The aim of this article is to develop an experiment and a procedure to investigate the restoration of water-damaged paper and archival materials using freeze drying in order to allow a reproducible test and comparison of the influence of different operating conditions on drying time and restored paper quality. Firstly, a reproducible method for the preparation of soaked samples simulating water-damaged paper has been developed. Then, the samples have been freeze-dried in a laboratory-scale apparatus that allowed monitoring the temperature as well as the weight of the samples. The technique of evaporative freezing, which reduces the drying time required, has been used in this case. An innovative procedure for the visualization of the progress of the drying process has been validated, thus allowing the validation of a simple phenomenological model of the time evolution of the ice core volume; in addition, data on the residual moisture of the dried paper sheets in different zones have been given. There are usually many sources for the supply of raw material to a pulp or paper mill in Sweden. Optimization of this supply is therefore a challenging task, and can only be managed properly if all aspects of risk are considered. In our study, these risks are related to when the weather reduces the load-bearing capacity of the ground or the roads. A stochastic and a deterministic model have been formulated, and they have been solved with mixed-integer quadratic programming and tested with data from a Swedish forest company. The results of this study show that the option value is greater than zero and that both the optimal policy and the option value change whenever the storage cost is altered. This paper focuses on the computation issue of portfolio optimisation with scenario-based mean-Average Value at Risk (AVaR) in credibilistic environment. The portfolio optimisation problem is designed in two cases: risk taker model and risk-averse model. The main idea is to replace the portfolio selection models with linear programming (LP) problems. Since the computing time required for solving LP greatly depends on the dimension and the structure of the problem, the conventional numerical methods are usually less effective in real-time applications. One promising approach to handle online applications is to employ recurrent neural networks based on circuit implementation. Hence, according to the convex optimisation theory and some concepts of ordinary differential equations, a neural network model for solving the LP problems related to portfolio selection problems is presented. The equilibrium point of the proposed model is proved to be equivalent to the optimal solution of the original problem. It is also shown that the proposed neural network model is stable in the sense of Lyapunov and it is globally convergent to an exact optimal solution of the portfolio selection problem with fuzzy returns. The article discusses the result of an experimental study which shows that people do not follow the optimal strategy in practice and suggests two strategies for defeating human opponents in rock-paper-scissors (RPS). The study found that the probability of repeating a game on the next trial is well above one-third, while the strategy of always playing the symbol is assessed to be an effective strategy in defeating the symbol that the other player has previously played. The study also observed that the wins of each competition have increased by 26.4%, while the losses are decreased by 9.51%.

Stochastic Block Models (SBMs) have emerged as a powerful framework for modelling community structures in networks. However, accurately determining the number of communities in SBMs remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for community detection in stochastic block models through penalized variational estimation. Our method introduces two penalties on the variational objective function to ensure elimination of redundant blocks. We present the variational computing procedure, and demonstrate through simulation and empirical analysis that our approach can effectively identifies community structures and achieves accurate parameter estimation simultaneously. In this paper, we study the distributed optimisation problem in an iterative environment, where the global objective function consists of agents' local objective functions, and each agent with the local objective function performs repeated tasks in finite time. The objective is to minimise the global objective function by the local communication of agents in the repeated running system. To solve this problem, we propose a distributed optimisation algorithm based on iterative learning methods that combines the terminal iterative learning strategy with the subgradient strategy. When the initial states of all agents are the same in each iteration, by the proposed algorithm, it is proved that all agents' states asymptotically converge to the optimal solution. Moreover, considering that the initial states of agents in each iteration may not be accurately measured, we further study the distributed optimisation problem under different initial states. We find that all agents' states asymptotically converge to the neighbourhood of the optimal solution. