The book explores the intimate connection between poetry and politics in modernity and, in particular, in liberal and fascist Italy. Through a historical and interdisciplinary approach, the essays focus on various fundamental passages of liberal system crisis: political poetry as an act of rebellion against the social and economic system; as a tool of disintegration of bourgeois morality and civilization; as a pillar of the building and consolidation of the fascist regime; as a central instrument of the myth of the'new man'. The publication is focused on the phenomenon of risk behavior of adolescents, close relationships and selected personality variables. We obtained data from 524 adolescents from 7 regions of Slovakia aged 10-16 years. We used questionnaire data collection with the following questionnaires: Incidence of adolescent risk behavior (VRSA), Depressivity Scale of Dolejš, Skopal and Suchá (SDDSS), Impulsivity Scale of Dolejš, Skopal (SIDS), Digital Gaming Questionnaire (DGQ), The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA-R), Executive Function Questionnaire (EFQ). We identified the basic variables that increase the likelihood of producing risky behavior: male gender, primary school environment, increasing age, detecresing level of regulatory abilities, changing the importance of relationships.

Das kunstvolle Regelungsgeflecht, welches gewährleisten sollte, dass der «letzte Wille» Wirksamkeit erlangte, sowie die Frage, wie die Grundsätze des Testamentsrechts praktischen Niederschlag in den überlieferten Dokumenten fand, war Gegenstand einer internationalen Tagung im November 2020. Die Schriftfassungen der Beiträge von führenden Experten aus Deutschland, Italien, Ungarn und der Schweiz sind im vorliegenden Band versammelt.

Aufmerksamkeit erlangen auch Endes Erzählbände allein für Erwachsene mit ihrer Nähe zu Franz Kafka und Jorge Luis Borges. Beachtung findet ebenfalls das musikdramatische Schaffen und Endes Werkgemeinschaft mit dem Komponisten Wilfried Hiller. The British context has been a controversial area for those involved in Irish literature and Irish studies. Behind the present volume lies a search for a view from which the frame of the British context as well as the dichotomy between British and Irish literature can be dismantled and disrupted in a most creative sense. It addresses the question of Irish literature's intrinsic openness by first focusing on the British context that affected Irish literary production through three centuries and then looking beyond it towards the European or global context that lay behind Irish modernism. The book further extends its research to modern Irish poetry and discusses three prominent poets after W.B. Yeats whose works are in and beyond the British context in each different way. Providing unique and new perspectives that have been evolved mostly from an international conference held in Kyoto, Japan, this collection attempts to reassess and explore the values of Irish literature in a global context.

Der vorliegende Sammelband präsentiert die Beiträge des 15. Treffens des Jungen Forums Slavistische Literaturwissenschaft (JFSL), das 2017 an der Universität Hamburg stattfand. Der Band bietet entlang der thematischen Leitbegriffe Zwischenzeiten, Zwischenräume, Zwischenspiele eine Momentaufnahme der aktuellsten Forschung von Nachwuchswissenschaftler/innen der deutschsprachigen slavistischen Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft. Die transgressiven Beziehungen von Literatur und Politik, Text und Medium, Identität und Kultur werden in den Beiträgen aus verschiedenen slavischen Literaturen unter vielfältigen methodischen Ansätzen sowie in breiter zeitlicher und räumlicher Auffächerung untersucht.

Im Mittelpunkt des Buches steht das vielgestaltige und immer noch aktuelle Phänomen des Künstler(tum)s in der Literatur und Kultur. Die hier versammelten Beiträge sollen sowohl als Interpretationsvorschläge von bekannten und weniger bekannten Texten verstanden werden als auch als Versuch, reale und fiktive Künstlerfiguren aus unterschiedlichen Epochen – von Mittelalter, über die Romantik und Moderne, bis Gegenwart – in den Mittelpunkt der Reflexion zu rücken. Die Autorinnen und Autoren verfolgen unterschiedliche, meist komparatistisch ausgerichtete, Forschungsansätze, wobei sie von einem breit verstandenen Begriff des Künstlers ausgehen und ihn in unterschiedlichen Diskursen kontextualisieren.

