Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly developing field of computer science which integrates multiple disciplines such as computer science, psychology, and philosophy. It is a technology that develops theories, methods, technologies, and application systems to simulate, extend, and expand human intelligence by attempting to understand its essence, producing a new, intelligent machine that can respond in a way similar to human intelligence. Artificial intelligence now plays an increasingly important role in the development of global industries and economies, and as such is currently changing our world significantly, making AI research a hot topic worldwide. This book presents the proceedings of ICICTA 2023, the 16th International Conference on Intelligent Computing Technology and Automation, held on 24-25 October 2023 in Xi'an, China. The conference is an annual forum dedicated to emerging and challenging topics in AI and its applications, and its aim is to bring together an international community of researchers and practitioners in the field of AI to share the latest research achievements, discuss recent advances influence future direction, and promote the diffusion of the discipline throughout the scientific community at large. A total of 322 submissions were received for ICICTA 2023, and each paper received at least 2 review reports in a rigorous peer-review procedure. Based on these reports, 141 papers were ultimately accepted and are included in this book. The book offers a current overview of developments in AI technology, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly developing field of computer science which now plays an increasingly important role in many disciplines. A catalyst for significant change, research into AI is of particular importance in fields such as medicine and education, and as such has become an area to watch for many people worldwide. This book presents the proceedings of AIMEE 2023, the 7th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Medical Engineering and Education, held on 9 and 10 November 2023 in Guangzhou, China. The conference brought together top international researchers from around the world to exchange research results and address open issues in AI, medical engineering and education. A total of 238 submissions were received for AIMEE 2023, of which 89 papers were selected for presentation and publication after a rigorous international peer review process. This book presents the proceedings of COMMA 2024, the 10th biennial International Conference on Computational Models of Argument, held from 18 to 20 September 2024 in Hagen, Germany. The COMMA conference series provides a dedicated forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest advancements in this interdisciplinary field, covering basic research, systems and innovative applications and nurturing the steady growth of interest in computational-argumentation research worldwide. A total of 63 submissions was received for the conference, and after a thorough review process 26 were accepted as full papers, with a further 12 accepted as demos accompanied by an extended abstract, and 2 as full papers with accompanying demo, resulting in an acceptance rate of 53% for full papers and 63% for papers and demo abstracts combined. In addition to these 40 papers, extended abstracts of the 3 invited talks are also included here: Semantics in Argumentation: Classifications and Challenges, by Leila Amgoud; Expanding the Scope of Bayesian Argumentation, by Ulrike Hahn; and The Long Road to Trustworthy Natural Language Argumentation, by Serena Villata. The book provides a fascinating overview of current research and innovations, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Applied intelligence, integrated with software, is an essential enabler for science and the new economy, creating new markets and new directions for a more reliable, flexible and robust society and empowering the exploration of our world in ever more depth. The available software, however, often falls short of expectations, with current methodologies, tools, and techniques still neither robust enough nor sufficiently reliable to adequately serve a constantly changing and evolving market. This proceedings presents 40 papers delivered at SoMeT 24, the 23rd edition of the International Conference on New Trends in Intelligent Software Methodology Tools, and Techniques, held on 24 and 25 September 2024 in Cancun, Mexico. The conference explored new trends and theories, illuminating the direction of developments by discussing issues ranging from research practices to techniques and methodologies and proposing and reporting on the solutions needed for global world business, and this book aims to capture the essence of a new state-of-the-art in software science and its supporting technologies, and to identify the challenges that such technologies will have to master. The 40 papers included here were carefully selected following a thorough review process on the basis of technical soundness, relevance, originality, significance, and clarity, whereby each paper was reviewed by three or four reviewers. Developments in AI are occurring rapidly, with new applications constantly on the increase, and one of the areas in which interesting developments are always taking place is that of intelligent equipment and special robots. This book presents papers from ICIESR 2023, the 2nd International Conference on Intelligent Equipment and Special Robots, held from 20 to 22 October 2023 in Qingdao, China. The conference series has established a platform for experts, researchers, and students working in related fields to present, exchange, and discuss the latest advances and developments, linking various branches of science and technology. It promotes innovation in, and the application of, intelligent equipment and special robots, and fosters the development of related industries, and this year's conference brought together 180 participants. A total of 206 submissions was received for the conference, of which 185 were selected for peer review, in the course of which they were evaluated for theme, structure, method, content, language, and format. Of these, 80 papers were accepted for presentation and publication, resulting in an acceptance rate of 39%. Topics covered include intelligent detection technology, smart manufacturing, artificial intelligence, mechatronics technology, and creative and entertaining robots, among others. Providing a current overview of recent developments in the field, the book will be of interest to all those whose work relates to intelligent equipment and special robots.

