This paper examines the problem of synthesizing a two-loop control system for a three-phase voltage source inverter designed for an autonomous power supply system. This type of DC/AC converters is an essential part of power supply systems with renewable energy sources as primary sources, and, accordingly, must corresponds to the requirements for the electric power quality. These requirements are met through circuit design solutions, as well as through the construction of high-precision automatic control systems. The system integrates: a hydrogen electrolyzer, a hydrogen storage system, and a hydrogen fuel cell. The paper proposes a method for calculating the parameters of PI controllers with resonant components, based on the time-scale separation method and allowing independent adjustment of the controller components. The introduction of a resonant component ensures high tracking accuracy for a desired main voltage harmonic and selective suppression of external harmonic influences. The escalating demand for renewable energy solutions and the imperative for efficient energy storage mechanisms have catalyzed the evolution of Power-to-X (PtX) technologies. Germany has the most PtX projects, accounting for 44% of all projects that have been reported. PtX encompasses a spectrum of processes engineered to convert surplus renewable energy into versatile energy carriers or chemical commodities, such as hydrogen, methane, or synthetic fuels. Inverter-driven generation units (IDGUs) based on renewable energy sources (RES) are actively integrated into electric power systems (EPSs) as a part of carbon neutrality development vector. RES units based on solar energy (photovoltaic power plants (PvPPs)) connected to hydrogen-based electric energy storage system (EESS) have been being actively introduced recently. For connection of modern PvPPs and hydrogen-based EESS (HESS) to grid electric power converters (EPC) are used. Large-scale implementation of these devices causes changes of EPS dynamic properties due to properties of inverting EPCs and their automatic control systems. To study and analyze these properties mathematical modelling can be used. Software on calculation of electromechanical transients is usually used for modelling transient processes. In such software generic mathematical models are developed and used to calculate transients in EPSs with PvPPs and HESSs. These models have a number of features due to which the full range of processes accompanying implementation of PvPPs and HESSs into weak grids cannot be simulated. South Africa is an energy-intensive developing country in Africa and ranked as the 1st and 14th emitter of greenhouse gas (GHG) in Africa and the world, respectively. The abundance and availability of coal in South Africa make it the mainstay primary source of energy contributing 56% of national total GHG emissions. This paper focused on the duo of energy generation and emission associated with coal processing and utilization in South Africa, and the urgent need to advance coal processing technologies marked by high carbon footprints in consonance with the sustainable development goals. Different gasification techniques and their performances have been compiled and discussed. The economic, environmental impact, energetic, and exergetic characteristics of existing hydrogen production technologies for renewable and non-renewable energy sources have been examined along with hydrogen production from plasma gasification of coal. Hydrogen production via coal or coal/biomass plasma gasification technology (nuclear-, wind-, PV solar-, and concentrated solar power-driven) in addition to carbon capture technology for transforming the captured CO 2 into value-added products appears to be the most viable option to considerably reduce emissions and meet the energy demand of South Africa. This proposed technology can be pivotal to achieving a low-carbon economy (medium-term) and transition to hydrogen economy (long-term) as championed by the global sustainable development agenda. This paper deals with the optimal scheduling of the resources of a renewable energy community, whose coordination is aimed at providing flexibility services to the electrical distribution network. The available resources are renewable generation units, battery energy storage systems, dispatchable loads, and power-to-hydrogen systems. The main purposes behind the proposed strategy are enhancement of self-consumption and hydrogen production from local resources and the maximization of the economic benefits derived from both the selling of hydrogen and the subsidies given to the community for the shared energy. The proposed approach is formulated as an economic problem accounting for the perspectives of both community members and the distribution system operator. In more detail, a mixed-integer constrained non-linear optimization problem is formulated. Technical constraints related to the resources and the power flows in the electrical grid are considered. Numerical applications allow for verifying the effectiveness of the procedure. The results show that it is possible to increase self-consumption and the production of green hydrogen while providing flexibility services through the exploitation of community resources in terms of active and reactive power support. More specifically, the application of the proposed strategy to different case studies showed that daily revenues of up to EUR 1000 for each MW of renewable energy generation installed can be obtained. Hydrogen-powered mobility is believed to be crucial in the future, as hydrogen constitutes a promising solution to make up for the non-programmable character of the renewable energy sources. In this context, the hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine represents one of the suitable technical solutions for the future of sustainable mobility. As a matter of fact, hydrogen engines suffer from limitations in volumetric efficiency due to the very low density of the fuel. Consequently, hydrogen-fueled ICEs can reach sufficient torque and power density only if suitable supercharging solutions are developed. Moreover, gaseous-engine performance can be improved to a great extent if direct injection is applied. In this perspective, a remarkable know-how has been developed in the last two decades on NG engines, which can be successfully exploited in this context. The objective of this paper is twofold. In the first part, a feasibility study has been carried out with reference to a typical 2000cc SI engine by means of 1D simulations. This study was aimed at characterizing the performance on the full load curve with respect to a baseline PFI engine fueled by NG. In this phase, the turbocharging/supercharging device has not been included in the model in order to quantify the attainable benefits in the absence of any limitation coming from the turbocharger. In the second part of this paper, the conversion of a prototype 1400cc direct injection NG engine, running with stoichiometric mixture, to run on a lean hydrogen combustion mode has been investigated via 1D simulations. Low or even zero carbon dioxide emissions will be an essential requirement for energy supplies in the near future. Besides transport and electricity generation, industry is another large carbon emitter. Hydrogen produced by renewable energy provides a flexible way of utilizing that energy. Hydrogen, as an energy carrier, could