The Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM) conference is an annual event encompassing four main themes: fuzzy theory, algorithms and systems, which includes topics like stability, foundations and control; fuzzy application, which covers different kinds of processing as well as hardware and architectures for big data and time series and has wide applicability; the interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic and data mining, encompassing applications in electrical, industrial, chemical and engineering fields as well as management and environmental issues; and data mining, outlining new approaches to big data, massive data, scalable, parallel and distributed algorithms. The annual conference provides a platform for knowledge exchange between international experts, researchers, academics and delegates from industry. This book includes the papers accepted and presented at the 5th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM 2019), held in Kitakyushu, Japan on 18-21 October 2019. This year, FSDM received 442 submissions. All papers were carefully reviewed by program committee members, taking account of the quality, novelty, soundness, breadth and depth of the research topics falling within the scope of FSDM. The committee finally decided to accept 137 papers, which represents an acceptance rate of about 30%. The papers presented here are arranged in two sections: Fuzzy Sets and Data Mining, and Communications and Networks. Providing an overview of the most recent scientific and technological advances in the fields of fuzzy systems and data mining, the book will be of interest to all those working in these fields.

In its classical form, the study of argumentation focuses on human-oriented uses of argument, such as whether an argument is legitimate or flawed, engagement in debate, or the rhetorical aspects of argumentation. In recent decades, however, the study of logic and computational models of argumentation has emerged as a growing sub-area of AI. This book presents the Seventh International Conference on Computational Models of Argument (COMMA'18), held in Warsaw, Poland, from 12 to 14 September 2018. Since its inception in 2006, the conference and its related activities have developed alongside the steady growth of interest in computational argumentation worldwide, and the selection of 25 full papers and 17 short papers, out of a total of 70 submissions, and 15 demonstration abstracts included here reflect the broad multidisciplinary nature of argumentation and the increasing body of work which establishes the relevance of computational models to various disciplines and real world applications. Subjects covered include: algorithm development; innovative applications; argument mining, argumentation-based models of dialogue; abstract argument frameworks; and structured argumentation. FOIS is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications (IAOA). Its interdisciplinary research focus lies at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science, as well as in the applications of ontological analysis to conceptual modeling, knowledge engineering, knowledge management, information-systems development, library and information science, scientific research, and semantic technologies in general. This volume presents the proceedings of FOIS 2018, held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 19-21 September. It was the 10th edition and 20th anniversary of the conference series. Controlled natural languages (CNLs) are based on natural language and apply restrictions on vocabulary, grammar, and/or semantics. They fall broadly into 3 groups. Some are designed to improve communication for non-native speakers of the respective natural language; in others, the restrictions are to facilitate the use of computers to analyze texts, for example, to improve computer-aided translation; and a third group of CNLs are designed to enable reliable automated reasoning and formal knowledge representation from seemingly natural texts. This book presents the 11 papers, selected from 14 submitted, and delivered at the sixth in the series of workshops on Controlled Natural Language, (CNL 2018), held in Maynooth, Ireland, in August 2018. The papers cover a full spectrum of controlled natural languages, ranging from human oriented to machine-processable controlled languages and from more theoretical results to interfaces, reasoning engines, and the real-life application of CNLs. Big Data Analytics is on the rise in the last years of the current decade. Data are overwhelming the computation capacity of high performance servers. Cloud, grid, edge and fog computing are a few examples of the current hype. Computational Intelligence offers two faces to deal with the development of models: on the one hand, the crisp approach, which considers for every variable an exact value and, on the other hand, the fuzzy focus, which copes with values between two boundaries. This book presents 114 papers from the 4th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM 2018), held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 16 to 19 November 2018. Artificial intelligence as applied to the legal domain has gained momentum thanks to the large, annotated corporate legal and case-law collections, human chats, and social media information now available in open data. Often represented in XML or other Semantic Web technologies, these now make it possible to use the AI theory developed by the JURIX community in over thirty years of research. Innovative machine and deep-learning techniques with which to classify legal texts and detect terms, principles, concepts, evidence, named entities, and rules are also emerging, and the last five years have seen a gradual increase in their practical application. This book presents papers from the 31st International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (JURIX 2018), held in Groningen, the Netherlands, in December 2018. The support of the Dutch Foundation for Legal Knowledge Based Systems for the JURIX conference has transformed a domestic workshop into an international event, with theoretical contributions, applied work, demo prototypes, a hackathon, and a doctoral consortium. Of the 72 submissions received, 17 full papers and 11 short papers were selected for publication, representing an acceptance rate of approximately 38%. Machine learning for the legal domain prevails in the JURIX 2018 program, with traditional research mainstreams concerning legal reasoning and argumentation, natural-language processing, legal-text retrieval, and legal semantic modelling. An emerging topic is blockchain, which has graduated from the workshop area to the main program. The book offers an overview of the ways in which innovative information technologies are merging with legal theory, argumentation, and practice.