Sogenannte „Zigeuner“ – Roma, Sinti, Gitanos, Manouches, Zingari – gelten als Randfiguren der Gesellschaft. Die vielfältigen Bezüge zwischen der inszenierten Zigeuner-Figur, der realen Vielfalt und dem Konzept des Außenseiters eröffnen jedoch eine andere Sicht: Die Schnittmenge mit der künstlerischen Bohème und die Gitano-Ästhetik lassen Klischees aufbrechen und Kulturkontakt entstehen, z. B. in Literatur und Kunst. Ceux que l'on nomme les « bohémiens » – Zigeuner, Sinti, Gitanos, Manouches, Zingari – sont souvent associés aux marges. Mais les multiples références qui désignent la figure du bohémien telle qu'elle est mise en scène, la diversité réelle de cette société et le concept de marginalité ouvrent une autre perspective : l'intersection avec la bohème artistique et l'esthétique Gitano permettent de briser les clichés et d'établir des contacts culturels, en littérature ou en art.

Sibylle Bergs Werke wurden erstmals im Zusammenhang mit der Diskussion um die so genannte Popliteratur der 1990er Jahre einem größeren Publikum bekannt. Inzwischen ist sie eine der renommiertesten Autor/innen des deutschsprachigen Literaturbetriebs, auch wenn sie in diesem eine spezielle Position einnimmt. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bands bestimmen ihre spezifische Position «am Rande des Populären». Anlässlich des 20-jährigen Jubiläums eines fulminanten Debüts – das heute als Kultbuch geltende «Ein paar Leute suchen das Glück und lachen sich tot» (1997) – wird das seither entstandene Werk Sibylle Bergs erstmals literaturwissenschaftlich umfassend untersucht und liefert damit einer künftigen Forschung zum Œuvre Bergs die maßgebliche Grundlage.

In German-speaking modernity, Robert Musil may lay the last valid claim to the title of Universalgenie. Trained as a soldier, engineer, philosopher, and psychologist, he did not shy from investigations beyond his accredited purview. His work repurposes the conceptual inventories of literature, philosophy, science, law, medicine, politics, education, etc. to revisit classical questions of beauty, truth, and morality within an ultra-complex modern context. The answers he finds are not conclusive but suggestive and always invite re-examination. Musil studies, at its best, embraces his practice of multivalent inquiry, and the present essay collection endeavors to follow suit. Drawing from Musil's fiction, essays, letters, diaries, and public addresses, the authors of this volume offer unexpected treatments of ideas that Musil examined and reveal previously overlooked links between those ideas and other authors, works, and movements. The contributions have a footing in fields such as psychology, sociology, and statistics; cover concepts like humor, identity, and love; and deal with literary epochs or theories ranging from Romanticism and Modernity to decadence and reader response.

Das Konzept des «Spatial Turn», in den 1980er Jahren durch Edward Soja geprägt, drückt das neue Bewusstsein aus, dass der Raum jeder Produktion von Wissen vorausgesetzt ist. Der vorliegende Sammelband knüpft an diese Bewegung von Wiederentdeckung und Aufwertung des Raumes an. The volume consists of fifteen papers discussing a vast array of issues and aspects relating to the concept of cultural memory. Taking as a standpoint the Halbwachs/Assman critical tradition, the individual contributions trace the relevance of the concept in the context of a wide range of areas, from medieval studies, through Victorian culture, up to multifold examples from the contemporary literary scene, especially speculative fiction. The collection of papers is designed as an informative and exhaustive overview tracing the relevance of the notion of cultural memory as a reference point in the discussion of cultural continuity and transformations in the diachronic context of the evolution of European culture.

