Wieviel Mündlichkeit steckt im Märchen, und mit welchen Mitteln wird Nähesprachlichkeit in Märchentexten des 19. Jahrhunderts inszeniert? Die vorliegende Studie bietet eine bislang unerschlossene Vergleichsebene: Franz Xaver von Schönwerth (1810–1886) sammelte auf den Spuren der Brüder Grimm Märchen und Sagen der Oberpfalz. Sein breitgefächerter Nachlass enthält zahlreiche Originalmanuskripte zu Verschriftungen ausgewählter »Kinder- und Hausmärchen«, wie sie im ländlichen Umfeld mündlich weitergegeben wurden. Zu jeweils einheitlichen Motivkomplexen werden sämtliche Redeszenen in mehreren Textvarianten beider Provenienzen miteinander verglichen. Die jeweiligen Sprechhandlungsmuster verweisen auf die Sprach- und Alltagskultur im bürgerlich-nationalen und bäuerlich-regionalen Kontext. Zudem wird deutlich, dass bestimmte Märchentexte der Brüder Grimm mündlichen Quellen deutlich näher stehen als von der neueren Märchenforschung bis dato angenommen.

Although Mozart's Don Giovanni (1787) is the most analysed of all operas, Lorenzo Da Ponte's libretto has rarely been studied as a work of poetry in its own right. The author argues that the libretto, rather than perpetuating the conservative religious morality implicit in the story of Don Juan, subjects our culture's myth of human sexuality to a critical rewriting. Combining poetic close reading with approaches drawn from linguistics, psychoanalysis, anthropology, political theory, legal history, intellectual history, literary history, art history and theatrical performance analysis, she studies the Don Giovanni libretto as a radical political text of the Late Enlightenment, which has lost none of its ability to provoke. The questions it raises concerning the nature of compassion, seduction and violence, and the autonomy and responsibility of the individual, are still highly relevant for us today.

The border and border-crossing and its significance for the Chicana in a cultural, social, gendered, and spiritual sense are at the core of this book. The three oeuvres selected—Helena Viramontes'The Moths and Other Stories, Ana Castillo's The Mixquiahuala Letters, and Norma Cantú's Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera—are eloquent examples of feminist Chicana writers who refuse to allow their lives to be restricted by the gender, social, racial, and cultural border and who portray how Chicana women rebel against the unfair treatment they receive from their fathers, husbands and lovers. Crossing and deconstructing the man-made borders means to leave behind the known territory and discover an unknown land, in the hope of finding a new world in which Chicana women have the same rights as white women and in which they can realize their self, develop a new mestiza consciousness and liberate themselves from patriarchal constraints and religious beliefs. The author shows how the newly won self-confidence empowers the Chicana to explore the opportunities this freedom offers.

The horses in All the Pretty Horses are ubiquitous but rarely the center of attention. Their depiction is surprisingly authentic and without anthropomorphization. This book illustrates how an equicentric reading offers new insights into the novel's spaces, characters, and relationships. It features comparisons with popular horse-narratives and an equicentric analysis of the novel's gender relations. How does horsemanship redefine masculinity? What is the inherent connection between femininity and the equine? This book answers these questions from an equicentric perspective, while taking into account patterns of anthropocentrism and misogyny. In addition, the focus is on the narratees and on how the degree of equine experience they bring to the narrative may enhance the horses'figurative significance.

Texts, Images, Practices offers multidisciplinary readings of various texts of culture, including social and political phenomena, novels, memoirs, letters and articles in the press, musical, theatrical adaptation and food. The authors draw from a variety of methodologies worked out within cultural and literary studies, among them memory studies, discourse analysis theory, theories of visual design and theories of popular culture, working at the intersection between the textual, the visual and the performative. The meanings and conclusions arising from the chapters included in this collection signal a variety of thematic and theoretical directions that are presently followed in cultural and literary studies in Poland.

