Electric power systems are allowing higher penetration levels of renewable energy resources, mainly due to their environmental benefits. The majority of electrical energy generated by renewable energy resources is contributed by wind farms. However, the stochastic nature of these resources does not allow the installed generation capacities to be entirely utilized. In this context, this paper attempts to improve the performance of fixed-speed wind turbines. Turbines of this type have been already installed in some classical wind farms and it is not feasible to replace them with variable-speed ones before their lifetime ends. A fixed-speed turbine is typically connected to the electric grid with a Static VAR Compensator (SVC) across its terminal. For a better dynamic voltage response, the controller gains of a Proportional-Integral (PI) voltage regulator within the SVC will be tuned using a variety of optimization techniques to minimize the integrated square of error for the wind farm terminal voltage. Similarly, the controller gains of the turbine's pitch angle may be tuned to enhance its dynamic output power performance. Simulation results, in this paper, show that the pitch angle controller causes a significant minimization in the integrated square of error for the wind farm output power. Finally, an advanced Proportional-Integral-Acceleration (PIA) voltage regulator controller has been proposed for the SVC. Traditionally, transmission lines have been operated based on static thermal rating, which is determined by fixed and conservative meteorological data. It causes underutilization of potential transmission capacity. To overcome this limitation, this paper presents seasonal time scale, which can provide flexible ratings. Seasonal meteorological parameters are uncertain. The uncertainty can directly impact the conductor temperature, and eventually impact transmission capacity of the lines. In order to account for the uncertainty, this paper presents an uncertainty analysis model. This model consists of three parts: establishment of probability distribution models, Monte Carlo simulation, and operation risk assessment. In the case study, the actual meteorological data for 7 years in the Weihai is utilized, and is divided into four subsets by spring, summer, autumn and winter. The uncertainty analysis model is tested on an actual 47 km Wei-Kun line and a 4-bus power system. While the use of renewable energy systems in electric power generation is increasing more and more, wind energy conversion systems (WECS) receive considerable attention among these. Thanks to the ability of power generation in all wind speed range by controlling the rotor speed, Variable Speed WECSs are more preferred than fixed speed WECSs. When considering small-scale applications in variable speed WECS, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) based WECS structures are focus of the interest due to their advantages such as high efficiency and low maintenance costs. The generator must be operated at an optimum speed to obtain maximum power from the WECS. Moreover, different Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) methods can be used to control and determine optimal operating speed. In this paper, WECS configuration consists of PMSG, uncontrolled rectifier, DC link capacitor, DC-DC boost converter and DC-Bus. Capturing the maximum power from WECS and supplying the DC-Bus is performed via tip speed ratio and PI control (TSR-PI) based MPPT method. Moreover, two wind speed profiles having constant and instant changes are created to test the performance of the proposed method. For comparison purposes, perturbation & observation (P&O) based MPPT method is also carried out in here. According to obtained results from this study performed in Matlab/Simulink environment, it is verified that TSR-PI based MPPT method ensures higher power and efficiency for these wind speed profiles by means of a more successful generator speed tracking. Elimination of harmonics by the use of power filters is required for power quality improvement; provides a wide area for the researchers to develop efficient power filters with improved control platforms. This paper motivates the implementation of the embedded control platform for better control of the power filters for faster elimination of harmonics. Although many embedded processors fascinates the implementation of the control techniques but finding the feasible platform is a great task. Software implementations are feasible for most of the power electronics converters but the hardware design with required digital hardware is a challenging task. The present paper deals with the development of the control technique for the Hybrid Active Power Filter with Xilinx System Generator Platform. The virtual FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) platform provided by the Xilinx System Generator has the ability to generate better switching signals for the control of the power filter to generate compensating signal for elimination of harmonics to maintain the power quality in the distribution lines. Phasor Measurement Units have facilitated tracking of oscillations in power system response signals. This has provided an impetus for identifying unstable component modes directly from oscillatory signals. Prony analysis, the earliest method proposed for this purpose, throws up some trivial modes. These not only distract the analyzer but also prolong processing time thereby delaying corrective action. Hence the fitness metric chosen should serve to minimize the number of trivial modes. The conventional fitness metric is Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), which is actually Signal-to- Estimation error Ratio (SER). This paper proposes that Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) can also serve well as a fitness metric. It is shown through case studies carried out on well-known four-machine power system that there are a few cases where MAPE performs