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by the numerical simulations. In this paper, we study convex risk measures with weak optimal transport penalties. In a first step, we show that these risk measures allow for an explicit representation via a nonlinear transform of the loss function. In a second step, we discuss computational aspects related to the nonlinear transform as well as approximations of the risk measures using, for example, neural networks. Our setup comprises a variety of examples, such as classical optimal transport penalties, parametric families of models, divergence risk measures, uncertainty on path spaces, moment constraints, and martingale constraints. In a last step, we show how to use the theoretical results for the numerical computation of worst-case losses in an insurance context and no-arbitrage prices of European contingent claims after quoted maturities in a model-free setting. Stope layout optimisation is considered one of the main steps in the design and strategic planning of underground mining operations. This paper investigates the influence of stope size and cut-off grade in an underground sublevel stoping operation in the presence of a preconcentration system using a newly developed mathematical optimisation model. The utilisation of a bulk ore sorting system, its effects on the resource utilisation, and the final discounted cash flow of a case study are presented. This paper investigates the performance of a novel artificial intelligence optimization technique in terms of designing a small size antenna that can be used for WLAN and WiMAX applications. In this regard, a boosted version of the arithmetic optimization algorithm is constructed as a novel artificial intelligence optimization technique with the aid of pattern search and elite opposition-based learning mechanisms. The proposed boosted arithmetic optimization algorithm is demonstrated for its superior explorative and exploitative behavior using classical fixed-dimensional, multimodal, and unimodal benchmark functions. The performance of the boosted arithmetic optimization algorithm is then presented for a real-world engineering optimization problem. For the latter challenge, a small size antenna that can be used for WLAN and WiMAX applications is designed. The obtained simulation results show that a compact small-sized patch antenna operating at WLAN and WiMAX frequencies can successfully be designed with the proposed boosted arithmetic optimization algorithm. Comparative evaluation against the state-of-the-art shows that efficiency is increased significantly since a bandwidth increase of up to $$21\% $$ 21 % is achieved even with a more than $$39\% $$ 39 % reduction in size. In this paper, we consider a bilinear optimal control with final observation for the heat equation. We first give the existence and uniqueness results of weak solutions under an integral constraints on the control and the state. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution to a quadratic boundary optimal control problem by means of compactness Sobolev space embedding. Then we provide a characterization of the optimal control via the Euler-Lagrange first-order optimality conditions. This paper solves the problem of designing positive functional $ H_{\infty } $ H ∞ filters for positive linear time-delay systems. In fact, we propose a new positive reduced order $ H_{\infty } $ H ∞ filter for positive linear constant state time-delay systems for which the states remain in the nonnegative orthant of the state space, subject to disturbances and unknown inputs. This paper is a first attempt to design positive unknown inputs functional $ H_{\infty } $ H ∞ filter for such positive linear delayed systems. The proposed approach is based on the positivity of an augmented system composed of dynamics of both considered system and proposed filter, on the unbiasedness of the estimation error by the resolution of Sylvester equation and also on Lyapunov-Krasovskii stability theory; then conditions for the establishment of such filters are formulated in terms of an optimization problem. Operations Research (OR) is a branch of applied mathematics that deals with optimization problems arising from different real contexts. The solving process of its problems is based on the construction and resolution of mathematical models, showing the possible connections between mathematics and the real world. Nevertheless, OR is not typically included in most curricula of higher secondary schools (i.e. Grades 9–12), but it is usually presented mainly at university level. To show how OR could be significant for these school students' education, the authors of this paper developed an educational project consisting of three teaching units. In this paper, we share the result of the teaching experiment related to the first unit, addressed to Grade 10. Qualitative and quantitative analyses show how it is appropriate to include OR and its typology of problems in regular school mathematics lectures. Second, these data also show how modelling and problem-solving skills, developed working with OR, can be fostered by implementing a collaborative way of working, also by making use of digital technologies. Lightweight cellular structures are investigated intensively in additive manufacturing and require optimization strategies to distribute both patterns, cross-sections sizes and type, and even materials. There exist several parametric optimization techniques that permit not only obtaining lightweight structures but also ensuring maintaining the rigidity. Among these techniques, design of experiments is time-consuming, and the values of the optimal parameters are estimated based on their possible range rather than being determined precisely. An original scientific strategy is to use the Kriging swarm optimization technique to achieve the global optimum using a minimal amount of computer simulations. