Radar signatures of rain over the ocean have a complex structure since they receive contributions from surface scattering and volume scattering and attenuation by hydrometeors in the atmosphere. These contributions overlap and are often difficult to detangle. While most of the mechanisms contributing to radar signatures of rain over the ocean are well understood, there is one remaining issue that has been discussed controversially in the literature for a long time. It is the question what scattering mechanism causes the areas of strongly enhanced radar backscatter, also called 'bright blobs' or 'bright patches', which are frequently observed on spaceborne C-band SAR images acquired over tropical and subtropical oceans in the presence of convective rain. Recently, papers have been published in which it is hypothesized that they are caused by radar backscattering at hydrometeors in the melting layer (ML). Although many observational facts seem to support this hypothesis, there exists one strong argument against this hypothesis: It is the observation that the position of the ML radar signatures (bright blob) in the SAR image is not shifted in anti-range from the position, where the rain column hits the sea surface. This absence of a shift is observed when 1) comparing Sentinel-1 SAR images on which rain cells are visible with quasi-concurrently acquired weather radar images and 2) when inter-comparing of SAR images of rain cells acquired concurrently at different frequencies and polarizations. Based on these observations, we discard the hypothesis that the bright blobs are due to volume scattering at hydrometeors in the ML and hypothesize instead that they are due to scattering at splash products at the sea surface. This hypothesis is supported by radar backscattering measurements carried out in the laboratory and from a shore-based platform, which show that, at C-and X-band, strong rain can give rise to strong radar returns also at cross-polarization. The Land Use Change Alert (LUCA) dataset was developed for effective and timely monitoring of global forest changes that are mostly associated with human activities. Near- real-time changes of forest land use are mapped at 0.05 ha minimum mapping unit for all forest types across the Earth's ecoregions, every two weeks. LUCA is based on Sentinel-1 cloud penetrating synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations to circumvent limitations of optical imagery from pervasive cloud cover over forested areas globally, and especially in the tropics. The methodology is based on a combination of time-series change detection and machine learning analytics to achieve high accuracy of alerts across all ecoregions and landscapes globally with an average area-adjusted users and producers accuracy of 83% and 63%, respectively. The bi-weekly global alert maps capture forest clearing associated with deforestation and industrial timber harvesting, along with forest degradation associated with selective logging, fragmentation, fire, and roads. The product was developed and released publicly through Google Earth Engine to allow for the rapid assessment of land use change activities, quantifying patterns and processes driving forest change and dynamics across forest ecoregions. LUCA is designed to help monitor a variety of emission reduction programs at the local to regional scales and play a key role in implementing regulations on deforestation-free products. Along the western coastal plain of the Red Sea, the discovery of lithic tools proved that the occurrence of archaeological remains belonged to the Stone Age era. Unfortunately, until recently, most of the Stone Age site plans in the western Red Sea periphery have been unknown because of change in climate in addition to covering these sites with a large layer of sand. Recently, remote sensing (RS) data have proven to be effective at identifying buried archaeological sites using radar satellite imagery due to their ability to penetrate the land surface. This paper aims to identify and reconstruct several potential Stone Age sites using radar satellite images in the Tokar region, North-Eastern Sudan, on the western plain of the Red Sea. Radar (Sentinel-1 SAR GRD: C-band) data were processed utilizing the advantages of the Google Earth Engine platform and Snap software. The results of this research showed that some potential settlements belonging to the Stone Age era (expectedly dating back to the end of the Pleistocene and/or the initial phase of the Holocene) have subcircular shapes with some interior subcircles. These results shed new light on the potential construction technique, size, and function of the settlement in the Stone Age era and can provide some initial insights into the ancient lifestyle in this region. Accurate and up-to-date information on urban built-up areas is significant for managing urban growth and development. Earth Observation (EO) data are valuable sources for meeting this demand. However, the extraction of urban built-up areas from EO data is challenging due to the limitations of EO data sources. To overcome this challenge, this study follows an approach that assesses the performance of optical (Sentinel-2), radar (Sentinel-1) and fused (Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2) data to extract urban built-up areas using machine learning algorithms including Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and KDTree KNN. The results were statistically analyzed by considering the Overall Accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient. In addition, 15 cm GSD (Ground Sample Distance) aerial photography of the study area was used to validate the results. According to the results, Sentinel-2 produced better representation and accuracy of urban built-up areas than Sentinel-1 and even the fused image. Regarding to machine learning algorithms classification performance, RF performed better in both OA and Kappa coefficient along all datasets. The research findings can have significant implications for various domains, such as urban planning, land use management and open avenues for further comparisons of different EO data sources and machine learning algorithms for built-up areas extraction. The paper describes an algorithm to differentiate leads from sea ice using the dual polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from the Sentinel-1 satellite in an extrawide swath mode. The algorithm uses the polarimetric features of the sea surface signal obtained in the SAR images: the ratio between co- and cross-polarization. A technique is proposed for classifying the SAR images to identify discontinuities (cracks, leads) in drifting sea ice using the ratio and difference of polarizations together with texture features and the neural network implementation. The Biomass Proxy is a new cloud-free vegetation monitoring product that offers timely and analysis-ready data indicative of above-ground crop biomass dynamics at 10m spatial resolution. The Biomass Proxy links the consistent and continuous temporal signal of the Sentinel-1 Cross Ratio (CR), a vegetation index derived from Synthetic Aperture Radar backscatter, with the spatial information of the Sentinel-2 Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a vegetation index derived from optical observations. A global scaling relationship between CR and NDVI forms the basis of a novel fusion methodology based on static and dynamic combinations of temporal and spatial responses of CR and NDVI at field level. The fusion process is used to mitigate the impact on product quality of low satellite revisit periods due to acquisition design or persistent cloud coverage, and to respond to rapid changes in a timely manner to detect environmental and management events. The resulting Biomass Proxy provides time series that are continuous, unhindered by clouds, and produced uniformly across all geographical regions and crops. The results of analysis of spatiotemporal variability of submesoscale surface eddy structures from May to October of 2019–2022 in Lake Ladoga are summarized using more than 1000 Sentinel–1A/B high-resolution images as the original data. The wide occurrence of small eddy structures on the lake surface is revealed during the warm period of the year. In total, 496 surface eddies with an average diameter of 2 km are registered. More than 90% of the recorded eddies belong to the submesoscale variability range. Cyclonic rotation is typical of 84% of the structures. A seasonal maximum of eddy activity is registered during the stable stratification over most of Lake Ladoga. The eddies occur most frequently to the north and northeast of the Valaam Island in areas ~100 m deep but close to the seabed unevenness. During the spring thermocline, the eddies are often registered from the cold side of the frontal boundary indicating their important contribution to the water exchange