“Intelligent systems must perform in order to be in demand. ” Intelligent systems technology is being applied steadily in solving many day-to-day problems. Each year the list of real-world deployed applications that inconspicuously host the results of research in the area grows considerably. These applications are having a significant impact in industrial operations, in financial circles, in transportation, in education, in medicine, in consumer products, in games and elsewhere. A set of selected papers presented at the seventeenth in the series of conferences on Industrial and Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems (IEA/AIE 2004), sponsored by the International Society of Applied Intelligence, is offered in this manuscript. These papers highlight novel applications of the technology and show how new research could lead to new and innovative applications. We hope that you find these papers to be educational, useful in your own research, and stimulating. In addition, we have introduced some special sessions to emphasize a few areas of artificial intelligence (AI) that are either relatively new, have received considerable attention recently or perhaps have not yet been represented well. To this end, we have included special sessions on e-learning, bioinformatics, and human-robot interaction (HRI) to complement the usual offerings in areas such as data mining, machine learning, intelligent systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms, autonomous agents, natural language processing, intelligent user interfaces, evolutionary computing, fuzzy logic, computer vision and image processing, reasoning, heuristic search, security, Internet applications, constraint satisfaction problems, design, and expert systems.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 29th International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning, ICCBR 2021, which took place in Salamanca, Spain, during September 13-16, 2021. The 21 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 85 submissions. They deal with AI and related research focusing on comparison and integration of CBR with other AI methods such as deep learning architectures, reinforcement learning, lifelong learning, and eXplainable AI (XAI).

The LNCS journal Transactions on Large-scale Data and Knowledge-centered Systems focuses on data management, knowledge discovery, and knowledge processing, which are core and hot topics in computer science. Since the 1990s, the Internet has become the main driving force behind application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability.This, the 49th issue of Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems, contains four fully revised and extended papers selected from the 36th conference on Data Management - Principles, Technologies and Applications, BDA 2020. The topics cover a wide range of timely data management research topics on crowdsourcing, data streams, skyline queries and data protection.

In this book we present a collection of papers around the topic of Agent-Mediated Electronic Commerce. Most of the papers originate from the third workshop on Agent{Mediated Electronic Commerce held in conjunction with the Autonomous Agents conference in June 2000. After two previous workshops, one during the Autonomous Agents conference in 1998 in Minneapolis and the second one in conjunction with the International Joint Conference On Arti cial Intelligence in 1999, this workshop continued the tradition of the previous ones by setting the scene for the assessment of the challenges that Agent-Mediated Electronic Commerce faces as well as the opportunities it creates. By focusing on age- mediated interactions, specialists from di erent disciplines were brought together who contribute theoretical and application perspectives in the narrowly focused topic that nevertheless involves wide ranging concerns such as: agent architec- res, institutionalization, economic theory, modeling, legal frameworks and policy guidelines. The main topics for the workshop were: { Electronic negotiation models for agents { Formal issues for agents that operate in electronic market places { Virtual trading institutions and platforms { Trading strategies for interrelated transactions (respectively auctions) The workshop received 12 submissions of which 7 were selected for publication in this volume. Although the number of submissions was less then expected for an important area like agent-mediated electronic commerce there is no reason to worry that this area does not get enough attention from the agent community.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases, SSTD 2003, held at Santorini Island, Greece in July 2003. The 28 revised full papers presented together with a keynote paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 105 submissions. the papers are organized in topical sections on access methods, advanced query processing, data mining and data warehousing, distance-based queries, mobility and moving points management, modeling and languages, similarity processing, systems and implementation issues.

This book provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art, in conceptual modeling. It grew out of research papers presented at the 18th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER'99) and arranged by the editors. The plan of the conference is to cover the whole spectrum of conceptual modeling as it relates to database and information systems design and to offer a complete coverage of data and process modeling, database technology, and database applications. The aim of the conference and of these proceedings is to present new insights related to each of these topics. This book contains both selected and invited papers. The 33 selected papers are organized in 11 sessions encompassing the major themes of the conference, especially : - schema transformation, evolution, and integration - temporal database design - views and reuse in conceptual modeling - advanced conceptual modeling - business process modeling and workflows - data warehouse design. Besides the selected papers, 3 invited papers present the views of three keynote speakers, internationally known for their contribution to conceptual modeling and database research and for their active role in knowledge dissemination. Peter Chen presents the results of his ongoing research on ER model, XML, and the Web. Georges Gardarin presents the first results of an ESPRIT project federating various data sources with XML and XML-QL. Finally, Matthias Jarke develops a way to capture and evaluate the experiences gained about process designs in so-called process data warehouses.