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to determine the optimal cross-sections of structures using bio-inspired "L-systems". These L-systems-based structures were created and distributed along the directions of the principal stress lines (PSLs), then mimicking material growth and distribution inside biological structures. Two PSLs directions were separately investigated for each load case; the first direction is used as a guide for the growth of L-systems and the second one serves for branch extensions and limitations. To do so, a metamodel is used upon particle swarm optimization technique (PSO) and several case studies are conducted to improve the stiffness-to-weight ratio while respecting the additive manufacturability. The distributed optimisation problem with privacy-preserving properties is considered in this paper. To solve this problem, a zero-gradient-sum algorithm based on output mask is proposed. An event-triggered condition is designed by using the output mask, which reduces the communication burden of the system effectively. The theoretical results show that the proposed algorithm can solve the optimisation problem, while the privacy information of nodes is preserved. In addition, the event-triggered condition designed based on the output mask can effectively avoid Zeno behaviour. Two simulation cases are performed to validate the effectiveness of the algorithm. The propulsion system of mine boring machines often experiences severe vibration during mining. To suppress the vibration of the main beam system of roadheader and prevent the excessive fatigue of propulsion system, a magnetic nonlinear energy sink (MNES) is designed to suppress vibration. In this paper, firstly, the structure and design principle of MNES are introduced, and the dynamic equations of the main beam-MNES system are established. On this basis, the genetic algorithm is applied to optimize the vibration suppression of MNES, and the optimal parameters are determined. In results, the accumulative energy dissipation rate of optimal MNES in transient vibration can reach 90.2% and the vibration reduction effect of the optimal MNES in steady-state vibration is about 82.2%. Electric vehicles (EV) are moderately defeating more roads and replacing pollutants of classical vehicles. Due to rising EV, it is imperative to provide charging stations. However, unscheduled EVs are left because of the unavailability of adequate energy or charging slots. This paper develops an optimisation aware technique for charge scheduling in EV. The first step is the simulation of EV in the Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) model. Here, the discovery of the changing request from EVs and accessible charging stations is performed. Then, the charge scheduling algorithm is called for scheduling the EV, wherein the charge scheduling algorithm is newly modelled using Jaya-based Multi-Verse Optimizer (JMVO). The proposed JMVO is devised by combining Multi-Verse Optimiser (MVO) and Jaya optimisation algorithm. Here, a multiobjective fitness function is newly devised with certain parameters, including charging cost, user preference, remaining power and distance parameter. As per the scheduling method, the EVs are allocated to the charging station. Then, the EV charging scheduling model attributes are updated to expose the method's efficiency. This paper presents a numerical approach to solve the estimator-based filtering problem of a linear system with multiple and distributed delays. We consider the problem of finding a filter or estimator that suppresses the $ \mathcal {H}_2 $ H 2 filtering cost on the transfer matrix from a given noise input to the filtering error. By solving an optimisation problem associated with the $ \mathcal {H}_2 $ H 2 performance, the gain matrices of the filter are obtained. The present study is done to perform the optimal design of the structural components of the buildings against the unwanted wind load exerted on their outer face. To this end, the case study of the research is the outer wall made of a one-floor building modeled as a rectangular plate with only one free edge and three clamped ones. It is assumed that the wall is a sandwich plate whose core is made of auxetic material and dace-sheets are reinforced with nanoparticles of graphene platelets (GPL). Differential equations governing the system's motion are obtained within the background of the plate's shear-deformation theories. The stability analysis of the sandwich wall is performed based on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods optimized with an innovative optimization approach to gain a high level of accuracy. To determine the stability information of the system at the train points, the differential quadrature approach (DQA) is applied as the solver of differential equations of motion. The accuracy of the methods used in this paper is examined and verified by comparing the results with those acquired in the articles published previously. One of the primary challenges in distributed systems, such as cloud computing, lies in ensuring that data objects are accessible within a reasonable timeframe. To address this challenge, the data objects are replicated across multiple servers. Estimating the minimum quantity of data replicas and their optimal placement is considered an NP-complete optimization problem. The primary objectives of the current research include minimizing data processing costs, reducing the quantity of replicas, and maximizing the applied algorithms' reliability in replica placement. This paper introduces a hybrid chaos-based swarm approach using the modified shuffle-frog leaping algorithm with a new local search strategy for replicating data in distributed systems. Taking into account the algorithm's performance in static settings, the introduced method reduces the expenses associated with replica placement. The results of the experiment conducted on a standard data set indicate that the proposed approach can decrease data access time by about 33% when using approximately seven replicas. When executed several times, the suggested method yields a standard deviation of approximately 0.012 for the results, which is lower than the result existing algorithms produce. In this paper, we propose a general distributionally robust regression model based on distributionally robust optimization theory. The proposed model has a piecewise linear loss function and elastic net penalty term, and it