Semantic systems encompass a variety of technologies that play a fundamental role in our daily lives, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, knowledge graphs and ontology engineering, and enterprise vocabulary management. This book presents the proceedings of SEMANTiCS 2024, the 20th International Conference on Semantic Systems, held from 17 to 19 September 2024 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The conference has become recognized as important international event providing a regular opportunity for professionals and researchers actively engaged in harnessing the power of semantic computing and artificial intelligence to gather and discuss the possibilities and practical limitations of various transformative technologies. These include semantic web and artificial intelligence, as well as areas such as data science, machine learning, logic programming, content engineering, social computing, natural language processing, digital humanities, and many more. A total of 95 submissions were received for the conference. These were subjected to a double-anonymous peer review process, with a minimum of 3 independent reviews for each submission, after which 26 papers were accepted for presentation and publication, representing an acceptance rate of 27%. The papers are divided into 6 sections: knowledge engineering with large language models; embeddings and machine learning on knowledge graphs; ontologies and knowledge graphs; linked data management; question answering and querying systems; and digital humanities and cultural heritage. Providing an overview of emerging trends and themes within the vast field of semantic computing and artificial intelligence, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

In its broadest sense, artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence exhibited by machines; computer systems in particular. Founded as an academic discipline in 1956, it was not until 2012, when deep learning outperformed previous AI techniques, that interest and investment increased enormously, ultimately leading to the situation today where it is sometimes hard for us to imagine a life without AI. This book presents the proceedings of CCIA2024, the 26th edition of the International Conference of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence, held from 2 – 4 October 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. The CCIA conferences now serve as a forum to bring together participants working on AI research from around the world. A total of 68 papers was received for the conference, and this book contains 26 long papers, 19 short papers, and 4 long abstracts (49 papers) which were ultimately accepted following a thorough peer review process, resulting in an acceptance rate of 72%. These are divided into 5 sections: machine learning and deep learning applications; natural language processing (NLP); artificial intelligence ethics and decision support systems; robotics and autonomous systems; and specialized applications of AI, and cover a wide range of AI domains, such as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, data science, and reinforcement learning. Critical AI applications across a number of fields are explored, including healthcare, smart services, environmental monitoring, and manufacturing, and topics such as the ethical considerations of AI, voice cloning, and decision-making support systems are also examined. Providing a current overview of new developments and ideas, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field of AI development.

