Steel-coped beams are used in industrial structures to accommodate a cluster of water mains, fire hydrants, power cables and telecommunication wires. The coped regions restrict the ultimate capacity and cause unfavorable failure modes. The current study investigates the structural assessment of the coped section in offshore topsides while their use enhances operational safety for drilling and production. The structural evaluation is done through 2D digital image correlation (DIC) experiments to quantify the influence of various cope geometries. The DIC technique illustrated the strain and deformation measurements under different loading conditions for different coped geometry. The primary failure mode observed in local web buckling is characterized by noticeable lateral displacement and the development of buckling lines over the coped web. Studies showed the influence of the cope depth on the load-carrying capacity and buckling processes for different cope geometries. The results of the DIC analysis are strongly aligned with experimental data and finite element numerical results, suggesting this technique to the structural assessment of coped section. In this paper, the vibration and buckling behavior of a functionally graded piezoelectric porous cylindrical microshell under thermo-electro-mechanical loads are explored on the basis of modified couple stress theory and higher-order shear deformation theory. First, the model of a functionally graded piezoelectric porous cylindrical microshell composed of piezoelectric materials with gradient change in the thickness direction was described. Second, the governing equations of the microshell were derived by Hamilton's principle and Maxwell equation. Third, the modal frequency and buckling equations of the microshell with simply supported ends were obtained on the basis of harmonic trigonometric functions. Finally, the effects of parameters on the modal frequency and buckling behavior were carried out by case studies. The results show that the modal frequency of the microshell can be adjusted by changing the porosity volume fraction, power index, applied voltage, axial load and geometric dimensions. It is also found that the vibration of the microshell is suppressed by positive voltage and axial compression but is strengthened by negative voltage and axial tension, and the material length scale parameter increases stiffness. In addition, the effects of applied voltage and axial load on the buckling behavior are larger than those of temperature. In summer, the high ambient air temperatures and increased solar radiation cause rises in rail temperatures, and rails can experience the buckling. In this study, a thermofluidic analysis was conducted to predict the temperature of a rail. Numerical simulations were performed by changing the orientation of the rails. The south-north rail and the east-west rail was named "0° rail" and "90° rail", respectively. The numerical results from the 0° and 90° rails were validated by comparing them with measured values. Based on this validation, the temperature distribution of a 45° rail was analyzed. The total amount of energies received by the rail were in the order of 0° > 45° > 90°. The results of this study showed that the temperature of a rail can be sufficiently predicted through numerical simulation, and this approach can be used in a forecast to predict a time when buckling might occur. A simple and effective approach based on refined plate theory (RPT) is proposed to study the static and free vibration characteristics of functionally graded CNT-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) plates. Compared to traditional higher order shear deformation theories (HSDTs), the proposed method shows more efficient for FG-CNTRC plates analysis. To solve the C1-continuity requirement of the RPT, we used isogeometric analysis (IGA) to approximate the displacement field, which shows more advantages than the FEA, since it can construct higher-order elements without additional variables. This is an advantage for plate structural analysis because more variables make the calculation cumbersome. The paper investigates the buckling responses of functionally graded material (FGM) plate subjected to uniform, linear, and non-linear in-plane loads. New nonlinear in-plane load models are proposed based on trigonometric and exponential function. Non-dimensional critical buckling loads are evaluated using non-polynomial based higher order shear deformation theory. Navier's method, which assures minimum numerical error, is employed to get an accurate explicit solution. The equilibrium conditions are determined utilizing the principle of virtual displacements and material property are graded in the thickness direction using simple Voigt model or exponential law. The present formulation is accurate and efficient in analyzing the behavior of thin, thick and moderately thick FGM plate for buckling analysis. It is found that with the help of displacement-buckling load curve, critical buckling load can be derived and maximum displacement due to the instability of inplane load can be obtained. Also, the randomness in the values of transverse displacement due to inplane load increases as the extent of uniformity of the load on the plate is disturbed. Furthermore, the parametric varying studies are performed to analyse the effect of span-to-thickness ratio, volume fraction exponent, aspect ratio, the shape parameter for non-uniform inplane load, and non-dimensional load parameter on the non-dimensional deflections, stresses, and critical buckling load for FGM plates. This paper presents an efficient bi-level optimization technique to obtain the optimal stacking sequence for symmetric composite structures. The proposed approach involves two levels of modeling and optimization. The first level of the optimization procedure is used to minimize the weight of the composite structure. At this level, lamination parameters and the number of plies of specified angles (0, ±45 and 90 degree) are design variables, buckling load factor is treated as a constraint, and the weight