This volume includes 13 papers presented in the sections History and Sciences of the Humboldt-Kolleg ‘World War I and Beyond: Human Tragedies, Social Challenges, Scientific and Cultural Responses'organised in Bucharest on September 17–19, 2018; a separate volume is dedicated to selected contributions focusing on literary and cultural studies (Ioana Crǎciun: ‘Wenn die Waffen sprechen, schweigen die Musen nicht'). The papers are grouped in three sections – ‘Intellectuals Facing the Challenges of World War I', ‘Societies Dealing with War Traumas', and ‘Nations and States Coping with War and Peace'. While having a clear focus on Central and Eastern Europe, the volume succeeds in bringing together multiple and complementary perspectives to the complexities of World War I and attempts to integrate the approaches and findings presented at the Bucharest conference in the broader discussions and analyses of this traumatic historical event which has shaped Europe and the world.

As digital humanities in recent years have been taking roots in major international research centers, this edited volume consisting of ten papers including the introduction seeks to examine the current state of the digital/data-driven research in history and neighboring disciplines dealing with Southeast Europe as well as with the Ottoman Empire and to give an interdisciplinary impetus by bringing together international scholars working with various digital approaches. The included papers give a broad introduction into the field and follow various methods of digital analysis and visualization incorporating approaches like corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis,GIS (Geographic Information Systems), agent-based modelling, computationalstatistics etc.

The present volume contains revised versions of most of the papers that were delivered at RICAN 7, which was held in Rethymnon, Crete, on 27-28 May 2013. The focus of the conference was on the portrayal and function of male and female slaves and their masters/mistresses in the ancient novel and related texts; the complex relationship between these social categories raises questions about slavery and freedom, gender and identity, stability of the self and social mobility, social control and social death. This Festschrift for Wolfgang Mieder, preeminent paremiologist and folklorist, combines personal tributes and scholarly papers by colleagues, friends, and former students – presented in three categories that address his roles as a mentor, scholar, and world citizen over many decades. The central scholarly section likewise consists of three parts. The papers dealing with proverbs examine them as patterns, stereotypes, rhetorical devices, media for self-enchantment, and means of allusion in works by Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn, Chukovskaya, and Kempowski. A second group deals with fairy-tale motifs in literary works by Lehmann, Rabinowich, and Hummel. A third section includes topics ranging from James Bond to Stephen King, from runaway slaves to the Holocaust, and literature as cultural ecology.

The book is composed of papers and glosses written in 2001–2015 however performing as a homogenous unit with methodological topics of literary history as its focal point. Part of the essays relate to disputable and still unanswered questions of the emancipatory movement in which early 19th century modern Czech literature was formed (e.g.: paradoxes in relations to German literature, the question of bohemism, the ambiguous interpretation of the national identity, etc.). In the broader context of author's scholar work the presented essays show the gradual formation of the concept of paradigmatic interpretation of literary history closely described in her monograph (In the Network of the history of the National revival literature, 2011). Related to this book are also two papers (The Aspect of totality in the Literature of the national revival and Changes in the Representation of Nationality in Nineteenth‑century Literature) that show further methodological potential of the paradigmatic model in tracing historical changes of different cultural phenomena. Theoretical questions of historical reflection also apply to essays focused on specific aspects of works of particular authors (Němcová, Erben, Šalda, Komenský). These mono‑thematic interpretative discursions may be taken as a verification of possibilities that philosophical hermeneutics offers to literary history. The same concept is also featured by the closing essay that with respect to the issue of an individual as both subject and object of history points out the pitfall in relation between science and ideology.

