The non-scanning radiometer with short-wavelength (SW: 0.2–5.0 μm) and total-wavelength (TW: 0.2–50.0 μm) channels is the primary payload of the Integrated Earth–Moon Radiation Observation System (IEMROS), which is designed to provide comprehensive Earth radiation measurements and lunar calibrations at the L1 Lagrange point of the Earth–Moon system from a global perspective. This manuscript introduces a radiometer preflight calibration methodology, which involves background removal and is validated using accurate and traceable reference sources. Simulated Earth view tests are performed to evaluate repeatability, linearity, and gain coefficients over the operating range. Both channels demonstrate repeatability uncertainties better than 0.34%, indicating consistent and reliable measuring performance. Comparative polynomial regression analysis confirms significant linear response characteristics with two-channel nonlinearity less than 0.20%. Gain coefficients are efficiently determined using a two-point calibration approach. Uncertainty analysis reveals an absolute radiometric calibration accuracy of 0.97% for the SW channel and 0.92% for the TW channel, underscoring the non-scanning radiometer's capability to provide dependable global Earth radiation budget data crucial to environmental and climate studies. The Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems Technology Demonstration (TEMPEST-D) instrument is a five-frequency millimeter-wave radiometer operating from 87 to 181 GHz. The cross-track scanning radiometer has been operating on a 6U CubeSat in low Earth orbit since September 5, 2018. The direct-detection architecture of the radiometer reduces its mass and power consumption by eliminating the need for a local oscillator and mixer, also reducing system complexity. The instrument includes a scanning reflector and ambient calibration target. The reflector rotates continuously to scan the antenna beams in the cross-track direction, first across the blackbody calibration target, then toward the Earth over the full range of incidence angles, and finally to cosmic microwave background radiation at 2.73 K. This enables precision end-to-end calibration of the millimeter-wave receivers during every 2-s scan period. In the application of ultraviolet (UV light), it is necessary to obtain reliable information on UV effectiveness, i.e., one should know the fluence reached by microorganisms or the dose absorbed by chemicals. For this reason, a collimated beam apparatus (CBA) is widely used. International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) recommends a protocol on CBA in which the beams are assumed to be collimated. In this work, focusing on the fact that so-called collimated beams are not really collimated, a mathematical model for CBA is established, and the influencing factors and specifications of CBA are rigorously analyzed. The aperture type not only has high measurement accuracy, but its specific characteristics are also suitable for the calibration of radiometers in chemical actinometers. Solar diffusers (SDs) have often been used as the onboard calibrators for the radiometric calibration of reflective solar band imaging sensors. After being spaceborne, the reflectance of SDs is observed to degrade with spectral dependence due to exposure to solar UV and energetic particle radiation. Long-term spectral reflectance data of SDs onboard multiple LEO imaging sensors, such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on SNPP, are analyzed. The reflectance of SDs on these three instruments degrades faster for the shorter wavelength (0.4– $0.6~\mu \text{m}$) bands than the longer wavelength bands. The Surface Roughness-induced Rayleigh Scattering (SRRS) model is applied to simulate the SD degradation on these instruments, and the growth of the surface roughness parameter of the SDs is derived. It is determined that the change of surface roughness scale length is ~tens of nanometers. To show the consistency of roughness growth rates among the SDs on Terra/Aqua MODIS and SNPP VIIRS instruments, the functional dependences of the growth rates are characterized according to the SD exposure time and the stage of surface roughness. It is also found that the flattening or reverse in the growth trend of the surface roughness for these three SDs occurred around the same interval between October 2013 and October 2015. The confirmation of the applicability of SRRS model with the long-term spectral reflectance data from three independent spaceborne SDs facilitates a better understanding of the origin and physical processes of the SD degradation. Predictable quantum efficient detectors (PQEDs), based on photoelectric effect in silicon semiconductor, have proved their potential as optical radiant power primary standard. At present, simulations for semiconductor devices are the common method to predict the response of a PQED. As an alternative, this work investigates the feasibility of an experimental technique, the self-calibration of silicon photodiodes at room temperature by means of temperature sensors. A device which compares two physics principles by optical power, working both as a photodetector and a radiometer based on electrical substitution, was made. The device allows for measuring the current generated under irradiation (in photocurrent mode) and the heating of the system, induced by a laser or forward biasing, to determine the optical power (in thermal mode). The feasibility study consists of testing the equivalence between both modes and establishing the suitable range of optical power. The range of optimum optical power level, where both modes run in the linear domain at the present configuration, is from 300 µW up to 1 mW. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) reflective solar bands (RSBs) are calibrated on-orbit using a solar diffuser (SD) with its degradation tracked by an onboard SD stability monitor (SDSM). The SDSM has nine detectors with wavelengths from 0.41 to 0.94 \mu \textm . It is operated during each scheduled SD calibration event, making alternate observations of the sun and the SD. Due to erroneous design parameters, which led to the misalignment of the key elements in the SDSM, there are significant ripples in the sun view responses as the solar viewing angle changes. At the mission beginning, the effect of the ripples was eliminated by normalizing each SDSM detector response to the response of detector 9 (D9) at 0.94 \mu \textm , assuming that D9 had no degradation. However, D9 degradation increases over MODIS operation times. Degradation of up to 2% has recently been observed in D9 for the Terra MODIS. A newly implemented approach reduces the sun view ripples using a lookup table constructed using SDSM data carefully selected from a short period early in the mission lifetime. In this paper, we provide an overview of different approaches that have been applied over the years by the MODIS Characterization Support Team to track the on-orbit SD degradation. L-band brightness temperature (TB) has been shown to provide the best sensitivity to soil moisture (SM) although C- and X-band based products offer a longer time-series from satellite-based measurements. Currently, global coverage SM is routinely produced from spaceborne measurements using all three frequency bands, but despite continued validation efforts of the products, the relative characteristics and performance of these observations have not been fully established. Therefore, this study focused on the parametrization of SM retrieval algorithms at L-, C- and X-bands using TB observations from the L-band radiometer on NASA's SM Active Passive (SMAP) mission and the C- and X-band channels of JAXA's Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) onboard the GCOM-W satellite. These can be applied in global SM retrieval algorithms using either one of the frequencies or a combination of them. The reference in situ SM data was obtained from 12 core validation sites across various land cover types around the world. The investigation highlighted the known challenges of retrieving SM from C- and X-band data compared to the higher sensitivity of the L-band data. Even with a site-specific retrieval algorithm parameterization, the mean correlation of the C- and X-band retrievals for the core validation site SM measurement were much lower than that for L-band, being 0.52 (0.54) and 0.45 (0.47) for vertical (horizontal) polarization, respectively, while for the L-band retrieval the corresponding values were 0.81 (0.77). The parameterization exercise showed that matching the C- and X-band TB measurements with an emission model was not difficult; the problem was relating the observations to SM under the influence of large roughness and vegetation effects. As a result, parameter optimization produced values for some sites that were not realistic or did not allow any practical sensitivity to SM at C- and X-band. Considering the L-band observations, the parameter optimization resulted in superior bias performance as compared to the operational SMAP product parameterization, but the sensitivity to SM changes (R and unbiased root mean square difference) did not improve markedly, or in some cases degraded at the expense of a smaller bias. • Spaceborne radiometer observation at L/C/X-band over 12 soil moisture core sites. • Calibration of soil moisture retrieval algorithm for L/C/X-band using the core sites. • L-band retrieval achieves correlation of 0.8 while C/X-band achieves only 0.5. • Retrieval capability of C/X-band questionable over some of the sites. • Calibration of L-band improves bias and RMSD over SMAP product but not sensitivity. In this work, absolute calibration of the Chinese HY-2 satellite altimetry mission is carried out, employing Pass No. 280 and the calibration facility, CRS1, located in the Southwest end of the island of Crete, Greece. Satellite Pass No. 280 is descending and follows a ground track almost parallel to the west coast of Crete. It comes close to the coast, at a distance of about 9 km from the CRS1 calibration site, and finally goes away south of Crete. The HY-2 sensor geophysical data records (S-GDR) have been incorporated into the calibration procedures and processing has taken place for cycles No. 54–62, at 20 Hz data rate. Some peculiarities in the HY-2 satellite altimeter data, as delivered and depicted in the I-GDR and S-GDR data, have also been noticed. All calibration results have been determined using a regional, precise and detailed geoid, along with a good knowledge of local ocean circulation and site characteristics and a well-defined sea-surface calibration methodology. The first preliminary results for the HY-2 altimeter calibration have shown that the initial cycles, up to No. 51, display an erratic behavior. After those cycles, the altimeter range bias values seem to be stable and reach a value of B = −45.6 cm ± 4.4 cm, when applying the net instrument corrections as provided in the GDR. If the relativistic effects of the satellite clocks are properly applied for the net instrument corrections, then the altimeter range bias goes down to B = −27 cm ± 3 cm. Also, preliminary cross-over analysis with the SARAL/AliKa and Jason-2 satellites show a bias of B = −23 cm, and B = −28.5 cm, respectively. The performance of the HY-2 on-board radiometer has also been examined in terms of the wet troposphere corrections and shows a mean difference of −1 cm ± 0.1 cm with respect to in-situ GNSS-derived corrections. Finally, the ionosphere path corrections of the HY-2 satellite show a difference of +1 cm ± 1.1 cm, when compared against the GNSS-derived ionosphere values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A calibrated radiometer has been developed to enable the collection of accurate infrared measurements of sea surface temperature (SST) from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A key feature of this instrument is that in situ calibration is achieved with two built-in blackbodies (BBs). The instrument is designed so that the 2-D microbolometer array produces infrared images incremented as the aircraft travels, resulting in a well-calibrated strip of SST. Designed to be carried by medium-class UAVs, the Ball Experimental SST (BESST) instrument has been also successfully flown on manned aircraft. A recent intercalibration of BESST was carried out at the University of Miami using their National Institute of Standards and Technology traceable water-bath BB and a Fourier transform interferometer, the Marine-Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (M-AERI). The characterization of the BESST instrument with the Miami BB demonstrates the linearity and precision of the response of the microbolometer-based radiometer. Coincident measurements of SST from a nearby pier clearly demonstrated the excellent performance of the BESST instrument with a mean SST equal to that of the M-AERI and an RMS of 0.14 K very close to the microbolometer's advertised precision of 0.1 K. Cold calibration was not possible in Miami due to condensation, but a Ball BB was characterized relative to the Miami water-bath BB, and calibrations were made in Boulder at lower temperatures than were possible in Miami. We present a new high-fidelity method of calibrating a cross-track scanning microwave radiometer using Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (GPSRO) measurements. The radiometer and GPSRO receiver periodically observe the same volume of atmosphere near the Earth's limb, and these overlapping measurements are used to calibrate the radiometer. Performance analyses show that absolute calibration accuracy better than 0.25 K is achievable for temperature sounding channels in the 50-60-GHz band for a total-power radiometer using a weakly coupled noise diode for frequent calibration and proximal GPSRO measurements for infrequent (approximately daily) calibration. The method requires GPSRO penetration depth only down to the stratosphere, thus permitting the use of a relatively small GPS antenna. Furthermore, only coarse spacecraft angular knowledge (approximately one degree rms) is required for the technique, as more precise angular knowledge can be retrieved directly from the combined radiometer and GPSRO data, assuming that the radiometer angular sampling is uniform. These features make the technique particularly well suited for implementation on a low-cost CubeSat hosting both radiometer and GPSRO receiver systems on the same spacecraft. Tipping calibration is an important technique for the absolute calibration of ground-based microwave radiometers. The standard tipping calibration is usually used in clear atmosphere. The spatial variations of liquid water in cloudy atmosphere may lead to great calibration errors in the process of standard tipping calibration. A new method of tipping calibration for ground-based microwave radiometers is proposed, which uses an accurate channel to calibrate another inaccurate channel in cloudy atmosphere. The simulation and measurements show that the method proposed here can eliminate the radiation of cloud liquid water and calibrate the radiometer under cloudy-sky conditions effectively. A relative tipping calibration is also introduced to retrieve the parameters in cloudy atmosphere. It has been proven that the relative tipping calibration can reduce the retrieval error significantly in cloudy atmosphere even though neither of the two channels is accurate. The local oscillators (LOs) of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission payload are used to shift the operating frequency of the 72 receivers to an optimal intermediate frequency needed for the signal processing. The LO temperature variations produce phase errors in the visibility, which result in a blurring of the reconstructed brightness temperature (Tb) image. At the end of the commissioning phase, it was decided to calibrate the LO every 10 min while waiting for a more in-depth analysis. During short periods of time, the LO calibration has been performed every 2 min to assess the impact of a higher calibration rate on the quality of the data. In this paper, by means of a decimation experiment, the relative errors of 6- and 10-min calibration interval data sets are estimated using the 2 min as a reference. A noticeable systematic across- and along-track pattern of amplitude \pm0.3 K is observed for Tb differences between 10 and 2 min, whereas this is reduced between 6 and 2 min. A simulation experiment confirms that the nature of such systematic pattern is due to the visibility phase errors induced by the LO calibration rate. Such pattern is propagated into the sea surface salinity (SSS) retrievals. Overall, the SSS error increase (relative to the 2 min SSS data) is about 0.39 and 0.14 psu for the 10- and 6-min data sets, respectively. Working all day and all weather, a passive millimeter