This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the International Dagstuhl-Seminar on Efficient Algorithms for Global Optimization Methods in Computer Vision, held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in November 2011. The 8 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected by 12 lectures given at the seminar. The seminar focused on the entire algorithmic development pipeline for global optimization problems in computer vision: modelling, mathematical analysis, numerical solvers and parallelization. In particular, the goal of the seminar was to bring together researchers from all four fields to analyze and discuss the connections between the different stages of the algorithmic design pipeline.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on Declarative Agent Languages and Technologies, DALT 2012, held in conjunction with the 11th International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS 2012) at Valencia, Spain, in June 2012. Algorithmic probability and friends: Proceedings of the Ray Solomonoff 85th memorial conference is a collection of original work and surveys. The Solomonoff 85th memorial conference was held at Monash University's Clayton campus in Melbourne, Australia as a tribute to pioneer, Ray Solomonoff (1926-2009), honouring his various pioneering works - most particularly, his revolutionary insight in the early 1960s that the universality of Universal Turing Machines (UTMs) could be used for universal Bayesian prediction and artificial intelligence (machine learning). This work continues to increasingly influence and under-pin statistics, econometrics, machine learning, data mining, inductive inference, search algorithms, data compression, theories of (general) intelligence and philosophy of science - and applications of these areas. Ray not only envisioned this as the path to genuine artificial intelligence, but also, still in the 1960s, anticipated stages of progress in machine intelligence which would ultimately lead to machines surpassing human intelligence. Ray warned of the need to anticipate and discuss the potential consequences - and dangers - sooner rather than later. Possibly foremostly, Ray Solomonoff was a fine, happy, frugal and adventurous human being of gentle resolve who managed to fund himself while electing to conduct so much of his paradigm-changing research outside of the university system. The volume contains 35 papers pertaining to the abovementioned topics in tribute to Ray Solomonoff and his legacy.

I undertook an investigation of his life and work, during which I began to realise that a large number of early developments, which we can now see as culminating in the modern digital computer, had been most undeservedly forgotten. Hopefully, historians of science, some of whom are now taking up the subject of the development of the computer and accumulating valuable data, particularly about the more recent events from the people concerned, will before too long provide us with comprehensive analytical accounts of the invention of the computer. The present book merely aims to bring together some of the more important and interesting written source material for such a history of computers. (Where necessary, papers have been translated into English, but every attempt has been made to retain the flavour of the original, and to avoid possibly misleading use of modern computing terminology.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 15th International Workshop on Theoretic Foundations of Computer Vision, held as a Dagstuhl Seminar in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in June/July 2011. The 19 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected after a blind peer-review process. The topic of this Workshop was Outdoor and Large-Scale Real-World Scene Analysis, which covers all aspects, applications and open problems regarding the performance or design of computer vision algorithms capable of working in outdoor setups and/or large-scale environments. Developing these methods is important for driver assistance, city modeling and reconstruction, virtual tourism, telepresence, and motion capture.

This volume is based on the contributions to the International Workshop on the Web and Databases (WebDB'98), held in Valencia, Spain, March 27 and 28, 1998, in conjunction with the Sixth International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT'98). In response to the workshop call for papers, 37 manuscripts were submitted to the program committee. The review process was conducted entirely by- mail. While the quality of submissions was generally high, only 16 papers could be accepted for presentation within the limited time allowed by the workshop schedule. Authors of workshop papers were invited to submit extended versions oftheirpapersforpublicationinthesepost-workshopproceedings.The13papers appearing in this volume were submitted and selected after a second round of reviews. This book contains selected contributions from some of the most renowned researchers in the field of small-scale robotics, based in large part on invited presentations from the workshop “The Different Sizes of Small-Scale Robotics: from Nano-, to Millimeter-Sized Robotic Systems and Applications,” which was held in conjunction with the conjunction with the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2013), in May 2013 in Karlsruhe, Germany. With many potential applications in areas such as medicine, manufacturing or search and rescue, small-scale robotics represent a new emerging frontier in robotics research. The aim of this book is to provide an insight to ongoing research and future directions in this novel, continuously evolving field, which lies at the intersection of engineering, computer science, material science and biology.

With the proliferation of consumer devices, computation is becoming truly ubiq- tous. Multi-agent systems hold the promise to enable utilization of these compu- tional resources for ground-breaking new applications. However, as the number of agents involved in multi-agent computations rises, traditional approaches of bui- ing multi-agent systems fail to scale. Massively multi-agent systems address this challenge of scale. Massive, in this context, is meant to capture the complexity of such systems, which precludes decision making to focus on individual agents. Agents making decisions have to reduce the complexity of the space in which they must decide. The focus, therefore, is on the approaches to manage the compl- ity, implications of this abstraction, as well as on identifying ways of applying the paradigm to problems. Papers appearing in this volume have been selected from three inter- tional workshops held in conjunction with the International Conferences on - tonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS) held in 2006 and 2007: First International Workshop on Coordination and Control in Massively Mul- agent Systems (CCMMS 2007); and the jointly held Second International Workshop on Massively Multi-agent Systems (MMAS 2006) and the Third Int- national Workshop on Challenges in the Coordination of Large-Scale Multi-agent Systems (LSMAS 2006).

