In den letzten Jahren sind zahlreiche deutschsprachigen Texte erschienen, die von AutorInnen ost- und südosteuropäischer Herkunft verfasst wurden. Dieses bereits als „Osterweiterung der deutschsprachigen Literatur“ und „eastern turn“ bezeichnete Phänomen zeugt von einer Diversifizierung der Gegenwartsliteratur, die sich mit einem Label wie ‚Migrationsliteratur‘ nicht mehr ausreichend fassen lässt. Gibt es in den entsprechenden Texten spezifische Schreibweisen und Perspektiven und wie ist dies mit deren Rezeption vermittelt? Damit stellt sich zugleich aber die Frage nach dem Status einer Herkunftzuweisung wie ‚Osteuropa‘. Der Band versammelt Beiträge, die diese Fragen unter theoretischen Aspekten, im Hinblick auf die Positionierungen der AutorInnen im literarischen Feld und auf Dynamiken des Buchmarkts sowie in einzelnen Fallstudien untersuchen. In the last years numerous German-language texts written by authors of Eastern and Southeastern European origin appeared. This phenomenon, already referred to as the'eastward expansion of German-language literature'and the'eastern turn', indicates a diversification of contemporary literature that can no longer be adequately captured by a label such as “migration literature”. Are there specific writing styles and perspectives in these texts and how is this mediated with their reception? At the same time, however, this raises the question of the status of an attribution of origin such as'Eastern Europe'. This volume brings together contributions that examine these questions in theoretical perspective, with regard to the positioning of authors in the literary field and to book market dynamics, as well as in individual case studies.

Im literarischen Leben ist Kehlmann eine Stimme, die mit ebenso differenzierten wie provokativen Interventionen auf sich aufmerksam macht.In diesem Band wird der Versuch unternommen, Autor und Werk im literarischen Feld der Gegenwart zu verorten. This book constitutes the proceedings of the First International Workshop on Language, Music and Computing, LMAC 2015, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, in April 2015. The 13 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 38 submissions. They were organized in topical sections on music and language in education; corpus studies of language and music; problems of notation; and linguistic studies of music.

'The Paper Age'is the phrase coined by Thomas Carlyle in 1837 to describe the monetary and literary inflation of the French Revolution—an age of mass-produced'Bank-paper'and'Book-paper.'Carlyle's phrase is suggestive because it points to the particular substance—paper—that provides the basis for reflection on the mass media in much popular fiction appearing around the time of his historical essay. Rather than becoming a metaphor, however, paper in some of this fiction seems to display the more complex and elusive character of what Walter Benjamin evocatively calls'the decline of the aura.'The critical perspective elaborated by Benjamin serves as the point of departure for the readings of paper proposed in Paperwork. Kevin McLaughlin argues for a literary-critical approach to the impact of the mass media on literature through a series of detailed interpretations of paper in fiction by Poe, Stevenson, Melville, Dickens, and Hardy. In this fiction, he argues, paper dramatizes the'withdrawal,'as Benjamin puts it, of the'here and now'of the traditional work of art into the dispersing or distracting movement of the mass media. Paperwork seeks to challenge traditional concepts of medium and message that continue to inform studies of print culture and the mass media especially in the wake of industrialized production in the early nineteenth century. It breaks new ground in the exploration of the difference between mass culture and literature and will appeal to cultural historians and literary critics alike.

An der Braut Christi zeigt sich die christliche Revolution: die Umwälzung der herrschenden, gewalttätigen Geschlechter-, Klassen- und Rassenverhältnisse. Wie an keiner anderen Figur lässt sich an ihr die Liebes- und Erkenntnislehre des Christentums illustrieren. Die Brandmarkung der durch sie symbolisierten Lebensform als pervers und hysterisch war Ziel aller Reformatoren von Luther bis Zola. Doch ist die Liebe in der Moderne ohne die Braut Christi nicht zu denken. Als Figur unendlichen Begehrens zeitigt die sponsa eine mystische Liebessprache, eine Brautmystik, die sich über das Mittelalter bis zu Baudelaire und Proust fortschreibt. Die sponsa ist als genuin textuelles Phänomen lesbar, an dem sich Exegese und das Verhältnis von Buchstäblichkeit und Allegorese neu verhandeln lassen. Das Lektüreschicksal der sponsa Christi ist unter den theoretischen Voraussetzungen der neueren Geschichtsforschung zu einem bedeutenden Paradigma geworden. An diesem lassen sich die komplexen Verflechtungen von religions-, kunst- und literaturwissenschaftlichen Aspekten der konfliktbeladenen Ausprägung von Geschlechterdifferenz neu abschätzen und -lesen.

