Several studies have outlined that changes in the honeybee gut microbial composition may impair important metabolic functions supporting the honeybees' life. Gut dysbiosis may be caused by diseases like Nosema ceranae or by other anthropic, environmental or experimental stressors. The present work contributes to increasing knowledge on the dynamics of the gut microbiome acquisition in caged honeybees, an experimental condition frequently adopted by researchers, with or without infection with N. ceranae, and fed with a bacterial mixture to control N. ceranae development. Changes of the gut microbiota were elucidated comparing microbial profile of caged and open-field reared honeybees. The absolute abundance of the major gut microbial taxa was studied with both NGS and qPCR approaches, whereas changes in the functionality were based on RAST annotations and manually curated. In general, all caged honeybees showed important changes in the gut microbiota, with γ -proteobacteria (Frischella, Gilliamella and Snodgrassella) lacking in all caged experimental groups. Caged honeybees infected with N. ceranae showed also a strong colonization of environmental taxa like Citrobacter, Cosenzaea and Morganella, as well as possibly pathogenic bacteria such as Serratia. The colonization of Serratia did not occur in presence of the bacterial mixture. The functionality prediction revealed that environmental bacteria or the supplemented bacterial mixture increased the metabolic potential of the honeybee gut microbiome compared to field and caged controls. Pollen collected by pollinators can be used as a marker of the foraging behavior as well as indicate the botanical species present in each environment. Pollen intake is essential for pollinators' health and survival. During the foraging activity, some pollinators, such as honeybees, manipulate the collected pollen mixing it with salivary secretions and nectar (corbicular pollen) changing the pollen chemical profile. Different tools have been developed for the identification of the botanical origin of pollen, based on microscopy, spectrometry, or molecular markers. However, up to date, corbicular pollen has never been investigated. In our work, corbicular pollen from 5 regions with different climate conditions was collected during spring. Pollens were identified with microscopy-based techniques, and then analyzed in MALDI-MS. Four different chemical extraction solutions and two physical disruption methods were tested to achieve a MALDI-MS effective protocol. The best performance was obtained using a sonication disruption method after extraction with acetic acid or trifluoroacetic acid. Therefore, we propose a new rapid and reliable methodology for the identification of the botanical origin of the corbicular pollens using MALDI-MS. Background: A connection between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and altered gut microbiota composition has previously been reported in animal models. This work is the first prospective longitudinal study addressing the microbiota composition in ALS patients and the impact of a probiotic supplementation on the gut microbiota and disease progression.Methods: Fifty patients and 50 matched controls were enrolled. The microbial profile of stool samples from patients and controls was analyzed via PCR-Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis, and the main microbial groups quantified via qPCR. The whole microbiota was then analyzed via next generation sequencing after amplification of the V3-V4 region of 16S rDNA. Patients were then randomized to receive probiotic treatment or placebo and followed up for 6 months with ALSFRS-R, BMI, and FVC%.Results: The results demonstrate that the gut microbiota of ALS patients is characterized by some differences with respect to controls, regardless of the disability degree. Moreover, the gut microbiota composition changes during the course of the disease as demonstrated by the significant decrease in the number of observed operational taxonomic unit during the follow-up. Interestingly, an unbalance between potentially protective microbial groups, such as Bacteroidetes, and other with potential neurotoxic or pro-inflammatory activity, such as Cyanobacteria, has been shown. The 6-month probiotic treatment influenced the gut microbial composition; however, it did not bring the biodiversity of intestinal microbiota of patients closer to that of control subjects and no influence on the progression of the disease measured by ALSFRS-R was demonstrated.Conclusions: Our study poses the bases for larger clinical studies to characterize the microbiota changes as a novel ALS biomarker and to test new microbial strategy to ameliorate the health status of the gut.Trial Registration: CE 107/14, approved by the Ethics Committee of the "Maggiore della Carità" University Hospital, Italy. In meat fermented foods, Clostridium spp. growth is kept under control by the addition of nitrite. The growing request of consumers for safer products has led to consider alternative bio-based approaches, the use of protective cultures being one of them. This work is aimed at checking the possibility of using two Lactobacillus spp. strains as protective cultures against Clostridium spp. in pork ground meat for fermented salami preparation. Both Lactobacillus strains displayed anti-clostridia activity in vitro using the spot agar test and after co-culturing them in liquid medium with each Clostridium strain. Only one of them, however, namely L . plantarum PCS20, was capable of effectively surviving in ground meat and of performing anti-microbial activity in carnis in a challenge test where meat was inoculated with the Clostridium strain. New antimicrobial (AM) coatings based on imidazolium salts have been prepared linking the imidazolium salts to the cotton fabric using siloxane oligomers as coupling agents. Three different imidazolium salts, linked to the siloxane oligomers connected to the cotton fabric either with ionic or covalent linkages, have been used. FTIR analysis shows that the imidazolium salts are linked to the cotton fabric. All the coatings prepared have high antimicrobial activity at both concentrations tested (3 and 10 wt%) and against a Gram positive and a Gram negative bacterium. This review is aimed at describing the most recent advances in the gut microbiota composition of newborns and infants with a particular emphasis on bifidobacteria. The newborn gut microbiota is quite unstable, whereas after weaning, it becomes more stable and gets closer to the typical adult microbiota. The newborn and infant gut microbiota composition is impaired in several enteric and non-enteric pathologies. The core of this review is the description of the most recent documented applications of bifidobacteria to newborns and infants for their prevention and treatment. Acute diarrhea is the most studied disease for which bifidobacteria are applied with great success, Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium breve being the most applied species. Moreover, the most recent updates in the use of bifidobacteria for the prevention and treatment of pathologies typical of newborns, such as necrotizing enterocolitis, colics, and streptococcal infections, are presented. In addition, a number of not strictly enteric pathologies have in recent years evidenced a strict correlation with an aberrant gut microbiota in infants, in particular showing a reduced level of bifidobacteria. These diseases represent new potential opportunities for probiotic applications. Among them, allergic diseases, celiac disease, obesity, and neurologic diseases are described in this review. The preliminary use of bifidobacteria in in vitro systems and animal models is summarized as well as preliminary in vivo studies. Abstract: Vanillin is one of the most important