The field of hybrid human-artificial intelligence (HHAI), although primarily driven by developments in AI, also requires fundamentally new approaches and solutions. Multidisciplinary in nature, it calls for collaboration across various research domains, such as AI, HCI, the cognitive and social sciences, philosophy and ethics, and complex systems, to name but a few. This book presents the proceedings of HHAI 2024, the 3rd International Conference on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence, held from 10-14 June 2024 in Malmö, Sweden. The focus of HHAI 2024 was on artificially-intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively and purposefully with humans, amplifying rather than replacing human intelligence. A total of 62 submissions were received for the main track of the conference, of which 31 were accepted for presentation after a thorough double blind review process. These comprised 9 full papers, 5 blue sky papers, and 17 working papers, making the final acceptance rate for full papers 29%. Acceptance rate across all tracks of the main program was 50%. This book contains all submissions accepted for the main track, as well as the proposals for the Doctoral Consortium and extended abstracts from the Posters and Demos track. Topics covered include human-AI interaction and collaboration; learning, reasoning and planning with humans and machines in the loop; fair, ethical, responsible, and trustworthy AI; societal awareness of AI; and the role of design and compositionality of AI systems in interpretable/collaborative AI, among others. Artificial intelligence, or AI, now affects the day-to-day life of almost everyone on the planet, and continues to be a perennial hot topic in the news. This book presents the proceedings of ECAI 2023, the 26th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, and of PAIS 2023, the 12th Conference on Prestigious Applications of Intelligent Systems, held from 30 September to 4 October 2023 and on 3 October 2023 respectively in Kraków, Poland. Since 1974, ECAI has been the premier venue for presenting AI research in Europe, and this annual conference has become the place for researchers and practitioners of AI to discuss the latest trends and challenges in all subfields of AI, and to demonstrate innovative applications and uses of advanced AI technology. ECAI 2023 received 1896 submissions – a record number – of which 1691 were retained for review, ultimately resulting in an acceptance rate of 23%. The 390 papers included here, cover topics including machine learning, natural language processing, multi agent systems, and vision and knowledge representation and reasoning. PAIS 2023 received 17 submissions, of which 10 were accepted after a rigorous review process. Those 10 papers cover topics ranging from fostering better working environments, behavior modeling and citizen science to large language models and neuro-symbolic applications, and are also included here. Presenting a comprehensive overview of current research and developments in AI, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Semantic computing is an integral part of modern technology, an essential component of fields as diverse as artificial intelligence, data science, knowledge discovery and management, big data analytics, e-commerce, enterprise search, technical documentation, document management, business intelligence, and enterprise vocabulary management. The term ‘intelligent environment'(IE) refers to a physical space that is enhanced by digital technologies. Such environments are designed to improve the quality of life of the people who live or work in them, and are equipped with technologies such as sensing systems and artificial intelligence which can detect changes in the environment, anticipate user requirements, and provide personalized services and experiences to users. The concept of Big Data has become increasingly familiar in recent years, and it is already an indispensible tool in the management of everything from supply chains and transport to health and education. One important area to which they have particularly close links is lifelong education. If only it were possible to develop automated and trainable neural systems that could justify their behavior in a way that could be interpreted by humans like a symbolic system. The field of Neurosymbolic AI aims to combine two disparate approaches to AI; symbolic reasoning and neural or connectionist approaches such as Deep Learning. The quest to unite these two types of AI has led to the development of many innovative techniques which extend the boundaries of both disciplines. This book, Compendium of Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence, presents 30 invited papers which explore various approaches to defining and developing a successful system to combine these two methods. Each strategy has clear advantages and disadvantages, with the aim of most being to find some useful middle ground between the rigid transparency of symbolic systems and the more flexible yet highly opaque neural applications. The papers are organized by theme, with the first four being overviews or surveys of the field. These are followed by papers covering neurosymbolic reasoning; neurosymbolic architectures; various aspects of Deep Learning; and finally two chapters on natural language processing. All papers were reviewed internally before publication. The book is intended to follow and extend the work of the previous book, Neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence: The state of the art (IOS Press; 2021) which laid out the breadth of the field at that time. Neurosymbolic AI is a young field which is still being actively defined and explored, and this book will be of interest to those working in AI research and development.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been much in the news recently, with some commentators expressing concern that AI might eventually replace humans. But many developments in AI are designed to enhance and supplement the performance of humans rather than replace them, and a novel field of study, with new approaches and solutions to the development of AI, has arisen to focus on this aspect of the technology. This book presents the proceedings of HHAI2023, the 2nd International Conference on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence, held from 26-30 June 2023, in Munich, Germany. The HHAI international conference series is focused on the study of artificially intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively, responsibly and purposefully with humans, amplifying rather than replacing human intelligence, and invites contributions from various fields, including AI, human-computer interaction, the cognitive and social sciences, computer science, philosophy, among others. A total of 78 submissions were received for the main conference track, and most papers were reviewed by at least three reviewers. The overall final acceptance rate was 43%, with 14 contributions accepted as full papers, 14 as working papers, and 6 as extended abstracts. The papers presented here cover topics including interactive hybrid agents; hybrid intelligence for decision support; hybrid intelligence for health; and values such as fairness and trust in hybrid intelligence. We further accepted 17 posters and 4 demos as well as 8 students to the first HHAI doctoral consortium this year. The authors of 4 working papers and 2 doctoral consortium submissions opted for not publishing their submissions to allow a later full submission, resulting in a total of 57 papers included in this proceedings Addressing all aspects of AI systems that assist humans and emphasizing the need for adaptive, collaborative, responsible, interactive, and human-centered artificial intelligence systems which can leverage human strengths and compensate for human weaknesses while considering social, ethical, and legal considerations, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

The digital era has brought about important changes that continue to affect all our lives. Efficient management and storage of digital information has become crucial, as has the ability to access that information quickly and efficiently, and priorities are to allow for the saving of digital data in many different ways, and to avoid the loss of information in the event of a malfunction. This book presents the 65 papers presented at DMI2022, the first in the new annual conference series Digitalization and Management Innovation (DMI), held as a hybrid event in Beijing, China, on 26 November 2022. A total of 190 submissions were received for the conference, and the papers presented here were selected after careful and conscientious review, bearing in mind the breadth and depth of the research topics falling within the scope of digital and management innovation and resulting in an acceptance rate of 34%. Topics covered include digital transformation, supply chains, business models, and block chain, enterprises, banking, and sustainability, as well as policy in artificial intelligence, the gig economy, the post-epidemic era, green supply, citizenship behavior, human resource management, human relationships, agriculture, and environmental matters. Presenting original ideas and results of general significance and supported by clear reasoning, and compelling evidence and methods, the book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the management of digital data.

Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS) is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications, a non-profit organization promoting interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science. This book presents the 11 papers accepted for the 12th edition of FOIS. The conference was held from 13-17 September 2021 in Bozen-Bolzano, Italy, as a hybrid event with some participants attending on-site in Bolzano and others attending virtually online. The papers are divided into 3 sections and cover a wide range of topics: (1) Foundations, addressing fundamental issues; (2) Applications and Methods, presenting novel uses, systems, tools, and approaches; and (3) Domain Ontology, describing well-formed ontologies in particular subject areas.

In recent years, interest within the research community and the legal industry regarding technological advances in legal knowledge representation and processing has been growing. This relates to areas such as computational models of legal reasoning, cybersecurity, privacy, trust and blockchain methods, among other things. This book presents the proceedings of JURIX 2022, the 35th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems, held from 14 –16 December in Saarbrücken, Germany, under the auspices of the Dutch Foundation for Legal Knowledge Based Systems and hosted by Saarland University. The annual JURIX conference has become an international forum for academics and professionals to exchange knowledge and experiences at the intersection of law and artificial intelligence (AI). For this edition, 62 submissions were received from 163 authors in 24 countries. Following a rigorous review process, carried out by a programme committee of 72 experts recognised in the field, 14 submissions were selected for publication as long papers, 22 as short papers and 5 as demo papers, making a total of 41 papers altogether and representing a 22.5% acceptance rate for long papers (66.1% overall). The broad array of topics covered includes argumentation and legal reasoning, legal ontologies and the semantic web, machine and deep learning and natural language processing for legal knowledge extraction, as well as argument mining, translation of legal texts, defeasible logic, legal compliance, explainable AI, alternative dispute resolution, legal drafting and smart contracts. Providing an overview of recent advances, the book will be of interest to all those working at the interface between the law and AI.