Robots are predicted to play a role in many aspects of our lives in the future, affecting work, personal relationships, education, business, law, medicine and the arts. As they become increasingly intelligent, autonomous, and communicative, they will be able to function in ever more complex physical and social surroundings, transforming the practices, organizations, and societies in which they are embedded. This book presents the proceedings of the Robophilosophy 2018 conference, held in Vienna, Austria, from 14 to 7 February 2018. The third event in the Robophilosophy Conference Series, the conference was entitled Envisioning Robots in Society – Politics, Power, and Public Space. Information modelling and knowledge bases are now essential, not only to academics working in computer science, but also wherever information technology is applied. This book presents papers from the 26th International Conference on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases (formerly the European Japanese Conference – EJC), which took place in Tampere, Finland, in June 2016. Like every other walk of modern life, the law has embraced digital technology, and is increasingly reliant on information systems for its efficient functioning. This book presents papers from the 30th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (JURIX 2017), held in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, in December 2017. In the three decades since they began, the JURIX conferences have been held under the auspices of the Dutch Foundation for Legal Knowledge Based Systems, and have become a fully European conference series which addresses familiar topics and extends known techniques, as well as exploring newer topics such as question answering and the use of data mining and machine learning. Of the 42 submissions received for this edition, 12 have been selected for publication as full papers and 13 as short papers, with an acceptance rate of around 59%. The papers address a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence and law, such as argumentation, norms, evidence, belief revision, citations, case-based reasoning and ontologies. Diverse techniques such as information retrieval and extraction, machine learning, semantic web, and network analysis were applied, among others, and textual sources include legal cases, bar examinations, and legislative/regulatory documents. The book will be of interest to all those working in the legal system who wish to keep abreast of the latest developments in information systems.

Data science is proving to be one of the major trends of the second decade of the 21st century. Artificial intelligence in all its forms is increasingly interwoven into all our lives, and remains one of the most lively areas of discussion and interest in technology today. This book presents the proceedings of the 20th International Conference of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (CCIA'2017): ‘Recent Advances in Artificial Intelligence Research and Development', held in Deltebre, Terres de l'Ebre, Spain, in October 2017. Despite its title, this annual conference is not only for researchers from the Catalan Countries, but is an international event which attracts participants from countries all around the world. As a vibrant area of computer science which continues to develop rapidly, AI is a field in which fresh ideas and new perspectives are of particular interest. This book presents the proceedings of the 8th European Starting AI Researcher Symposium (STAIRS 2016), held as a satellite event of the 22nd European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI) in The Hague, the Netherlands, in August 2016. The Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (ACIA) was formed in 1994 with the aim of promoting cooperation between researchers in artificial intelligence within the Catalan speaking community. This objective has been achieved and widened since the association held their first conference in 1998, and the annual conference of the association has become an international event presenting and discussing the latest research in AI, which attracts AI researchers from around the world. For almost twenty years the Catalan Association of Artificial Intelligence (ACIA) has been promoting cooperation between researchers in artificial intelligence within the Catalan speaking community. This book contains papers presented at the fifth international conference ‘Human Language Technologies – The Baltic Perspective (Baltic HLT 2012)', held in Tartu, Estonia, in October 2012. Baltic HLT provides a special venue for new and ongoing work in computational linguistics and related disciplines, both in the Baltic states and in a broader geographical perspective. It brings together scientists, developers, providers and users of HLT, and is a forum for the sharing of new ideas and recent advances in human language processing, promoting cooperation between the research communities of computer science and linguistics from the Baltic countries and the rest of the world. Twenty long papers, as well as the posters or demos accepted for presentation at the conference, are published here. They cover a wide range of topics: morphological disambiguation, dependency syntax and valency, computational semantics, named entities, dialogue modeling, terminology extraction and management, machine translation, corpus and parallel corpus compiling, speech modeling and multimodal communication. Some of the papers also give a general overview of the state of the art of human language technology and language resources in the Baltic states. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the use and application of computational linguistics and related disciplines.