The book examines the modalities of witnessing in the works of Charles Reznikoff. Associated with the so-called “Objectivist” group created in New York in the early 1930s, Reznikoff is often called a poet-witness because the material he draws on in his poetry and, to a lesser extent in prose, comes from his observations of urban life and from authentic testimonies he found in archives. Yet, the process of turning eye-witnessed situations and contents of depositions given by other witnesses into literary texts is far from objective. In particular, Reznikoff's use of archival material is informed by subtly camouflaged manipulation. To demonstrate various degrees of this change, the book centers on a comparative juxtaposition of the poet's works with the original documents.

Is the prose poem revolutionary and subversive, or marginal and lyrical? What makes a piece of prose a prose poem? Is its identity vague or precisely defined? Can every poem written in prose be considered a prose poem, a form influenced by the brilliant invention of French literature and by authors such as Baudelaire or Rimbaud? Agnieszka Kluba discusses the prose poem by providing a comprehensive summary of the existing approaches to it, but also by proposing an original conception of this form of writing. Kluba does not limit herself to considerations within literary genre theory and remains close to the poetic texts she considers. Following the intricate line of the prose poem, in Polish and European literature, she carefully assigns to prose poetry a place in Modern literary history.

Assessing the cultural history of the dandy as a figure traditionally gendered masculine, this wide-ranging study advances a critical space for the discussion of the woman dandy. Modernist Women Dandies revisits dandyism to provide an interpretative framework for re-evaluating the literary careers of women authors with atypical literary presence: Edith Sitwell, Nancy Cunard, and Mina Loy. Cutting across media boundaries, it demonstrates how their experimental poetry and portrait photographs feed into each other, fabricating dandy authorial performances that are simultaneously unapologetically feminine and queer. In showing how these authors redefined the interplay between dandyism and authorship, this book makes an important contribution to rethinking modernist literary culture.

Das Buch untersucht die Ehedarstellung in deutscher Literatur der Jahrhundertwende und malischer Literatur von Frauen. Anhand eines gesellschaftstheoretischen Ansatzes und der literarischen Subversions- und Reflexionsmöglichkeiten nimmt der Band im interkulturell geschärften Vergleich eine sozialgeschichtliche und diskurskritische Analyse vor. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, in welchem Maß die ausgewählten Romane als emanzipatorische Werke verstanden werden können und inwiefern die Autorinnen auf die soziokulturellen Bedingungen der Frau verweisen, um die Unterdrückungsmechanismen der männlichen Herrschaft zu entlarven.

This book is a reflection on the Jewish presence in two European capitals, Warsaw and Berlin, in the first half of the 20th century. It was inspired by the works of Polish-Jewish, Yiddish and German-Jewish authors, as well as by the connections between urban spaces and the formation of different varieties of modern Jewish identity. The spotlight is cast on images preserved in literary works, namely those concerning separate Jewish neighborhoods and the sphere of cultural interethnic contacts. By attempting to restore the presence of Jewish inhabitants of both cities, destroyed by the Holocaust, it may become possible to see how the imagined communities of the time were created and preserved in the texts, even if, in reality, the metropolises were transformed into necropolises.

The book focuses on contemporary staff-centred mystery novels set in the academic domain, written by scholars who enrich the generic convention of the detective novel with their academic expertise. The author delineates the academic mystery genre conventions and their connection with the characteristics of both the classical detective novel and the academic (university) novel. The analysis shows that the academic mystery novel not only fills in the classical detective formula with academic discourse, university settings, and the characters and conflicts of academics from different echelons of the university hierarchy but also, and more importantly, refers to and comments upon the current situation of tertiary education.

This book explores how capitalism shapes the formation of the economic subject in modern European writing. How are subject positions determined by the subject's relationship to money and work? How fair is a society that predicates social inclusion upon employment? And what happens when full employment is impossible? The volume traces how literary authors and social theorists have answered these questions in different social and historical contexts from the nineteenth century to the present day. El objetivo de esta investigación consiste en analizar modalidades discursivas tales como ironía y parodia, el funcionamiento narratológico y redes de sentido en novelas del realismo social latinoamericano. El corpus es sometido a un estudio riguroso en que el autor descubre relaciones intertextuales y las clasifica como signos representativos en el marco de una vasta producción a la cual esos textos pertenecen. El estudio se lleva a cabo en base a herramientas de la Pragmática Lingüística y de la Sociocrítica. La lectura general enfatiza la manera en que los narradores construyen sus imaginarios desde voces dialógicas y monológicas. El trabajo describe la riqueza cultural de ciertas sociedades latinoamericanas, tradiciones, conflictos políticos e ideológicos así como también movimientos estudiantiles y obreros que combaten contra sistemas opresivos en el siglo XX. El análisis de los imaginarios sociales se traza como meta última reevaluar la relevancia del género.