better than SER while in some instances SER works better. This inference is verified even in the presence of measurement noise. Hence a novel fitness metric is proposed combining MAPE with SER. Case studies on simulated signals obtained from New England-power system prove that this novel metric can achieve considerable reduction in processing time. This paper proposes a stochastic optimization technique for solving the Voltage/VAr control problem including the load demand and Renewable Energy Resources (RERs) variation. The RERs often take along some inputs like stochastic behavior. One of the important challenges i. e., Voltage/VAr control is a prime source for handling power system complexity and reliability, hence it is the fundamental requirement for all the utility companies. There is a need for the robust and efficient Voltage/ VAr optimization technique to meet the peak demand and reduction of system losses. The voltages beyond the limit may damage costly sub-station devices and equipments at consumer end as well. Especially, the RERs introduces more disturbances and some of the RERs are not even capable enough to meet the VAr demand. Therefore, there is a strong need for the Voltage/VAr control in RERs environment. This paper aims at the development of optimal scheme for Voltage/VAr control involving RERs. In this paper, Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method is used to cover full range of variables by maximally satisfying the marginal distribution. Here, backward scenario reduction technique is used to reduce the number of scenarios effectively and maximally retain the fitting accuracy of samples. In this paper an improved over current relay coordination protection technique is proposed. The proposed technique eliminates the sympathetic/nuisance tripping in an interconnected distribution system. Nuisance trippings are eliminated by incorporating the additional selectivity constraints in conventional over current relay coordination problem. Whenever the fault is cleared only from one end of the line in bidirectional fault feed lines, transient network configuration comes into existence. Transient network configuration causes the redistribution of fault in the distribution system and leads to further nuisance tripping of relays. This problem in this paper is solved by minimising the operating time gap between primary relays located at near end and far end of a faulty line to the best minimum possible value. The differential search algorithm is applied for optimization of highly non-linear over current relay coordination problem in this paper. The result presented in this paper shows that the proposed over current relay coordination technique is immune against the sympathetic/nuisance tripping and operating time difference between primary relays at near end and far end is also minimised within acceptable time margin successfully. In power system, utility engineers are often faced with the challenge of reinforcing weak power networks without adding any new infrastructures. This paper analyses the topological structure of a topologically weak network and then institutes a way of reinforcing the network through restructuring. The proposed scheme explores the concept of network structural characteristics of power networks in conjunction with the shortest electrical distance from graph theory. The branch impedances of new sets of candidate transmission lines that could possibly reinforce the existing structurally weak network are determined. The standard IEEE 5-bus and 30-bus test systems are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Aggregated loads play a significant role in maintaining the frequency of power system when the generation is not able to follow frequency deviations. An automatic Demand Dispatch (DD) enables the power system to employ the aggregated loads for balancing demand and supply. In this paper, a Demand Side Frequency Droop (DSFD) has been proposed which provides ancillary service to the grid and maintains the frequency of the power system when the generation system is not capable of following the demand. At the time of a frequency fall/rise, Balancing Authority (BA) can detect aggregated load or group of aggregated loads that have power consumption above or below their standard maximum/minimum consumption levels. Then, the BA issues a droop-based signal to the relevant aggregator. Afterwards, the DSFD will be implemented in the aggregator or the group of aggregators to specify the required power consumption amount for bringing the frequency back to its rated level. Subsequently, this signal will be sent to the Appliance Management Unit (AMU) at each participating house. The AMU sends the signal in the form of deferral or interruptible commands to the appliances depending on the priority, availability and the specification of the appliances. Plug-in electrical vehicles (PEVs) can participate in frequency regulation (FR) in electric power systems under the framework of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. With a growing number of electrical vehicles (EVs), a greater number of distributed electrical vehicle (EV) chargers may change charge or discharge power simultaneously to participate in FR, resulting in over response. In this paper, considering the over-response and equality issues, an asynchronous method for dispersed PEVs participation in FR is proposed. PEVs participate in FR with the same set of parameters. Over-response can be avoided during the process of FR. Equality enables the dispersed PEVs to participate in FR with the same probability. The presented method empowers PEVs to actively participate in FR without a control centre or a communication network. This paper proposes two techniques for the identification of critical buses in a power system. The technique of Network Structural Theory Participation Factor (NSTPF) depends on the network structural interconnection of buses as captured by the admittance matrix of the system