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the First WICI International Workshop on Web Intelligence meets Brain Informatics, WImBI 2006, which was held in Beijing, China, in December 2006. The workshop explores a new perspective of Web Intelligence (WI) research from the viewpoint of Brain Informatics (BI). The 26 revised full-length papers presented together with three introductory lectures have been carefully reviewed and selected.

The 20 revised full papers presented in this book together with 4 section surveys were carefully reviewed and selected from the papers contributed to the 14th International Conference on Applications of Prolog, INAP 2001, held in Tokyo, Japan, in October 2002. The papers are devoted to the four tightly interwoven aspects knowledge acquisition, knowledge management, knowledge processing, and knowledge distribution, all in the context of the World Wide Web; they are organized in topical sections on Web languages and logic, knowlege acquisition and knowledge representation, decision support by advanced logic programming, and Web-knowledge management and data mining. The papers in this volume were presented at the workshop “Innovative Internet Community Systems 2003” held on June 19–21, 2003 in Leipzig. IICS 2003 was the thirdworkshopintheIICSseries.Thepurposeofthese workshopsisto bring together researchers in the area of system and information management for the Next Generation Internet (NGI). This collection represents the proceedings of the 1st GSFC/JPL Workshop on Radical Agent Concepts (WRAC), which was held on 16–18 January, 2002 at the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) Conference Center in McLean, VA, USA. Over the past few years, agent technologyhas emerged as a powerful force in computing. Agent technology may well form the foundation for the next gen- ation of computing systems. New and innovative agent concepts and techniques may bring further developments to this exploding area of research. Such work is often strongly inspired by theoretical or empirical studies of human behavior, social intelligence, psychology, arts, biology, computer science and philosophy. Thisworkshopaimedatbringingtogether,inaninterdisciplinaryevent,or- inal thinkers, practitioners and academics with an interest in radical (very - novative) concepts for agent-based systems. The workshop provided a forum to present the latest research?ndings in many aspects of agent technology. The - ganizers welcomed participation by those working in agent architectures, agent communities, agent communications, agent modeling, agent applications and other agent-related areas. We were particularly seeking papers on novel and - novative ideas, pushing the envelope of current agent technology. Contributions without a prototype or working system, i.e., purely conceptual contributions, were welcomed, and ”out-of-the-box” thinkers were especially encouraged to participate. The workshop was structured so as to allow the participants adequate time for discussion and interaction, to exchange ideas and re?ect on the motivations, scienti?c grounds and practical consequences of the concepts presented.

Electronic Commerce, as a gamut of activities involving electronic transactions performed over a network via software that may be more or less autonomous, is an emerging reality. Strategic studies have shown that electronic commerce is a major growth industry. The book is devoted to the challenges and opportunities that electronic commerce opens for agent technology. For some time, electronic commerce has attracted the avid attention of agent-builders and agent technology researchers, and these have decisively contributed to advancing the state of the art in the field. The second-generation software agents now entering the scene hold great promise for the further advancement of electronic commerce. This book originates from a workshop on Agent-Mediated Electronic Trading held at Agents'98 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in May 1998. The eleven carefully reviewed and revised papers present a unique survey of software agents in the context of electronic commerce.

WorkshopTheme The ease and speed with which business transactions can be carried out over the Web has been a key driving force in the rapid growth of electronic commerce. In addition, customer interactions, including personalized content, e-mail c- paigns, and online feedback provide new channels of communication that were not previously available or were very ine?cient. The Web presents a key driving force in the rapid growth of electronic c- merceandanewchannelforcontentproviders.Knowledgeaboutthecustomeris fundamental for the establishment of viable e-commerce solutions. Rich web logs provide companies with data about their customers and prospective customers, allowing micro-segmentation and personalized interactions. Customer acqui- tion costs in the hundreds of dollars per customer are common, justifying heavy emphasis on correct targeting. Once customers are acquired, customer retention becomes the target. Retention through customer satisfaction and loyalty can be greatly improved by acquiring and exploiting knowledge about these customers and their needs. Althoughweblogsarethesourceforvaluableknowledgepatterns,oneshould keep in mind that the Web is only one of the interaction channels between a company and its customers. Data obtained from conventional channels provide invaluable knowledge on existing market segments, while mobile communication adds further customer groups. In response, companies are beginning to integrate multiple sources of data including web, wireless, call centers, and brick-a- mortar store data into a single data warehouse that provides a multifaceted view of their customers, their preferences, interests, and expectations.

