/kg. Results show that VIT D 3 reduced blood glucose, ATP hydrolysis, ADA activity, P2Y12R density (platelets), as well as ATP, ADP, and AMP hydrolysis and ADA activity (synaptosomes). Moreover, VIT D 3 increased insulin levels and AMP hydrolysis (platelets) and improved antioxidant defense. Therefore, we suggest that VIT D 3 treatment modulates hyperglycemia-induced changes via purinergic enzymes and receptor expression, consequently attenuating insulin homeostasis dysregulation in the diabetic state. Purpose: Primary or recurrent urethral stenoses are common clinical problems. The aim of this feasibility study was development and application test of a novel radioactive catheter for potential use in low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy to prevent urethral stenosis. Material and methods: A beta radiation emitting phosphorous-32 (32P)-foil was developed and integrated in indwelling catheter, which is usually inserted after surgical intervention in the urethra. Activity and dose distribution were measured after neutron activation of the phosphorus-31 (31P)-foil component with scintillation techniques as well as radiochromic films, and compared to MC simulations. Practicability and radiation safety of this new applicator were tested on male rabbits, which, before catheter application, had undergone a new method of stricture induction by radial laser light irradiation. Results: Measured dose distributions of catheters with 32P-foils were found to be in good agreement with MC simulations. Wash-out tests confirmed the radioactive catheter setup to be inside permitted limits of a sealed source. Strictures could be induced by laser light in all animals, surgically treated by slitting and irradiation with a 7-day dose of 15 Gy or 30 Gy, without adverse effects of radiation during a 4-week observation time. Conclusions: This proof-of-concept study presents a safe and technically simple approach to LDR brachytherapy intending to prevent urethral stenosis. The prescribed irradiation dose can be administered in a reproducible and precise manner using a urethral catheter as a carrier of beta radiating foil. The study duration of 63 days was too short to make statistically significant stricture-related conclusions. Biodiversity studies could strongly benefit from three-dimensional data on ecosystem structure derived from contemporary remote sensing technologies, such as light detection and ranging (lidar). Despite the increasing availability of such data at regional and national scales, the average ecologist has been limited in accessing them due to high requirements on computing power and remote sensing knowledge. We processed Denmark's publicly available national airborne laser scanning (ALS) data set acquired in 2014/15, together with the accompanying elevation model, to compute 70 rasterised descriptors of interest for ecological studies. With a grain size of 10 m, these data products provide a snapshot of high-resolution measures including vegetation height, structure and density, as well as topographic descriptors including elevation, aspect, slope and wetness across more than 40 000 km 2 covering almost all of Denmark's terrestrial surface. The resulting data set is comparatively small (∼94 GB, compressed 16.8 GB), and the raster data can be readily integrated into analytical workflows in software familiar to many ecologists (GIS software, R, Python). Source code and documentation for the processing workflow are openly available via a code repository, allowing for transfer to other ALS data sets, as well as modification or re-calculation of future instances of Denmark's national ALS data set. We hope that our high-resolution ecological vegetation and terrain descriptors (EcoDes-DK15) will serve as an inspiration for the publication of further such data sets covering other countries and regions and that our rasterised data set will provide a baseline of the ecosystem structure for current and future studies of biodiversity, within Denmark and beyond. Objective: To analyze the clinical and nutritional profile and the usual food consumption of diabetic amputee patients admitted to a teaching hospital. Methods: conducted ahonor studentcrosswithsample convenience with elderly patients of both sexes admitted to a hospital-school located inside the Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), May to September 2021. Nutritional status was classified by Body Mass Index and arm circumference. Clinical history data were collected from medical records and the habits and frequency of habitual food consumption were questioned. Results: A total of 31 elderly patients, the prevalence of males, among the most prevalent comorbidities, highlighted Hypertension (SAH), as well as the presence of smoking. Overweight was evidenced in more than half of the population (n=13). There was daily consumption of beans (n=26), fruits (n=23), vegetables (n=20), and frequency of sugary drinks and sausages 3x/week. Conclusions: The patients, all elderly, had a clinical, nutritional and dietary profile with risk factors for the prevalence of chronic diseases associated with Diabetes Mellitus (DM), smoking, gender, age, overweight and frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods, but as a factor positive, there was also daily consumption of beans, fruits and vegetables. Intervention strategies, within the scope of food and nutrition education, can contribute to the improvement of the food consumption pattern and nutritional status of women in the climacteric, resulting in health benefits and quality of life. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of a 2-month nutritional intervention based on food and nutrition education strategies on nutritional status, cardiovascular risk, climacteric symptoms, food intake and lifestyle of adult women. It is a quasi-experimental study. Data were collected, pre and post intervention, related to nutritional status (weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC)), lifestyle, satisfaction and body weight pattern and frequency of food intake. Climacteric symptoms were assessed using the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science Program (SPSS). A total of sixteen women, with a mean age of 54±5.24 years, whose 62.5% reported weight gain in recent years, and 75% expressed body dissatisfaction. There was a significant reduction in WC (p = 0.006) and BMI classification (p = 0.046) from pre to post intervention. There was an increase in the frequency of dairy products ingestion, eggs, beans, grains and reduction of white bread. As for lifestyle and climacteric symptoms, no significant changes were observed. The 2-month nutritional intervention showed a positive impact on food consumption habits and nutritional status of women in the climacteric period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nitrogen in group-IV semiconductors has become a well-established element of qubits capable of room-temperature operation. In silicon carbide, nitrogen can occupy different nonequivalent lattice sites, giving rise to different shallow donor states. We report a triplet fine structure in electronic transitions of nitrogen donors on the quasi-cubic carbon site in 4H silicon carbide with activation enthalpies of around 100 meV. The intensities of triplet components have a prominent dependence on the voltage bias. The activation enthalpies of the transitions exhibit the Poole–Frenkel effect, while no bias dependence is observed for the magnitude of splitting. To investigate the perception of gender from children's voices, adult listeners were presented with /hVd/ syllables, in isolation and in sentence context, produced by children between 5 and 18 years. Half the listeners were informed of the age of the talker during trials, while the other half were not. Correct gender identifications increased with talker age; however, performance was above chance even for age groups where the cues most often associated with gender differentiation (i.e., average fundamental frequency and formant frequencies) were not consistently different between boys and girls. The results of acoustic models suggest that cues were used in an age-dependent manner, whether listeners were explicitly told the age of the talker or not. Overall, results are consistent with the hypothesis that talker age and gender are estimated jointly in the process of speech perception. Furthermore, results show that the gender of individual talkers can be identified accurately well before reliable anatomical differences arise in the vocal tracts of females and males. In general, results support the notion that the transmission of gender information from voice depends substantially on gender-dependent patterns of articulation, rather than following deterministically from anatomical differences between male and female talkers. Ionization processes can lead to the formation of radical cations with population in several ionic states. In this study, we examine the dynamics of three radical cations starting from an excited ionic state using trajectory surface hopping dynamics in combination with multiconfigurational electronic structure methods. The efficiency of relaxation to the ground state is examined in an effort to understand better whether fragmentation of cations is likely to occur directly on excited states or after relaxation to the ground state. The results on cyclohexadiene, hexatriene, and uracil indicate that relaxation to the ground ionic state is very fast in these systems, while fragmentation before relaxation is rare. Ultrafast relaxation is facilitated by the close proximity of electronic states and the presence of two- and three-state conical intersections.