of the structure is to be minimized using continuous-discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm. Next, at the second level the location of each ply orientation through the thickness (i.e. the layup of the panel) is found. At the second level, optimum stacking sequence is sought to maximize the load bearing capacity of the structure with respect to the buckling. The proposed methodology is applied to two test cases. This paper studies the buckling behavior of simply-simply supported Single-walled Carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with and without defects. The buckling of carbon nanotubes without defects was investigated using the Finite element method (FEM) and analytical treatment and that of carbon nanotubes with defects was studied only by FEM. The carbon nanotubes were modeled as beams and shells. Computations showed that beam elements in the given form provided varying results as shells in their numerical or analytical manner for a small aspect ratio. The defects resulted from the removal of randomly determined carbon atoms and beam elements connected to the nodes. The increasing number of defects decreased the critical buckling force of SWCNTs. The decrease in the critical buckling force was almost the same for SWCNTs with the same diameter but with different chirality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using new approach proposed by Dynamic relaxation (DR) method, buckling analysis of moderately thick Functionally graded (FG) cylindrical panels subjected to axial compression is investigated for various boundary conditions. The mechanical properties of FG panel are assumed to vary continuously along the thickness direction by the simple rule of mixture and Mori-Tanaka model. The incremental form of nonlinear formulations are derived based on First-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and large deflection von Karman equations. The DR method combined with the finite difference discretization technique is employed to solve the incremental form of equilibrium equations. The critical mechanical buckling load is determined based on compressive load-displacement curve by adding the incremental displacements in each load step to the displacements obtained from the previous ones. A detailed parametric study is carried out to investigate the influences of the boundary conditions, rule of mixture, grading index, radius-to-thickness ratio, length-to-radius ratio and panel angle on the mechanical buckling load. The results reveal that with increase of grading index the effect of radius-to-thickness ratio on the buckling load decreases. Effects of thermal stress on the vibration characteristics, buckling limit and critical speed of a rotating pretwisted beam clamped to rigid hub at a stagger angle were investigated. By considering the work done by thermal stress, the thermal influence on stiffness matrix was introduced in the dynamic model. The motion equations were derived based on Lagrange equation by employing three pure Cartesian deformation variables combined with nonlinear von Karman strain formula. Numerical investigations studied the modal characteristics of the beam. Numerical results calculated from a commercial finite element code and obtained with the present modeling method were in good agreement with the previous results reported in the literature. The combined softening effects due to the thermal stress and the rotation motion were observed. Furthermore, it is shown that the inclusion of thermal stress is necessary for blades operating under a high temperature field. Buckling thermal loads and the critical rotating speed were calculated through solving the corresponding nonlinear equations numerically, and some pertinent conclusions are outlined. It is also found that the peak value position of the first mode shape approaches to the tip of blade with the increment of rotating speed and hub radius. Uniformly stretched thin plates do not buckle unless they are in special boundary conditions. However, buckling commonly occurs around discontinuities, such as cracks, cuts, narrow slits, holes, and different openings, of such plates. This study aims to show that buckling can also occur in thin plates that contain no defect or singularity when the stretching is local. This specific stability problem is analyzed with the finite element method. A brief literature review on stretched plates is presented. Linear and nonlinear buckling stress analyses are conducted for a partially stretched rectangular plate, and various load cases are considered to investigate the influence of the partial loading expanse on the critical tensile buckling load. Results are summarized in iso-stress areas, tables and graphs. Local stretching on one end of the plate induces buckling in the thin plate even without geometrical imperfection. The extended Kantorovich method using multi-term displacement functions is applied to the buckling problem of laminated plates with various boundary conditions. The out-of-plane displacement of the buckled plate is written as a series of products of functions of parameter x and functions of parameter y. With known functions in parameter x or parameter y, a set of governing equations and a set of boundary conditions are obtained after applying the variational principle to the total potential energy of the system. The higher order differential equations are then transformed into a set of first-order differential equations and solved for the buckling load and mode. Since the governing equations are first-order differential equations, solutions can be obtained analytically with the out-of-plane displacement written in the form of an exponential function. The solutions from the proposed technique are verified with solutions from the literature and FEM solutions. The bucking loads correspond very well to other available solutions in most of the comparisons. The buckling modes also compare very well with the finite element solutions. The proposed solution technique transforms higher-order differential equations to first-order differential equations, and they