With the development of the World-Wide Web, data management problems have branched out from the traditional framework in which tabular data is processed under the strict control of an application, and address today the rich variety of information that is found on the Web, considering a variety of?exible envir- ments under which such data can be searched, classi ed, and processed. Da- base systems are coming forward today in a new role as the primary backend for the information provided on the Web. Most of today's Web accesses trigger some form of content generation from a database, while electronic commerce often triggers intensive DBMS-based applications. The research community has begun to revise data models, query languages, data integration techniques, - dexes, query processing algorithms, and transaction concepts in order to cope with the characteristics and scale of the data on the Web. New problems have been identi ed, among them goal-oriented information gathering, management of semi-structured data, or database-style query languages for Web data, to name just a few. The International Workshop on the Web and Databases (WebDB) is a series of workshops intended to bring together researchers interested in the interaction between databases and the Web. This year's WebDB 2000 was the third in the series, and was held in Dallas, Texas, in conjunction with the ACM SIGMOD International Conference on Management of Data.

In recent years, autonomous robots, including Xavier, Martha [1], Rhino [2,3], Minerva,and Remote Agent, have shown impressive performance in long-term demonstrations. In NASA's Deep Space program, for example, an - tonomous spacecraft controller, called the Remote Agent [5], has autonomously performed a scienti?c experiment in space. At Carnegie Mellon University, Xavier [6], another autonomous mobile robot, navigated through an o?ce - vironment for more than a year, allowing people to issue navigation commands and monitor their execution via the Internet. In 1998, Minerva [7] acted for 13 days as a museum tourguide in the Smithsonian Museum, and led several thousand people through an exhibition. These autonomous robots have in common that they rely on plan-based c- trol in order to achieve better problem-solving competence. In the plan-based approach, robots generate control actions by maintaining and executing a plan that is e?ective and has a high expected utility with respect to the robots'c- rent goals and beliefs. Plans are robot control programs that a robot can not only execute but also reason about and manipulate [4]. Thus, a plan-based c- troller is able to manage and adapt the robot's intended course of action — the plan — while executing it and can thereby better achieve complex and changing tasks.

1 WorkshopTheme Data mining as a discipline aims to relate the analysis of large amounts of user data to shed light on key business questions. Web usage mining in particular, a relatively young discipline, investigates methodologies and techniques that - dress the unique challenges of discovering insights from Web usage data, aiming toevaluateWebusability,understandtheinterestsandexpectationsofusersand assess the e?ectiveness of content delivery. The maturing and expanding Web presents a key driving force in the rapid growth of electronic commerce and a new channel for content providers. Customized o?ers and content, made possible by discovered knowledge about the customer, are fundamental for the establi- ment of viable e-commerce solutions and sustained and e?ective content delivery in noncommercial domains. Rich Web logs provide companies with data about their online visitors and prospective customers, allowing microsegmentation and personalized interactions. While Web mining as a domain is several years old, the challenges that characterize data analysis in this area continue to be formidable. Though p- processing data routinely takes up a major part of the e?ort in data mining, Web usage data presents further challenges based on the di?culties of assigning data streams to unique users and tracking them over time. New innovations are required to reliably reconstruct sessions, to ascertain similarity and di?erences between sessions, and to be able to segment online users into relevant groups.

Every year we witness acceleration in the availability, deployment, and use of distributed applications. However building increasingly sophisticated applications for extant and emerging networked systems continues to be challenging for several reasons: – Abstract models of computation used in distributed systems research often do not fully capture the limitations and the unpredictable nature of realistic distributed computing platforms; – Fault-tolerance and ef?ciency of computation are dif?cult to combine when the c- puting medium is subject to changes, asynchrony, and failures; – Middleware used for constructing distributed software does not provide services most suitable for sophisticated distributed applications; – Middleware services are speci?ed informally and without precise guarantees of e- ciency, fault-tolerance, scalability, and compositionality; – Speci?cation of distributed deployment of software systems is often left out of the development process; – Finally, there persists an organizational and cultural gap between engineering groups developing systems in a commercial enterprise, and research groups advancing the scienti?c state-of-the-art in academic and industrial settings. The objectives of this book are: (1) to serve as a motivation for de?ning future research programs in distributed computing, (2) to help identify areas where practitioners and engineers on the one hand and scientists and researchers on the other can improve the state of distributed computing through synergistic efforts, and (3) to motivate graduate students interested in entering the exciting research?eld of distributed computing.