and is formulated based on the fundamental circuit theory law using eigenvalue decomposition method. Another power flow based technique which depends on the system maximum loadability, the system step size among other factors is also proposed. Traditional power flow based techniques are used as benchmarks to determine the significance of the proposed methods. To ensure voltage stability enhancement, STATCOM FACTS device is installed at the selected weak load buses of the practical Nigerian 24 bus and IEEE 30 bus test systems. The results of the simulation obtained show that, the suggested approach of NSTPF is more suitable in the identification of weak buses that are liable to voltage instability in power systems as it requires less computational burden and also saves time compared to techniques based on power flow solutions. In this paper, the concept of analog filter circuit is used for designing of wide area damping controller (WADC) in power system. The designed continuous mode filter based WADC is robust enough to deal with the problem of imperfect communication medium, which include process noise, measurement noise and signal latency in wide area remote signal. Residue method is used for the selection of wide area control signal and controller location. Modelling of imperfect communication network is done using Pade approximation and by inserting Gaussian random noise. The effectiveness of filter based WADC as a power system stability agent is assessed in the frequency domain using two typical test power systems and via appropriate time domain simulations based upon the non-linear model on MATLAB/Simulink software platform. Aimed at the miniaturization of the power-supply system for electromagnetic launch (EML) system, this paper deals with the problem of high rate pulse discharge of lithium batteries in the EML system. In order to reduce the number of batteries on series-parallel to increase the energy density, the factors such as safety, exotherm and life cycle must be taken into consideration, and there is need for optimization in terms of selection and design as well as discharge control of the battery. According to the power requirements of the EML system, the battery safety and discharge ability are important indexes in the aspect of selection and design, which refer to the design principle for selected batteries and the design scheme for raising their discharge ability under the precondition of discharge, and in the aspect of discharge control, the balancing-discharge control strategy is adopted to reduce the duration of high-rate discharge and the heat generation and extend the service life of batteries according to the EML operating conditions. Cascaded outages often result in power system islanding followed by a blackout and therefore considered as a severe disturbance. Maintaining the observability of each island may help in taking proper control actions to preserve the stability of individual islands thus, averting system collapse. With this intent, a strategy for placement of synchronized measurements, which can be obtained from phasor measurement units (PMU), has been proposed in this paper to keep the system observable during cascaded outages also. Since, all the cascaded failures may not lead to islanding situations, therefore, failures leading to islanding as well as nonislanding situations have been considered. A topology based algorithm has been developed to identify the islanding/non-islanding condition created by a particular cascaded event. Additional contingencies such as single line loss and single PMU failure have also been considered after the occurrence of cascaded events. The proposed method is further extended to incorporate the measurement redundancy, which is desirable for a reliable state estimation. The proposed scheme is tested on IEEE 14-bus, IEEE 30-bus and a practical Indian 246-bus networks. Multi-phase systems are the focus of research in recent times due to their inherent advantages compared to the three-phase counterpart. A lot of research effort has been put to develop commercially feasible multi-phase drive systems. There is a necessity to develop a static phase transformation system to obtain multi-phase supply from available three-phase grid. Nowadays the contribution of smart load technologies to power system frequency regulation is spurred due to the increasing penetration of renewable energy resources. This paper presents a comprehensive and up-todate critical review on different decentralized load control strategies. This includes a joint literature- as well as simulation-based investigation in order to scrutinize different decentralized frequency-based load modulation strategies through organizing a taxonomy table and performing different simulation scenarios. Furthermore, the effectiveness of different gain tuning procedures in each control action are scrutinized and compared in terms of frequency nadir and steady state error. State estimation is an integral component of energy management systems used for the monitoring and control of operation of transmission networks worldwide. However, it has so far not yet been widely adopted in the distribution networks due to their passive nature with no active generation. But this scenario is challenged by the integration of distributed generators (DGs) at this level. Various static and dynamic state estimators have been researched for the transmission systems. These cannot be directly applied to the distribution systems due to their different philosophy of operation. Thus the performance of these estimators need to be re-evaluated for the distribution systems. This paper presents a computational and statistical performance of famous static estimator such as weighted least squares (WLS) and dynamic state estimators such as extended Kalman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) for electric distribution system. Additionally, an improved-UKF (IUKF) is also proposed which enhances the robustness