be stored in a large capacity compared to electricity. In Sweden, hydrogen will be used to replace coal for steel production. This paper discusses how the need for electricity to produce hydrogen will affect the electricity supply and power flow in the Swedish power grid, and whether it will result in increased emissions in other regions. Data of the Swedish system will be used to study the feasibility of implementing the hydrogen system from the power system viewpoint, and discuss the electricity price and emission issues caused by the hydrogen production in different scenarios. This paper concludes that the Swedish power grid is feasible for accommodating the additional electricity capacity requirement of producing green hydrogen for the steel industry. In pursuit of energy transition objectives, Algeria is increasingly focusing on the production and utilization of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen. While hydrogen has predominantly been used in the chemical and refining industries, it holds promise for decarbonizing specific industrial sectors, enabling electricity storage, and powering the transport sector. However, several barriers must be overcome before hydrogen technologies can be widely deployed. Numerous countries, with Japan at the forefront, are heavily investing in this burgeoning market, anticipating the creation of thousands of new jobs. Hydrogen offers Algeria significant potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and substantial economic benefits. In response, the Algerian government has prioritized energy transition to new and renewable sources as part of its economic recovery plan, aiming for "green" growth through innovative and digital energy technologies. This paper's primary objective is to provide a techno-economic foundation for guiding public policy development, identifying promising opportunities for green hydrogen within Algeria's energy transition context, and outlining sustainable pathways for pilot projects that promote hydrogen adoption within the Algerian society. Additionally, this paper will explore the latest advancements in hydrogen research, technology, and applications relevant to the Algeria's energy transition. The Algerian energy minister, has reaffirmed his desire to "invest in hydrogen", an energy source presented as one of the solutions to the climate crisis. To advance carbon neutrality policies, many countries are increasingly integrating Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) into their energy mix. However, for harnessing natural energy in power generation, RESs present challenges in output control, potentially leading to power imbalances. Such imbalances, when coupled with an excessive reliance on unpredictable RES, may necessitate the curtailment of grid-integrated renewable generation, halting production despite available capacity. This paper proposes strategies to mitigate the economic and operational efficiency impacts of increased RESs on the power grid. It focuses on the optimal operation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) and Power to Gas (P2G) technology, which flexibly converts surplus electricity into hydrogen. By employing Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) for optimization and Stochastic Programming (SP) for the management of the uncertainty of renewable energy output, this paper evaluates the anticipated benefits of BESS and P2G applications. In this paper, an economic life cycle assessment of hydrogen-fueled gas turbine power plant is developed, where hydrogen is produced via electrolysis with electricity generated from renewable resources (green hydrogen). By this way, the continuous green electricity without fluctuation can be generated. With a great potential in solar irradiation, Iran can be a major country for producing green hydrogen. For this purpose, first, we simulate a 100 MW solar PV plant in Fars province and calculate annual electricity generation. Considering capital cost (Capex) and operations and maintenance costs (Opex) of plants including PV, electrolyzer, hydrogen storage and distribution facilities, and gas turbine, we estimate levelized cost of electricity from green H2-fueled gas turbine power plant. Because hydrogen technology has not matured yet, the analysis for both 2021 and 2040 will be conducted. Due to lower marginal production costs, the increase in renewable energy sources decreases electricity wholesale prices. In this paper, we also estimate long-term merit order effect (MOE) of electricity generated by green hydrogen on electricity wholesale price. The results show that in renewable/hydrogen-based forecast for electricity mix of 2040, electricity wholesale price is estimated around 6.38 c$/kWh, nearly 38% less than present wholesale price. Ecofuels and their feedstock come in three main product classes: electrofuels (e-Fuels), biofuels, and non-biowaste-derived fuels. Ecofuels originate from non-fossil sources, derived from circular raw materials such as non-food organic waste, renewable hydrogen, and captured CO2 through a rapid process of carbon fixation. Proposed regulation drafts under discussion indicate that new fuels would need to reach a substantial degree of climate neutrality. The manufacture of all ecofuels, however, requires energy input to accomplish the conversion of the initial feedstock; their climate neutrality claims stem from the use of renewable electric energy and/or biomasses in the production process, but fossil fuels are still the main primary sources of global (and the EU's) electric power, and most biofuels consumed in the EU transport mix are still crop-based, with potential conflicts with food and land use. Furthermore, entirely neglecting GHG emissions from renewable energy generation is scientifically debatable, as the impact of the energy (and the related GHG emissions) embedded in the materials used to build renewable energy facilities is small, but not nil. Green hydrogen is central to the global energy transition. This paper introduces a renewable hydrogen production system model that optimizes hydrogen production on a worldwide 50 km × 50 km grid, considering country-specific investment risks. Besides the renewable energy's impact on the hydrogen production system (HPS) design, we analyze the effect of country-specific interest rates on the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) production. Over one-third (40.0%) of all cells have an installed solar PV capacity share between 50% and 70%, 76.4% have a hybrid (onshore wind and solar PV) configuration. Hydrogen storage is deployed rather than battery storage to balance hydrogen production via electrolysis and hydrogen demand. Hybrid HPSs can significantly reduce the LCOH production compared to non-hybrid designs, whereas country-specific interest rates can lead to significant increases, diminishing the relative competitiveness of countries with abundant renewable energy resources compared to countries with fewer resources but fewer investment risks. This article presents the world energy situation, the importance of energy transition, and it further designates hydrogen as a potential replacement for natural gas. Moreover, the paper specifies that the energy transition will be carried out gradually, sustained by conventional resources. Hydrogen can be mixed with natural gasses in current networks, but additional risks must be considered. These risks prove