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the 60th International Academic Week organized by the Southeast Europe Association in October 2022. The event brought together scholars to discuss the various facets of international return migration from diverse destination countries back to Southeast Europe. Within this volume, the concept of return takes on a dynamic and multifaceted character. It is seen not as a one-way journey but as an ongoing, non-linear, and reversible process consisting of multiple stages. This approach recognizes that migration is a journey with many dimensions, involving mobility in various directions. It includes an exploration of Irish and Welsh cognates and possible sources for Merlin; Bakhtinian analysis of Geoffrey of Monmouth's playful discourse; and an account of the transmission of Geoffrey's text into Old Icelandic. In the Middle English tradition, there is an investigation of material Arthuriana in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, followed by explorations of shame in Malory's Morte Darthur. The post-medieval articles see one paper devoted to the paratexts of sixteenth-century French Arthurian publishers; one to eighteenth-century Arthuriana; and one to a range of nineteenth-century rewritings of the virginity of Galahad and Percival's Sister. Two Notes close this volume: one on Geoffrey's Vita Merlini and a possible Irish source, and one on a likely source for Malory's linking of Trystram with the Book of Hunting and Hawking in an early form of The Book of St Albans.

Emotions permeate every aspect of our lives and not only provide us with invaluable information about our environment and the people in it, but also influence our perception of situations and events. Interestingly, this domain, so ubiquitous in our everyday lives, largely resists attempts at scientific definition. One reason for this could be that emotions rarely occur in isolation but are usually combined or embedded in other states of mind. Moreover, the experience of emotions may be influenced not only by culture but also by individual language. Analysis is further complicated by the fact that emotions are abstract and require complex linguistic coding to make an invisible emotional state of the speaker at least rudimentarily visible to the listener. For this reason, the present volume aims to investigate the perception, encoding, reception, and influence potential of emotions in context and across languages using different corpora. The following questions are central: To what extent do emotions influence our perception of events and facts? and To what extent can emotion concepts be defined language-specifically, but also universally, on the basis of our perception? Therefore, the eight contributions analyze emotions in different contexts and from different starting points to uncover the cognitive mechanisms underlying the perception and influence of emotion concepts. The first four papers focus primarily on emotional and sensory experiences and interactions that are set in motion when we are confronted with emotions, while the following four focus on the different facets of emotion across languages to show which emotion concepts are language-specific or universal, and thus contribute to a better understanding of this complex field.

In this experimental work of ecocriticism, Vincent Bruyere confronts the seeming pointlessness of the humanities amid spectacularly negative future projections of environmental collapse. The vanitas paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries dazzlingly depict heaps of riches alongside skulls, shells, and hourglasses. Sometimes even featuring the illusion that their canvases are peeling away, vanitas images openly declare their own pointlessness in relation to the future. This book takes inspiration from the vanitas tradition to fearlessly contemplate the stakes of the humanities in the Anthropocene present, when the accumulated human record could well outlast the climate conditions for our survival. Staging a series of unsettling encounters with early modern texts and images whose claims of relevance have long since expired, Bruyere experiments with the interpretive affordances of allegory and fairytale, still life and travelogues. Each chapter places a vanitas motif—canvas, debris, toxics, paper, ark, meat, and light—in conversation with stories and images of the Anthropocene, from the Pleistocene Park geoengineering project to toxic legacies to in-vitro meat. Considering questions of quiet erasure and environmental memory, this book argues we ought to keep reading, even by the flickering light of extinction.