flavors in the food industry and there is great interest in its production through biotechnological processes starting from natural substrates such as ferulic acid. Among bacteria, recombinant Escherichia coli strains are the most efficient vanillin producers, whereas Pseudomonas spp. strains, although possessing a broader metabolic versatility, rapidly metabolize various phenolic compounds including vanillin. In order to develop a robust Pseudomonas strain that can produce vanillin in high yields and at high productivity, the vanillin dehydrogenase (vdh)-encoding gene of Pseudomonas fluorescens BF13 strain was inactivated via targeted mutagenesis. The results demonstrated that engineered derivatives of strain BF13 accumulate vanillin if inactivation of vdh is associated with concurrent expression of structural genes for feruloyl-CoA synthetase (fcs) and hydratase/aldolase (ech) from a low-copy plasmid. The conversion of ferulic acid to vanillin was enhanced by optimization of growth conditions, growth phase and parameters of the bioconversion process. The developed strain produced up to 8.41mM vanillin, which is the highest final titer of vanillin produced by a Pseudomonas strain to date and opens new perspectives in the use of bacterial biocatalysts for biotechnological production of vanillin from agro-industrial wastes which contain ferulic acid. Abstract: An aerobic bacterial consortium (Consortium A) was recently obtained from textile wastewater and was capable of degrading 4-nonylphenol and nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPnEOs). In the perspective of developing a biotechnological process for the treatment of effluents from activated sludge plants fed with NPnEO contaminated wastewater, the capability of Consortium A of biodegrading an industrial mixture of NPnEOs in the physiological condition of immobilized cells was investigated. Two identically configured packed bed reactors were developed by immobilizing the consortium on silica beads or granular activated carbon. Both reactors were tested in batch and continuous mode by feeding them with water supplemented with NPnEOs. The two reactors were monitored through chemical, microbiological and molecular integrated methodology. Active biofilms were generated on both immobilization supports. Both reactors displayed comparable NPnEO mineralization under batch and continuous conditions. FISH analyses evidenced that the biofilms evolved with time by changing the reactor operation mode and the organic load. Taken together, the data collected in this study provide a preliminary strong indication on the feasibility of Consortium A-based biofilm technology for the decontamination of NPnEO containing effluents. 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP) isomers are toxic and recalcitrant compounds often resulting, together with short-chain ethoxylated nonylphenol (NP nEO, where n is the number of ethylene oxide units), from NP nEO biodegradation in conventional activated sludge plants. In this work, a microbial consortium, defined as Consortium A, capable of removing 100 mg/L of 4-NP with no accumulation of metabolites with aromatic moiety was isolated from textile wastewaters after enrichment with 4-NP. The consortium showed remarkable degradation activities toward several short-chain NP nEO congeners. Culture-dependent techniques were used to isolate from the consortium twenty-six strains assigned to seven different amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis groups. Two- and three-member cocultures were prepared with the strains showing highest 4-NP-degrading capabilities, but neither the single strains nor the cocultures were as efficient in 4-NP degradation as Consortium A. FISH was used to characterize the microbial composition of Consortium A: it evidenced a strong occurrence of Proteobacteria and, in particular, of Gammaproteobacteria along with a relevant stability of the culture. Therefore, the isolated consortium has the potential of being used in the development of a biotechnological process for the tertiary treatment of effluents of activated sludge plants fed with NP nEO-contaminated wastewaters. Abstract: The fine specialty chemicals production from agro-industrial by-products such as cereal bran is a topic of high interest in wheat-producing countries. In this work, the possibility of obtaining vanillin from bioconversion of ferulic acid derived from enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat bran was explored. Freely available ferulic acid was first obtained through wheat bran hydrolysis by using commercially available, technical-grade enzyme preparations. Then, resting cells of an engineered E. coli strain, JM109(pBB1), containing the genes responsible for conversion of ferulic acid into vanillin, were used to transform ferulic acid available in the hydrolyzed mixture into vanillin. A vanillin molar yield of 50% was obtained, but most of the vanillin produced was reduced to vanillyl alcohol. The purification of the hydrolyzate with a ionic exchange resin to remove most of the carbohydrates allowed to obtain both higher bioconversion yields (up to 70%) and lower vanillin reduction. This is the first work in which vanillin is produced from ferulic acid obtained through wheat bran hydrolysis. An aerobic bacterium (BCc6), isolated from nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEOs)-contaminated sludge, was shown to be capable of degrading low-ethoxylated NPEO mixtures. Sequencing of 16S rRNA gene (rDNA) showed that it clustered with Stenotrophomonas nitritireducens. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), performed on BCc6 strain and on the previously isolated Stenotrophomonas BCaL2, also involved in NPEO degradation but clustering with S. maltophilia, showed that strain BCc6 did not hybridize with the S. maltophilia-specific probe, and neither of the two strains hybridized with probes targeted to the Gammaproteobacteria site, rDNA analyses performed on the two strains evidenced two new polymorphisms, the first one at the 23S rRNA Gammaproteobacteria site, characterizing the known members of the Stenotrophomonas genus, and the other one at the 16S rRNA level, characteristic of S. nitritireducens. Three bacterial strains were isolated from activated sludge samples of two treatment plants receiving domestic and industrial wastewaters containing polyethoxylated nonylphenols. One strain (VA160) was isolated on rich medium, and the other two (BCaL1 and BCaL2) on mineral medium containing two industrial mixtures of nonylphenol ethoxylates as the sole carbon source. Strain VA160 was a Gram-positive, spore forming, filamentous bacterium, producing aggregates during growth in liquid medium. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis the strains were assigned to the Bacillus (VA160), Acinetobacter (BCaL1) and Stenothrophomonas (BCaL2) genera. High performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that only the Acinetobacter and Stenothrophomonas strains were involved in the degradation of polyethoxylated nonylphenols. Bacillus VA160, however, when co-cultured with the two degrading strains, induced the formation of cell aggregates and facilitated NPEO degradation. Fluorescent in situ hybridisation on the activated sludge sample from which Bacillus VA160 was isolated, using probes for Gram-positive bacteria with low G+C content, showed that bacteria belonging to this group specifically occurred inside the examined flocs. These observations suggest that the enhanced biodegradation of polyethoxylated nonylphenols in the three-membered co-culture is favoured by VA160-induced aggregation of BcaL1 and BcaL2 cells involved in the process. South America is populated by a wide range of bumble bee species that represent an important source of biodiversity, supporting pollination services in natural and agricultural ecosystems. These pollinators provide unique specific microbial niches, populated by a wide number of microorganisms such as symbionts, environmental opportunistic bacteria, and pathogens. Recently, it was demonstrated how microbial populations are shaped by trophic resources and environmental conditions but also by anthropogenic pressure, which strongly affects microbes' functionality. This study is focused on the impact of different land uses (natural reserve, agroecosystem, and suburban) on the gut microbiome composition of two South American bumble bees, Bombus pauloensis and Bombus bellicosus. Gut microbial DNA extracted from collected bumble bees was sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq platform and correlated with land use. Nosema ceranae load was analyzed with qPCR and correlated with microbiome data. Significant differences in gut microbiome composition between the two wild bumble bee species were highlighted, with notable variations in α- and β-diversity across study sites. Bombus bellicosus showed a high abundance of Pseudomonas, a genus that includes environmental saprobes, and was found to be the second major taxa populating the gut microbiome, probably indicating the vulnerability of this host to environmental pollution. Pathogen analysis unveils a high prevalence of N. ceranae, with B. bellicosus showing higher susceptibility. Finally, Gilliamella exhibited a negative correlation with N. ceranae, suggesting a potential protective role of this commensal taxon. Our findings underscore the importance of considering microbial dynamics in pollinator conservation strategies, highlighting potential interactions between gut bacteria and pathogens in shaping bumble bee health. The development of eco-friendly polymer composites with multifunctional properties aligns with the goals of the circular economy agenda, which aims to minimize waste and promote the sustainable use of resources by closing the loop of product life cycles. Eco-friendly polymer composites play a crucial role in achieving these objectives. The present work focuses on the preparation of fully biobased blends obtained by melt mixing a bio-polyester, poly(butylene succinate- co -adipate) (PBSA), with orange peels up to 20 wt%, to yield active polymer composites. Orange peels, employed here as natural filler, are largely available from food wastes, they are rich in phenolic compounds and possess antioxidant activity as shown by the experimental tests carried out. The thermal stability of the formulated composites is almost unchanged by the filler addition, showing only a slight decrease of the crystallization temperatures and crystalline fraction within the composites. The mechanical properties of the compounds evidence an increase in the elastic modulus together with a decrease in the tensile strength, while the elongation at break remains almost constant. The incorporation of the natural filler enabled the integration of antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which were absent in the original pristine polymer. • PBSA containing up to 20 wt% of orange peels have good antioxidant and antibacterial properties. • Biocomposites formulated with orange peels are found to retain good mechanical properties in terms of elongation at break. • The thermoplastic material produced can be used in the packaging industry or in the organic or integrated farming sector application. The communities of microorganisms and their genomes in a defined environment are collectively referred to as microbiomes (Marchesi and Ravel, 2015). They include representatives from the Bacteria, Archaea, lower and higher Eukarya, and viruses, and are found in most environments such as soils, aquatic habitats, surfaces and specific lumen of plants, animals and humans. According to ongoing studies, microbiome structures and dynamics across the food system can have both direct and indirect effects on human and animal health, in addition to their impact on food quality, safety and sustainability (CNBBSV concept paper, 2019). Moreover, recent research projects have offered new insights into the associations between microbiomes and a wide range of human diseases as well as their possible impact in modulating the exposure to environmental chemicals. As one of the core tasks of EFSA is to assess risks to human and animal health and/or the environment from substances linked to food and feed production, the increasing understanding of the role of microbiomes in health calls for a prospective mapping of their roles into regulatory scientific assessment processes with a view to understanding their potential health impact. Abstract In the present work, a combined hurdle approach for fermented meat preservation was investigated. Challenge tests were performed in Chorizo sausage model using the maximum allowed NaNO 2 amount (150 mg/kg), a reduced amount (75 mg/kg) and no nitrite, with and without protective cultures inoculation. Cocktail strains of L. monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. were used as indicator strains. In a nitrite reduced sausage model, L. monocytogenes growing trend did not significantly change (p > 0.05) when compared with that containing higher nitrite concentration (150 mg/kg NaNO 2). The addition of L. plantarum PSC20 significantly lowered L. monocytogenes growth when compared with control batches without PCS20 (p < 0.05), obtaining 3.84 log cfu/g and 2.62 log cfu/g lower counts in the batches with 150 mg/kg NaNO 2 and 75 mg/kg NaNO 2 respectively. None of the protective cultures demonstrated in situ antagonistic activity against Salmonella spp. This work pointed out that the reduction of nitrites with the combined use of a protective culture could be a feasible approach to control L. monocytogenes growth in fermented meat foods. Pollinators, including solitary bees, are drastically declining worldwide. Among the factors contributing to this decline, bee pathogens and different land uses are of relevance. The link between the gut microbiome composition and host health has been recently studied for social pollinators (e.g. honeybees), whereas the information related to solitary bees is sparse. This work aimed at the characterization of the gut microbiome of the solitary bees Xylocopa augusti, Eucera fervens and Lasioglossum and attempted to correlate the gut microbial composition with the presence and load of different pathogens and land uses. Solitary bees were sampled in different sites (i.e. a farm, a natural reserve, and an urban plant nursery) showing different land uses. DNA was extracted from the gut, 16S rRNA gene amplified and sequenced. Eight pathogens, known for spillover from managed bees to wild ones, were quantified with qPCR. The results showed that the core microbiome profile of the three solitary bees significantly varied in the different species. Pseudomonas was found as the major core taxa in all solitary bees analyzed, whereas Lactobacillus, Spiroplasma and Sodalis were the second most abundant taxa in X. augusti, E. fervens and Lasioglossum, respectively. The main pathogens detected with qPCR were Nosema ceranae, Nosema bombi and Crithidia bombi, although differently abundant in the different bee species and sampling sites. Most microbial taxa did not show any correlation with the land use, apart from Snodgrassella and Nocardioides, showing higher abundances on less anthropized sites. Conversely, the pathogens species and load strongly affected the gut microbial composition, with Bifidobacterium, Apibacter, Serratia, Snodgrassella and Sodalis abundance that positively or negatively correlated with the detected pathogens load. In order to meet the increasing demand for food quality and safety, the control of pathogenic microorganisms from “farm to fork” is a continuous challenge. This