to be minimal in the distribution sector if the hydrogen fraction is kept within acceptable limits, and if optimal operation and safety measures are enforced. The behavior of the hydrogen-natural gas mixture, also called HENG, is studied based on distinguishing the physical and chemical properties of hydrogen and natural gas. In order to analyze the true behavior of the mixture in a distribution network, a numerical simulation was undertaken, whose analysis shows that there is a tight connection between the concentration of hydrogen in the system, consumption, and linepack, and the operational limits of the network must be established based on these data. Knowing the behavior, strategies and regulations can be drafted in order to safely exploit natural gas-hydrogen distribution networks. However, every distribution network has its own particularities, which is why additional studies both at theoretical as well as practical level, performed on real distribution networks, are needed. The development of large energy systems based on renewable energy sources is accompanied by an increase in the input capacities of large grid storages. Taking into account the vector for decarbonization and maneuverability, the use of hydrogen as a fuel in the cycle of a diabatic compressed air energy storage (CAES) is a promising scientific and technical direction. This paper analyzes the key performance indicators of a compressed air energy storage in the presence and absence of thermal energy recovery within the cycle. In addition, an assessment was made of the prospects for the use of a methane-hydrogen mixture in gas turbines. At the end of the paper, a calculation of the process of plasma pyrolysis of methane is given as one of the possible methods for the production of hydrogen for use in energy purposes. To achieve a more ecologically friendly energy transition by the year 2050 under the European "green" accord, hydrogen has recently gained significant scientific interest due to its efficiency as an energy carrier. This paper focuses on large-scale hydrogen production systems based on marine renewable-energy-based wind turbines and tidal turbines. The paper reviews the different technologies of hydrogen production using water electrolyzers, energy storage unit base hydrogen vectors, and fuel cells (FC). The focus is on large-scale hydrogen production systems using marine renewable energies. This study compares electrolyzers, energy storage units, and FC technologies, with the main factors considered being cost, sustainability, and efficiency. Furthermore, a review of aging models of electrolyzers and FCs based on electrical circuit models is drawn from the literature and presented, including characterization methods of the model components and the parameters extraction methods, using a dynamic current profile. In addition, industrial projects for producing hydrogen from renewable energies that have already been completed or are now in progress are examined. The paper is concluded through a summary of recent hydrogen production and energy storage advances, as well as some applications. Perspectives on enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of hydrogen production systems are also proposed and discussed. This paper provides a review of behavioral aging models of electrolyzers and FCs when integrated into hydrogen production systems, as this is crucial for their successful deployment in an ever-changing energy context. We also review the EU's potential for renewable energy analysis. Renewable energy is a promising substitute for fossil fuels when corelated with P2G technology. To optimise P2G efficiency, there is a need to increase hydrogen fraction in the fuel stream. Simultaneously gas microturbines are widely applied in many industry sectors. These devices are often equipped with diffusion combustors. This situation was investigated in this paper. The P2G and gas microturbines may be integrated together in the future leading to the application of hydrogen-enriched fuel. Hydrogen-enriched fuel causes increase in combustion temperature and velocity. In a nonadapted combustor, these phenomena could result in an increase of NOx emissions and risk of material overheating and failure. In order to adapt the combustors for hydrogen-enriched fuel, the concept of autonomous internal flue gases recirculation (IFGR) system was applied to this issue. In this paper, the IFGR system applied to gas microturbine was studied in terms of hydrogen-enriched fuel application. The obtained exhaust gases recirculation ratios were too low to affect the combustion process as it was expected. The observed combustion modifications in the combustor were hardly linked to the air flow modification in the liner, due to IFGR system implementation. To reach climate neutrality by 2050, a goal that the European Union set itself, it is necessary to change and modify the whole EU's energy system through deep decarbonization and reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions. The study presents a current insight into the global energy-transition pathway based on the hydrogen energy industry chain. The paper provides a critical analysis of the role of clean hydrogen based on renewable energy sources (green hydrogen) and fossil-fuels-based hydrogen (blue hydrogen) in the development of a new hydrogen-based economy and the reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions. The actual status, costs, future directions, and recommendations for low-carbon hydrogen development and commercial deployment are addressed. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the selected properties of HCNG fuel calculations and a literature review of the other fuels that allow the storage of ecologically produced hydrogen. Hydrogen has the most significant CO2 reduction potential of all known fuels. However, its transmission in pure form is still problematic, and its use as a component of fuels modified by it has now become an issue of interest for researchers. Many types of hydrogen-enriched fuels have been invented. However, this article will describe the reasons why HCNG may be the hydrogen-enriched fuel of the future and why internal combustion (IC) piston engines working on two types of fuel could be the future method of using it. CO2 emissions are currently a serious problem in protecting the Earth's natural climate. However, secondarily, power grid stabilization with a large share of electricity production from renewable energy sources must be stabilized with very flexible sources—as flexible as multi-fuel IC engines. Their use is becoming an essential element of the electricity power systems of Western countries, and there is a chance to use fuels with zero or close to zero CO2 emissions, like e-fuels and HCNG. Dual-fuel engines have become an effective way of using these types of fuels efficiently; therefore, in this article, the parameters of hydrogen-enriched fuel selected in terms of relevance to the use of IC engines are considered. Inaccuracies found in the literature analysis are discussed, and the essential properties of HCNG and its advantages over other hydrogen-rich fuels are summarized in terms of its use in dual-fuel (DF) IC engines. Increasing greenhouse gas emissions and the increase in renewable energy sources in electricity generation have led to an increasing interest in hydrogen in recent years. As an energy storage solution for