New and fresh assessments of Malory's Morte Darthur.The essays here are devoted to that seminal Arthurian work, Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur. Developments of papers first given at the'Malory at 550: Old and New'conference, they emphasise here the second part of its remit. Accordingly, several contributors focus new attention on Malory's style, using his stock phrases, metaphors, characterization, or manipulation of sources to argue for a deeper appreciation of his merits as an author. If, as others illustrate, Malory is a much better artist than his twentieth-century reputation allowed, then there is a renewed need to re-assess the vexed question of the possible originality of his'Tale of Sir Gareth of Orkeney'. Similarly fresh approaches underlie those essays re-examining Malory's attitude to time and the sacred in'The Sankgreal', the manner in which the ghosts of Lot and his sons highlight potential failures in the Round Table Oath, or the pleasures and pitfalls of Arthurian hospitality. The Festschrift volume consists of 42 contributions by 55 authors from 13 countries. The papers, written in Catalan, English, French, Russian and Spanish, treat data from these and some other languages (Arabic, BCS [Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian], Czech, Finnish, Hebrew, Korean, Upper Kuskokwim Athabaskan [Alaska], Shughni [Pamir]). They pertain to virtually all branches of'core'synchronic linguistics (with occasional excursions into diachrony, literary theory, philology and religious studies): semantics, lexicology / lexicography, syntax and morphology. Some are more theoretically minded while others are focused on pedagogical and / or computational applications of language models, particularly those of the Meaning-Text theory. The eleven chapters in this international volume draw on a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to focus our attention on medieval and early modern things (ca. 700–1600). The range of things includes actual objects (the Altenburg Crucifixion, a copy of Hieronymus Brunschwig's Liber de arte distillandi, a pilgrim's letter), imagined objects (a prayed cloak for the Virgin Mary), and narrative objects in texts (the Alliterative Morte Arthure, the Ordene de Chevalerie, Hartmann von Aue's Erec, Heinrich of Neustadt's Apollonius of Tyre, Luís de Camões's Os Lusíadas, and the vita of Saint Guthlac). Each in its own way, the papers consider how things do what they do in texts and art, often foregrounding the intersection between the material and the immaterial by exploring such questions as how things act, how they express power, and how texts and images represent them. Medieval and early modern things are repeatedly shown to be more than symbolic or passive, they are agentive and determinative in both their intra- and extradiegetic worlds. The things that are addressed in this volume are varied and are embedded, or entangled, in different contexts and societies, and yet they share a concerted engagement in human life.

Il presente volume raccoglie capitoli dedicati alla figura dell'Urbe in quanto città-Arcadia: come delle ideali vie consolari, tali interventi si sviluppano verso le più varie diramazioni tematiche, pur avendo tutti lo stesso punto di origine o di arrivo: Roma, intesa alla luce del valore architettonico, storico oppure anche simbolico. Una prima ideale “via” di discussione parte dalla Polonia, un'altra passa attraverso l'Inghilterra, una terza “via” unisce idealmente la Grecia con la Russia; un'ultima si origina dalla Roma antica e spazia dal Cinquecento fino ad arrivare alla fin de siècle e al Novecento. Et in Arcadia ego is what Goethe writes after his journey to the city of Rome, to denote the ideal Arcadia for writers, artists and intellectuals of modernity. The present collection comprises chapters dedicated to the figure of Rome as an Arcadia-city: like ideal consular roads, these papers develop into varied thematic branches, even though they all have the same starting, or ending, point – the city of Rome, analyzed from the point of view of its architectural, historical or symbolic value. One ideal “road” of discussion starts in Poland, another “road” passes through England, a third ideally combines Greece and Russia; yet another ideal discussion “road” originates from the ancient Roman myths, runs through the 16th century and reaches the fin de siècle and the 20th century.

The present volume offers an interdisciplinary collection of twenty-four studies to readers interested in the religious, philosophical and artistic aspects of initiation. In itself, the concept of initiation presupposes that there is an initiator, someone to be initiated, and secret rite or knoweledge-in short, a mystery-into which the elect few would be admitted and which must not be revealed to the rest. Initiation is thus very personal, as it encompasses-in Christian theology at least-an encounter with God but also involves a communal experience. While in European context, initiation is an essentially Christian idea, not all the papers of the present volume turn to the Christian tradition for sources. Hermetism, Neoplatonism, pre-Christian paganism and Renaissance esotericism also find a place among the studies published here. Religion and philosophy are not the only viewpoints adopted by our authors, however; the section on art and litterature discusses initiation as it appears on stage, in novels, short stories, and drama as well as poetry, especially in modern European literature.