and mixing processes. The problem of estimating soil moisture by remote (satellite) methods remains topical. To do this, regression models based on the correlation between radar data and ground-based measurements of soil moisture are constructed. Ground-based measurements were taken at two stations in Germany (Falkenberg and Gevenich), which are a part of the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN). Sentinel-1 satellite data are used as radar data. Multiple regressions with a determination coefficient up to 0.91 are constructed. It is proposed to use in regressions not only radar, but also meteorological data, which makes it possible to increase the coefficient of determination and reduce the standard error of regression. For the possible spread of regressions obtained for one territory to another, two criteria are proposed: proximity of the values of the Selyaninov hydrothermal coefficient (HTC) and similarity of the soil texture. According to these conditions, two stations in Ryazan oblast and in Kalmykia were chosen. Their archival information on soil moisture is contained in the ISMN database up to 1998. This paper presents studies on using Sentinel-1 imagery data to determine the attributes of mixed forest stands. The fieldwork is carried out in Kostroma, Vologda, and Arkhangelsk oblasts and the Udmurt Republic. The study reveals that quantitative and qualitative forest characteristics correlate with radar survey parameters; the value of this correlation is identified. This paper presents an operational approach for detecting floods and establishing flood extent using Sentinel-1 radar imagery with Google Earth Engine. The methodology relies on change detection, comparing pre-event and post-event images. The change-detection method is based on the normalised difference ratio. Additionally, the HAND model is employed to delineate zones for processing only in flood-prone areas. The approach was tested and calibrated at a small scale to optimise parameters. In these calibration tests, an accuracy of 85% is achieved. The approach was then applied to the whole of the island of Madagascar after Cyclone Batsirai in 2022. The proposed method is enabled by the computing power and data availability of Google Earth Engine and Google Colab. The results show satisfactory accuracy in delineating flooded areas. The advantages of this approach are its rapidity, online availability and ability to detect floods over a wide area. The approach relying on Google Tools thus offers an effective solution for generating a large-scale synoptic picture to inform hazard management decision making. However, one of the method's drawbacks is that it depends to a large extent on frequent radar imagery being available at the time of flood events and on free access to the platform. Observation frequency is analyzed over four areas of the Mediterranean basis where poaching, illegal fishing, and illegal trafficking of goods and people are active. To this end, a geometrical observation and dynamical model is utilized which accounts for multiple satellites and multiple orbital planes and is applied to SIASGE and Sentinel-1 missions. The monitoring of Natura 2000 habitats (Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC) is a key activity ensuring the sufficient protection of European biodiversity. Reporting on the status of Natura 2000 habitats is required every 6 years. Although field mapping is still an indispensable source of data on the status of Natura 2000 habitats, and very good field-based data exist in some countries, keeping the field-based habitat maps up to date can be an issue. Remote sensing techniques represent an excellent alternative. Here, we present a new method for detecting habitats that were likely misclassified during the field mapping or that have changed since then. The method identifies the possible habitat mapping errors as the so-called "attribute outliers", i.e., outlying observations in the feature space of all relevant (spectral and other) characteristics of an individual habitat patch. We used the Czech Natura 2000 Habitat Layer as field-based habitat data. To prepare the feature space of habitat characteristics, we used a fusion of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite data along with a Digital Elevation Model. We compared outlier ratings using the robust Mahalanobis distance and Local Outlier Factor using three different thresholds (Tukey rule, histogram-based Scott's rule, and 95% quantiles in χ2 distribution). The Mahalanobis distance thresholded by the 95% χ2 quantile achieved the best results, and, because of its high specificity, appeared as a promising tool for identifying erroneously mapped or changed habitats. The presented method can, therefore, be used as a guide to target field updates of Natura 2000 habitat maps or for other habitat/land cover mapping activities where the detection of misclassifications or changes is needed. With China's fruit tree industry becoming the largest in the world, accurately understanding the spatial distribution of fruit tree growing areas is crucial for promoting socio-economic development and rural revitalization. Remote sensing offers unprecedented opportunities for fruit tree monitoring. However, previous research has mainly focused on UAV and near-ground remote sensing, with limited accuracy in obtaining fruit tree distribution information through satellite remote sensing. In this study, we utilized the Google Earth Engine (GEE) remote sensing cloud platform and integrated data from Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and SRTM sources. We constructed a feature space by extracting original band features, vegetation index features, polarization features, terrain features, and texture features. The sequential forward selection (SFS) algorithm was employed for feature optimization, and a combined machine learning and object-oriented classification model was used to accurately extract fruit tree crop distributions by comparing key temporal phases of fruit trees. The results revealed that the backscatter coefficient features from Sentinel-1 had the highest contribution to the classification, followed by the original band features and vegetation index features from Sentinel-2, while the terrain features had a relatively smaller contribution. The highest classification accuracy for jujube plantation areas was observed in November (99.1% for user accuracy and 96.6% for producer accuracy), whereas the lowest accuracy was found for pear tree plantation areas in the same month (93.4% for user accuracy and 89.0% for producer accuracy). Among the four different classification methods, the combined random forest and object-oriented (RF + OO) model exhibited the highest accuracy (OA = 0.94, Kappa = 0.92), while the support vector machine (SVM) classification method had the lowest accuracy (OA = 0.52, Kappa = 0.31). The total fruit tree plantation area in Aksu City in 2022 was estimated to be 64,000 hectares, with walnut, jujube, pear, and apple trees accounting for 42.5%, 20.6%, 19.3%, and 17.5% of the total fruit tree area, respectively (27,200 hectares, 13,200 hectares, 12,400 hectares, and 11,200 hectares, respectively). The SFS feature optimization and RF + OO-combined classification model algorithm selected in this study effectively mapped the fruit tree planting areas, enabling the estimation of fruit tree planting areas based on remote sensing satellite image data. This approach facilitates accurate fruit tree industry and real-time crop monitoring and provides valuable support for fruit tree planting management by the relevant departments. This paper presents the results of a study to determine the potential of radar imaging to detect classes of built-up areas defined in the Urban Atlas (UA) spatial database. The classes are distinguished by function and building density. In addition to the reflectance value itself, characteristics such as building density or spatial layout can improve the identification of these classes. In order to increase the classification possibilities and better exploit the potential of radar imagery, a grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) was generated to analyse the texture of built-up classes. Two types of synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images from different sensors were used as test data: Sentinel-1 and ICEYE, which were selected for their different setup configurations and parameters. Classification was carried out using the Random Forests (RF) and Minimum Distance (MD) methods. The use of the MD classifier resulted in an overall accuracy of 64% and 51% for Sentinel-1 and ICEYE, respectively. In ICEYE, individual objects (e.g. buildings) are better recognised than classes defined by their function or density, as in UA classes. Sentinel-1 performed better than ICEYE, with its texture images better complementing