renewable energy, hydrogen can contribute to decarbonizing industries and transportation sectors as well as balancing energy systems. In this paper, the primary objective is to examine different methods for producing hydrogen depending on the primary energy source. In addition, it evaluates the economic and environmental performance of three types of hydrogen, known as hydrogen colors, and the significant obstacles to widespread fuel cell adoption. The key finding is that hydrogen's environmental benefits depend heavily on how hydrogen is produced and what fuel is used to produce it. Green hydrogen can only be produced using wind, solar photovoltaic (PV), and hydroelectric power. The emissions from other sources, such as blue hydrogen that uses carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) or electrolysis using electricity from the grid, are significantly higher than those from grey hydrogen. Furthermore, establishing an international hydrogen market will reduce costs and allow hydrogen to be produced in optimal locations. Lastly, a key unresolved question is whether hydrogen, whatever its color, is economically competitive in any sector of the energy system, despite all external costs associated with it. A policy framework that supports technological advancements, cost reductions, and future priorities will determine hydrogen's success in the future. Nowadays, renewable energy sources are integral to programs for the development of electric power systems. It is established that modern renewable generation units and energy storage systems utilize power electronic-based interfaces, such as voltage source converters, to convert power. On the one hand, the utilization of a voltage source converter provides certain advantages, such as the absence of a direct link to the network, the ability to operate on all quadrants of the PQ diagram, and the possibility of connecting renewable generation units to a weak network. On the other hand, the widespread use of renewable generation units utilizing voltage source converters reduces the overall inertia of the electric power system. However, excessive use of power electronic converters in the network leads to a significant increase in harmonic pollution, thereby introducing fresh challenges to ensuring safe and stable operation of the electric power system. To ensure the dependable operation of an electric power system with renewable energy sources units and energy storage systems based on the voltage source converter, it is essential to update the control system of the voltage source converter to meet the requirements for traditional generation as part of the electric power system. Hydrogen is expected to be a game changer in the fight against climate change, being able to support the clean energy transition through a variety of roles: decarbonizing different hard-to-abate industrial sectors (such as steel, cement production) and transport (in long haul vehicles, maritime transport, and aviation), direct use as a fuel, chemical feedstock or in the form of synthetic fuels, and providing the ability to integrate with hybrid energy systems and renewables, enhancing energy storage and tapping the full potential of renewable energy sources. As a consequence, a substantial expansion in hydrogen production, due to rise in the demand, is expected by 2050, with all the generation coming from zero-carbon processes (electrolysis/thermochemical cycles using clean electricity and heat) or from a low-carbon production process using steam methane reforming with carbon capture and storage. Nuclear energy can be capitalized on both electricity and heat to provide a clean and reliable source of hydrogen through various processes. There are currently various demonstration projects undergoing in several countries to showcase the use of nuclear energy to produce clean hydrogen, considering both the current reactor fleet and advanced reactors. This paper provides an overview of these projects, giving an insight on the potential use of nuclear energy for hydrogen production and the current status of existing projects. Alkaline water electrolysis has become the most promising solution for hydrogen production considering certain factors such as cost, lifetime and maturity of technology. By developing the large-scale hydrogen production by alkaline water electrolysis as the energy buffering, the consuming pressure of the power system caused by the growing penetration of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy can be relieved effectively. However, when the alkaline water electrolysis is integrated with renewable energy sources, the unclear underlying mechanism and interaction characteristics limit large-scale application for hydrogen production. The depletion of reliable energy sources and the environmental and climatic repercussions of polluting energy sources have become global challenges. Hence, many countries have adopted various renewable energy sources including hydrogen. Hydrogen is a future energy carrier in the global energy system and has the potential to produce zero carbon emissions. For the non-fossil energy sources, hydrogen and electricity are considered the dominant energy carriers for providing end-user services, because they can satisfy most of the consumer requirements. Hence, the development of both hydrogen production and storage is necessary to meet the standards of a "hydrogen economy". The physical and chemical absorption of hydrogen in solid storage materials is a promising hydrogen storage method because of the high storage and transportation performance. In this paper, physical hydrogen storage materials such as hollow spheres, carbon-based materials, zeolites, and metal–organic frameworks are reviewed. We summarize and discuss the properties, hydrogen storage densities at different temperatures and pressures, and the fabrication and modification methods of these materials. In order to effectively combat the effects of global warming, all sectors must actively reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a sustainable and substantial manner. Sector coupling has emerged as a critical technology that can integrate energy systems and address the temporal imbalances created by intermittent renewable energy sources. Despite its potential, current sector coupling capabilities remain underutilized, and energy modeling approaches face challenges in understanding the intricacies of sector coupling and in selecting appropriate modeling tools. This paper presents a comprehensive review of sector coupling technologies and their role in the energy transition, with a specific focus on the integration of electricity, heat/cooling, and transportation, as well as the importance of hydrogen in sector coupling. Additionally, we conducted an analysis of 27 sector coupling models based on renewable energy sources, with the goal of aiding deciders in identifying the most appropriate model for their specific modeling needs. Finally, the paper highlights the importance of sector coupling in achieving climate protection goals, while emphasizing the need for technological openness and market-driven conditions to ensure economically efficient implementation. Rapid industrialization is consuming too much energy, and non-renewable energy resources are currently supplying the world's majority of energy requirements. As a result, the global energy mix is being pushed towards renewable and