wave radiometer (PMMW) can be widely used in civil and military affairs. It can get some specific information about the material characteristics different from radar and infrared detectors. On basis of the radiometric operating range equation, the radiation cross section and stealth effect of metal objects are presented for the PMMW near-sensing application. The measurement experiments of metal solid models adopts 3 mm band Dicke radiometer with the outdoor calibration system. The sky temperature and other different surface metal objects are also measured as the contrastive experiments. The results show the radiometric temperature contrasts of solid models have remarkable difference in the bare and coated conditions, and the radiometric operating range can decrease to 60.8 %. Abstract: Three Along Track Scanning Radiometers (ATSRs) form a series of space-borne instruments specifically optimised to provide accurate remotely sensed measurements of Sea Surface Temperature (SST), which is a key geophysical parameter required to inform the debate on climate change and global warming. These sensors'' well-calibrated, high quality data have wide applicability and are being used in a much wider range of earth observation studies and applications, in addition to the planned SST mission. Each successive instrument has been an incremental improvement over its predecessor. Since early 1991 the ATSR sensors have provided global observations from the European Space Agency''s Earth Observation satellites; namely ATSR-1 on ERS-1 (European Remote-sensing Satellite), then ATSR-2 on ERS-2 and then AATSR (Advanced ATSR) on ENVISAT. The missions have been operated with good overlaps between successive sensors; AATSR is currently the operational instrument. The fundamental requirement for each ATSR instrument is a design that is capable of delivering absolutely calibrated infrared data; therefore this paper concentrates on how the sensors provide the calibrated radiometric observations required for the SST retrieval algorithms to work. It does not discuss the validation of the algorithms to produce SST derived from these basic observations. Described are the rigorous pre-launch measurements over a range of simulated flight environments which verify that this aim has been achieved, a calibration which exercises the same brightness temperature algorithm that is then used when calibrating in-flight measurements. Crucially, the ATSRs measure calibration source radiances in-flight without interrupting Earth-viewing which permits continuous gain and offset monitoring and calibration. For clarity where it is thought necessary for a data user''s better understanding of the calibration for flight data, some detail is provided concerning the differences between the three different ATSRs. Abstract: The knowledge of net radiation at the surface is of fundamental importance because it defines the total amount of energy available for the physical and biological processes such as evapotranspiration, air and soil warming. It is measured with net radiometers, but, the radiometers are expensive sensors, difficult to handle, that require constant care and also involve periodic calibration. This paper presents a methodology based on neural networks in order to replace the use of net radiometers (expensive tools) by modeling the relationships between the net radiation and meteorological variables measured in meteorological stations. Two different data sets (acquired at different locations) have been used in order to train and validate the developed artificial neural model. The statistical results (low root mean square errors and mean absolute error) show that the proposed methodology is suitable to estimate net radiation at surface from common meteorological variables, therefore, can be used as a substitute for net radiometers. We have proposed and discussed a method to calibrate the effective noise temperature (ENT) of a noise source by using an auxiliary transmission line (ATL). A cryogenic 7-mm coaxial noise source was developed for verifying the ATL method. The ENT is determined from the parameters evaluated by a radiometer and the available power ratio of the transmission line measured by a vector network analyzer. The calibrated ENT by this method was 139.8 K–143.6 K with an expanded uncertainty of 4.0 K–4.6 K (k = 2) in the frequency range of 8–12 GHz. We also performed a comparison of the ENT using two different methods: an ordinary radiometer measurement using two reference noise sources and a theoretical calculation method analyzing temperature and loss distribution along the transmission line. UAV (unmanned Aerial Vehicle) platforms represent a challenging opportunity for the deployment of a number of remote sensors. These vehicles are a cost-effective option in front of manned aerial vehicles (planes and helicopters), are easy to deploy due to the short runways needed, and they allow users to meet the critical requirements of the spatial and temporal resolutions imposed by the instruments. L-band radiometers are an interesting option for obtaining soil moisture maps over local areas with relatively high spatial resolution for precision agriculture, coastal monitoring, estimation of the risk of fires, flood prevention, etc. This paper presents the design of a light-weight, airborne L-band radiometer for deployment in a small UAV, including the hardware and specific software developed for calibration, geo-referencing, and soil moisture retrieval. Two semiconductor active cold loads (ACLs) to be used as cold references in spaceborne microwave radiometers have been developed. An X-band