High mud content in the sand has a negative impact on cement mortar but there is little research on Alkali-activated slag (AAS) mortar. In order to explore the impacts of mud content in the sand on the performance of AAS mortar, this paper used sand that contains silt, clay, and a mixture of silt and clay; tested the setting time of AAS with different mud contents of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10%; and measured the unconfined compressive strength and beam flexural strength of 3 d, 7 d, and 28 d AAS mortar specimens. The microstructure of AAS mortar with different kinds of mud was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the elemental composition of the hydration product was tested by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and the AAS interaction mechanism with different kinds of mud was analyzed. The main conclusions are: the higher the mud content in the sand, the shorter the initial setting time and the longer the final setting time of AAS, mainly because the mud in the sand affects the hydration process; mud content above 4% causes a rapid decrease in the compressive and flexural strengths of AAS mortar, mainly because the mud affects the hydration process and hinders the bonding of the hydration product with the sand. When there is no mud in the sand, the main hydration product of AAS is dense calcium-alumina-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) gel. When the sand contains silt, the hydration product of AAS is loose C-A-S-H gel. When the sand contains clay, the hydration products of AAS contain C-A-S-H gel and a small amount of sodium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (N-A-S-H), and needle-like crystals. The setting time of alkali-activated slag (AAS) binders is extremely short, while traditional retarders of Portland cement may be invalid for AAS. To find an effective retarder with a less negative impact on strength, borax (B), sucrose (S), and citric acid (CA) were selected as potential retarders. The setting time of AAS with different admixtures dosages of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, and the unconfined compressive strength and beam flexural strength of 3 d, 7 d, and 28 d AAS mortar specimens were tested. The microstructure of AAS with different additives was observed by scanning using an electron microscope (SEM), and the hydration products were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (DT-TGA) to explain the retarding mechanism of AAS with different additives. The results showed that the incorporation of borax and citric acid could effectively prolong the setting time of AAS more than that of sucrose, and the retarding effect is more and more obvious with the increase in borax and citric acid dosages. However, sucrose and citric acid negatively influence AAS's unconfined compressive strength and flexural stress. The negative effect becomes more evident with the increase in sucrose and citric acid dosages. Borax is the most suitable retarder for AAS among the three selected additives. Graphene is a two-dimensional nanomaterial with excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. The application of graphene in cement-based materials has good prospects. However, the mechanical properties of cement-based materials are difficult to be significantly enhanced by ordinary graphene nanoplates. In this paper, nitrogen-doped graphene is first reported as an additive with dosages of 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 wt.%, respectively, to prepare iron ore tailings–based cementitious composites. The iron ore tailings–based cementitious composite with 0.02 wt.% graphene shows an extremely high flexural strength of 15.05 MPa at 3 days, which is 134.4% higher than that of the iron ore tailings–based cementitious composite without graphene. The effects of graphene content and curing age on the flexural strength and microstructure of iron ore tailings–based cementitious composites were studied. In particular, the scanning electron microscope was adopted to observe the micromorphology of the composites. It is helpful to understand the graphene reinforcement mechanism for the high early flexural strength of iron ore tailings–based cementitious composites. By altering the morphology of iron ore tailings–based cementitious composites, graphene plays two roles in the composites. One role is to connect C-(A)-S-H gels, ettringite and other hydrated crystals to construct a three-dimensional structure. The other is to attract iron ore tailings distributed on its platform to enhance its flexural strength properties. This study investigated the effect of a low amount of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and steel fiber reinforcement on fly ash-based geopolymer composite long-term deflection and its microstructure. For testing purposes, specimens with different amounts and types of fiber reinforcement as well as plain (reference) were prepared. The long-term deflection test was performed by loading specimens with 40% of the ultimate flexural strength. A microstructure analysis was performed using polished section specimens, and images were acquired at 25-times magnification on a scanning electron microscope. The results of the flexural strength test show that all geopolymer composites with fiber reinforcement have lower flexural strength than plain geopolymer composites. The long-term deflection tests show that the highest deflections exhibit 1% PVA fiber-reinforced specimens. The lowest amount of deflection is for 1% steel fiber-reinforced specimens. Specific creep shows similar results to plain, and 1% steel fiber-reinforced specimens, while 1% PVA and 0.5% PVA/0.5% steel fiber-reinforced specimen exhibits the same properties. The quantitative microanalysis of the polished section further confirms the deflection results. Specimens with 1% PVA fiber reinforcement have significantly higher porosity than all other specimens. They are followed by plain specimens and 1% steel fiber, and 0.5% PVA/0.5 steel fiber-reinforced specimens have almost the same porosity level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, ground glass powder and crushed waste glass were used to replace coarse and fine aggregates. Within the scope of the study, fine aggregate (FA) and coarse aggregate (CA) were changed separately with proportions of 10%, 20%, 40%, and 50%. According to the mechanical test, including compression, splitting tensile, and flexural tests, the waste glass powder creates a better pozzolanic effect and increases the strength, while the glass particles tend to decrease the strength when they are swapped with aggregates. As observed in the splitting tensile test, noteworthy progress in the tensile strength of the concrete was achieved by 14%, while the waste glass used as a fractional replacement for the fine aggregate. In samples where glass particles were swapped with CA, the tensile strength tended to decrease. It was noticed that with the adding of waste glass at 10%, 20%, 40%, and 50% of FA swapped, the increase in flexural strength was 3.2%, 6.3%, 11.1%, and 4.8%, respectively, in amount to the reference one (6.3 MPa). