Multimedia Interactive Protocols and Systems (MIPS) is the brand new name of a workshop that has been successfully held for the?rst time in 2002 in Coimbra, as the?rst joint edition of two well established series of workshops: Interactive Distributed Multimedia Systems (IDMS) and Protocols for Multimedia Systems (PROMS). The area covered by Multimedia Interactive Protocols and Systems is indeed broad, since it includes technical and practical issues related to d- tributed multimedia technologies, applications and services, with emphasis on their deployment over next generation networks. The topics set for MIPS 2003 were: mobile and wireless multimedia systems; multimedia middleware and communication protocols; Quality of Service issues; resource management for multimedia services; active and programmable netw- king for multimedia applications; mobile agents for multimedia; multimedia d- tribution and transport; tra?c engineering and service engineering; ubiquitous computing; networked audio-video devices; development tools for distributed multimedia applications; multimedia applications such as video-on-demand, - gital video libraries, video games, virtual community, teleworking, teleteaching, e-commerce, virtual reality simulations; performance of protocols and applica- ons;contentmanagement;serviceaccess;security,authentication,privacy,wat- marking; accounting and tari? policing for multimedia teleservices; multimedia encoding and compression. The Call for Papers attracted more than 130 submissions from Europe, Asia and the Americas, covering most of the proposed topics. With the help of a very dedicated Program Committee and of a number of associate reviewers, subm- sions were carefully evaluated, with an average of three reviewers for each paper.

Since 1993, PROPOR Workshops have become an important forum for re- archers involved in the Computational Processing of Portuguese, both written and spoken. This PROPOR Workshop follows previous workshops held in 1993 (Lisboa, Portugal), 1996 (Curitiba, Brazil), 1998 (Porto Alegre, Brazil), 1999 ´ (Evora, Portugal) and 2000 (Atibaia, Brazil). The workshop has increasingly contributed to bring together researchers and industry partners from both sides of the Atlantic. The constitution of an international program committee and the adoption of high-standard referee procedures demonstrate the steady de- lopment of the?eld and of its scienti?c community. This can also be seen in the realization of the satellite workshop AVALON, which constitutes the?rst evaluation campaign of Portuguese NLP systems. Each one of the 64 submitted papers received a careful, triple blind-review by the program committee. All those who contributed are mentioned in the following pages. The reviewing process led to the selection of 41 papers for oral presentation, 24 regular papers and 17 short papers, which are published in this volume. Theworkshopandthisbookwerestructuredaroundtheeightfollowingmain topics: (i) speech analysis and recognition; (ii) speech synthesis; (iii) pragmatics, discourse, semantics, syntax, and the lexicon; (iv) tools, resources, and appli- tions; (v) dialogue systems; (vi) summarization and information extraction; and (vii) evaluation.

After a decade of major technical and theoretical advancements in the area, the scope for exploitation of database technology has never been greater. Neither has the challenge. This volume contains the proceedings of the 17th British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD 2000), held at the University of Exeter in July 2000. In selecting the quality papers presented here, the programme committee was p- ticularly interested in the demands being made on the technology by emerging application areas, including web applications, push technology, multimedia data, and data warehousing. The concern remains the same: satisfaction of user - quirements on quality and performance. However, with increasing demand for timely access to heterogeneous data distributed on an unregulated Internet, new challenges are presented. Our three invited speakers develop the theme for the conference, considering new dimensions concerning user requirements in accessing distributed, hete- geneous information sources. In the?rst paper presented here, Gio Wiederhold re?ects on the tension between requirements for, on the one hand, precision and relevance and on the other completeness and recall in relating data from heterogeneous resources. In resolving this tension in favour of the former, he maintains that this will fundamentally a?ect future research directions. Sharma Chakravarthy adds another dimension to the requirement on inf- mation, namely timeliness. He shares a vision of just-in-time information de- vered by a push technology based on reactive capabilities. He maintains that this requires a paradigm shift to a user-centric view of information.

These proceedings contain the papers accepted for presentation at the Second International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2003) held on Sanibel Island, Florida, U. S. A., October 20–23, 2003. Following the success of ISWC 2002 that washeldinSardiniainJune2002,ISWC2003enjoyedagreatlyincreasedinterest in the conference themes. The number of submitted papers more than doubled compared with ISWC 2002 to 283. Of those, 262 were submitted to the research track and 21 to the industrial track. With rare exceptions, each submission was evaluated by three program committee members whose reviews were coordinated by members of the senior program committee. This year 49 papers in the research track and 9 papers in the industrial track were accepted. The high quality of ISWC 2003 was the result of the joint e?ort of many people. First of all we would like to thank the authors for their high-quality submissions and the members of the program committee for their reviewing and review coordination e?orts. We would like to extend special thanks to Christoph Bussler for chairing the industrial track, to Mike Dean for his help with the conference management software, the web site, and conference publicity, and to Massimo Paolucci for helping with the organization of the proceedings and arranging sponsorships.