generalizes many other regression models. We prove the piecewise linear property of the optimal solutions to this model, which enables us to develop a solution path algorithm for the hyperparameter tuning. A Doubly regularized Least Absolute Deviations (DrLAD) regression model is proposed based on this framework, and a solution path algorithm is developed to speed up the tuning of two hyperparameters in this model. The sheer number of publications that deal with the topic of optimizing the management of river basins has grown exponentially since the early 1980s, and this growth is still on the rise. Despite this, the practical actions of most reservoir operators are still based on their gut feelings, or at best on straightforward rules that did not originate from rigorous scientific studies but are rather the result of the operator's experience or simple spreadsheet calculations. Many publications have already pointed out the gap between theory and practice over the past few decades; however, none have so far offered clear guidelines on how to overcome this gap. This paper presents an extensive literature review to examine potential reasons for this gap. Thermo-elastic systems have a wide range of applications in various engineering fields. Traditional single-objective topology optimization (TO) design of thermos-elastic structures is difficult to achieve the combined optimum of multiple properties, and the non-periodic TO design of results are complex and difficult to fabricate. This paper introduces a multi-objective TO formulation based on density for designing thermo-elastic structures with periodic constraints, aiming to overcome the aforementioned issues. This paper assesses two competing weighted objective functions, the first function corresponds to structural and thermal compliance, while the second pertains to regional temperature and global stress. To solve the optimization issue, we utilize the p-norm function with a modified coefficient for evaluating the maximum temperature and stress values. Additionally, the adjoint variable method is employed to evaluate the sensitivity of various objectives, while the method of moving asymptotes (MMA) is used to update the design variables. Then the influence of different weight coefficients and subregion numbers regarding thermos-elastic coupled analysis is demonstrated through numerical examples. The results show that the complexity of the subregion features decreases as the number of subregions increases, and that changing both the number of subregions and the weighting coefficients results in changes in the overall structural performance. Finally, the geometric model is reconstructed using the TO results, and the structural performance is validated through the simulation of the reconstructed model. Combinational logic circuits (CLCs) are basic building blocks of a system and optimization of these circuits in terms of reduced gates, transistors, or levels will lead to reduced area on chip, reduced power, and improved speed. Simulated annealing (SA) is a thermo-inspired metaheuristic used for solving various engineering and non-engineering problems. SA is also used for the realization and optimization of CLCs. Circuits with a large number of inputs and outputs require more generations for realization. Realization of the optimal circuit with fewer generations is desired as realization time increases with increase in the number of generations. In this paper, an attempt is made to realize circuits using population-based SA with fewer generations. SA with partitioning approach is proposed in this paper for circuits that could not be realized with fewer preset generations. To evaluate the performance of the proposed work, benchmark circuits from LGSynth'91 are considered, and it is observed that the success rate improved and realization time reduced with the proposed partitioning approach. During the evaluation, it is also observed that the gate count was reduced by 2.5–77.39% and the transistor count was reduced by 7.69–95.53% on using proposed work with fewer generations over circuits reported in the literature. Box's paper helicopter has been used to teach experimental design for more than a decade. It is simple, inexpensive, and provides real data for an involved, multifactor experiment. Unfortunately it can also further an all-too-common practice that Professor Box himself has repeatedly cautioned against, namely ignoring the fundamental science while rushing to solve problems that may not be sufficiently understood. Often this slighting of the science so as to get on with the statistics is justified by referring to Box's oft-quoted maxim that "All models are wrong, however some are useful." Nevertheless, what is equally true, to paraphrase both Professor Box and George Orwell, is that "All models are wrong, but some are more wrong than others." To experiment effectively it is necessary to understand the relevant science so as to distinguish between what is usefully wrong, and what is dangerously wrong. This article presents an improved analysis of Box's helicopter problem relying on statistical and engineering knowledge and shows that this leads to an enhanced paper helicopter, requiring fewer experimental trails and achieving superior performance. In fact, of the 20 experimental trials run for validation–10 each of the proposed aerodynamic design and the conventional full factorial optimum–the longest 10 flight times all belong to the aerodynamic optimum, while the shortest 10 all belong to the conventional full factorial optimum. Variational weighted fuzzy time series models are known to perform better than traditional fuzzy time series models, due to their ability to handle outliers and noise. However, the performance of variational weighted fuzzy time series models is highly dependent on the partitioning of the universe of discourse. In this