This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Database Theory, ICDT 2007, held in Spain in January 2007. The papers are organized in topical sections on information integration and peer to peer, axiomatizations for XML, expressive power of query languages, incompleteness, inconsistency, and uncertainty, XML schemas and typechecking, stream processing and sequential query processing, ranking, XML update and query, as well as query containment.

This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the 14th International Symposium on Methodologies for Intelligent Systems, ISMIS 2003, held in Maebashi City, Japan, 28–31 October, 2003. The symposium was organized by the Maebashi Institute of Technology in co-operation with the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. It was sponsored by the Maebashi Institute of Technology, Maebashi Convention Bureau, Maebashi City Government, Gunma Prefecture Government, US AFOSR/AOARD, the Web Intelligence Consortium (Japan), Gunma Information Service Industry Association, and Ryomo Systems Co., Ltd. ISMIS is a conference series that was started in 1986 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Since then it has been held in Charlotte (North Carolina), Knoxville (Tennessee), Turin (Italy), Trondheim (Norway), Warsaw (Poland), Zakopane (Poland), and Lyon (France). The program committee selected the following major areas for ISMIS 2003: active media human-computer interaction, autonomic and evolutionary computation, intelligent agent technology, intelligent information retrieval, intelligent information systems, knowledge representation and integration, knowledge discovery and data mining, logic for artificial intelligence, soft computing, and Web intelligence.

The International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL) is an annual international forum for participants to exchange research results, innovative ideas, and state-of-the-art developments in digital libraries. Built upon the successes of the first four ICADL conferences, the 5th ICADL Conference in Singapore was aimed at further strengthening the position of ICADL as a premier digital library conference that draws high quality papers and presentations from all around the world, while meeting the needs and interests of digital library communities in the Asia-Pacific region. The theme of the conference, “Digital Libraries: People, Knowledge & Technology,” reflects the shared belief of the organizers that success in the development and implementation of digital libraries lies in the achievement of three key areas: the richness and depth of content to meet the needs of the communities they intend to serve; the technologies that are employed to build user-centered environments through organization, interaction, and provision of access to that content; and the human elements of management policies, maintenance, and vision necessary to keep pace with new content, new technologies, and changing user needs.

This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series contains the set of papers accepted for publication at the colocated QofIS/ICQT 2002 workshops, i.e. the 3rd COST Action 263 International Workshop on Quality of future Internet Services (QofIS) and the 2nd International Workshop on Internet Charging and QoS Technology (ICQT), both of which took place at the ETH Zric h, Switzerland, hosted by the Computer Engineering and Networking Laboratory, TIK. QofIS 2002 was the third in a series of highly successful technical workshops and meetings on Internet services within the framework of the COST Action 263 Q uality of future Internet Services, following previous events in Berlin, Germany in 2000 and in Coimbra, Portugal in 2001. ICQT 2002 was the follow-up to a vivid and extremely well-attended workshop on Internet economics and charging technology that took place within the framework of the Annual Meeting of the German Society for Computer Science (GI) and the Austrian Computer Society in 2001 in Vienna, Austria.

The 2001 International Workshop on Quality of future Internet Services (QofIS 2001) held in Coimbra, Portugal, organized by COST Action 263, is the second of what we expect will become a series of successful QofIS workshops. The previous workshop was held in Berlin in the year 2000. The areas of interest of QofIS cover the design, implementation and provision of Quality of Service, spanning key issues of current and emerging communication systems such as packet-level issues, flow-level issues, network-level issues, architectural issues, and applications. The emphasis of the QofIS2001 w orkshop is on horizontal (end-to-end) as well as vertical (top-down) provision of quality of services, covering all components of end systems and networks, with the aim of identifying solutions enabling feasible and coherent QoS provision. The QofIS2001 cal l for papers attracted 87 submissions from 23 Asian, Australian, European, North American, and South American countries. These were subject to thorough review work by the Programme Committee members and additional reviewers who carried out their work using a specially built conference system, WebChairing, developed in Coimbra by Flor de Utopia, that allowed full control of the submission and reviewing processes. Based on the comments and recommendations of the reviews, the final programme was defined in a Programme th Committee meeting held at the University of Karlsruhe on June 5, 2001.

After some time of early experience Web Services are moving themselves from a new highly fragmented technology to a piece of nowadays infrastructures which promise to address various current challenges. These include especially classical issues of integration and data in a heterogeneous environment. The Web Service technology provides an open and technology-agnostic interface, and furthermore propels new usage paradigms in distributed computing infrastructures like Grid Services. Successful adoption of Web Service technology relies on the de?nition of interoperable architectural building blocks which can be integrated in existing softwarearchitectures,likeJ2EEorCORBAheritage. Interoperabilitywillsurely proveitselfasthecriticalsuccessfactoroftheWebServiceproliferation. Inorder to accomplish these interoperability various standardization bodies such as the W3C, UN or OASIS founded activities to create speci?cations and products implementing these building blocks. As the sister event of the First International Conference on Web Services (ICWS 2003), which was held in Las Vegas, June 23 - 26, USA, has proven to be an excellent catalyst for research and collaboration, the 2003 International C- ference on Web Services - Europe (ICWS-Europe 2003) is expected to continue this trend. The topics of papers collected in this proceedings volume ranges from issues like modeling, development, deployment, publishing, as well as discovery, composition and collaboration, plus monitoring and analytical control. Addit- nal contributions summarize some research and development challenges of bu- ding Web Service solutions. Especially, some contributions present an emerging research direction, namely, Web Services collaboration. Moreover, some major research activities associated with facilitating extended business collaboration using Web services and semantic annotation are also covered.