the features of urban area classes. This remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of urban areas in defining and characterising urban area classes. Automatic acquisition of training fields directly from UA is problematic and it is therefore advisable to independently obtain reference data for built-up area categories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rice is a staple food that feeds nearly half of the world's population. With the population of our planet expected to keep growing, it is crucial to carry out accurate mapping, monitoring, and assessments since these could significantly impact food security, climate change, spatial planning, and land management. Using the PRISMA systematic review protocol, this article identified and selected 122 scientific articles (journals papers and conference proceedings) addressing different remote sensing-based methodologies to map paddy croplands, published between 2010 and October 2022. This analysis includes full coverage of the mapping of rice paddies and their various stages of crop maturity. This review paper classifies the methods based on the data source: (a) multispectral (62%), (b) multisource (20%), and (c) radar (18%). Furthermore, it analyses the impact of machine learning on those methodologies and the most common algorithms used. We found that MODIS (28%), Sentinel-2 (18%), Sentinel-1 (15%), and Landsat-8 (11%) were the most used sensors. The impact of Sentinel-1 on multisource solutions is also increasing due to the potential of backscatter information to determine textures in different stages and decrease cloud cover constraints. The preferred solutions include phenology algorithms via the use of vegetation indices, setting thresholds, or applying machine learning algorithms to classify images. In terms of machine learning algorithms, random forest is the most used (17 times), followed by support vector machine (12 times) and isodata (7 times). With the continuous development of technology and computing, it is expected that solutions such as multisource solutions will emerge more frequently and cover larger areas in different locations and at a higher resolution. The objects presented in synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images are the products of the joint actions of ground objects and SAR sensors in specific geospatial contexts. With the accumulation of massive time-domain SAR data, scholars have the opportunity to better understand ground-object targets and sensor systems, providing some useful feedback for SAR-data processing. Aiming at normalized and low-cost SAR radiometric monitoring, this paper proposes a new hyper-pixel concept for handling multi-pixel ensembles of semantic ground targets. The special hyper-pixel in this study refers to low-rise single-family residential areas, and its radiation reference is highly stable in the time domain when the other dimensions are fixed. The stability of its radiometric data can reach the level of 0.3 dB (1 σ), as verified by the multi-temporal data from Sentinel-1. A comparison with tropical-rainforest data verified its availability for SAR radiometric monitoring, and possible radiation variations and radiation-intensity shifts in the Sentinel-1B SAR products ere experimentally monitored. In this paper, the effects of seasonal climate and of the relative geometrical states observed on the intensity of the hyper-pixel's radiation are investigated. This paper proposes a novel hyper-pixel concept for processing and interpreting SAR-image data. The proposed residential hyper-pixel is shown to be useful in multi-temporal-data observations for normalized radiometric monitoring and has the potential to be used for cross-calibration, in addition to other applications. The ash dieback pandemic, caused by the invasive fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, represents one of Europe's biggest threats to preserving natural biodiversity. To ensure the suppression of forest damage caused by fungi, timely recognition of the symptoms of ash dieback and further continuous monitoring on an adequate spatial scale are essential. Visual crown damage assessment is currently the most common method used for identifying ash dieback, but it lacks the spatial and temporal coverage required for effective disease suppression. Remote sensing technologies, with the capabilities of fast and repetitive retrieval of information over a large spatial scale, could present efficient supplementary methods for ash damage detection and disease monitoring. In this study, we provided a synthesis of the existing remote sensing methods and applications that considers ash dieback disease, and we described the lifecycle of the disease using the major symptoms that remote sensing technologies can identify. Unfortunately, although effective methods of monitoring biotic damage through remote sensing have been developed, ash dieback has only been addressed in two research studies in the United Kingdom and Germany. These studies were based on single-date hyperspectral and very-high-resolution imagery in combination with machine learning, using previously specified ground-truth information regarding crown damage status. However, no study exists using high-resolution imagery such as Sentinel-2 or radar Sentinel-1, although some preliminary project results show that these coarser sources of information could be applicable for ash dieback detection and monitoring in cases of Fraxinus angustifolia, which forms pure, more homogenous stands in Southern Europe. Crop type mapping visualizes the spatial distribution pattern and proportion of planting areas of different crop types, which is the basis for subsequent agricultural applications. Although optical remote sensing has been widely used to monitor crop dynamics, data are not always available due to cloud and other atmospheric effects on optical sensors. Satellite microwave systems such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) have all-time and all-weather advantages in monitoring ground and crop conditions, combining optical imagery and SAR imagery for crop type classification is of great significance. Our study mainly proposes seven feature combination schemes based on the combination of multi-temporal spectral features and texture features of Sentinel-2 (S2), and radar backscattering features of Sentinel-1 (S1) evaluate the influence of different data sources and different features on classification accuracy, obtains the optimal classification strategy and analyses the contribution of different features to classification result, in the aim of providing a new technical approach for the fine identification of crops from multi-source remote-sensing data. Results show that the crop classification accuracy of combined multi-time series spectral, texture, and radar features is higher than that of combining two types of features. The features subset selected by multi-period spectral, texture, and radar features have the best classification result, the overall accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficients reach 96.40% and 0.93, respectively. Corn (Zea mays L.) nitrogen (N) management requires monitoring plant N concentration (Nc) with remote sensing tools to improve N use, increasing both profitability and sustainability. This work aims to predict the corn Nc during the growing cycle from Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 (C-SAR) sensor data fusion. Eleven experiments using five fertilizer N rates (0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 kg N ha−1) were conducted in the Pampas region of Argentina. Plant samples were collected at four stages of vegetative and reproductive periods. Vegetation indices were calculated with new combinations of spectral bands, C-SAR backscatters, and sensor data fusion derived from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2. Predictive models of Nc with the best fit (R2 = 0.91) were calibrated with spectral band combinations and sensor data fusion in six experiments. During validation of the models in five experiments, sensor data fusion predicted corn Nc with lower error (MAPE: 14%, RMSE: 0.31 %Nc) than spectral band combination (MAPE: 20%, RMSE: 0.44 %Nc). The red-edge (704, 740, 740 nm), short-wave infrared (1375 nm) bands, and VV backscatter were all necessary to monitor corn Nc. This study investigates the sensibility of Sentinel-1 C-band backscatter to the moisture content of tree canopies over an area of about 500 km2 in north-western Portugal, with specific analysis over burnt areas. Sentinel-1 C-VV and C-VH backscatter values from 276 images acquired between January 2018 and December 2020 were assigned to five classes depending on the Drought Code (DC) scenario over several unburned and burned sites with total (>90%) forest canopy cover. Confounding variables such as tree cover and incidence angle