The multilingualism and polyphony of Jewish literary writing across the globe demands a collaborative, comparative, and interdisciplinary investigation into questions regarding methods of researching and teaching literatures. Disseminating Jewish Literatures compiles case studies that represent a broad range of epistemological and textual approaches to the curricula and research programs of literature departments in Europe, Israel, and the United States. In doing so, it promotes the integration of Jewish literatures into national philologies and the implementation of comparative, transnational approaches to the reading, teaching, and researching of literatures. Instead of a dichotomizing approach, Disseminating Jewish Literatures endorses an exhaustive, comprehensive conceptualization of the Jewish literary corpus across languages. Included in this volume are essays on literatures in Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish, as well as essays reflecting the fields of Yiddish philology and Latin American studies. The volume is based on the papers presented at the Gentner Symposium funded by the Minerva Foundation, held at the Freie Universität Berlin in June 2018.

The articles in this volume represent a wide range of perspectives on the literary art of Ali Smith; one of the most significant figures in the field of contemporary British literature. Focussing on concepts of visual and linguistic representation, these papers reflect Smith's own preoccupations with narrative and language; time and myth; gender and identity. The Literary Art of Ali Smith reflects the inherent complexities in Smith's literary output, as well as the compassion and subversion inherent in her work. Der Band vereinigt 14 österreichische Beiträge (12 Papers, 2 Poster) zum Internationalen Slawistikkongress 2018 in Belgrad. Acht linguistischen Beiträge betreffen klassische und innovative Bereiche der Sprachwissenschaft von Syntax und Lexikografie über Gender und Codeswitching bis Fachsprache und Internet, ein Beitrag behandelt Texte der Slavia Orthodoxa. Die behandelten Sprachen sind Polnisch, Serbisch, Russisch, und Ukrainisch. The papers of the present volume investigate the potential of the metaphor of life as theater for literary, philosophical, juridical and epistemological discourses from the Middle Ages through modernity, and focusing on traditions as manifold as French, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian and Latin-American.

This is the first collection of essays dedicated to the topics of money and economics in the English literature of the late Middle Ages. These essays explore ways that late medieval economic thought informs contemporary English texts and apply modern modes of economic analysis to medieval literature. In so doing, they read the importance and influence of historical records of practices as aids to contextualizing these texts. They also apply recent modes of economic history as a means to understand the questions the texts ask about economics, trade, and money. Collectively, these papers argue that both medieval and modern economic thought are key to valuable historical contextualization of medieval literary texts, but that this criticism can be advanced only if we also recognize the specificity of the economic and social conditions of late-medieval England.

This book maps the development of the boy detective in British children's literature from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. It explores how this liminal figure – a boy operating within a man's world – addresses adult anxieties about boyhood and the boy's transition to manhood. It investigates the literary, social and ideological significance of a vast array of popular detective narratives appearing in ‘penny dreadfuls'and story papers which were aimed primarily at working-class boys. This study charts the relationship between developments in the representation of the fictional boy detective and changing expectations of and attitudes towards real-life British boys during a period where the boy's role in the future of the Empire was a key concern. It emphasises the value of the early fictional boy detective as an ideological tool to condition boy readers to fulfil adult desires and expectations of what boyhood and, in the future, proper manhood should entail. It will be of particular importance to scholars working in the fields of children's literature, crime fiction and popular culture.

Touchstones examines the ways in which John McGahern became a writer through his reading. This reading, it is shown, was both extensive and intensive, and tended towards immersion in the classics. As such, new insights are provided into McGahern's admiration and use of writers as diverse as Dante Alighieri, William Blake, James Joyce, Albert Camus and several others. Evidence for these claims is found both through close reading of McGahern's published texts as well as unprecedented sleuthing in his extensive archive of papers held at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The ultimate intention of the book is to draw attention to the very literary and writerly nature of McGahern as an artist, and to place him, not just as a great Irish writer, but as part of a long and venerable European tradition.