Der Band dokumentiert die Beiträge der 2018 veranstalteten Tagung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für germanistische Edition. Die Kategorie der Aufführung bzw. Performance hat in den Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften in den letzten beiden Dezennien einen großen Wandel erfahren. Nicht nur rückte die Aufführung selbst zunehmend ins Zentrum der Betrachtung der performativen Künste, sondern mehr noch wurden auch die verschiedensten Textsorten auf ihre Performanz hin befragt. Das Verhältnis von ‘Werk'und Aufführung ist dabei in den verschiedenen Disziplinen unterschiedlich gelagert: Während die Aufführung für einen musikalischen Text – und damit die Edition – gleichsam die ‘raison d'être'bildet, stellt sich dieses Verhältnis für einen Dramentext (und dessen Edition) anders dar. Der vorliegende Band untersucht Poetiken des Staunens von der Antike über das Mittelalter bis ins 19. Jahrhundert; die Beiträge verhandeln einschlägige Beispiele der lateinischen, englischen, deutschen, italienischen und französischen Literatur aus narratologischer und dichtungstheoretischer Perspektive.

Robert Musil (1880–1942), der österreichische Autor, der mit dem Roman Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (1930) bekannt wurde, war von Juni 1916 bis zum April 1917 zunächst Redakteur, dann ab Oktober 1916 Schriftleiter der Tiroler Soldaten-Zeitung. Mit diesem Band liegt nun erstmals eine Studie zur Aktivität Musils in der Tiroler Soldaten-Zeitung vor. Die Beiträge in diesem Band versuchen Musils Rolle als Schriftleiter der nationalistischen Artikel der Soldaten-Zeitung unter die Lupe zu nehmen und im Kontext seines publizistischen Werks zur verorten. Eine besondere Rolle spielt dabei die Diskussion der Autorschaft.

Wie wird in autofiktionalen Texten die eigene Lebensgeschichte als utopische Erzählung gestaltet? Der Band widmet sich dieser Frage hinsichtlich der gesellschaftlichen, raumzeitlichen und medialen Dimension der utopischen Autofiktion.Die Utopie-Forschung hat sich schon seit längerer Zeit von idealisierten Zukunftsvisionen verabschiedet und diskutiert Utopie unter anderem als ‚Impuls‘, ‚Methode‘ oder als ein ‚Bewusstsein‘, das sich nicht mit dem bestehenden Sein identifiziert. Hier setzt der Band an und fragt speziell nach dem Utopischen in autofiktionalen Lebensentwürfen.

This volume comprises a selection of papers presented at the first International C- ference on Mathematics and Computation in Music – mcm2007. The conference took place at the Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung PK – National Institute for Music Research in Berlin during May 18–20, 2007 and was jointly organized by the National Institute for Music Research Berlin and the Society of Mathematics and Computation in Music. The papers were selected for the conference by the program committee and classfied into talks and posters. All papers underwent further selection, revision and elaboration for this book publication. The articles cover a research field which is heterogeneous with respect to content, scientific language and methodology. On one hand, this reflects the heterogeneity and richness of the musical subject domain itself. On the other hand, it exemplifies a t- sion which has been explicitly intended by both the organizers and the founders of the society, namely to support the integration of mathematical and computational - proaches to music theory, composition, analysis and performance. The subdivision into three parts reflects the original structure of the program. These parts are opened by invited papers and followed by talks and posters.

In den literaturwissenschaftlichen Debatten über den Begriff der ‚politischen Literatur‘ dominierte bislang eine oftmals polemische Entgegensetzung von ‚ästhetischer Autonomie‘ und ‚Engagement‘, von ‚reiner Kunst‘ und ‚Tendenzliteratur‘, von Poesie und Politik. Dieser Band nimmt das lange vernachlässigte Thema wieder auf und zeigt, dass eine dichotomisierende Konzeption des Gegenstands nicht weiterführt und letztlich nicht haltbar ist. Die Beiträge zielen auf eine systematische Revision des Begriffs ‚politische Literatur‘, seiner poetologischen Konzeptionierungen und literaturwissenschaftlichen Modellierungen. Das Politische wird als Reflexionsraum der Literatur unter drei verschiedenen Perspektiven betrachtet: „Poetik und theoretische Reflexionen“, „Positionierungen im Feld des Politischen und Referenzbezüge“ sowie „Ästhetische Verfahren und Schreibweisen“. In Verbindung mit systematischen Zugängen werden literarische Fallbeispiele analysiert. Das historische Spektrum reicht von der Sattelzeit bis in die Gegenwart.