challenge has become more important due to changes in animal production, product processing and distribution, new food habits, higher numbers of consumers at risk for infection and increased awareness. This review is focused on the use of protective and probiotic cultures as “natural” intervention measures to control and prevent the transmission of pathogens along the food chain and on the most used technologies to produce these cultures at the large scale. Intensive conventional farm management, characterized by high agrochemicals input, could alter the composition of microbial communities with potential negative effects on both functional traits and the ecosystem services provided. In this study, we investigated the gut microbial composition of a high ecological relevance carabid Pseudoophonus rufipes, sampled in two fields subjected to conventional and organic management practices. Carabids' gut microbiota was analyzed via qPCR and NGS. Profound differences between the microbial composition of organic and conventional samples were detected: the abundance of Tenericutes and Proteobacteria was significant higher in organic and conventional samples, respectively. Spiroplasmataceae and Bifidobacteriaceae families were significantly more abundant in samples from organic management, while Enterococcaceae, Morganellaceae and Yersiniaceae were more abundant in samples from conventional management. The diverse gut microbial composition of insects between the two management systems is related to the pressure of environmental stressors and it may representing an important bioindication of ecological functions and services provided by a carabid species. Chitosan chemical functionalization is a powerful tool to provide novel materials for additive manufacturing strategies. The main aim of this study was the employment of computer-aided wet spinning (CAWS) for the first time to design and fabricate carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) scaffolds. For this purpose, the synthesis of a chitosan derivative with a high degree of O-substitution (1.07) and water soluble in a large pH range allowed the fabrication of scaffolds with a 3D interconnected porous structure. In particular, the developed scaffolds were composed of CMCS fibers with a small diameter (< 60 μm) and a hollow structure due to a fast non solvent-induced coagulation. Zn2+ ionotropic crosslinking endowed the CMCS scaffolds with stability in aqueous solutions, pH-sensitive water uptake capability, and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, post-printing functionalization through collagen grafting resulted in a decreased stiffness (1.6 ± 0.3 kPa) and a higher elongation at break (101 ± 9 %) of CMCS scaffolds, as well as in their improved ability to support in vitro fibroblast viability and wound healing process. Particulate composites based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) biopolymers have been formulated. Silver skin (SSK), the by‐product derived from the roasting of coffee beans, has been milled to micrometric size and added up to a 30 wt% of loading, without any previous treatment. The dynamic mechanical properties of the composites have been investigated, as well as the stability toward UV and IR radiation. The filler improves some mechanical properties such as the elastic modulus (E′) mostly in PBS. Photoaging experiments demonstrate that SSK, due to its polyphenols content and antioxidant activity, is able to protect both PLA and PBS from UV degradation, highlighting an added value of SSK waste‐based composites. Turfgrasses are not only designed for recreation activities, but they also provide beneficial environmental effects and positively influence the human wellness. Their major problems are predisposition to tearing out and microbial diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the inoculation of microorganisms can be effective to improve plant growth and root development of perennial ryegrass, to evaluate new sustainable practice for green preservation. A microorganism-based commercial product was used to amend hydroponically grown Lolium perenne L. and results compared with the use of the same filtered product, a phytohormone solution and an untreated control. Plants were grown for five weeks, shoots cut and measured at one-week interval and, at the end, roots were measured for length and weight. Shoot resistance to tearing out was also tested. Moreover, the main microbial groups present in the product were characterized and the microbial profile of sand and root samples was investigated by PCR-DGGE. The plants treated with the product showed an increased resistance to tearing out with respect to other treatments and roots were longer with respect to the control. Microbial analyses of the product evidenced bacterial and yeast species with plant growth promoting activity, such as Stenothrophomonas maltophilia, Candida utilis and several Lactobacillus species. Abstract: With the ban of dietary antimicrobial agents, the use of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics has attracted a great deal of attention in order to improve intestinal health and control food-borne pathogens, which is an important concern for the production of safe meat and meat products. Recently, Campylobacter jejuni has emerged as a leading bacterial cause of food-borne gastroenteritis in humans, and epidemiological evidences indicate poultry and poultry products as the main source of human infection. This work aimed at the development of a synbiotic mixture capable of modulating the gut microbiota of broiler chickens to obtain an increase of the beneficial bacteria (i.e. bifidobacteria, lactobacilli) and a competitive reduction of C. jejuni. The prebiotic compound used in the mixture was chosen after an in vivo trial: a fructooligosaccharide and a galactooligosaccharide were separately administered to broilers mixed with normal feed at a concentration of 0.5% and 3%, respectively. Quantitative PCR on DNA extracted from fecal samples revealed a significant (p<0.05) increase of Bifidobacterium spp. in broilers treated with the galactooligosaccharide, coupled to a decrease (p<0.05) of Campylobacter spp. The galactooligosaccharide was then combined with a probiotic Bifidobacterium strain (B. longum subsp. longum PCB133), possessing in vitro antimicrobial activity against C. jejuni. The strain was microencapsulated in a lipid matrix to ensure viability into the feed and resistance to stomach transit. Finally, the synbiotic mixture was administered to broiler chickens for 14days mixed with normal feed in order to have an intake of 109 CFU of PCB133/day. Bifidobacterium spp., Lactobacillus spp., Campylobacter spp., B. longum subsp. longum and C. jejuni were quantified in fecal samples. PCB133 was recovered in feces of all animals. C. jejuni concentration in poultry feces was significantly (p<0.05) reduced in chickens administered with the synbiotic mixture. This study allowed to highlight the positive effect of the synbiotic approach for C. jejuni reduction in broiler chickens, which is of fundamental importance for the safety of poultry meat consumers. The conversion of rainforests to plantations leads to about 50% loss in the organic carbon (C) content of the soil and strongly influences nitrogen (N) cycling, potentially increasing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the effect of land-use change in forests on the microbial communities responsible for C and N cycling processes remains poorly understood. This study quantified C and N fractions of soil organic matter in a tropical forest, rubber agroforestry system, 5- and 15-year-old rubber plantations. The community structure and abundance of fungi and bacteria were studied using high-throughput sequencing and q-PCR. Forest conversion substantially altered