paper, we propose a novel variational weighted fuzzy model integrated with particle swarm optimization for choosing the best possible partitioning of the universe of discourse. Our approach combines the strengths of variational weighted fuzzy time series to handle uncertain and imprecise data and particle swarm optimization techniques to find the best model parameters. We evaluate the performance of the proposed approach on standard time series datasets and compare it with other forecasting methods in the literature. A new multi gain SC inverter topology with fewer switching components and lower voltage stress is presented in this paper. It comprises eight switches and two capacitors, which raise the output voltage by three times the supply voltage. The capacitors voltages are automatically balanced to ensure proper operation. The circuit constructional, operation, and parameter optimisation techniques are discussed in details. A simple logic-based multicarrier Level Shift Pulse Width Modulation (LS-PWM) is employed to control the switching operation that reduces the complexity of the control circuit. Furthermore, a comparative analysis with other recent topologies has been presented to demonstrate the virtues of this approach. Electricity load prediction plays a vital role in energy management. The necessity of combining scattered power generation channels of sustainable energy and other substitute resources into distribution grid networks is increasing because of the 4.1 percent rise in world electricity since 2021. The utilization of probability power generators and energy storage is maximized by short-term load prediction methods, which make it possible to anticipate potential energy usage. To facilitate the growth of energy systems in quite a sustainable way, urban energy planners utilize a range of methods and technological advances, including simulation, probability optimization, comprehensive improvement, and modelling techniques for predicting power requirements. Predicting energy consumption at granular time scales (e.g., hourly or sub-hourly intervals) is common practice for short-term energy load prediction. For similar time-series forecasting challenges, the authors have decided to use transfer learning (TL) with light gradient-boosting machine (LightGBM).1 This model can benefit from models trained on larger data sets through TL, which might boost prediction accuracy. Energy prediction and effective resource utilization largely support the accurate transition of energy systems. In this paper, the authors propose a hybrid model for short-term energy load prediction. Based on TL to optimize LightGBM (OLGBM) for smart grids, The proposed model first applies data pre-processing using an abnormal supplement strategy with an immediate deviation selection technique. This phase eliminates the missing values and extracts the required features.The second phase uses a TL-OLGBM with hyperparameters. The TL method helps to learn the dynamic time scale and complex data patterns, and the hyperparameters are tuned via the Bayesian optimization technique, which addresses the challenge of short-term load forecasting (STLF) and increases forecasting accuracy. Finally, an optimized LightGBM model is applied, combining the time and energy features to predict effective energy forecasting. The proposed model gained a 2.834589 mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) value and a 0.9706495 GINI index after execution on the prescribed data set. We compare the performance of the proposed model with other comparable models, and the simulation outcomes show that the model can generate the best results for MAPE, accuracy, and root-mean-square deviation (RMSE). Over the years, several achievements have been made in power generation and optimising hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) to achieve nature conservation, achieve energy security, and reduce carbon emissions. The drying process is a crucial stage in the thermal treatment of iron ore pellets in a straight grate, as it has a direct impact on pellet quality and energy consumption. Consequently, this paper develops a simulation model for the pellet bed drying process, which is validated through industrial data and enables the visualization of temperature and moisture distribution within the pellet bed. Based on the simulation model, an optimization model for the drying process is developed to minimize the specific energy consumption per tonne of green pellets. The constraints of the drying process are the moisture content requirements and burst temperature. A genetic algorithm is employed to optimize the parameters such as trolley speed, pellet bed thickness, air temperature, and air pressure. The results show that, with an absolute error criterion of 10 °C, the temperature calculation accuracy of the simulation model exceeds 86%, effectively describing the drying process in a straight grate sintering machine. Under yield limitations, the optimal cumulative energy consumption per tonne of green pellet is reduced by 1.50% during the drying process. Finally, a simulation and optimization system for the drying process in the straight grate is implemented in C++. This system not only generates essential data for designing the drying section in a straight grate but also lays a theoretical foundation for system optimization and optimal control. Several recent works address the impact of inexact oracles in the convergence analysis of modern first-order optimization techniques, e.g. Bregman Proximal Gradient and Prox-Linear methods as well as their accelerated variants, extending their field of applicability. In this paper, we consider situations where the oracle's inexactness can be chosen upon demand, more precision coming at a computational price counterpart. Our main motivations arise from oracles requiring the solving of auxiliary