Argumentation has traditionally been studied across a number of fields, notably philosophy, cognitive science, linguistics and jurisprudence. Computational models of argumentation have been identified and used since the 1980s, and more recently an important role for argumentation in leading to principled decisions has emerged in several settings. Traditionally concerned with computational models of legal reasoning and the analysis of legal data, the field of legal knowledge and information systems has seen increasing interest in the application of data analytics and machine learning tools to legal tasks in recent years. This book presents the proceedings of the 34th annual JURIX conference, which, due to pandemic restrictions, was hosted online in a virtual format from 8 – 10 December 2021 in Vilnius, Lithuania. Since its inception as a mainly Dutch event, the JURIX conference has become truly international and now, as a platform for the exchange of knowledge between theoretical research and applications, attracts academics, legal practitioners, software companies, governmental agencies and judiciary from around the world. A total of 65 submissions were received for this edition, and after rigorous review, 30 of these were selected for publication as long papers or short papers, representing an overall acceptance rate of 46%. Fuzzy systems and data mining are indispensible aspects of the computer systems and algorithms on which the world has come to depend. This book presents papers from FSDM 2021, the 7th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining. The conference, originally due to take place in Seoul, South Korea, was held online on 26-29 October 2021, due to ongoing restrictions connected with the COVID-19 pandemic. The MMBD conference deals with two main subjects; those of Big Data and Modern Management. Both conferences were originally scheduled to be held from 8-11 November 2021, in Quanzhou, China and Xiamen, China respectively. Both conferences were ultimately held fully online on the same dates, hosted by Huaqiao University in Quanzhou and Xiamen respectively. The book is in two parts, and contains a total of 78 papers (54 from MMBD2021 and 24 from MLIS2021) selected after rigorous review from a total of some 300 submissions. Human language technology is the study of the methods by which computer programs or electronic devices can analyze, produce, modify or respond to human texts and speech. It consists of natural language processing and computational linguistics on the one hand, and speech technology on the other. This book presents the proceedings of the 9th International Conference, Human Language Technologies – The Baltic Perspective (Baltic HLT 2020), organised in Kaunas, Lithuania on 22 and 23 September 2020. This biennial conference offers researchers a platform to share knowledge on recent advances in human language processing for the Baltic languages, as well as promoting interdisciplinary and international cooperation in human language-technology research within and beyond the Baltic States. The investigation of computational models of argument is a rich and fascinating interdisciplinary research field with two ultimate aims: the theoretical goal of understanding argumentation as a cognitive phenomenon by modeling it in computer programs, and the practical goal of supporting the development of computer-based systems able to engage in argumentation-related activities with human users or among themselves. The biennial International Conferences on Computational Models of Argument (COMMA) provide a dedicated forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest advancements in the field, and cover both basic research and innovative applications. The subject of social robotics has enormous projected economic significance. However, social robots not only present us with novel opportunities but also with novel risks that go far beyond safety issues. It is a potentially highly disruptive technology which could negatively affect the most valuable parts of the fabric of human social interactions in irreparable ways. Since engineering educations do not yet offer the necessary competences to analyze, holistically assess, and constructively mitigate these risks, new alliances must be established between engineering and SSH disciplines, with special emphasis on the humanities (i.e. disciplines specializing in the analysis of socio-cultural interactions and human experience). The Robophilosophy Conference Series was established in 2014 with the purpose of creating a new forum and catalyzing the research discussion in this important area of applied humanities research, with focus on robophilosophy. Robophilosophy conferences have been the world's largest venues for humanities research in and on social robotics. Information modeling and knowledge bases have become an important area of academic and industry research in the 21st century, addressing complexities of modeling that reach beyond the traditional borders of information systems and academic computer science research. This book presents 32 reviewed, selected and updated papers delivered at the 29th International Conference on Information Modeling and Knowledge Bases (EJC2019), held in Lappeenranta, Finland, from 3 to 7 June 2019. In addition, two papers based on the keynote presentations and one paper edited from the discussion of the panel session are included in the book. The conference provided a forum to exchange scientific results and experience, and attracted academics and practitioners working with information and knowledge. The papers cover a wide range of topics, ranging from knowledge discovery through conceptual and linguistic modeling, knowledge and information modeling and discovery, cross-cultural communication and social computing, environmental modeling and engineering, and multimedia data modeling and systems to complex scientific problem-solving. The conference presentation sessions: Learning and Linguistics; Systems and Processes; Data and Knowledge Representation; Models and Interface; Formalizations and Reasoning; Models and Modeling; Machine Learning; Models and Programming; Environment and Predictions; and Emotion Modeling and Social Networks reflect the main themes of the conference. The book also includes 2 extended publications of keynote addresses: ‘Philosophical Foundations of Conceptual Modeling'and ´Sustainable Solid Waste Management using Life Cycle Modeling for Environmental Impact Assessment', as well as additional material covering the discussion and findings of the panel session. The field of legal knowledge and information systems has traditionally been concerned with the subjects of legal knowledge representation and engineering, computational models of legal reasoning, and the analysis of legal data, but recent years have also seen an increasing interest in the application of machine learning methods to ease and empower the everyday activities of legal experts. This book presents the proceedings of the 33rd International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (JURIX 2020), organised this year as a virtual event on 9–11 December 2020 due to restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. For more than three decades, the annual JURIX international conference, which now also includes demo papers, has provided a platform for academics and practitioners to exchange knowledge about theoretical research and applications in concrete legal use cases. A total of 85 submissions by 255 authors from 28 countries were received for the conference, and after a rigorous review process, 20 were selected for publication as full papers, 14 as short papers, and 5 as demo papers. This selection process resulted in a total acceptance rate of 40% (full and short papers) and a competitive 23.5% acceptance rate for full papers. Topics span from computational models of legal argumentation, case-based reasoning, legal ontologies, smart contracts, privacy management and evidential reasoning to information extraction from different types of text in legal documents, and ethical dilemmas. Providing a state-of-the-art overview of developments in the field, this book will be of interest to all those working with legal knowledge and information systems.

FOIS is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications, a non-profit organization which promotes interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science, as well as in the applications of ontological analysis to conceptual modeling, knowledge engineering, knowledge management, information-systems development, library and information science, scientific research, and semantic technologies in general. This volume presents the 17 papers accepted for the 11th Formal Ontology in Information Systems conference (FOIS 2020). These papers cover a broad range of topics and are organized into 5 groups. Foundations is dedicated to the general ontological decisions providing a foundation for any ontology, both from a philosophical perspective and with an emphasis on applications. Social Entities is dedicated to the ontological analysis and formalization of various social entities, including secrets, legal theories, decisions, kinship, and cultural heritage. The papers in Intentionality and Embodiment analyze aspects of an agent's intentions, beliefs and desires, as well as the embodiment of functional relations. The section on Parts and Wholes is dedicated to mereology as well as the mereological analysis of certain types of entities (e.g., pluralities, information entities, and computer programs). Lastly, the papers in Methods are about ontology evaluation and use. Altogether, the papers reflect traditional FOIS themes with perhaps a greater emphasis on social and agent aspects, and will be of interest to all those whose work involves ontology and its applications.

The interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic encompass applications in the electrical, industrial, chemical and engineering realms as well as in areas of management and environmental issues, while data mining covers new approaches to big data, massive data, and scalable, parallel and distributed algorithms. This book presents papers from the 6th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM 2020). The conference was originally due to be held from 13-16 November 2020 in Xiamen, China, but was changed to an online conference held on the same dates due to ongoing restrictions connected with the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual FSDM conference provides a platform for knowledge exchange between international experts, researchers academics and delegates from industry. This year, the committee received 316 submissions, of which 76 papers were selected for inclusion in the conference; an acceptance rate of 24%. The conference covers four main areas: fuzzy theory; algorithms and systems, which includes topics like stability; foundations and control; and fuzzy applications, which are widely used and cover various types of processing as well as hardware and architecture for big data and time series. Providing a current overview of research and developments in fuzzy logic and data mining, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field of data science.

The management of any modern organisation involves data, but the volume of information has become almost impossible for even the most up-to-date computer system to handle. Fortunately, big-data technologies are now enabling new ways of dealing with the flood of information, making an approximate solution possible in a reasonable time-frame, as an alternative to waiting for an exact result taking much longer. This book contains the 17 papers presented at the inaugural conference of the new series: Modern Management based on Big Data (MMBD 2020). The conference was originally scheduled to be held in Beijing, China, but due to measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was held online from 18-21 October 2020. As its name suggests, the conference covers the connected aspects of Big Data and Modern Management, and the 17 papers included here, accepted from a total of 68 submissions, cover topics including data capture and storage; search, sharing and analytics; data visualization; machine learning algorithms for big data; distributed file systems and databases; management strategy and decision making; manufacturing and logistics systems; total quality management; management information systems; human factor engineering; and human resources. Providing an overview of current developments in modern management based on Big Data, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

The Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM) conference is an annual event encompassing four main themes: fuzzy theory, algorithms and systems, which includes topics like stability, foundations and control; fuzzy application, which covers different kinds of processing as well as hardware and architectures for big data and time series and has wide applicability; the interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic and data mining, encompassing applications in electrical, industrial, chemical and engineering fields as well as management and environmental issues; and data mining, outlining new approaches to big data, massive data, scalable, parallel and distributed algorithms. The annual conference provides a platform for knowledge exchange between international experts, researchers, academics and delegates from industry. This book includes the papers accepted and presented at the 5th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM 2019), held in Kitakyushu, Japan on 18-21 October 2019. This year, FSDM received 442 submissions. All papers were carefully reviewed by program committee members, taking account of the quality, novelty, soundness, breadth and depth of the research topics falling within the scope of FSDM. The committee finally decided to accept 137 papers, which represents an acceptance rate of about 30%. The papers presented here are arranged in two sections: Fuzzy Sets and Data Mining, and Communications and Networks. Providing an overview of the most recent scientific and technological advances in the fields of fuzzy systems and data mining, the book will be of interest to all those working in these fields.

In recent years, the application of machine learning tools to legally relevant tasks has become much more prevalent, and the growing influence of AI in the legal sphere has prompted the profession to take more of an interest in the explainability, trustworthiness, and responsibility of intelligent systems. This book presents the proceedings of the 32nd International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (JURIX 2019), held in Madrid, Spain, from 11 to 13 December 2019. Traditionally focused on legal knowledge representation and engineering, computational models of legal reasoning, and analyses of legal data, more recently the conference has also encompassed the use of machine learning tools. A total of 81 submissions were received for the conference, of which 14 were selected as full papers and 17 as short papers. A further 3 submissions were accepted as demo presentations, resulting in a total acceptance rate of 41.98%, with a competitive 25.5% acceptance rate for full papers. The 34 papers presented here cover a broad range of topics, from computational models of legal argumentation, case-based reasoning, legal ontologies, and evidential reasoning, through classification of different types of text in legal documents and comparing similarities, to the relevance of judicial decisions to issues of governmental transparency. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the use of knowledge and information systems in the legal sphere.