community structure and abundance of microbial communities. Rainforest conversion to plantation enhanced bacterial diversity and reduced the soil C mineralization rate. In addition, land-use change also enhanced the soil N mineralization rate in 5-year-old rubber plantation and agroforestry system. A structural equation modelling suggested that soil microbial communities played more dominant roles in driving the shift in C and N cycles caused by land-use change than soil C and N pools. Background and aims: As potent allelochemicals, flavonoids are believed to be associated with the development of soil-borne diseases. Fusarium species infection is responsible for soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.] root rot. However, it is uncertain if and how flavonoids influence rhizosphere Fusarium communities under consecutive soybean monoculture. Methods: Quantitative real-time PCR and pyrosequencing were used to study the Fusarium community. Spectrophotometric techniques and ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) were used to quantify flavonoids and daidzein and genistein levels, respectively. Results: In field soil, the sizes of Fusarium community were higher from 6 to 13 years monoculture than from 1 to 3 years. The abundance of Fusarium community was significantly positively correlated with rhizosphere concentrations of the flavonoids and isoflavonoids daidzein and genistein levels. Consecutive monocultured soil selectively inhibited or stimulated certain Fusarium species, F. oxysporum remaining the most abundant. The application of daidzein and a mixture of daidzein and genistein to soil affected the Fusarium community depending on the incubation time and ranging from inhibition to promotion over time. Conclusions: Consecutive soybean monoculture results in shifts in the composition and size of rhizosphere Fusarium community. Irrigation with wastewater can be a solution to preserve and mitigate freshwater demand, in particular during drought periods. Unfortunately, wastewater, although being treated at different levels, could be a carrier of human pathogens (e.g., E. coli) and potentially contaminate crops for human consumptions. This study investigated the seasonal microbiological concentrations, on soil, shoot and fruit tissues of potted peach trees, following two irrigation treatments: freshwater (FW) and secondary urban wastewater without the final disinfection treatment (SW). E. coli was only detected in SW irrigated soil, whereas total coliforms (TC) and total bacteria counts (TBC) were similar in both treatments throughout the season. Endophytic E. coli, Salmonella spp. and TC were not detected in shoot and fruit, but a higher presence of total bacteria (TBC) was observed in SW-irrigated tree compared to FW-irrigated tree. In particular, SW shoots had a higher load compared to fruits, thus showing a potential effect of leaf transpiration, that promoted the transfer of water-borne bacteria from soil to the epigeal part (shoot). The adoption of low-quality SW (even above the microbiological limits of the European Regulation 2020/741 for wastewater re-use in agriculture), when a drip irrigation method is applied, could be a valid alternative to save fresh water without compromising fruit safety. Nanocomposites based on poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and hydrotalcite-type anionic clays (HTs) organo-modified with biomolecules characterized by antibacterial and/or antioxidant activities, such as l-ascorbic acid (ASA), phloretic acid (HPP), l-tyrosine (TYR) and l-tryptophan (TRP), have been prepared by in situ polymerization. From XRD analysis and rheology experiments in a molten polymer state, intercalated HT hybrid platelets acting here as a hybrid filler are found to be well dispersed into polymers while providing a chain extension effect on PBS. Moreover, the molecules, when hosted within a HT interlayer gap, do preserve their pristine antibacterial activity, both in HT and in the resulting PBS composites. In particular, under the experimental conditions tested, HT/ASA and HT/TYR present the best combination of both properties (chain extension effect and antibacterial), especially versus E. coli as high as 90 and 97% of inhibition, respectively, using 2.5 wt% hybrid filler only. The main crude polysaccharides (CPS), extracted from two widely cultivated pomegranate varieties, Laffan and Wonderful, were studied and characterized. We obtained the highest CPS extraction yield (approximatively 10% w/w on dried matter) by 1 h of decoction (ratio 1/40 w/v). The predominant polymers (75–80%) of the CPS samples showed a hydrodynamic volume close to 2000 kDa by size exclusion chromatography and the exocarp and mesocarp profiles were very similar. The proton spectra ( 1 H NMR), according to sugar composition and gelling ability, confirmed the main polysaccharide fractions were pectin with different acylation and methylation degree. The CPS from Laffan and Wonderful mesocarp showed prebiotic properties in vitro with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains. The composition of the decoction (12% ellagitannins and 10% of CPS) obtained by a green extraction process of pomegranate by-products, makes it a suitable component of functional food formulations. C. jejuni is considered a food safety concern to both public health authorities and consumers since it is the leading bacterial cause of food-borne gastroenteritis in humans. A high incidence of C. jejuni in broiler flocks is often correlated to pathogen recovery in retail poultry meat, which is the main source of human infection. In this work broiler chickens were fed with a synbiotic product mixed with conventional feed using two different administration strategies. The synbiotic was formulated with the microencapsulated probiotic Bifidobacterium longum PCB133 and a xylo-oligosaccharide (XOS). 1-day old chicks were infected with C. jejuni strain M1 (10 5 cells) and the synbiotic mixture was then administered starting from the first and the 14th day of chicken life (for animal groups GrpC and GrpB respectively). The goal of this study was to monitor C. jejuni load at caecum level at different sampling time by real-time PCR, identifying the best administration strategy. The microbiological analysis of the caecal content also considered the quantification of Campylobacter spp., Bifidobacterium spp. and B. longum . The supplemented synbiotic was more successful in reducing C. jejuni and Campylobacter spp. when administered lifelong, compared to the shorter supplementation (GrpB). Bifidobacterium spp. quantification did not show significant differences among treatments and B. longum PCB133 was detected in both supplemented groups evidencing the successful colonization of the strain. Moreover, the samples of the control group (GrpA) and GrpC were analysed with PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) to compare the caecal microbial community profiles at the beginning and at the end of the trial. Pattern analysis evidenced the strong influence of the early synbiotic supplementation, although a physiological change in the microbial community, occurring during growth, could be observed. Experimental results demonstrate that the synbiotic approach at farm level can be an effective strategy, combined with biosecurity measures, to improve the safety of poultry meat. We performed a 18-month experiment on 0.496 m 3 pots filled with a sandy soil in which 1-year old nectarine trees were grown. With four replicates, the following amendment strategies were compared: a) unamended control; b) biochar (20 g fw kg −1 ); c) compost (76.8 g fw kg −1 ) and d) biocompost (mixing biochar and compost at the same rates of the previous two strategies). Amendments were applied at planting and only unamended and merely biochar-amended