152. Performing Ensemble : Practices, Theatre, and Social Change
- Author
-
Carmen Pellegrinelli and Carmen Pellegrinelli
- Abstract
The book presents a novel analysis supporting the idea that a theatre ensemble is not just an entity but an emergent process. Through the lens of a theatre company's performative, creative, organizational, and activist practices, the ensemble is conceptualized in its collective becoming. This socio-historical and new materialist analysis of a European theatre company (ATIR) over thirty years highlights how a group's performative capacity to make-ensemble stimulates its organizational and social processes. With a commitment to participation, listening, and horizontality, the ensemble is shown to challenge the structures of capitalism, and fosters a vision of hope for societies.

- Abstract
A geneticist and internationally recognized anti-racism educator provides a powerful, science-based rebuttal to common fallacies about human difference. Well-meaning physicians, parents, and even scientists today often spread misinformation about what biology can and can't tell us about our bodies, minds, and identities. In this accessible, myth-busting book, geneticist Shoumita Dasgupta draws on the latest science to correct common misconceptions about how much of our social identities are actually based in genetics. Dasgupta weaves together history, current affairs, and cutting-edge science to break down how genetic concepts are misused and how we can approach scientific evidence in a socially responsible way. With a unifying and intersectional approach disentangling biology from bigotry, the book moves beyond race and gender to incorporate categories like sexual orientation, disability, and class. Where Biology Ends and Bias Begins is an invaluable, empowering resource for biologists, geneticists, science educators, and anyone working against bias in their community.

155. A Poet’s Ashram : Rabindranath Tagore’s Experimental Community in Colonial India

- Abstract
The remarkably creative life Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) lived has long been an area of scholarly enquiry. Yet, surprisingly, his role as the founder of an experimental ashram community remains unexplored. A Poet's Ashram retrieves his idea of his ashram through an exploration of his writings on the institutions he built. The ashram community Tagore endeavoured to create in Santiniketan during the period 1901–1941 was his response to the question of modernity. Through his effort to reinvent the ancient Indian ideal of the ashram, he articulated his idea of a mode of collective living that was meant to be grounded in a set of ethical values derived from India's civilizational inheritance. This book traces the history of how his ashram school evolved into a community that practised egalitarianism, inclusiveness and creativity through its daily existence. It explores a range of nineteenth- and twentieth-century discourses and Tagore's engagement with them in order to situate that idea within its historical context, a critical juncture in the history of modern India and the world. This book's reading of his project unravels its anti-colonial underpinnings and the commonalities it shared with some of the other similar experimental communities that challenged illiberal ideologies and power relations during the early twentieth century.Meticulously researched and perceptively written, this book will be of interest to students and researchers of history, political science, culture studies and postcolonial studies. It will also be of interest to educationists, educators and those interested in colonial modernity, modern Indian history, philosophy of education, institution building, peace, inclusivity and sustainability.

- Abstract
Creative Work and Distributions of Power is a journey toward an energized and expanded space for considering power in discussions of creative work.Starting with the participatory creativity framework, this book expertly guides readers through case studies of two very different examples of creative work: the 20th-century, groundbreaking systems theorist Gregory Bateson and the current musician/polymath Tyler, The Creator. Through skillfully interwoven narrative and theory, chapters provide readers with a deep understanding of the roles of power in the ways creativity emerges from complex social, material, and historical systems. Thoughtful metalogues featured throughout the book bring readers into the minds of the authors, illustrating the very processes being analyzed. The result is a model of the functions of creative work in mediating personal capacities and larger societal forces. This critical addition to the discourse around creativity and its practice is an ideal first step in understanding creative work and distributions of power for readers in creativity studies as well as sociology and psychology courses.

- Abstract
For nearly seven years, from 1967 to 1974, many hundreds of bright, college-going youth—most of whom had previously been labeled as high school “dropouts”—would proudly celebrate their graduation from Harlem Prep, a small educational experiment that grew to become a nationally renowned, cherished community institution in the iconic Black neighborhood of Harlem. Operating in a repurposed supermarket that used blackboards as classroom dividers, the school's unique multicultural philosophy inspired all who stepped foot inside. This philosophy, exemplified by the school's motto of “unity through diversity,” shaped the school's ethos, fostered student achievement, and, most of all, made Harlem Prep distinct from any other educational institution, past or present. In Strength through Diversity, Barry M. Goldenberg shares the history of this one-of-a-kind multicultural institution from its rise to its apex and decline, revealing the collective stories of hope, struggle, and love from administrators, teachers, community members, and students. Using history as a blueprint, Goldenberg illustrates the untapped potential of multicultural education in the ongoing quest for educational equity.