and numerical stability of the existing UKF algorithm. All the estimators are tested for load variation and bad data for IEEE-30, 33 and 69 bus radial distribution networks using statistical performance metrics such as Maximum Absolute Deviation (MAD), Maximum Absolute Percent Error (MAPE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Overall Performance index (J). In this paper, a new loss allocation method in restructured power systems is proposed. The method is appropriate for active and reactive loss allocations. This method can also be used for allocation in both bilateral and pool-based markets. The basic idea of this method is to calculate the contribution of each transaction on the system losses by deactivating it. The share of each transaction from total active and reactive losses of the network is estimated. Furthermore, we will discuss how the participants would affect the system's loss. Are they supporting the network by reducing the total losses or not? This method is tested on different test systems, but due to space limitation, only the results of proposed method on IEEE 14, 24 and 118-bus test systems are presented and discussed. In this research paper, the shunt active filter (SHAF) is used to improve the power quality of electrical network by mitigating the harmonics with the help of different control strategies (p-q control strategy, Id-Iq control strategy, PHC control strategy) for three phase three wire system. It is quite difficult to optimize the performance of power system networks using conventional methods, because of complex nature of the systems that are highly non-linear and non-stationary. Three phase reference current waveforms generated by the proposed schemes are tracked by three phase voltage source converter in a hysteresis band control scheme. The performance of proposed control strategies has been evaluated in terms of harmonic mitigation and DC link voltage regulation under various source voltage conditions. The proposed SHAF with different control strategies is able to eliminate uncertainty in the system and SHAF gains outstanding compensation abilities. Transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) is an important and computationally very demanding problem in power system. Many computational approaches have been proposed to handle TNEP in the past. The problem is mixed integer, large scale and its complexity increases exponentially with the size of the system. Metaheuristic techniques have gained a lot of importance in last few years to solve the power system optimization problems, due to their ability to handle complex optimization functions and constraints. Many of them have been successfully applied for TNEP. The biggest challenge in these techniques is the requirement of large computational efforts. This paper uses a two-stage solution process to solve the TNEP problems. The first stage uses compensation based method to generate a quick, suboptimal solution. The valuable information contained in this solution is used to generate a set of heuristics aimed at drastically reducing the number of population for fitness evaluations required in the 2nd stage with application of metaheuristic method. The resulting hybrid approach produces very good quality solutions very efficiently. The growing penetration levels of passive and rectifier interfaced active loads can cause instability in an islanded inverter based microgrid. This may be due to the dynamics associated with passive loads and interaction between the control loops of active loads and inverter-interfaced DGs. This paper proposes a decentralized supplementary control loop around each inverter-interfaced distributed generation (DG) unit to mitigate the instability caused by both the active as well as passive loads. The proposed control loop is based on a robust linear quadratic regulator with prescribed degree-of-stability (LQRPDS). In order to obtain the optimal values of the state and control weighting matrices of LQRPDS, a bi-objective optimization problem has been formulated and solved using a fast and elitist multi-objective non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). The proposed decentralized supplementary control loop does not interfere with the steady state performance and provides robust control performance under various load configurations as well as step load disturbances. Undervoltage load shedding serves to maintain voltage stability when a majority of loads are fast acting. An undervoltage load shedding scheme should address two tasks: the detection of voltage instability following a large disturbance and the determination of the amount of load to be shed. Additionally, in case of short-term voltage instability, the scheme should be fast. This paper proposes a method to predict voltage instability arising due to a large disturbance. The amount of load to be shed to maintain voltage stability is then determined from the Thevenin equivalent of the network as seen from the local bus. The proposed method uses local measurements of bus voltage and power, and does not require knowledge of the network. The method is validated by simulation of three test systems subjected to a large disturbance. The proposed scheme is fairly accurate in estimating the minimum amount of load to be shed to maintain stability. Applying the method of path searching based on distribution network topology in setting software has a good effect, and the path searching method containing DG power source is also applicable to the automatic generation and division of planned islands after the fault. This paper applies path searching algorithm in the automatic division of planned islands after faults: starting from the switch of fault isolation, ending in each power source, and according to the line load that the searching path traverses and the load integrated by important optimized searching path, forming optimized division scheme of planned islands that uses each DG as power source and is