Los contextos sociohistóricos y culturales en los que se han desarrollado las distintas variedades de la lengua española –contacto con otras lenguas romances y/o extrarrománicas, situaciones de heterogeneidad lingüística, bilingüismo, diglosias, etc.– han dado lugar a situaciones complejas y dinámicas que resultan de una multitud de factores sociales y lingüísticos cuya influencia es difícil de separar. Es por eso que necesitamos trabajos de campo rigurosos basados en datos de habla natural contextualizados que permitan proponer explicaciones más satisfactorias de los fenómenos de contacto lingüístico. Esta obra reúne a investigadores que intentan mostrar que la finalidad de los cambios inducidos por contacto suele obedecer a estrategias comunicativas que permiten una mejor explotación de los recursos lingüísticos que el hablante bilingüe/plurilingüe tiene a su alcance.

Rosa Maria Assing, Schwester Karl Augusts und Schwägerin Rahel Varnhagens, gehört heute zu den weitgehend vergessenen Autorinnen. Zu Lebzeiten war sie literarisch tätig, in Hamburg führte sie einen literarischen Salon und pflegte einen intensiven Briefwechsel mit zeitgenössischen Schriftstellern und Intellektuellen. Die vorliegende Publikation dokumentiert ihr Leben und Wirken anhand der bislang größtenteils unveröffentlichten Handschriften aus der Sammlung Varnhagen.

Ce que l'Europe a longtemps dit de la Chine, ce que la Chine a plus récemment dit de l'Europe, l'ensemble de discours complexes et contradictoires, les représentations croisées entre l'Europe et la Chine seront au centre de ce livre. El presente volumen pretende analizar ciertos pecados profesionales y sociales en el Renacimiento como método de intelección epocal, al cartografiar la codificación de diversas prácticas desviadas en una selección de libros y géneros coetáneos, a fin de descubrir la conducta real de grupos sociales concretos. Los estudios aquí reunidos observan en qué medida la acumulación de pecados individuales, que puede objetivarse en ciertos ámbitos profesionales –como el gremio de los médicos o los mercaderes– genera cuestiones y problemas que trascienden lo individual para alcanzar categoría social. Voces indígenas, de las disidencias sexuales, homoeróticas, antirracistas y antiimperialistas, subalternas, de poetas y ensayistas mujeres, de la bohemia y las contraculturas, dibujan aquí un mapa alterno que propone otros nombres, otros procesos, e iluminan experiencias que recusan toda homogeneización y cualquier universalismo. Miradas que nos ayudan a apartarnos de la reificación del pasado, recuperando «antiguos saberes rechazados por la historia, saberes marginales que han circulado por circuitos culturales no oficiales».

Ausgewählte Passagen aus Texten griechischer und römischer Autoren führen die Grundgedanken der epikureischen Psychologie und Ethik vor. Deren zentrale Themen waren zum einen die verschiedenen Formen menschlichen Begehrens einschließlich des Sexuellen, zum anderen rationale und irrationale Ängste sowie der vernünftige Umgang mit ihnen. In diesem Zusammenhang entstand auch eine eigene Theorie der Wahrnehmung und Begriffsbildung, des Erkennens und des Handelns. Außerdem entstand eine detaillierte Rekonstruktion der Entwicklung, die die Menschheit in sozialer und technischer Hinsicht durchlaufen haben könnte. Dabei wurde der Herausbildung der menschlichen Sprachfähigkeit eine besonders wichtige Rolle zugewiesen. Das Buch möchte den Systemcharakter dieser Philosophie deutlich machen, soll aber auch der nichtfachlichen Leserschaft durch Neuübersetzungen einen Eindruck von der hohen literarischen Qualität der zum großen Teil dichterischen Quellentexte vermitteln.