subproblems or the inexact computation of involved quantities, e.g. a mini-batch stochastic gradient as a full-gradient estimate. We propose optimal inexactness schedules according to presumed oracle cost models and patterns of worst-case guarantees, covering among others convergence results of the aforementioned methods under the presence of inexactness. Specifically, we detail how to choose the level of inexactness at each iteration to obtain the best trade-off between convergence and computational investments. Furthermore, we highlight the benefits one can expect by tuning those oracles' accuracy instead of keeping it constant throughout. Finally, we provide extensive numerical experiments that support the practical interest of our approach, both in offline and online settings, applied to the Fast Gradient algorithm. As an initial block in the receiver front-end, LNA needs to achieve high gain with minimal noise at high frequencies. LNA designs at 5G communication have drawbacks such as increased noise figure, minimum gain, and poor linearity. A CMOS Low-Noise Amplifier for the frequency range of 30 GHz with optimization technique of current reuse technique and linearization technique is proposed and implemented to obtain maximum gain with reduced noise figure with improved linearity in this paper. The linearization technique improves the input of third-order intercept point $ ({II{P_3}}) $ (II P 3 ) of an LNA. The parameters, such as sufficient gain, low noise and enhanced linearity, are considered to design the LNA for wireless 5G communication. The proposed design shows an improvement in gain and lesser noise figure compared to conventional designs. The simulation results show that the proposed LNA provides a maximum gain of 20.6 dB, a noise figure of 3.1 dB and $ II{P_3} $ II P 3 of 6 dB at 30 GHz with a power consumption of 6.2 mW from a supply voltage of 1.2 V. For distribution networks with fuzzy network structure or large scale, traditional reliability assessment is limited by data collection and lack of data samples. Compared with traditional methods, the distribution network reliability prediction method can use fewer data to calculate and obtain reliability results, and its operation is simpler and more practical. In this paper, a distribution network original parameters and reliability prediction method based on wavelet neural network (WNN) and quantum particle swarm optimization algorithm (QPSO) is proposed. Firstly, given the blindness of mother wavelet selection, this paper analyses the error and running time through example analysis and selects the most suitable mother wavelet for distribution network reliability prediction. According to the characteristics of premature convergence of QPSO, the evolutionary speed factor and aggregation factor are introduced to modify the scaling factor to control the convergence of the algorithm. The improved QPSO is used to optimize the initial values and thresholds of the WNN. It can reduce their influence on the prediction results. Finally, the analysis results of different examples show that the method has higher forecast accuracy, better generalization ability, and stability. The efficient design of the aerodynamic surfaces in the aircraft allows the optimal performance of the vehicle and the reduction of the fuel consumption. Among these surfaces, the wing is the main contributor to the force which lifts the aircraft enabling the flight. However, the application of this force out of the center of gravity generates a moment that must be balanced through a force applied in the Horizontal-Tail-Plane (HTP) reaching the longitudinal trim of the aircraft. Traditionally, the design of the wing and HTP have been performed iteratively attaining suboptimal or time ineffective results. In this paper, we solve this problem through the application of a Genetic Algorithm for the combined optimization of the wing and the HTP by adjusting the aspect ratio, the taper ratio, the twist angle and the incidence angle of both surfaces to produce the optimal balance of lift adjusting its distribution to an elliptical configuration and enabling the longitudinal trim. The lock valve plays an important role during normal shift and power failure in heavy-dutyautomatic transmissions. A new kind of lock valve was designed in this paper, and the main purpose of this paper is to improve the working performance of the lock valve. Firstly, the AMESim simulation model of the lock valve was built based on the analysis of the working circuit of the lock valve, and the influence of several design parameters on the lock valve working performance were analysed, which provided a reliable theoretical basis for the subsequent optimisation research. Additionally, thecomplete second-orderresponse surface model between design parameters and output oil pressure response time and control oil pressure fluctuation is established based on ISE and ITAE criteria. Finally, the particle swarm optimisation(PSO) algorithm and Box-Behnkenresponse surface methodology were applied to the optimisation of the mathematical model. The optimisation results have shown that the two optimisation methods can significantly improve the output oil pressure response speed of the lock valve, but the optimisation results of Box-Behnkenresponse surface methodology are more stable than the PSO algorithm in the control oil pressure, and the growth fluctuation is smaller. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to verify whether a finite game is a coset weighted potential game (WPG) without pre-knowledge on its coset weights. This algorithm can also provide a recursive method to calculate the unknown coset weights. Then we give the concept of near coset WPGs based on evolutionary equivalence between two finite games, and its algebraic verification is obtained. Finally, the application of near coset WPGs to game-theoretical optimisation of multi-agent systems is discussed, which can improve the applicability of potential games in multi-agent optimisation problems. Since last few decades, a lot of work has been done on the evolutionary techniques to solve the optimisation problems. With the time passes, these techniques were modified, and also new algorithms were introduced to improve the performance. These techniques had been used by many researchers in synthesis of mechanisms to get the optimum results with minimum design errors. Improved harmony search (IHS) algorithm is developed from harmony search technique by improvising the harmony in HS algorithm. This technique is inspired by searching the best state of harmony in musical process in which a jazz musician make practice after practice to find the same. In this paper, IHS algorithm is utilized to synthesize four-bar path generation mechanism. A mathematical model was derived using vector loop closure equation, wherein the error function, representing positional error between actual and desired points, was considered for forming objective function. The penalty function was used to prevent violation of structural constraints corresponding to Grashof's criteria and input crank angle sequence. Three different cases were studied with ten, fifteen and eighteen precision points with and without prescribed timings. In order to mitigate the impact of temperature and irradiation variations on photovoltaic (PV) panels, it is crucial to employ the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique. This paper introduces a novel MPPT approach that provides a reference current, denoted as Iref, to extract the maximum power from the PV array. The difference between the input current Ipv, and Iref is then fed into a PID controller, which adjusts the duty cycle accordingly to control the Quadratic Boost Converter (QBC). The proposed MPPT approach is based on the analysis of measurement data obtained from PV panels. From this, a linear mathematical function between Iref and solar irradiation is achieved. To assess the performance of this approach, a comparative study is being carried out not only with conventional MPPT techniques such as P&O and INC-COND but also with modern techniques such as ANN, PSO, FLC, and improved P&O (IMP-P&O). The simulation results clearly demonstrate enhanced tracking performance under various test conditions, including the Step & Ropp test, as well as real profiles for both sunny and cloudy days. Certainly, the novel approach shows its ability to outperform both conventional and modern methods with a faster convergence speed (less than 2 milliseconds), the lowest steady-state oscillations (less than 0.25 Watts), and the highest tracking efficiency (greater than 99.79%). Water distribution networks (WDNs) require large capital investment and ongoing operational costs, resulting in their optimisation being a highly researched field. Despite the benefits tanks bring to networks, most optimisation models omit them as decision variables due to the complexity they can introduce to heuristic approaches. This paper addresses the least-cost optimisation of WDN design and operation through the development and application of the Small-network Configurator for Optimising Pump Energy consumption (SCOPE). The SCOPE algorithm incorporates pipes, pumps and tanks as decision variables and solves the optimisation problem through an iterative approach that pairs EPANET simulation results with subsequent hydraulic calculations to converge on the pumping and storage configuration which yields the lowest energy consumption. The SCOPE output can then be used to seed further optimisation techniques. This paper presents the development of hybrid machine learning models to forecast the natural flows of water bodies. Five models were considered under the analysis: extreme gradient boosting (XGB), extreme learning machine (ELM), support vector regression (SVR), elastic net linear model (EN), and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The grey wolf optimization algorithm (GWO) optimized all of the models' internal parameters. A feature selection approach was embedded in the hybrid model to reduce the number of input variables. The hybrid model performed the forecasts considering one, three, five, and seven days ahead on data collected from Cahora Bassa dam, Mozambique. In the experiments conducted in this paper, XGB outperformed EN, ELM, MARS, and SVR, presenting lower prediction error and uncertainty. In this paper, critical analysis of performance comparison of various optimization techniques for a MRPID (Multi Resolution Proportional Integral Derivative) thermal system controller is presented. This controller controls the uncertainty or mismatch between real and reference temperature. Wavelet coefficients of error between the two temperatures and their corresponding gains are added to produce a control signal for the thermal system. The main purpose of the proposed method is to optimize the tuning parameters of a wavelet-based MRPID controller to regulate the switching pulse of the thermal system. Modeling and simulations are carried out using MATLAB/Simulink@2015. Methods for optimization of islanded microgrid systems are usually based on hourly models where each subcomponent is described by a simple algebraic model. There are many studies on this topic, which are usually based on the minimization of total lifetime cost by determining the number of required batteries, wind turbines, PV panels, the positioning of PV panels, etc. In this paper, we further improve the modeling of the microgrid system optimization process by developing a simplified algebraic model that uses one parameter to simulate accelerated battery degradation with respect to depth of discharge. The model consists of simply linearly increasing the degradation of the battery when