balanced to local important load. In developing countries, a high rate of growth in the demand for electric energy is felt, and so the addition of new generating units becomes inevitable. In deregulated power systems, private generating stations are encouraged to add new generations. Some of the factors considered while placing a new generating unit are: availability of resources, ease of transmitting power, distance from the load centre, etc. Finding the most appropriate locations for generation expansion can be done by running repeated power flows and carrying system studies like analyzing the voltage profile, voltage stability, loss analysis, etc. In this paper a new methodology is proposed which will mainly consider the existing network topology. A concept of T-index is introduced in this paper, which considers the electrical distances between generator and load nodes. This index is used for ranking the most significant new generation expansion locations and also indicates the amount of permissible generations that can be installed at these new locations. This concept facilitates for the medium and long term planning of power generation expansions within the available transmission corridors. This paper proposes a control strategy for important transients of a single-stage, three-phase, PV system that is connected to a distribution network. The proposed control strategy adopts an inner current-control loop and an outer DC-link voltage control loop. The current-control mechanism renders the PV system protected against external faults, enables control of the DC-link voltage and, therefore, controls/maximizes the PV system power output. The paper also proposes a feed-forward compensation strategy for the DC-link voltage control loop to mitigate the impact of the nonlinear characteristic of the PV array on the closed-loop stability, and to permit design and optimization of the DC-link voltage controller for a wide range of operating conditions. A mathematical model and a control design methodology are presented for the PV system, and it is shown that under the proposed control, the PV system fulfills the operational requirements of a grid-connected PV system. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy and the most important transients of the PV system are evaluated through simulation studies conducted on a detailed switched model of the PV system in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment. This paper presents an approach for identifying the faulted line section and fault location on transmission systems using support vector machines (SVMs) for diagnosis/post-fault analysis purpose. Power system disturbances are often caused by faults on transmission lines. When fault occurs on a transmission system, the protective relay detects the fault and initiates the tripping operation, which isolates the affected part from the rest of the power system. Based on the fault section identified, rapid and corrective restoration procedures can thus be taken to minimize the power interruption and limit the impact of outage on the system. The approach is particularly important for post-fault diagnosis of any mal-operation of relays following a disturbance in the neighboring line connected to the same substation. This may help in improving the fault monitoring/ diagnosis process, thus assuring secure operation of the power systems. In this paper we compare SVMs with radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN) in data sets corresponding to different faults on a transmission system. Classification and regression accuracy is reported for both strategies. Studies on a practical 24-Bus equivalent EHV transmission system of the Indian Southern region is presented for indicating the improved generalization with the large margin classifiers in enhancing the efficacy of the chosen model. Electrical energy planning of modern electric power system requires great attention for the air pollution problem. This is in accordance to the increasing tendency to optimise the production processes in the respect of their sustainability. Moreover, the advent of the deregulation in the electric energy market has involved substantial modifications of philosophy in planning and managing the electrical power system. These aspects together offer new challenge in defining proper system study methodologies and suitable planning strategies. One of the most complex problems in the planning strategies is the data management uncertainty related to load forecasting and environmental modelling. In this paper a robust optimal planning procedure is formalized, taking adequately into account the problem of stochastic variables presence, allowing to satisfy the air quality and load demand forecast constraints in spite of uncertainties. The proposed approach addresses generation planning, where the various aspects have been integrated to solve the problem in a feasible and realistic way. A numerical application to an electrical power system with respect to a regional area is reported in the final part of the paper, showing the applicability of the proposed methodology. This paper addresses the Energetic Macroscopic Representation EMR, the modelling and the control of photovoltaic panel PVP generation systems for simulation purposes. The model of the PVP considers the variations on irradiance and temperature. A maximum power point tracking MPPT algorithm is considered to control the power converter. A novel EMR is proposed to consider the dynamic model of the PVP with variations in the irradiance and the temperature. The EMR is evaluated through simulations of a PVP generation system. Online dynamic security assessment (DSA) is a computationally intensive task. In order to reduce the amount of computation, screening of contingencies is performed. Screening involves analyzing the contingencies with the system described by a simpler model so that computation requirement is reduced. Screening identifies those contingencies