The monograph deals with chosen aspects of modern drama based on the output of three playwrights. It discusses the works of Beckett, Pinter and Stoppard in reference to their employment of the grotesque and the theatre of the absurd. Elements of the grotesque appear in political dramas of all three playwrights. While Beckett does not shy away from absurdity in his plays, some of the early dramas of Pinter and Stoppard present a general existential condition of man, even though their strictly political plays are basically realistic in respect to form, yet satirical in their content. Most of the political plays discussed portray the absurdity of totalitarian countries, stemming from the tragicomic discrepancy between what the authorities are saying they are doing and their actual actions.

Nuestra comprensión de la realidad y la relación que mantenemos con ella suelen estar condicionadas por la influencia de las imágenes que los sistemas culturales producen y ponen en circulación. Los discursos que contribuyen a conformar una idea socialmente admitida sobre la diversidad funcional son múltiples y variados, pero no cabe duda del papel definitivo que también desempeñan las artes. El presente volumen reúne una serie de aproximaciones teóricas y prácticas que analizan los usos y la naturaleza de algunas ficciones contemporáneas, y ofrece una novedosa mirada hacia los riesgos y desafíos, así como a las posibilidades y límites estéticos y políticos, que implica la representación de la diversidad funcional en las artes escénicas y audiovisuales, la literatura y el arte sonoro.

The book is devoted to «contraband» literature from the USSR that was first published abroad over the Soviet period. The volume explores tamizdat as a literary practice and political institution from a variety of perspectives and situates it in the context of its domestic counterparts: gosizdat and samizdat. The Contributions to the volume range from first-hand accounts, archival explorations, and close readings of the texts vis-à-vis the histories of their first publications and reception abroad, to theoretical articles on tamizdat as «textual embodiment» and transgression. The volume lets world history speak through Russian literary manuscripts on their way from the drawer to publication abroad, and «repatriation» back to Russia in a printed form.

Human imagination is saturated with monsters. They represent, in a number of ways, those that have been historically perceived as strangers to the human community. It is a game of alterities wherein female monsters have occupied a particularly relevant position. Women have been historically represented as the Other in this human/nonhuman dyad. In the present study nineteenth- and twentieth-century vampires'and zombies'narratives have guided the analysis of a contemporary neo-gothic artefact: Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter by Laurell K. Hamilton. This book argues at the intersection of feminist literary analysis and cultural studies methodology, and it also considers queer notions of fluidity and performativity. The author sets out that Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter represents a twenty-first-century series questioning social norms and envisioning worlds of freedom.

Ellen Key (1849–1926) was one of Europe's most influential thinkers on issues of motherhood and women's sexuality during the early 1900s. This anthology maps how her ideas were reformulated in Europe's five major language areas – English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish – and explores how her ideas about social modernity and women's sexuality were received and how they were communicated in feminist literature and debate during the first decades of the 20th century. The aim of this anthology is to offer new knowledge about Key's influence on European thinking on issues such as motherhood, sexuality, and love in the early 1900s by offering both a broader and deeper understanding of the international significance of Key's work.

Tomasz Garbol's book reconstructs Czesław Miłosz's poetic vision of the world after the Fall. The entry point to this approach is the conviction about the ambivalence of previous interpretations of Miłosz's works, especially about his bipolar poetic worldview (his intellectual and existential division between pessimism and ecstasy) and his understanding of the consequences of the Fall (reversible or fatalistic). The book is a literary studies take on the relationship between literature and religion. The main direction is that Miłosz's main need in art comes from his yearning for contact with the meaning of reality, which he seeks in the activity of poetic imagination.

Failure as a pervasive occurrence in life has rarely been investigated by sociology, even though the collapse of plans, unattainability of goals and breakdown of vital relationships are ordinary experiences. The study of early-21st-century fiction reveals that imaginative literature at present explores the lacunae of failure, disillusionment and collapse as central narrative themes. About fifty years after Samuel Beckett, in whose works the failing of expression became a major concern, postmillennial narratives expose disruption or defeat as subject matter and literary trope. Unheroic failure as a motif makes its variegated appearance in diverse areas of human life such as love, religion, art, and social community. The narratives explore it as the individual's participation in common humanity.