were accounted for by masking using specific thresholds. The following results are discussed: (a) C-VV and C-VH backscatter values are inversely correlated (R2 = 0.324 to 0.438 −p < 0.001) with local incidence angle over canopies; (b) correlation is significantly stronger over very wet scenarios (DC class = 0 to 1); (c) C-VV and C-VH backscatter values can discriminate wet to dry forest environments, but they are less sensitive to the transition between dry (DC classes = 1 to 10, 10 to 100) and extremely dry environments (DC classes = 100 to 1000); (d) C-VH is more sensible than C-VV to capture burnt canopy; and (e) the C-VH polarization captures post-fire recovery after an average minimum period of 360 days after the fire event, although with less distinction for extremely wet soils. We conclude that C-band VH backscatter intensity decreases from wet to dry canopy conditions, that this behavior of the backscatter signal with respect to canopy dryness is lost after a fire event, and that after one year it is recovered. Lineament mapping is a very important step in geological studies and mineral exploration, with the evolution of remote sensing, processing methods as well as the availability of several optical and radar satellite data, lineaments can be detected without using traditional methods. The objective of this work is to recommend the most suitable data for lineaments to be used in the field of geological science, by comparing the performance of three different RADAR data, namely ALOS PALSAR (The Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar), Radarsat-1 and Sentinel-1 for automatic lineament extraction using a combination of edge detection and line linking algorithms. The methodology consists to link between the length, number, orientation and density of lineaments with surface characteristics such as the slope, faults, lithology, discontinuities and mineral veins. The results obtained show that the extracted lineaments from Sentinel-1 VH polarization have a better correlation with geological units, tectonic system direction, as well as shading and slope maps, which is due to the effectiveness of VH polarization, which is independent of soil properties compared to the other polarizations that have shown an overestimation of the lineaments. The aim of this work is to study the impact and characteristics of the meteorological phenomenon that occurred on May 20, 2020 in Vâlcea County, Romania. For this purpose, we used SAR radar images from the Sentinel-1 series at different dates, before, during and after the event. The methodology consists in exploiting and combining the two polarisations, VV and VH, of the recorded radar wave. The results obtained can be summarised as the extraction of areas completely covered by water and areas characterised by high roughness and very high humidity. The latter (roughness/humidity) can have two different origins. The first one corresponds to an area affected by downpours, giving a high roughness due to the interaction of water drops with the ground and also to the presence of hail, amplified by the wind factor. On the other hand, the second one coincides, quite simply, with the presence of a thundercloud, precisely a Cumulonimbus, which formed in that particular place as a result of the favourable geomorphological characteristics and meteorological conditions, giving a high humidity due to the high water content. We also determined the total impacted area of about 96.71 km2, whose 60.17 km2 of water covered area, which is 2.45% of the study area. Dual-pol Shannon Entropy captures the dynamic crop growth parameters. It was used to evaluate biophysical parameters of important crops using Sentinel-1 data. Improved phenology information is vital input to crop-growth models. Mustard experienced increase as it advanced in phenology but for wheat, decreased due to absorption. A significant relationship at initial crop stages (height < 150 cm and biomass < 5 kg m−2) R2 =0.65 between Shannon Entropy (SE) and crop parameters, though less strong (R2=0.33) for entire mustard cycle and wheat (plant height < 80 cm and biomass < 6 kg m−2) was observed. The SE appeared sensitive to low-medium biomass and useful in monitoring crop phenology in low biomass and initial phenophases. The dynamic crop profile is manifested conjunctively as Radar Vegetation Index (RVI). Random Forest Regression (RFR) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) were evaluated to predict the phenophases. Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) emerged as a powerful algorithm since last decade in many applications. However, it is not fully explored in remote sensing applications, especially for predicting plant biophysical variables in the heterogeneous environment of India. This kernel-based machine learning technique has effectively replaced conventional approaches for estimating vegetation characteristics from remotely sensed data. In this work, an attempt has been made to test the ability of GPR to estimate the leaf area index (LAI) of wheat crops using the Sentinel-1 (S1) derived Dual-Polarized Radar Vegetation Index (DpRVI) and Sentinel-2 (S2) Top of Atmosphere (TOA) products. Further, the ability of the atmospheric correction procedure was tested by S2 Bottom of Atmosphere (BOA) images. To accomplish this, the field measurements of LAI were carried out from January to March 2020. Further comparisons of the GPR's performance were made with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) coupled with the PROSAIL (PROSPECT+SAIL) radiative transfer model, available through the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) Biophysical processor. The accuracy of the estimated LAI was evaluated using the statistical indicators, for example, coefficient of determination (R2), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Nash Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE). The results showed that the synergy of the GPR and DpRVI provided the most accurate result (R2 = 0.822, RMSE = 0.503 m2 m−2, NSE = 0.831) as compared to the GPR and TOA (R2 = 0.816, RMSE = 0.596 m2 m−2, NSE = 0.803) and SNAP biophysical processor (based on ANN) (R2 = 0.696, RMSE = 0.760 m2 m−2, NSE = 0.578). Therefore, the study demonstrated the importance of S1 SAR images and GPR as an alternative tool among the other well-established machine learning algorithms to estimate the crop biophysical parameters. Obtaining soil water content and soil workability data using remote sensing technology with passive sensors has some limitations due to cloud cover, cloud shadow, haze and smoke. This study proposes a method for computing soil water content and soil workability over large areas, faster and in near real-time based on Sentinel-1A (SAR) data. Sample data collected from sugarcane plantations in the Kediri and Sidoarjo districts in East Java, Indonesia, were used to develop a mathematical model of the proposed method using multi-polynomial regression. The performance indicators of the model (RMSE, MAPE and accuracy) were calculated with the results of RMSE = 0.213 and 0.250, MAPE = 16.39% and 18.79%, and accuracy = 83.6% and 81.2% for the training and testing models, respectively. The distribution of soil water content and soil workability can be computed and visualized using a spatial map. The future contribution of this work is to develop a decision support system for the selection of appropriate machinery for sugarcane field operations based on the principles of precision agriculture. Selective logging is a major cause of forest degradation in the tropics, but its precise scale, location and timing are not known as wide-area, automated remote sensing methods are not yet available at this scale. This limits the abilities of governments to police illegal logging, or monitor (and thus receive payments for) reductions in degradation. Sentinel-1, a C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite mission with a 12-day repeat time across the tropics, is a promising tool for this due to the known appearance of shadows in images where canopy trees are removed. However, previous work has relied on optical satellite data for calibration and validation, which has inherent uncertainties, leaving unanswered questions about the minimum magnitude and area of canopy loss this method can detect. Here, we use a novel bi-temporal LiDAR dataset in a forest degradation experiment in Gabon to show that canopy gaps as small as 0.02 ha (two 10 m × 10 m pixels) can be detected by Sentinel-1. The accuracy of our algorithm was highest when using a timeseries of 50 images over 20 months and no multilooking. With these parameters, canopy gaps in our study site were detected with a false alarm rate of 6.2%, a missed detection rate of 12.2%, and were assigned disturbance dates that were a good qualitative match to logging records. The presence of geolocation errors