- Abstract
This open access book explores young children's lives in their later years at primary school, from their own point of view. It focuses on how girls and boys experience life in their informal peer group and explores the dynamics of friendships and social hierarchies, identities and how time is spent outside of lessons, including the use of social media. The author interrogates how children make meanings: who they think they are, what it means to be a girl or a boy, and what forms of femininity and masculinity are most dominant. Findings are based on interviews conducted at a middle-class state school and a fee-paying preparatory school on the outskirts of London. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of primary education, schooling and gender, as well as primary school teachers both in the UK and internationally.

Providing one of the first accounts in English of the work of the founding scholars of comparative education in Latin America from the 19th and 20th centuries, this book presents a detailed analysis of their influence on the field and highlights the pivotal role played by each scholar in the development of comparative education in the Global South. The book chiefly comprises biographical contributions about the achievements of significant Latin American scholars both in terms of critical historical-epistemological traditions and educational reforms that impacted the development of Latin American societies and education systems. Across 13 chapters, the book discusses travellers who contributed to the post-independence period of nation-building; progressive reformers inspired by the work of John Dewey; and finally, scholars who played a key role in the institutionalisation of the field of comparative education in the region. Novel in its focus, even considering publications in Spanish and Portuguese, the book ultimately appeals to the current interest in understanding comparative education and its history as a worldwide project.Exploring the history of comparative education beyond the confines of established Anglo-European accounts, this volume will be of great interest to researchers and scholars in comparative and international education, history of education and Latin American studies.

170. Policy and Power in Education : The Rise and Fall of the LEA
- Author
-
Harold Heller, Peter Edwards, Harold Heller, and Peter Edwards
- Abstract
The fortunes of the education service in Britain have been intimately bound up with the vitality of the local education authorities, particularly in the decades following the 1944 Education Act. The passing of the 1988 Education Reform Act saw the LEAs in serious—perhaps terminal—decline.First published in 1992, Policy and Power in Education sets out to map the contours of this decline in power. It relates these changing fortunes not only to the social and political environment in Britain but also to wider developments in the industrialised world. It argues that post-colonial decline, economic retreat and insular self-satisfaction combined with basic structural flaws in the LEA system threaten its very existence in the last decade of the millennium. The capacity of the system to reform itself into more responsive modes is left as an open question in the face of ever tightening constraints from the Thatcherite tendency in government. The associated challenge to the curriculum is also explored, with the suggestion that an over-prescribed and specified curriculum will prove to be maladaptive against rapidly changing conditions for the twenty-first century. New paradigms of learning are described, while the broadly irrelevant search for utopias on the left is also sceptically reviewed.

This edited volume scrutinises the Nordic dimension within education and how this notion affects, frames and sets direction for school and education in policy, practice and educational research. The book interrogates what unites and divides Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden and analyses how the notion of the Nordic dimension has become conceptualised and institutionalised in different educational settings. Comparative studies of national education policies and practice across these five small North European countries – and Scotland as a case beyond – explore how the Nordic dimension relates to national, regional and transnational collaborations. Further, the book queries the degree to which what are typically considered Nordic approaches to social welfare, gender equality, diversity and international outlook have, in actual fact, affected education. - Abstract
This timely book explores the challenges facing universities and individual scholars through an examination of the history and theory underlying the concept of academic freedom.Freedom of speech is widely viewed as a central attribute of contemporary liberal democracies in which — within limits — differing opinions have the right to be articulated in public without fear of reprisal. Academic freedom, long regarded as central to the idea of the university is, on the other hand, a right which must be earned through the acquisition of expert knowledge and the application of intellectual rigour in teaching and research. Both hard-won freedoms are argued by many to be under serious threat. The expert contributors to this book, from different global regions, examine both the importance of academic freedom and the severe threats universities face in this context in the twenty-first century. With its interdisciplinary perspective and cross-national emphasis, central issues in this text are illustrated through detailed examination of case studies and consideration of wider developments in the academy. Adopting a longue duree approach, rather than discussing the details of fast moving controversies, the analyses offer insights for an educated public about an issue of pressing, contemporary significance. This book will be of interest to researchers, policy makers, staff and students across higher education and to members of the general public, who are concerned about these important and contested matters.

