This article will investigate the district nurse's role in managing urinary catheter blockages, looking at why people require long-term catheterisation and the causes of blockages and then reviewing treatment methods. Current practice will be critically analysed and compared to the most up to date research and literature to inform district nurses of best evidence-based practice in the hopes of improving service user outcomes and quality of life and reducing the impact this problem has upon district nursing services with regards to time and resources. With the increasing success of New Journalism before World War 1, hopes for labour daily papers crystallised. This article speculates on four attempts to counter conservative media as seen through the youthful eyes of Vance Palmer. In London, he participated in the foundation of the successful labour paper the Daily Herald, and he wrote for the British Labour Party daily. Returning to Australia in 1912, he sought to work for a proposed Sydney-based daily paper, and for the successful Queensland's Labor Daily Standard, as a correspondent. When taking Palmer's observations into account—drawing on original material from his letters, and set in a context of comparing the four papers—a largely untold story of ambitious design emerges. The scheme of Commonwealth Labor daily newspapers across the nation still lacks its history. Cultural leadership through the commitment of leading men and women, even strike leaders, able to appeal to the passions of writers, editors and readers, and experienced staff utilising an inclusive forum inviting diverse and militant standpoints, may have proved more critical to riding the explosion of radical left idealism in the successful establishment of newspapers, and surviving the suppression of war, than managerial leadership or raising enough economic capital. The article revisits the battle between men and women in the essay "The Repulsion of the Sexes and the Future of Man" by Leontine Cooper published in the October 1883 issue of the newspapers "Courier" and "The Queenslander." Topics discussed are women's suffrage, environmental, political and social conditions in Queensland in contrast to England, masculinity and racism, young women and men in negotiating emotions and property, marriage contract, economic situation of women, and gender roles.

Women across the western world began to focus on obtaining the vote in the last decades of the nineteenth century. One of the first strategies of the specifically dedicated Women's Equal Franchise Association (WEFA) in Brisbane, Australia was to collect signatures calling for "one woman, one vote." The very wording of the petition became a point of contention in challenges over leadership of the new association. A subsequent, non-partisan breakaway group formed and also collected signatures. This article addresses the initiation, collection, and submission of the WEFA petition and the 1897 petition collected by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Addressing forms of political intervention amid contentious politics allows a more nuanced analysis of the broader women's movement's engagement with petitions, which were crucial in the formation of the more narrowly focused associations and participants' ongoing strategies. The often-vituperative representation of suffragists in the press highlights their achievements in mobilizing mass support for the vote and establishing a measure of legitimacy. Two novel series of hydroxymethyl group-appended quaternary nitrogen surfactants (QNSs) based on the aliphatic N-alkyl-trimethylammonium and aromatic N-alkylpyridinium head groups were synthesized from the appropriate nitrogen head group precursor and 1-bromoalkane. The QNSs were characterized using H and C nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy, and their purity confirmed using elemental analysis. The solution behavior of the QNSs was investigated by conductivity, assessing both the aggregation concentration as well as the amount of counter-ion dissociation. The results showed a general decrease in the aggregation concentration for the compounds with the hydroxymethyl addition, where the pyridinium compounds were more affected than the ammonium QNSs. In contrast, the extent of counter-ion dissociation (α) from the aggregate was slightly increased for the ammonium compounds but that of the pyridinium compounds was not generally affected by the structural modification. The article explores the modernist sensibility of the cultural criticism and editorial interventions of essayist and biographer Nettie Palmer. It notes Palmer's pre-war engagement with early modernism, her links with overseas modernists, and her role as a non-academic critic in interwar Australia. It also describes the selection and editing process for "An Australian Story Book," a selection of short stories anthologized by Palmer in 1928 and features Katherine Susannah Prichard's "The Cooboo."

In Australia as elsewhere within the belligerent nations of the Great War, dissenting thinkers were marginalised with the mobilisation of militarism. Vance and Nettie Palmer, Australia's most important literary partnership in the interwar period, were initially critical of the war, their response typical of the English radical intelligentsia among whom they were living at the time of its outbreak. Forced back to Australia in 1915, the Palmers had to re-establish themselves in its increasingly turbulent intellectual battlefields. Nettie's earlier anti-war beliefs and cosmopolitanism were undermined while Vance became ever more deeply enmeshed in a discourse concerning the virtues of the “ordinary people”, which encompassed the men of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Nevertheless, in their extensive writings about Australia, neither Palmer ever endorsed the legend of the heroic Anzacs. The Great War, however, profoundly shaped their political consciousness and their choice of genre and writing strategies, as it did others of their literary generation. This article will show that the war was a far more important influence on their work than usually acknowledged in Australian literary scholarship, and thereby reveal some of the cultural patterns that shaped their generation of Australian radical writers and intellectuals — particularly in Melbourne, arguably the heartland for the tradition of democratic literary nationalism which the Palmers have been seen to epitomise.