The Third International Conference on E-commerce and Web Technology (EC-Web 2002) was held in conjunction with the DEXA 02 in Aix-en-Provence, France. This conference, first held in Greenwich, United Kingdom in 2000, is now in its third year and is very well established. As in the two previous years, it served as a forum bringing together researchers from academia and commercial developers from industry to discuss the current state of the art in E-commerce and web technology. Inspirations and new ideas emerged from intensive discussions during formal sessions and social events. Keynote addresses, research presentations, and discussions during the conference helped to further develop the exchange of ideas among the researchers, developers, and practitioners who attended. The conference attracted more than 100 submissions and each paper was reviewed by at least three program committee members. The program committee selected 40 papers for presentation and publication, a task which was not easy due to the high quality of the submitted papers. We would like to express our thanks to our colleagues who helped to put together the technical program: the program committee members and external reviewers for their timely and rigorous reviews of the papers, and the organizing committee for their help in the administrative work and support. Edited in collaboration with FoLLI, the Association of Logic, Language and Information, this book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Formal Grammar, FG 2019, held in Riga, Latvia, in August 2019, in conjunction with the 31st European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information, ESSLI 2019.The 7 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 11 submissions. They present new and original research on formal grammar, mathematical linguistics, and the application of formal and mathematical methods to the study of natural language and focus on topics such as formal and computational phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics; model-theoretic and proof-theoretic methods in linguistics; logical aspects of linguistic structure; constraint-based and resource-sensitive approaches to grammar; learnability of formal grammar; integration of stochastic and symbolic models of grammar; foundational, methodological, and architectural issues in grammar and linguistics; and mathematical foundations of statistical approaches to linguistic analysis.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of three workshops held at the 18th Asia-Pacific Web Conference, APWeb 2016, in Suzhou, China, in September 2016: the Second International Workshop on Web Data Mining and Applications, WDMA 2016, the First International Workshop on Graph Analytics and Query Processing, GAP 2016, and the First International Workshop on Spatial-temporal Data Management and Analytics, SDMA 2016. Yaacov's research has had a major impact not only within the walls of academia, but also in the daily life of lay users of such technology that originated from his research. An especially amazing aspect of the temporal span of his scholarly work is that half a century after his influential research from the early 1960s, a project in which he is currently involved is proving to be a sensation, as will become apparent from what follows. Yaacov Choueka began his research career in the theory of computer science, dealing with basic questions regarding the relation between mathematical logic and automata theory. From formal languages, Yaacov moved to natural languages. He was a founder of natural-language processing in Israel, developing numerous tools for Hebrew. He is best known for his primary role, together with Aviezri Fraenkel, in the development of the Responsa Project, one of the earliest fulltext retrieval systems in the world. More recently, he has headed the Friedberg Genizah Project, which is bringing the treasures of the Cairo Genizah into the Digital Age. The LNCS journal Transactions on Computational Collective Intelligence (TCCI) focuses on all facets of computational collective intelligence (CCI) and their applications in a wide range of fields such as the Semantic Web, social networks and multi-agent systems. TCCI strives to cover new methodological, theoretical and practical aspects of CCI understood as the form of intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals (artificial and/or natural). The application of multiple computational intelligence technologies such as fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, neural systems, consensus theory, etc., aims to support human and other collective intelligence and to create new forms of CCI in natural and/or artificial systems. This, the sixth issue of Transactions on Computational Collective Intelligence contains 10 selected papers, focusing on the topics of classification, agent cooperation, paraconsistent reasoning and agent distributed mobile interaction.

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Contemporary Computing, IC3 2010, held in Noida, India, in August 2011. The 58 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 175 submissions.

This book contains a collection of seven thoroughly revised tutorial papers based on lectures given by leading researchers at the 5th International Summer School on the Reasoning Web, held in Brixen-Bressanone, Italy, from August 30 to September 4, 2009. The objective of the book is to provide a coherent introduction to semantic web methods and research issues with a particular emphasis on reasoning. The focus of this year's event was on the use of semantic technologies to enhance data access on the web. Topics covered include design and analysis of reasoning procedures for description logics; answer set programming basics, its modeling methodology and its principal extensions tailored for semantic web applications; languages for constraining and querying XML data; RDF database theory and efficient and scalable support for RDF/OWL data storage, loading, inferencing and querying; tractable description logics and their use for ontology-based data access; and the social semantic desktop, which defines a user's personal information environment as a source and end-point of the semantic web.