Originally published in 1973, the chapters in this volume tackle a wide range of problems arising from this process of modernization. The first section looks at the discussion of ideas and theories about administration in the nineteenth century, when some organizational ideology became firmly-rooted and went unquestioned for many years. These chapters also examine the inevitable questions of reform and major reorganization which later arose in the United States, Britain and elsewhere.The second section moves on from the theory and practice of administrative structures to some consideration of practical problems within organizations, problems of personnel and administrative method. Management questions of staff conditions and careers and job differentiation are examined, and the Fulton report on reform in such areas is discussed.The final group of chapters looks at a variety of substantive issues such as defence and civil-military relations, the advent of independence from colonial government, development policies and development administration. Two major themes emerge. One concerns the extent to which administrative organizations are instruments to be used or institutions which exercise an almost autonomous control over our lives; to what extent is public policy translated into real terms by the institutions concerned? The second theme is concerned with the impact of institution on people, both in terms of broad policy and programmes and in practical, day-to-day communication across the counter between rank-and-file bureaucrat and the ordinary citizen.

Interpretation, Relativism, and Identity: Essays on the Philosophy of Michael Krausz addresses three major philosophical themes: interpretation, relativism, and identity. It does so by focusing on Krausz's distinctive exploration of the relationship between interpretation and ontology, the varieties of relativism, and the interpretive dimension of identity construction. Throughout the years, Krausz has participated in exchanges between people who embrace opposing views about reality, human selves, and the attachments or detachments between them. In these exchanges, life orientations are at stake as much as conceptual distinctions. The Old Story, with a Difference: Pickwick's Vision explores in radically different ways from most approaches to nineteenth-century studies the tropes and metaphors of vision in Dickens'first novel, The Pickwick Papers. Julian Wolfreys provides a close reading of Dickens'Pickwick Papers and argues that this novel is an exemplary text for the re-consideration of concepts such as literature, history, the novel, and the whole notion of Victorian studies. True to the purpose of the Victorian Critical Interventions Series, Wolfreys challenges scholars to rethink the use of a canonical text in Victorian literature. Challenging the commonplaces of historicist criticism, and demonstrating the need for a return to close reading, The Old Story, with a Difference presents a reading of the novel grounded in the twinned rigors of materialist historiography and theoretical inflections tending toward attentiveness to epistemological and linguistic concerns. Through such an orientation, Wolfreys unpacks the relation between the tropes of visuality and matters of memory, history, and the necessity of fiction to bear witness to the cultures, past and present, from which literature becomes generated and which it mediates. In doing so, he situates an argument for rethinking Dickens'novel as the inaugural novel of Victorian fiction par excellence, in that novel's efforts to remain open to the traces of the past in particular ways. The Old Story, with a Difference holds profound implications for the study not only of Dickens'works but Victorian literature and culture in general. Provocative and inventive, this ambitious analysis will challenge, goad, and invite the reader to return to acts of materialist reading informed by ethical and ideological urgency, rather than relapsing into the commonplaces of humanist cliché.

I was invited to join the Organizing Committee of the First International Conference on Complex Sciences: Theory and Applications (Complex 2009) as its ninth member. At that moment, eight distinguished colleagues, General Co-chairs Eugene Stanley and Gaoxi Xiao, Technical Co-chairs János Kertész and Bing-Hong Wang, Local Co-chairs Hengshan Wang and Hong-An Che, Publicity Team Shi Xiao and Yubo Wang, had spent hundreds of hours pushing the conference half way to its birth. Ever since then, I have been amazed to see hundreds of papers flooding in, reviewed and commented on by the TPC members. The book is divided in four main chapters which reflect the high quality of the sessions of CMMR 2011, the collaboration with FRSM 2011 and the Indian influence, in the topics of Indian Music, Music Information Retrieval, Sound analysis synthesis and perception and Speech processing of Indian languages.

