TECHNOLOGY , *INFORMATION storage & retrieval systems , *INFORMATION retrieval , *LAPTOP computers , *ELECTROMAGNETIC induction - Abstract
This paper provides answers to questions concerning technology issues. Storage capacity depends on what one is putting into the repository and how big it is going to get. Note that prices vary wildly. For instance, Geek.com claimed that 1 terabyte drives were going for $1,2000 in January 2005, but Computerworld magazine claimed IBM would be selling 67 terabyte drives at $7,000 per terabyte. The laptop invented by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is part of a project called The $100 Laptop, which has great goal--to provide underprivileged children with portable computing. It turns out that one of the hardest obstacles to overcome when trying to accomplish this is not the display. It is the power source. MIT is using something called magnetic induction to charge a battery. One may remember Faraday's law by the same name, which basically states that when a magnet passes through a coil, it produces electricity. The same principle is applied to the laptop battery, which needs to be cranked in some way to build power.

ONLINE information services , *INFORMATION services , *INFORMATION storage & retrieval systems , *ENGINEERING databases , *INFORMATION retrieval , *INFORMATION science - Abstract
This article features Answers.com, an online information service created by GuruNet. Answers.com is a re-launch of a service formerly called GuruNet which has been in existence since 2000. Along with improving the service's depth of information and ease of use, GuruNet is bravely bucking the free-to-fee trend. Instead of charging fees and shrinking its userbase, it has changed Answers.com from a $30-per-year service to a free, advertising-supported service in the hope of making money through volume. According to GuruNet CEO Bob Rosenschein, Answers.com is a one-stop source of information on more than a million topics drawn from a database of 100-pIus reference sources including dictionaries, thesauri, specialized glossaries, encyclopedias, atlases, magazines, and other references. Answers.com doesn't compete with search engines such as Google or with reference sites such as Ref-Desk, both of which return links that one has to click through to get information. It is closer to an almanac site such as Infoplease or an encyclopedia site such as Britannica Online. It shines in providing with answers quickly, offering the most important information first and supporting details second. As with an encyclopedia, on shouldn't expect cutting-edge research or the kind of authority one can cite in a scholarly paper.

This section presents case studies on the deployment of Google Search Appliance in various companies. As medical technology leader with $8 billion in annual revenues, Medtronic enables medical professionals to develop comprehensive solutions to chronic conditions such as heart disease, neurological disorders, and vascular illnesses. Medtronic's 30,000 employees, especially research scientists and engineers, must be able to access each other's internal information such as published papers, recent medical journal abstracts and presentations. Another company in which the Google Search Appliance was deployed is Xerox Corp. The global leader in document management, the company generated $16 billion in revenue in 2003. The company offers an innovative array of color and black-and-white digital printers, digital presses, multifunction devices as well as a broad range of services, solutions, and software. At another company, USATODAY.com, more than 35 million people depend on the company each month for the same breaking news and informational graphics they find in each printed issue of USA TODAY. This award-winning news and information site delivers more than 250,000 pages of breaking news, updated 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The article focuses on the technology used by the law firm Preston Gates & Ellis for searching and managing their big computer files. Attenex Patterns helps employees search and sort up to 20,000 documents at a time. Employees can search for key nouns and noun phrases, and Attenex's visualization capabilities create clusters out of related keywords. Instead of having to sift through boxes of paper manually, document analysis technology group workers perform simple searches to locate important paperwork and literally see the connections between the documents. This process enhances the company's ability to perform a consistent search across a variety of formats for material relevant to a specific subject.

The article reports on the partnership between Google and 17 schools for a pilot program to enable searching among DSpace repositories, in July 2004. DSpace is an open-source software designed to assist colleges and universities in creating, managing, and maintaining digital repositories. There are currently about 125 schools using this software, but no tool existed that enabled searching across repositories instead of just within them. The number of documents available for searching has been one point of contention for DSpace. Each of the 17 participants had an average of 1,000 papers in its digital archive. While some universities had considerably more than 1,000 documents, most hovered around 100 and many had considerably fewer. Universities involved in the project are: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge; Australian National University, Canberra; Cornell University, Ithaca, New York; Cranfield University, England; European University Institute, Domenico DiFies, Italy; Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, China; Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis; Minho University; Ohio State University, Columbus; University of Arizona, Tucson; University of Calgary, Atlanta; University of Oregon, Eugene; University of Parma, Italy; University of Rochester, New York; University of Toronto, Ontario; University of Washington, Seattle; and University of Wisconsin.