The LNCS Journal on Data Semantics is devoted to the presentation of notable work that, in one way or another, addresses research and development on issues related to data semantics. The scope of the journal ranges from theories supporting the formal definition of semantic content to innovative domain-specific applications of semantic knowledge. The journal addresses researchers and advanced practitioners working on the semantic web, interoperability, mobile information services, data warehousing, knowledge representation and reasoning, conceptual database modeling, ontologies, and artificial intelligence. Volume XIV results from a rigorous selection among 21 full papers received in response to a call for contributions issued in September 2008.

The International Conference on Intelligent Computing (ICIC) was formed to provide an annual forum dedicated to the emerging and challenging topics in artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, and computational biology, etc. It aims to bring - gether researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to share ideas, problems, and solutions related to the multifaceted aspects of intelligent computing. ICIC 2009, held in Ulsan, Korea, September 16-19, 2009, constituted the 5th - ternational Conference on Intelligent Computing. It built upon the success of ICIC 2008, ICIC 2007, ICIC 2006, and ICIC 2005 held in Shanghai, Qingdao, Kunming, and Hefei, China, 2008, 2007, 2006, and 2005, respectively. This year, the conference concentrated mainly on the theories and methodologies as well as the emerging applications of intelligent computing. Its aim was to unify the p- ture of contemporary intelligent computing techniques as an integral concept that hi- lights the trends in advanced computational intelligence and bridges theoretical research with applications. Therefore, the theme for this conference was “Emerging Intelligent Computing Technology and Applications.” Papers focusing on this theme were solicited, addressing theories, methodologies, and applications in science and technology.

This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series contains the papers accepted for presentation at the Second International Conference on Autonomous Infrastructure, Management and Security (AIMS 2008). The conference took place in Bremen, Germany, hosted by the Jacobs University Bremen. AIMS 2008 was - ganized and supported by the EC IST-EMANICS Network of Excellence (#26854) in cooperation with ACM SIGAPP and ACM SIGMIS and co-sponsored by IFIP WG 6.6 and Jacobs University Bremen. This year's AIMS 2008 constituted the second edition of a single-track and standalone conference on management and security aspects of distributed and autonomous systems, which took place initially in Oslo, Norway in June 2007. The?rst objective of the AIMS conference series is to stimulate the exchange of ideas in a cross-disciplinary forum where there is su?cient time for discussion of novel ideas. A second objective is to provide a forum for doctoral students to discuss their research ideas in a wider audience and to receive training to help make their research careers successful. To this end, AIMS includes a PhD workshop and a tutorial program that is o?ered as part of the main conference program.

Papers focusing on this theme were solicited, addressing theories, methodologies, and applications in science and technology.

The objective of the workshops associated with the ER'99 18th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling is to give participants access to high level presentations on specialized, hot, or emerging scientific topics. Three themes have been selected in this respect: — Evolution and Change in Data Management (ECDM'99) dealing with han­ dling the evolution of data and data structure, — Reverse Engineering in Information Systems (REIS'99) aimed at exploring the issues raised by legacy systems, — The World Wide Web and Conceptual Modehng (WWWCM'99) which ana­ lyzes the mutual contribution of WWW resources and techniques with con­ ceptual modeling. ER'99 has been organized so that there is no overlap between conference ses­ sions and the workshops. Therefore participants can follow both the conference and the workshop presentations they are interested in. “Evolve or perish” – this is the motto for living systems. Judging by this saying, the Web is alive and well: new sites and business ideas are coming online almost daily and are able to attract millions of users often. The more recently coined term “Web 2.0” summarizes many of the new developments, capturing efforts making the Web more interactive (like Ajax), more collaborative (like Wikis), or more relationship oriented (like online social networks), aiming to partially fulfill the original promise of the Web. These new Web developments offer an opportunity and challenge for the Semantic Web: what previously manifested itself mostly in “dry” specifications is now becoming the foundation for information exchange on the Web, creating a shared semantic information space. These and other challenges have been picked up by several hundred computer scientists, developers, vendors, government workers, venture capitalists, students, and users, gathered in Athens, Atlanta, USA, November 5–9, 2006, for the Fifth International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2006). Building on previous successful meetings in Sardinia, Sanibel Island, Hiroshima, and Galway, this sixth annual conference demonstrates new research results, technology, and applications that show current incarnations of the Semantic Web. Especially encouraging is the shift towards more applications—whereas the Research Track attracted roughly as many papers as in the previous year, the contributions submitted to the In-Use Track doubled.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Web-Age Information Management, WAIM 2006, held in Hong Kong, June 2006. The book presents 50 revised full papers, organized in topical sections on indexing, XML query processing, information retrieval, sensor networks and grid computing, peer-to-peer systems, Web services, Web searching, temporal database, clustering, clustering and classification, data mining, data stream processing, XML and semistructured data, and more.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 9th International Workshop on the Design, Specification, and Verification of Interactive Systems, DSV-IS 2002, held in Rostock, Germany in June 2002. The 19 revised full papers presented have gone through two rounds of reviewing, selection, and improvement. All aspects of the design, specification, and verification of interactive systems from the human-computer interaction point of view are addressed. Particular emphasis is given to models and their role in supporting the design and development of interactive systems and user interfaces for ubiquitous computing.