'Late style'is a critical term routinely deployed to characterise the work of selected authors, composers, and creative artists as they enter their last phase of production--often, but not only, in old age. Taken at face value, this terminology merely points to a chronological division in the artist's oeuvre,'late'being the antonym of'early'or the third term in the triad'early-middle-late'. However, almost from its inception, the idea of late style or late work has been freighted with aesthetic associations and expectations that promote it as a special episode in the artist's creative life. Late style is often characterised as the imaginative response made by exceptional talents to the imminence of their death. In their confrontation with death creative artists, critics claim, produce work that is by turns a determination to continue while strength remains, a summation of their life's work and a radical vision of the essence of their craft. And because this creative phenomenon is understood as primarily an existential response to a common fate, so late style is understood as something that transcends the particularities of place, time and medium. Critics seeking to understand late work regularly invoke the examples of Titian, Goethe, and Beethoven as exemplars of what constitutes late work, proposing that something unites the late style of authors, composers, and creative artists who otherwise would not be bracketed together and that lateness per se is a special order of creative work. The essays in this collection resist this position. Ranging across literature, the visual arts, music, and scientific work, the material assembled here looks closely at the material, biographical and other contexts in which the work was produced and seeks both to question the assumptions surrounding late style and to prompt a more critical understanding of the last works of writers, artists and composers.

Because print publishing was often neither possible nor desirable for women in the early modern period, in order to understand the range of writing by women and indeed women's literary history itself, it is important that scholars consider women's writing in manuscript. Since the body of critical studies on women's writing for the most part prioritizes print over manuscript, this essay collection provides an essential corrective. The essays in this volume discuss many of the ways in which women participated in early modern manuscript culture. The manuscripts studied by the contributors originated in a wide range of different milieux, including the royal Court, the universities, gentry and aristocratic households in England and Ireland, and French convents. Their contents are similarly varied: original and transcribed secular and devotional verse, religious meditations, letters, moral precepts in French and English, and recipes are among the genres represented. Emphasizing the manuscripts'social, political and religious contexts, the contributors challenge commonly held notions about women's writing in English in the early modern period, and bring to light many women whose work has not been considered before.

Taking the position of ‘a Philistine', Spender argues against the ‘new'art and fiction and encourages the average member of the public to state their opinion and give validation that the average view is just as worthy as the ‘new'criticism which tended toward superiority. In recent years the twin themes of travel and translation have come to be regarded as particularly significant to the study of early modern culture and literature. Traditional notions of'The Renaissance'have always emphasised the importance of the influence of continental, as well as classical, literature on English writers of the period; and over the past twenty years or so this emphasis has been deepened by the use of more complicated and sophisticated theories of literary and cultural intertextuality, as well as broadened to cover areas such as religious and political relations, trade and traffic, and the larger formations of colonialism and imperialism. The essays collected here address the full range of traditional and contemporary issues, providing new light on canonical authors from More to Shakespeare, and also directing critical attention to many unfamiliar texts which need to be better known for our fuller understanding of sixteenth-century English literature. This volume makes a very particular contribution to current thinking on Anglo-continental literary relations in the sixteenth century. Maintaining a breadth and balance of concerns and approaches, Travels and Translations in the Sixteenth Century represents the academic throughout Europe: essays are contributed by scholars working in Hungary, Greece, Italy, and France, as well as in the UK. Für diese linearen Fortschrittsthesen fehlen jedoch weitgehend empirische Studien, welche die Ausbreitung des Papiergebrauchs in geographischer wie in sozialer Hinsicht nachvollziehen. The imaginary as a critical concept originated in the twentieth century and has been theorized in diverse ways. It can be understood as a register of thought; the way we interpret the world; the universe of images, signs, texts, and objects of thought. In this volume, it is explored as it manifests itself in encounters between the verbal and the visual. A number of the essays brought together here explore the transposition of the imaginary in illustrations of texts and verbal renditions of images, as well as in comic books based on paintings or on verbal narratives. Others analyze ways in which books deal with film or television and investigate the imaginary in digital media. Special attention is paid to the imaginary of places and the relationship of the imaginary with memory. Written in English and French, these contributions by European and American scholars demonstrate the various concerns and approaches characteristic of contemporary scholarship in word and image studies.