The book deals with the problem of anti-utopian way of thinking in literature, its preconditions, and variations in the 20th century. Moreover, it is a first attempt to read one of the most prominent Georgian texts – Jakho's Dispos-sessed by the Georgian writer Mikheil Javakhishvili – in the context of anti-uto-pian thinking. The book aims to present how relevant 20th century Georgian literature is to this literary trend. Research was conducted in the frame of comparative studies. The book offers a comprehensive analysis of Vladimir Nabokov's Invitation to a Beheading and Bend Sinister, and Jakho's Dispos-sessed by Mikheil Javakhishvili.

The given volume provides insight into the integrated cooperation that was built in the trilateral scientific project'Aggression and Argumentation. Discourses of Conflict and their Linguistic Negotiation'. Presented here are analyses of the relationship of language and power, the interplay of aggression and argumentation, as well as of cooperation and conflict. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict is an important, but not the only starting point for the analytical reflections, that are enriched through research on further conflict situations in Eastern European and (post)socialist areas like former Yugoslavia, the South Caucasus, Poland and the Czech Republic.

The aim of this book is to revisit Ossian, whilst broadening the scope of oral literature and translation to embrace cultural contexts outside of Europe. Epics, ballads, prose tales, ritual and lyric songs, as genres, existed orally before writing was invented. Serious debate about them, at least in modern Western culture, may be said to have begun with James Macpherson and Thomas Percy. Considering the ongoing debate on orality and authenticity in the case of Ossian, this book includes ground-breaking, previously published essays which provide essential information relating to orality, Ossian and translation, but have been frequently overlooked. Its contributions focus on the aspects of authenticity, transmediation, popular poetry and music, examining Scottish, German, Portuguese, Brazilian, African, American Indian, Indian and Chinese literatures.

This volume is co-edited by the director of the Freiburg graduate school'Factual and Fictional Narration'(GRK 1767, Freiburg/Germany) and the director of the Aarhus Centre for Fictionality Studies (University of Aarhus, DK). The collection of essays re-examines the much discussed fact―fiction distinction in light of the current burgeoning of research on fictionality. It provides a forum for ongoing work on fictionality from France, Germany and Denmark and Sweden. By placing discussions of the notion of fictionality in one volume, the editors hope to initiate exchange between the different traditions represented in the essays und to help the task of translating the available concepts and terminologies so they can travel between different models and theoretical frameworks.

Unter anderem werden neue methodische Ansätze und empirische Ergebnisse der Linguistic-Landscape-Forschung vorgestellt sowie graphematische, diskursanalytische, diachron-historische und morphosyntaktische Themen diskutiert.

The book examines the complex lexis of the northwestern and southeastern Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. The author analyzed loanwords which arrived by the influence of those who settled in the Bay (Venetians, Austro-Hungarians, Turks, Spaniards, and French). They were domesticated and spread to the continental part of Montenegro, a fact indicative of the level of linguistic integration. The analysis of the corpus was performed from phonological, morphological, etymological, accentual, phraseological, semantical, onomastic, lexical, and lexicographical perspectives. The principal intent is not only to present the infiltration of loanwords and changes in loans, but also of the variety of linguistic influences in the Bay, as well as to offer a dictionary of the most frequent Latinisms found in the Bay.

Der Band möchte an die Relevanz von Lehrerfiguren für die europäische Literatur seit der Antike am Beispiel der deutschen Literatur erinnern. Seine Beiträge setzen im Mittelalter ein und führen über Frühe Neuzeit und Moderne bis in die Gegenwart. Dabei zeigt sich nicht nur eine Fülle verschiedener Figurationen des Lehrers (die Enden des Spektrums sind mit dem Heiligen Geist auf der einen und dem Teufel auf der anderen Seite markiert, in der Mitte stehen Vögel als animalische Lehrerfiguren), deutlich wird auch, wie unterschiedlich die Gattungszusammenhänge sind, in denen sie auftauchen, und ebenso die Funktionen, die sie haben.