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis consequences also confirm the strength consequences obtained from the experimental study. While it is seen that glass powder provides better bonding with cement with its pozzolanic effect and this has a positive effect on strength consequences, it is seen that voids are formed in the samples where large glass pieces are swapped with aggregate and this affects the strength negatively. Furthermore, simple equations using existing data in the literature and the consequences obtained from the current study were also developed to predict mechanical properties of the concrete with recycled glass for practical applications. In this study, the effect of waste glass on the mechanical properties of concrete was examined by conducting a series of compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength tests. According to this aim, waste glass powder (WGP) was first used as a partial replacement for cement and six different ratios of WGP were utilized in concrete production: 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. To examine the combined effect of different ratios of WGP on concrete performance, mixed samples (10%, 20%, 30%) were then prepared by replacing cement, and fine and coarse aggregates with both WGP and crashed glass particles. Workability and slump values of concrete produced with different amounts of waste glass were determined on the fresh state of concrete, and these properties were compared with those of plain concrete. For the hardened concrete, 150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm cubic specimens and cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 200 mm were tested to identify the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of the concrete produced with waste glass. Next, a three-point bending test was carried out on samples with dimensions of 100 × 100 × 400 mm, and a span length of 300 mm to obtain the flexure behavior of different mixtures. According to the results obtained, a 20% substitution of WGP as cement can be considered the optimum dose. On the other hand, for concrete produced with combined WGP and crashed glass particles, mechanical properties increased up to a certain limit and then decreased owing to poor workability. Thus, 10% can be considered the optimum replacement level, as combined waste glass shows considerably higher strength and better workability properties. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was performed to investigate the microstructure of the composition. Good adhesion was observed between the waste glass and cementitious concrete. Lastly, practical empirical equations have been developed to determine the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexure strength of concrete with different amounts of waste glass. Instead of conducting an experiment, these strength values of the concrete produced with glass powder can be easily estimated at the design stage with the help of proposed expressions. CaO and MgO are both reported as effective activators for blast furnace slag. However, the synergistic effect of these two components on the mechanical properties of alkali-activated blast furnace slag remains unclear. In this study, the flexural and compressive strengths of alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder with MgO and CaO range from 0% to 30% by the mass ratio of alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder are investigated. Moreover, the dry shrinkage rate of alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder is measured. One percent refractory fibers by volume of binder materials are added in the alkali-activated blast furnace slag. Some refractory fibers are treated with water flushing, meanwhile, some refractory fibers are directly used without any treatment. Finally, the scanning electron microscope, the thermogravimetric analysis curves and the XRD diffraction spectrums are obtained to reflect the inner mechanism of the alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder's mechanical properties. The water-binder ratios of the alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder are 0.35 and 0.42. The curing ages are 3 d, 7 d and 28 d. The measuring temperature for the specimens ranges from 20 °C to 800 °C. Results show that the flexural and compressive strengths increase with the increased curing age, the decreased water-binder ratio and the addition of refractory fibers. The water-treated refractory fibers can improve the mechanical strengths. The mechanical strengths increase in the form of a quadratic function with the mass ratio of MgO and CaO, when the curing age is 3 d, the increasing effect is the most obvious. A higher water-binder ratio leads to an increasing the drying shrinkage rate. The activated blast furnace slag powder with CaO shows a higher drying shrinkage rate. Polyurethane cement (PUC) is now commonly used in the reinforcement of old bridges, which exhibit various issues such as poor toughness, temperature-sensitive mechanical properties, and brittle failure. These problems can lead to the failure of the reinforcement effect of the PUC on old bridges in certain operating environments, leading to the collapse of such reinforced bridges. In order to alleviate these shortcomings, in this study, the toughness of PUC is improved by adding polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber, carbon fiber, and steel fiber. In addition, we study the change law of the flexural strength of PUC between −40 °C and +40 °C. The control parameters evaluated are fiber type, fiber volume ratio, and temperature. A series of flexural tests and scanning electron microscope (SEM) test results show that the flexural strength first increases and then decreases with the increase in the volume-doping ratio of the three fibers. The optimum volume-mixing ratios of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber, carbon