The article presents a study which compared the prevalence of commonly screened infections in internationally adopted children as a distinct population seen at an international adoption clinic (IAC) by region of adoption. Topics discussed include demographics and testing results by region, overall rate of positive tuberculosis screening, and the decline in the number of children adopted from other countries since the global pandemic.

We investigated the association between adopted Chinese girls’ nighttime sleep problems and adoptive parents’ self-judgment about their parenting. The girls were 1.7–6.9 years old (M= 4.6 years,SD= 1.0) and were adopted at 7–56 months (M= 13.9 months,SD= 6.6) by families in North America. At Wave 2 of a longitudinal study on adopted Chinese children’s development, the adoptive parents provided survey data on bedtime resistance or anxiety and parasomnias in their daughters and their own parental sense of entitlement and parenting competence. Results showed that controlling for child and family demographics, parasomnias, but not bedtime resistance or anxiety, negatively predicted parental sense of entitlement (B= -.13,p< .01) and parenting competence (B= -.14,p< .01). Screening for hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is not currently routinely recommended in internationally adopted children. International adoptees seen at the University of Minnesota International Adoption Clinic from 2006 to 2010 were assessed for acute HAV infection (positive HAV immunoglobulin M). Thirty of the 656 children screened (4.6%) were acutely HAV infected. HAV-infected children emigrated from Ethiopia (16), Guatemala (4), China (2), Colombia (2), Haiti (2), Philippines (2), Liberia (1), and Nepal (1). Infection was most frequent among children younger than 2 years (6.7%). No symptoms distinguished children with acute HAV infection from uninfected children. HAV infection caused significant social disruption, including separation of children from their ill adoptive parents during the initial weeks postarrival, a period important for postadoption adjustment and attachment. All international adoptees arriving from countries with high or intermediate HAV endemicity should be screened for HAV infection on arrival to the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This study aims to contribute to the body of knowledge about post-adoption functioning of international adoptees by examining patterns of anxiety among young children adopted from China by Australian families. The study had two objectives: to examine anxiety in children adopted from China comparing this sample to available normative data and to examine the associations among child anxiety and child (e.g., age at adoption) and parent (e.g., age, education level) factors. Parents of 59 children adopted from China completed online a number of measures of child anxiety, temperament, and parent psychological well-being. Results indicated a high prevalence of anxiety symptoms among the adopted children when compared with available data from normative samples, particularly related to separation contexts. A number of factors, including inhibited temperament and younger age of parents, were associated with child anxiety. Clinical and research implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