soils were fertilized with mineral inputs. Soil mineral N availability was regularly measured and at the end of the experiment, we determined total C and N concentration of soils and aged biochar fragments. Total soil respiration (R TOT ) was separated into soil organic-C derived (R SOC ) and rhizosphere (R R ) respiration by the trenching method. Total soil DNA was extracted from samples collected after 6 and 18 months and bacterial community analysis was carried out by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Expression of nitrification key genes of ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) and nitrite oxidoreductase (NOR) and the relative abundance of specific bacterial community ( Nitrosomonas spp. and Nitrobacter spp.) were determined by Real Time PCR on soil samples collected at 6, 12, 15, 16 and 18 months since amendments incorporation. The addition of compost significantly promoted soil mineral N, bacterial diversity and the relative expression of nitrification process related key genes. Furthermore, compost enhanced R SOC likely due to the stimulation of the microbial community by providing labile C sources. Conversely, changes due to the mere addition of biochar were negligible. However, biochar had no detrimental effects, rather it promoted gene expression involved in the nitrification process. A synergic effect between the two amendments emerged in the total soil C and N concentration and in the R SOC , leading to a significantly higher cumulative CO 2 . Although the source of the additional CO 2 rate remains uncertain, a priming effect induced by biochar on the labile compost-derived C-fractions is hypothesized. Compost reduced the relative richness of Arthrobacter spp. in soil, while Actinomadura flavalba , Saccharomonospora viridis , Thermosporomyces composti and Enterobacter spp. were peculiar of the biocompost profile which increased band richness. Biocompost significantly increased the relative abundance of Nitrosomonas spp. and Nitrobacter spp. and both AMO and NOR key genes expression levels. The mixture of biochar and compost seems effective to induce agronomical benefits, although environmental concerns (e.g. additional CO 2 emissions) require further investigations. Nowadays, honey bees are stressed by a number of biotic and abiotic factors which may compromise to some extent the pollination service and the hive productivity. The EU ban of antibiotics as therapeutic agents against bee pathogens has stimulated the search for natural alternatives. The increasing knowledge on the composition and functions of the bee gut microbiota and the link between a balanced gut microbiota and health status have encouraged the research on the use of gut microorganisms to improve bee health. Somehow, we are assisting to the transfer of the 'probiotic concept' into the bee science. In this review, we examine the role of the honey bee gut microbiota in bee health and critically describe the available applications of beneficial microorganisms as pest control agents and health support. Most of the strains, mainly belonging to the genera Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Bacillus, are isolated from honey bee crop or gut, but some applications involve environmental strains or formulation for animal and human consumption. Overall, the obtained results show the favourable effect of applied microbial strains on bee health and productivity, in particular if strains of bee origin are used. However, it is actually not yet possible to conclude whether this strategy will ever work. In particular, many aspects regarding the overall setup of the experiments, the dose, the timing and the duration of the treatment need to be optimized, also considering the microbiological safety of the hive products (i.e. pollen and honey). In addition, a deep investigation about the effect on host immunity and physiology is envisaged. Lastly, the final users of the formulations, i.e. beekeepers, should be taken into account for the achievement of high-quality, cost-effective and easy-to-use products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The faecal microbiota composition of infants born to mothers receiving intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis with ampicillin against group B Streptococcus was compared with that of control infants, at day 7 and 30 of life. Recruited newborns were both exclusive breastfed and mixed fed, in order to also study the effect of dietary factors on the microbiota composition. Massive parallel sequencing of the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene and qPCR analysis were performed. Antibiotic prophylaxis caused the most marked changes on the microbiota in breastfed infants, mainly resulting in a higher relative abundance of Enterobacteriaceae, compared with control infants (52% vs. 14%, p = 0.044) and mixed-fed infants (52% vs. 16%, p = 0.13 NS) at day 7 and in a lower bacterial diversity compared to mixed-fed infants and controls. Bifidobacteria were also particularly vulnerable and abundances were reduced in breastfed (p = 0.001) and mixed-fed antibiotic treated groups compared to non-treated groups. Reductions in bifidobacteria in antibiotic treated infants were also confirmed by qPCR. By day 30, the bifidobacterial population recovered and abundances significantly increased in both breastfed (p = 0.025) and mixed-fed (p = 0.013) antibiotic treated groups, whereas Enterobacteriaceae abundances remained highest in the breastfed antibiotic treated group (44%), compared with control infants (16%) and mixed-fed antibiotic treated group (28%). This study has therefore demonstrated the short term consequences of maternal intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis on the infant faecal microbial population, particularly in that of breastfed infants. Different factors are known to influence the early gut colonization in newborns, among them the perinatal use of antibiotics. On the other hand, the effect on the baby of the administration of antibiotics to the mother during labor, referred to as intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP), has received less attention, although routinely used in group B Streptococcus positive women to prevent the infection in newborns. In this work, the fecal microbiota of neonates born to mothers receiving IAP and of control subjects were compared taking advantage for the first time of high-throughput DNA sequencing technology. Seven different 16S rDNA hypervariable regions (V2, V3, V4, V6 + V7, V8, and V9) were amplified and sequenced using the Ion Torrent Personal Genome Machine. The results obtained showed significant differences in the microbial composition of newborns born to mothers who had received IAP, with a lower abundance of Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes as well as an overrepresentation of Proteobacteria. Considering that the seven hypervariable regions showed different discriminant ability in the taxonomic identification, further analyses were performed on the V4 region evidencing in IAP infants a reduced microbial richness and biodiversity, as well as a lower number of bacterial families with a predominance of Enterobacteriaceae members. In addition, this analysis pointed out a significant reduction in Bifidobacterium spp. strains. The reduced abundance of these beneficial microorganisms, together with the increased amount of potentially pathogenic bacteria, may suggest that IAP infants are more exposed to gastrointestinal or generally health disorders later in age. The capability of ten commercial fibers of selectively stimulating the growth of four Bifidobacterium strains were studied with the purpose of developing a synbiotic product for infants. Two galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), one fructo-oligosaccharide (sc-FOS), four