sustainable energy sources by the world's future energy plan and climate change. Currently, the production of hydrogen from fossil fuels is dominant in the world and its utilization is increasing daily. This paper aims at the development and validation of a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model for simulations of the refuelling process through the entire equipment of the hydrogen refuelling station (HRS). The absence of such models hinders the design of inherently safer refuelling protocols for an arbitrary combination of HRS equipment, hydrogen storage parameters, and environmental conditions. The CFD model is validated against the complete process of refuelling lasting 195s in Test No.1 performed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The test equipment includes high-pressure tanks of HRS, pressure control valve (PCV), valves, pipes, breakaway, hose, and nozzle all the way up to three onboard tanks. The model accurately reproduced hydrogen temperature and pressure through the entire line of HRS equipment. Designing self-sufficient renewable energy systems is becoming a key issue in the energy sector due to modern energy goals. Due to the variability of renewable energy sources, very often it is necessary to adopt hybrid configurations of renewable energy systems and advanced energy storage to achieve self-sufficiency. However, the adoption of complex and novel systems, including technologies as photovoltaic, wind turbines, biomass gasifiers, hydrogen energy storage, must to be founded on a comprehensive analysis of the system operation under different conditions and its energy and economic performance in the investigated case study. Therefore, the aim of the present paper is carry out a comprehensive feasibility analysis of a novel hybrid renewable energy system achieving a high self-sufficiency level. The system integrates a wind turbine and photovoltaic panels to match the energy load of a tourist resort in Agkistro, Greece. Energy exceeding the load is directed to the energy storage system based on the battery and hydrogen tank. As backup energy source, a wood gasifier is used. The investigation is performed by means of a numerical model developed in TRNSYS software allowing one to simulate dynamically the system and to assess its energy and economic performance. The goal achieved during the simulation of the system was to ensure at least 97% of energy demand from renewable sources. Moreover, a parametric analysis of the storage system is presented. It is found that payback period of the installation varies in the range between 11 and 15 years, for systems configurations allowing to satisfy 90–98% of the users energy yearly demand from renewables. The transition to a low-carbon energy system can be depicted as a "great reconfiguration" from a socio-technical perspective that carries the risk of impact shifts. Electrification with the objective of achieving rapidly deep decarbonisation must be accompanied by effective efficiency and flexibility measures. Hydrogen can be a preferred option in the decarbonisation process where electrification of end-uses is difficult or impractical as well as for long-term storage in energy infrastructure characterised by a large penetration of renewable energy sources. Notwithstanding the current uncertainties regarding costs, environmental impact and the inherent difficulties of increasing rapidly supply capacity, hydrogen can represent a solution to be used in multi-energy systems with combined heat and power (CHP), in particular in urban energy districts. In fact, while achieving carbon savings with natural gas fuelled CHP is not possible when low grid carbon intensity factors are present, it may still be possible to use it to provide flexibility services and to reduce emissions further with switch from natural gas to hydrogen. In the future, the development of a zero-carbon economy will require large-scale hydrogen storage. This article addresses hydrogen storage capacities, a critical issue for large-scale hydrogen storage in geological structures. The aim of this paper is to present a methodology to evaluate the potential for hydrogen storage in depleted natural gas reservoirs and estimate the capacity and energy of stored hydrogen. The estimates took into account the recoverable reserves of the reservoirs, hydrogen parameters under reservoir conditions, and reservoir parameters of selected natural gas reservoirs. The theoretical and practical storage capacities were assessed in the depleted natural gas fields of N and NW Poland. Estimates based on the proposed methodology indicate that the average hydrogen storage potential for the studied natural gas fields ranges from 0.01 to 42.4 TWh of the hydrogen energy equivalent. Four groups of reservoirs were distinguished, which differed in recovery factor and technical hydrogen storage capacity. In the maritime transportation, e-fuels represent a valid alternative to fossil energy sources, in order to accomplish the European Union goals in terms of climate neutrality. Among the e-fuels, the ammonia-hydrogen mixtures can play a leading role, as the combination of the two allows to exploit the advantages of each one, simultaneously compensating their gaps. The main goal of the present publication is the proposal of a robust numerical framework based on 0D, 1D and 3D tools for CFD analyses of internal combustion engines fueled with ammonia-hydrogen mixtures. The 1D engine model provides boundary conditions for the multi-dimensional investigations and estimates the overall engine performance. 3D in-cylinder detailed analyses are proficiently used to predict combustion efficiency (via the well-established G -equation model supported by laminar flame speed correlations for both ammonia and hydrogen) and emissions (with a detailed chemistry based approach). Heat transfer and knock tendency are evaluated as well, by in-house developed models. As for the 0D/1D chemical kinetics calculations, firstly they support 3D analyses (for example via the generation of ignition delay time tables). Moreover, they allow insights on aspects such as NO x formation, to individuate mixture qualities able to strongly reduce the emissions. The present paper offers also indications for designers on the effectiveness of NH 3 –H 2 as valid substitutes of traditional fuels in marine applications. In fact, the proposed framework is preliminary tested to convert an existing marine Diesel engine to ammonia-hydrogen mixtures. Different proportions (among the two fuels) are investigated, included pure ammonia and pure hydrogen and the NH 3 –H 2 80mol%-20mol% mixture is selected as the best compromise. Thanks to both the anti-knock quality of the ammonia and the (limited) addition of hydrogen as combustion enhancer, the engine supplied with NH 3 –H 2 mixtures is able to operate free of knock and keep the same performance as the original one. Simultaneously (neglecting the presence of lubricant oil in the combustion chamber) unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are eliminated. In this paper, a two-layer hierarchical control strategy for an isolated DC microgrid with a hybrid energy storage system is considered. The DC microgrid studied is composed of a short-term battery energy storage system, long-term hydrogen-based energy storage system and renewable energy resources. The proposed control strategy, combines concepts of Interconnection