This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series contains the set of papers accepted for publication at the colocated QofIS/ICQT 2002 workshops, i.e. the 3rd COST Action 263 International Workshop on Quality of future Internet Services (QofIS) and the 2nd International Workshop on Internet Charging and QoS Technology (ICQT), both of which took place at the ETH Zric h, Switzerland, hosted by the Computer Engineering and Networking Laboratory, TIK. QofIS 2002 was the third in a series of highly successful technical workshops and meetings on Internet services within the framework of the COST Action 263 Q uality of future Internet Services, following previous events in Berlin, Germany in 2000 and in Coimbra, Portugal in 2001. ICQT 2002 was the follow-up to a vivid and extremely well-attended workshop on Internet economics and charging technology that took place within the framework of the Annual Meeting of the German Society for Computer Science (GI) and the Austrian Computer Society in 2001 in Vienna, Austria.

This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the 14th International Symposium on Methodologies for Intelligent Systems, ISMIS 2003, held in Maebashi City, Japan, 28–31 October, 2003. The symposium was organized by the Maebashi Institute of Technology in co-operation with the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. It was sponsored by the Maebashi Institute of Technology, Maebashi Convention Bureau, Maebashi City Government, Gunma Prefecture Government, US AFOSR/AOARD, the Web Intelligence Consortium (Japan), Gunma Information Service Industry Association, and Ryomo Systems Co., Ltd. ISMIS is a conference series that was started in 1986 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Since then it has been held in Charlotte (North Carolina), Knoxville (Tennessee), Turin (Italy), Trondheim (Norway), Warsaw (Poland), Zakopane (Poland), and Lyon (France). The program committee selected the following major areas for ISMIS 2003: active media human-computer interaction, autonomic and evolutionary computation, intelligent agent technology, intelligent information retrieval, intelligent information systems, knowledge representation and integration, knowledge discovery and data mining, logic for artificial intelligence, soft computing, and Web intelligence.

The International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL) is an annual international forum for participants to exchange research results, innovative ideas, and state-of-the-art developments in digital libraries. Built upon the successes of the first four ICADL conferences, the 5th ICADL Conference in Singapore was aimed at further strengthening the position of ICADL as a premier digital library conference that draws high quality papers and presentations from all around the world, while meeting the needs and interests of digital library communities in the Asia-Pacific region. The theme of the conference, “Digital Libraries: People, Knowledge & Technology,” reflects the shared belief of the organizers that success in the development and implementation of digital libraries lies in the achievement of three key areas: the richness and depth of content to meet the needs of the communities they intend to serve; the technologies that are employed to build user-centered environments through organization, interaction, and provision of access to that content; and the human elements of management policies, maintenance, and vision necessary to keep pace with new content, new technologies, and changing user needs.

The 2001 International Workshop on Quality of future Internet Services (QofIS 2001) held in Coimbra, Portugal, organized by COST Action 263, is the second of what we expect will become a series of successful QofIS workshops. The previous workshop was held in Berlin in the year 2000. The areas of interest of QofIS cover the design, implementation and provision of Quality of Service, spanning key issues of current and emerging communication systems such as packet-level issues, flow-level issues, network-level issues, architectural issues, and applications. The emphasis of the QofIS2001 w orkshop is on horizontal (end-to-end) as well as vertical (top-down) provision of quality of services, covering all components of end systems and networks, with the aim of identifying solutions enabling feasible and coherent QoS provision. The QofIS2001 cal l for papers attracted 87 submissions from 23 Asian, Australian, European, North American, and South American countries. These were subject to thorough review work by the Programme Committee members and additional reviewers who carried out their work using a specially built conference system, WebChairing, developed in Coimbra by Flor de Utopia, that allowed full control of the submission and reviewing processes. Based on the comments and recommendations of the reviews, the final programme was defined in a Programme th Committee meeting held at the University of Karlsruhe on June 5, 2001.
