Scientists challenging dominant paradigms are either ignored or attacked by the scientific mainstream. This book, however, contains a selection of scientific papers presented at the two last GIRI meetings (International Research Group on Very Low Dose and High Dilution Effects). The majority of these papers present results performed with succussed high dilutions (homeopathic dilutions), even beyond the Avogrado number. All presented models are classified, and their interpretation is possible either in the mechanistic paradigm or in an information paradigm. This new field of research introduces new scientific concepts which are supported by experimental results. Furthermore, this nascent science is totally concerned with living organisms and, as such, it becomes necessary to define `information'brought by non-molecular high dilutions. eHealth 2008, the First International Conference on Electronic healthcare for the twenty-first century, was held in City University, London, during September 8–9, 2008. The conference was organized as a meeting point for telecare product vendors, policy makers, government ministers, academics, clinicians and all those involved in electronic and mobile health, to examine and to share ideas contributing to the - vancement of electronic healthcare into the twenty-first century. The conference had a huge success with a large number of paper submissions. Ninety-seven papers were submitted, of which 32 were selected for presentation. Each paper was carefully reviewed blindly by a minimum of three referees from the resp- tive field. A special thanks should go to the Technical Program Committee for their hard and efficient work in the review process. In addition to the submitted contributions, the conference included a business pres- tation track with 12 invited talks by key people in the world of eHealth. The business presentation track was chaired by Sir Jonathan Michael (Deputy Director, BT Health). The success of this conference is to be credited to the contribution of many people.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the International Dagstuhl-Seminar on Statistical and Geometrical Approaches to Visual Motion Analysis, held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in July 2008. The workshop focused on critical aspects of motion analysis, including motion segmentation and the modeling of motion patterns. The aim was to gather researchers who are experts in the different motion tasks and in the different techniques used; also involved were experts in the study of human and primate vision. The 15 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from or initiated by the lectures given at the workshop. The papers are organized in topical sections on optical flow and extensions, human motion modeling, biological and statistical approaches, alternative approaches to motion analysis.

Howard Pattee is a physicist who for many years has taken his own path in studying the physics of symbols, which is now a foundation for biosemiotics. By extending von Neumann's logical requirements for self-replication, to the physical requirements of symbolic instruction at the molecular level, he concludes that a form of quantum measurement is necessary for life. He explains why all non-dynamic symbolic and informational controls act as special (allosteric) constraints on dynamical systems. Pattee also points out that symbols do not exist in isolation but in coordinated symbol systems we call languages. Such insights turn out to be necessary to situate biosemiotics as an objective scientific endeavor. By proposing a way to relate quiescent symbolic constraints to dynamics, Pattee's work builds a bridge between physical, biological, and psychological models that are based on dynamical systems theory. Pattee's work awakes new interest in cognitive scientists, where his recognition of the necessary separation—the epistemic cut—between the subject and object provides a basis for a complementary third way of relating the purely symbolic, computational models of cognition and the purely dynamic, non-representational models. This selection of Pattee's papers also addresses several other fields, including hierarchy theory, artificial life, self-organization, complexity theory, and the complementary epistemologies of the physical and biological sciences.

The international multi-topic conference IMTIC 2008 was held in Pakistan during April 11–12, 2008. It was a joint venture between Mehran University, Jamshoro, Sindh and Aalborg University, Esbjerg, Denmark. Apart from the two-day main event, two workshops were also held: the Workshop on Creating Social Semantic Web 2.0 Information Spaces and the Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks. Two hundred participants registered for the main conference from 24 countries and 43 papers were presented; the two workshops had overwhelming support and over 400 delegates registered. IMTIC 2008 served as a platform for international scientists and the engineering community in general, and in particular for local scientists and the engineering c- munity to share and cooperate in various fields of interest. The topics presented had a reasonable balance between theory and practice in multidisciplinary topics. The c- ference also had excellent topics covered by the keynote speeches keeping in view the local requirements, which served as a stimulus for students as well as experienced participants. The Program Committee and various other committees were experts in their areas and each paper went through a double-blind peer review process. The c- ference received 135 submissions of which only 46 papers were selected for presen- tion: an acceptance rate of 34%.

Read the masters! Experience has shown that this is good advice for the serious mathematics student. This book contains a selection of the classical mathematical papers related to fractal geometry. For the convenience of the student or scholar wishing to learn about fractal geometry, nineteen of these papers are collected here in one place. Twelve of the nineteen have been translated into English from German, French, or Russian. In many branches of science, the work of previous generations is of interest only for historical reasons. This is much less so in mathematics.1 Modern-day mathematicians can learn (and even find good ideas) by reading the best of the papers of bygone years.