which are sure to not cause instability and hence can be eliminated from further scrutiny. The numerical method and the step size used for screening should be chosen with a compromise between speed and accuracy. This paper proposes use of energy function as a measure of error in the numerical solution used for screening contingencies. This paper aims to evaluate the performance of commercial class A and class S power quality (PQ) instruments when measuring time-varying harmonics. By using a high precision programmable voltage and current source, two meters from different manufacturers are analyzed and compared. Three-phase voltage signals are applied to PQ instruments, considering 3 situations of time-varying harmonic distortions, whose harmonic distortion values are in accordance with typical values found in power systems. This paper proposes the integration scheme and operation of the Unified Power Quality conditioner (UPQC) with Photovoltaic source as distributed generations for power quality improvement. Thus, it provides a novel PVgrid integration configuration and prevents any adverse situation related to current or voltage in power system. This paper introduces an efficient algorithm, multi-objective human learning optimization method (MOHLO), to solve AC/DC multi-objective optimal power flow problem (MOPF). Firstly, the model of AC/DC MOPF including wind farms is constructed, where includes three objective functions, operating cost, power loss, and pollutant emission. Combining the non-dominated sorting technique and the crowding distance index, the MOHLO method can be derived, which involves individual learning operator, social learning operator, random exploration learning operator and adaptive strategies. Both the proposed MOHLO method and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGAII) are tested on an improved IEEE 30-bus AC/DC hybrid system. Simulation results show that MOHLO method has excellent search efficiency and the powerful ability of searching optimal. Above all, MOHLO method can obtain more complete pareto front than that by NSGAII method. However, how to choose the optimal solution from pareto front depends mainly on the decision makers who stand from the economic point of view or from the energy saving and emission reduction point of view. This paper presents a novel intelligent energy management system (IEMS) for a DC microgrid connected to the public utility (PU), photovoltaic (PV) and multibattery bank (BB). The control objectives of the proposed IEMS system are: (i) to ensure the load sharing (according to the source capacity) among sources, (ii) to reduce the power loss (high efficient) in the system, and (iii) to enhance the system reliability and power quality. The proposed IEMS is novel because it follows the ideal characteristics of the battery (with some assumptions) for the power sharing and the selection of the closest source to minimize the power losses. The IEMS allows continuous and accurate monitoring with intelligent control of distribution system operations such as battery bank energy storage (BBES) system, PV system and customer utilization of electric power. The proposed IEMS gives the better operational performance for operating conditions in terms of load sharing, loss minimization, and reliability enhancement of the DC microgrid. In this paper, a new heuristic algorithm is proposed for the optimum voltage control, which is applicable for the large Radial Distribution Systems (RDSs). In the RDSs, voltage levels at different buses can be maintained within the specified limits using the conductor grading or placing the Voltage Regulators (VRs) and capacitors at suitable locations. The proposed Back Tracking Algorithm (BTA) proposes the optimal location, number and tap positions of VRs to maintain the voltage profile within the desired limits and decreases losses in the system, which in turn maximizes the net savings in the operation of distribution system. In addition to BTA, an approach using the fuzzy logic called Fuzzy Expert System (FES) is also proposed, and the results of FES are compared with the results of BTA. This heuristic algorithm proposes the optimal location and tap setting of VRs, which contributes a smooth voltage profile along the network. It also used to access the minimum number of initially considered VRs, by moving them in such way as to control the network voltage at minimum possible cost. It is concluded that the FES also gives the optimal placement and the number along with the tap settings of VRs. The proposed FES contributes good voltage regulation, and decreases the power loss which in turn increases the net savings when compared to the BTA. This paper presents the control of IPMSM drive in flux weakening region, for high speed applications. An adaptive hysteresis band current controller has been designed and implemented in this work to overcome the drawbacks which are present in case of conventional hysteresis band current controllers such as: high torque ripple, more current error, large variation in switching frequency etc. The proposed current controller is a hysteresis controller in which the hysteresis band is programmed as a function of variation of motor speed and load current. Any variation in those parameters causes an appropriate change in the band which in turns reduces the torque ripple as well as current error of the machine. The proposed scheme is modeled and tested in the MATLAB-Simulink environment for the effectiveness of the study. Owing to the technological development of natural gas exploration and the increasing penetration of gas-fired power generation, gas and power systems inevitably interact with each other from both physical and economic points of view. In order to effectively assess the two systems' interdependency, this paper proposes a systematic modeling framework and constructs simulation platforms for coupled gas and power systems in an energy market environment. By applying the proposed