inulins with different polymerization degree (DP), a gluco-oligosaccharide, an arabinogalactan and a hydrolyzed guar gum were used (10 gl −1 ). The prebiotic score was calculated comparing the capability of the fibers of stimulating the growth of bifidobacteria compared to infant pathogens. GOS, sc-FOS, low DP inulin (oligofructose) and the gluco-oligosaccharide could stimulate growth. However, the fibers showing the highest prebiotic score were oligofructose (Orafti ® HIS), sc-FOS (Actilight ® 950P) and the GOS Vivinal ® . Lyophilized strain survival in simulated gastro-intestinal conditions was also assayed to define suitable ways of administration. Survival in gastric juice at pH 2.5 was poor, whereas it was higher at pH 4, a value closer to newborn pH. Microencapsulation in a lipid matrix ensured strain survival also at pH 2.5. Survival to 1 gl −1 bile salts was acceptable. The results allowed to conclude that Bifidobacterium breve B632 strain, in a lyophilized or microencapsulated form, has the potential for use in synbiotic products targeted to infants coupled to a mixture of GOS and FOS or oligofructose. Background: Increasing evidence suggests that not only genetics, but also environmental factors like gut microbiota dysbiosis play an important role in the pathogenesis of celiac disease (CD).Aim: The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of two probiotic strains Bifidobacterium breve BR03 and B. breve B632 on serum production of anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 10 (IL-10) and pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in children with CD.Methods: The study was a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial that included 49 children with CD on gluten-free diet (GFD) randomized into two groups and 18 healthy children in the control group. The first group (24 children with CD) daily received B. breve BR03 and B632 (2 × 10(9) colony-forming units) and the second group (25 children with CD) received placebo for 3 months.Results: TNF-α levels were significantly decreased in the first group after receiving B. breve for 3 months. On follow-up, 3 months after receiving probiotics, TNF-α levels increased again. Children with CD who were on GFD for less than 1 year showed similar baseline TNF-α levels as children who were on GFD for more than 1 year. IL-10 levels were in all groups of patients below detection level.Conclusions: Probiotic intervention with B. breve strains has shown a positive effect on decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α in children with CD on GFD. Novel bio-based and biodegradable electrospun membranes, containing bactericidal ricinoleic acid (RA) units either by copolymerization with butylene succinate (BS) units or by blending PRA and PBS homopolymers, are characterized in their chemical, thermal, mechanical and surface properties. In the blends E. coli and S. aureus mortality rate increases with PRA amount, while the copolymer shows lower bactericidal activity compared to the blend with similar composition. XPS demonstrates that in the blends an enrichment of RA units at the fiber surface occurs during electrospinning due to phase separation, while in the copolymer RA units are homogeneously dispersed along fiber cross-section. Background: Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a severe disease caused by different Fusarium species, which affects a wide range of cereal crops, including wheat. It determines from 10 to 30 % of yield loss in Europe. Chemical fungicides are mainly used to reduce the incidence of FHB, but low environmental impact solutions are looked forward. Applications of soil/rhizobacteria as biocontrol agents against FHB in wheat are described in literature, whereas the potential use of lactobacilli in agriculture has scarcely been explored. Results: The aim of this work was to study the inhibitory effect of two bacterial strains, Lactobacillus plantarum SLG17 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FLN13, against Fusarium spp. in vitro and to assess their efficacy in field, coupled to the study of the microbial community profile of wheat seeds. Antimicrobial assays were performed on agar plates and showed that the two antagonistic strains possessed antimicrobial activity against Fusarium spp. In the field study, a mixture of the two strains was applied to durum wheat i) weekly from heading until anthesis and ii) at flowering, compared to untreated and fungicide treated plots. The FHB index, combining both disease incidence and disease severity, was used to evaluate the extent of the disease on wheat. A mixture of the two microorganisms, when applied in field from heading until anthesis, was capable of reducing the FHB index. Microbial community profile of seeds was studied via PCR-DGGE, showing the presence of L. plantarum SLG17 in wheat seeds and thus underlining an endophytic behavior of the strain. Conclusions: L. plantarum SLG17 and B. amyloliquefaciens FLN13, applied as biocontrol agents starting from the heading period until anthesis of wheat plants, are promising agents for the reduction of FHB index. Anti-Listeria bacterial starters are highly demanded by the meat industry. Novel bioprotective anti-Listeria starters were searched among Lactobacillus species strains isolated from artisanal sausages. The screening confirmed that anti-Listeria activity is a strain-specific property and yielded only 1 strain (of 36) exhibiting a satisfactory level of inhibition, L. delbrueckii WC0286. This strain was compared with two commercial bioprotective starters, SafePro B-SF-43 and SafePro B-LC-20, in a model simulating in vitro the first step of the fermentation process. The presence of the bioprotective starters did not modify the pH in such a way that could affect the safety or organoleptic properties of the product. Both SafePro B-SF-43 and SafePro B-LC-20 effected an important reduction of Listeria counts (0.56 and 0.72 log CFU g-1, respectively, in 72 h), while the anti-Listeria effect of L. delbrueckii WC0286 was minor (0.15 log CFU g-1). These results discouraged the utilization of L. delbrueckii WC0286 for a challenge test in a pilot salami production, in favor of the best-performing bioprotective starter, SafePro B-LC-20. The test confirmed that SafePro B-LC-20 did not alter the acidification trend of sausages and was capable of inhibiting Listeria, which decreased by 1.21 log CFU g-1. This information is relevant to address research activity toward the development of new bioprotective starters. The data herein presented demonstrate that the efficacy in Listeria control of potentially bioprotective bacterial starters requires further validation in real meat matrixes, possibly by using in vitro meat fermentation experiments to narrow down the list of candidates before pilot scale challenge tests. Infant colic is a common gastrointestinal disorder of newborns, mostly related to imbalances in the composition of gut microbiota and particularly to the presence of gas-producing coliforms and to lower levels of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. Probiotics could help to contain this disturbance, with formulations consisting of Lactobacillus strains being the most utilized. In this work, the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium breve B632 that was specifically selected for its ability to inhibit gas-producing coliforms, was challenged against the Enterobacteriaceae within continuous cultures of microbiota from a 2-month-old colicky infant. As confirmed by RAPD-PCR fingerprinting, B. breve B632 persisted in probiotic-supplemented microbiota cultures, accounting for the 64% of Bifidobacteria at the steady state. The probiotic succeeded in inhibiting coliforms, since FISH and qPCR revealed that the amount of Enterobacteriaceae after 18 h of cultivation