and Damping Assignment Passivity-Based Control (IDA-PBC) as a primary level and Model Predictive Control (MPC) as a supervisory level. The IDA-PBC layer guarantees a correct power balance and ensures global stability according to Lyapunov theory, considering the non-linear behavior of the physical system. On the other hand, the MPC layer calculates the reference signals for the primary level, ensuring null stationary error in the desired variables. As known, it is important to keep the electrolyzer, the fuel cell and the batteries in a safe operating mode to increase their useful life and guarantee the quality of the hydrogen produced. In this sense, the benefits of MPC are exploited by considering system constraints in the controller design. The main objective of the two-layer control strategy is to ensure the supply of electrical energy to the loads and quality in the electrical variables of the network. Hydrogen, as a carbon-free energy carrier, has emerged as a crucial component in the decarbonization of the energy system, serving as both an energy storage option and fuel for dispatchable power generation to mitigate the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. However, the unique physical and combustion characteristics of hydrogen, which differ from conventional gaseous fuels such as biogas and natural gas, present new challenges that must be addressed. Renewable energy sources were first utilized around 200 BCE, approximately 2000 years ago. The initial form of renewable energy was the water mill, which operated on friction, harnessing hydro-energy through the rotation of its wheel, converting it into mechanical energy. The second such renewable energy source was the windmill, which transformed wind energy into mechanical energy. From the recent past to the present, an increasing number of methods for creating renewable energy sources have emerged, such as nuclear energy, which converts chemical energy into electrical energy, hydroelectric power plants that convert hydro-energy into electrical energy, geothermal energy that harnesses heat from the earth to produce electricity, and even photovoltaic panels, descendants of solar panels, capable of accumulating energy from any light source, unlike traditional solar panels that only captured energy from sunlight. This paper aims to provide a holistic analysis of the role of hydrogen for achieving greenhouse gas neutrality in Germany. For that purpose, we apply an integrated energy system model which includes all demand sectors of the German energy system and optimizes the transformation pathway from today's energy system to a future cost-optimal energy system. We show that 412 TWh of hydrogen are needed in the year 2045, mostly in the industry and transport sector. Particularly, the use of about 267 TWh of hydrogen in industry is essential as there are no cost-effective alternatives for the required emission reduction in the chemical industry or in steel production. Furthermore, we illustrate that the German hydrogen supply in the year 2045 requires both an expansion of domestic electrolyzer capacity to 71 GW H2 and hydrogen imports from other European countries and Northern Africa of about 196 TWh. Moreover, flexible operation of electrolyzers is cost-optimal and crucial for balancing the intermittent nature of volatile renewable energy sources. Optimal energy management of microgrids enables efficient integration of renewable energies by considering all system flexibilities. For systems with significant seasonal imbalance between energy production and demand, it may be necessary to integrate seasonal storage in order to achieve fully decarbonized operation. This paper develops a novel model predictive control strategy for a renewable microgrid with seasonal hydrogen storage. The strategy relies on data-based prediction of the energy production and consumption of an industrial power plant and finds optimized energy flows using a digital twin optimizer. To enable seasonal operation, incentives for long-term energy shifts are provided by assigning a cost value to the storage charge and adding it to the optimization target function. A hybrid control scheme based on rule-based heuristics compensates for imperfect predictions. The cross-regional renewable hydrogen supply is significant for China to resolve the uneven distribution of renewable energy and decarbonize the transportation sector. Yet the economic comparison of various hydrogen supply routes remains obscure. This paper conducts a techno-economic analysis on six hydrogen supply routes for hydrogen refueling stations, including gas-hydrogen tube-trailer, gas-hydrogen pipeline, liquid-hydrogen truck, natural gas pipeline, MeOH truck, and NH 3 truck. Furthermore, the impacts of three critical factors are examined, including electrolyzer selection, transportation distance, and electricity price. The results indicate that, with a transport distance of 2000 km, the natural gas pipeline route offers the lowest cost, while the gas-hydrogen tube-trailer route is not economically feasible. The gas-hydrogen pipeline route shows outstanding cost competitiveness between 200 and 2000 km, while it is greatly influenced by the utilization rate. The liquid-hydrogen truck route demonstrates great potential with the electricity price decreasing. Argentina has a wide availability of renewable resources, which provides important advantages for the hydrogen vector incorporation. The province of Córdoba is an excellent model case for the study of the rapid incorporation of hydrogen as fuel, to replace 20% V/V of natural gas consumed in vehicular use. This does not involve major changes in infrastructure or modifications to the vehicles. This paper computes and analyzes the levelized cost of hydrogen with the emissions associated for each part of the complete hydrogen supply chain. Two different production sources were used: renewable energies sources and the Argentine electrical grid; and two production pathways: in situ and centralized production. Green hydrogen is gaining popularity as a clean fuel, and India is one of the countries that is exploring its potential. The paper analyzes the factors contributing to the adoption of green hydrogen in India. Additionally, with the accessibility of renewable energy resources, the growing demand for hydrogen in various industrial applications, and the development of supportive infrastructure and policies are also contributing to the expansion of the green hydrogen sector. In light of resource depletion, energy scarcity, and toxic waste management, gasification is regarded as a viable waste-to-energy conversion method. Moreover, the Gasifier-Engine-Genest combo provides a suitable alternative for distributed electric power, waste conversion, and alleviating electricity scarcity. Despite an abundance of research report, it is not usually acknowledged as a viable alternative to traditional energy sources. Thus, to promote Gasification, efficient technology is required to maximize the yield of syngas with clean and improved calorific value. Furthermore, there is a void in the prior study that summarises the various types of biomasses and their pre-treatment, as well as the progression of conventional gasification to advanced gasification for the improvement of syngas quality and respective critical applications. Moreover, this is necessary in order to organise the conditions and biomass