approach to the Australian national electricity market (NEM) and gas market, the impacts of six types of market and system factors are quantitatively analyzed, including power transmission limits, gas pipeline contingencies, gas pipeline flow constraints, carbon emission constraints, power load variations, and non-electric gas load variations. The important interdependency and infrastructure weakness for the two systems are well studied and identified. Our work provides a quantitative basis for grid operators and policy makers to support and guide operation and investment decisions for electric power and natural gas industries. In recent years, the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) inspection for the electrical line has received increasing attentions due to the advantages of low costs, easiness to control and flexibility. The UAV can inspect the electrical tower independently and automatically by planning the flight path. But during the inspection along the path, the UAV is easily impacted by gust wind due to its light weight and small size, which always leads to the crash into the electrical tower. Thus, in this paper, a safe flight approach (SFA) is proposed to make the flight be safer during the inspection. The main contributions include: firstly, the piecewise linear interpolation method is proposed to fit the distribution curve of the electrical towers based on the GPS coordinates of the electrical towers; secondly, the no-fly zone on the both sides of the distribution curve are created, and a security distance formula (SDF) is raised to decide the width of the no-fly zone; thirdly, a gust wind formula (GWF) is proposed to improve the artificial potential field approach, which can contribute to the path planning of the UAV; finally, a flight path of the UAV can be planned using the SFA to make the UAV avoid colliding with the electric tower. Distribution systems are traditionally designed as radial passive systems fed from a single source. Protection coordination of such systems has been easily established assuming the system radiality. Insertion of distributed generators (DGs) into distribution systems makes the distribution system to be more active which causes redistribution of fault currents magnitudes and directions. This causes negative impacts on the original protection system coordination, since the distribution system losses its radiality and passiveness. This paper presents an experimental study on detection and diagnosis of broken rotor bars in Squirrel Cage Induction Motor (SQIM). The proposed scheme is based on Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) which uses amplitude difference of supply frequency to upper and lower side bands. Initially traditional MCSA has been used for rotor fault detection. It provides rotor health index on full load conditions. However in real practice if a fault occurs motor can not run at full load. To overcome the issue of reduced load condition a Fuzzy Logic based MCSA has been designed, implemented, tested and compared with traditional MCSA. A simulation result shows that proposed scheme is not only capable of detecting the severity of rotor fault but also provides remarkable performance at reduced load conditions. The paper presents an on-line sequential extreme learning machine (OS-ELM) based fast and accurate adaptive distance relaying scheme (ADRS) for transmission line protection. The proposed method develops an adaptive relay characteristics suitable to the changes in the physical conditions of the power systems. This can efficiently update the trained model on-line by partial training on the new data to reduce the model updating time whenever a new special case occurs. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated on simulation platform for test system with two terminal parallel transmission lines with complex mutual coupling. A blackout can take place in entire power system or a part of the system due to extreme voltage instability (voltage collapse) that can appear abruptly. Instability prediction and continuous monitoring of the power system performance is, therefore, known exigent. This paper is conducted with a broad overview of the voltage stability indices, which are previously studied in the literature, and have the same foundation during their formulation. Afterward, an improved voltage stability indicator is introduced as a result of the multi-criteria integration and enhancement of the original indices by employing linear algebra methods. It is found that the proposed algorithm can overcome on the probable limitations from calculating point view. Then comparative analysis of the indices is presented in order to reach a unique consensus about the typical techniques of modal analysis (sensitivity, eigenvalue, right eigenvectors, and bus participation factor) as a precise algorithm. Finally, the IEEE 14-bus, and 30-bus test systems are selected to verify the algorithm, and compare the performance of the improved indicator approach with the existing indices. Underfrequency load shedding (UFLS) is a common practice to protect a power system during large generation deficit. The adaptive UFLS schemes proposed in the literature have the drawbacks such as requirement of transmission of local frequency measurements to a central location and knowledge of system parameters, such as inertia constant H and load damping constant D. In this paper, a UFLS scheme that uses only the local frequency measurements is proposed. The proposed method does not require prior knowledge of H and D. The scheme is developed for power systems with and without spinning reserve. The proposed scheme requires frequency measurements free from the oscillations at the swing mode frequencies. Use of an elliptic low pass filter to remove these oscillations is proposed. The scheme is tested on a 2 generator system and the 10 generator New England system. The paper's aim is to explore both active and reactive power losses minimization