Since the late 1980s, the CAiSE conferences have provided a forum for the p- sentation and exchange of research results and practical experiences within the?eld of Information Systems Engineering. CAiSE 2001 was the 13th conference in this series and was held from 4th to 8th June 2001 in the resort of Int- laken located near the three famous Swiss mountains – the Eiger, M¨ onch, and Jungfrau. The?rst two days consisted of pre-conference workshops and tutorials. The workshop themes included requirements engineering, evaluation of modeling methods, data integration over the Web, agent-oriented information systems, and the design and management of data warehouses. Continuing the tradition of recent CAiSE conferences, there was also a doctoral consortium. The p- conference tutorials were on the themes of e-business models and XML appli- tion development. The main conference program included three invited speakers, two tuto- als, and a panel discussion in addition to presentations of thepapers in these proceedings. We also included a special ‘practice and experience'session to give presentersanopportunitytoreportonanddiscussexperiencesandinvestigations on the use of methods and technologies in practice. Weextendourthankstothemembersoftheprogramcommitteeandallother referees without whom such conferences would not be possible. The program committee, whose members came from 20 di?erent countries, selected 27 hi- quality research papers and 3 experience reports from a total of 97 submissions. The topics of these papers span the wide-range of topics relevant to information systems engineering – from requirements and design through to implementation and operation of complex and dynamic systems.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Advances in Information Systems (ADVIS) held in Izmir, Turkey, 23–25 October 2002. This conference was dedicated to the memory of Prof. Esen Ozkarahan. He was a great researcher who made an essential contribution to the development of information systems. Prof. Ozkarahan was one of the pioneers of database machine research and database systems in Turkey. This conference was organized by the Computer Engineering department of Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir. This department was established in 1994 by Prof. Ozkarahan and he worked there for the last?ve years of his life. The main goal of the conference was to bring together researchers from all around the world working in di?erent areas of information systems, to share new ideas and present their latest results. This time we received 94 submissions from 27 countries. The program committee selected 40 papers for presentation at the conference. During the conference a workshop was organized on the topic “New Information Technologies in Education”. The invited and accepted cont- butions cover a large variety of topics: general aspects of information systems, databases and data warehouses, information retrieval, multiagent systems and technologies, distributed and parallel computing, evolutionary algorithms and system programming, and new information technologies in education. The success of the conference was dependent upon the hard work of a large number of people. We gratefully acknowledge the members of the Program C- mittee who helped to coordinate the process of refereeing all submitted papers.

With advances in the Internet and technologies around the World-Wide Web, research on design, implementation, and management of Internet- and W- based information systems has become increasingly important. As more and more information of diverse type becomes available on the Internet and Web, query and retrieval as well as the management of information over the Internet become more complex and extremely di?cult. Novel approaches to develop and manage Internet and Web information systems are in high demand. Following the successful conferences in 2000, 2001 and 2002, WAIM 2003 continued to provide a forum for researchers, professionals, and industrial practitioners from around the world to share their rapidly evolving knowledge and to report on new advances in Web-based information systems. WAIM 2003 received an overwhelming 258 submissions from Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, UK, USA, and Vietnam. Through careful review by the program committee, 30 papers were selected as regular papers, and 16 papers as short papers. As indicated by these numbers, WAIM 2003 is extremely selective: 11 and 17 areas, respectively, including text management, data mining, information?ltering, moving objects, views, bioinformatics, Web and XML, multimedia, peer-to-peer systems, service networks, time-series streams, and ontologies. Two invited talks by Sushil Ja- dia (George Mason University, USA) and Beng Chin Ooi (National University of Singapore) were on access control models and peer-to-peer systems.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International Conference on COTS-Based Software Systems, ICCBSS 2003, held in Ottawa, Canada in February 2003. The 24 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers address all current issues on commcerial-off-the-shelf-systems, from the point of view of research and development as well as from the practitioner's application point of view.

The Third International Conference on E-commerce and Web Technology (EC-Web 2002) was held in conjunction with the DEXA 02 in Aix-en-Provence, France. This conference, first held in Greenwich, United Kingdom in 2000, is now in its third year and is very well established. As in the two previous years, it served as a forum bringing together researchers from academia and commercial developers from industry to discuss the current state of the art in E-commerce and web technology. Inspirations and new ideas emerged from intensive discussions during formal sessions and social events. Keynote addresses, research presentations, and discussions during the conference helped to further develop the exchange of ideas among the researchers, developers, and practitioners who attended. The conference attracted more than 100 submissions and each paper was reviewed by at least three program committee members. The program committee selected 40 papers for presentation and publication, a task which was not easy due to the high quality of the submitted papers. We would like to express our thanks to our colleagues who helped to put together the technical program: the program committee members and external reviewers for their timely and rigorous reviews of the papers, and the organizing committee for their help in the administrative work and support. We owe special thanks to Gabriela Wagner and Maria Schweikert for always being available when their helping hand was needed.