One hundred years after the birth of Alan Turing, the great pioneer of computer science, artificial intelligence has become so much a part of everyday life that it is hard to imagine the world without it. This book contains papers from the 15th International Conference of the Catalan Association of Artificial Intelligence (CCIA 2012), held at the Universitat d'Alicant, Spain, in October 2012. Since 1994 the Catalan Association of Artificial Intelligence (ACIA) has fostered cooperation between researchers in artificial intelligence within the Catalan speaking community. The annual CCIA is its international conference, a platform where not only researchers from Catalan speaking countries, but also those working in artificial intelligence worldwide, have found a place to show, discuss and publish the results of their researches and developments. The 23 papers presented here, which include contributions from the AI community all over the world, cover topics such as KDD, DM and machine learning; natural language processing and recommenders; computer vision; robotics; AI for optimization problems and AI applications in the real world. The book also includes the contributions of the two invited keynote speakers at the conference - Oscar Cordón and Eduardo Nebot - which respectively address the subjects of real-world applications of soft artificial intelligence, and challenges of automation and safety in field robotics.

The subject of argumentation has been studied since ancient times, but it has seen major innovations since the advent of the computer age. Software already exists which can create and evaluate arguments in high-stake situations, such as medical diagnosis and criminal investigation; formal systems can help us appreciate the role of the value judgments which underlie opposing positions; and it is even possible to enter into argumentative dialogues as if playing a computer game. This book presents the 28 full papers, 17 short papers and a number of system demonstrations, described in an extended abstract, from the 2012 biennial Computational Models of Argument (COMMA) conference, held in Vienna, Austria. Papers by the invited speakers Professor Trevor Bench-Capon, Professor Erik Krabbe and Professor Keith Stenning are also included. This year, for the first time, COMMA invited the submission of papers for an innovative applications track, and those which were accepted for presentation are included in this volume. Argumentation can be studied from many angles, including the artificial, natural and theoretical systems perspective. Presentations at the 2012 conference addressed the subject from these perspectives and many more.

This book contains the proceedings of the 11th Scandinavian Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI), held in Trondheim in May 2011. It presents 17 full papers and an additional six short papers and posters carefully selected from the submissions after thorough peer review. The papers are arranged in four main sections: machine learning, planning, application of AI and robotics and cognition. Topics covered in the first section include: performance user centered qualities generated by supervised learning algorithms; parallel implementation of the random forests algorithm and a spatial clustering algorithm for management zone delineation. The planning section includes papers on parallel plans; including velocity constraints for trajectory planning on grids; and path consistency to solve the Boolean satisfiability problem. This book presents the proceedings of the Annual International Conference on Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures, BICA 2011, which is also the Second Annual Meeting of the BICA Society (http://bicasociety.org), held in November 2011 in Arlington, Virginia, USA. A Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architecture (BICA) is a computational framework for the design of intelligent agents that incorporates formal mechanisms of human or animal cognition. Biology currently provides the only physical examples of cognitive systems at the level of robustness, flexibility, scalability and consciousness that artificial intelligence aspires to achieve. The main body of this volume consists of more than 70 research papers, position papers and abstracts presented at the BICA 2011 conference, the focus of which was on the challenge of replicating the human mind in a computer. The BICA approach to this challenge involves a diverse range of current topics in computer and brain sciences, from artificial intelligence and computational linguistics to cognitive modeling and system neuroscience, all represented here. This main body is followed by two supplementary parts: a manifesto and a review section. The introductory chapter to the book provides a brief overview of its contents. 