and voltage stability by a decentralized strategy. The approach assumes that the grid is split into sub-systems; each sub-system is in charge of its own optimal solution using equivalents for the neighbors, so that information exchange is not required. Schedule interchanges among sub-systems have been added as constraints into the optimal formulation. Once the individual solutions are available, the corresponding settings are allocated to the corresponding equipment and a full power flow study is carried out to assure the steady-state preservation. Distance relay design is equipped with out-of-step tripping scheme to ensure correct distance relay operation during power swing. The out-of-step condition is a consequence result from unstable power swing. It requires proper detection of power swing to initiate a tripping signal followed by separation of unstable part from the entire power system. The distinguishing process of unstable swing from stable swing poses a challenging task. This paper presents an intelligent approach to detect power swing based on S-Transform signal processing tool. The proposed scheme is based on the use of S-Transform feature of active power at the distance relay measurement point. It is demonstrated that the proposed scheme is able to detect and discriminate the unstable swing from stable swing occurring in the system. To ascertain validity of the proposed scheme, simulations were carried out with the IEEE 39 bus system and its performance has been compared with the wavelet transform-based power swing detection scheme. This paper employs the generalized lambda distribution (GLD) to model random variables with various probability distributions in power system. In the context of the probability weighted moment (PWM), an optimization-free method is developed to assess the parameters of GLD. By equating the first four PWMs of GLD with those of the target random variable, a polynomial equation with one unknown is derived to solve for the parameters of GLD. When employing GLD to model correlated multivariate random variables, a method of accommodating the dependency is put forward. Finally, three examples are worked to demonstrate the proposed method. Multilevel inverters are emerging as a new breed of power converter options for power system applications. Recent advances in power switching devices enabled the suitability of multilevel inverters for high voltage and high power applications because they are connecting several devices in series without the need of component matching. Usually, a transformerless battery energy storage system, based on a cascaded multilevel inverter, is used as a measure for voltage and frequency deviations. System can be reduced in size, weight, and cost of energy storage system. High-frequency link circuit topology is advantageous in realizing compact and light-weight power converters for uninterruptible power supply systems, new energy systems using photovoltaic-cells, fuel-cells and so on. This paper presents a DC-DC type high-frequency link DC (HFLDC) cascaded multilevel inverter. Each converter cell is implemented a control strategy for two H-bridge inverters that are controlled with the same multicarrier pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. The proposed cascaded multilevel inverter generates lower voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) in comparison with conventional cascaded multilevel inverter. This paper presents an intelligent approach to evaluate switching overvoltages during power equipment energization. Switching action is one of the most important issues in power system restoration schemes. This action may lead to overvoltages that can damage some equipment and delay power system restoration. In this work, transient overvoltages caused by power equipment energization are analyzed and estimated using artificial neural network (ANN)-based approach. Three learning algorithms, delta-bar-delta (DBD), extended delta-bar-delta (EDBD), and directed random search (DRS), were used to train the ANNs. In the cases of transformer and shunt reactor energization, ANNs are trained with the worst case scenario of switching angle and remanent flux which reduce the number of required simulations for training ANN. Also, for achieving good generalization capability for developed ANN, equivalent parameters of the network are used as ANN inputs. The simulated results for a partial of 39-bus New England test system, show that the proposed technique can estimate the peak values and duration of switching overvoltages with good accuracy and EDBD algorithm presents best performance. Overvoltages caused by switching operation of power system equipments might damage some equipment and delay power system restoration. This paper presents a comparison between transmission line (TL) models for overvoltages study and investigates which TL model is most proper for every case study. Both simulation time and accuracy factors of TL models are considered for selecting best TL model. The aim of this paper is to present an algorithm for analysing the actual spatial characterization of the dynamic responses of frequencies for large-scale power system. Based on the distribution feature of disturbance power, the measure of interaction (MI) is employed to analyse and quantify the strength of connection among the busses and generation units. The MI takes into account the interconnection constraints among network structure and parameters. In particular, only the network parameters are used in the proposed structural partition procedure. Case Studies carried out on the IEEE 68-bus system are presented to demonstrate the application and effectiveness of the technique developed. Investigations show that the spatial characterization of the dynamic responses of frequencies can be accurately obtained with the procedure, independent of fault location and the size of disturbance, since the proposed technique is based on the structural feature of the system.