This collection of thirteen essays examines sixteenth-century type design in France. Typefaces developed during this period were to influence decisively the typography of the centuries which followed, and they continue to influence a great many contemporary typefaces. The papers'common goal is to establish the paternity of the typefaces described and critically to appraise their attributions, many of which have previously been inadequately ascribed. Such an approach will be of interest to type historians and type designers seeking better-documented attributions, and to historians, philologists, and bibliographers, whose study of historical imprints will benefit from more accurate type descriptions. The papers and illustrations focus on the most important letter-cutters of the French Renaissance, including Simon de Colines, Robert Estienne, Claude Garamont, Robert Granjon, Pierre Haultin, and also include a number of minor masters of the period.

We present in this volume a collection of revised selected papers from the ISCA Tutorial and Research Workshop on Nonlinear Speech Processing (NO- LISP 2007)held in Paris,France, 22–25May,2007.NOLISP 2007was organized by the University Pierre and Marie Curie (UPMC) with the generous support of ISCA (International Speech Communication Association), EURASIP and the IEEE. NOLISP 2007 was the?rst follow-on workshop to a series of three e- lier events related to nonlinear speech processing, that were organized within the framework of the European COST action 277 Nonlinear speech processing (2001–2005). The?nancial support of ISCA enabled the attendance of leading researchers from various parts of the world. Theexciting?eldofspeechprocessinghaswitnessedtremendousdevelopment over the past 20 years or so, thanks to both technological progress and to the growing focus of research on a number of key application areas. However, some speci?cities of the speech signal are still not well addressed by the currently availablemodels. Hence, new nonconventionalmodels and processing techniques needtobeinvestigatedinordertofosterand/oraccompanyfutureprogress,even if they do not match immediately the level of performance and understanding of the current state-of-the-art approaches. ThepurposeofNOLISPistopresentanddiscussnovelideas,workandresults related to such alternative techniques for speech processing, which depart from mainstream approaches. It declared its intent to be an interdisciplinary forum, intertwining research in di?erent?elds of speech processing with its growing applications in everyday practice.

'Early in the twentieth century, Yiddish, previously stigmatized as a corrupt jargon, came to be recognized as a language in its own right, and one moreover that was already the vehicle for a rich literature. Many writers in other European languages steadily became aware of the status and richness of the Yiddish language, sometimes by encountering Yiddish-speaking communities in Eastern Europe, and they responded to Yiddish language and culture in their own works, while Yiddish writers adopted, and sometimes anticipated, modern trends in other European literatures known to them. Communication was without a doubt a lever of the conquest of the human race over the rest of the animate world. There is little doubt that the human racebegan when our predecessorsstarted to communicate with each other using language.This highly abstractmeans of communicationwas probably one of the major factors contributing to the evolutionary success of the human race within the animal world. Physically weak and imperfect, humans started to dominate the rest of the world through the creation of communication-based societies where individuals communicated initially to satisfy immediate needs, and then to create, accumulate and process knowledge for future use. The crucial step in the history of humanity was the invention of writing. It is worth noting that writing is a human invention, not a phenomenon resulting from natural evolution. Humans invented writing as a technique for recording speech as well as for storing and facilitating the dissemination of knowledge across the world. Humans continue to be born illiterate, and therefore teaching and conscious supervised learning is necessary to maintain this basic social skill.

Computing in context has become a necessity in modern and intelligent IT - plications. With the use of mobile devices and current research on ubiquitous computing, context-awareness has become a major issue. However, context and context-awareness are crucial not only for mobile and ubiquitous computing. They are also vital for spanning various application areas, such as collaborative softwareand Web engineering,personaldigital assistantsand peer-to-peer inf- mation sharing, health care work?ow and patient control, and adaptive games and e-learning solutions. In these areas, context serves as a major source for reasoning, decision making, and adaptation, as it covers not only application knowledge but also environmental knowledge.Likewise, modeling and retrieving context is an important part of modern knowledge management processes. In addition, context can play a role in determining what information a s- tem should provide. This is important for supporting the users of automated or intelligent systems, for tasks such as explaining how solutions are found, what the system is doing, and why it operates in a certain way. The methods applied and the advice given have to be explained, so that the user can understand the process and agree on decisions. Context is equally important for deciding when to provide uncertain or blurred information, e.g., when using a tracking system in situations for which either revealing the current position, or denying access to it, would have adverse e?ects. In this wide range of applications, context is now more than just location.