are analytically solved for out-of-plane displacement in the form of an exponential function. Buckling analysis of sandwich plate was investigated using layerwise method. The formulation was based on the first-order shear deformation theory, and the Rayleigh-Ritz method was used for approximating and determining the displacement field. The results obtained from layerwise theory was compared with finite element results and showed good agreement. This study demonstrated that layerwise theory could describe buckling behavior of sandwich plates with high accuracy and represents a more realistic and acceptable description of behavior of the plates with much less computational cost. This paper demonstrates the quasi-static axial compression and high-speed axial compression tests of extruded magnesium alloy circular tubes for evaluating the crash and fracture behavior of mg parts. To capture the buckling and fracture behavior of Mg tube during the axial compression tests, FE simulation adopts different types of flow curves depending on the deformation mode such as tension and compression with LS-DYNA software. The Mg tube undergoes compressive plastic strain prior to buckling while according to the model based on Hill yield criterion only bulging along the radial direction is predicted. Due to the tension-compression asymmetry of Mg alloys, diameter of Mg tube expands largely at the initial plastic strain before having bulging or folding while only a bulging mode typical for materials with cubic crystal structure can be predicted. When exploring the buckling mechanism in indium antimonide (InSb) detector, the global square checkerboard buckling pattern reappears in finite element simulation results. The contributions from the three layered materials to the deformations along the Z-direction are systematically analyzed. Analysis of results shows that the buckling deformation originated from the thermal difference between silicon readout integrated circuits (silicon-ROIC) and the intermediate layer directly above. Furthermore, the buckling pattern is determined by indium bumps array. After passing through the 10 μm intermediate layer, the deformation amplitude is significantly reduced from 2.23 μm to 0.24 μm. Afterwards, passing upward through the 10 μm InSb chip, the maximal deformation is further decreased to 0.09 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A numerical study was conducted using the finite element method to determine the effects of square and rectangular cutouts on the buckling behavior of a 16-ply quasi-isotropic graphite/epoxy symmetrically laminated rectangular composite plate. The square/ rectangular cutouts were subjected to uniaxial compression loading. This study addresses the effects of the size of the square/rectangular cutout, orientation of the square/rectangular cutout, plate aspect ratio (a/b), and plate length/thickness ratio (a/t) on the buckling behavior of the symmetrically laminated rectangular composite plate under uniaxial compression loading. Buckling loads were computed for seven different quasi-isotropic laminate configurations [0°/+45°/−45°/90°], [15°/+60°/−30°/−75°], [30°/+75°/−15°/−60°], [45°/+90°/0°/−45°], [60°/−75°/+15°/−30°], [75°/−60°/+30°/−15°], [90°/−45°/+45/°0°]. Results showed that the magnitudes of the buckling loads decrease with increasing cutout positioned angle as well as c/b and d/b ratios for plates with a rectangular cutout. The symmetrically laminated quasi-isotropic [0°/+45°/−45°/90°] composite plate is stronger than all other symmetrically analyzed laminated quasi-isotropic composite plates. The magnitudes of the buckling loads of a rectangular composite plate with square/rectangular cutout decrease with increasing plate aspect ratio (a/b) and plate length/thickness (a/t) ratio. Meshless collocations utilizing Gaussian and Multiquadric radial basis functions for the stability analysis of orthotropic and cross ply laminated composite plates subjected to thermal and mechanical loading are presented. The governing differential equations of plate are based on higher order shear deformation theory considering two different transverse shear stress functions. The plate governing differential equations are discretized using radial basis functions to cast a set of simultaneous equations. The convergence of both radial basis functions is studied for different values of shape parameters. Several numerical examples are undertaken to demonstrate the accuracy of present method and the effects of orthotropy ratio of the material, span to thickness ratio of the plate, and fiber orientation on critical load/temperature are also presented. The small-scale effect on the natural frequencies and buckling of pressurized nanotubes is investigated in this study. Based on the firstorder shear deformable shell theory, the nonlocal theory of elasticity is used to account for the small-scale effect and the governing equations of motion are obtained. Applying modal analysis technique and based on Galerkin's method a procedure is proposed to obtain natural frequencies of vibrations. For the case of nanotubes with simply supported boundary conditions, explicit expressions are obtained which establish the dependency of the natural frequencies and buckling loads of the nanotube on the small-scale parameter and natural frequencies obtained by local continuum mechanics. The obtained solutions generalize the results of nano-bar and -beam models and are verified by the literature. The critical compressive load in the buckling of circular and annular composite plates reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is calculated using finite element method. The developed model is based on the third-order shear deformation theory for moderately thick laminated plates. Effects of CNTs orientation angles and thickness-to-inner radius ratio on the buckling of composite plates are discussed. The results are compared with those obtained by analytical method based on classical plate theory. This paper presents the development of a new prismatic solid-shell finite element, denoted SHB6, obtained using a