and false alarms makes this method unsuitable for confirming individual disturbances. However, we found a linear relationship ( r 2 = 0.74 ) between the area of detected Sentinel-1 shadow and LiDAR-based canopy loss at a scale of 1 hectare. By applying our method to three years' worth of imagery over Gabon, we produce the first national scale map of small-magnitude canopy cover loss. We estimate a total gross canopy cover loss of 0.31 Mha, or 1.3% of Gabon's forested area, which is a far larger area of change than shown in currently available forest loss alert systems using Landsat (0.022 Mha) and Sentinel-1 (0.019 Mha). Our results, which are made accessible through Google Earth Engine, suggest that this approach could be used to quantify the magnitude and timing of degradation more widely across tropical forests. Due to extreme weather, occasionally Hungary’s main rivers and lakes grow an ice cover causing severe damage to infrastructure and increased flood hazard. During cold periods in 2017 and 2022, a dangerous layer of ice developed on the main rivers in the country. Since river ice is rare in this region, no permanent ice monitoring system is in operation. Due to their all weather capabilities, active remote sensing instruments provide a good opportunity to monitor ice coverage. ESA’s Sentinel-1 radar satellites acquire data with a relatively high spatial and temporal resolution. A method was developed to provide ice coverage information at a regular interval; depending on the satellite revisit, at least once every 5 days, but often also on a daily basis. In 2017, maps were created for sections along the Danube and in 2022 for another section of the Tisza river. The ice coverage was calculated with a spatial resolution of 10 metre and visualised with a spatial density of 100 metre along the rivers. The mapping procedure provides visual information to give a fast overview of the spatial extent of ice coverage and quantitative, tabular information for operational activities to mitigate the damage due to ice packs and ice jams. According to the remote sensing monitoring method of the ground deformation before mine landslide, the discrimination basis of the reliability of different orbit SAR data sets was proposed, and the inducing factors of landslide were analyzed. Taking the slope of the Anqian Yabaling open-pit mine in Anshan city as an example, using 44 Sentinel-1 radar images(two groups of ascending orbits and one group of descending orbit), the time series InSAR method was used to analyze the surface movement characteristics of the slope 6 months before the landslide occurred on November 25, 2019. The results show that the monitoring results obtained by different orbit data sets in the same studied area are different. The position of the top and rear edge of the landslide area showed an unusually strong acceleration within a period of time(approximately 45 days) before the landslide. Fire is one of the significant drivers of vegetation loss and threat to Amazonian landscapes. It is estimated that fires cause about 30% of deforested areas, so the severity level is an important factor in determining the rate of vegetation recovery. Therefore, the application of remote sensing to detect fires and their severity is fundamental. Radar imagery has an advantage over optical imagery because radar can penetrate clouds, smoke, and rain and can see at night. This research presents algorithms for mapping the severity level of burns based on change detection from Sentinel-1 backscatter data in the southeastern Peruvian Amazon. Absolute, relative, and Radar Forest Degradation Index (RDFI) predictors were used through singular polarization length (dB) patterns (Vertical, Vertical-VV and Horizontal, Horizontal-HH) of vegetation and burned areas. The Composite Burn Index (CBI) determined the algorithms' accuracy. The burn severity ratios used were estimated to be approximately 40% at the high level, 43% at the moderate level, and 17% at the low level. The validation dataset covers 384 locations representing the main areas affected by fires, showing the absolute and relative predictors of cross-polarization (k = 0.734) and RDFI (k = 0.799) as the most concordant in determining burn severity. The reliability of crop-growth modelling is related to the accuracy of the information used to describe the agricultural growing phases. A proper knowledge of sowing periods has a significant impact on the effectiveness of any analysis based on modeled crop growth. In this work, an estimation of maize actual sowing periods for year 2019 is presented, combining the optical and radar information from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2. The crop classification was conducted according to the information provided by local public authorities over an area of 30 km × 30 km, and 1154 maize fields were considered within the analysis. The combined use of NDVI and radar time series enabled a high-resolution assessment of sowing periods and the description of maize emergence through the soil, by detecting changes in the ground surface geometry. A radar-based index was introduced to detect the periods when plants emerge through the soil, and the sowing periods were retrieved considering the thermal energy needed by seeds to germinate and the daily temperatures before the emergence. Results show that 52% of maize hectares were sowed in late April, while about 30% were sowed during the second half of May. Sentinel-1 appears more suitable to describe the late growing phase of maize, since the radar backscattering is sensitive to the dry biomass of plants while the NDVI decreases because of the chromatic change of leaves. Data assimilation techniques allow researchers to optimally merge remote sensing observations in ecohydrological models, guiding them for improving land surface fluxes predictions. Presently, freely available remote sensing products, such as those of Sentinel 1 radar, Landsat 8 sensors, and Sentinel 2 sensors, allow the monitoring of land surface variables (e.g., radar backscatter for soil moisture and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and for leaf area index (LAI)) at unprecedentedly high spatial and time resolutions, appropriate for heterogeneous ecosystems, typical of semiarid ecosystems characterized by contrasting vegetation components (grass and trees) competing for water use. A multiscale assimilation approach that assimilates radar backscatter and grass and tree NDVI in a coupled vegetation dynamic–land surface model is proposed. It is based on the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), and it is not limited to assimilating remote sensing data for model predictions, but it uses assimilated data for dynamically updating key model parameters (the ENKFdc approach), including saturated hydraulic conductivity and grass and tree maintenance respiration coefficients, which are highly sensitive parameters of soil–water balance and biomass budget models, respectively. The proposed EnKFdc assimilation approach facilitated good predictions of soil moisture, grass, and tree LAI in a heterogeneous ecosystem in Sardinia for a 3-year period with contrasting hydrometeorological (dry vs. wet) conditions. Contrary to the EnKF-based approach, the proposed EnKFdc approach performed well for the full range of hydrometeorological conditions and parameters, even assuming extremely biased model conditions with very high or low parameter values compared with the calibrated ("true") values. The EnKFdc approach is crucial for soil moisture and LAI predictions in winter and spring, key seasons for water resources management in Mediterranean water-limited ecosystems. The use of ENKFdc also enabled us to predict evapotranspiration and carbon flux well, with errors of less than 4% and 15%, respectively; such results were obtained even with extremely biased initial model conditions. This paper shows the work carried out to obtain a methodology capable of monitoring the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) aid line for the protection of steppe birds, which aims to improve the feeding and breeding conditions of these species and contribute to the improvement of their overall biodiversity population. Two methodologies were initially defined, one based on remote sensing (BirdsEO) and the other on Machine Learning (BirdsML). Both use Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data as a basis. BirdsEO encountered certain impediments caused by the land's slope and the crop's height. Finally, the methodology based on Machine Learning offered the best results. It evaluated the performance of up to 7 different Machine Learning classifiers, the most optimal being RandomForest. Fourteen different datasets were generated, and the results they offered were evaluated, the most optimal being the one with more than 150 features, including a time series of 