Examples abound in the?elds of database design, query languages, query optimization, concurrency control, statistical databases, and many others. ICDT is an international forum for research on the principles of database systems. From 1992, ICDT has been merged with another series of conferences on theoretical aspects of database systems, The Symposium on Mathematical Fundamentals of Database Systems (MFDBS), that was initiated in Dresden (1987), and continued in Visegrad (1989) and Rostock (1991). ICDT aims to enhance the exchange of ideas and cooperation in database research both within uni?ed Europe, and between Europe and the other continents. This volume contains a collection of selected papers presented at the Symposium on Conceptual Modeling, which was held in Los Angeles, California, on December 2, th 1997, immediately before the 16 International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER'97), which was held at UCLA. A total of eighteen papers were selected for inclusion in this volume. These papers are written by experts in the conceptual modeling area and represent the most current thinking of these experts. This volume also contains the summaries of three workshops that were held on 6 7 December 1997, immediately after the ER'97 conference at UCLA. The topics of these three workshops are: • Behavioral Modeling • Conceptual Modeling in Multimedia Information Seeking • What Is the Role of Cognition in Conceptual Modeling? Since these topics are not only very important but also very timely, we think it is appropriate to include the summary of these three workshops in this volume. Those readers interested in further investigating topics related to the three workshops can either look up the individual paper published on the Web or contact the authors directly. The summary paper by Chen at the beginning of this volume also includes the summary of several interesting speeches at the Symposium.

After a decade of major technical and theoretical advancements in the area, the scope for exploitation of database technology has never been greater. Neither has the challenge. This volume contains the proceedings of the 17th British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD 2000), held at the University of Exeter in July 2000. In selecting the quality papers presented here, the programme committee was p- ticularly interested in the demands being made on the technology by emerging application areas, including web applications, push technology, multimedia data, and data warehousing. The concern remains the same: satisfaction of user - quirements on quality and performance. However, with increasing demand for timely access to heterogeneous data distributed on an unregulated Internet, new challenges are presented. Our three invited speakers develop the theme for the conference, considering new dimensions concerning user requirements in accessing distributed, hete- geneous information sources. In the?rst paper presented here, Gio Wiederhold re?ects on the tension between requirements for, on the one hand, precision and relevance and on the other completeness and recall in relating data from heterogeneous resources. In resolving this tension in favour of the former, he maintains that this will fundamentally a?ect future research directions. Sharma Chakravarthy adds another dimension to the requirement on inf- mation, namely timeliness. He shares a vision of just-in-time information de- vered by a push technology based on reactive capabilities. He maintains that this requires a paradigm shift to a user-centric view of information.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th East European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems, ADBIS 2001, held in Vilnius, Lithuania, in September 2001.The 25 revised full papers presented together with one invited paper and two abstracts of invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 82 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on query optimization, multimedia and multilingual information systems, spatiotemporal aspects of databases, data mining, transaction processing, conceptual modeling and information systems specification, active databases, query methods, XML, and information systems design.