fiber, and steel fiber are 0.3%, 0.04% and 1%, respectively. Excessive addition of fiber will affect the operability and will adversely affect the mechanical properties. The flexural strength of both fiber-reinforced and control samples decreases with increasing temperature. Using the flexural test results, a two-factor (fiber content, temperature) BP neural network flexural strength prediction model is established. SiC-TiB2-TiC composites with matrices consisting of semiconductor material (SiC), conductive materials (TiB2-TiC), or their combination were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 2000 °C in a vacuum under a pressure of 80 MPa for 3 min. The composition and microstructure of the obtained composites were studied by X-ray diffraction and a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive detector. The flexural strength, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness of SPSed samples were determined. Based on the observations in this work, three variations of the sintering process were proposed with different matrix compositions. The dense (99.7%) 60SiC-25TiB2-15TiC vol.% sintered ceramic composites exhibited the highest strength and hardness values of the studied composites, as well as a fracture toughness of 6.2 MPa·m1/2. Cracks in typical mortar constructions enhance water permeability and degrade ions into the structure, resulting in decreased mortar durability and strength. In this study, mortar samples are created that self-healed their cracks by precipitating calcium carbonate into them. Bacillus subtilus bacterium (10−7, 10−9 cells/mL), calcium lactate, fine aggregate, OPC-cement, water, and bagasse ash were used to make self-healing mortar samples. Calcium lactates were prepared from discarded eggshells and lactic acid to reduce the cost of self-healing mortars, and 5% control burnt bagasse ash was also employed as an OPC-cement alternative. In the presence of moisture, the bacterial spores in mortars become active and begin to feed the nutrient (calcium lactate). The calcium carbonate precipitates and plugs the fracture. Our experimental results demonstrated that cracks in self-healing mortars containing bagasse ash were largely healed after 3 days of curing, but this did not occur in conventional mortar samples. Cracks up to 0.6 mm in self-healing mortars were filled with calcite using 10−7 and 10−9 cell/mL bacteria concentrations. Images from an optical microscope, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to confirm the production of calcite in fractures. Furthermore, throughout the pre- and post-crack-development stages, self-healing mortars have higher compressive strength than conventional mortars. The precipitated calcium carbonates were primed to compact the samples by filling the void spaces in hardened mortar samples. When fissures developed in hardened mortars, bacteria became active in the presence of moisture, causing calcite to precipitate and fill the cracks. The compressive strength and flexural strength of self-healing mortar samples are higher than conventional mortars before cracks develop in the samples. After the healing process of the broken mortar parts (due to cracking), self-healing mortars containing 5% bagasse ash withstand a certain load and have greater flexural strength (100 kPa) than conventional mortars (zero kPa) at 28 days of cure. Self-healing mortars absorb less water than typical mortar samples. Mortar samples containing 10−7 bacteria cells/mL exhibit greater compressive strength, flexural strength, and self-healing ability. XRD and SEM were used to analyze mortar samples with healed fractures. XRD, FTIR, and SEM images were also used to validate the produced calcium lactate. In this study, aramid fiber (Kevlar® 29 fiber) and carbon fiber were added into concrete in a hybrid manner to enhance the static and impact mechanical properties. The coupling agent presence on the surface of carbon fibers was spotted in Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) graphs. The carbon fiber with a coupling agent affected the mechanical strength of the reinforced concrete. At 1% fiber/cement weight percentage, the hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete (HFRC) prepared using Kevlar fiber and carbon fiber of 12 and 24 mm in length under different mix proportions was investigated to determine the maximum mechanical strengths. From the test results, the mechanical strength of the HFRC attained better performance than that of the concrete with only Kevlar or carbon fibers. Foremost, the mix proportion of Kevlar/carbon fiber (50–50%) significantly improved the compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths. Under different impact energies, the impact resistance of the HFRC specimen was much higher than that of the benchmark specimen, and the damage of the HFRC specimens was examined with an optical microscope to identify slippage or rupture failure of the fiber in concrete. In this paper, the mechanical performance of an ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) repaired cementitious composite system, including the old matrix and the new reinforcement (UHPC), under various high temperature levels (20 °C, 100 °C, 300 °C, and 500 °C) was studied. In this system, UHPC reinforced with different contents of steel fibers and polypropylene (PP) fibers was utilized. Moreover, the physical, compressive, bonding, and flexural behaviors of the UHPC repaired system after being exposed to different high temperatures were investigated. Meanwhile, X-ray diffraction (XRD), baseline evaluation test (BET), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were conducted to analyze the effect of high temperature on the microstructural changes in a UHPC repaired cementitious composite system. Results indicate that the appearance of the bonded system changed, and its mass decreased slightly. The average percentage of residual mass of the system was 99.5%, 96%, and 94–95% at 100 °C, 300 °C, and 500 °C, respectively. The residual compressive strength, bonding strength, and flexural performance improved first and then deteriorated with the increase of temperature. When the temperature reached 500 °C, the compressive strength, bonding strength, and flexural strength decreased by about 20%, 30%, and 15% for the UHPC bonded system, respectively. Under high temperature, the original components of UHPC decreased and the pore structure deteriorated. The cumulative pore volume at 500 °C could reach more than three times that at room temperature (about 20 °C).