8 elements with Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 data and derived products, among others. The generated model provided values higher than 97% in metrics such as accuracy, recall and Area under the ROC Curve, and 95% in precision and recall. The methodology is transformed into a tool that continuously monitors 100% of the area requesting aid, continuously over time, which contributes positively to optimizing the use of administrative resources and a fairer distribution of CAP funds. Distinguishing between lava types and facies using remote sensing data is important for interpreting the emplacement history of lava flow‐fields on Earth and other planetary bodies. Lava facies typically include a mixture of lava types and record the collective emplacement history of material preserved at a particular location. We seek to determine if lava facies in the 2014–2015 Holuhraun lava flow‐field are discernible using radar roughness analysis. Furthermore, we also seek to distinguish between lava types using high resolution Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. We extracted circular polarization ratios (CPR) from the Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar and cross‐polarization (VH/VV) data from the Sentinel‐1 satellite to analyze the surface roughness of three previously mapped lava facies: rubbly, spiny, and undifferentiated rubbly–spiny. Using the Kruskal‐Wallis test, we reveal that all but one pair of the facies are statistically separable. However, the populations overlap by 88%–89% for CPR and 64%–67% for VH/VV. Therefore, owing to large sample populations (n > 2 × 105), slight differences in radar data may be used to probabilistically infer the presence of a particular facies, but not directly map them. We also calculated the root‐mean‐square slope and Hurst exponents of five different lava types using LiDAR topography (5 cm/pixel). Our results show minute differences between most of the lava types, with the exception of the rubbly pāhoehoe, which is discernible at 1σ. In brief, the presence of "transitional" lava types (e.g., rubbly pāhoehoe) within fissure‐fed lava flow‐fields complicates remote sensing‐based mapping. Plain Language Summary: The characteristics of geologically recent lava flow‐fields inform our understanding magmatic and volcanic processes on Earth and other terrestrial planetary bodies. Fissure‐fed lava flow‐fields, like the 2014–2015 Holuhraun lava flow‐field in Iceland, include "transitional" surface textures formed from the disruption of solidified crusts. The resulting lava types form in multiple stages, which modify and mix the surfaces, making them challenging to map. At reasonable scales (e.g., 1:800, where 1 mm on the map equates to 80 cm on the ground), mappable units, or "facies," include a mixture of lava types. On Earth, field observations may be used to identify lava types within such facies, but in remote, inaccessible locations on Earth, and on the surface of other planetary bodies, we can only study lava flow‐fields using data collected from orbiting spacecraft. We seek to determine if lava facies and their constituent lava types in a setting with generally rough surfaces can be differentiated using radar and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. We find we are not able to separate the major lava facies using radar data, and few lava types can be discerned using decimeter‐scale LiDAR topography data. The surface characteristics of the lava flow‐field are therefore complex, and it is important to recognize the limitations of automated mapping techniques for mapping the distribution of materials within similar fissure‐fed lava flow fields on Earth and other planets using solely radar and LiDAR data. Developments in sensor technology called Synthetic Antenna Radar (SAR) and associated data processing software have helped satellite radar interferometry (InSAR), a method that uses multiple SAR images of the same area collected from satellites, to become a widely used method for estimating soil deformation as well as other geophysical processes, because it provides millimeter precision with great spatial coverage. The paper deals with 24 Sentinel-1A images for the area of western Herzegovina, taken during 2020, and determined the average speeds of vertical displacements using the SNAP program (Sentinel Application Platform). Vertical displacements of ± 10 millimeters were recorded, while the mean annual displacement velocities were 8 millimeters in the vertical direction, without taking into account the correction for the influence of horizontal displacements. The first results in the study area indicate a trend of ground movement, but due to several types of atmospheric corrections, geomorphological characteristics of the study area and lack of in-situ measurements for comparison, external evaluation of the reliability of deformations will have to be assessed in future studies. We present a method to combine CryoSat-2 (CS2) radar altimeter and Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to obtain sea ice thickness (SIT) estimates for the Barents and Kara seas. From the viewpoint of tactical navigation, along-track altimeter SIT estimates are sparse, and the goal of our study is to develop a method to interpolate altimeter SIT measurements between CS2 ground tracks. The SIT estimation method developed here is based on the interpolation of CS2 SIT utilizing SAR segmentation and segmentwise SAR texture features. The SIT results are compared to SIT data derived from the AARI ice charts; to ORAS5, PIOMAS and TOPAZ4 ocean–sea ice data assimilation system reanalyses; to combined CS2 and Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) radiometer weekly SIT (CS2SMOS SIT) charts; and to the daily MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) SIT chart. We studied two approaches: CS2 directly interpolated to SAR segments and CS2 SIT interpolated to SAR segments with mapping of the CS2 SIT distributions to correspond to SIT distribution of the PIOMAS ice model. Our approaches yield larger spatial coverage and better accuracy compared to SIT estimates based on either CS2 or SAR data alone. The agreement with modelled SIT is better than with the CS2SMOS SIT. The average differences when compared to ice models and the AARI ice chart SIT were typically tens of centimetres, and there was a significant positive bias when compared to the AARI SIT (on average 27 cm) and a similar bias (24 cm) when compared to the CS2SMOS SIT. Spatiotemporal distribution of soil moisture is important for hydrometeorological and agricultural applications. There is growing interest in monitoring soil moisture in relation to soil- and land-based natural flood management (NFM), to understand the soil’s ability, via land-use and management changes, and to delay the arrival of flood peaks in nearby watercourses. This article monitors relative surface soil moisture (rSSM) across the Thames Valley, U.K., using Sentinel-1 data, and the Vienna University of Technology (TU-Wien) Change Detection Algorithm, with a novel exploration of monthly and annual normalization factors and spatial averaging. Two pairs of normalization factors are introduced to remove impacts from varying local incidence angles through direct and multiple regression slopes. The spatiotemporal distribution of rSSM values at various spatial resolutions (1000, 500, 250, and 100 m) is assessed. Comparisons with in situ soil moisture data from the COSMOS-UK network show that, while general temporal trends agree, the difference in effective depth of measurements, coupled with vegetation impacts during the growing season, makes comparison with soil moisture observations difficult. Temporal rSSM trends can be retrieved at spatial resolutions down to 100 m, and the rSSM RMSE was found to decrease as the spatial resolution increases. The vegetation effects upon the rSSM are further explored by comparing the two dominant land cover types: Arable and Horticulture, and Improved Grassland. It was found that, while the rSSM retrieval for these land covers was possible, and the general soil moisture trend is clear, overlying vegetation during the summer artificially increased the rSSM values. Wheat and rapeseed are significant crops in Czech agriculture and remote sensing has huge potential for their management, given Sentinel-1 can overcome issues of cloudiness and monitor vegetation development via radar backscatter. This study compares radar and optical data characterizing the development of wheat and rapeseed in an agricultural cooperative in the Czech Republic. Radar Vegetation Index (RVI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time-series of the main vegetation seasons between 2015 and 2018 are processed, analysed, and compared with each other. In 2018, the comparison of data with ground measurement by camera was also used. The temporal