frequency was chosen, and the target noise temperature value was in the 50-100-K range. The ACLs are characterized in the operating temperature range of 0 °C-50 °C and long-term stability is assessed. To this end, a test bed has been developed. This test bed is actually a stable radiometer, and its design and performance are discussed. The test setup is described, and test campaign results indicate output temperatures of 77 and 56 K for the two ACLs. The temperature sensitivity is slightly below 0.4 K/°C for the units, and long-term stability within 2 K/year is observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The NASA's Earth Observing System Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) has continued to operate with satisfactory performance since its launch in May 2002, exceeding its nominal six-year design lifetime. Its continuous Earth observations have been used to generate many science data products for studies of the Earth's system. MODIS has 36 spectral bands: 20 reflective solar bands and 16 thermal emissive bands (TEBs). All TEB observations are made at 1-km nadir spatial resolution with spectral wavelengths from 3.7 to 14.4 μm. Primary applications of MODIS TEB include surface, cloud, and atmospheric temperatures, water vapor, and cloud top altitude. MODIS TEB on-orbit calibration uses a quadratic algorithm with its calibration coefficients derived using an on- board blackbody (BB). This paper will present Aqua MODIS TEB on-orbit calibration, characterization, and performance over its six-year mission. Examples of instrument thermal behavior, RB temperature stability, detector short-term stability, and changes in long-term response (or system gain) will be presented. Comparisons will also be made with Terra MODIS, launched in December 1999. On-orbit results show that Aqua MODIS and its focal plane temperatures have behaved normally. BB temperature has remained extremely stable with typical scan-to-scan variations of less than ±0.15 mK. Most TEB detectors continue to exceed their specified signal-to-noise ratio requirements, exhibiting excellent short-term stability and calibration accuracy. Excluding a few noisy detectors, either identified prelaunch or occurring postlaunch, on-orbit changes in TEB responses have been less than 0.5% on an annual basis. Since its launch in December 1999, Terra MODIS has been making continuous Earth observations for more than seven years. It has produced a broad range of land, ocean, and atmospheric science data products for improvements in studies of global climate and environmental change. Among its 36 spectral bands, there are 20 reflective solar bands and 16 thermal emissive bands (TEBs). MODIS TEBs cover the mid-wave infrared and long-wave infrared spectral regions with wavelengths from 3.7 to 14.4 μm. They are calibrated on-orbit using an onboard black- body (BB) with its temperature measured by a set of thermistors on a scan-by-scan basis. This paper will provide a brief overview of MODIS TEB calibration and characterization methodologies and illustrate onboard BB functions and TEB performance over more than seven years of on-orbit operation and calibration. Discussions will be focused on TEB detector short-term stability and noise characterization and changes in long-term response (or system gain). Results show that Terra MODIS BB operation has been extremely stable since launch. When operated at its nominal controlled temperature of 290 K, the BB temperature variation is typically less than ±0.30 mK on a scan-by-scan basis, and there has been no time-dependent temperature drift. In addition to excellent short-term stability, most TEB detectors continue to meet or exceed their specified noise characterization requirements, thus enabling calibration accuracy and science data product quality to be maintained. Excluding the noisy detectors identified prelaunch and those that occurred postlaunch, the changes in TEB responses have been less than 0.7% on an annual basis. Ten underflights of the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) with Conical Scanning Millimeter-wave Imaging Radiometer (CoSMIR) onboard the NASA ER-2 aircraft were conducted over the coastal region of California between March 2004 and March 2005. The measured brightness temperature (Tb) values from both sensors are collocated and compared at frequencies of 50.3, 52.8, 53.6, 91.655, 150, 183.3 ± 1,183.3 ± 3, and 183.3 ± 6.6 GHz. The more transparent channels at 50.3, 91.655, and 150 GHz are strongly affected by the changes in surface emission and low-level liquid clouds. Thus, the average differences in Tb values (δTb), measured by the two sensors, and their changes from flight to flight are difficult to assess. For the remaining opaque channels, using the CoSMIR measurements as reference, the lowest SSMIS Tb values occur when the SSMIS is completely under the Earth's shadow. As the satellite moves out of the Earth's shadow in the ascending passes, the SSMIS Tb values are found to gradually increase with more exposure to the sun. Analyses and results of the radiometric calibration accuracy and measurement characteristics of the first Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)'s Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) upper atmosphere sounding (UAS) channels are presented herein. Launched on October 18, 2003, aboard the DMSP F-16 spacecraft in a sun-synchronous orbit, the SSMIS UAS channels provide the first operational measurements of microwave radiation emitted by the Earth's atmosphere at mesospheric altitudes. The analysis of the SSMIS radiometer absolute calibration and stability