was 0.42 and 0.44 magnitude orders lower (ρ < 0.05) in probioticsupplemented microbiota cultures than in the control ones. These results support the possibility to move to another level of study, that is, the administration of B. breve B632 to a cohort of colicky newborns, in order to observe the behavior of this strain in vivo and to validate its effect in colic treatment. The photocatalytic effect of TiO2 has great potential for the disinfection of surfaces. Most studies reported in the literature use UV activation of TiO2, while visible light has been used only in a few applications. In these studies, high concentrations of TiO2, which can compromise surface properties, have been used. In this work, we have developed an acrylic-water paint dispersion containing low TiO2 content (2 vol %) for the inactivation of microorganisms involved in hospital-acquired infections. The nanoparticles and the coating have been characterized using spectroscopic techniques and transmission electron microscopy, showing their homogenous dispersion in the acrylic urethane coating. A common fluorescent light source was used to activate the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. The paint dispersion showed antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The coating containing the TiO2 nanoparticles maintained good UV stability, strong adhesion to the substrate and high hardness. Background: Bifidobacterium represents one of the largest genus within the Actinobacteria, and includes at present 32 species. These species share a high sequence homology of 16S rDNA and several molecular techniques already applied to discriminate among them give ambiguous results. The slightly higher variability of the hsp60 gene sequences with respect to the 16S rRNA sequences offers better opportunities to design or develop molecular assays, allowing identification and differentiation of closely related species. hsp60 can be considered an excellent additional marker for inferring the taxonomy of the members of Bifidobacterium genus. Results: This work illustrates a simple and cheap molecular tool for the identification of Bifidobacterium species. The hsp60 universal primers were used in a simple PCR procedure for the direct amplification of 590 bp of the hsp60 sequence. The in silico restriction analysis of bifidobacterial hsp60 partial sequences allowed the identification of a single endonuclease (HaeIII) able to provide different PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns in the Bifidobacterium spp. type strains evaluated. The electrophoretic analyses allowed to confirm the different RFLP patterns. Conclusions: The developed PCR-RFLP technique resulted in efficient discrimination of the tested species and subspecies and allowed the construction of a dichotomous key in order to differentiate the most widely distributed Bifidobacterium species as well as the subspecies belonging to B. pseudolongum and B. animalis. BACKGROUND: Wheat grains are a rich source of dietary fibres, particularly in the western human diet. Many of the health effects attributed to dietary fibres are believed to be related to their microbial fermentation in the gut. This study evaluated the ability of two potentially probiotic strains, Lactobacillus plantarum L12 and Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum B7003, to ferment soluble dietary fibres (SDFs) from modern and ancient durum-type wheat grains. RESULTS: Fibre microbial utilisation was highly variable and dependent on the strain. SDFs from the varieties Svevo and Solex supported the growth of L. plantarum L12 the best, whereas those from the varieties Anco Marzio, Solex and Kamut® Khorasan were good carbohydrate substrates for B. pseudocatenulatum B7003. The highest prebiotic activity scores (describing the extent to which prebiotics support selective growth of probiotics) for B7003 were obtained with SDFs from the varieties Solex (0.57), Kamut® Khorasan (0.56) and Iride (0.55), whereas for L12 the highest scores were achieved with the varieties Orobel (0.63), Kamut® Khorasan (0.56) and Solex (0.53). CONCLUSION: The present study has identified some SDFs from durum-type wheat grains as suitable prebiotic substrates for the selective proliferation of B. pseudocatenulatum B7003 and L. plantarum L12 in vitro. Abstract: Imidazolium poly(butylene terephthalate) ionomers with ionic groups located randomly along the polymer chain or selectively as end-groups (telechelic) have been prepared in order to determine their antimicrobial (AM) activity. Two different approaches have been followed for the linkage of the imidazolium to the polymer backbone: a covalent bond and an ionic aggregation to sulfonated groups covalently bonded to the polymer. The ionic groups have been linked to the polymer in order to improve the long-term AM activity since the low molecular weight additives commonly used tends to migrate toward the surface during use. We have found that imidazolium ionomers present AM activity comparable with that of commercial antimicrobial agents such as Triclosan. The AM activity depends on the polymer architecture, the telechelic approach being more active compared to the random approach. We have proved that imidazolium ionomers retain their high AM activity even after 6 days in water at 60 °C while Triclosan consistently loses his activity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Surface coatings of pretreated poly(fluoroethylene propylene) (FEP) films by UV-induced graft copolymerization with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and an antimicrobial agent, 3-hexadecyl-1-vinylimidazolium bromide (VIB), have been carried out. Surface chemical and morphological modifications were investigated with spectroscopic analysis using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction distribution map of bromide atoms. Fluorescein dye absorption studies were performed in order to quantify the amount of reacted VIB. Antibacterial activities were assayed with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, a Gram positive bacterium) culture on HEMA-VIB modified FEP specimens, prepared with different amounts of the antimicrobial agent. In addition to bactericidal properties, the functionalized FEP surface also prevented the adhesion of microorganisms to the film. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Poly(butylene terephthalate) ionomers with imidazolium groups selectively located as end-groups (telechelic) have been prepared by melt polycondensation adding a hydroxyl derivatized imidazolium salt at the beginning of the polymerization process. The design of the chemical structure of the imidazolium salt is of fundamental importance in order to achieve the synthesis of ionomers with good thermo-mechanical properties. The final ionomers present high molecular weight, good color, transparency and thermal stability. Imidazolium ionomers present good antimicrobial (AM) properties comparable with those of commercial AM agents. The incorporation of the ionic groups in the polymer chain prevents their migration during use and therefore the antimicrobial activity can be preserved for longer time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Anatase-structured TiO2 films were deposited on a commercial fluorinated polymer (FEP) with a treated surface, by means of a sol–gel dip-coating technique. Two different curing temperatures were investigated and the film microstructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses. The prepared samples presented very high performances in terms of photocatalytic activities, analyzed by the degradation of an organic dye in a liquid medium, and of bactericidal activities, tested on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, a Gram positive bacterium) and Escherichia coli (E. coli, a Gram negative bacterium).