'Telehealth – the delivery of health services and clinical information from a distance – has reached new levels with the communication revolution of the last decade: consumer videoconferencing, mobile devices, high bandwidth infrastructure and close range wireless sensor networks have made many advances possible in the field. New specialized clinical applications and markets have also emerged. These include tele-homecare, tele-rehabilitation and tele-emergency, surveillance and disaster response, while ides which once seemed futuristic, such as tele-procedures and tele-surgery, are now seen as being within the realms of possibility. This volume contains the proceedings of the eleventh International Conference on Intelligent Autonomous Systems (IAS-11) at the University of Ottawa in Canada. The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was initially directly aimed at the construction of ‘thinking machines'– that is, computer systems with human-like general intelligence. But this task proved more difficult than expected. As the years passed, AI researchers gradually shifted focus to producing AI systems that intelligently approached specific tasks in relatively narrow domains. In recent years, however, more and more AI researchers have recognized the necessity – and the feasibility – of returning to the original goal of the field. Increasingly, there is a call to focus less on highly specialized ‘narrow AI'problem solving systems, and more on confronting the difficult issues involved in creating ‘human-level intelligence', and ultimately general intelligence that goes beyond the human level in various ways. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), as this renewed focus has come to be called, attempts to study and reproduce intelligence as a whole in a domain independent way. Encouraged by the recent success of several smaller-scale AGI-related meetings and special tracks at conferences, the initiative to organize the very first international conference on AGI was taken, with the goal to give researchers in the field an opportunity to present relevant research results and to exchange ideas on topics of common interest. There is no denying the increasing importance of AI and human-computer interaction for societies worldwide. The potential for good in these fields is undeniable, but the challenges which arise during research and in practice must be carefully managed if this potential for good is to be realized without harm. This book presents the proceedings of ArtInHCI2023, the 1st International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction, held as an online event from 27-28 October 2023, and attended by around 70 participants from around the world. The aim of the conference was to promote academic exchange within and across disciplines, addressing theoretical and practical challenges and advancing current understanding and application. A total of 72 submissions were received for the conference, of which 41 were selected for presentation and publication following a thorough peer review process, resulting in an acceptance rate of 57%. FOIS is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications, a non-profit organization which promotes interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science. This book presents the papers delivered at FOIS 2023, the 13th edition of the Formal Ontology in Information Systems conference. The event was held as a sequentially-hybrid event, face-to-face in Sherbrooke, Canada, from 17 to 20 July 2023, and online from 18 to 20 September 2023. In total, 62 articles from 19 different countries were submitted, out of which 25 were accepted for inclusion in the conference and for publication; corresponding to an acceptance rate of 40 percent. The contributions are separated into the book's three sections: (1) Foundational ontological issues; (2) Methodological issues around the development, alignment, verification and use of ontologies; and (3) Domain ontologies and ontology-based applications. Fuzzy systems and data mining are indispensible aspects of the digital technology on which we now all depend. Fuzzy logic is intrinsic to applications in the electrical, chemical and engineering industries, and also in the fields of management and environmental issues. Neuro-symbolic AI is an emerging subfield of Artificial Intelligence that brings together two hitherto distinct approaches. ”Neuro” refers to the artificial neural networks prominent in machine learning, ”symbolic” refers to algorithmic processing on the level of meaningful symbols, prominent in knowledge representation. In the past, these two fields of AI have been largely separate, with very little crossover, but the so-called “third wave” of AI is now bringing them together. This book, Neuro-Symbolic Artificial Intelligence: The State of the Art, provides an overview of this development in AI. The two approaches differ significantly in terms of their strengths and weaknesses and, from a cognitive-science perspective, there is a question as to how a neural system can perform symbol manipulation, and how the representational differences between these two approaches can be bridged. The book presents 17 overview papers, all by authors who have made significant contributions in the past few years and starting with a historic overview first seen in 2016.