development of RVI is affected by noise, which is caused by the composition of imagery from different Relative orbits. The separation of imagery according to the Relative orbit used seemed to provide results more comparable to the phenological curve. Simple linear regression between NDVI and RVI illustrated that considering Relative orbit can slightly increase the Coefficient of determination. By selecting a suitable Relative orbit, the coefficient of determination between NDVI and RVI increased from 0.281 to 0.387 in the case of wheat and from 0.233 to 0.316 in the case of rape monitoring. The RVI for rapeseed and the height of canopy correlation was 0.392. The results for RVI presented in this article demonstrated that monitoring wheat and rapeseed development by Sentinel-1 has potential, however more research needs to be conducted in the areas of spatial and temporal noise removal. In complex electromagnetic environments, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is severely affected by radio frequency interference (RFI) from other systems, such as ground-based radar, cellular networks, and global positioning systems, and this interference cannot be neglected. Pulse RFI (PRFI), a common form of RFI, can hinder SAR signal processing and image interpretation to varying degrees. The time-domain notch filtering method designed for mitigating PRFI can locate and mitigate the evident PRFI covered in SAR echo data, but it is helpless against PRFI hidden in a strong echo signal. In this article, a three-step approach is proposed to tackle the PRFI problem. In the proposed approach, the first step is to detect and locate PRFI; this is based on eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) and the short-time Fourier transform (STFT). The second step is to notch PRFI, and this is based on a time-domain notch filter. The third step is to recover the notched signal using a novel matrix completion strategy, which integrates with a robust low-rank matrix completion (LRMC) technique—i.e.,the singular value thresholding (SVT) algorithm—and a well-known Lagrange interpolation technique. Experimental results via simulated SAR data, Sentinel-1 level-0 raw data, and L-band airborne SAR raw data demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on how to use satellite interferometry to detect linear discontinuous ground deformation [LDGD] caused by underground mining. Assumptions were made based on the properties of the SAR signal correlation coefficient (coherence). Places of LDGD have been identified based on these assumptions. Changes taking place on the surface between two acquisitions lead to worse correlation between two radar images. This results in lower values of the SAR signal correlation coefficient in the coherence maps. Therefore, it was assumed that the formation of LDGD could reduce the coherence value compared to the previous state. The second assumption was an increase in the standard deviation of coherence, which is a classic measurement of variability. Therefore any changes in the surface should lead to increasing standard deviation of coherence compared to the previous state. Images from the Sentinel-1 satellite and provided by the ESA were used for analysis. The research is presented on the basis of two research areas located in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin in the south of Poland. The area in which LDGD could occur was limited to 6 % of the total area in case 1 and 36 % in case 2 by applying an appropriate methodology of satellite image coherence analysis. Radio spectrum bands allocated to spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery are shared by multiple missions. In practical radio spectrum environments, these bands are also used by some ground radars, e.g., C-band weather radar. Due to this fact, radio frequency interference (RFI) may occur for a spaceborne SAR when its received signals contain the transmitted waveforms from another SAR or radar operating at the same frequency band. This particular class of RFI is usually linear-frequency-modulation (LFM) signals, which can cause bright radiometric artifacts in focused SAR images. Most existing signal processing approaches designed for addressing this problem belong to the class of preprocessing methods, which removes RFI in level-0 raw radar data before SAR focusing. In this article, we propose a postprocessing kernel—2-D SPECtral ANalysis (2-D SPECAN) filter, for removing the class of LFM RFI in level-1 SLC images. The filtering consists of three main steps: Step 1: focus LFM RFI artifacts in SLC images as point-like responses in the spectral domain via 2-D SPECAN; Step 2: perform 2-D notch filtering in the spectral domain to remove the most contribution of the RFI responses; and Step 3: transform the filtered spectrum back into the SLC image domain using the inverse operation of the 2-D SPECAN. For computation efficiency, we design a simplified processing flow and adopt a blockwise processing strategy. Experiments with several Sentinel-1 SLC images demonstrate that severe RFI artifacts in SLC images can be removed significantly by the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Remote sensing based retrieved of soil moisture from low frequency passive microwave observations is preferred in different aspects such as better spatial coverage and more measurement compared to traditional ground-based measurements. However, due to coarse spatial resolution of the observations, their applications are limited in local to regional studies. This paper provides a framework using random forest regression to disaggregate the daily SMAP enhanced soil moisture (SPL3SMP_E) utilizing several ancillary data to overcome the spatial resolution limits and cloudiness effects. Ancillaries were acquired from sentinel-1 radar, MODIS monthly NDVI, land cover, topography, and surface soil properties. To validate the downscaled results with 1-km spatial resolution, the OZNET soil moisture measurements and sparse TDR ground soil moisture measurements were collected from Murrumbidgee catchment (Australia) and Firozabad catchment (Iran), respectively. Downscaled soil moisture product unbiased root-mean-square error (UnbRMSE) of ensemble learning demonstrated a range of 0.023 and –0.07 cm3/cm3. The produced downscaled soil moisture exhibited better local heterogeneity when compared to the coarse data and tracked the dynamics of temporal changes in soil moisture. Furthermore, cumulative distribution function (CDF) analysis showed good accuracy of downscaled soil moisture in grassland and cropland. Radio signals emitted by various sources, such as ground radars and broadcast/communication devices, can unintentionally cause radio frequency interference (RFI) to spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR), degrading SAR image qualities to various degrees. Most existing methods tackle this problem by applying specially designed preprocessing steps to RFI-polluted level-0 SAR data before SAR focusing. However, such preprocessing is not widely used in spaceborne SAR, as there exist radiometric artifacts due to various RFI sources in the level-1 single-look complex (SLC) image products in many spaceborne SAR data, e.g., Sentinel-1 open data archives. To address this problem, in this article, we first propose a generic subspace model for characterizing a variety of RFI types, which reveals a low-dimensional structure of RFI subspace. Based on the proposed model, we next design a block subspace filter (BSF) for removing RFI artifacts in SLC SAR images directly. Experiments with ERS-2, ENVISAT/ASAR, Sentinel-1, and Gaofen-3 data are presented, and quantitative assessments based on numerical simulations are provided, which demonstrates the promising performance and application potentials of the proposed method. BSF is simple yet efficient and does not require performing preprocessing on level-0 raw data, which is helpful for users to obtain clean SAR images. Glaciers are a critical source of freshwater, especially during the lean season. Globally, the glaciers are losing their mass balance rapidly under the influence of climate change. In view of this, the regular study of these glaciers is very vital. However, field-based studies of most of the glaciers is a daunting task. On the contrary, emerging geospatial technology may play an important role in the studies of glaciers. The equilibrium line altitude (ELA) of the glaciers has been considered an essential indicator of climate change. There are numerous methods to delineate the equilibrium line of a glacier; however, each has its own merits and demerits. In the present study, the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remote sensing-based approach has been used for identifying the ELA of glaciers in the Ala-Archa River catchment of Kyrgyzstan from 2015 - 2019. Initially, the glacier radar zonesweremapped using the Sentinel-1 SAR datasets of each year under consideration. It was found that mainly the middle percolation, lower percolation, and bare-ice zones along with debris cover-ice are present in the glaciers. It was observed that the percolation refreeze zone covers approximately 40%, and the Bare-Ice zone covers 48% of the total area. Considering the boundary of lower percolation and bare-ice zone as ELA, the ELA of each glacier in each year was estimated. The lowest ELA of 3462 m was observed in 2018, whereas the highest (4309 m) was recorded in 2019. It was noticed that the trend of ELA is consistently increased from 3839.25 m in 2015 up to in 3868.29 m 2019. The temporal analysis of glacier radar zone estimation and ELA may help in studying the impact of climate change on glacier retreat and mass balance change. It can be concluded that geospatial techniques can make the glacier change studies possible without field survey. However, to validate the results of the study, field observations are a must. Objectives: The Sichuan-Tibet railway is not only a state key project in China, but also the most difficult super project in railway construction history due to the most complex terrain and the active geological structure. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has proved to be a critical tool for detecting and monitoring geohazards because of its wide coverage, high precision, and high efficiency. However, due to its side-looking geometry, InSAR faces serious geometric distortions in mountainous areas, particularly in extremely steep high mountain and gorge areas along the Sichuan-Tibet railway. Methods: Utilizing the full open-access Sentinel⁃1 data, which has the wide coverage and a short revisiting time, we carry out satellite radar geometric distortion and feasibility analyses along the Sichuan-Tibet railway. Taking into account synthetic aperture radar(SAR) imaging geometry, the variations of the incidence angles across the whole SAR image, and the passive geometric distortions, we present an integrated approach to accurately determine the areas with SAR geometric distortions. Results: Our results for Sentinel-1 data show that the areas with geometric distortions for observations with a single-orbit (i.e. ascending or descending) reach 31%—35% along the Sichuan-Tibet railway, whilst the geometric distortion areas reduce to 1.5% for observations with both ascending and descending orbits; furthermore, about 35% of the whole area is suitable for joint analyses with both ascending and descending observations. Conclusions: The quantitative result also reveals the feasibility to use the Sentinel-1 data to detect and monitor geohazards along the Sichuan-Tibet railway from the perspective of geometric distortions. It can not only improve the overall understanding of the applicability of Sentinel-1 based InSAR and the InSAR results interpretation in this area, but also provide a guideline for efficiently selecting other satellite SAR datasets for detecting and monitoring geological disasters along the Sichuan-Tibet railway. This study evaluated the effectiveness of various remote sensing (RS) data (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Landsat 8) in the early recognition of irrigated areas in a densely cultivated area of central Italy. The study was based on crop data collected on more than 2000 plots in 2016 and 2017, characterized by quite different climatic conditions. The different RS data sources were used both alone and combined and with precipitation to define corresponding random forest (RF) classifiers whose overall accuracy (OA) was assessed by gradually increasing the number of available features from the beginning of the irrigation season. All tested RF classifiers reach stable OAs (OA 0.9) after 7-8 weeks from the start of the irrigation season. The performance of the radar indexes slightly improves when used in combination with precipitation data, but three weeks of features are required to obtain OA above 80%. The optical indices alone (Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8) reach OA ?85% in the first week of observation. However, they are ineffective in cloudy conditions or when rainfed and irrigated fields have similar vigour. The most effective and robust indices are those based on combined sources (radar, optical, and meteorological), allowing OAs of about 92% and 96% at the beginning and in the middle of the irrigation season, respectively. In recent years there has been a growing interest in detecting, delimit and inventory wetlands under an ecohydrogeomorphic approach to expand the knowledge of these ecosystems and enable the development of management guidelines for their use. The aim of this article is detect and delimit those sectors that reflect favorable ecohydrogeomorphic conditions to define them as wetlands in a sector of the Alsina basin located in the southwest of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. A complementary methodology was applied between optiand radar images, consisting of the use of a digital AlosPalsar elevation model and Sentinel 2 A and Sentinel 1 images. A flood pulse was addressed in the shallow lake that occurred in 2017. The wet events reflect the operation of the shallow lake and the wetland systems. Biophysical changes that occurred in the perilaguna sectors were analyzed in reference to the entry of precipitations. The results verified the presence of different types of wetlands between the shallow lake and its perilagunar area that during a flood function as a hybrid ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Irrigation can be responsible for salt accumulation in the root zone of grapevines when late autumn and winter precipitation is not enough to leach salts from the soil upper horizons, turning the soil unsuitable for grape production. The aim of this work is to present a novel methodology to outline areas, within a drip-irrigated vineyard, with a low soil moisture content (SMC) during, and after, an 11-month agricultural drought. Soil moisture (SM) field measurements were performed in two plots at the vineyard, followed by a geostatistical method (indicator kriging) to estimate the SM class probabilities according to a threshold value, enlarging the training set for the classification algorithms. The logistic regression (LR) and Random Forest (RF) methods used the features of the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 images and terrain parameters to classify the SMC probabilities at the vineyard. Both methods classified the highest SMC probabilities above 14% that is located close to the stream at the lower altitudes. The RF method performed very well in classifying the topsoil zones with a lower SMC during the autumn-winter period. This delineation allows the prevention of the occurrence of areas affected by salinisation, indicating which areas will need irrigation management strategies to control the salinity, especially under climate change, and the expected increase in droughts. Soil organic matter (SOM) plays an extremely important role in soil formation, soil fertility, environmental protection and the sustainable development of agriculture and forestry, especially in areas with fertile black soil. Remote sensing technology has unique advantages in SOM mapping and can quickly and accurately obtain SOM spatial distribution maps at a low cost. However, the current methods available for fusing radar data, optical data and environmental covariates for use in SOM mapping are far from sufficient. The study area is Youyi Farm, a typical black-soil area in Northeast China. Multiyear monthly composites of the bare-soil periods (April and May) from 2019 to 2022 in the study area were created in the Google Earth Engine (GEE), including VH-polarized and VV-polarized Sentinel-1 radar data, 10 spectral bands of Sentinel-2 data, elevation and slope terms representing terrain covariates, and multiyear average precipitation and temperature data representing climate covariates. SOM was mapped in the study area based on 188 cultivated-layer (0–20 cm) sampling points combined with a random forest regression algorithm, and the SOM mapping accuracies of different strategies were evaluated. The results show that 1) the SOM mapping accuracy obtained using Sentinel-1 data combined with Sentinel-2 data was improved slightly compared to that obtained using Sentinel-2 data only, with improvements observed mainly in the prediction accuracies of areas with SOM contents below 5 %; 2) the highest accuracy was obtained by using the May composite image, while the April and May composite images reduced the accuracy; 3) adding environmental covariates greatly improved the SOM mapping accuracy, with the highest R2 being 0.696 and the lowest RMSE being 0.712 %; and 4) the importance of climate covariates was found to be higher than that of terrain covariates.