TheexplosivegrowthoftheInternetandtheWebhavecreatedanever-growing demand for information systems, and ever-growing challenges for Information Systems Engineering. The series of Conferences on Advanced Information S- tems Engineering (CAiSE) was launched in Scandinavia by Janis Bubenko and Arne Solvberg in 1989, became an important European conference, and was held annually in major European sites throughout the 1990s. Now, in its 14th year,CAiSEwasheldforthe?rsttimeoutsideEurope,showcasinginternational researchon information systems and their engineering. Not surprisingly, this year the conference enjoyed unprecedented attention. In total, the conference received 173 paper submissions, the highest number ever for a CAiSE conference. Of those, 42 were accepted as regular papers and 26 as short (poster) papers. In addition, the conference received 12 proposals for workshops of which 8 were approved, while 4 tutorials were selected from 15 submissions. The technical program was put together by an international committee of 81 experts. In total, 505 reviews were submitted, with every member of the committeecontributing.Decisionsonallsubmissionswerereachedataprogram committee meeting in Toronto on January 26-27,2002. Workshop and tutorial proposals were handled separately by committees chaired by Patrick Martin (workshops), and Jarek Gryz and Richard Paige (tutorials). We wish to extend a great “THANK YOU!” to all members of the program and organizing committees for their volunteer contributions of time and exp- tise. The fact that so many busy (and famous!) people took the trouble to help uswiththeorganizationofthisconferenceandtheformationofitstechnicalp- gram speaks well for the future of CAiSE and the?eld of Information Systems Engineering.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Thyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communication, IWDC 2001, held in Taormina, Italy in September 2001.The 46 revised full papers presented are a mix of invited papers and selected submitted papers and reflect the state of the art in multiservice IP network research and development. These proceedings contain the papers accepted for presentation at the Second International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2003) held on Sanibel Island, Florida, U. S. A., October 20–23, 2003. Following the success of ISWC 2002 that washeldinSardiniainJune2002,ISWC2003enjoyedagreatlyincreasedinterest in the conference themes. The number of submitted papers more than doubled compared with ISWC 2002 to 283. Of those, 262 were submitted to the research track and 21 to the industrial track. With rare exceptions, each submission was evaluated by three program committee members whose reviews were coordinated by members of the senior program committee. This year 49 papers in the research track and 9 papers in the industrial track were accepted. The high quality of ISWC 2003 was the result of the joint e?ort of many people. First of all we would like to thank the authors for their high-quality submissions and the members of the program committee for their reviewing and review coordination e?orts. The papers are organized in topical sections on spatial databases, spatio-temporal databases, XML, information modeling, database design, data integration, data warehouse, UML, conceptual models, systems design, method reengineering and video databases, workflows, web information systems, applications, and software engineering.

This volume contains the proceedings of the 21st international conference on the Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2001), organized under the auspices of the Indian Association for Research in Computing Science (IARCS). This year's conference attracted 73 submissions from 20 countries. Each s- mission was reviewed by at least three independent referees. In a departure from previous conferences, the?nal selection of the papers making up the program was done through an electronic discussion spanning two weeks, without a physical meeting of the Program Committee (PC). Since the PC of FSTTCS is distributed across the globe, it is very di?cult to?x a meeting whose time and venue is convenient for a substantial fraction of the PC. Given this, it was felt that an electronic discussion would enable all members to participate on a more equal footing in the?nal selection. All reviews, scores, and comments were posted on a secure website, with a mechanism for making updates and automatically sending noti?cations by email to relevant members of the PC. All PC members participated actively in the discussion. The general feedback on the arrangement was very positive, so we hope to continue this in future years. We had?ve invited speakers this year: Eric Allender, Sanjeev Arora, David Harel, Colin Stirling, and Uri Zwick. We thank them for having readily accepted our invitation to talk at the conference and for providing abstracts (and even full papers) for the proceedings.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on E-Commerce 2003, held in Prague, Czech Republic in September 2003. The 42 revised full papers presented together with an invited paper and a position paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 108 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on auctions, security, agents and search, ebXML, modeling and technology, XML, design and performance, business processes, and brokering and recommender systems.

E-services, and in particular Web services, are emerging as a promising tech- logy for the e?ective automation of application integration across networks and organizations. The basic technological infrastructure for e-services is structured around three major standards: SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. These standards p- vide building blocks for service description, discovery, and interaction. E-service technologies have clearly in?uenced positively the development of integrated - stems by providing programmatic access to e-services through SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. E-services are evolving toward being able to solve critical integ- tion issues including security, transactions, collaborative processes management, semantic aspects, and seamless integration with existing middleware infrastr- tures. VLDB-TES 2003 was the fourth workshop in a successful series of annual workshops on technologies for E-services, held in conjunction with the VLDB conference. The objective of VLDB-TES 2003 was to bring together researchers, practitioners,anduserstoexchangenewideas,developments,andexperienceson issues related to E-services. VLDB-TES 2003 took place in Berlin, Germany. It featured the presentation of 16 regular papers. In addition to the presentation of research papers, the workshop included two invited talks and a panel discussion.

The International Conference on Networking (ICN01) is the first conference in its series aimed at stimulating technical exchange in the emerging and important field of networking. On behalf of the International Advisory Committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the International Conference on Networking. Integration of fixed and portable wirele ss access into IP and ATM networks presents a cost effective and eff icient way to provide seamless end to end connectivity and ubiquitous access in a market where demands on Mobile and Cellular Networks have grown rapidly and predicted to generate billions of dollars in revenue. The deployment of broadband IP based technologies over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and integration of IP with broadband wireless access networks (BWANs) are becoming increasingly important. In addition, fixed core IP/ATM networks are constructed with recent move to IP/MPLS over DWDM. More over, mobility introduces further challenges in the area that have neither been fully understood nor resolved in the preceding network generation. This first Conference ICN01 has been very well perceived by the International networking community. A total of 300 papers from 39 countries were submitted, from which 168 have been accepted. Each paper has been reviewed by several members of the scientific Program Committee.

