Modern plant science research currently integrates biochemistry and molecular biology. This book highlights recent trends in plant biotechnology and molecular genetics, serving as a working manual for scientists in academic, industrial, and federal laboratories. A wide variety of authors have contributed to this book, reflecting the thinking and expertise of active investigators who generate advances in technology. The authors were selected especially for their ability to create and/or implement novel research methods.

We have previously described the syntheses of both magnetic and nonmagnetic polymeric microspheres, and we have reported their application in removal of neuroblastoma cells from normal cells in bone marrow, in the separation of red blood cells, and the separation of human B and T lymphocytes. In the present study, we describe a series of hydrophilic microspheres consisting of (1) poly-HEMA and (2) a copolymer sequence of HEMA-acrolein microspheres.

Ever since the first volume appeared in 1969, this series has received good reviews in a variety of periodicals published in different corners of the world. It would seem that the work has fulfilled its purpose as outlined in the Preface to Volume 1. The rapidly increasing interest in surface and colloid science by people engaged in industrial research and development, and in environmental, ecological, medical, pharmaceutical, and other areas, justifies the continuation of such an effort. The Surface and Colloid Science series originated with John Wiley and Sons and has been continued with Plenum Press. This volume is the third with the present publisher, and is the best assurance of our mutual interest to proceed with this work. Some books in the series, as was the case with Volume 11, may appear under the editorship of other workers in the field. For reasons of continuity, a sequential numbering system will be maintained. This editor hopes to provide the scientific and technical community with high-quality contributions in surface and colloid science in the future. He invites specialists to submit definitive chapters on any topic within the broad area of our discipline for inclusion in this series.

During the past decade, the continued interest in insulin-related growth factors has been documented by a plethora of research programs and publications focused on these growth factors. Both molecular and cellular biological techniques have improved and enabled investigators to study the properties of the growth factors in depth.This volume covers the molecular (genetic) aspects of the growth factors, their binding proteins and receptors, as well as those factors affecting their gene transcription and translation.