is based upon extensive comparisons with a fully polarimetric radiative transfer model (RTM) that solves for all four Stokes parameters using coincident atmospheric temperature profiles derived from collocated Rayleigh lidar observations merged with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting temperature analyses and climatological data sets. The resulting merged profiles provide a physically consistent temperature profile from the surface to 100 km, as needed by the RTMs. The results presented herein of the SSMIS instrument show that significant hardware and scientific technical challenges arise from microwave temperature sounding of the mesosphere. These include the following: 1) addressing the impact of large noise-equivalent temperature difference associated with narrow channel bandwidths; 2) achieving high channel center-frequency stability; 3) compensation of large spacecraft-induced Doppler shift; 4) better characterization of the Zeeman splitting of the oxygen absorption lines; 5) development of a fast polarimetric RTM; and 6) designing stable and accurate on-orbit radiometric calibration targets. Results to date show that the uncertainties of the calibration accuracy of the SSMIS UAS channels are consistent and in agreement with the limits derived for the SSMIS UAS channels and with the simulated radiances derived from the merged lidar profiles. Interferometric radiometry is a novel concept in remote sensing that is also presenting particular challenges for calibration methods. In this paper, we describe the calibration subsystem (CAS) developed for the Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) interferometer of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite. CAS is important for the overall performance of the payload as it calibrates out the differences between the multiple receivers of MIRAS. This paper reviews the relative calibration of an interferometric radiometer taking into account the experimental results of the first batch of receivers developed in the frame of the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission. Measurements show state-of-the-art baseline performance as long as the system is capable of correcting the effect of orbital temperature swing. A method to validate internal calibration during in-orbit deep-sky views and to correct linearity errors is also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The WindSat microwave polarimetric radiometer consists of 22 channels of polarized brightness temperatures operating at five frequencies: 6.8, 10.7, 18.7, 23.8, and 37.0 GHz. The 10.7-, 18.7-, and 37.0-GHz channels are fully polarimetric (vertical/horizontal, ±45° and left-hand and right-hand circularly polarized) to measure the four Stokes radiometric parameters. The principal objective of this Naval Research Laboratory experiment, which flies on the USAF Coriolis satellite, is to provide the proof of concept of the first passive measurement of ocean surface wind vector from space. This paper presents details of the on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration procedure, which was performed during of a series of satellite pitch maneuvers. During these special tests, the satellite pitch was slowly ramped to +45° (and -45°), which caused the WindSat conical spinning antenna to view deep space during the forward (or aft portion) of the azimuth scan. When viewing the homogeneous and isotropic brightness of space (2.73 K) through both the main reflector and the cold-load calibration reflector, it is possible to determine the absolute calibration of the individual channels and the relative calibration bias between polarimetric channels. Results demonstrate consistent and stable channel calibrations (with very small brightness biases) that exceed the mission radiometric calibration requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a built-in calibration procedure of a 10-to-20 GHz polarimeter aimed at measuring the I, Q, U Stokes parameters of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. A full-band square waveguide double directional coupler, mounted in the antenna-feed system, is used to inject differently polarized reference waves. A brief description of the polarimetric microwave radiometer and the system calibration injector is also reported. A fully polarimetric calibration is also possible using the designed double directional coupler, although the presented calibration method in this paper is proposed to obtain three of the four Stokes parameters with the introduced microwave receiver, since V parameter is expected to be zero for the CMB radiation. Providing uncertainties in satellite datasets used for Earth observation can be a daunting prospect because of the many processing stages and input data required to convert raw detector counts to calibrated radiances. The Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) was designed to provide measurements of the Earth's surface for operational and climate applications. In this paper the authors describe the traceability chain and derivation of uncertainty estimates for the thermal infrared channel radiometry. Starting from the instrument model, the contributing input quantities are identified to build up an uncertainty effects tree. The characterisation of each input effect is described, and uncertainty estimates provided which are used to derive the combined uncertainties as a function of scene temperature. The SLSTR Level-1 data products provide uncertainty estimates for fully random effects (noise) and systematic effects that can be mapped for each image pixel, examples of which are shown.