- Abstract
Presenting cutting-edge research from around the world, this book demonstrates how critical pedagogy is shaped by social-political contexts and ideological constructions of knowledge and power. The edited collection brings together a global author team using critical pedagogy to synthesise political and theoretical ambitions with the complex realities of classroom practice. The book addresses two key questions: what does critical pedagogy look like in educative work with young people around the globe? And how can critical praxis enacted in schools and classrooms push the core tenets of critical pedagogy so that they are more responsive to the complex power relations of the real world? Bringing together chapters that create a nuanced understanding of some of the challenges involved in the intersection of ideologies, systems and institutions, the authors offer a set of resources which respond to claims that critical pedagogy is often little more than emancipatory rhetoric with limited practical application.Spanning almost two decades of pedagogical thinking, practice, outreach, community development and activism, this robust volume will be of great interest to researchers and postgraduate students investigating critical education, curriculum, creative thinking and pedagogies.

- Abstract
'Two Thirds'tackles the challenging task of making fraction concepts accessible and engaging for young learners aged 6-9. This innovative educational resource transforms the abstract notion of fractions, particularly two-thirds, into tangible understanding through a carefully structured three-part approach that progresses from concrete objects to mathematical notation. The book's unique strength lies in its systematic methodology, which follows the concrete-pictorial-abstract learning sequence. Beginning with familiar objects like pizzas and candy bars, it gradually builds comprehension through visual representations before introducing formal mathematical concepts. What sets this resource apart is its integration of proven teaching methods with cognitive development research, offering educators and parents a comprehensive toolkit that includes step-by-step activity guides, visual aids, and assessment tools. Throughout its chapters, the book maintains a clear focus on building fundamental understanding rather than promoting rote memorization. It addresses common learning challenges through multiple teaching styles and provides cross-curricular connections to subjects like science and art. The practical applications, from cooking measurements to geometric art projects, help demonstrate the relevance of fractions in everyday life while building a strong foundation for more advanced mathematical concepts. This approach ensures that students develop not just computational skills, but genuine mathematical reasoning abilities that will serve them well in future learning.

- Abstract
This book dissects the relationship between the disciplines of Psychology and Education Studies to provide a new and critical perspective on the usefulness of psychological research and theory for educational purposes.Assuming that affective states form an important part of how humans relate to their environment, this book posits that the currently dominant cognitive approach to the field of psychology is unable to account sufficiently for this experiential reality of human life. Providing a philosophical investigation of this disparity, chapters offer an in-depth discussion of affective states for transformative learning, chart the journey of Psychology as an independent academic discipline, and engage classical learning theories in order to offer a broader understanding of complex, field-specific arguments, and engage readers from multidisciplinary backgrounds. Provoking a true paradigm shift in the field of Education Studies based on its own theoretical underpinnings, this book ultimately initiates a partnership between both disciplines to demonstrate a progressive and radical approach to the way we teach and think about the field of education studies. This cutting-edge book will be of relevance to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students in the fields of Education Studies, educational psychology, the theory of education, and the philosophy of education more broadly. Senior professionals and academics who wish to expand their knowledge in relation to the international literature of this field would further benefit from this volume more broadly.

- Abstract
This book presents an exploration of how Golden Age detective fiction encounters educational ideas, particularly those forged by the transformative educational policymaking of the interwar period.Charting the educational policy and provision of the era, and referring to works by Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Edmund Crispin and others, this book explores the educational capacity and agency of literary detectives, the learning spaces of the genre and the kinds of knowledge that are made available to inquirers both inside and outside the text. It is argued that the genre explores a range of contemporaneous propositions on the balance between academic curriculum and practicum, length of school life and the value of lifelong learning. This book's closing chapter considers the continuing pedagogic value for contemporary classrooms of engaging with the genre as a rich discursive and imaginative space for exploring educational ideas.Framing Golden Age detective fiction as a genre profoundly concerned with learning, this book will be highly relevant reading for academics, postgraduate students and scholars involved in the fields of English language arts, twentieth-century literature and the theories of learning more broadly. Those interested in detective fiction and interdisciplinary literary studies will also find the volume of interest.