for gasification, which are many and frequently scattered in the literature. Hence, this study summarises the detailed review of recent novel concepts development over conventional techniques of biomass gasification. Recent reports on feed material properties of diverse biomass, as well as pre-treatment employing biomass torrefaction for gasification, are presented in this paper in order to evaluate their potential. In addition, a literature review of the various categories of gasification, the gasification processes, and the impact of technology on the quality of syngas, power generation and distribution were reported. This paper presents the VCHP platform as a solution to address PV curtailment and line congestion in scenarios of increasing renewable energy penetration. Solar PV generation profiles and load profiles were generated for three scenarios (2025, 2030, and 2035) using data provided by KPX. Modifications were made to the IEEE 30 Bus model to accurately reflect the Korean power system, including the introduction of PCA and LCA at relevant buses. Line congestion was evaluated using metrics such as TUR, STUR, and TLR. The research findings indicate that integrating the VCHP platform in all scenarios effectively alleviates line congestion, as shown by the TUR remaining below 1. Importantly, the reduction in line losses exceeds the decrease in power flow, demonstrating the effectiveness of VCHP in reducing power losses. The results suggest that as renewable energy sources increase, line congestion issues may arise in the existing power system. However, integrating the proposed VCHP platform is a valuable solution for effectively utilizing surplus PV energy and improving the stability of the power grid. In recent years, much literature has described the energy management of renewable energy systems with hydrogen in a comprehensive way. However, most of them are proposed and discussed from an academic point of view. There are likewise several different approaches and ideas in the patents that address the energy management of hydrogen renewable energy systems. Moreover, most patents are oriented toward industrial applications and still need to be reviewed and analyzed. To fill this gap, this paper reviews relevant US patents to find potential and industrial hydrogen applications and energy management strategies in renewable energy systems. Hydrogen energy has an advantage over conventional fossil energy because of its clean and low-carbon features, while its stability gives it an advantage over renewable energy sources such as hydropower, photovoltaic (PV) power, and wind power. Using hydrogen as a fuel can achieve zero carbon emissions or even net zero emissions at the end of energy conversion. Moreover, with hydrogen as the carrier, an energy system of multi-energy complementarity will be established by coupling multiple energy systems such as power grids, gas grids and heat networks, which can realize the comprehensive utilization of renewable energy sources in an efficient, stable, and flexible manner. Based on the "dual carbon" goals, this paper targets sectors with high carbon emissions represented by electric power, steel and transportation, analyzes the feasible path of using hydrogen energy to promote deep carbon reduction, and points out the obstacles faced by hydrogen energy development in various sectors. On account of the current development and expected prospects, this paper proposes that the current focus of hydrogen energy industry is to coordinate the development of industrial sectors and regions, build a pattern that can facilitate the industry's systematic and concerted development, address key technical challenges (such as green hydrogen production or hydrogen storage and transportation via pipeline), improve industrial standards, and promote the industry's development in a balanced, coordinated and orderly way. The freight sector is expected to keep, or even increase, its fundamental role for the major modern economies, and therefore actions to limit the growing pressure on the environment are urgent. The use of electricity is a major option for the decarbonization of transports; in the heavy-duty segment, it can be implemented in different ways: besides full electric-battery powertrains, electricity can be used to supply catenary roads, or can be chemically stored in liquid or gaseous fuels (e-fuels). While the current EU legislation adopts a tailpipe Tank-To-Wheels approach, which results in zero emissions for all direct uses of electricity, a Well-To-Wheels (WTW) method would allow accounting for the potential benefits of using sustainable fuels such as e-fuels. In this article, we have performed a WTW-based comparison and modelling of the options for using electricity to supply heavy-duty vehicles: e-fuels, eLNG, eDiesel, and liquid Hydrogen. Results showed that the direct use of electricity can provide high Greenhouse Gas (GHG) savings, and also in the case of the e-fuels when low-carbon-intensity electricity is used for their production. While most studies exclusively focus on absolute GHG savings potential, considerations of the need for new infrastructures, and the technological maturity of some options, are fundamental to compare the different technologies. In this paper, an assessment of such technological and non-technological barriers has been conducted, in order to compare alternative pathways for the heavy-duty sector. Among the available options, the flexibility of using drop-in, energy-dense liquid fuels represents a clear and substantial immediate advantage for decarbonization. Additionally, the novel approach adopted in this paper allows us to quantify the potential benefits of using e-fuels as chemical storage able to accumulate electricity from the production peaks of variable renewable energies, which would otherwise be wasted due to grid limitations. World's energy demand is majorly met by fossil fuels. An increase in the demand for energy and the depletion of fossil fuels leads to look for the alternate source of energy. Hydrogen is one of the most viable alternate sources of alternate energy. This paper presents the performance study of a Compression Ignition engine using a fuel combination of diesel and hydrogen-diesel. The performance parameters have been analyzed with two input factors, load and Compression Ratio and three output responses, Brake Thermal efficiency (BTE), Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) and Volumetric efficiency. The experimental results indicate the improvement in BTE, reduction in BSFC and volumetric efficiency. The BTE was improved by 6.38%, BSFC was reduced by 4.87% and Volumetric efficiency got reduced by 1.89% when hydrogen-diesel fuel is used in place of neat diesel. The experiments have been designed with the help of Design Expert® 13.0.5 using Response Surface Method. The experiments are conducted using Optimal (Custom) design. Mathematical relations are developed between the process parameters and the input factors using regression analysis. The optimal solution has been obtained using the desirability approach. The confirmation experiments have been performed on the optimal solution to verify with the experiment results. Concerns about energy security, energy prices and climate change led scientific research towards sustainable solutions to fossil fuel as renewable energy sources coupled to hydrogen as energy vector and carbon