The rapid growth of the Internet and related services is changing the way we work, act, and even think in a manner that far exceeds the prediction set by?eld experts not long ago. It is now common belief that the Internet and its various applications covering both hardware appliances and software products will play an increasingly important role in everybody's daily lives. It is also our strong belief that the importance of the collaborative research and development e?orts focusing on the Internet among academia, industry, and regulating government bodies cannot be overemphasized. It is our great pleasure to hold the First International Workshop on - vanced Internet Services and Applications (AISA) 2002. The workshop is aimed to provide an international forum to share new ideas and research results in the area of the list of workshop topics. Under the main theme “Advances in Int- net Services and Applications”, the workshop topics include QoS architecture, reliability, security, web acceleration, reverse/proxy caching schemes, content delivery network, distributed/fault-tolerant architecture, storage/backup so- tions, media and streaming server, switching technology, and home networking. We have solicited papers on these topics and attracted paper submissions from technically renowned organizations.

As for the 2002 edition in Irvine, the organizers wanted to stimulate this cross-pollination with a program of shared famous keynote speakers (this year we got Sycara, - ble, Soley and Mylopoulos!), and encouraged multiple attendance by providing authors with free access to another conference or workshop of their choice. We received an even larger number of submissions than last year for the three conferences (360 in total) and the workshops (170 in total). Not only can we therefore again claim a measurable success in attracting a representative volume of scienti?c papers, but such a harvest allowed the program committees of course to compose a high-quality cross-section of worldwide research in the areas covered. In spite of the increased number of submissions, the Program Chairs of the three main conferences decided to accept only approximately the same number of papers for presentation and publication as in 2002 (i. e., around 1 paper out of every 4–5 submitted). For the workshops, the acceptance rate was about 1 in 2. Also for this reason, we decided to separate the proceedings into two volumes with their own titles, and we are grateful to Springer-Verlag for their collaboration in producing these two books. The reviewing process by the respective program committees was very professional and each paper in the main conferences was reviewed by at least three referees.

Multimedia Interactive Protocols and Systems (MIPS) is the brand new name of a workshop that has been successfully held for the?rst time in 2002 in Coimbra, as the?rst joint edition of two well established series of workshops: Interactive Distributed Multimedia Systems (IDMS) and Protocols for Multimedia Systems (PROMS). The area covered by Multimedia Interactive Protocols and Systems is indeed broad, since it includes technical and practical issues related to d- tributed multimedia technologies, applications and services, with emphasis on their deployment over next generation networks. The topics set for MIPS 2003 were: mobile and wireless multimedia systems; multimedia middleware and communication protocols; Quality of Service issues; resource management for multimedia services; active and programmable netw- king for multimedia applications; mobile agents for multimedia; multimedia d- tribution and transport; tra?c engineering and service engineering; ubiquitous computing; networked audio-video devices; development tools for distributed multimedia applications; multimedia applications such as video-on-demand, - gital video libraries, video games, virtual community, teleworking, teleteaching, e-commerce, virtual reality simulations; performance of protocols and applica- ons;contentmanagement;serviceaccess;security,authentication,privacy,wat- marking; accounting and tari? policing for multimedia teleservices; multimedia encoding and compression. The Call for Papers attracted more than 130 submissions from Europe, Asia and the Americas, covering most of the proposed topics. With the help of a very dedicated Program Committee and of a number of associate reviewers, subm- sions were carefully evaluated, with an average of three reviewers for each paper.

NGITS2002 was the?fth workshop of its kind, promoting papers that discuss new technologies in information systems. Following the success of the four p- vious workshops (1993, 1995, 1997, and 1999), the?fth NGITS Workshop took place on June 24–25, 2002, in the ancient city of Caesarea. In response to the Call for Papers, 22 papers were submitted. Each paper was evaluated by three Program Committee members. We accepted 11 papers from 3 continents and 5 countries, Israel (5 papers), US (3 papers), Germany, Cyprus, and The Netherlands (1 paper from each). The workshop program consisted of?ve paper sessions, two keynote lectures, and one panel discussion. The topics of the paper sessions are: Advanced Query Processing, Web Applications, Moving Objects, Advanced Information Models, and Advanced Software Engineering. We would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers, the program committee members, the presenters, and everybody who assisted in making NGITS2002 a reality.