the state of charge (SOC) becomes lower than a fixed value, and the only model constant is the factor of degradation f. The objective of the paper is to examine the effect of the degree of degradation on the obtained optimal microgrid system parameters. The analysis was performed for several different systems, and the results show that optimal parameters of the system and the overall system cost strongly depend on battery degradation characteristics. The overall system cost can be reduced by 1–6% for lower battery degradation rates and up to 20% for high degradation factor cases. The paper is focused on the numerical analysis of the two-point inverse stationary heat flow problem, namely the identification of the thermal load. Determination of selected parameters is possible on the basis of temperature measurements, done at specified few locations. This problem may be modelled as the optimization problem, standard numerical analysis of which requires multiple solutions of boundary value problems. However, the novel solution approach, proposed here, is based on the well-known concept of the Monte Carlo method with an appropriate random walk technique. It yields explicit stochastic relations combining computed temperatures and all load parameters. Such relations may be directly applied in most standard optimization algorithms, replacing time-consuming solutions of systems of algebraic equations. Moreover, one may construct the semi-analytical approach, in which the unknown load parameters are obtained explicitly, allowing for the elimination of sensitiveness to initial solutions or requirements for admissible load intervals. The paper is illustrated with results of several benchmark problems with simulated measurement data and various numbers of unknown load parameters. The results comparison, between standard element-free methods with selected optimization algorithms as well as the proposed Monte Carlo solution approach is presented and is especially focused on CPU times. This paper presents a gradient-informed design optimization of nuclear reactor core components based on neutronics objectives with both continuous and discrete materials. The main argument in favor of using gradient-informed design optimization is that it scales well with increasing dimensionality of the design space. First, a challenge problem with 121 free parameters is solved with a gradient-informed method and then with a genetic algorithm. Then, a challenge problem to optimize the flux profile of a simplified assembly with eight axial zones is solved. Both challenge problems are solved using directly calculated derivatives from Tools for Sensitivity and Uncertainty Analysis Methodology Implementation (TSUNAMI) in the SCALE package. This work also demonstrates how a discrete optimization problem—selection of materials for 121 voxels—can be lifted into a continuous problem with mixed materials. In the continuous space, adjoint-based gradients are well-defined, and gradient descent is applicable. Then, a forcing function is introduced that with the selection of an appropriately sized hyperparameter can be used to guide the optimized continuous solution back into a discrete solution. This paper presents an account of the challenges that were faced when applying a gradient-informed optimization algorithm using a Monte Carlo calculation to estimate the gradient information and compares a gradient descent optimization method to a genetic algorithm optimization of the same geometry. This paper presents an efficient method to improve the far-field radiation pattern of concentric circular antenna array (CCAA) design using two stochastic optimization algorithms known as social spider algorithm (SSA) and modified social spider algorithm (MSSA). Low side lobe level (SLL) plays a crucial role in reducing the interference with the other frequency components along the entire side lobes of the far-field radiation pattern. SSA and MSAA are the state-of-the-art evolutionary optimization techniques which are applied here to determine the optimal current amplitude and the inter-element distance between two consecutive antennae of the 3-ring CCAA. In this paper, the optimal results achieved by using SSA, MSSA for (4, 6, 8) elements and (8, 10, 12) elements 3-ring CCAAs, with and without centre elements are reported. The results achieved by employing SSA and MSSA show a considerable improvement in SLL reduction as compared to the uniform and the other array patterns reported in the state-of-the-art literature. Panax notoginseng is a valuable herb with geographical indication, and the quality and price of P. notoginseng from different origins are very different. Therefore, this paper proposes a rapid and accurate method for identifying the origins of P. notoginseng by collecting the roots of P. notoginseng. This paper improves the whale optimization algorithm in terms of global convergence and convergence speed, introduces the Levy flight strategy and reconstructed whale synergy factor A, and applies it to the parameter optimization of support vector machines, to obtain a high-performance classification model. The improved whale optimization algorithm model identifies the origin of P. notoginseng by discriminating their terahertz spectra. Compared with the commonly used genetic algorithm and the original whale optimization algorithm, improvement in the whale optimization algorithm was able to avoid falling into local optimum solutions more effectively while having a high convergence rate. Accordingly, the improved whale optimization algorithm optimized support vector machine model obtained an overall accuracy of 98.44%, which was significantly higher than the 95.31% overall accuracy of the genetic algorithm optimized support vector machine model and the 96.88% overall accuracy of the whale optimization algorithm optimized support vector machine model.