capture and conversion technologies. Among the technologies investigated in the last decades, biomass gasification acquired great interest owing to the possibility to obtain low cost and CO 2 negative emission hydrogen production from a large variety of everywhere available organic wastes. Upstream and downstream treatment were then studied in order to maximize hydrogen yield, reduce the content of organic and inorganic contaminants under the admissible levels for the technologies which are coupled with, capture, and convert carbon dioxide. However, studies which analyse a whole process made of all those technologies is still missing. In order to fill this lack, the present paper investigated the coexistence of Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC), Sorption Enhance Gasification (SEG), Hot Gas Cleaning (HGC), and CO 2 conversion by Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma reactor for H 2 production from biomass waste by means of Aspen Plus software. The proposed model aimed to identify and optimise the performance of the plant by varying operating parameters (such as temperature, CaO/biomass ratio, separation efficiency, etc.). The carbon footprint of the global plant is 2.3 kg CO 2 /kg H 2 , lower than the latest limit value imposed by the European Commission to consider hydrogen as "clean", that was set to 3 kg CO 2 /kg H 2. Hydrogen has the potential to be considered almost the cleanest fuel of the future and a key contributor toward a low-carbon economy. This latter can be achieved through the production of green hydrogen by electrolysis using renewable energy sources. This work investigates the production of green hydrogen using solar PV-electrolysis configuration. Three different photovoltaic technologies including monocrystalline (m-Si), polycrystalline (p-Si) and amorphous (a-Si) have been used in this study. The aim of this paper is to identify the most suitable PV system for hydrogen production in mountain temperate climate conditions. Therefore, a performance assessment of the aforementioned PV systems has been conducted using data collected for an operation period of 6 years. In addition, the rate of degradation of each technology has been determined, and its effects on hydrogen generation and cost have been examined. The obtained results have shown that p-Si technology has the lowest degradation rate of (0.28%), followed by m-Si (0.41%), and a-Si (0.75%). In addition, key metrics including the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) as well as the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) have been calculated. The findings indicate that the lowest LCOE and LCOH are achieved by p-Si (0.021 $/kWh, 3.59 $/kg), followed by a-Si technology (0.027 $/kWh, 4 $/kg), and m-Si (0.032 $/kWh, 4.34 $/kg). Hydrogen supplying to industrial users is currently the major hydrogen business worldwide and the demand for hydrogen is almost entirely supplied from fossil fuels. In the last years a widespread interest on hydrogen has grown as energy vector for the decarbonization of multiple sectors, including industry, transport and buildings. Nevertheless, the impact of natural gas and other fossil fuels substitution with hydrogen is highly affected by the mix of different technologies and energy sources applied for hydrogen generation. The paper aims to investigate current CO 2 emissions related with hydrogen generation in Australia and Italy by means of PEM and alkaline technologies; and to evaluate the potential impact considering cell characteristics variation and 3 scenarios based on energy mix. A sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the critical parameters. Based on experimental data, the energy consumption for hydrogen production using PEM technology is more sensitive to cell voltage compared to current density, which indicates the importance of cell manufacturing and electrolyte resistance. In addition, by performing sensitivity analysis regarding energy sources scenarios it is found that carbon dioxide emission in Australia is more sensitive to renewable energy sources rather than Italy. Networked microgrids that integrate the hydrogen fueling stations (HFSs) with the on-site renewable energy sources (RES), power-to-hydrogen (P2H) facilities, and hydrogen storage could help decarbonize the energy and transportation sectors. In this paper, to support the hydrogen-based networked microgrids planning subject to multiple uncertainties (e.g., RES generation, electric loads, and the refueling demands of hydrogen vehicles), we propose a two-stage stochastic formulation with mixed integer conic program (MICP) recourse decisions. Our formulation involves the holistic investment and operation modeling to optimally site and configure the microgrids with HFSs. The MICP problems appearing in the second-stage capture the nonlinear power flow of networked microgrids system with binary decisions on storage charging/discharging status and energy transactions (including the trading of electricity, hydrogen, and carbon credits to recover the capital expenditures). To handle the computational challenges associated with the stochastic program with MICP recourse, an augmented Benders decomposition algorithm (ABD) is developed. Numerical studies on 33- and 47-bus exemplary networks demonstrate the economics viability of electricity-hydrogen coordination on microgrids level, as well as the benefits of stochastic modeling. Also, our augmented algorithm significantly outperforms existing methods, e.g., the progressive hedging algorithm (PHA) and the direct use of a professional MIP solver, which has largely improved the solution quality and reduced the computation time by orders of magnitude. Note to Practitioners—This paper proposes an optimal planning model for electricity-hydrogen microgrids with the renewable hydrogen production, storage, and refueling infrastructures. Our planning model is extended under a two-stage stochastic framework to address the multi-energy-sector uncertainties, e.g., RES generation, electric loads, and the refueling demands of hydrogen vehicles. The first-stage problem is to optimize the siting and sizing plan of microgrids. Then, in the second-stage problem, the coordinated scheduling of electricity and hydrogen supply systems is modeled as second-order conic programs (SOCPs) to accurately capture the power flow representation under stochastic scenarios. Also, the logical constraints with binary variables are introduced to describe the energy transactions and storage operations, which results in an MICP recourse structure. Note that the stochastic MICP formulation could be very challenging to compute even with a moderate number of scenarios. One challenge certainly comes from integer variables that cause the problem nonconvex. Another challenge follows from the fact that the strong duality of SOCPs might not hold in general. To mitigate those two challenges, we prove that the continuous relaxation of our recourse problem has strong duality, and make use of that continuous relaxation and other enhancements to design an augmented decomposition algorithm. As revealed by our numerical tests, the proposed decomposition method outperforms PHA in both the solution quality and computational efficiency. Comparing to the PHA, our ABD method often achieves tighter bounds with trivial optimality gaps. Also, it could reduce the computation time by orders of magnitude.
