Reports on the launch of the position paper 'Understanding Compression Therapy' during the 2003 European Wound Management Association conference in Pisa, Italy.

Leading an empowered organisation (LEO) is a 3-day course that has been delivered to over 40000 front-line managers in the NHS, among them many district nurses. The aim of this review was to identify and assess all published literature about LEO; to critically appraise such evidence relating to the impact of LEO on participants' leadership behaviour and to critically appraise any evidence of the need for follow-up activities to sustain participants learning. Because of the limited quantity and quality of research literature (n=6) it was considered legitimate to also include discussion papers (n=2) and descriptive papers (n=4) in the review. All papers were reviewed using a framework devised by the author broadly based on the critical appraisal checklist for qualitative research (Greenhalgh and Donald, 2000). From the available evidence it can be concluded that the LEO programme does have a positive impact on the leadership behaviour of participants, and that follow-up activities are valuable to consolidate and sustain participants' learning. Information about several papers discussed at a summer meeting by the Society for Research in Rehabilitation in Bath, England on July 1-2, 2009 is presented. Topics include the psychological approaches to rehabilitation of people with chronic pain, the connection between disturbances in sensory feedback and motor planning, and the assistive technology for patients with upper motor neurone disorder. The meeting features several doctors including Candy McCabe, Lance McCracken, and Diane Dixon.

The article reports that delegates at the National Association Equipment Providers (NAEP) conference will be able to share and exchange best practice through poster presentation. The NAEP education special interest group (SIG) provides a guidance paper to guide the delegates through the abstract process which can be downloaded from the NAEP website or obtained via electronic mail from anitajrush@aol.com. The abstract must contain a maximum of 250 words and the poster size is a maximum of 2.5 feet wide by 5.5 feet high.

The objective of the event was to increase the focus on the vital areas of innovation, education and implementation within wound healing and wound management. During the conference, the latest position document on the management of wound infection was launched by the European Wound Management Association. Furthermore, a number of abstracts of research were also presented.