purely three-dimensional approach. This element has six nodes with displacements as the only degrees of freedom, and only requires two integration points distributed along a preferential direction, designated as the 'thickness'. Although geometrically three-dimensional, this element can be conveniently used to model thin structures while taking into account the various phenomena occurring across the thickness. A reduced integration scheme and specific projections of the strains are introduced, based on the assumed-strain method, in order to improve performance and to eliminate most locking effects. It is first shown that the adopted in-plane reduced integration does not generate 'hourglass' modes, but the resulting SHB6 element exhibits some shear and thickness-type locking. This is common in linear triangular elements, in which the strain is constant. The paper details the formulation of this element and illustrates its capabilities through a set of various benchmark problems commonly used in the literature. In particular, it is shown that this new element plays a useful role as a complement to the SHB8PS hexahedral element, which enables one to mesh arbitrary geometries. Thin shell structures are efficient structures because of their high load-carrying capacity and small weight. Thin plates are one of the common structural elements. Their load-carrying capacity mainly depends on their buckling behavior, which is in turn affected by the imperfections present in them. Dent is one of the common geometrical imperfections in thin shell structures, which may be formed in the plate as an impact of sharp objects, among other reasons. Using ANSYS nonlinear FEA, the present work conducts a numerical study of the effect of various dent parameters on the ultimate strength of a thin plate, with a longitudinal or a transverse dent located centrally on the plate, under uniaxial compressive loading with simply supported boundary conditions. In this paper, the buckling analysis of laminated composite plates reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is carried out using an analytical approach as well as the finite element method. The developed model is based on the classical laminated plate theory (CLPT) and the third-order shear deformation theory for moderately thick laminated plates. The critical buckling loads for the symmetrical layup are determined for different support edges. The Mori-Tanaka method is employed to calculate the effective elastic modulus of composites having aligned oriented straight nanotubes. The effect of the agglomeration of the randomly oriented straight nanotubes on the critical buckling load is also analyzed. The results of analytical solution are compared and verified with the FEM calculations The critical buckling loads obtained by the finite element and the analytical methods for different layup and boundary conditions are in good agreement with each other. In this article, the effects of the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) orientation angle, the edge conditions, and the aspect ratio on the critical buckling load are also demonstrated using both the analytical and finite element methods. A study of buckling and free vibration of rectangular Mindlin plates is presented. The analysis is based on the pseudospectral method, which uses basis functions that satisfy the boundary conditions. The equations of motion are collocated to yield a set of algebraic equations that are solved for the critical buckling load and for the natural frequencies in the presence of the in-plane loads. Numerical examples of rectangular plates with SS-C-SS-C boundary conditions are provided for various aspect ratios and thickness ratios, which show good agreement with those of the classical plate theory when the thickness ratio is very small. The torsional and axially compressed buckling of an individual embedded multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNTs) subjected to an internal and/or external radial pressure was investigated in this study. The emphasis is placed on new physical phenomena which are due to both the small length scale and the surrounding elastic medium. Multiwall carbon nanotubes which are considered in this study are classified into three categories based on the radius to thickness ratio, namely, thin, thick, and almost solid. Explicit formulas are derived for the van der Waals (vdW) interaction between any two layers of an MWNT based on the continuum cylindrical shell model. In most of the previous studies, the vdW interaction between two adjacent layers was considered only and the vdW interaction among other layers was neglected. Moreover, in these works, the vdW interaction coefficient was treated as a constant that was independent of the radii of the tubes. However, in the present model the vdW interaction coefficients are considered to be dependent on the change of interlayer spacing and the radii of the tubes. The effect of the small length scale is also considered in the present formulation. The results show that there is a unique buckling mode ( m,n) corresponding to the critical shear stress. A shape optimization of stiffener was conducted to increase buckling load or failure load with stiffened laminated composite panel of I-type under compression loading. Design variables are cap length, web length, and/or thickness under the constraint of volume constancy. The objective function is buckling load and failure load of post-buckling based on Tsai-Hill theory using ABAQLJS 5.8 for analysis and Optimizer on Broydon-Fletcher Goldfarb-Sharno Method and Augmented Lagrange Multiplier Method. A consistent methodology for the analysis of buckling phenomena in three dimensional solids is presented in this Part I and a straightforward application of this theory to a simple structure will be treated in the forthcoming Part II. The main objective of the work in this Part I is to derive the asymptotic equation from the complicate three dimensional stability equation so that we may obtain the buckling solution in the strained solids analytically and/or numerically very easily.
